KHS students viewing solar eclipse at maximum using NASA approved glasses provided by Mrs. Sinclair's Astronomy class. The next time these students will be able to view a solar eclipse in Oklahoma will be in the year 2024, when most of them will be in their early-20’s.

New FACS Teacher at KHS Beth Ireland joined the KHS Staff as the new Family and Consumer Science teacher this year. A native of Kansas, Miss Ireland made the move to Oklahoma to be with her fiance in Okeene. Previous to becoming a Yellow Jacket, our new FACS teacher taught for seven years in Eureka, Kansas. Before that, she worked as an Exension Educator for FACS and 4-H Youth development.

Growing up on a ranch in Yates Center, Kansas, Miss Ireland went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in FACS Education from Kansas State University, followed by a Master's in Career and Technical Education from Pittsburg State in Kansas.

Meet the Jackets

Softball

The majority of students that attend Kingfisher High School are involved in some sort of athletic activity. We have basketball, baseball, football, golf, wrestling, tennis, softball, soccer, swimming, cross country, track, and cheer.

Our softball team started out alright but as our season starts we all are learning how to communicate and work together. We are all now friends and that means a lot in softball.

Being close and working together just makes us an even better ball club. Team work is one of the main things you need in being on a sports team. Just being there and supporting our team makes us better because, knowing that our school supports us means a lot to us even when everyone thinks we aren’t good.

At Kingfisher, sports are very important to the students, and to everyone involved, including parents, teachers, and administrators. Monday night, everyone; teachers, athletes, trainers, coaches, parents, friends, and families came to recognize and support all of the Kingfisher athletes.

They announced everyone in their sport group by sport and by name. The sport with the most players was by far football, which play Marlow on Friday in our first game of the season. One of the greatest things about sport events is that everyone comes Our softball team is very good and it is together and supports their school athletes and everyone has a great time, regardless of going to continue getting better as we get the scoreboard. through the rest of our season. Back to School Opinion By: Jacob Conrady /kk I can’t fully express how much I missed getting up at seven in the morning every day. I missed stressing about homework and if I remembered to do it. Didn’t you? I missed all the long assignments that we all wait till the last minute to complete. I missed having to get checked out for lunch every day because we don’t have open campus lunch. I missed having freshman around to make everyone’s day so much better. I missed walking around the huge mud pile by the door that ruins my white shoes when it rains a drop?

With the exception of the classes I enjoy or the classes that don’t cram work down your throat 24/7. I missed hearing how lazy we all are because we forgot to do homework one night out of the month. How could you go without it? How didn’t you miss having to walk through the front door in the winter when you’re freezing and have to park in Okarche? These are thoughts I have on bad days. I don’t really mind it as much as I claim; I’m just typing anything that comes to mind. If you read this far and didn’t pick up any sarcasm, you’re a genius.

Game Review: Reigns

By Tyler Roman/cr The game Reigns is a mobile app available on IOS and Android, where you play as a king in a medieval kingdom. The game changes depending on the choices you make. You make choices by having two options presented to you and swiping left or right depending on what you choose. When you make decisions it affects your kingdom in four different ways: the church, the people, the army, or the treasury.

When any of them are too strong or too weak you lose and have to restart. There are many other factors in the game but that’s the base premise of it. In general the game is very easy to learn and the graphics are simple but charming. The game is addictive in that it’s fun to find all the different paths you can take as king and it throws different factors to keep you interested.

The only complaints I have is that it can get repetitive when you’ve played through it enough. Also it can get annoying when you’re forced to make a decision that will end your reign, other than that though it has kept me entertained.

So for its pricing of 2.99 it’s definitely worth it.

Vaping: Fad or Here to Stay Opinion By: Kat McConnell/kk Vaping is the new fad, or craze. Smoking has become banned in some towns and on the streets. Cigarettes have thousands of chemicals that can literally slowly kill you. Is vaping much better?

You hear advertisements on the radio saying you can trade your cigarette pack for a vape starter kit. Vaping has been said to be the healthier alternative. The levels of nicotine in cigarettes are 10x higher than the measurable amount of nicotine in ejuices.

Nearly six million people die from smoking every year.

With vaping there is no burning of tobacco, and there are only a few chemicals rather than the thousands of chemicals in cigarettes.

A Guide to Meditation

By Prairie Kaya/kk Meditation has been practiced for hundreds of years and has a broad array of definitions. When you think of meditation, images of a two hundred year old Chinese man with a long beard hovering above a candle or a religious practice may come to mind. However, despite what you may have been told, meditation does not necessarily have to be religious. In fact, many people consider it a very beneficial exercise completely separate from their spiritual beliefs.

Before we begin, here is what meditation does NOT have to involve: Paying a fee to have someone wave an object in front of you. (Unless you’re into that) Wearing special outfits Sitting in a funny, pain-inducing position.

Believing in any specific religions.

What meditation DOES involve: Partaking in a singular, simple, scientifically-proven exercise.

Relaxation.

The three beginning steps to meditation: Eyes closed and relaxed (although some forms of meditation involve softly eyeing the place directly in front of you) A straight back. This helps with breathing. (You can even lay down if you want to, so long as your back is straight.)

Notice your breath. Focus on the feeling of breathing in and out. (This may include noticing how your chest expands and retracts, or your nose moving.)

Now, of course when you start to relax yourself like this, your thoughts are going to start having a party. This is fine!

Even the most experienced meditators have this experience. Do not be afraid to be alone with yourself. All you have to do at this point is gently brush aside those thoughts and start over again, focusing on your breath.

Meditation is basically this cycle, starting over again every time you think a thought. It’s very important that you are gentle and kind with yourself. Failing is success here. Scientists have proven that when you practice this type of meditation (start over again, and again, and again) it’s like lifting weights for your brain. It even shows up on brain scans!

Meditation is like nothing else you do in your daily life.

Instead of walking around in a fog of, “What should I eat for lunch?” “Why did I say that stupid thing?” and “My shirt is uncomfortable,” you are simply focusing on the now. Trying and failing, and trying again.

If you are going to start meditating, most meditators would recommend starting at a basic time of five to ten minutes a day. Meditation has been shown to control stress, reduce anxiety, boost mood and immunity, and improve cardiovascular health. You can even relax easier when you have time to!

So the next time you have a spare few minutes, consider meditating. For so little investment, you a can improve your life so much!

Charlottesville Protests

E3 Made Me Happy, Angry

On Saturday August 12th counter protestors met white nationalists in Charlottesville Virginia at Lee Park where the Unite the Right event was about to take place. Conflict started hours before the rally was supposed to start and the police had to intervene.

E3 this year has brought a big bag of goodies for us gamers. I personally am really excited for the new game called “Ashen” for Xbox One, mainly due to the cartoonish art and Dark Souls feel.

There are so many games to look forward, new add-ons to games, and a big surprise that I never saw coming.

The Charlottesville City Council voted 3-2 to remove the statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. White nationalist groups such as the KKK were present and were a part of the protesting group. Tragedy struck when a car driven by James Alex Fields Jr. rammed into a group of protestors and killed Heather Heyer as well as injuring another 19 people. The suspect was arrested and is in police custody.

In my opinion the statue could’ve been left in the park but I understand the government’s point of view, the statue is a sign of rebellion and could be taken down. The death of Heather Heyer was another terrible incident that is becoming much too common these days. If you don’t believe that the police are there to help you should reconsider your standing point of view if the police had not been there to stop the fight it could have been much worse.

Heather could’ve been a best case scenario out of everything that happened.

One of my personal favorite games, Undertale, is coming to console. I heard this news and instantly freaked out. I had to find the price. I went on Amazon to search it up. I was too lazy to enter in “Xbox One” into the search, so I just clicked on the first one I saw. It was the regular edition for PS4. When I went to change what edition I wanted, my heart stopped.

There were two options. PS4 Special Edition and the one I selected. There was no Xbox One. I was so sad. In fact, I didn’t believe it. I searched it up on YouTube, Google, and dare I say it, Bing. I found nothing. I can’t say I’m disappointed in e3, but I’m disappointed in Toby Fox not working with Microsoft to get Undertale on Xbox One.

Rugby in Schools Opinion by: Michael Mastalka /kk Firstly, Rugby is a world famous sport originating from England soccer when William Webb Ellis had strongly disregarded the rules and grabbed the ball and ran with it. Most parents believe that rugby is too dangerous to allow their children to play. Rightfully so, there are NO pads or protection other than your mouth guard. This commonly results in people thinking that it is far too dangerous to have as a school sport, however, there may not be pads, but there is a main rule protecting from high tackles (Anything about the waste).

This means that the risks of huge meat heads slamming into you full force breaking your neck, is close to entirely avoided. In addition, not only is Rugby incredibly entertaining to watch, it is very fun to play.

Although according to researchers Rugby is too brutal to have in schools, however, if you have good coaches close to all injuries can be avoided by knowledge of how to properly tackle, ruck, etc. Lastly, Rugby really blends an American football feel and a soccer feel, which is what most students who play sports participate in.

The Life of a Weeaboo

By Reygan Martin/kk I may say something and I’m sorry if it sounds crass, but you get a lot of weird looks walking down these halls when you’re like me. I’m a “weeaboo,” which is a crude term for people who are ADDICTED to anime or anything Japanese. Between living in America or in Japan right now, I’d choose Japan...or at least be Japanese. I listen to more to J-pop and K-pop more than anything. I even speak Japanese and can sing along with my favorite types of music.

Still think I’m weird? My favorite K-pop artist has to be Psy. I love the song “gangam style” his very first one. I love how energetic he is when he dances. My favorite J-pop singer is Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, who is not only a singer but she is also a model. My favorite song of hers has to be “ kira kira killer” which literally means “ glitter glitter killer.” My best friend and I even have Japanese nick names. Hers is “Akuma Saura” and mine “Minori.”

Our favorite anime is “Naruto Shipunden.” My friend has a crush on Sasuke Uchiha, brother of Itachi, while I like Sasori-chan.

But if I had to pick my favorite American singer it would be Ke$ha, other than that it’s all Japanese. My friend I told you about says I look Japanese to her sometimes. She looks Asian even though she is Native-American. On the subject of kimonos, the traditional Japanese garment, her and I have worn a kimono before, but her being a tomboy, hated it! I LOVED it! It freaks my parents out that I speak in Japanese and sometimes sing in Japanese but they are happy I’m accepting of other cultures.

My cousin and I took a “Which Vocaliod Girl are you?” quiz. She got Gumi Megapiod and I got Hatsune Miku! If you don’t know what a vocaloid is, they are computer generated entertainers that are very popular in Asian countries. I love it when they have the holograms of Miku come out of the stage and sing and dance...it is actually like shes there! On YouTube all you have to search for “ Miku live” to see “her” perform. I’m weird but I really don’t care what others think of me. I have a guyt friend that joins me in being a weeaboo and the fandom for all things weeaboo online is huge and ever growing. My guy friends name is Jhon and he and I could name all kinds of anime we watch together.

So yes I am a weeaboo and so is he but we don’t care because its very important that you express yourself. But to any other anime lovers in this school I’ll leave you with this quote from the hit anime, Black Butler. “ Life isn’t sweet that’s why people want sweet things” – Undertaker

Lil Pump Opinion by Angelina Slaten/kk Today’s trending rapper is Lil Pump. Who is he? He was born in Miami, Florida. August 17, 2000. Turning 17 his next birthday.

Lil pump started as a Soundcloud rapper. His first release was named “Pump” Ft. Smokpurpp this was released March 2016. Since then it has had more than 9 million views. As he’s grown other rappers such as Lil Uzi Vert, Smokepurpp, etc., have given him shout outs making him more popular in the rapping business.

Lil pump is of Mexican descent. His pink and blonde dreads give him his distinct look, so does the 5 flaming skulls on his neck. Another thing that makes Lil pump, Lil pump is his famous phrase “ESKETIT” which the Urban Dictionary says it means “getting money” or “get lit” and his favorite “let’s get it”. He uses this word usually before a track begins. As for education, Lil Pump doesn’t have much of one.

Not being the brightest as a person, he was kicked out of school in the 9 th grade due to a petty fight.

What about his music? Well with how fast he’s growing, especially for how young he is I would say within the next year he’s going to be up there with some of the best rappers of 2017-2018.

My opinion, well I think he’s an okay rapper but definitely has a long way to go.

The Chinese Zodiac By: Maximillian Rayner/kk While you may have heard about this zodiac, and think you know all there is to the Chinese zodiac, but there actually is a little more to the zodiac than just the simple animal signs. In case you don’t know, the Chinese zodiac is known as Sheng Xiao and is based on a twelve year cycle. Each year is symbolized by a different animal, and who is born in the month has an animal sign as well.

The animal signs and recent years include: Rat (1996), Ox (1997), Tiger (1998), Rabbit (1999), Dragon (2000), Snake (2001), Horse (2002), Sheep (2003), Monkey (2004), Rooster (2005), Dog (2006), and Pig (2007), after this it repeats back to rat. There have been stories written about how these signs and their relationships with each other. If you choose to search up your sign different sites will tell you characteristics of people how fall under the sign and there connections with the others.

If you do choose to search up your year, you might want to put in your exact date if you were born in January or early February.

This is because the Chinese calendar is based on mathematics and their new year will last longer than ours, sometimes even going as far as mid-February. Yet, this is not all that the Chinese zodiac has. With the animal signs, they have elements to come with the signs. The elements go on a five year cycle and will not be repeated for sixty years. The elements include: Metal (also called gold), wood, water, fire, and earth. These have specific years based on the animal sign and changes until sixty years. While there may be even more thing about the Chinese zodiac, this is all I know. Have fun with your sign

Board of Education Report (Special Meeting)

The Kingfisher Board of Education met in special session on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 7PM with member Dana Golbek absent.

The Board immediately discussed bids for the re-roof project at the Gilmour Elementary School. The construction manager suggested the Board accept the bid of $828,000+ bid from Koontz Roofing as the “lowest and best bid.” This could require a contribution of about $68,000 from the district for “cosmetic” work which the Board is willing to do and the bid was accepted. This company has also done the high school building and would provide a single vendor should any problems arise.

The Board agreed to allow Kingfisher High School students to take science and math classes at the Chisholm Trail Technology Center and receive KHS credit on their transcript.

Superintendent Jason Sternberger reported a student population of 1518 and Board Members said many in the community did not realize the numbers had grown so much still thinking of the “old days” when the numbers were closer to 1200. They discussed the need for facilities or additions and said a committee needs to be formed which will look at long term plans.

Supt. Sternberger said the process should start with teachers to determine what the actual needs are and the Board agreed. He said meeting will be held soon with any teacher who wants to have an input invited to attend.

Mr. Sternberger said that within the next three years, many bonds that financed previous construction would be retired and it would be a good time to ask for new issues that would not raise takes by simply replacing the ones already in place.

The Board accepted the resignation of Information Technology Director Chris Harris and employed Mr. Sturm upon the recommendation of Board Member Mike Copeland. Mr. Sturm comes to the district from Edmond with a good deal of business world experience.

The Board also hired Martin Padilla as a Teacher’s Assistant. They then adjourned at 726PM.

Number five, DaxFlame; he was a vlogger who was socially awkward. He constantly talked about his girlfriend and his best friend.

Number four is Cyndago he was doing well but he disappeared and after five day his dad texted him and asked him how the channel and his dad got a call from a Los Angeles Hospital. They said he had tried to kill himself but he was just in critical condition.

Number three, Lisa Nova is a youtuber with over five hundred thousand subs and 110 million views.

Most of her video are comedies. Her last upload was back in 2014 the video was called “My Body is a Temple”.

Number two, Ross Creations, is probably the original prank channel. He has almost five hundred thousand subs. His last video was over two years ago. Some people think that he died because of his last video; some believe that he was put into jail after posting all the videos of his committing crimes and some believe he just quit.

Number one is Fps Russia, a popular YouTube channel. His video consisted of gun and explosions. He has six million subs.
