INTRO // We started our collaboration week by brainstorming and deciding on a theme for the week. We decided to go for the theme of maps. Starting big with a world map and gradually getting smaller until we get to our student rooms showing the personal aspect of Uni and uni life.

BRAINSTORM // We began brainstorming our university experiences and what makes the Arts University Bournemouth a good place to study for us. After getting our ideas together we decided on taking on a few experiments. We found it interesting to look into where students live in Bournemouth and across the globe as we have many international students. We also decided we wanted to explore students favourite places to hang out such as bars and places not everyone may have heard of.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE //
We put up a large A1 map of Bournemouth and Poole around AUB and asked people to dot where they live. We started to see clusters around Winton and Charmister.

WORKING IN THE WORKSHOP // Using the data we collected from the where do you live map, we cut out different layers of MDF that were different heights. The higher the layer represented the more dense the area as these sections had more student houses.

3D BLOCKS //
We then spray painted the piece white and painted the block representing The Arts University Bournemouth black because it stands out.

COPPER PIPES //
Using the data we collected from the where do you live map, we cut various lengths and widths of copper pipes and pushed them into blue styrofoam to recreate a visual representation of where students live.

ROUTE TO UNI //
We also printed out another A1 map and placed tracing paper over the map. We placed this map around the AUB campus for students to draw their routes to university. We hammered nails into MDF and tied different coloured string around them.

WORLD MAP //
We spoke to the international office of Arts University Bournemouth and got statisitics of where students are from around the world and used pins to show this data.

HIDDEN GEMS // We also spoke to Marketing and created a survey where we asked what students farvourite hidden gem of Bournemouth of Poole was. We recieved nearly 200 replies and created a typographic piecec that shows the places students like.

MAKING TRIANGLES // After reflecting on the previous experiments we produced, we decided to explore the hidden gems theme further and wanted to produce a huge scaled map that shows all the places the students liked to hang out. We designed a colour scheme that seperates catagories such as bars and outdoor spaces and restaurants and created nearly 200 small trianglar based pyramids.

BUILDING FINAL PIECE // After creating the pyrmaids we printed two sheets of paper and stuck them together to create a 2 metre x 3 1/2 metre long map which we used as a guidline to place the trianglar based pyramids. Clear clusters started to form around areas like Winton and Charminster.

FINAL PIECE // This is the final collection of the 187 triangular based pyramids we created placed on the on the huge scaled map.

SUMMARY //
For this project we produced a three dimensional visual piece that has 187 pyramids, each representing a hidden gem such as a restaurant. Using the five colours we decided on we created a colour scheme for each category, i.e. a bar would have a red side with the name of the bar on, a green side and a light blue side which all the 3D triangles have as it links them all together and looks more playful. We really enjoyed the aspect of building and creating three-dimensional objects and experimenting rather than having to come up with an idea straightaway. We also liked using colour to represent different pieces of data and seeing how final piece looked together once everything was put into place.
