Agenda : Essay Development We need an editor, no one put themselves forward. We need to have a universal style when it comes to the essay so it flows and not like it was written by 7 different people. basic structure of the essay must be introduction, content then conclusion. We all need the same view, by reading the same books. We cant have on part of the essay saying one thing and another disagreeing with that statement, needs to be consistent. Structure Why did it start? When did it start? When did it finish? Why did it finish? Where did it happen? Who were the key players? Design is an action to what happened before. Look at any Manifestos.

Agenda : Essay Development Tutorial with Roger How to structure book and use the grid. Book set size, 210x210mm readability, for the book, should be a pleasure if not easy to read. read the grids book. the grids are the glue that will hold our book together optimal line length considered to be 50-60 characters per line. 75 max switch hyphenation off, with short lines makes it more difficult correlation between line length, leading and 210 square size of book. non negotiable hierarchy in contents, bold and light text. check characters, size leading etc. in indesign. using 3 column grid, leaves an extra column for citations, captions, footnotes sometimes use colour for type, if it fits in. certain cases it is appropriate that it is black, but with web2.0 coloured and expressive type can be more fitting. everyone to set type, have a go at content, and a few spreads. to gauge what is happening with type, print at 100% and trim to size, to really get a feel for the piece. By tuesday need to see, contents, chapter heading , opening page of pictures and text, that may have captions: headings, subheading, quotes, paginations, chapter headings, running text, captions footers, citations.

Agenda : Essay Development Scheduled meeting with Roger to present our initial design ideas for the book. Presented our initial designs of the book to roger, got feedback on each of our designs and what to do to improve them. We meet again with Roger and Gabbi on Thursday to present our new designs. New conditions of printing are for them to be printed at 210x210mm and to have our grids and guides overlaid to show how we use the grids. Met with Gabbi and she talked through the essay and the notes she made on it, and make sure we understand and will follow the new layout for the essay she gave to us.
Aims for Next meeting 9/3/14 : Self initiated meeting to talk about our designs and the improvements we will do. For us all to have finished our new words for the essay and submit them for editing. Also to print off the first draft of the essay and hand into Gabbi by 12pm for her to look at it during the afternoon and make further notes on it.

Becky who messaged in ill, sent her words over Facebook. even though it was before 12 it was too late to add into first draft of essay as we had already printed it. Disscussed our book designs and what we like about each others and what we don’t. To try and come up with a good universal style. Aims for Next meeting 9/4/14 : Next meeting is thursday (10/4/14) morning with roger to show our improved book designs. For us to all have improved book designs, showing the grids and the guides we have used.

Agenda : Essay Development Tutorial with Roger to present our improved designs We presented our new and edited designs of the book each. There are a few changes to make to our designs, but the thing that roger made clear is that we only have a week left to completer this book, in order for us to be able to get it printed and bound properly. After the tutorial with roger we met in the computer room and pretty much finished the essay off. Aims for Next meeting 9/4/14 : Have bibliography done and to have all of our images referenced. Improve our book designs further, so on monday we can meet and go through all designs and pick the best of each and come up with a universal design and assign each person a role to take on with the book.

We decided on a template and grid for the final book design, and we are all to go away and by tomorrow complete our sections on the book, which we will then give to the two people who are designing the book, so that they can compile them into one big indesign file. Agenda : Essay Development Scheduled Tutorial with Gabbi and Mike. Email was sent out 9 in the morning and had meeting at 9:30 Spoke to Gabbi about our project as a whole. We decided on the individual team that are working on the different sections of this project. James and Sarah are working on the Book Design. Kieran and Ethan are working on the Poster. Charles and Nischal are working on the clock, and Becky is working on Promotional Items. We looked at paper samples and talked about getting the book printed, and what that entails, such as binding, getting the paper ordered, and general time management of the book in order for us to get it designed and printed in time. Gabbi spoke to Charles about building the clock and took him to architecture to meet and talk to Channa Vithana who is senior lecturer on BA Architecture. Mike and Gabbi spoke about the poster design and key aspects of a poster, how it has to grab the attention of people and give them enough information to interest them, and maybe find out more online, Gabbi said that a poster has to grab your attention from 20ft away, with the image and header text. Agenda : Essay Development Scheduled Tutorial with Gabbi. 1 hour James and Sarah show their designs for the book. why does front cover have to be black it could be darker tone of the red. type a bit smaller. gap on collar page is too big, have some nice leading. less is more in pale grey, open up tracking, might not need quote marks. contents bring whole lot up. page numbers make provisions for those. good type setting on introduction body text, not so much on the quotes. helvetica light. leading on quote is biggest problem. captions need to be in bold, heading on captions. Origins header needs to be in the swiss cross. watch out for widows on captions. Keep cation system going, needs to be consistent. complete diagonal interaction on changing attitudes page by have an image on impact of world war page. be constant with little sub headings on each page. look at consistency with typesetting, distances between captions and images. Blood red on the chapter headings is a bit too much, to heavy throughout the book. Book reflects the moment. don’t be afraid with large images to go big and full bleed and even if it bleeds on to the next page. come up with system on louis sullen page. wainwright building page not working, can bleed image off the edge. knock quotes back, try in grey, but has to be consistent all the way through. quotes too long, two lines/7 words. range left range right is tot much. try quotes pale red. Images has to be full bleed. cut the text, don’t squeeze it in. Don’t have quotes on every single page. Find shorter quotes. Miles van der rohe. Portrait of him on same page as his name. Full spread page of Building image. Maybe take photo of exhibition out.

Get rid of copy , design museum too big. opening and closing times. no free admission. put web address on there. date time and address belong with design museum logo. find better image of building or better building. don’t over photoshop use original image.covering up importent bit of the building that represents international style. underlay image of building in swiss cross. use the white space in the swiss cross. The clock. Charles and Nishal. the concrete clock is possible, charles has spoken to architecture and it is looking really good. Needs to find out how to pit clock component into concrete. fence post concrete mounting the clock on the wall, cant nail into it. clear plastic plates to hold it to the wall, lean against the wall. concrete is super heavy and will pull the wall down if its too heavy. Agenda : Essay Development Contents page good, but needs page numbers. take out colon in caption (dont even need cation, have it on next page). PUT UMLAT IN MULLER BROCKMANNS NAME. don’t need to have second header saying introduction. split into paragraphs. on big quote play around with leading. miles van der roe, van and der lower case. keep opening spreads the same, make sure text aligns. make sure quotes are consistent through out book (hanging quotes etc). good consistency of space. Large ww1 image spread good. consistency in captions. missing a space. Lay out all of the spreads, and re do a flat plan. need to see the consistency overall. need to be clearer in labelling on captions (above, above. both images are above, need to be clearer.) need to be able to read the whole book with just the captions(try this??). for the time line full spread, maybe a gatefold, to get a greater length on the time line, need to be precise and and mention everything, what came before and what came after. good spread on the architecture, but need to make sure its consistent with other title pages, leading on body text? check over the grid, make sure body text fits in. gutters too small on the left side of text, need a few more mm on the side to make sure text doesn’t get cut off in binding. need 20mm to bind. Dualtone all the way through may be too much. “Less is more” looks like a mistake on the page, try it coming out of a colour background. so we know its meant to be there. Get rid of green. keep all the images in their true colours. Layout and style is nice on some pages then you cane the style on the next, keep consistency. (Graphic design and type section) Umlaut? Emil ruder page needs more flow and layout needs to be better. Go back and reevaluate the grid, and layout. check gutter.

Agenda : Essay Development Scheduled Tutorial with Gabbi. 30 mins Poster Design. 12th may to 8th june needs to go above, needs more leading. change so museum is open on weekends. Design museum logo need to come down a little bit. Underneath international style the ,modernist design need to be dropped down a little bit. use the oragne elsewhere, use on sub header. stick rest of info in column rather then staggered. Put international style together and have one word in orange and one in black. The Book Use tabs. Look at taking picture across the gutter, eden will show james. missing a space on ww1 photo. break of style within captions. The fact that the chapter pictures are colour and the rest in duatone is a good move. Less is more page needs looking at, still looks like a mistake, doesn’t work, needs to match other quotes and needs to be reversed out white text on red background. Almost final book, looking really good. Navigations aids need to be constant and clear. bring image down a bit. Book and poster need to have consistency. The Clock the mould is begin made and Charles has the concrete, so he and Nischal are ready to begin tests with the concrete to test strength, colour and texture of the concrete. Agenda : Essay Development Self Initiated meeting. To reassign roles since we are finishing the main tasks We have resigned the roles of each person in the group, as the book is now printed bound and has the cover glues on, the clock mould has been made and we have poured the concrete in,just waiting for it to dry. The poster has been designed and printed, and the log book has been designed. The new roles of each person in the group is now: James Marshall - creating a catalogue for everything that we’ve produced for this project Nischal Gurung - taking over from becky on the Ulm stool since she is unwell and in hospital Kieran James - finishing off the log book and getting it printed and bound. also designing the packaging for the swiss chocolate Ethan Huang - taking over the blog and updating it with all the images and information of our project, and making it coherent Sarah Harrison - is going to bind and help print the log book and catalogue. Also the biscuit packaging design and production. Also to design the presentation in powerpoint and to source products from modip and products we’ve made. Charles Rodriguez - Designing and building the slipcase for the book, log book and catalogue. Becky Haskins - pending from when she gets out of hospital. but she is at the moment has got the cushion to do.

Agenda : Essay Development Self Initiated meeting. To check up on how its all going in terms of newly assigned work Kieran went to B&Q and got a new bag of concrete, this time quick dry post concrete, that should have a smoother feel and lighter texture. Nischal will pour the concrete later today into the new mould. James has been working on his flat plan 3D puzzle buildings, working on Le Corbusiers Villa Savoye as a model, he has experimented with the plan and has put together some models, they are looking good and he aims to finish it by Monday 12th. Sarah has bound the final book, and is reprinting the front cover to stick onto the book later today. Ethan has designed his postcards, and is getting them printed for the exhibition, but now really needs to be working on the blog and updating it with all of the work. Charles has been doing research on the slip case and working out ways of making it and what materials its going to be made out of.

Agenda : Essay Development Self initiated meeting Becky bought in the Ulm stool cardboard that she had cut out to the right size and stuck them together to create the three panels, she will later go and get a cardboard tube to fit along the bottom to complete the ilm stool design and then join together properly. James has flatplan building done and designed nicely so fits next to postcards nicely. He is now making progress on the catalogue Kieran is still working on the Log book, and its coming along nicely, just the front cover to design and then we can send it to print on tuesday and bind on wednesday. Ethan had trouble with the blog and people sending him work to put on the blog, but we resolved the problem and he has plenty of content to add to the blog, will check on its status tomorrow (13th may). Nischal is going to make another clock with the concrete, but has flipped the mould and re nailed it so that the light coloured dry texture we got on the back of the clock last time should be on the front of the clock this time. Charles has found a good method of making the slipcase for the book and log book, that doesn’t involve any joining bits together, only folding and over the weekend he 47
went and got two large piece of red card to cut and fold the slipcase. Also as the card is too thick to print on, he will cut out the words ‘International Style’ on the case so that the white from the other side shows through. Sarah is working on the presentation and after a talk from Roger has re ordered it so it mimics the chapters in our book and so its like we are telling the story of ‘International Style’. So far only Kieran has put himself forward to speak during the presentation, but will need at least one other person.
