Writes A time to celebrate! Dear Readers, Ringing in the New Year means different things to each of us. For me, it’s not only the time to celebrate what’s to come for the New Year but also a time to reflect back on the past year and celebrate all that has been accomplished. This year in particular is a bit nostalgic for me both personally and in business. It’s A Kidsworld will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary as a leading resource in the market that I love. Reflecting back, I remember so clearly the desire to create and establish a trade venue that would have an impact on the industry and bring both new and recognized manufacturers together with their first customer... the buyer. Seeing the transition and growth of what we were 10 years past to where we are now, I cannot help but smile and want to celebrate the triumph of bringing to life an idea, a passion and a commitment I made to myself and the children’s industry many years ago. So, to all my readers and partners I thank you for bringing It’s A Kidsworld to where it is today. Remember to celebrate all of your own achievements and let’s make this 2014 year one to remember.

Absurd Pop

Spring Summer 15 takes a more absurd (and pop art) spin to last season’s kitschy trend. Bold and simple prints mix in with comical pop graphics, while a bright color palette comes into play with primary colors being the stars. Materials are kept comfortable as bright, energetic graphics and prints do most of the work. Silhouettes are kept basic as they serve as canvases for this graphic driven theme. Accessories are wild and outrageous coming in pop colors and fun and comical shapes.

This season’s Athletic Femme theme is great for young girls for its comfort factor with a girly twist. Athletic materials like heathered french terry and mesh jersey are given a feminine quality as they sit in with girly details like lace, satin, and sequins. Monet’s Garden

The paintings of Claude Monet inspired this subtle garden theme. Floral prints work harmoniously with blue and green hues to give an impression of a garden rather than bluntly showcasing flowers. Silhouettes are girly and playful ranging from flowing dresses to embellished tops with taffeta shorts. Tonal floral appliques and lace dress up this look, while the natural green and blue colors remind us to stop and smell the flowers.

Camping it up... with Summer Style

| Text by Janet a. Jacobs

Highlighting the hottest seasonal essentials for the summer camp crowd. It’s a toss-up as to who looks more forward to summer camp, parents or their children. Both groups have lots to anticipate with today’s selection of exciting camp related apparel and accessories. Once considered a regional market for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, this specialized and lucrative category has now expanded beyond the tri-state area into many other regions throughout the country. From young girl and boy campers to teen-age camp counselors, these fashion-savvy shoppers want the trendiest, most colorful, most fun new items to pack in their travel bags. And a fresh supply is ready to meet the ever-growing demand. Having been involved in camp-geared collections for fifteen years, Confetti & Friends is among the pioneers of this category. Owner Laura Martin says,” Camp is such a great experience for kids. My daughter, who is now twenty one years old, went to camp and I think that helped her to make an easy adjustment to college. Camp living teaches kids how to take care of themselves.” As for today’s biggest trends, Martin mentions candy as a very popular theme for graphic motifs. The enticing range of fun merchandise covered in bright and delicious candy-themed prints is irresistible to girls and their parents. Confetti & Friends “Bunk Junk” division of made-for-camp apparel and accessories includes highly creative selections of summer fun items such as autograph pillows for friends to sign, matching sock and laundry bags, coordinating shower and shoe bags, and much more. Confetti & Friends also does a strong business with jewelry, hair accessories and a selection of “Color War” items. Martin says, “For me, camp time is the best time of the year! Kids and parents look forward to this time,

so it’s a fun time to shop…and for me it’s definitely fun to design for!” showaflops are stepping up as musthave flip-flops which combine fashion with serious function. Many camps require hygienic foot coverings for showers, pools and gym areas. Showaflops offers protection in three ways: a unique drainage hole to aerate the flip-flops; an antimicrobial agent which helps protect from bacteria and fungus; and slipresistant gripping soles which are great for walking on slippery tile floors and slick surfaces of any kind. Says Evelyn Bernfeld, president of the amusingly named Flop Operations,”The swim teams love Showaflops as well! We are as comfortable as we are fashionable and that’s why people wear Showaflops outdoors to the pool, to the beach or a day of shopping.” For fashionable design direction, Bernfeld says,”Our flops have gotten cooler and more fun with each season. Our colors get brighter, our patterns more fun and this year we even added a ‘faux stud’ strap for the real fashionistas.” Some of the hottest new styles for campers include a camouflage printed flip-flop for boys and teens, a new “ombre smiley” print and a fun “XOX” style which has been very popular. This unique combination of practicality and fun fashion make Showaflops indispensable for many camp activities.

Launched this year, staci-Nary specializes in camp related items, especially stationery – a seemingly retro trend with surprising relevance for today’s e-mail environment. Says founder Staci Koch ”The stationery has been amazing! Stores took in samples and they kept calling back to order more every week.” The style of designs can be described as “Kitschy-cute” and Staci-nary seems to know just what girls like, such as design motifs of cupcakes, make-up, lipstick, trendy store names and icons related to social media. “Camps encourage writing letters…they are helping to bring back the old pen and paper,”says Koch. In today’s age of high-tech communication, it’s a fresh experience for both parents and kids to express themselves on the written page. Stacy-nary also does a brisk business with holiday and birthday cards. Going beyond the printed page, Stacinary has a great selection of gift items that no kid will want to leave home without. Whimsically decorated plastic travel bags are filled with make-up, while others carry all the essentials for nail polish and decoration. The bags are personalized with the girl’s name or the name of their camp, applied with a water-proof sticker. A nice touch: gift bags that will go with the kids on the bus to camp are filled with magazines, candy and small arts and crafts projects. Boy campers are not neglected: Stacinary offers travel bags for boys containing comb, tooth-brush, hair gel and nail clippers. Many of the boy’s items are “Color War”related for the camp’s popular intramural competitions. For girls, Stacinary is especially excited about the new “banana”hair clip, which will be packaged according to the camp’s specific colors.

Staci-Nary

Malibu sugar has seen a steady growth in the camp category during their three years in business. Says company founder Jill Garcia, “Camp is one of our strongest categories.” A look at the company’s ultra-colorful, fun collection makes it easy to understand why girls are happy to pack Malibu Sugar pieces into their camp travel bags. The outstanding characteristics of this line are the unique fabrics used throughout the collection: all-nylon seamless Spandex that is seamless due to being knit on special machines instead of cut and sewn. This technique creates clothes that are extremely soft, comfortable and kinetic, which makes them great for camp-time activities. “We’re known for our bright, fun colors that are so popular for summer,” says Garcia.“Our items are great for layering, which is perfect for camp.” Garcia says the most popular musthave styles for camp are definitely the “boy” shorts and tee shirts which can be ordered in the camp’s specific“Color-War” shades. Although Malibu Sugar styles are not specifically personalized, they’re available with slogans such as “Go Blue “and “Go Red.” Because of the seamless construction and stretchy fabrics used, the line is offered in a tween size that is made to fit all sizes 7-14. For next season, look for newness seen in embellishment, such as sparkling trims which spell out camp sayings and mottos. Malibu Sugar also offers accessories such as beanies and baseball caps. These camp-ready items are available in the same neon-bright colors as the line’s coordinating sportswear. Butterflies and Zebras focuses on fun items for the tween girl camp set. Owner Shari Horowitz explains,“I started to ask buyers what they wanted for this market. They said that they wanted a package deal, something parents can buy and send to their girls.” This information led to the creation of “care packages”— fun assortments of apparel and accessories

packaged in kitschy , clever new ways. One such package comes in a pizza box that is customized with the specific camp’s name.“These are disposable items,” says Horowitz.“The camp business is a quick in-and -out business. Our market is very specific.”Geared to girls sized 7-16, many of the line’s styles are one size to fit all. Top-selling items include cotton/Spandex ”boy”shorts, the bandeau or tube top and a spaghetti strap camisole top. Printed sayings give this apparel a special “camp only” touch.” I Love Camp” and “Live 10 for 2” (referring to the long-awaited two months of the year that’s camp time) are among the most popular slogans. Accessories such as bracelets and headbands are perfect items to add to the packages. Butterflies and Zebras is now collaborating with 100% Gumdrop accessories to make bracelets coordinating to the collection. These exciting new trends in camp wear may well make homesickness a thing of the past. Parents might find that the toughest part of summer’s end is getting the kids to pack up and come home!

Teeny Tiny optics Celebrates 20 Years! designer-style sunglasses at affordable prices raises eye protection awareness among parents

M

arin, California based Teeny Tiny Optics, Inc. (TTO) celebrates twenty years offering comfortable, designer-style children’s sunglasses at affordable prices. Founded by Alice Lando in 1993, the TTO line has grown from a dozen styles in 3 sizes to over 65 styles in 5 sizes ranging from baby to teen. “We’re lucky to enjoy relationships with loyal retailers; many of whom we’ve worked with for more than a decade,“ said Alice Lando, “After 20 years, I still get excited planning and designing each year’s new styles.” TTO will be celebrating its milestone birthday until June with special promotions for retailers. Trends in frames this year include round, aviator, double bridge, and cat eyes. Also important are embellishments, animal prints and colored mirrored lenses. TTO will be showing the 20th Anniversary Collection at the ENK Children’s Club in New York City in January as well at many regional shows throughout the U.S. Although most parents insist their children wear sunscreen, eye protection is just starting to reach public consciousness. “With consistent reinforcement, children get used to having lotion slathered all over them,”continued Lando.“But parents give up trying to keep their child in sunglasses because they are unaware of the dangers.” Too much sun exposure on the eyes can cause a variety of health hazards such as cataracts, photokeratitis[HM3] (sunburn to the eye) as well as cancer of the eye and surrounding skin. 80% of eye damage is done to the eyes before the age of 18. By making kids’ sunglasses high quality, stylish and affordable, TTO hopes to make eye protection a fun habit for both parents and kids alike. “Our glasses look good enough to pose for ‘selfies’. We just want the kids to keep them on for whole the day while at the beach,” said Lando.
