Keystone Institute India: Satisfaction Report -September 2024

A major component of the work of Keystone Institute India is the national training institute for community and inclusion. We have, in our 9 years of operation, conducted over 380 events reaching over 12,042 people via over 69,865 participant hours.

One way, but of course not the only way, we can measure the effectiveness of the national-level educational events we provide across the country is to collect consistent feedback about the events. Since our inception, we have done so, paying close attention to specific recommendations, general trends, and quantitative measures.

Participant feedback surveys are conducted after each Keystone Institute India event, either completed immediately after the event by participants, or a link is mailed, depending upon the literacy levels, language, or technological competencies of the group. This means we have a lot of data, which is only useful when it is analyzed and put to use to guide us.

A unique practice in transparency is that we always send the collated feedback with analysis from each individual workshop back to each participant. We find this is greatly appreciated, and that participants want to know what others thought about the event.

Using Satisfaction Data to Inform our Decisions

Because we have held 5 sessions of the seminal course “Valued Lives: An Introduction to Social Role Valorization”, in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2024, we will focus this current report on these 5 events. These are the most resource-intensive events that we offer, bringing selected applicants from across India for 4 days of focused theory and hard work. Because of the intensity of resources applied to these events, we study the satisfaction levels of these events, and their impact, with care. The courses themselves are foundational to our work, are quite costly, and drive the power behind the All-India SRV Leadership Alliance, which we founded and facilitate. Figure 1 below illustrates the satisfaction data for the same event offered five times over eight years. Our vigilance led us to note lower, (but still very high) satisfaction levels in our 2022 event, SRV 4.0. Our primary hypothesis was that, with 62 applicants accepted into the 2022 event, the management of the participants took a good bit of faculty management, and perhaps impacted the satisfaction levels. Our other hypothesis was that we used fewer out-of-country trainers in 2022, and that could have impacted the satisfaction in a negative way. There is often significant bias in favor of trainers from foreign countries in terms of value in the minds of Indian professional and family members

Satisfaction in Intensive SRV Courses over 5 Events

Our hypothesis about the possibly unwieldy group size was put to the test in 2024. This drove our decision to lower the number of participants accepted into our 2024 SRV 5.0 course from 64 (in 2022) to 42 (in 2024). We believe from our own teaching experience that this made for better learning and deeper engagement for everyone. Our satisfaction surveys in 2024 bumped up noticeably in every category that we measure, so we believe we learned a valuable lesson about group size for intensive events. Unfortunately, we inadvertently left out the question regarding “Had a Powerful Impact” in the 2024 event survey but believe that number would have been close to 100% satisfaction. The complete feedback can be seen here for anyone interested.

In fact, we used even more in-country Indian faculty than ever before in 2024, showing that the use of nearly all Indian faculty rather than foreigners did not impact satisfaction as we had worried. One can see the in-country leadership development brought to life consistently over the five workshops over eight years.

These quotations from participants, as well as many, many others documented on the feedback form, or sent to us directly, reflect perhaps unquantifiable testimony to the powerful ideas we teach across India. We hope this report has been illuminating in how we try to use the data we collect on satisfaction to drive decisions and test our perceptions. There are many other

areas of satisfaction we can report on, well beyond satisfaction with our training events individually or as a whole, as well as in our measurement of life satisfaction in the lives of people who have left institutions because of our work. We will leave this for future reports. .
