hether you’re new to the show ring or a seasoned pro, you know show season is here!

Showing can be a lot of fun, and it will always be the best way to meet other equestrians. Here are some guidelines on the differences between the schooling and the recognized show circuits. It will be helpful if you can’t decide how you would like to start (or continue) your competition career.

Academy Shows

As with other sports, riding competitions have a range of levels. Most riders start out at the schooling shows, also known as “academy” shows.

Participating in these shows is a great way for you to develop show experience.

The requirements for academy shows are different from those in the recognized circuit. Think of an academy show as a lesson program that is

away from home. The classes usually have no more than six riders who may only show lesson horses. Each rider has the option of showing twice: once in a horsemanship or performance based class, and again in their equitation class.

Riders are entered into classes based on their age and their skill level.

Academy riders have the choice of entering a walk and trot class or a walk, trot and canter class. Keep in mind though, once you have chosen to show in the walk, trot and canter class, you can’t go back to the walk and trot class. Also, once you have shown at a recognized show, you won’t be allowed to compete in an academy show again. This helps to keep the playing field even.

Academy competitions can be used as either a final destination or as a stepping-stone on your competition career path.

If you’ve chosen to use

academy as a steppingstone, the next step for you may be the purchase of a show horse for the recognized shows!

Recognized Shows

Using the term “recognized” simply means the show is governed by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF).

The USEF assigns a rating of AA, A, B, or C to each event it “recognizes.” Shows with the AA rating are the most prestigious and offer the highest prize money. C rated shows are usually local shows, awarding less prize money.

Typically, recognized shows run from several days to a week in length.

Here’s to show days: early mornings, long days, late nights, truck rides, hotel rooms, learning patterns, warm-ups, sunburns, rope burns, countless hours of practice, taking the fall, bruised egos, determination… your show team, your trainer, your partners, the drama, hurrying up and waiting, show clothes, competition, missed classes, expectations, blue ribbons, laying down the perfect class… and most of all, our sport, RIDING. ~ Unknown

specialize in one aspect of horsemanship, either performance based classes or in the equitation ring. Riders will initially participate in a qualifying class, and from there can enter a championship class when their trainers say they are ready.

Recognized shows are also known as “breed”

shows. Most show riders purchase a specific breed of horse, and then move into showing at their breed’s shows.

The goal is to show at the World Championships for that breed at the end of the season.

your best. Remember to take in the event, and enjoy the occasion as well as the people you meet.

When the show is over, congratulate yourself for being there! And don’t ever forget to say “thank you” to those who helped you make it possible. n

If you are showing, you should always bring a Caboodle kit with you. Organize your Caboodle in a compartmentalized tackle box. Use this list and you will always be prepared!

Hair Hair brush and/or comb Hair spray Bobby pins (in a color matching your hair) Hair pins (in a color matching your hair) Hair elastics (covered rubber bands; the thicker ones are best) Hairnets, several packages Bun maker (made of nylon mesh, not foam; donut or oblong shaped)

Make-Up Mascara Eye shadow (no bright colors; neutral browns are best) Highlighting eye shadow (white or pale colors for contouring) Blush (no bright colors; pinks and peaches are best) Lipstick and lip gloss Foundation and/or powder (depends on age and complexion type; use sparingly) Small package of baby wipes (for cleaning face before applying show make up) Small box of good quality Q-tips

Horse Show Hair You will need: Hair brush Pony tail holders Hair nets Hair pins Bobby pins Large metal barrette Flip the ponytail up towards the top of your head and secure it with a large barrette just above the ponytail holder. This will make the basic bun shape.

Riders with fine hair should consider teasing the underside of the “bun.” This creates the volume needed for a nice show bun. Then brush the topside of the ponytail hair back down to form the top of your bun.

Roll the ponytail into a bun form keeping it oblong instead of round.

Double or triple a hairnet and place this over the “bun.”

Secure the bottom of the bun just underneath your ponytail holder with large bobby pins.

Use regular sized bobby pins to shape the remainder of the bun and secure it to your head. n

& Make-up You will need: Foundation Concealer Blush Lip gloss Mascara Eyeliner Highlighter eyeshadow Neutral eyeshadow Eyes: Apply highlighter or pale shadow lightly all over the lid from lash line to brow bone, then blend neutral eyeshadow color into crease. Apply eyeliner in even strokes along upper lash line moving from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eyes.

Take your mascara brush and wiggle it at the base of the lashes, then sweep though to the tips of lashes for an even application.

Face: Use fingertips for a cream foundation or a brush for powder. Blend a natural shade starting in the center of your face, forehead and and chin, blending outward as needed. Use your ring finger and pat a small amount of concealer as needed on spots. Apply a fresh, natural shade of blush to the apples of your cheeks, blending toward your temples. If you aren’t sure where your “apples” are, suck in your cheeks and make a “fish face.” The parts on top are the apples!

Now all you need is a swish of shiny lip-gloss and you are ready for the ring.

In Part 1 of this 4-part series, you will learn some simple exercises to do at home to help improve riding performance.

Two cues I want you to focus on are to “brace your stomach” and “keep your ribcage locked to your spine.”

To demonstrate the first cue, pretend like you are getting ready to take a punch to the stomach and tighten your abdominals. For the second cue, take your hand and place it on your chest.

Take a deep breath. Do

you feel your chest rise as you breath in and fall as you breath out? The position your chest was in after you exhaled is the position we want to maintain for the whole exercise, as you continue to breathe the entire time.

Perform 4-8 repetitions per side at a moderate pace for 2-3 sets. The key here is on movement quality not quantity.

Give this exercise a try, and start to enjoy your new-found stability in the saddle!

Best and Most Embarrassing Moments On a Horse Everyone has a day they won’t forget. Sometimes the memory is a great one, but others make you want to crawl under your bed. Here are some of our Editorial Board members’ most memorable moments on a horse...

Most Embarrassing Hallie At the Winter Tournament in January, my instructor made me say my ABCs out loud, and she said if I didn’t breathe I’d have to sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”! I felt like the crowd could hear me, so I only sang them when I rode by my instructor and the wall opposite of her.

Most Embarrassing Noah I tend to make a lot of noise (my family calls it “growling”) when I am really getting into riding at a show. It is embarrassing to watch the videos and hear how loud I am.

Most Embarrassing Ryenn I had been training all summer long. Even so, my horse had gone from hero to zero. We had not won a single blue ribbon all year. One day I went into an equitation class, sure there would be no pattern. But in the line up, the Judge started to talk about pattern. I was so freaked out I couldn’t even listen! He repeated it a couple times, but I was still so freaked I missed what he said. So I had to ask him to repeat the pattern again. Everyone looked at me, and instead of repeating the pattern, he repeated the rider numbers that were doing the pattern, and I was NOT one of those numbers. Waiting for My Hay...

Goldie tells readers what it’s like to go to a horse show.

oldie here, waiting for supper. Today is different, though; I’m waiting for my hay… at a horse show!

Although this is the first day of the show, preparations started weeks ago. I still had lots of hair from my winter coat, so my groom clipped me. That means she shaved off all of my hair – except for my mane and tail, of course!

(I would look ridiculous with no tail.) Once I got my haircut, I knew a show was coming up and boy, was I excited! I love horse shows.

My rider started coming to the barn more often right before the show. She practiced hard and spent a lot of time preparing her plan for today. Since she put in all that extra effort, I was ready to do my best for her. I am feeling good, because my trainer has me on a special schedule to get me tip-top for the show.

Yawn... Sorry, I’m sooo sleepy right now. Horse shows are exhausting! My day started before the sun even came up, when breakfast was served earlier than usual. Of course, being the experienced horse that I am, I knew that meant it was a Horse Show Day! After breakfast, my groom came in and cleaned me up, and made sure there wasn’t any stall bedding on my blankets. Next, she

took me out of my stall and loaded me in the horse trailer. I waited while the other horses were loaded, and then we were on our way!

The show was in town, so it wasn’t long before we got to the show grounds. My groom put me in a

stall, and it was a perfect spot to watch everyone running around.

There were people giving the horses fresh shavings, while others were cleaning tack or grooming the horses. There were lots of people putting riders’ hair in buns. Everyone was busy and you could feel the buzz in the air!

When it was my turn, my groom and rider came in to get me ready.

I got a good brushing, some hairspray on my mane, and my hooves painted a shiny black. Then they

put on my tack and took me into the warm-up ring. My trainer warmed me up, and then my rider got on. I could tell right off she was nervous, and to be honest that made me a little nervous, too.

But as we went around the warmup ring, she started feeling more confident, and that made me feel better. I pay very close attention to my rider and how she is feeling; I do best when she is riding strong.

Our class was called and we went in and worked hard. I picked my feet up high and was on my best behavior. My rider sat up tall, kept her heels down the whole time, and was on the correct diagonals, too. I was so proud of her!

It was a tough class with some stiff competition, so my rider and I were happy when we placed third. The instructor was pleased that my rider had performed so well, and that both of us tried hard.

When I got back to my stall, my groom gave me a good rubdown and my rider fed me peppermints and carrots. Yummy! Now I’m done with work for the day, and waiting for my supper. Since we show again tomorrow, I’m staying overnight at the show grounds. I hope it’s another great day.

I’m tired, but happy. Ooh, good, here comes my hay! n

Youth Academic Scholarship: Megan Metz, Prairie Village, KS The American Royal Association is a Kansas City area not-for-profit corporation that contributes approximately $1.7 million each year to support youth and education. The scholarships available in the American Royal Horse Shows are open to both local and out of town equestrians. While the criteria for each scholarship vary slightly, each requires the

recipient to be a participant in the horse show, to be active in school activities, and to participate in their community as a volunteer.

“The equine scholarships are given to riders who actively participate in our horse shows. The funds in most cases may be used for any type of higher education, including attendance at trade or specialty schools as well as universities,” said Stacy M. Maher, Manager of Equine Events for the

American Royal Association. “The selection committees also take into consideration the applicant’s level of involvement in extra-curricular activities, participation in equine activities, outside work experience and volunteerism. “ Information regarding the equestrian scholarships for 2012 will be available on the American Royal website in August. www.americanroyal. com. n

My instructor has a motto at the shows: Focus and Refocus. She helps us to visualize the feel of a good ride. This helps me to go into the ring feeling ready.

American Quarter Horses, as American as Apple Pie

The American Quarter Horse has had a rowdy ride from early Colonial times to the settling of the Wild West.

t seems that everyone loves Quarter Horses; their agility, good nature, and intelligence makes them popular everywhere. You may already know that the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) has the world’s largest registry, with over 3,700,000 horses registered worldwide.

But do you know how they got their start?

The American Quarter Horse breed developed back in the 1600s when early Colonials selectively cross bred the horses brought over from the Old World with those already here in the New World. During the workday, these horses had the strength and temperament to work on the farms and in the settlements, but on the weekends they provided the local entertainment. They became known in the Colonies as sprint racers, and horse races would be held down town streets and country roads. Betting on the outcomes was a popular activity, and valuable property was often lost as

After the Civil War came the rush to settle the West. At that time, money was hard to come by and cattle were everywhere.

It wasn’t long before the development of the open cattle range came along, and with that came the cowboys. The American Quarter Horse was par-

from Texas to Missouri and Kansas for shipment of the beef back east.

And when herding cattle was done for the day, the cowboys liked to practice their roping, cutting and other activities. This led to the rodeos of today, with American Quarter Horses front and center delighting spectators once again.

The love for American Quarter Horses continues strong among all age JUNE 2012

groups. This summer, the 2012 American Quarter Horse Youth World Cup will be held in Kreuth, Germany. This is an international equestrian event held every two years. It offers opportunities for youth riders to experience different cultures as they meet their peers from all over the world. Teams of riders from 17 countries will compete July 21-29 for the chance to win the gold for their country.

While at the Youth World Cup, five youth riders plus one coach and manager from each country get to take part in educational seminars, discipline clinics, leadership training, and of course, competition! To keep the playing field level, riders don’t bring their own horses. Teams compete in cutting, reining, horsemanship, western pleasure, trail, western riding, hunt seat equitation, hunter under saddle and showmanship.

Taking Care of My Senior Horse

T

You will learn the true meaning of loyalty, duty, and responsibility when you commit to the care of a horse. aking care of and properly feeding a horse is very important, especially if you have a senior horse like I do. If you do not feed them correctly they can colic, founder, or even die. Your horses depend on you, so you have to get it right.

I have three horses that are my responsibility: Buster, Zipper, and Shelbie. Buster is a senior horse and needs different care than the other two. He needs a lot of water in his food because he has dental problems and has lost some teeth. If I don’t add enough water to Buster’s food he can’t chew it.

After I water down his food, it weighs a lot! In the winter I have to bring it to the house while it soaks. It is very heavy to carry back to the barn. I feed Buster beet pulp, senior feed, and chopped hay. He can’t have long cut hay because he isn’t able to grind it down enough to swallow it. But I do give him free access to the pasture all year long, because he can eat grass.

special cookies for Buster out of applesauce, senior feed and oatmeal. We bake them just enough so they stick together. When they have cooled they are still soft and he can eat them.

Because Buster is an old horse, I can’t just give him a little bit of food, I have to give him a lot. If he doesn’t eat enough, he will get skinny and won’t have enough body fat to keep warm in the winter. He doesn’t like blankets, so it is important to keep that fat on him.

Buster also has arthritis in one of his front feet so he can’t run in games. He can still trot or even canter, but not for very long. Because of that I no longer show him. Arthritis can keep horses from running and having fun in the pasture and in the arena.

Senior horses like Buster still like to get attention, even if it’s just a good brushing and a cookie!

Don’t forget to do all those things with them that you did when they were younger. They deserve it. n

We try to practice harder patterns or jumps at home before shows. I know if I can do these at home, going to a horse show and competing at a lower level will be easier.

City Market The City Market is not just about fruit and veggies! You can eat, watch a magician, shop, get a cooking lesson, listen to music, eat (did we say that already?) and just get caught up in the spell.

hen you go to the City Market, you can feel the energy in the air as soon as you get out of your car. Everywhere you look people are having a good time, and you will be swept up in the excitement.

Walking through the center of the City Market is like being in the middle of a giant street fair; there

are crafts of every kind, baked goods, beautiful flowers, all kinds of food to eat, and many other items and activities. The busiest times to be there are on the weekends, but there is something to do every day of the week. You can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, and plants every single day. And while the City Market is known for its outdoor Farmers’ Market, that is just the beginning of what there is to do and see.

As you walk around, different street performers located all over the City Market will entertain you. Everything from musicians to magicians keep it lively, and you will find at least one person to make you a balloon flower or ani18

mal. In one corner of the City Market, there is a bounce-house and a blow-up slide. If your Photo courtesy City Market. little brother or sister needs a rest, they can even take a ride on a train made of barrels.

The City Market just buzzes with action and there is always something new and different to do. A recent addition is the Farm to Table Kitchen. In the Kitchen, you will find cooking classes and demonstrations. Harvesters and University of Missouri Extension will give demonstrations every Saturday starting in May, like “Get Your Sweet On” and “Groovalicious Fruit.” Yum yum!

They will teach you simple recipes and, if you are lucky, you might get a free sample!

On the subject of food, there are a lot of choices when lunch-

time rolls around. You may want to get adventurous and try something new. From pizza to Middle Eastern to burritos or barbeque: whatever you like, you can be sure there is a restaurant or a vendor at the City Market that has it.

Don’t let the rain keep you away, because there are lots of shops inside, and shelter for all of the vendors. There is also the Steamboat Arabia Museum, which contains artifacts from a steamboat that was found in the Missouri River after being buried for 132 years!

You can see the real paddle wheel and literally tons of actual items that were underwater. A visit to the Museum is a fascinating way to spend an afternoon.

Your whole family will enjoy a day at the City Market. If you want to feel like you are on vacation without having to pack your bags, head to the City Market; it is always entertaining! n

Finding a Summer Job During the summer you have more time on your hands than money in your pockets. Here are tips to help you find a job and get some jingle back in your giddyup.

S

ummer is here, and you want a summer job. Well, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve got tips on where to look and what to expect from a mix of summer jobs.

Start looking at places you’ll want to be every day. If you like being outside, look for neighborhood yard work and odd jobs. If you are a horse person, look for a job at your barn. Expect to be put to work shoveling out the stalls and taking care of horses. Remember, it’s called “work” for a reason!

Summertime means vacations, and your neighbors may hire you to watch their pets, water their plants, turn on the outside sprinklers, or take care of their lawns while they are gone.

Showing that you can take care of someone else’s property responsibly can lead to house sitting when you are older. Can you say “Kaaa-ching!”

If you’re not big on sweaty work outdoors, babysitting would be an alternative for you. Make sure parents know you have clear rules that you follow, and rules the kids you sit for must follow. Don’t be afraid to lay down the law. Parents want to know that you have things under control.

You could even help friends, relatives or neighbors with work you excel at doing. If you’re a whiz setting up electronics equipment, offer to help out family friends with their new purchases. The same goes if you are a Master of the Internet.

People who don’t know how to fix their own Internet predicaments will gladly pay you if you can make their headaches go away.

Just be sure you are ready to stand by your work.

Looking for a job can be stressful.

Don’t take rejections personally! As long as you are making a good impression, the obstacles you run into will have more to do with openings and timing than with you. Stay positive while you look, and keep an open mind, too. You may not find what you hoped for, but what you find may be just as good – or even better, if you give it a chance.

These are just a few suggestions for summer jobs. You can show your parents you are responsible, make lasting friendships, learn a ton and get ahead in finding a job for the school year.

Earning money is great, too!

So get out there and start looking for that summer job.

Most Embarrassing Macie Just last week I was riding Willy and I was circling, and I lost a stirrup. I didn’t have enough contact on my reins, and I thought we would run into the shavings pile!

I’m just glad I was holding on to Willy’s mane, and I didn’t fall off.

Best Lauren One of my best moments on a horse was the time when I was about eight. I was riding along on Roy, when he spooked and bucked me. I was young, skinny as a twig, and short to boot. I went flying out of that saddle! But instead of taking a painful fall I landed on my feet like a gymnast. I was even still holding the reins, so Roy stopped moving. This was the first time I fell, and so far it has been the last.

I’m pretty sure I could never do that again!

Most Embarrassing Sarah Everyone always hypes up a debut on a new horse. Jubilee Regional 2010 was supposed to be my debut on my English Pleasure horse we call Phil. I had a practice ride the day before and was told not to take Phil in the show ring before our class so it would be new to him. Little did we know what would happen the next night. Phil and I completed a short warm up, entered the ring and had an OK first way. When we reversed, I could tell Phil was very nervous. Phil did not want to walk, and I was trying very hard to keep him from stopping. When the canter was called, Phil spun into the middle of the arena and I could not get him out. We were stuck. The ringmaster tried to help, but eventually my mom had to come and literally pull us out of the arena. I was in tears. I have two great friends who helped me work Phil and get us back on track.

It took awhile, but now we can go into classes and I don’t worry about Phil darting into the middle. Working through this brought Phil and me closer, and now achieving a perfect class means even more. continued, see ‘best/most embarrassing,’ page 23

Last year I was in two horse shows.

It’s not being in the ring that makes me nervous — it’s the warm up.

My parents have signed me up to participate in a show pretty soon.

Can you give me some advice on how to know where I should be in the warm-up ring? I always feel like I’m in the way!

A. You are right; warm-up rings can get crazy! But while each type of riding has exceptions to warm-up ring etiquette, there are some basic rules to make it easier to know how to react to most situations you might encounter.

It would be nearly impossible to cover each scenario, so I’ve listed suggestions to help get you into the show ring without problems.

If the warm-up ring is quiet, start in the same way as the other horses.

Be aware of what is in front of you. This is the only way you’ll know where the other horses are, and if there is a situation coming up you’ll need to navigate around.

Always pass oncoming traffic left shoulder to left shoulder.

This means if you are tracking to the right, you will pull off of the rail and give it to the

Horses moving faster should pass to the inside of the ring.

Be careful not to pass inbetween a horse and the rail.

This might leave you trapped or even worse, headed straight into oncoming traffic.

More experienced riders need to keep an eye out for the beginners. Allow them to make mistakes without over-reacting. You were there once, too! Always give anyone who might be struggling some extra room. That is being a good sport.

If you’re not sure where a horse near you is headed, call out to its rider where you intend to go. Communicating with other exhibitors by using the words “rail” or “inside” to describe your location can help to avoid a problem.

Respect other riders and their horses. Each horse has its own personality. It’s impossible to know what another rider’s horse can tolerate. Be mindful not to do anything that might spook another horse.

Remember everyone has the same goal — to prepare for the show ring. Of course people will make mistakes! If you make one, apologize for it and continue warming up.

Warm-up arenas are not a place for new lessons. Practice skills you already know.

Both you and your horse need to feel prepared for the show ring.

Final touches to you or your horse should be made in the center of the ring. After all, riders in the class after yours need room to warm up, too.

The more often you show, the more comfortable you will get navigating around other riders.

You could even practice these moves in the lesson ring. If you follow these basic rules, you’ll always know where to go and how to trouble shoot in the warm-up ring. Good luck! n

Everything that could go wrong, did: the headlights on his beat-up station wagon would not work; and that, along with snow and a flat tire, caused him to miss the bidding. By the time he arrived, the only vehicle left in the lot belonged to the man who bought the unsold horses for use as dog food and glue.

There was something about one of those horses, a grey gelding, that drew Harry’s attention.

His knees were open wounds, his coat was caked with mud, his hooves were grown out and cracked, and he was missing a shoe. But his eyes carried a spark for living, and the horse seemed brave. Harry handed over $80 and took him home. His children named him Snowman.

· Breyer created its first horse in 1950, as a decoration for a mantel clock! The company was astonished to receive many requests for the horse without the clock, and rushed to fill those orders. That first horse was called #57 Western Horse, and was the start of the Breyer horse collection. · Each Breyer model horse begins as an artist’s clay sculpture. Each model is created and painted entirely by hand, and takes the skill of about 20 different people working together to make. · Sometimes a paint variation within a model will occur that is significant (and rare) enough to be considered very valuable compared to the regular model. The reasons for these rare variations are usually never known. · Fans of Breyer horses meet every year in Lexington, Kentucky for BreyerFest, the largest model horse collector and equine festival in the world! This year the theme celebrates the London Olympics, and runs from July 20-22.

An Interview With Shatto Milk Company We talked with Barb Shatto of Shatto Milk Company to see what is new down on the farm.

Most produce six to seven gallons of milk every day. Some of that gets turned into ice cream and flavored milk: the most popular flavored milk is chocolate, followed by strawberry and root beer. We even have cotton candy flavored milk!
