a Word from Sema Hello everyone! When I was a child, I enjoyed reading mystery novels. My nose was often stuck between the pages of a Nancy Drew or a Secret Seven book. It was wonderful to learn of all the different places and adventures the people in my books went through. What kinds of books do you enjoy reading? 'Reading is very important' We hear this often from our parents and teachers. Reading is fun too! And in this issue we celebrate stories by some great writers. At SEMA, we encourage everyone to listen to children's voices; and one of the best ways to listen is by reading what others write. Read on to see what books other children like, how to start book clubs and even how to make your own book! We would love to hear your voices. Send in your stories, poems, pictures to SEMA and you could see them in the coming issues. A big THANK YOU to our readers, schools, parents and all the organizations supporting us. We could not have done it without you! Read, Learn and ENJOY!

Nilipokuwa mdogo, nilifurahia kusoma vitabu vilivyohusu udadisi. Ilikuwa si ajabu kunikuta nasoma vitabu vya Nancy Drew tena kwa umakini sana. Nilipenda sana kujifunza kuhusu sehemu na matukio mbalimbali waliopitia wahusika katika vitabu vyangu. Wewe unafurahia kusoma vitabu vya aina gani? 'Kusoma ni muhimu sana.' Mara nyingi tunasikia maneno haya kutoka kwa wazazi na walimu wetu. Kusoma kunaburudisha pia! Na katika toleo hili, tunarejea na kufurahia hadithi nzuri za waandishi mbalimbali. SEMA tunahimiza watu kusikiliza sauti za watoto; na moja ya njia bora za kusikiliza ni kwa kusoma kile wengine wanachokiandika. Endelea kusoma ujionee aina za vitabu watoto wengine wanavyopenda kusoma, namna ya kuanzisha klabu za vitabu na hata jinsi ya kutengeneza kitabu chako mwenyewe! Tungependa kusikia sauti zenu. Tutumie hadithi, mashairi au picha na unaweza kuziona katika matoleo yajayo. Shukrani ziende kwa wasomaji wetu, shule zote, wazazi na mashirika yote yanayotuunga mkono katika shughuli zetu. Bila nyie, tusingeweza kufanikiwa. Soma, Jifunze na Ufurahie!

A long time ago, God created the earth, the rocks and the soils. God fed the earth with minerals and created the waters and plants. He created animals, big and small. Some organisms remained underneath the soil, caring for it and giving it air and life. Singing birds occupied the skies. The beautiful environment, sweet smells, and bright colours made the earth a very special place to live.

Hapo zamani, Mungu aliiumba dunia, miamba na udongo. Akaijaza ardhi madini na akaumba mimea pamoja na vyanzo vyote vya maji. Mungu akaumba wanyama, wakubwa kwa wadogo. Baadhi ya viumbe wakabaki chini ya ardhi wakiutunza udongo kwa kuupa virutubisho na uhai huku ndege wakiimba na kuijaza anga na sauti zao nzuri. Mzingira mazuri, rangi nyingi za kupendeza na harufu nzuri za maua vikaipa dunia uhai.


Finally, God made man and gave him the ability and skills to change and modify the environment and so every other creature was placed under man's care. Hatimaye, Mungu akamuumba mwanaadamu; akampa uwezo na ujuzi wa kubadili mazingira. Kila kiumbe kikawekwa chini ya uangalizi wa mwanaadamu.

The animals, the birds and plants all wanted the ability to speak but God told them that it is man's duty to speak on their behalf. This is because God trusted man to take care of all these living things for himself, and the future generations after him. Mimea, wanyama, na ndege wote walitamani sana kuwa na uwezo wa kuongea lakini Mungu akawaambia kuwa ni wajibu wa mwanaadamu kuzungumza kwa niaba yao na kuwalinda. Mungu alimuamini sana mwanaadamu kuwatunza viumbe hai wote kwa ajili yake, na kwa ajili ya vizazi vijavyo.


Animals need land, water and plants to live. Plants need fertile soils and fresh air to grow and fish need clean water. Humans were created along with other creatures on the same motherland and given the responsibility to care for everything on earth. But man kills animals, burns bushes, destroys the soils and pollutes water making life for fish, birds and other animals and plants almost impossible today. Wanyama wanahitaji ardhi bora, maji na mimea ili waishi. Mimea inahitaji udongo wenye rutuba na hewa safi na samaki huhitaji maji safi. Wanaadamu waliumbwa pamoja na viumbe wengine wakapewa wajibu wa kutunza kila kitu hapa duniani. Lakini leo hii mwanaadamu anaua wanyama hovyo, anachoma misitu, anaharibu udongo na kuchafua maji. Yote haya huwaumiza wanyama, samaki, ndege na mimea.

If animals and plants could talk, do you think that they would have good things to say about man?

Be Inspired Faraja Nyalandu Author of Unaweza

All of us want to do well in school and succeed in life. At times we forget that learning does not end in the class...all around us, there are things to learn from that can help us in life and in school. We spoke to Faraja Nyalandu about her book, Unaweza, which has 10 tips for students to succeed in studies. Here is what she had to say...


01 Why did you decide to write the book UNAWEZA and why that title? Unaweza came from a frequently asked question from students on what they should do to pass their exams. That question made me realise that most students have set their target only on passing their exams and not really on learning. That is the first reason they fail. Cramming can only get you so far but once the questions are twisted or you are required to apply the knowledge as a problem solver, you end up failing. The book is about strategies to enable students to manage their academic lives, improve their learning outcomes and pass their exams. If a student understands why they have to learn and how they can learn, they will be able to apply that knowledge to successfully overcome challenges in life including exams.

Kwa nini uliamua kuandika kitabu hiki na kukiita “UNAWEZA�? Unaweza kimetokana na wanafunzi kuuliza mara kwa mara wafanye nini ili wafaulu mitihani yao. Swali hili lilinisaidia kutambua kwamba wanafunzi wengi wameweka malengo katika kufaulu mitihani tu kuliko kujifunza. Hiyo ni sababu kubwa ya wanafunzi kufeli. Kukariri maswali ili ujibie mitihani hakuwezi kukusaidia pale maswali yanapobadilishwa na kukutaka utumie maarifa ili kupata jibu, matokeo yake unashindwa kujibu maswali kwa ufasaha na kufeli mitihani. Kitabu kinahusu mbinu za kuwasaidia wanafunzi kukabiliana na maisha yao ya kitaaluma, kuboresha matokeo ya usomaji wao na hatimaye kufaulu mitihani. Kupitia maarifa yaliyo katika kitabu hiki, watafanikiwa kutatua changamoto katika maisha; ikiwemo mitihani.

Wote tunapenda kufanya vizuri shuleni na kufanikiwa maishani kwa ujumla. Wakati mwingine tunasahau kuwa kujifunza hakuishii darasani bali katika mazingira yanayotuzunguka, kuna mambo mengi ambayo yanaweza kutupatia maarifa yatakayotusaidia katika maisha ya kila siku na hata shuleni. Tulizungumza na Faraja Nyalandu kuhusu kitabu chake kiitwacho 'Unaweza', ambacho kina mbinu 10 za kuwasaidia wanafunzi kufanikiwa katika masomo; alikuwa na haya ya kusema‌


02 Does the book target a specific age group? When I was writing the book, I had secondary school students in mind but the book has proved useful to a variety of students from primary school children to university students.

Je, kitabu hiki kinalenga kundi maalum? Mwanzoni nililenga zaidi kuzungumza na wanafunzi wa shule za sekondari. Lakini kitabu kimedhihirisha kuwa na umuhimu kwa wanafunzi wa ngazi zote kuanzia watoto wa shule za msingi hadi wanafunzi wa vyuo vikuu.

Why did you choose to write the book in Kiswahili?

The book is a capacity building book so I did not want language to be a barrier to the knowledge I expect readers to get from the book.

Kwa nini ulichagua kuandika kitabu kwa lugha ya Kiswahili? Kitabu hiki kinalenga kuwajengea wanafunzi uwezo, hivyo sikutaka lugha iwe kikwazo kwa wasomaji kupata maarifa ninayotarajia wayapate kutokana na kitabu hiki.

What advice do you have for teachers and parents to help children excel in school? Teaching is a very noble profession that requires utmost passion and determination to meet good learning outcomes. However, teaching starts at home and parents have a key role in the learning journey of their children. Parents and teachers need to collaborate and communicate to ensure that children succeed.

Una ushauri gani kwa walimu na wazazi ili kuwasaidia watoto wafanye vizuri shuleni? Ualimu ni taaluma yenye heshima sana ambayo inahitaji mtu ajitolee kwa dhati na awe na uthubutu wa kufikia malengo mazuri ya matokeo ya kujifunza. Hata hivyo, kufundisha huanzia nyumbani na wazazi wana wajibu mkubwa katika kuhakikisha watoto wao wanajifunza vyema. Ni muhimu wazazi na walimu washirikiane ili kuhakikisha watoto wanafanikiwa.

What is the most important thing you would advice students to do? Students need to believe in themselves and appreciate the fact that they have the potential to succeed. Everyone has this potential but most students do not believe in their abilities. Self-belief is important for personal success. To sum it up, as the title of the book goes, Unaweza!

Wanafunzi wanatakiwa wajiamini na wafahamu kuwa wanao uwezo mkubwa wa kufanikiwa. Kila mtu ana uwezo lakini wanafunzi wengi hawajaamini uwezo wao. Ili mtu aweze kufanikiwa, ni muhimu ajiamini. Hivyo, kama jina la kitabu linavyosema, Unaweza!


Some children are not able to play happily because they do not have proper food or healthy homes. They cannot even go to school! Luckily, some wonderful people have seen that these children are sad and they have come together to help them get all their rights. By working together with children, they have decided to focus on 10 things that are important to children. These ten things are: Baadhi ya watoto wanashindwa kucheza kwa furaha kwa kuwa hawana chakula kizuri chenye rutuba wala afya nzuri na mazingira mazuri ya kuishi. Wanashindwa hata kwenda shule kujifunza! Kwa bahati nzuri, watu wachache wamekuja pamoja baada ya kuona kwamba watoto hawa wana huzuni. Watu hawa wameungana mkono ili kuhakikisha kuwa watoto wote wanapata haki zao zote. Kwa kushirikiana na watoto wameamua kuzingatia mambo 10 ambayo ni muhimu kwa watoto. Mambo haya ni:

• Save the lives of children and women • Good nutrition • Better hygiene and sanitation in schools and health facilities • Early childhood development • Quality education for all children • Safe schools • Protect infants and adolescent girls from HIV • Reduce teenage pregnancy • Protect children from violence, abuse, and exploitation • Children with disabilities

• Kuokoa maisha ya watoto na wana wake • Lishe bora • Usafi, udhibiti wa miundombinu ya maji taka na upatikanaji wa maji safi shuleni na kwenye vituo vya afya. • Kuwaendeleza watoto wakiwa bado wadogo • Elimu bora kwa watoto wote • Shule salama • Kuwalinda watoto wachanga na wasichana dhidi ya VVU • Kupunguza mimba za utotoni • Kuwanusuru watoto dhidi ya ukatili, udhalilishaji na unyonyaji • Kuwekeza kwa watoto wenye ulemavu

These wonderful heroes call themselves the Children's Agenda and by working together with children just like you, they are making a better world for children of today and those of tomorrow. Mashujaa hawa wanajiita Ajenda ya Watoto na kwa kushirikiana na watoto kama wewe, wanaifanya dunia kuwa sehemu bora kwa ajili ya watoto wa leo na hata watoto wa kesho.

Remember that according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;

Kumbuka kuwa kwa mujibu wa Mkataba wa Haki za Mtoto wa Umoja wa Mataifa;

Article 28: You have the right to a good quality education. You should be encouraged to go to school to the highest level you can.

Ibara 28: Una haki ya kupata elimu bora. Unapaswa kuhamasishwa kwenda shule hadi ngazi ya juu uwezavyo.

In order to get the best education, you need a good school. So, what is a good school? Take a look at what some children think.

Ili uweze kupata elimu bora, unahitaji shule bora. Je, shule bora inatakiwa iwe na sifa gani? Baadhi ya watoto wana mawazo yafuatayo.

A good school has:

1. Enough teachers and teaching materials in each department. 2. Teachers who can teach well and who understand children. 3. Teachers who listen to the problems of students and help solve them and who attend their lessons. 4. Students who complete their tasks on time and do all their responsibilities from teachers and parents because obedience begins at home. 5. Clean school environments that are taken care of by both students and teachers as well as good personal hygiene. 6. Security and safety; schools should have walls to prevent thieves and bad people from harming the school. 7. Cooperation from parents and surrounding communities. 8. Playgrounds for students 9. Gives students the opportunity to interact and discuss instead of only spoon feeding children with knowledge from teachers.

Wanafunzi wanaomaliza kazi walizopewa kwa wakati na wanaotimiza majukumu yote wanayopewa na waalimu na wazazi maana utii huanzia nyumbani. 5. Mazingira safi ya darasani na ya nje yanayotunzwa na wanafunzi na waalimu pamoja na usafi wa mwili. 6. Usalama na utulivu; shule iwe na ukuta kuzuia wezi na watu wabaya kudhuru shule. 7. Ushirikiano kutoka kwa wazazi na jamii inayoizunguka. 8. Viwanja vya michezo kwa wanafunzi 9. Inayowapa wanafunzi nafasi ya kuchangamana na kujadiliana na sio 'kulishwa' tu kile kinachotoka kwa waalimu.


HOW TO RAISE A READER... NAMNA YA KUKUZA MTOTO MSOMAJI

SEMA WAZAZI Kama wazazi, tunapenda kuona watoto wetu wakijifunza mambo mapya. Si ajabu kumuona mama akimuuliza mtoto maswali huku akijua mtoto atatoa jibu la kufurahisha au baba akihadithia kwa fahari jinsi mtoto wake alivyo mdadisi. Watoto wana akili sana; hugundua mambo mapya kila siku, huuliza maswali na kujaribu kusaidia shughuli za nyumbani. Tunawezaje kuwasaidia watoto wetu ili uelewa na uwezo wao wa kudadisi uweze kuongezeka? Kusoma ni mojawapo ya njia bora katika kufanikisha suala hili. Tulifanya utaďŹ ti mdogo kwa kuzungumza na baadhi ya wazazi ili kujua mbinu wanazotumia kuwahamasisha watoto wao wafurahie na kupenda kusoma; zifuatazo ni baadhi ya mbinu walizotupatia:-

As parents, we love to see our children learn new things. Often we see a proud mother trying to coax that smart answer she heard from her child or a proud father retell a story about his inquisitive child. It seems every child is a genius; always discovering new things, asking questions and trying to help out at home. So how do we preserve this genius and help our children’s minds grow? Reading is one of the best ways. We did a bit of research and talked to a few parents about how they make reading fun for their children and here are some of the tips they shared.

Make reading with your child a daily habit.

This gives reading importance and it is time that your child can look forward to...even if it is just for half an hour.

Endapo mtasoma pamoja, mtoto wako ataona kuwa kusoma kuna umuhimu na ataungojea muda huu kwa hamu hata kama umepanga kusoma kwa nusu saa tu.

Choose books together.

This decision will feel important to your child and can help keep his/her interest.

Mnapotaka kusoma, shirikiana na mtoto wako kuchagua vitabu.

Maamuzi kama haya ni muhimu kwa mtoto wako na yatamuongezea shauku ya kusoma na kujifunza.

Read aloud for your child to follow.

You can even take turns reading. This will help your child learn new words quicker.

Msomee mtoto kwa sauti huku ukimwonesha unapopasoma. Unaweza pia ukapokezana kusoma na mwanao. Hii itamsaidia kujifunza maneno mapya kirahisi na kuyakumbuka.

Yape uhai maneno unayosoma.

Unaweza kumuahidi mtoto kuwa mtaendelea siku inayofuata, hasa kama hadithi ni ndefu. Mtoto atakuwa na shauku ya kujua kitakachofuata. Pia unaweza kumpa mtoto nafasi ya kukwambia ni jinsi gani yeye angehitimisha hadithi mnayosoma.

Wape wahusika sauti mbalimbali za kuendana nao. Simba anaweza kuwa na sauti kubwa ya kunguruma na panya akawa na sauti ndogo. Jaribu kubadili sauti kutokana na hisia za wahusika kama hasira, furaha ama huzuni. Mpe mwanao nafasi ya kuiga sauti za wahusika pia. Hii itamsaidia mtoto kutunza kumbukumbu ya mlichokisoma.

Jadiliana na mwanao kuhusu hadithi baada ya kusoma. Muulize mtoto: Amependa nini? Hajafurahishwa na nini? Amejifunza kitu gani? Jaribu kumuonesha uwiano uliopo kati ya hadithi na maisha ya kila siku. Ni vyema mtoto wako ajibu maswali haya kabla ya kumpa maoni yako lakini hakikisha unachangia mawazo yako pia.

Show the pictures as you read.

This will help your child understand new and difficult words. You can even try looking at the pictures and guessing what the story will be about before reading. This will bring a fun variation to reading and can spark your child’s imagination.

Hii itamsaidia kuelewa maneno mapya na magumu. Mnaweza kuangalia picha kabla ya kusoma hadithi na kukisia inahusu nini. Hii huleta tofauti katika simulizi na huweza kuchochea ubunifu wa mtoto.

Talk about the story.

What did you like? What didn’t you like? What did you learn? Make connections between the story and real life. It is best to let your child answer these questions before you give them your ideas but always share your thoughts too so that it is not a one sided activity.

You can leave them in suspense and promise to continue the next day, especially if the story is long. They may even be eager enough to continue alone. Or how about playing a game of ‘your own ending’? Let your child tell you how they would finish the story.

Bring the words to life.

Give different characters voices to match. A lion can have a mighty roar while a mouse could be squeaky. Change your tone to clearly reflect emotions like anger, excitement and sadness. Give the little one a go at the voices too.

Spice up your endings.

Movies and audio books

are a great way to bring variation to storytelling. Remember that not all children are natural readers and watching or listening to their favourite character could encourage reading.

Clubs & Reviews Little Prince Mwana Mdogo wa Mfalme The Little Prince is a book by the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery. It was originally published in 1943 in the United States and has been translated into over 180 languages. The Kiswahili translation was published in 2010. Some of the form one students at Makumbusho Secondary School had the following to say about the book. Mwana Mdogo wa Mfalme ni kitabu kilichoandikwa na Mfaransa aitwaye Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Kilichapishwa kwa mara ya kwanza mwaka 1943 nchini Marekani na kimetafsiriwa kwenda lugha zaidi ya 180. Tafsiri ya Kiswahili ilichapishwa mwaka 2010. Baadhi ya wanafunzi wa kidato cha kwanza katika shule ya sekondari Makumbusho walituelezea yafuatayo kuhusu kitabu hiki.

What is the Little Prince about? It's about a pilot who loved to draw but grownups told him to study Geography, History, Mathematics and Grammar instead. That's how he became a pilot. One day while he was traveling alone, the engine of his plane broke down and he had to land in the Sahara desert. He had enough drinking water for eight days only. As he was fixing his plane the Little Prince, came up to him and said "Draw me a sheep." The pilot could not draw because grownups had told him to stop. The Little Prince told the pilot about the planets he had been to. On the first planet he met a king who was a dictator, on the second he met an arrogant man, on the third planet he met a drunkard. Earth was the seventh planet that the Little Price visited. The Little Prince marvels at the wonders of the Earth. He had thought that his rose was the only one in the world but on earth there were so many roses. He also meets a fox who is his friend and a snake that is as thin as a finger. Earth is the second largest planet and has so many things like minerals, rivers, lakes, humans, mountains volcanoes and wells.

Elezea kitabu cha Mwana Mdogo wa Mfalme kwa ufupi. Rubani alikua anapenda sana kuchora lakini watu wazima walimvunja moyo kuwa aache kazi ya kuchora ajiingize katika masomo ya Jiografia, Historia, Hesabu na Sarufi. Hapo ndipo alipoanza kazi ya urubani . Siku moja akiwa safarini peke yake, bila abiria wala fundi makenika, injini ya ndege yake iliharibika hivyo akatua katika jangwa la Sahara. Alikuwa na maji ya kunywa ya kutosha takriban siku nane. Akiwa anafanya matengenezo magumu alikuja mwana mdogo wa mfalme na kumwambia, "nichoree kondoo." Hakuwa anaweza kuchora kwa sababu watu wazima walimvunja moyo. Mwana mdogo wa mfalme alimweleza rubani kuwa alishawahi kutembelea sayari nyingine. Katika sayari ya kwanza, alikua anaishi Mfalme dikteta, sayari ya pili majivuno, ya tatu mlevi. Alitembea mpaka sayari ya saba ambayo ni Dunia. Alishangaa sana kuiona sayari hii kwani ilikua na maajabu mengi zaidi. Yeye alifikiria kuwa ua lake lipo moja tu, kufika Duniani aliyaona mengi na pia alikutana na mbweha ambaye alikuwa ni rafiki yake wa mwisho. Alikutana na nyoka mwembamba kama kidole. Sayari hii ni ya pili kwa ukubwa na ina vitu vingi sana Madini, mito, Maziwa, Migodi, Binadamu Mlima Volkano , na visima.

James was a nine year old boy who lived with his Aunt, Jane. Aunt Jane was very harsh and she would beat James often and hurt him. James was very sad. James alikuwa mtoto mwenye huzuni muda mwingi.

A neighbour saw how James was beaten and that he was very sad so one day, he decided to call 116 for help. Jirani aliona James ana huzuni sana kwa sababu ya kupigwa mara nyingi na hivyo aliamua kupiga namba 116 kwa ajili ya kupata ushauri.

A friendly counselor directed him to go to a social welfare officer to report the case. Baada ya kupiga 116, mshauri rafiki wa watoto alimuelekeza aende kwa afisa ustawi wa jamii ili kutoa taarifa kuhusu James na shangazi yake.

The social worker visited James' home and spoke to Aunt Jane. She gave the aunt good advice on different ways of teaching James discipline instead of beating him. Kitabu cha kwanza kuchapishwa ni Biblia ya Gutenberg ambacho kilichapishwa kwa lugha ya Kilatini. Kitabu hiki kilichapishwa na Johannes Gutenberg, nchini Ujerumani. Ingawa baadhi ya sehemu zilichapishwa kabla ya mwaka 1456, inaaminika kuwa kitabu kamili kilichapishwa mwaka huo.

The first book ever printed using a printing press is the Gutenberg Bible which was written in Latin. The book was published by Johannes Gutenberg, in present day Germany. Although some parts of the book were printed before 1456, it is believed that the complete book was released in that year.

IN OLALAMPALATA TOWN Once upon a time there lived a Mr and Mrs Penguin. They had two beautiful children, Ben and Aria. Aria and Ben did not like school or books or learning. In fact, at school they only enjoyed eating and play time with their friends. The school term was nearly over and it was already report day. Ben and Aria were the last students in class. They cried and cried. Their parents got so furious with them and their friends made fun of them because they could not read. Ben and Aria felt so bad that they went away from school.. They went far, far, far away to a town that no one liked to visit. The town was called Olalampalata. In Olalampalata, they met a very small man who looked at them and said, “You two don‛t belong here. What are you doing here?”

“We ran away from our town. Everyone is laughing at us because we can‛t read and we don‛t love reading,” said Ben. The man chuckled and decided to take them on a little tour around the town. He showed them the clumsy people of Olalampalata. “Here in Olalampalata, we have very clumsy people who live in dirty places. They can‛t eat good food, they can‛t go to places that they love, and they can‛t have nice houses,” said the small man. “But that is very bad!” exclaimed Aria. “Yes it is, but they didn‛t want to work hard at school. They didn‛t want to read and neither did they want to study hard. They just loved playing around, so they are not able to do anything,” the man replied. Ben and Aria loved having fun, going to good places and so many good things. But they hated reading. They had to learn to love reading if they wanted these good things. The small man gave them a solution, whenever they did not feel like

reading they should look at their left hand and remember the clumsy people of Olalampalata and then look at their right hand and think of all the good things that they wanted to do. Ben and Aria thanked the man and they ran as fast as they could, back to their town. They promised their parents to work hard at school. Since then, Aria and Ben have been reading and every month they go back to Olalampalata and teach the people on how to read.

Zaidi ya miaka 40 iliyopita, Dk. Seuss alitueleza kuhusu athari za ukataji miti, uchafuzi, na matumizi mabaya ya mazingira. Alieleza athari hizi kupitia kitabu chake kiitwacho 'The Lorax' na leo tungependa kurejea hadithi hiyo.

Hadithi hii huanza kwa kumuelezea mvulana aishie katika ardhi ya kale isiyo na rutuba, mwenye shauku ya kujua kwanini dunia sio rafiki. Mvulana huyu anaamua kumtembelea Once-ler, kiumbe anayefahamu kisa kilichopelekea nchi hii kukosa rutuba. Once-ler anamueleza kuwa hapo mwanzo, ardhi ilikuwa imejaa miti aina ya Truffula yenye rangi za kupendeza, ndege, wanyama na samaki wanoimba! Once-ler anavutiwa sana na uzuri wa miti hii, hivyo anaitumia kutengeneza bidhaa iitwayo 'Thneed'. Ni kitu cha ajabu lakini cha muhimu ambacho 'watu wote wanakihitaji' maana kina matumizi mengi sana. Kinaweza kuwa shati au soksi, glavu au hata kofia! Anapokata mti wa kwanza, kiumbe cha ajabu chenye rangi mithili ya chungwa kiitwacho Lorax kinatokea na kinazungumza kwa niaba ya miti. Lorax anamwambia Once-ler asiikate miti lakini Once-ler anapuuzia na kiwanda cha Thneeds kinakua. Anaendelea kukata na kukata, hadi miti yote inaisha. Kiwanda kinafuka moshi na kumwaga maji machafu kiasi cha samaki na wanyama kushindwa kuogelea na kuimba. Inabidi wanyama wote wahame kwakuwa mazingira si rafiki tena. Bila miti ya Truffula, Threed haziwezi kutengenezwa, kwahiyo kiwanda kinafungwa na Once-ler anabaki peke yake. Kwa masikitiko, Lorax nae anaondoka. Ardhi inajaa ukame na Once-ler anabaki na huzuni. Sasa mvulana anaelewa sababu ya nchi hiyo kutokuwa na rutuba. Lakini kuna matumaini kwa sababu Once-ler amebakia na mbegu moja ya mti wa Truffula. Mbegu hiyo anamkabidhi mvulana na kumwambia aipande ili iote na kutengeneza msitu, pengine Lorax atarudi tena pamoja na marafiki zake wengine.

Kamwe hatukuona sura ya Once-ler katika hadithi hii. Hivyo, Once-ler angeweza kuwa mimi au wewe! Tusipotunza mazingira yetu, dunia itakuwa kame na kukosa rutuba kama nchi iliyopo kwenye hadithi hii; hakutakuwa na hewa safi, chakula cha kutosha kwa ajili ya wanyama na binadamu wala maji safi. Lakini tunaweza kuamua kuwa kama mvulana huyu. Tupande mbegu njema; kwa kutunza vyanzo vya maji, ardhi na mimea. Kama Dk. Seuss alivyosema, "Wewe usipojali, hakuna kitakachobadilika."

More than 40 years ago, Dr. Seuss spoke to us about the dangers that deforestation, pollution and bad environmental management pose to nature. He spoke of these dangers through the Lorax and today, we would like to revisit that story.

It starts with a boy in a grey and barren land, who wants to know why the world is so bleak. So he visits the Once-ler , a creature that knows how the grey, barren land came to be so. We learn of a once colourful land; filled with bright Truffula Trees, Swomee-Swans, Brown Bar-ba- loots and fish that hum! The Once-ler is mesmerized by the beautiful Truffula Trees. He uses them to make a Thneed, a strange but useful thing that "all people need" and can be used for just about anything! It can be a shirt or a sock, a glove or a hat!

He chops and chops until there is nothing left to chop. He spills and spills until the humming fish can't swim. There is so much smoke that the swans can no longer sing. Alas!, all the animals have to be sent away. Without the Truffula trees, not a Thneed can he make. His factory shuts down and he's left all alone. The Lorax also leaves, with a sad glance, leaving only a stone with the strange word: "Unless". All turns grey and barren, and the Once-ler is sad. Now the boy knows why the world is so barren. But the Once-ler has saved a single Truffula Tree seed which means there is hope for the trees to grow. He gives the boy the Truffula seed and tells him to plant it so that it grows into a forest and the Lorax may come back with all of his friends .

We never see the Once-ler in the story. Could he be me or he could be you? If we do not take care of the environment, the world will be grey. There will be no clean air to use, not enough food for animals or for humans and there will be no clean water. But we can choose to be the boy. We can choose to plant a seed; by taking care of water of land and of trees. Because like Dr. Seuss said, "Unless someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not." Through its fun rhymes and colourful pictures, the story teaches us to love and respect mother nature and the consequences if we don't. It is a fun book to read, in class and at home.
