Fun Facts About Sandra Day O’Connor,
Retired Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States
v Her family owned and ran a 155,000-acre ranch in Arizona, where Sandra Day learned to ride horses, rope cattle, and repair fences alongside the cowboys. v Sandra graduated from high school when she was just 16 years old. She went to Stanford University for a bachelors and a law degree. v She completed the three year law program in only two years, ranking third in her graduating class. v Sandra Day dated a friend from law school whom she later married. Together they had three boys. v In Arizona in 1965, Mrs. O’Connor started a life of public service. In 1981, she was unanimously confirmed as the first woman associate justice to the Supreme Court of the United States. v Justice O’Connor was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum’s Hall of Fame in 2002. v Justice O’Connor has worked on two books. One is the memoir she and her brother H. Alan Day wrote together, titled Lazy B: Growing Up on a Cattle Ranch in the American West. The other is a children’s book she wrote called Chico, about her beloved first horse.
