Lookingglass Theatre Company proudly announces the second extension of its popular smash-hit, family-friendly production, Lookingglass Alice. Adapted from the writing of Lewis Carroll by ensemble member and artistic director, David Catlin, Lookingglass Alice continues to defy the laws of gravity and rules of logic in this acrobatic and playful adaptation.

Produced in association with The Actor’s Gymnasium, Alice falls, floats, flies during her wonderland journey through the looking glass to become queen.

With a juggling Mad Hatter, a precariously balancing Humpty Dumpty, and a bumbling Knight who invents his way into Alice’s heart, Lookingglass Alice revisits the stories that inspired the founding of Lookingglass Theatre Company 20 years ago.

A show for all ages, “Lookingglass Alice is an amazing collaboration between inventive design, impossible physical performance and entirely unexpected storytelling. Even during the busy summer season, Chicago’s lakefront is often a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Despite the hordes of joggers, bikers and sightseers, the sheer mileage of the shoreline ensures that there will usually be a quiet little nook where one can lay back, soak in the rays and listen to nothing more than the lapping waves or a laughing child.

One exception to this idyllic scenario arrives this weekend, however, as anywhere BUT the lakefront will surely be a better choice for peace and quiet. Because as sure as mid-August signals the heart of the dog days of summer, it also means it’s time once again to welcome more than two million visitors to the lip of Lake Michigan to stare out at the water and sky as the cacophony of the 52nd Annual Chicago Air and Water Show unfolds on August 14 and 15. Centered mainly at the jam-packed North Avenue Beach, where the afternoon throngs often cover every available inch of sand, the steady stream of aircraft is hard to miss (or hear) from almost any spot up and down the shoreline.

Both days start on the water at 11am with a variety of waterskiing exhibitions and marine search-and-rescue demonstrations. Then all eyes turn to the skies as round after round of civilian and military planes are put through their roaring, spiraling, acrobatic and death-defying paces throughout the afternoon until around 4pm. Highlights once again will include fan favorites like the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the iconic U.S. Navy Blue Angels. For a complete schedule of performing acts, call 312/744-3315.

Of course, claiming a patch of beach on Saturday or Sunday is but one way to take in all of the waterborne and aerial action this weekend. Plan accordingly, and you can find great sightlines all around the city from land, sea, and sky.

Each summer, Indian and Pakistani visitors and residents alike come together to celebrate India’s Independence Day with a festive parade of floats in Chicago’s Roger’s Park neighborhood. The sounds of the Indian National Anthem echo a sense of unity as well as a sweet reminder of home. This year’s parade steps off at noon on August 15th and travels down Devon Avenue from Western to California. Everyone is invited to take part in this lively celebration. After the parade, we recommend heading downtown for an authentic taste of India at one of Chicago’s popular area restaurants.

For a modern take on Indian cuisine, visit Veerasway in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. This modern dining experience blends Indian food with American culture, featuring fresh and light decor with large steel Indian lanterns.
