ith traditions rooted in maritime activities, the UAE has always been in close contact with water bodies. It is no wonder that the country continues to maintain its foothold. The UAE is strategically located at the crossroad of trade and business, and this has initiated a number of developments exclusively dedicated to the mode. In order to regulate the flow of industry, a specialised non-profit trade and industry council, the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries, is created to promote the interests of the industry in Dubai and the UAE. It aims to maintain a safe and booming maritime environment that eventually contributes to enhancing Dubai’s position as one of the leading maritime points. Recently, members of the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI) held a meeting to lay down guidelines on the broad framework for future operations. Besides that, issues of concern surrounding the industry as well as the need to for-

tify foundations for better networking opportunities between industry partners were among the topics of discussion. “We have achieved a major milestone in initiating the Council’s operations. All members have tremendous expertise and experience in their respective fields and we aim to obtain a knowledgeable collective and cohesive take on imminent issues and present a strong industry voice at relevant platforms,” said Khamis Juma Buamim, Chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World. Drydocks World and Maritime World spearheaded the formation of DCMMI for the industry. He further added: “The Council will address pertinent issues related to the expansion of the network in terms of widening the membership. It will strive to support government initiatives for the industry and local and international laws and regulations related to the marine industry. It is also committed to working with an environment conscience and in promoting green industries that will direct the future of shipping.” Over 55 organisations comprising international and local companies specialising in the maritime sector have set up base in Dubai

Maritime City (DMC), a cluster dedicated to boost maritime-related activities in the Middle East. The venue houses industrial, commercial and trading companies, and offers options ranging from small and large workshops and warehouses to ship repair plots and shops. Speaking about the establishment, Khamis Juma Buamim,

Chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World said: “We have changed the concept of business and development plans for the city to re-engineer a model of an active futuristic city. There has been large- scale interest in the Dubai Maritime City, because of its proximity to the trading and commercial hub within the emirate of Dubai. The city is ideally located at an exceedingly busy trading route and provides innumerable opportunities for business and trade. The region has survived the economic shocks that are rattling countries elsewhere and is widely known for its resilience and ability to overcome adversities due to strong business and economic fundamentals. This is the primary reason that there has been an ever-

growing list of local and international companies lining up to set up base at the city. We have had a growing number of ship owners who are faithfully utilising the state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities that are on offer.” Similarly, one of the biggest industrial zones in the country, the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) by the Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), features a master plan that keeps in line with Abu Dhabi’s vision 2030 to promote industrial diversification. The location strives to become an important hub for various sectors with focus on manufacturing, logistics and trade. The council strives to facilitate operations that benefit the sector. —farhana@khaleejtimes.com

Reliability at sea When the doors opened on Middle East Workboats back in 2008, the industry welcomed the event as the 'must attend' exhibition and conference on the global workboats calendar. Four years later, the market has continued to thrive and grow and it would be wrong as event organisers and maritime experts for us to not include the

burgeoning offshore marine market. Consequently, we have chosen to embrace change and Middle East Workboats has been rebranded as Seatrade Middle East Workboats & Offshore Marine. Seatrade Middle East Workboats

& Offshore Marine will continue to offer a platform untapped in the global marketplace – an event which brings together decision makers and buyers from a geographic marketplace that includes the mighty African Continent, the growing Caspian Sea area, the Indian Subcontinent and Middle East.

YANMAR demonstrates a legacy embedded in marine engines In 2012, YANMAR celebrated 100 years of manufacturing history. Starting off in Japan as an engine workshop, YANMAR eventually developed the world’s first commercially viable small diesel engine in 1933. YANMAR’s design philosophy of “more power and less weight” has earned the Japanese engine manufacturer a reputation as one of the most reliable marine engines for leisure and commercial use as ships, yachts and marine applications around the world consider engine reliability a key factor in their operations. Yanmar manufactures marine engines for pleasure boat use from 15 hp to 530 hp, marine transmissions and drives, and commercial engines from 39 hp to 1,822 hp. These engines are designed for high performance and maximum engine life, and tested under extreme conditions to assure the legendary YANMAR reliability. Yanmar backs them up with a superior engine warranty and world-class support from FAMCO, a regional distributor. YANMAR’s engine drive sys-

tems and accessories can be used on most types of boats, from runabouts to sailboats, and from cruisers to mega yachts. In marine leisure boating, the worldwide reputation of YANMAR is second to none, and is regarded as the engine of choice when on water. FAMCO’s history with YANMAR marine engines goes back 45 years when trading on sea was essential to Dubai’s economy. With the maturing of the maritime industry, FAMCO’s marine expertise and consultative approach has seen YANMAR engines power a variety of maritime applications — from luxury yachts, coast guard, navy, tug boats, oil tankers, commercial vessels to dhows and ferries. The YANMAR 12AY Engine The Yanmar 12AY engine is set to power the commercial marine industry in a big way — the 40-litre, 48 valve, V-12 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine comes in five power ratings from 1199-1822mhp across three models. All models offer excep-

tional performance, low fuel consumption and low emissions. A key element of the improved performance and efficiency of the 12AY Series is the use of a new staggered injection nozzle and patented combustion chamber design named ASSIGN, which allows for a very wide rpm range that delivers outstandingly low fuel consumption. The new cylinder block design offers improved rigidity when compared to previous models, while a mechanical engine governor control and Yanmar’s own fuel system components further enhance reliability. With an absence of electronics on board, the simplicity of the 12AY Series has been a major decision making factor for many commercial operators. The design of the 12AY Series also means simplicity when maintenance or overhaul is required. Cylinder block inspection ports provide easy access to the connecting rod assemblies without the need to remove the engine oil pan or to lift the engine from the mounting foundation.
