CELEBRATING A SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Artists Campbell Hutchinson and Allison Stewart founded KID smART in 1999 to provide public school students with greater access to arts education. In its 22-year history, KID smART has served more than 32,000 students and 5,000 teachers in schools throughout New Orleans. With the belief that the power of the arts should be available to ALL New Orleans children, KID smART works within public schools to reach underserved children with the most to gain from an arts-rich, social-emotional education.
At KID smART, we’re on a mission to engage children and educators in dynamic, creative, and relevant learning through the arts. We envision an educational landscape where the arts empower all children to access their full academic, creative, and personal potential. We are guided by our values of collaboration, creativity, sustainability, and access & equity.
Last school year, KID smART provided a holistic and evidence-based suite of arts education programming:
Daily arts integration at 14 schools through our Creative Schools program
Year-round professional development for educators
Curriculum and literacy initiatives
Community and family engagement events
The most interesting thing I learned this year with my KID smART artist, was that you can do anything if you try, and believe.
When I moved into the role of Executive Director five years ago, I had no idea about the surprises, delights, and challenges that awaited. We’ve weathered school closures, leadership transitions, a pandemic, and hurricanes. We’ve cheered our students as they perform at Jazz Fest and exhibit their artwork at the Ogden Museum. We’ve seen deeply committed teachers dedicate their evenings and summer vacations to participating in training and workshops. It’s worth it; 100% of teachers who participated in both KID smART training and a Collaborative Artist Residency saw significant improvement in their students’ confidence, active engagement, ownership of learning, and classroom community.
We know that the arts are an essential part of learning, but still, arts learning is seen as inconsequential. Together, we can advocate for the vision of schools our children deserve. Because the true product of arts education is not the art on the wall or the performance at Jazz Fest, but the child themself.
Thanks to our supporters and passionate team of Board, staff, and Teaching Artists, KID smART is thriving. We’re working with a record number of partner schools, creating innovative programs to address virtual teacher training, early literacy development, and social-emotional growth. We have a 5-year strategic plan that will take us to our 25th anniversary and beyond. We’re excited about what the future holds, and we couldn’t do this without you and your support.
Warmly,
Elise Gallinot Goldman, Executive DirectorArts integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding of an academic subject through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets objectives in both.
94% of teachers in our partner schools agree that arts integration improves student outcomes.
Bringing the arts into core curricula raises student achievement, improves student engagement, and creates JOYFUL learning experiences.
100% of teachers saw significant improvement in their students’ confidence, tenacity, and consideration of others’ perspectives after working with KID smART.
Piloted in the fall of 2018, ArtsLiteracy NOLA evolved out of the ArtsLiteracy Project at Brown University and the growing awareness that students reading below grade level at the start of fourth grade are likely to slip further and further behind as their education progresses. That year, KID smART was able to serve 650 K-3 students at two FirstLine Schools and compare student test scores between control schools and treatment schools.
Following the three-year pilot, 76% of students at treatment schools were reading at grade level compared to 69% at control schools.
In 2021, KID smART received multi-year funding from W. K. Kellogg Foundation and Baptist Community Ministries to expand ArtsLiteracy NOLA, thus helping a broader set of students succeed. Between 20212022, KID smART provided ArtsLiteracy NOLA to 1,400 students in grades K-8 at 14 Orleans Parish public schools and 500 additional students through partnerships with summer learning programs.
Arts Literacy is made possible thanks to:
14 Creative Schools, the 2021-2022 school year has been KID smART’s largest to date! We’re proud to have expanded considerably into the New Orleans East region.
90% of teachers reported that working with KID smART improved their connection and engagement as an educator
This spring, the With Feeling curriculum developed by KID smART partnered with the Power of Language program from Lyrica Baroque to provide a comprehensive educational experience for kindergarten students at Langston Hughes Academy.
With Feeling is an arts-integrated, social-emotional literacy program that teaches students how to manage their emotions effectively to increase personal power, safety, health, and happiness for themselves and others.
Meanwhile, the Power of Language program employs music to help students recognize and understand their emotions, build coping mechanisms, and improve their communication skills.
Many students who face emotional or behavioral challenges struggle to excel academically. Thus, emotional literacy is a vital component of student development and success.
The initial pilot of this program saw a KID smART Arts Integration Specialist and Lyrica Baroque musicians visit classrooms to perform and teach with original compositions. Through this collaboration, the kindergarten students learned how to communicate confidently and empathetically, achieve academic success, and understand that no feeling is final!
Over 450 people flocked to the 7th Ward for ART JAM, KID smART’s free family arts festival, making it our most successful to date. Our community created and celebrated the arts together on a beautiful sunny afternoon. With 13 partner organizations in attendance, ART JAM showcased New Orlean’s commitment to the arts and our youth.
On March 10, 2022, KID smART brought back its much-anticipated annual fundraiser, Cocktails for KID smART (CFK). KID smART held the event at The Shop at the CAC with music from PJ Morton and the New Orleans All-Stars. Patrons received limited edition giclee prints from artists Ron Bechet and Brent Houzenga.
In 2022, CFK raised a staggering $107,000, accounting for over 10% of KID smART’s annual operating budget. These funds will be used to support arts integration at the organization’s 14 Creative Schools, making a meaningful impact on the lives of countless young students in the community.
KID smART is currently participating in Beloved Community’s Equity In Schools Cohort. This 8-month program allows KID smART staff and Board to assess our individual and organizational DEI capacity and set priorities. The resulting Equity Plan will work in conjunction with KID smART’s current 5-year strategic plan and ensure sustainable, long-term commitment to change and accountability.
I was a supporter of KID smART before I knew what KID smART was. In 2009 I was a third-grade teacher at McDonogh 32 in Algiers who received a transfer student from a KID smART Creative School. All my new student talked about was how he missed ‘Miss Ferdinand’ who brought theater to his classroom lessons with his ‘regular’ teacher. I was intrigued…arts as a tool to engage learners? A second teacher in the classroom?
Fast forward to July 2020, when I began my term as Board Chair for KID smART. The staff and the previous board leadership had navigated the organization through some of the most uncertain months of the pandemic, so I felt really confident about stepping into my role. And from my new vantage point, it has been a privilege to see our children’s academic accomplishments in partnership with our KID smART Teaching Artists and programming.
It’s also with pride that I have watched the organization achieve other milestones
KID smART Teaching Artists providing social-emotional support to students, families, and school staff while co-teaching and developing rigorous daily lesson plans for virtual classrooms;
KID smART completing its multi-year strategic plan in the midst of the COVID-19
KID smART expanding the number of Creative School partnerships because schools recognize our value, even amid a global crisis.
It’s a privilege to serve as Board Chair for KID smART and to invest my time and financial support into ensuring that children in Louisiana receive dynamic, creative, and relevant learning through the arts. I hope you will join me in supporting KID smART’s mission.
Toryah Cameron, Board ChairDespite the uncertainty ushered in by the pandemic, KID smART has remained financially strong, with fiscal year 2022 seeing significant growth in individual donor support. As the organization continues to expand the depth and breadth of its programming, the need to diversify revenue streams is as vital as ever. *pre-audit numbers
