For most small business owners, solar is a great idea because you’re going to save a lot of money.”
Grant, Business owner
Solar powering your morning cup of coffee
“There is no planet B,” says Chris. “One thing we have done as a business is try and offset our energy use by putting solar panels on, and to try and be as sustainable as we can.”
Chris says, installing solar PV on the building housing Selvatica has had a positive impact on the small business’s bottom line.
Selvatica is a family owned coffee roastery in Coburg in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Co-owned by Chris, her husband Seb and her coffee-roaster brother-in-law Mauro, Selvatica aims to be as sustainable as possible.
“I’ve run hospitality businesses in the past and just seen a lot of the profit go in electricity bills. Now with solar on the building it’s just so much easier to do business because there aren’t the massive overheads, and we just don’t have that massive commitment every month of a huge electricity bill. I think we’ve paid about $150 odd for the first four months of the year in electricity bills which is pretty great and the solar covers the rest of it,” she says.
Solar is ‘cheaper by miles’
Cheaper Buy Miles provides discounted food and supermarket goods at three locations in Melbourne’s western suburbs, and its latest Footscray shop has solar PV installed using a Solar for Business rebate. Owner Grant Miles said the cost of the installation was around $10,500, after receiving the Solar Victoria rebate.

With the shop using most electricity during the day, when the panels are generating at the highest level, he estimates that the energy saving it provides means the installation will have paid for itself in around two and a half years.
Like many small businesses, Selvatica rents the premises they operate from so Chris needed her rental providers permission before going ahead and installing the solar PV system.

“It was pretty easy speaking with the landlord. We said can we put solar panels on your building and they said yes by all means upgrade our infrastructure! It was not a difficult conversation at all and we’ve got a 20-year lease so we know that we’ll more than pay off the solar panels in the time,” she says.
“Just do it,” she says when asked what her advice would be for other small businesses considering installing solar.
I always say that installing solar is like that old Chinese proverb, ‘the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now!”
Find out how these Solar Victoria customers are saving big on their business electricity bills with solar!
Do it for the planet, do it for your community do it because it’s the right thing to do and because you’re going to save outrageous amounts of money!”

With technology what it is today, it’s inevitable that we’ve all experienced those unfortunate times when our connectivity was lost for a period of time - typically always at the worst possible moment: perhaps your payroll was due - or a major tender was about to close. At some stage, all internet services can experience downtime or degraded speeds.

Additionally, it’s crucial to assess the market to determine if there is an alternative type of connection available to your property. Switching over to a fibre connection (if available) offers far greater levels of stability than services still running over sections of the old copper network, or utilising wireless technology.

Protect your brand with these tips for small business
A strong brand helps a small business to establish its identity and stand out from competitors. One way to protect your brand is with a registered trade mark.
A registered trade mark legally protects your unique brand, and helps customers distinguish your products or services from other businesses in the market.
Understand how a trade mark can support your business’ success, and follow these tips before you apply for one:
Tip #1: Understand the difference between a business name, trade mark and domain name
As you establish your business, you may be thinking about registering a business or company name, domain name and/or a trade mark. It’s common for these to be the same, or similar for a business, but each of these require different registrations.
A business name is the name your business trades under.
A registered trade mark legally protects your brand, products or services. There are different types of trade marks available to suit your business. Search your word or image trade mark with IP Australia’s free TM Checker tool.
A domain name is a registered internet address. https://www.auda.org.au/
Tip #2: Search to check your brand name or logo isn’t already being used
Before finalising your brand name or logo, do a thorough search across registered trade marks, business name check, domain name registrations and the internet. Doing your research ensures your chosen name is available and will help you avoid conflicts and potential legal disputes down the track.
Tip #3: Secure your brand
• Apply for a business name and key business registrations through theBusiness Registration Service
• Use IP Australia’s free pilot tool TM Checker to check the availability of your trade mark and apply.
• Register your domain name through a registrar or reseller listed on the .au Domain Administration Ltd (.auDA) website.
Tip #4: Monitor and enforce your trade mark
Registering your trade mark is a key step in protecting your brand. Regularly monitor for unauthorised use of your brand. If you encounter any infringement, you can take action to protect your rights. IP Australia has more information about how to determine if your IP is being infringed, and what you can do to stop it.
Check your trade mark with TM Checker
TM Checker is a free AI-assisted trade mark tool created by IP Australia to make it easier for businesses to check the availability of a trade mark. You can use the pilot tool to check the potential registrability of a trade mark and complete the application process in minutes. www.ipaustralia.gov.au

Tourism industry forecasted to return to pre-pandemic spending in 2023
Australia’s visitor economy is forecast to bounce back to pre-pandemic expenditure this year, and grow to $227.7 billion by 2027, according to new forecasts out today.

In very welcome news for the sector, this year’s annual Tourism Forecasts for Australia project a brighter future for the visitor economy from now until 2027.
International tourism will continue its recovery, with international visitor expenditure to exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2024, and visitor arrivals to top pre-pandemic arrivals by 2025.
This year, nearly 3.5 million international visitors are forecast to arrive in Australia, rising to 9.5 million in 2025 and 11 million in 2027.
By 2027, New Zealand Europe, the US, UK and India are projected be among our leading sources of international visitors, with China also expected to return to prominence over the forecast period.
Overseas holidays are also back on the cards for Australians, forecast to rise from 6 million departures for Australian residents in 2022 to 13.4 million in 2027, enabling us to reunite with family, pursue business opportunities, and engage with other cultures.

THE FUTURE OF NOVATED LEASING IS ELECTRIC

With the Australian Government’s new National Electric Vehicle Strategy, a new era for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Novated Leasing has begun in Australia The legislation aims to promote EV adoption and encourage car manufacturers to import more affordable electric models to path the way for an electric future

Switching from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric vehicles offers numerous advantages for Australia These include lower carbon emissions, better air quality, enhanced energy security, economic prospects, and long-term savings Electric vehicle adoption in Australia has been slower compared to the global trend Factors contributing to this include limited infrastructure, availability, and higher initial costs. In contrast, Norway has emerged as a global leader in EV adoption, with over half of their new vehicle sales being electric in 2020 This discrepancy can be attributed to Norway's robust government incentives, extensive charging infrastructure, and supportive environmental policies
In 2022 EVs accounted for 3 8% of new vehicles sold in Australia The Australian Government’s answer to re-charging the EV appetite is the National Electric Vehicle Strategy As part of this strategy, the Electric Car Discount exempts EVs priced below the luxury car threshold of $84,916 from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT).

FBT is a tax applied to a non-cash benefit supplied from an employer to an employee When you salary package a vehicle via a Novated Lease it is deemed a fringe benefit under taxation law, making you liable for FBT With the Electric Car Discount now in place, the cost of purchasing and running electric vehicles has become more economical than ever With these new government incentives the CSIRO projects that Australia's car fleet could be fully electric by 2050, which would mean meeting the government’s net zero emissions target by 2050 Since our establishment in 2007, Simplygreen has been dedicated to offering ecofriendly salary packaging and novated leasing solutions We are committed to supporting our clients on their EV journey
While all of these economic and environmental benefits sound great, what are the actual cost savings? The FBT exemption makes EVs the most budget friendly choice across all price points Previously, a Tesla Model 3 would set you back around $1,350 per month (inclusive of all running costs like registration and insurance) With the introduction of the Electric Car Discount, an EV leased through Simplygreen (inclusive of finance payments and running costs) is reduced to $750 per month For a bit of perspective, that is around the same cost as a $29,000 petrol vehicle, inclusive of running costs It’s the ultimate way to purchase a

Why 60% of SMEs go bankrupt within 6 months of a cyberattack
60% of small companies go bankrupt within six months of a cyberattack — expert tips on how to avoid it.
By 2025, financial damage from cybercrime is expected to rise to over 10 trillion USD. The threat is often underestimated by companies of all sizes. The stakes are extremely high for small and medium businesses (SMBs). Eightythree percent of small businesses do not have additional funds set aside in case of such an event. Thus, 60% of small companies go bankrupt within six months after a cyberattack.

Mindset is key
According to research, most SMBs are unprepared for cyberattacks, and decisionmakers are to blame for it. For instance, 66% of leaders have a strong belief that their business will not face a cyberattack. Paradoxically, at least 67% SMBs reported a cyberattack in 2019. In addition, a common mindset includes thinking that a company “is too small, too new, or too unappealing to be targeted.” In reality, absolutely every kind of business can be a target of a cyberattack.
Carlos Salas, engineering manager at NordLayer, Nord Security’s product for business network
protection, says, “A mindset like ‘hackers only target big companies, so we’re safe being an SMB’ is problematic. Yet many decision-makers have this mindset. We need to understand that attackers can come in any shape, size, or form — from curious high schoolers trying to get recognition from their hacking forums to statebacked hacking squads. No target is too small.”
A cyberattack checklist for businesses Salas explains, “As always, preventive measures are the easiest (and cheapest) way to avoid data leaks, ransomware, and scams. If an attack has already happened, the best thing to do is contact the countries’ respective authorities in charge of cybercrime and get an assessment (post-mortem analysis) by a cybersecurity expert to prevent further damage.”
Additionally, Salas shares the following tips for businesses to minimize damage from a cyberattack:
- Make sure to change all the associated passwords.
- Disconnect from the internet.
- Disable remote access.
- Run a malware test.
Therecovery for our domestic travel has been much quicker, with overnight and day trip expenditure already surpassing pre-pandemic levels. While the recovery has been uneven across states and territories, visitor nights are forecast to be a minimum of 9 per cent higher that prepandemic in all states and territories by 2027.
I have been delighted to see Australians getting out and about around our country this year, and I look forward to our tourism and travel businesses welcoming more international
visitors in coming years.
The Albanese Government is committed to supporting the visitor economy both now and in the future. Tourism is not only a major employer and export earner for Australia, it also showcases to the people of the world the cultures, landscapes, and attractions that make Australia unique. While the pandemic stunted growth in international visitor numbers by several years, travellers are returning, and Tourism Australia’s new global campaign is sure to convert
the pent-up demand for an Australian holiday to see our iconic destinations and friendly faces, into bookings.
The recent Federal Budget provided $48 million in new funding to attract and skillup workers, support quality tourism products, and deliver infrastructure upgrades. These initiatives add further impetus to Australia’s national long-term strategy for the visitor economy, THRIVE 2030.
