Despite the difficulties we face, enrollment actually grew slightly this fall, due primarily to an increase in transfer and non-traditional students. Our freshmen enrollment and residential population declined as a result of COVID-19. In general, the pandemic has imposed a significant financial burden on Keystone, just as it has on many other colleges and universities.

Dear Friends of Keystone: As we enter the homestretch of the 2020 fall semester, it’s certainly accurate to say this has been an unprecedented time in Keystone’s history.

Like other colleges and universities nationwide, as well as virtually every other business and non-profit organization, Keystone has dealt with the emotional, educational, and financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a daily basis.

As I write this, we have been spared the devastating impact of mass COVID-19 outbreaks that many other schools across the nation have had to endure.

Unfortunately, there have been some positive cases among our college community. To those individuals, we offer our continued support as we deal with the impact of this awful disease. Our relatively low case count at this time is largely the result of the extraordinary efforts of our students, faculty, and staff, as they have taken the necessary steps to protect themselves and each other during this critical time.

Despite the COVID-19 challenges, it is important to realize that, in the true Keystone spirit, we continue to forge ahead with our plans and goals. As you may know, during the last few years our goals as an institution have included the diversification and alignment of our educational programming to provide even more relevant degrees and meaningful career pathways for our students.

Such an experience combines the disciplines of both art and science, and provides valuable real-world experience for our students.

On another front, our Keystone College Professional Development Institute has created a variety of new professional development and certificate programs for working adults. These skill-building courses not only benefit our local workforce, but also create new and diverse sources of enrollment for Keystone.

These are just two important examples of how Keystone continues, and will continue, to accomplish its goals in the months and years ahead. Of course, we know there will always be challenges, financial and otherwise. But obstacles have never deterred the proud Keystonians who came before us, and they will certainly not deter us now. We face the future, and all that it holds, with vigor and optimism.

As always, we thank you for all that you have done in supporting us in the past. We also ask that you support us with your gifts in this great journey which lies ahead.

If we have not ourselves contracted the virus, many of us know a friend or family member who has suffered and perhaps perished.

Most businesses, large and small, have been affected in some way.

Many have laid off or furloughed numerous employees; and sadly, many have closed.

Dear Friends of Keystone: Each year in our annual donor report, we summarize Keystone College’s financial status; and make a sincere request for your ongoing and continued support.

We are doing so again this year.

I am sure you realize 2020 is like no other year that Keystone, our nation, or the rest of the world has experienced. COVID-19 has impacted virtually every aspect of our personal, professional, and financial lives.

Institutions of higher education have been particularly hard hit. Many universities have had hundreds of positive tests among students, faculty, and staff. Keystone has been relatively fortunate in that regard, as we have had only a small number of cases.

That does not mean the financial impact has not been felt in a most significant way. Our small increase in overall enrollment was good news. But the virus’ impact of reduced freshmen enrollment, decreased resident hall occupancy and resources allocated on health and safety protocols has certainly been an unexpected and significant financial burden.

As we appeal once again for all alumni and friends to support Keystone, we are doing so in much different circumstances. The pandemic has likely placed its own stress on your personal and professional lives. I also realize the tremendous impact this College has had on the lives of proud Keystonians and the critical role it has played in our community. Our current students, and those who will attend Keystone in years to come, deserve the same educational, career, and life experiences that have benefited so many others before them.

I ask that you continue to support this amazing place. With your help, Keystone can not only survive but thrive for the next 150 years and beyond. Thank you for all you do, and will continue to do, for Keystone College.

John H. Harris Society, 10 Consecutive Years of Giving In 1868, Keystone Academy was founded by a group a visionaries who wanted the youth in their community to have access to an education and a promising future. In order to construct the first building, they scouted the 21 acres of land and selected the highest point, cutting through briars to reach the rocky knoll. For the next two years, members of the community came together to help with the construction and bring the vison into reality, until the building, now known as Harris Hall was completed in 1870.

This society, named after John H. Harris, who was a founder, benefactor and first President of Keystone College appropriately reflects the steadfast commitment and the unwavering loyalty to our mission that our consecutive donors represent. We can never achieve alone, what we can together. The donations that you have made have served as the foundation for the future, and together you have built it brick, by brick.

The steadfast commitment of these donors is remarkable and much appreciated.
