A Letter From KIDS Center’s Executive Director Season’s Greetings from all of us at KIDS Center! As fall arrives, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the year we’ve experienced so far, to consider where KIDS Center is today, and look forward optimistically as we continue to help children heal and turn the corner towards a better future. We are continuing to adapt and think creatively about how to provide our services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our staff team continues to take every precaution to minimize transmission risks, and that effort has resulted in positive steps such as teletherapy sessions for clients who desire to participate in counseling online, creation of a rotating onsite daily team to conduct child abuse evaluations and learning how to stay connected, supported, and productive in this new world of virtual meetings. This thinking has led to much positive change, including professional growth opportunities for many veteran staff. In 2021, we added capacity in the Forensic Interview area, and added critical support positions for our Evaluation Team, all of which have strengthened our services. Our professional staff continue to do incredible work of the highest quality, ensuring the children, families, and partners we serve receive our very best every day. 2

Moving forward, we are taking a fresh look at our strategic plan. As our world continues to grapple with the impact of the pandemic, and the Central Oregon region continues to grow and evolve, it is imperative that we position KIDS Center to meet the increased needs that come with a larger population. Together with our Board of Directors, we look forward to connecting with members of our community as we conduct this planning process to guide our focus during the years to come. We could not function without the incredible support of our community. With our deepest gratitude, thank you for being a friend of KIDS Center, and thank you for supporting our mission to prevent, evaluate and treat child abuse. Onward!

Thank You For Your Service!

Throughout the pandemic KIDS Center’s board remains strong, providing sound guidance and support to help weather the storm. Meet our newest board members! TALENA BARKER VP Leadership Development, Bend Chamber “I’ve been honored to work with KIDS Center over the last 12+ years, and joining the board was an exciting next step. My hope in working with the board is to leverage my professional skill sets and connections to support the children and families who so urgently need the services provided by KIDS Center and their stellar staff.”

SHARON WOJDA Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, City of Bend “I am passionate about helping kids, and most of my volunteer efforts have been focused on providing mentoring and educational opportunities for children. I first became familiar with KIDS Center and the great work they do in the community when I joined the City of Bend finance department in 2004, because we have been preparing Easter baskets for KIDS Center for the last 20 years! I am continually impressed by the hard working KIDS Center staff, and it’s an honor to join the Board!”

Recognizing Our Board of Directors KIDS Center is fortunate to have a wonderful group of compassionate, smart, dedicated members of our community serving on our board of directors. During the pandemic, when all of us have had to adapt how we work and care for our families, board members have continued to volunteer their time, expertise, passion and steadfast support to KIDS Center, always with the common goal of helping children and families impacted by abuse. Our board members come from varied backgrounds and bring their unique perspectives to the table. We’re grateful for their dedication to KIDS Center, particularly during this challenging time.

Welcome To the Team!

2020 brought much change for everyone including KIDS Center! We decided to make the most of it and hire some really great people! Hear what they like most about their new jobs…

RILEY BRODERICK, Family Advocate “Being a family advocate, I am deeply grateful for the genuine connection and impact that is made in the lives that need it the most. The compassion that is gained through this work is something that will stick with me forever.“ SARAH GRAZIANI, Forensic Interviewer “I love working directly with children and youth. I love being one-on-one with a child and listening to their story. Oftentimes you can almost see the weight come off of their shoulders when they are finished sharing. They are all different and unpredictable and sweet and funny. It is a privilege to interview them. I also love working with such a passionate and professional team at KIDS Center!” GUITAR HANNA, Medical Director “What I love most about my job as a medical examiner is being able to connect with kiddos during their check-up, reassuring them that their bodies are healthy, and empowering them with the knowledge of their body, their choice.” KATIE IVES, Front Office & Volunteer Coordinator, “I love working at KIDS Center because everyone shares the same vision and is passionate about our mission to help children. I work with professionals that I can learn from and will encourage me to take on new and challenging opportunities.” GABRIELLE PYNE, Intake Specialist “I love ending each day knowing that I’ve truly helped a child. I love having a job that makes a difference. I am overjoyed to be in this position and be a part of an incredible workplace.” 4

ALLISON RAMIREZ Development Office/Online Specialist, “Working at KIDS Center not only fulfills my love for putting on events and connecting with the local community, but it is a way for me to give back to the families whom we serve that need it most.” KAILA STARMER, Family Advocate “I enjoy being a part of a team that works intentionally and with great passion to help ensure kiddos and families in our communities can flourish despite terrible circumstances of abuse. I feel honored to have the opportunity to offer support to families who allow me to work alongside them as they navigate through extraordinary challenges.” RENEE STAVRON, Executive Asst/HR Generalist “I am happy when the employees at KIDS Center at every level know and understand their part in supporting our mission. What I love most about my job is my contribution in developing a culture where people want to work and stay.”

Become a Partner in Prevention In 2020, Bend Fire & Rescue became Central Oregon’s first Darkness to Light Partner in Prevention. Bend Fire & Rescue trained over 90% of their staff in the child sexual abuse prevention curriculum as a way to further support and protect the children and families they come in contact with on a regular basis. The Partner in Prevention distinction is an annual distinction for an organization or business that has committed the time and effort to educate themselves on how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Imagine a community where 100s of businesses and organizations work to gain this distinction. Where a child can walk into any business be it a bank, a retail store, a nonprofit, or a restaurant and know that they can seek help from any adult. A community where businesses strategically and intentionally work to find ways to support children and families.

In addition to being placed on a national registry you will receive: • A dated window cling and poster to display the Partner in Prevention emblem at their organizations or place of business

KIDS Center launches our new DEI Task Force We are excited to share an exciting update from KIDS Center’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Team. In 2020, KIDS Center dedicated increased time and resources to better incorporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in our workplace and in our services for clients.
