Fall 2021

The si te is located just outside downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, surrounded by the Great Lakes and National Forests. The space was designed for an older man with Alzheimer's and increasing issues with mobility, and his daughter, who doubles as his caretaker. Consideration of both clients' needs was noted and incorporated into the design. The main focus was to accommodate the father's immediate medical and physical needs while giving the daughter a space that feels like hers.

The conceptual framework of this design utilizes Gestalt theory and Universal Design (UD).

UD is seen through widened pathways, sliding doors, non-slip flooring, and comfort-height appliances.

There is an abundance of natural light and access to views from almost any room, helping to improve cognition and mental health.

Gestalt theory involves the location of rooms allowing the brain to fall into a routine so as not to cause confusion and distress. The kitchen has floating shelves and glass door cabinetry for easy access and viewing abilities.
