2012 Morgan Horse Grand National & World Championship Once again, Morgan horses, riders and fans will rendezvous in Oklahoma City for the annual Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show. You can check out the action from October 6-13.

f you love Morgans, you’ll want to get to the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in October.

Once you get there you’ll have lots of company: over 5,000 other Morgan admirers will be there with you, along with more than 1,000 horses, and they will be coming from 45 states and four nations to compete. This show is a big deal.

The horse show takes place in three separate arenas, allowing the versatility of Morgans to be fully revealed. The competition begins Saturday, October 6, and there are three sessions each day through Sunday, October 13. Titles will be award-

ed to Grand National and World Champions.

The classes are saddle seat, hunt seat, and western and driving divisions, as well as hunter over fences and jumpers, dressage, western dressage, carriage driving and reining.

one of the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) state and regional Youth of the Year contests. They come to Oklahoma City to compete for the AMHA National Youth of the Year at the Grand National & World Championship

There is also a National Youth of the Year winner.

Competitors for this title must be youth 14 and older. They must also have previously received high scores on a written test, a ridden pattern, a judged contest and an oral presentation from

Morgan Horse Show.

The winner of this prestigious title will receive a customized prize package that may include the chance to go to national conventions or participate in an internship, as well as a scholarship or custom riding apparel.

This show is a very big deal.

When the last class on the last day is over, the vendors will pack up and leave. The spectators will all go home. The owners will load horses into trailers and hit the road until next year. And by the end of that last class on that last day, over $300,000 in prize money and awards will have been presented to those owners and exhibitors of the competing horses. The National Academy Championship Finals

This is it, the show that brings academy riders from all over America, and crowns the best as they ride in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

he National Academy Championship Horse Show is a three-round competition held November 2-4 in Murfreesburo, Tennessee. Over the three-day show, riders must qualify in the first two rounds to make it to the final round.

Sound difficult? It is, but it’s lots of fun, and an affordable way to get into the excitement of show ring competition.

The Academy Division has two uses: one as a training ground for new students interested in getting experience in the show ring, the other as a final destination for students who prefer to continue to show and compare their skills against other riders. Whether you are a new academy rider or you have been competing in academy shows for years, the National Academy Championship Horse Show is a great place to learn from the best.

The judges and the awards for the show are always first-rate, and 2012 is no exception. This

year’s judges will be Sherry Brandl, Mark Bodnar and Cindy Mugnier. The top ten Finalists in the Jr. and Sr. Divisions will be presented with the highly coveted tri-colored Grand Championship ribbon, a custom made medallion, a neck ribbon, and a U.S. Savings Bond. The Sr. Eq-

What else makes the National Academy Championship Horse Show so special? It is the only academy show in the country to present an annual Trainer of the Year award, given to the trainer with the most wins at the National Academy Horse Show that year. The Early Days of Oklahoma City Maybe you have been to Oklahoma City several times competing at the Morgan Grand National & World Championship. Maybe you are going for your first time this year. But do you know about Oklahoma City’s very unconventional start?

it came to be known as a nice town for raising a family.

Keep in mind: people were shot at and killed over claims. That’s because picking a good claim was serious business. If you were going to run a hotel, you needed a claim in the heart of the city. If you were going to ship cattle, you would want to be near the railroad. If you wanted to run a ranch, you would need a claim with good access to water. Your family’s future would depend on whether the claim you picked was a good one for your trade. And the Homestead Act said if you stayed on your claim and improved it, then after five years it was yours—free and clear of any other claim. It starts to make sense why those early settlers went tearing across the prairie when that cannon was fired.

It’s easy to tune out when you are in history class, but the next time you hear the term Land Run, stop and think what it meant to be part of that intense competition for land. There were a lot of people killed trying to stake and later defend their claims. Native Americans lost a piece of their land grant in the process. And while the fortunes of many settlers were made, the fortunes of others were lost forever.

My horse has a swollen eye and there is some white discharge coming from that eye. What caused this to happen, and what should I do about it?

A: A swollen eye always justifies a call to your veterinarian. Eye injuries may not appear severe at first, but they can become complicated if treatment is delayed.

There are many reasons a horse could have a swollen eye. First, horses are prey animals and their flight instinct is high. This means it is common for a horse to spook and then hit their eye on something. Second, just like with people, horses’ eyes can become irritated by dust and pollen. Third, horses can develop a swollen eye from foreign bodies. Since horses are grazers, their heads are down at the ground around plants. It is very common for an insect or grass seed to get trapped near a horse’s eye, which can lead to pain and irritation.

Once your vet arrives, he or she will probably look at your horse from a distance to see how swollen the eye is, and how both eyes look compared to each other. They will then use an ophthalmoscope to look closely at the eye, to determine if there is any inflammation or damage inside the eye.

During the exam, your vet should use a fluorescein stain

strip, which will help detect corneal ulcers or defects on the outer surface of the eye. This is an interesting test to watch, because the tear film that covers the surface of the horse’s eye will appear a neon green color for a short period of time.

The next step of the examination is a digital exam. What this means is your horse’s eye will be temporarily numbed with medication so your vet can use a finger to feel along the surface of the eye and under the eyelids. This allows us to find any foreign body that could be causing the eye condition.

The type of medication chosen will depend on whether a defect is seen on the surface of the eye.

If so, your horse will need to have medication placed on the surface of their eye several times a day to help them get well and feel better.

Your horse will also need a medication called Banamine, which is like Advil for people. This will decrease the swelling around the eye, and will need to be given for several days.

The majority of eye problems, once treated correctly, heal well. However, a swollen eye is always a cause for concern, so call your veterinarian. n

How Many Are There?

Supplies: Large glass jar Candy: candy corns or miniature candy bars Preparation: Fill the jar with candy, counting as you go. Write down the final number and put it in a safe (and secret!) place.

How to Play: Each player guesses how many candies are in the jar. Write down their guess along with their name on a pad of paper. At the end of the party, announce the winner: the person who guessed the closest to the actual number of candies in the jar. The prize is the candy and the jar.

Supplies: 2 large plastic trick-or-treat pumpkins 24 ping pong balls Assorted color sharpie markers (black, blue, blown, green, red) Timer Preparation: Use the sharpie markers to draw an iris and pupil along with “bloodshot” eyeball lines on each ping pong ball.

How to play: Divide players into two teams. Each team gets 12 ping pong balls. Place the pumpkins a few feet in front of the starting line. Have the teams line up behind the starting line and set the timer for 3 minutes.

At “go,” the first player in each line tries to bounce the “eyeball” off the floor and into the pumpkin. If it goes in, the next one in lines gets a new eyeball. If it didn’t go in, the first person has to chase the eyeball down and pass it to the next player. Keep going until the timer goes off. The team with the most eyeballs inside their pumpkin wins.

Running With Eyeballs

Supplies: 2 large plastic trick-or-treat pumpkins 24 ping pong balls 2 large soup spoons Assorted color sharpie markers (black, blue, blown, green, red) Preparation: Using sharpie markers, draw an iris, pupil and “bloodshot” eyeball lines on each ping pong ball. Take the plastic pumpkins and put them next to each other at the end of the room, leaving a clear runway for both teams from the starting line.

How to play: Divide into two teams; each team gets one spoon. Each person gets an eyeball; the first person on each team places theirs on their team’s spoon. At “go,” that person races to her team pumpkin at the end of the room, dropping the eyeball into the pumpkin, and not on the floor. An eyeball dropped on the floor must be retrieved and put in the pumpkin before your leg of the race is done.

Return to the starting line, and pass the spoon to the next player. The team that finishes first wins.

Waiting for My Hay...

Goldie takes a trip down memory lane.

oday was a very special day for me. My old friend came to visit! Since she lives in Maine and I live in Kentucky, we don’t get to see each other very often. Seeing her today made me think of all the people I have known throughout my show career. I think I will tell you about my past while I wait for my future…dinner time, of course!

I was born in a huge stall in a barn in Missouri. My mother had been a famous show horse who retired to have beautiful babies, like me. My mother and I lived in a perfect place. The people let us out in the morning so my mother could eat grass and I could play, and then they put us back in before it got too hot outside. There were other foals and broodmares in neighboring pastures, so we had lots of friends. It was great.

When I got to be a little older, I moved away from my mother into a large pasture with other yearlings. That means we were all

one year old. Horses turn one year older every year on January 1st, regardless of when our birthdays really are! I missed my mother, but had a lot of fun playing with my friends. Then one day, they took all the yearlings into the barn and started teaching us things, like how to lead, how to let people touch us, and how to stand still for the vet.

I was two when they started riding me. I didn’t raise a fuss like some did; I have always liked carrying my human friends around on my back. The girl who trained me was nice and quiet and I knew her pretty well even before she started riding me, so I knew she was someone I could trust. She started taking me to local shows so I got used to the hustle and bustle of the show world before I had to start showing myself.

The first time I showed, I was really nervous. It was weird going in the ring with all of the other horses and going around like that.

My trainer was really confident, though, and she helped me by telling me where to go every second, so I didn’t have to worry about what to do next. I didn’t win that first class, but I did get a ribbon and my trainer was very proud of me. She even gave me a peppermint! (She was my visitor today, and she still had a peppermint for me.)

I continued to show a lot. I was pretty good at it, and really liked it. I used to show in three-gaited show pleasure classes, but now I show in academy classes. I like the academy classes the best, because my riders work so hard and are so awesome!

I highly recommend asking your instructor about your favorite lesson horse’s past. I bet he or she had a great show career before they started teaching riders like you how to ride! I have taught so many riders to…riders to…sorry, my hay is here! Gotta go! n

Morgan Horse, Go Figure!

We couldn’t imagine featuring any breed but Morgans this month, so we went to our archives and pulled this piece for a rerun. So once again, meet Figure, the Founding Father of the Morgan breed.

he Morgan horse traces it’s hooves back to 1788, when Justin Morgan came to Randolph, Vermont. Within a few years he owned a foal he named Figure.

Little did he know, Figure would be the founding father of the Morgan breed.

There is some debate on who was Figure’s sire, but many believe he was the son of True Briton crossed with a mare from Wildair. As Figure grew from foal to stud he developed a compact muscular body, with distinct fluidity when he moved. The villages and towns of Vermont and New England talked of his beauty and strength.

When Justin Morgan died, Figure was sold to successive owners, and spent the remainder of his life working on farms and hauling equipment. Although Figure died in 1821 after a kick from another horse went untreated, by then he had sired many foals and fillies,

The Morgan Horse reputation didn’t die with Figure, either.

In fact, Morgans were the horse of choice during the Civil War. Because of their loyalty, brute strength and ability to march for days, the Morgan Horse became a standard for the cavalry soldiers.

So, You Want to Be a Vet? Dr. Kathryn Miller took time out of her mobile veterinary practice to answer H&A’s questions about her decision to become a veterinarian. We think she’ll answer your questions, too.

Why did you decide to become a vet?

I always knew I wanted to work with animals. Growing up, I would get frustrated when something was going on with my horse that I didn’t understand. I was sure veterinary medicine was the path for me when my studies began to focus on subjects like Biology.

What is your least favorite part?

Delivering bad news is definitely one of the worst parts of my job. Horses get hurt, get sick, and get old, and sometimes I am the “bearer of bad news.” I always keep the horse’s best interests in mind as I aid the client in making decisions for their animal.

How long do you have to go to school to be a vet?

A Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine requires a bachelor’s degree, then an additional four years of vet school.

How hard is it to get accepted to veterinary school?

It is quite competitive. Good grades and extracurricular activities are essential. When I applied, the admission process consisted of an in-depth application and an interview. During the interview, the panel asked me some technical questions about animal health and some questions about myself.

How hard is the schoolwork?

It is difficult. Many subjects—like Virology, Toxicology, and Microbiology—you won’t have had 16

any experience with prior to vet school. I would study every night.

This often meant sacrificing my other favorite activities, like riding my horse!

What is your favorite part about your work?

I find the greatest joy in making a proper diagnosis, and being able to provide a solution to my client.

Then they can proceed with what is best for their horse.

How many hours a week do you usually work?

My work is fairly seasonal.

Spring and summer are busy and I work 50-plus hours a week. Things will slow down during the winter. When I am in an area I am always on call. Horses have a way of needing help at the most inconvenient times! This can be tough, but it is part of the job.

Do you like to work on your own horses?

I do. The very first horse I owned was a bay mare named Lizzy.

Lizzy was suffering from colic and needed surgery. She was “prepped” and we opened her abdominal cavity. This was the first time I performed a procedure called an “enterotomy:” I opened a portion of her intestine and

How to Beat the Homework Blues

E

Do you struggle with homework assignments? If you will keep these suggestions in mind, you will get your homework done with a lot less stress.

veryone talks about the importance of not getting behind on homework, but what can you do so that doesn’t happen to you? Here are some tips to make sure you don’t get behind on your homework ever again.

• Keep a homework agenda. Write down the day you get each assignment and the day it needs to be handed in. If there are instructions to the assignment (such as “story needs to be 1½ pages, single spaced,” or “do odd numbered problems on pages 122–123”) then write the instructions down, too.You can also list your other activities in your homework agenda so you will be able to plan around conflicts: if you have a horse show over the weekend with an important test in algebra and a big paper due in history on Monday and a school dance on Friday night, you will definitely want to start planning early.

• Always use any free time at the end of a class to do homework.

• Find a good place to do your homework that is free of distractions such as T.V., or a sibling playing video games next to you.

• If you don’t have much homework, it is best to stay put until it is all done. If you have lots to do, then take a break when you finish a part of it, like the algebra problems, or reading a chapter for a class. Keep the break short and sweet—play with your dog or cat, eat a snack—don’t do anything that will tempt you to extend your break (like texting, video games, or getting on the computer.)

• Always tackle the work that is due the earliest first: refer to your agenda!

• Give yourself some motivation as you go along: tell yourself “only 2 more problems to go; 4 more pages to read; 3 more translations…” you get the picture.

• Work at a steady pace; when you rush you will make mistakes. It is also a good idea to save a few minutes at the end to make sure you have completed all the work that was assigned. Lots of points are lost because part of an assignment gets overlooked!

• Last—but not least! Don’t forget to turn your homework in on time. n

‘judges’ continued from p. 7 in judging. It took me until I was in my 30s to feel I had enough experience and understood the criteria I would be judging under. I consider judging a great honor and responsibility.

Mr. Craghead: I think it is important to give back to the industry, so I have always tried to contribute in as many ways as possible. Judging is something I enjoy doing.

What do you like most about your job?

Ms. Mugnier: To watch a great performance when the horse and rider are in sync is so much fun.

Nothing beats marking the judge’s card when a wonderful performance can be rewarded with a top ribbon.

What is the hardest part of your job?

Mr. Craghead: A judge must be decisive with only a short amount of time to evaluate a class.

How do you stay neutral?

Ms. Mugnier: I start every class with a clean slate.

I learned early on that if I just watched the class unfold my card would almost mark itself. The horses and riders seem to fall into place: the great performance rises to the top, the good performance follows, and the placings end with the lesser performances of that day for that class.

Mr. Craghead: I don’t think there is time during a class not to be neutral. My goal is to select the best horses or riders within the specifications of the class.

What do you look for in a good equitation rider?

Ms. Mugnier: I look for a horseback rider who demonstrates horsemanship skills. I want to see a rider that understands the mechanics of the gaits, knows how to use that knowledge to prop-

erly aid their horse, and understands their form has a function.

Mr. Craghead: I like a technically correct rider who performs aggressively and with authority.

How do you pick the patterns you use, and what do you look for in a pattern?

Ms. Mugnier: I try to match the skill of the riders with the demands of the pattern. I never want to ask a group of riders to perform a test either above or below their skill level.

Mr. Craghead: Patterns are chosen depending on the age division of a class and the level of the riders at a given show.

Patterns should be challenging, but they are not memory tests.

group of particularly young lead liners, I asked one little girl “what color is your horse?” She answered “orange.” I responded that the horse she was riding was a bay, not orange. She quickly answered, “this is not my horse, my horse is orange.” I guess she told me!

Mr. Craghead: One year during the UPHA Senior Challenge Cup Final, part of the pattern was to canter a diagonal line through the center of the ring showing a simple change of leads. One rider, who subsequently won the class, showed superior horsemanship when it was clear that her horse did not want to step off on the correct lead. This rider was equally determined to get it right, patiently, quietly and effectively communicating what she wanted to her horse.

To me, that is what equitation is all about. n

Bones in the Graveyard (Use your own meringue recipe, if you prefer) 4 large egg whites, room temperature ½ cup granulated sugar

1 tsp. pure vanilla extract * * * 24 Oreos, crushed

Directions: Preheat oven to 200 degrees with the racks in the center of the oven. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, beat the egg whites at low speed for 1 minute, then increase the speed to medium-high for 2-3 minutes, or until the whites look foamy and very soft peaks begin to form. Lower the speed to medium and add the sugar a little at a time. Once incorporated, return the speed to medium-high and beat until stiff peaks form and the meringue is glossy, about 1-2 minutes longer. Add the vanilla extract and mix for 10 seconds to incorporate.

Place a medium size round tip in a pastry bag and fill the bag with meringue. Start at one end of a baking sheet, pipe two small circles of meringue right next to one another, then add a thin straight line 2 ½ inches long coming out of the center of the two circles, with two more small circles at the end of the line. You have

just made your first bone!

Continue making bones leaving 1” of space between each bone. Place the baking sheets in the oven and bake for 40 minutes to 1 hour. (Baking time depends on the temperature, humidity and altitude where you live. Start checking at 40 minutes.) Bones are done when they feel firm, with a slight “give” when you press on them. They will have a mere hint of brown color.

When done, turn the oven off but LEAVE THE BONES IN THE OVEN with the door slightly open for 1–1½ hours. While you wait for the bones to cool, crush the Oreos into “graveyard dirt” and spread around on a serving tray. When the bones are completely cool, peel them off the parchment paper and transfer them to the tray to serve. Be careful or you may end up with some broken bones. Appallingly amusing.

At the last possible moment, add the cola, the strawberries and, of course, the Floating Hand of Death (directions follow.)

Floating Hand of Death

In a measuring cup or jar, stir 1 or 2 drops of green food coloring into some water — not too much, just enough to give water a slightly decomposed tint. Pour the greenish water into a vinyl — NOT latex — rubber glove (the stretchy kind;

make sure it’s not powder-coated inside) and tie the top tightly. Put the hand of death in the freezer for several hours or overnight. At serving time, peel the glove off the hand and slide the icy hand into chilled punch. Divinely dreadful.

Fun Facts About Sacagawea v Sacagawea was born around 1788 into the Shoshone tribe, who was living in what is present-day Idaho. v She was kidnapped in 1800 by a war party of Hidatsa, and taken to their village near present-day Bismarck, North Dakota. v A few years later, Toussaint Charbonneau, a FrenchCanadian fur trapper, became her husband. The most likely records her death of a fever shortly after the birth of a daughter, Lisette, in 1812. v Eight months after Sacagawea’s death, Meriweather Clark adopted both Jean-Baptiste and Lisette.

Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, is considered to be one of the world’s first science fiction novels. It was published in 1818 when Mary was only 19 years old!

` Although the Monster is usually called Frankenstein, that name referred to the scientist who created ` him. The Monster himself wasn’t given a name.

The Monster of the book wasn’t green with bolts in his neck. He did have eyes, long black hair, a shriveled complexion, and ` yellowish straight black lips. Frankenstein’s Monster has been on two U.S. postage stamps: first in 1997 ` and again in 2002.

The 2006 book, The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived, ` included Dr. Frankenstein’s Monster on its list.

Have a training schedule for the horse. Be careful not to under- or overschool your horse at the show. At a long show, the first day or two are spent adjusting your horse to the new surroundings.

Many trainers opt to lunge the horse with a bitting rig, or long line on the first couple days.

From there, move into

driving or riding. Adjust what time you work your horse for your benefit.

Most trainers work horses early in the morning, usually from 5:30 until the first session begins.

In the afternoons you will see junior exhibitors and amateur riders getting lessons and quieter show horses working.

Horse shows are a great way to make new friends and meet people just like you. Everyone you are showing against has worked hard.

Take a few deep breaths, remember everything you’ve practiced, and have fun. Good luck! n

The Morgan horse has survived for over 200 years since the little foal Figure was born and cherished by Justin Mor-

gan. If you are ever in the Vermont area, stop by the town of Chelsea, to visit the grave of the father of the Morgan horse. This breed did much for the men in the Civil War and continues to be a staple on many farms throughout America. Go Figure: who knew what you had started! n

What suggestions do you have for a young person who wants to be a vet?

I strongly recommend contacting your local veterinarian and asking if you can shadow for a day. Veterinary medicine is not for everyone. There can be very tiresome days, and ones with some gore— you need to know if you are ready for this! Make an effort to be present when the vet is at your

farm or stable. Some of my greatest skills were obtained by watching other veterinarians.

Do you have any suggestions for a young person who wants to work with animals but isn’t sure being a vet is the way for her?

Explore as many opportunities as you can to help you decide your career path. Go to the zoo and ask the zookeeper about his or her job.

Ask your trainer, and the employee at the feed store. If you have a strong curiosity about some job, then check it out. Good luck! n
