SISTERS... Agree2Disagree

After designing for the Contemporary Women’s world, Marissa Senzon and Lauren took a chance and explored the tween market. With positive feedback from their customers that younger girls wanted the same edgy and modern look, the two ran to begin designing and Agree2Disagree was born. Their design inspiration is pulled directly from Lauren’s girly style and Marissa’s edgy style. Being sisters who have very different styles, they agree and they disagree. One thing they agreed on was the love for their new line, Agree2Disagree. Styles include tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, jumpsuits, sweatshirts and sweatpants. Spring 2015 is very camp driven such as the “1234 we want color war!” and “5678 we don’t want to wait” sweatshirts. “Many buyers gravitated towards these because it reminded them of their days at camp, it was such a great topic of conversation,” states the designers. Agree2Disagree also brought in a loungewear collection with many fun prints and comfortable bodies. “We felt as if the tween market was missing a loungewear section and we wanted to present it in a fun, exciting way that every girl would feel special in,” says Lauren. When asked whom their competitors are Marissa always says “we don’t want to compete with any other brands. We want to be in our own class and be that line that every girl wants and every girl wishes they designed.” For more information please visit www.Agree2Disagreeny.com

isobella & chloe introduces Bold new dancewear

Isobella & Chloe extends its popular line of comfortable girls’ knit outfits with its new dancewear collection this Fall 2015. The cotton collection consists of basic slab tunics and an array of bold and colorful leggings, sold separately. As a huge proponent of strong and active lifestyle, Isobella & Chloe’s President Emily Fong says of the line’s addition, “Our athletic collection allows girls to play and move in supreme style. We are dressing girls to be comfortable, bold, and strong.” Fong continues, “When we designed the line, we aimed to create strong lines that highlight the strength that one would find in a dancer’s pose. We call our new collection Dancewear, but this quality knitwear is really for every girl who embraces life’s movement and fluidity. In a world that is moving faster, both mothers and daughters find themselves rushing between school, social functions, and their many extracurricular activities. There is a demand for stylish clothes that allows for a wide range of movement and activity.” The Dancewear Collection’s leggings and pants consist of stripes, bright colors, and bold cuts that balance perfectly with its simpler slab tunics. Tops and bottoms are sold separately, so both retailers and consumers can have the flexibility to mix-and-match their outfits according to how they see fit. Collection is available in sizes 2T-14.

When Bravo Celeb Susanna Paliotta and Mini Entrepreneur Isabella Barrett teamed up with noted ready wear designer Toni Lyn Spaziano they had a clear vision for kids fashion “Comfortable Couture”. As Isabella puts it in her own words “Kids like it cause its comfortable, moms like it cause its couture”.

w

hat ever their secret is, it seems to be working. with an impressive line of celebrity clients, to showing the collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion week next to Michael Costello, its clear BBTC is the new player in kids clothing. BBTC launched its first collection January 19th at Styleweek Northeast to rave reviews. The providence Journal stated “its nice to see the return of classic fabrics to kids clothing.” By February BBTC had won its first design of the Year award by Style it Up and Co-designer isabella Barrett went national with the brand. By March both Susanna and isabella had their sites set on Mercedes Benz NYFw which proved to be a good move. in June that vision came true and gave them an international platform. attendees to the BBTC show included The Miss Universe organization, pop Legends allure, house wives of NJ stars and NBC TV Stars. with all of the hype, Susanna admits,“showing clothes is great but selling them is better”, and it was time to create collection #2. Susanna states “i learned to keep your brand at its highest demand if you want both kids and parents to relate to it. So with out pause we launched our matching Mommy & Me Collection at resort wear passion for Swim august 2014.” Clients really responded to the Mommy and Me looks so our vision moving forward is to add one adult look to each of our most popular pieces. Co-Founder Susanna paliotta says she has always had a passion for the Kennedy era and remembers not just watching icons like Jackie Kennedy and audrey hepburn but also her mother emily dress in classic tweed jackets to silk dresses. Susana states “it was a great era for clothing and i wanted that for my daughter. i remember as a child weather we were going to Church or the Supermarket i was dressed to the nines, from cap socks and hat to my favorite the hand muffs; which i think was invented so we would always have our hands put away” Susanna laughs. “The problem was i couldn’t find that same style of classic clothing and quality in today’s market. But after a chance meeting with designer Toni Lyn Spaiziano who shared the same vision i knew we had something special and could fill the void in the kids apparel market place.” Susanna states, “we feel so honored that our first year we got all these opportunities , we also learned what worked and what didn’t and i think it will make us a better brand for years to come.” For more information please visit: www.Boundbythecrown.com It’s a KIdsworld | 13

Retailer review

New Kids in Town  —By Janet A. Jacobs

Five new children’s wear stores bring fresh faces and vibrant excitement to neighborhoods as diverse and far-flung as Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Louisville, Kentucky, as well as various points in-between. The return of the independently owned store is a clear sign of an upturn in the national economy. Today’s new store founders are sharply focused on a strategy for success, offering fullconcept environments that meet the needs of their specific locations and demographics. Each of the new stores profiled here generates something new and unique in their local retail scenes, offering a special ambience that helps create an enjoyable shopping experience. Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Dot offers a fun and friendly shopping experience for girls. The store is bright and airy, with colorful displays and the“Dot”logo cleverly used as part of the décor. Owner Pam Giffin is as enthusiastic about the store’s locale as she is about its content—a unique mix of carefully selected clothes and accessories for school, party and play.“This is a great neighborhood to be a part of,” says Pam,“the community is welcoming and supportive.” With nearby store competition in the baby wear area, Pam wisely focuses on sizes 2-16. The store’s merchandise is divided into categories and size ranges. Pam explains, “Older girls like having their own world to shop in. We have a large selection of party dresses, which is all about the experience of shopping for a special event. That’s why we like to keep it separate.” Some of the best selling dress collections for Dot include Un Deux Trois, Zoe, Stella M’Lia and Dehry Kids, all from France. Many of the most popular dress styles are relatively simple, so they can be accessorized in different ways and worn to various events. One best selling dress is a fit-and-flared silhouette from Un Deux Trois. “I ordered it in three colors,” says Pam. “You can change the look by adding jewelry, a belt or a fun cardigan sweater.” She also lists Blush as a great dress line that is “easy and fun but still youthful.” Sleepwear and gift items are displayed together, such as flannel pajamas from Munki Munki, loungewear from Up Past 8, plush robes with super-colorful prints and fur-lined slippers decorated with modern motifs such as hash tags and peace sign daisies. The front of the store offers smaller, well-priced accessories such as socks, neon beanies, brightlycolored wallets, gloves and sunglasses. Pam says,“When I was planning the store’s design, I purposely left it neutral,” which makes a soothing contrast to the colorful product mix. In general, the strongest age range at Dot is sizes 6-14. For spring she anticipates that prints will continue to be very popular, especially bold prints seen on leggings and swimwear. Girls of all ages are showing a definite preference for soft, comfortable

fabrics in such items as leggings and tee shirts. Pam mentions the Erge collection as one that’s “really soft and really cute,” while textured knit tops by Finger in the Nose combine soft fabrics with French chic. Pam is helped by her past experience as a buyer for Saks department store, where she learned much about buying, merchandising and the financial aspects of running a store. However, she says,“I always wanted my own store. I love the interaction with the girls and their parents.” She shops the ENK Children’s Club show for new lines, and writes orders in New York sales showrooms such as Ali’s Market and Ilene Oren. Pam stays on top of her clients’ fast-changing tastes by interaction on Dot’s social media sites.“Social media is huge, and it has to be constant,” says Pam. “You have to keep up with what the girls want.”She strives to find the right balance between what girls want and what their parents want—a challenging task! Judging by Dot’s first year in business, she’s doing that very successfully. November 1st, 2014 saw the opening of “The Garden State’s”first organic children’s store, Hudson St. Organic Baby and Kids in Montclair, New Jersey. Within the sophisticated and savvy neighborhood of Montclair, many residents are glad to have the opportunity to purchase all-organic products for their children and gifts. Co- owners/partners Nikki Mammano and Heather McCormick are justifiably proud of their new “baby”, and their enthusiasm is contagious.“We’re not trying to scare anyone, we’re just offering a safer choice,” Nikki and Heather agree. “People walk in the store and thank us for opening. Ten years ago most people were not ready for the concept of Whole Foods. Today this type of organic food store is extremely popular. It’s going to be the same for children’s clothing.” Nikki is particularly concerned with the purity of fabrics. “My children always had organic mattresses. I knew they were putting their faces into the mattress, breathing it in, and that chemicals can be absorbed through the skin. And those flame retardant fabrics used for sleepwear in the USA… so many carcinogens! In Europe these fabrics are not allowed.” The store occupies a bright, spacious corner location with a welcoming, easy-going atmosphere. Unlike the subdued and sometimes even dreary selections of organic clothes years past, today’s organic collections offer a wonderful range of rich colors and playful touches. Heather says, “The first organic lines I discovered were Janey Baby and Baby Soy.” Janey Baby represents the Jane Goodall Foundation, and naturally all items feature artwork of animals, such as onesies with painterly graphics from naturalist and conservator Goodall’s books. A percentage of Janey Baby sales are donated to help the foundation. Among the store’s other organic clothing lines are Origini, from India; Kickee Pants, made of super-soft 100% bamboo, which is great for kids with skin problems; Brooklyn-based Winter Water Factory, highlighting artistic screen prints inspired by 1970’s wallpaper designs; the Kate Quinn collection of stylish knit and woven items; and a strong selection from the popular Finn & Emma line. Accessories and other categories offered include shoes by Bobox, which contain no lead and are

scientifically designed to fit properly, crib sheets, swaddling blankets, diaper bags, bibs, nursery shawls, toys, and more—all made of materials that are completely safe and chemical-free. Nikki and Heather strive to make Hudson St. Organic a comfortable and fun place to congregate, as well as to shop. The store offers special day events such as customized shoe sizing services offered by children’s shoe expert Jennifer Lee, story-telling sessions, and a ”hand-me-down” system to recycle customer’s organic clothing, giving proceeds to the Montclair Food Pantry. A spacious baby-changing area, give-away organic lollipops and free organic tea all add to the store’s friendly, welcoming aura, proving that shopping for safe, organic products certainly doesn’t have to be boring. When GingerBean opened its doors in September, 2014, owner/manager Linda Kingsbury realized a long time dream to have her own store that began when she was a dress design student. “I’ve always wanted to do this,” said Linda. “However, I’m not the risk-taker in the family.” That is why she waited until so many key factors of success came together before launching GingerBean. First was selecting the right store location-- a high-visibility, high end shopping area of Hendersonville, Tennessee. Next was creating the special ambience that makes shopping at Ginger Bean a unique experience.”I tried to search out things that are really different. I carry a really good mix of lines, some traditional and some trendy—a full range of different looks. I want Ginger Bean to be a one-stop store,” says Linda. Selecting décor to create the right mood for the store was a key focus for Linda. Best described as “modern vintage”, it combines vintage retro looks with modern elements to give it a unique twist. The store’s merchandise is entirely colorcoordinated, with clothing and other items such as blankets, bibs and accessories arranged together with same-color items. “It’s all right here, organized and neat, with information clearly marked on the hangar. It’s a different way to display, it’s easy to shop and people love it!” Linda remarks. The merchandise mix at GingerBean is equally eclectic. Sizes range from Preemie to 16 in girl’s wear and Preemie to 12 for boys.“For Spring, I’ll have the biggest selection of lines for girls’ sizes 7-16 in the area,” says Linda.“When I go to market

30 | It’s a Kidsworld

I search out things that are different. My clients are generally not traditional people. They’re looking for something special.” Carefully selected from lines found at the Atlanta Americas Mart, Summer Place Showroom, Janet Hunter Hawkins and Teacup Tots showrooms, some of the store’s top selling brands include Kate Mack/Biscotti, Katie Rose, Lemon Loves Lime, Persnickety, Jak & Peppar, Mustard Pie, Isabella & Chloe, Le Za Me, Ruffle Butts, Tea, Kalliope Kids and more. For boys, GingerBean will carry Tailor Vintage, Zutanos, Kickee Pants, Le Top, Rugged Butts, Tea and others. For spring, Linda is enthusiastic about incoming nautical groups and“beach looks” featuring neutral and sand colors. Ginger Bean keeps up with social media by posting each day on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. They also send regular e-mail blasts for store sales and events. However it is the creative atmosphere, color-organized product displays and original mix of merchandise that make shopping at Ginger Bean such a delightful experience. Heather Silvis, owner of This Little Piggy in Aberdeen, North Carolina, knew she had a unique opportunity when opening the store in November, 2014.“There are a lot of people living here in Aberdeen, but there’s only one other children’s boutique and one maternity store in town,”she says.“And there are no major retail competitors such as Babies R Us or Target stores here. The closest shopping center is forty minutes away!” The store is located in the historic downtown area, housed in a charmingly renovated old building that had not been occupied for ten years. Because the store’s rent is reasonable, Heather is able to keep her merchandise price points at affordable levels. Favorable prices are not the only advantage of this new children’s wear venue. Heather offers a diverse selection of lines to meet the varied tastes of her customers. “There are a lot of socially-conscious, ‘crunchy granola’ moms,” explains Heather.“I carry many small brands owned by stay-at-home moms. “We feature the Bella Tunno collection, which offers the Big Initiative Program, connecting one needy person in America to a meal for every Bella Tunno product that’s sold. I think it’s important to give back.”The store’s merchandise mix comes from many parts of the world. The Pebble collection, a fair trade company operating out of Bangladesh is featured,

as are HABA toys from Germany and Little Frog baby wraps from Poland. Starting in February, the store will hopefully carry Kissy Kissy baby clothes made of top quality Peruvian Pima cotton. Heather is also eagerly anticipating the arrival of The Three Sisters collection, which she finds extremely popular and well-priced. This Little Piggy maintains an active Facebook page, with new posts every day and “Daily Deals” offered for special merchandise. Heather uses the Internet to research the best prices offered on items she carries, and then matches her price points to those available on-line. Although the store has been open only one month, she’s already had to re-order blankets from Cuddle Couture. “I’m getting lots of good feedback on them, “says Heather. “The quality is lovely, super-soft. They’re made of Minky fabric and are trimmed with a satin ruffle.”These great gift items come in sizes for everyone from babies to adults. When asked about regional preferences of her area, Heather quickly answers,“Hair bows! In the South, girls love their hair bows.” Naturally This Little Piggy carries a big assortment of adorably- styled bows. FRESH Boutique 4 Girls opened on November 1st, 2014 in Westport Village, an outdoor mall located in Louisville, Kentucky. Westport Village caters to families and singles alike, combining great shopping with restaurants and special events. FRESH immediately became a popular new destination for mall visitors, enticing shoppers with up-to-the minute trendy merchandise. Says owner Shelly Breier, ”FRESH specializes in tween girls. We carry apparel, accessories, shoes and gifts

for girls ages 7-16, including a selection of designer brands that were not available before in Louisville, Kentucky.”Asked about some of the best selling brands for FRESH, Shelly says,” We do very well with Pinc Premium, Vintage Havana, BlankNYC, Malibu Sugar, Kiddo, Splendid, Ella Moss and Sally Miler. These designers have it all figured out in terms of style paired with comfort. All of the clothes are super soft, which is of upmost importance to tween girls.” FRESH keeps a direct line of communication open to clients through social media. Although the store has been open only a short time, they already have a great following on Facebook and Instagram. FRESH is also on Twitter and will be branching out to Pinterest soon. Although Shelly plans to launch the FRESH website in early 2015, she believes it is still preferable to be able to shop in person, especially for this age group. “Shopping for tweens on-line can be difficult for sizing and comfortability. It’s nice for our customers to have the option to come in to try on the clothes and shoes,” she says. When asked about her predictions for upcoming new tends in spring 2015, Shelly says emphatically, “Two words: Pom-poms and pineapples! Well, I guess that’s technically three words. Comfort will be trending for this demographic. Flowing harem pants, maxi dresses and tunics will be very in, while Aztec, tropical prints and tribal themed prints will be all the rage.”There is no doubt that Fresh Boutique 4 Girls will be offering the most popular seasonal trends and sought-after collections for the selective, style-conscious shopper.
