Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “luck is tenacity of purpose.” After a little more than six months serving as Keystone’s interim president, I have never been more confident in our future than I am today.

As a Keystone alumnus, Board member, and former Board Chair, I was already familiar with the excellent quality of our educational programs that have transformed the lives of thousands of Keystone students since its founding more than 150 years ago. I was also well aware of the great faculty and staff who have so ably served the College over the years. I must tell you, however, that after being on campus every day for the last six months, those impressions of excellence have increased exponentially.

Every day, I meet talented faculty members who not only care deeply about their students but go above and beyond expectations to ensure they achieve their maximum potential. That fact is borne out by the professional and educational accomplishments that our graduates attain with each passing year. I also encounter members of our staff who work especially hard to ensure that the student experience at Keystone is the best it can possibly be. Most importantly, I see our students striving to excel in the classroom and in their numerous activities, athletic endeavors, and off-campus internships. I am so impressed and so proud of all of them.

While I am excited by the present, I am equally optimistic about the future, despite the widely publicized headwinds confronting higher education. Keystone, like other colleges in our region and around the nation, is dealing with a steady decline in the high school student population, which continues to drive down college enrollments. Enrollment instability during the COVID years added further to this trend. There are also significant concerns over affordability and student debt, along with an ongoing debate that is questioning the value of a college education to enter the workforce. While these are difficult challenges, we are not standing still. Instead, we have gone on the offensive to broaden the base of learners beyond the traditional high school cohort and focus on our differentiable strengths to increase enrollment. This takes commitment and support.

Every day, we become more innovative and resourceful. On the academic side, we have expanded our undergraduate portfolio with new baccalaureate programs in Data Analytics, eSports and Gaming Management, Financial Planning, Public Administration, Public Relations, Supply Chain Management, and Health Sciences. Additions to our graduate programs include Wildlife Biology and an accelerated 3+1 program in Accountancy designed to get students into the workplace more quickly. We are also adding a master’s in Mental Health Counseling to address the rapidly increasing demand in this field. These degree-based programs are also augmented by expanded certificate-based offerings through our growing Professional Development Institute, including Medical Billing and Coding and Health and Human Services, as we reach out to more working adults seeking to advance their careers or start new ones. We are also ramping up efforts to increase our veterans’ presence on campus by partnering with numerous military, community, and governmental organizations with direct connections to those men and women who have so nobly served our country.

These are only selected highlights. There is much more to our story as you will learn in the coming months. For now, please know that Keystone is on the move as we build on the great tradition that has been established by our outstanding alumni and great friends of the College. We are incredibly grateful for your extraordinary support for Keystone. The achievements that the College has realized over the years are because of your steadfast commitment, your inspiring engagement, and your belief in the quality of the education provided to Keystone students. We hope you will continue to support us as we move forward. As true Keystonians, I am sure you will continue that proud tradition.

JOHN H. HARRIS SOCIETY 10 CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF GIVING

In 1868, Keystone Academy was founded by a group of visionaries who wanted the youth in their community to have access to an education and a promising future. In order to construct the first building, they scouted the 21 acres of land and selected the highest point, cutting through briars to reach the rocky knoll. For the next two years, members of the community came together to help with the construction and bring the vision into reality, until the building, now known as Harris Hall was completed in 1870. This society, named after John H. Harris, who was a founder, benefactor and first President of Keystone College appropriately reflects the steadfast commitment and the unwavering loyalty to our mission that our consecutive donors represent. We can never achieve alone, what we can together. The donations that you have made have served as the foundation for the future, and together you have built it brick, by brick.
