FY 23 A CANVAS OF POTENTIAL

A Legacy of Impact

KID smART, founded by visionary artists Campbell Hutchinson and Allison Stewart, has been a driving force in providing arts-rich education to public school students. With an impressive legacy spanning 24 years, we have empowered over 63,442 students and 11,396 teachers throughout the city.

At KID smART, our mission is to engage children and educators in dynamic, creative, and relevant learning through the arts. We are deeply committed to enriching lives through arts education and ensuring equal access to the transformative power of the arts for ALL members of the New Orleans community. Our multifaceted approach involves:

Empowering Schools

KID smART makes schools more joyful and effective places to teach and learn. We partner with public schools, integrating the arts into their daily curriculum through our Creative Schools program. We create engaging and effective learning environments by infusing creativity into core subjects.

Elevating Educators

We provide year-round professional development opportunities for educators, equipping them with innovative teaching techniques that harness the full potential of the arts. By empowering teachers, we ensure a sustained impact on students’ growth.

Engaging the Community

Beyond the classroom, we organize free community events celebrating the arts, fostering a sense of togetherness and cultural appreciation. These events unite families and neighbors in the joy of creative expression.

Through our concerted efforts in schools, support for educators, and vibrant community engagement, KID smART seeks to empower individuals of all ages in New Orleans to embrace their creativity, nurture their talents, and find inspiration through the arts.

KID smART Annual Report
We need art to foster a healthy and joyful relationship with learning in a school environment

From Our Executive Director

Dear KID smART Family,

I have heard that as we get older time passes more quickly. I can tell you that this was the fastest school year I have ever experienced. It feels like just last week the KID smART programming team was planning out the year and already the year is over. And what a year it was. We had amazing highs, serving the largest number of schools to date, working with incredible educators through our workshops, and celebrating the 20th anniversary of Cocktails for KID smART. And we experienced deep lows when we lost our co-founder and friend Campbell Hutchinson.

And now, in what feels like the blink of an eye, KID smART is entering our 25th year. We’re exploring ways to deepen our connections to the communities we serve both near and far, creating partnerships with more schools and cultural organizations, and planning our inaugural Arts Education Conference, to be held next summer. We’re also continuing to grow and welcome new staff and board members who share our values of collaboration, creativity, sustainability, access, and equity. Many of you have supported us through the last quarter century, and some of you are new members of the KID smART family. I want you to know that we are so honored to have your support and we couldn’t do this highly impactful work without you.

Warmly,

Education Through Imagination

Imagine a classroom where learning comes alive through creativity, where students not only grasp academic subjects but also express their understanding through art. That’s the essence of arts integration—an innovative teaching approach that ignites learners’ imaginations.

At KID smART, we believe in the transformative potential of arts integration. It’s about connecting different subjects with artistic expression to create meaningful and memorable learning experiences. For example, students may explore geometric shapes through dance, bring historical events to life through theater, or express scientific concepts through visual arts.

By infusing the arts into core curricula, we unlock new avenues for comprehension and expression. Student achievement soars, engagement flourishes, and learning becomes a joyous journey. Every teacher we work with has reported improvement in their students’ confidence, tenacity, and consideration of others’ perspectives.

100% of teachers in our partner schools agree that arts integration improves student outcomes.

The impact of arts integration is undeniable. By fostering creativity, we empower young minds to embrace challenges, express themselves authentically, and empathize with diverse viewpoints. Arts integration is not just about learning—it’s about fostering a lifelong love of exploration, curiosity, and growth.

7

A Spectrum of Success

KID smART’s co-teaching model shined brightly through the remarkable collaboration between Teaching Artist Kitty and Ms. Bates, fostering what was fondly known as “The Rainbow Classroom.” Together, they saw growth in the majority of their 2nd-grade students, including more than half that are ELL (English language learners).

By combining visual arts with their ELA and Science coursework, 75% of students reached proficiency in expressing themselves through art and transforming written text into works of art . Moreover, 75% could delve into their science studies by conducting thorough and captivating research.

Demonstrating

Rainbow Classroom was how arts integration became a bridge to reach children who didn’t speak English.

Kitty’s creative approach opened new doors for these students, allowing them to blossom and become more engaged and interested in their work. Unable to express themselves fully through language, they found their voice and emotions in art.

The culmination of their collaboration was celebrated with a student performance about pollination at Jazz Fest and an interview on WGNO. The recognition highlighted how KID smART’s arts integration methodology enriches the academic experience and creates an inclusive and supportive environment where all students can shine brightly on their own unique stage.

FY23 Major Accomplishments

Arts Education Amplified

KID smART has experienced remarkable growth in our press reach, expanding our visibility and impact in the community. Our commitment to arts education has garnered the attention of prominent media outlets, leading to multiple interviews on TV networks such as Fox8, WWLTV, WVUE, and more. These opportunities have allowed us to raise awareness about the transformative power of arts education, further inspire creativity, and enrich the lives of children across our region. Special thanks to the team at Gamble Media Group for their support!

Celebrating 20 Years of Cocktails for KID smART: A RecordBreaking Success for Arts Education

This year marked Cocktails for KID smART’s 20th anniversary, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the incredible support we received from our community. Together, we raised an astonishing $160,000, making it our most successful event to date. These funds will directly contribute to the expansion of KID smART’s Creative School programming, enabling us to reach even more students in need. Our dedicated event co-chairs, Krystal Hardy Allen, Martine Chaisson Linares, and Jeanette “J.R.” Weiland, alongside the generous support of The Aida Smith Johnson Fund for Children as the presenting sponsor, ensured the event’s tremendous success. Save the date for next year’s CFK— March 21st, 2024.

Homegrown Cultivates a Brighter Future Through Commitment to Literacy

In partnership with the New Orleans Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, KID smART’s Homegrown Institute brought together 58 passionate educators, counselors, and instructors for a 3-day immersive experience. Focused on building arts and literacy in summer camps and after-school programs, the Institute equipped participants with a wealth of engaging strategies, from lesson planning to classroom management. Through interactive lessons, attendees embraced a learner’s perspective, igniting their childlike joy and reimagining the art of teaching. Attendees left empowered with a deeper understanding of teaching literacy and a shared commitment to creating engaging and inclusive learning environments.

A Generous Gift from Lauren Daigle

Long time KID smART supporter Lauren Daigle, generously gifted KID smART $100,000 allowing us to further expand our Creative Schools programming. Lauren’s commitment to supporting holistic and joyful learning helps thousands of students gain access to arts-integrated learning, and we’re so grateful for her ongoing support.

Music, Art, and Emotions Unite

Our With Feeling & Music Curriculum underwent a successful pilot program in four schools, fostering social-emotional literacy through the arts. Collaborating with our skilled Arts Integration Specialist, Ms. Mia, and two local musicians/composers from Lyrica Baroque, students engaged in five enriching sessions exploring the elements of music, visual art, and social-emotional development. They learned to express their emotions through various artistic mediums and experienced the profound impact of visual art and music on their feelings. The program yielded impressive results, with students displaying increased confidence, empathy, and emotional intelligence. As we look ahead, we are excited to expand the With Feeling Curriculum to reach more young minds, empowering them with essential skills for a brighter and more compassionate future.

15 KID smART Annual Report

From Our Board Chair

I have been so impressed with the evolution of the KID smART organization since my first introduction to it in 2009 when, as a new third grade teacher at the former McDonogh 32 Literacy Charter School in Algiers, I received a transfer student from a KID smART Creative School who bragged about his KID smART theater arts teacher.

With the passing of KID smART co-founder Campbell Hutchinson this year, a natural reflection point happened and allowed us to appreciate the vision that artists Campbell Hutchinson and Allison Stewart have achieved through founding KID smART in 1999 to provide public school students with greater access to arts-rich education: KID smART has served more than 32,000 students and 5,000 teachers in schools throughout New Orleans!

This year, KID smART has achieved remarkable milestones:

KID smART reached a record number of 15 Creative School partnerships for the 2022-23 school year;

• KID smART introduced arts integration curriculum to nearly 30% of New Orleans public schools;

• 95% of students say they have fun learning when participating in KID smART.

It has been a privilege to serve as board chair for KID smART and to invest my time and financial support into this organization whose vision is to create an educational landscape where the arts empower all children to access their full academic, creative, and personal potential. KID smART’s mission is the North Star for its strategic planning, resource allocation, and execution and implementation of its proprietary programming with students in Louisiana.

I was intrigued by KID smART in 2009 and have continued to be impressed and inspired by the work of KID smART’s teaching artists and staff. As I retire from the board, I hope you will join me in continuing to support their work and mission.

KID smART Financial Report

KID smART remained financially strong, demonstrating fiscal resilience and responsible resource management. Notably, we experienced significant growth in individual donor support, a testament to the increasing trust and belief in our mission. This financial stability and expanding donor base have empowered us to continue providing transformative arts education to children in the community, enhancing their creative potential and fostering a brighter future.
