The Brief
The brief for this project was to collaborate with Architecture and show the student voice of AUB. We were put into groups of two Graphics students to four Architecture students. At first just myself and Tammy worked on a brainstorm about our student life and what we liked about it. There were aspects of all student life that we liked from uni to what there is to do around Bournemouth. We set ourselves a series of challenges for us to take and to get others to take part in, to get us thinking more about uni and what others think as well.

Brainstorms
We then met with our Architecture group and told them what we had done already and started to brainstorm on the ideas we had already come up with. We kept coming back to what others liked and what about Bournemouth they liked and had discovered while being here.

Collaboration Week
So we decided on a theme of maps and split off to explore the maps, from a large scale world map, to the small scale maps of our student rooms and whats personal about them to us.

Where Do You Live?

For this experiment we put up a large A1 map of Bournemouth and Poole and asked people to dot where they live. We wanted to see where students lived and how they clustered together. We knew that there would be large concentrations in Winton and Charminster. But it was interesting to see how far out people come everyday to get to uni. We then made a digital version of these dot and lead them all back to AUB, this allowed to see the clusters of students even more and where their paths may cross on the journey to uni.

3D Blocks
To take this idea further and develop it we measured the clusters of students in each area and cut and large representative map out of wood and built up these concentrations of students in 3D blocks to see even clearer where students were, and painted AUB black to stand out. This was nice but lacked something personal about us students.

Copper Pipes
This was another quick experiment using different thicknesses of copper pipes and sticking them in a map to show the clusters of student. I like the style of this as it reminds me of birds eye views of cityscapes.

Route To Uni

We wanted something a bit more personal so again put out a large map of Bournemouth and Poole and asked people to draw their route to uni. This was nice to see all the intersecting lines and reminded me of the Underground tube map, so we took that map and nailed into a large piece of MDF where every student started and when they turned. We then wrapped different coloured thread around these nails and drew peoples routes to AUB. It was really nice to see all the colour interlocking and building up together as it got closer to uni.

World Map
We also went and spoke to International in AUB and asked for their statistics on international students as we were interested to see where everyone had come from, it was really interesting to see how far out people had come to study at AUB.

I then went and spoke to the Simon and Freddie from the Marketing department in AUB, as this project was in collaboration with them as well I thought they might have been able to help me with sending out a survey asking people what their favourite things about Bournemouth were, where they like to eat, go out and drink, and also what was their hidden gem about Bournemouth, something that had discover while living here, that not everyone might know. send out a survey and even put in a £50 iTunes voucher to encourage people to take our quiz. Almost 200 people replied giving us a vast amount of data about what people liked about Bournemouth and Poole, there were some very different and strange places which is exactly what we wanted. Using this information we put together a representative map using type, and overlaid all the place names where they were, so the big concentrations of type became unreadable but showed there were a lot of things to do around there. I wanted to develop this project more but I only got the survey results on the Thursday and had to present on the Friday, so didn’t have enough time to really explore this area. Aruba

Morag Myerscough I looked at Morag Myerscough for her use of space with her designs. I really like how she captures and takes ownership of it, that is what I wanted to do with this project. Also her use of colour and negative space, her repeated patterns work well in harmony and not just include the same few colours but really explore the spectrum. I wanted to do the same and not just have a few colours, I also wanted to have areas where there was no colour and the negative space has a nice balance among my work. I really triangular repeated pattern of hers and how it looks 3D and coming out at you, I wanted to explore this further.

Eddie Opara I also looked at Eddie Opara for his data visualisation, and how clean and professional his pieces look. I liked his 3D triangular work and how it flows and manipulates the space in which it occupies. His work with colour, like Myerscough, was also what lead me to look at him for inspiration for my work, I liked his scientific theories on colour and cultural significance of colour. This got me thinking about my piece and if the different colours I have could be representative of something bigger as well and being part of the data and informing others.

Further Development
Me and Tammy wanted to develop this project further into something more refined and final, as we had a mass of data in our hands and no way to effectively represent it. Unfortunately the Architecture group didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to contribute any more, so we split off and focused on the idea of hidden gems as that felt the strongest way to move forward. We decided to play with triangles and repeat them to create patterns.

We then played with the idea of create a 3D piece and mocked up some triangular based pyramids and building a giant map out of these showing the clusters of places people like. We both really liked this idea as it gave us a chance to play with colour as we had 3 sides that would be visible.

Testing Colours
We started to play with colours and looked at colour theory to determine what colours would be best for the triangles. We wanted colours that would work together and not look childish, and we needed to colour three side and had decided on 5 different categories to arrange all our data into.

Final Designs
We decided on these colour each representing a different category, we kept one universal colour, light blue, to keep harmony between the shapes, so they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel mismatched.

Making the Triangles

We printed out all 187 of the triangles and cut and scored them by hand as we wanted nice sharp edges on the triangular based pyramids. We then stuck them together so they were all ready to be placed and be a rough representative map.

Building Final Piece
We also printed a massive 2x3 1/2 metre triangular grid map to represent Bournemouth and Poole and printed the place names in each of the triangles so it would be easier to find and place them in the right place.

Final Piece
This is our final piece, I feel the colours work really well together in a nice harmony and the white space between areas works nicely as negative space, and also allows it to be built upon. The patterns work well together and it is a really interesting, aesthetically pleasing piece. From one side of the piece you see all the colours and the place names and you would be able to clearly see what is what by the colours relating to the categories, and on the other side you would just see an array of colour and patterns which is visually pleasing, especially on this scale. On the bottom of each triangle was the place name and some information about that place, so it allows them to discover it. Even though it is not geographically correct map, there are big places that most students will know to be able to see whats near it and explore each area further. To improve on this I feel that placing it into and area in which people can interact with it would help, and have it on a wall of big table.

For our final newspaper layouts we decide two big images would work as the final piece was so strong it spoke for itself. We also arranged out body text into a triangle as it felt fitting, seeing as we had created almost 200 of them. Our front cover uses an image from our collaboration week, of us all working in the workshop together building something, it felt fitting to using this image to represent the collaboration. We paired this with the big bold type with a bold line through it, suggesting that not all collaborations work.

Critical Evaluation For this project I have experienced what it is like to work with someone studying a very different creative subject. I have not worked with Architecture before and I could clearly see a very different way in which they approach a brief and how they work. I feel like we achieved a lot in the collaboration week, with a lot of experimenting on the theme of mapping and trying different things out that we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t before. I feel that the Graphics approach was to think more conceptually towards the theme and the Architecture approach was more structured and saw a functional piece. In the end I feel like we produced a strong series of experiments that we could then develop into a finalised piece, unfortunately the Architecture group no longer wanted to work on the project, so just myself and Tammy worked on realising a final piece. From the feedback we got from the marketing team, which was to develop the hidden gems idea and use the vast amount of data we had from the survey. We looked at Eddie Opara and how he visualises data, which had a mass of from the survey we put out, and also Morag Myerscough specifically the way she uses colour, shape and patterns. We ended up with building almost 200 triangular based pyramids, to place on a three and half metre long representative map of Bournemouth and Poole, showing all these hidden gems that students have discovered and love about where they live and study. They can pick up these triangles and discover more about these places that other people have discovered. During this experience I have learnt to work better as a team, and take on others ideas even though I might not think they worth executing. I have also learnt how to use space better and represent data in a more visually pleasing way. My strengths on this projects were the vast amount of experiments that we did, and really exploring the mapping theme from the large scale world map down to the blueprints and personal maps of our student bedrooms. Also I feel I was a lot more out going on this project which built my confidence to go and talk to new people as well as different departments and staff. Also the final hidden gems piece was really strong and something that could keep developing and building size and be installed within AUB for students to interact with. My weaknesses in this project were the quality of work in the collaboration week, they were quick experiments but could have been final pieces if built them better. Also I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really get to see what my Architecture group had to offer as I felt they were unmotivated and technically not as good as I would have liked them to be. To improve on this project I could look into different materials to make the Hidden Gems piece out of, so it felt studier and maybe could be slotted into a bigger piece in the wall, which could be constantly expanding. For this we would need to gather more date on peoples hidden gems and maybe why they like places, rather than a generic description, give it more personality.
