Inspired by the Art Nouveau movement in early 20th century France, the restaurant name pays homage to Hector Guimard’s train station signs, titled “Metropolitain.” Metropolitan means “of a big city” so the name encompasses both the location of central Dallas, while the French spelling allows guests to quickly assume what type of food will be served as well as the environment that will be presented. The restaurant’s interior design will also include inspiration from the movement, with a more modern take. The goal of our restaurant is to create an intriguing and comfortable environment for the guests to socialize and dine. To achieve this, optimal lighting levels will be implemented in each space to set different emotions and experiences. Studies have found purposefully designing in light layers can influence guests’ comfort and satisfaction rates. Lighting also emphasizes and creates interest in featured areas. (Ciani, 2010).

Next, comfortable seating that considers materials and ergonomics will be included. It is found that the overall well-being of a customer can be heavily influenced by the seating design and materials used. Additionally, enjoyable seating leads to guests staying longer and spending more money (Hwang & Yoon, 2009). Finally, various visual and acoustical barriers will be implemented to separate tables and provide privacy to guests. Research indicates that tables in more private locations of a restaurant tend to have higher satisfaction rates and help customers feel more relaxed (Pijls et al., 2019).
