How to get patients invested in

Every dentist should want their patients to not only receive the best dental treatment possible, but for them to understand and care about that treatment too.

Turning dentistry into a more human-related industry can have huge long-term benefits in encouraging patients to proactively prioritise their oral health and practice good oral hygiene.

Minimally invasive and preventive dentistry should be at the forefront of this shift in mentality for both clinicians and patients.

What is an intraoral camera?

An intraoral camera is a device used by clinicians to capture high resolution images of inside a patient’s mouth. Its design is slim and resembles that of an oversized pen.

The camera emits a light over the patient’s teeth and gums to produce real-time visuals that can be shared with the patient there and then.

Caries mode

Auto fluorescence is used to detect early caries, and lesions that don’t always show on a radiograph. Caries mode supports a minimal intervention approach and helps the patient to understand the suggested treatment plan.

During cavity preparation, the camera can be used to ensure the site is clean and ready to be restored.

Like all the other modes, it is activated at the push of a button and requires no dyes or solutions to be put on the teeth first, thus making is extremely fast and easy to use.

Determining working length made

Determining

endo working length is one of the most complex and important steps in any root canal treatment.

Successful treatment depends on being able to find the true working length. For every millimetre short the estimation, the chances of a successful outcome lessen.

The introduction of impedance-based electronic apex locators several years ago has helped make finding working length easier.

Modern apex locators can now deliver accuracy of up to 97%.

Electronic apex locators are more accurate than radiographs and are now an essential piece of endodontic equipment.

As well as being quicker and more accurate, electric apex locators provide the added benefits of being able to detect perforation, reduce patient radiation exposure and lessen the chances of damaging the apical constriction.

How does it work?

The Optima E+ uses an innovative inbuilt apex locator to get a highly accurate reading of the working length of a canal space.

It does this using the same science as all other electronic apex locators, relying on the body to complete an electrical circuit.

The tool has real-time display of file location in the canal and automatic or auto-stop functions for when the file reaches the apical stop to prevent perforation.

The Optima E+ comes with several advantages that make it capable of enhancing endodontic work.

Up until recently, electronic apex locators have mostly only been available as compact standalone units.

While accurate and easy to use, these systems are limited in that they require the dentist to switch between devices during treatment.

To eliminate the need for switching and reduce operation time for dentists, the Optima E+ Endodontic motor from B.A. International comes with an integrated apex locator

As with other apex locators, working length is indicated with a reading of 0 on the display.

The unit also works as a standalone apex locator using its EAL setting (in which the motor does not run). This can be selected via the motor’s control system.

What are the other benefits of the Optima E+?

The Optima E+ comes with several other advantages that make it capable of enhancing endodontic work.

One other big advantage is its advanced reciprocation feature (Safety Glide Path mode), whereby the forward angle must be equal to the reverse angle. The adjustment range is from 20° – 340° at 10° intervals.

Because the Optima E+ is a brushless motor it provides low noise levels (starting at maximum 38.5db, averaging 37.2db for 300RPM), making it one of the quietest motors currently on the market.

The brushless motor also improves cutting efficiency and reduces risk of instrument separation.
