Welcome from the Rector I’d like to offer all readers a very warm welcome to the first edition of Minerva in session 20192020 and take this opportunity to thank the entire Kelvinside Academy community for the strong support, encouragement and best wishes that I have received as I begin my first year as Rector.

I was truly energised and inspired at last term’s wonderful Prize Giving. The addresses were as emotive as ever and the two School Captains’ speeches will remain powerful drivers for me as we progress this year on our educational journey. Thanks to Amy Williams (S6) and Jameel Cathcart (S6) for their words and leadership.

At our staff in-service training in August, I promoted the importance of developing essential human skills in our pupils to prepare them for life in “The Smart Machine Age.” This I believe is fundamental to preparing our young people for the new world beyond school.

Fundraising Campaign Innovation School - NuVu Lifts Off In October 2018, Balfour Beatty broke ground at Kirklee on what has become a major development for Scottish Education - the NuVu Innovation School, which opened its doors to pupils in August 2019.

Two years previously, Kelvinside Academy had identified that the current curricular model is creating a significant and growing gap in the readiness of Scottish young people to develop future skills that will empower them to contribute to a society that is evolving as quickly as they are growing and learning. A consensus is building within industry and academia that there needs to be a positive alternative to our one-size-fits-all education model – one that better prepares our young people for an ever-changing and fast-moving world.

We formed an exclusive European partnership with Boston-based NuVu Studio, founded by three MIT alumni. Together, we have created a unique learning environment designed around creativity, innovation and enterprise. Our ambition is two-fold: to prepare every young person, in whatever discipline, with the creativity and adaptability to face a fast-moving jobs market. But equally, to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators by creating a new synergy between school, industry, technology and enterprise.

At the NuVu Innovation School, students will be engaged in hands-on problem solving, developing creative solutions for real-world problems, and building ambition through collaborative projects with real impact. We intend to shape a new national curriculum around digital skills and future learning, as well as forging a renewed national positivity and ambition.

The first floor Performance Studio is an exhibition, presentation and performance zone. A true multipurpose space, it accommodates a range of events from student exhibitions to lecture series and CPD workshops. Balfour Beatty Project Teams During the construction period of the Innovation School, build partners Balfour Beatty presented our pupils the opportunity to become active members of the Balfour Beatty Construction Project and Design Teams. Posters advertising the opportunity asked for pupils who were enthusiastic and forwardthinking as well as reliable and focussed with a disciplined approach. Applicants were interviewed by a panel: Mr Steve Petrie, Head of Business Improvement and Ms Marie McGilp, Procurement Manger (both Balfour Beatty) with Mr Michael Smith, Science Faculty Head and Mr David Miller, Director of the Innovation School.

Twelve pupils were appointed to the teams. The shadow Construction Project Management Team were Aleksander Alfer (S5), David McGiven (S5), Navraj Dhillon (S5), Robert Allen (S5), Daniella McCann (S5), Katie Coubrough (S5).

The shadow Design Team were Euan McManus (S5), India Green (S4), Mark MacMillan (S5), Samir Trache (S4), Ushna Waseem (S4) and James McColl (S4).

Members of the Project and Design Teams attended the monthly Project Management and Design Team meetings either on-site or at the Balfour Beatty Eurocentral Head Office.

The headline project saw the pupils becoming involved in the circular approach to the design and build of the Innovation School. Dovetailing into Zero Waste Scotland and the Scottish Government’s plans and targets, this ground-breaking approach is the first School Project in the UK to adopt the principles of the circular economy into a real project.

This strategic partnership provided enormous development and learning for our pupils and also encouraged “new thinking” from Balfour Beatty people being exposed to the thoughts, ideas and ambitions of the pupils at Kelvinside. Balfour Beatty Project Lead Graeme Sinclair said it was a pleasure and an inspiration to involved such enthusiastic and capable young people on the build.

INNOVATION

From mood-enhancing glasses to wheelchair fishing rods – pupils present their inventions to residents of Balmanno House Elderly residents of Balmanno House Care Home were given an opportunity to relive their favourite hobbies thanks to inventions created by our pupils.

Using 3D printers and laser cutters, the pupils designed and developed prototypes to help older people perform activities such as knitting and fishing. Among the other gadgets which will give the elderly residents a new lease of life is: mood enhancing spectacles; a Zimmer-gardening frame for planting and watering; a device to help wheelchair users play golf; and a hat to aid balance.

Ethel, resident of Balmanno House Care Home commented: “The pupils visited us and asked about favourite hobbies that we once enjoyed, but now struggle with. Then, a few weeks later, they returned with these incredible inventions.

“We were really impressed with their ingenuity and creativity. Some of them will grow up to be famous inventors, I’m sure!”

Pupils from Junior School through to S6 have worked on these innovation projects during the academic year, as we prepared to open Scotland’s School of Innovation – the first of its kind in the UK.

Prize Giving

New Era Prize Giving is always the highlight of our calendar as we come together to celebrate our young people and the school year.

The marquee at Balgray again proved to be a wonderful venue for such a special occasion. Our Guest of Honour was Mr Craig J Williamson who left in 1976 for an impressive career in finance as well as a Scottish rugby tour place in 1982.

The Rector’s address followed from Mr Ian Munro before he handed over the rectorship to Mr Daniel Wyatt.

More end of term memories. We love the Prize Giving marquee as it turns into a fantastic venue for our S6 Leavers Ball. Over 140 pupils, parents and teachers gathered on Friday evening to celebrate the ‘end of an era’ for our Class of 2019. We are very proud of this group of wonderful young people. Special thanks must be given to Ms Deborah Gallacher and Mrs Elaine Solman for organising such a wonderful evening for everyone.

School Captains and Prefects The outgoing Captains continued the tradition of ringing a bell in the Mall to publicly announce the names of the new captaincy team. Here is the 2019/20 line up: The Captains are Laura Turpie and Euan McManus.

The Vice Captains are Mia Paton, Cassie Smillie, Megan Toney, Lewis Ip and Navraj Dhillon. We have an additional Vice Captain this year to acknowledge the leadership skills of the incoming year group from Craigholme. Mia Paton will have a particular interest in helping our Craigholme pupils to settle in to their new school.

The 2019/20 prefect team have a big job this year with the number of pupils greatly increased. Prefects are expected to act as positive role models throughout our KA community, by demonstrating the highest standards of behaviour, attitude and appearance at all times.

Successful Transition from Red to Blue Following the changes to Craigholme Senior School last term, pupils were offered the chance to transfer directly over to Kelvinside Academy. It was hugely encouraging to see that so many Craigholme parents recognised our shared ethos that is deeply rooted in educational, caring and supportive values. We are delighted that 56 pupils have transitioned over to KA from Junior 3 right up to Senior 6. The girls and their families’ are very welcome to the Kelvinside community.

The girls looked very smart in their new blue uniforms on the first day of term.

To help ease the transition and allow the Craigholme spirit to live on at KA, all senior pupils in possession of colour awards have been able to transfer these to their new KA blazers with the addition of CHS letters to acknowledge their history.

We welcomed four new S6 pupils – three of whom are part of our Prefects group and Mia Paton has been appointed as a 5th Vice Captain. These senior

pupils have been tasked with supporting younger pupils in their settling in period.

Many of the other pupils have settled well, with CHS players in all our hockey teams from SP to the 1st XI and our choirs enjoying the benefits of new wonderfully enthusiastic musicians.

Staff News

Under the Junior Headship of Mrs Linda MacBeath, close links have been formed between the newly refurbished Nursery and Junior School at Craigholme with colleagues in the Junior School at KA. J4-J6 pupils are now travelling from Craigholme every Friday to spend lunchtime and Games with their KA classmates.

Whilst it may take a term or so for Craigholme families to fully navigate new systems and different ways of doing things, we are impressed by all pupils and parents for working so hard to embrace their new school with such enthusiasm. We hope that this is just the start of a successful pathway for many future Craigholme Junior School pupils.

We welcome 12 new members of staff.

In the Senior School, Mrs Norma Cuthbertson joins us as Head of Language Faculty and English teacher, Ms Farzanah Ishaque (Maths) Mrs Kim Booth (PE), Miss Samantha Johnstone (Chemistry), Mrs Abi Reid (English) Mr John McDermott (RMPS) and Mrs Catherine Munro (NuVu). Mr Jamie Smith rejoins KA to teach Modern Studies.

Farewell to staff After 3 years as our Rector, Ian Munro handed over leadership of the School to Dan Wyatt at Prize Giving as he heads north to become Rector at Dollar Academy. Dan paid tribute to Ian’s dynamic and ambitious leadership of KA and celebrated the large number of new initiatives and projects that Ian introduced to the school. Ian has become recognised throughout Scotland as a thought leader highlighting the need to implement changes to our education system and was instrumental in establishing our innovation school partnership with NuVu. Admissions Registrar Mrs Lynda Andonovic retired from her post at Easter after 23 years at KA. Lynda held various roles during her time here, including Rector’s PA to John Broadfoot, and PA to the Bursar; but will be best known to the KA community as the first point of contact for new pupils

and parents. Lynda’s attention to detail was legendary and her gentle kindness and practical, no nonsense approach is much missed by many. We wish Lynda a long and happy retirement with her family and new grandson Jack.

After 4 years teaching Maths, Mrs Audrey Gess bid farewell in June to enjoy a very well-deserved retirement. She will be using her new found freedom to spend more time with her two grandchildren and travel out with the school holidays!

We wish her all the best for this new chapter.

The PE department wishes Miss Heather Lang and Mr Garry Mercer our very best wishes as they move to new schools to continue to progress their teaching and coaching careers. We wish them well and hope to see them on playing fields in the future.

Meet Deborah Gallacher, KA’s new Head of Guidance and PSE

Tell us your favourite book, song, film? Any guilty pleasure TV box sets?

I have fairly diverse tastes in reading and have a whole host of favourite writers, including Samuel Beckett, Margaret Atwood and Lionel Shriver. My TV-based guilty pleasure is The Walking Dead: I am a zombie fan. I like a lot of different music too and a recent teaching highlight was being told by departing Senior 6 pupils that my playlists were so good, they would like me to “DJ their gaffes”. High praise, indeed.

The Pastoral Leadership Team at Kelvinside Academy are a group of committed professionals with a genuine interest in supporting the young people in their care. Our vision is to develop the characters and capacities of our young people, by meeting their needs, accepting them as individuals and setting them high standards.

Have you always been a teacher? Please tell us about your teaching journey…

I retrained as an English teacher after working in middle management within a large national finance company after university. As part of my degree, I spent a year in France as a language assistant and I was always drawn to teaching after that. After two years of full-time English teaching, I took on my first Guidance role; Pastoral Care has always been my priority as a teacher.

What attracted you to Kelvinside Academy?

When I was interviewed for the Head of Senior 6 role, I was immediately impressed by the inclusive ethos of the school and the obvious pride felt by the pupils who showed me around.

I left knowing I wanted to work here and I was delighted to be invited to do so.

Why is pastoral care more important than ever? Is it integral to education?

What is behind the growing mental health crisis in young people?

If people’s needs are not met, then they cannot function. Humans have complex needs: social, emotional, physical and mental. These needs are more acute in young adults, who are experiencing dramatic personal change. For me, effective pastoral care should go beyond managing people in crisis to pre-emptively addressing issues and creating a culture in which young people can flourish. Learning should be at the heart of all schools and learning can’t take

The mental health crisis in the UK is not something confined to teenagers and aspects of modern living contribute to angst. Being a teenager has always been tough and we know that any kind of personal change can be traumatic. Today, young adults face pressures in terms of achievement, appearance and levels of happiness that are simply unattainable.

These pressures are heightened by living in an information-dense world where they are always

Age is but a Number KA Nursery is Bridging the Generation Gap A group of 6 children have been making regular visits to residents at Balmanno House for intergenerational learning.

Both the children and residents have developed positive relationships with each other and look forward to their visits very much.

The project was initiated by nursery teacher Miss Demi Mardon, who has responsibility for developing initiatives to promote children’s health and wellbeing within the nursery. Demi liaises regularly with Balmanno House in planning appropriate and engaging activities for both young and old. These

have been varied and as simple as sharing a game, story or action song, cutting out and decorating paper outlines, threading and talking to each other.

The connections made with each other have to been lovely to observe, with the main aim being to build relationships and help each other gain from shared experiences and knowledge.

The self-esteem, confidence, communication and social skills have continued to develop over the regular visits and the enjoyment that both children and residents experience from these developing relationships is reason enough to continue promoting and building links such as these.

World of Work

S4 WORK EXPERIENCE

University Library

For my work experience week, I worked at the University of Glasgow library. During the week I got to try lots of different jobs, such as working in admin, helping at the welcome desk, organising the shelves, locating the books, and operating the conveyor system. Throughout my experience I worked with lots of different members of staff, they were all very nice and helpful. Most of the time I was shown how to do a task then left to do it on my own. I really liked working independently. My favourite and most challenging experience of the week was when people came to me for help, and I was able to point them in the right direction. I really enjoyed my work experience week, and I found it very interesting to see how everything works behind the scenes.

KPMG Accountants

I did a week placement at KPMG Glasgow office.

KMPG is known as one of the big four accountancy firms in the UK. On the first day I shadowed the Cyber Security Team. Next I worked with the Personal Restructuring Team (they deal with individuals who cannot pay debts). It was interesting to see even though they had to deal with people who were being difficult they managed not to get frustrated, keep a cool head and help the clients as best as possible.

My favourite part of my work experience week was when I was present in a conference call about a large company that had experienced some financial difficulty and was restructuring. During this call I learned first-hand how important having a good relationship with a client is. The most challenging part of my placement was the longer hours, this got quite tiring as the week went on. Even though it got tiring, my placement was very interesting and I learned a lot about the different departments within KPMG. Everyone was very helpful and nice which made the week very enjoyable.

Thales

I worked with a company called Thales. Thales is a company that builds and designs electrical systems as well as provides services for defence and aerospace. During my time at Thales I visited every department, from Avionics to Human Resources. I met lots of interesting people that gave me insight about all the technology they are developing and how a company as big as Thales was run. Each day I was assigned to a different person and I would go with them to their meetings or learn about how they conducted their jobs. Overall my time at Thales was very insightful and I enjoyed it a lot.

Maria McCann (S4)

NuVu, USA

For my work experience I travelled to Cambridge in Boston, USA. I worked at the NuVu Innovation School on Massachusetts Avenue which was a busy street with lots going on. One of my main duties was to contribute to brainstorming sessions.

There were many different people who worked there, the teachers all specialised in different things but were all amazing in their own way. They all inspired the students to do their best and to think for themselves.

One of my favourite experiences from NuVu was helping one of the students construct a pulley system. It was amazing how the teachers would ask for a task to be done and the students were left to their own devices. They did have help to make their design better but they were able to create a design on a laptop have it laser cut and be constructed all within 30 minutes.

Molecular Biology, Iceland

I spent a week in Iceland with my assessor who has a background in molecular biology and genetics and works for both Reykjavik University and University of Iceland, which is one of a very few collaborative projects between the two Universities.

One of my assessor’s projects is to develop genetically modified fish which mimic certain human diseases. Pharmaceutical companies will then test their drugs on the fish and examine their effects, before they are put onto the market. They offer a verifiably ground-breaking approach to early drug development and have made many discoveries in both Parkinson’s and epilepsy.

During my work experience, they were examining batches of fish to see if they had the particular modified gene. One of my jobs was to set up and tidy equipment for my assessor and her colleagues.

As well as type up their files of fish mortality rates and causes, which is important as there are very strict laws when working with animals.

My work experience very interesting. I was surprised by how secure the lab was, as there are 3 doors you need to pass with ID before entering. I was also not expecting it to be so precise, as if you make a mistake you have to start for scratch.

Music Production

Mediaspec welcomed Blair Ferguson (S4) as a Young Producer In Residence. Blair writes and produces his own music and is beginning to make waves in the US hip-hop world by working with some of the brightest up-and-coming talent in the rap industry.

And it was enough for Mediaspec to invite Blair to spend the week learning more about the industry.

Writing and producing under the name BLK Beats, Blair spent the week producing music that Mediaspec can use in promotional videos, while learning about Pro Tools and other industry-standard editing tools, and visiting suppliers to gain a better understanding of the music and post-production industries.

Eric Joseph, Managing Director of Mediaspec, said: “There’s nothing we like better than seeing talent develop, and in all the years of Mediaspec we’ve seen so many acts, studios and film-makers grow into big names in the industry. So to now be working with a young talent still at school is great for us. Blair already has a talent well beyond his 15 years, and we hope this will be the start of a great relationship, but will also give Blair invaluable experience of the industry.”

Architecture Firm

I was based in an architectural design firm in Glasgow that specialise in leisure all around the world.

During my time there, I participated in some of their current contracts and the processes involved. I was also given a second year university task to do on CAD. There were many people involved in the firm that had been around the world and had met many influential people such as princes, celebrities and much more. Personally, I enjoyed looking through some of their past and current projects including the Queen Street Station renovation. For me, the most challenging experience was using CAD at a very high level and designing a 2nd year level task.

One challenge I had to overcome was working with programmes such as JavaScript and Arduino but the people there were very understanding and helped me until I was able to continue with the job.

The inaugural Kelvinside Careers Fair was a huge success. S4 and S5 pupils learned about career options, the world of work, job opportunities apprenticeship pathways and what skills are required for success.

Passport to the World of Books Our Junior Library is a treasure trove for avid readers as well as the perfect inviting environment for those still to discover the reading bug. Librarians, Ms McLay and Miss Tipping, run a Reading Passport Scheme which encourages readers of all stages to work their way up through Bronze, Silver, Gold and now Platinum passports.

Freya Murty (SP) was the first to achieve the Gold Reading Passport last year in J6 – an achievement in itself as she only joined the school in J5. This year Stella Cousins (J6), Karl Otto (J6) and Alice Ruda (J6) have joined the golden line-up. However, we have had to extend the scheme to include a Platinum Passport to accommodate the reading appetite of Ashwin Dykes who reached this new pinnacle prior to the end of J6.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering We were invited to spend the week at the Prof D G Smith Prize Event at Strathclyde University. This course was mainly focused on Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Firstly, we were given a masterclass in how to solder and then using this skill we made a functioning remote controller.

Next we were split into teams of three and given the task of creating and designing an app that would harness the new capabilities of 5G technology.

We had to design every aspect of the app including the name, interface design and app icon. The challenge was to find a method to fund your app. We had to had to present our idea to a panel of judges consisting of lecturers and current students. The week was concluded with a prize ceremony where Kai Ye’s team won with an average score of 8.5/10.

Kelvinside Academy in National Maths Final A team of 4 pupils competed against teams from across the United Kingdom for this year’s UK Team Mathematics Challenge trophy. The team of Laura Van Heijnsbergen (S2), Adrian Chew (S2), Yahya Cathcart (S1) and Sophie Sproule (S1), won the opportunity to compete in the National Final at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London in June. Over 1700 schools entered the competition and only 5 schools from Scotland qualified to this next stage of the competition.

Taking part in the UK Finals was an excellent opportunity for all the students involved. They competed against 87 of the top schools in the UK and it was even more special to be able to experience the sights and sounds of London before the competition.

All of us agree this was an amazing opportunity and experience where we learned useful new skills for the future.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS J6 Show - Annie The weather was miserable in March but the sun certainly came out with the J6 production of Annie!

elegant and demure Daniella Garcia Herreros, in her portrayal of his secretary Grace Farrell.

The classic rags to riches musical of the little orphan Annie, played to packed audiences on two evenings, with Stella Cousins and Isla Church both in top form in the title role.

Indeed, the supporting cast throughout was excellent, with standout performances by Freddie Payne as Bert Healy the Radio Presenter and Campbell Walker in the role of Sandy the dog.

The production got off to a rousing start as the bunch of feisty orphans performed a brilliantly choreographed rendition of ‘It’s a Hard-Knock Life’.

The energy stepped up a notch with the entrance of the villain, Miss Hannigan, played by Amelia Roberts, her scenes with her partners in crime Rooster (Sebastian Millar) and Lily (Alice Ruda and Alicia Bakewell) proved both shifty and funny.

The hardworking ensemble was versatile and talented bringing energy, pace and charm through their acting, singing and dancing.

to former pupil Sophie Joint (2018) for pre-show musical entertainment.

The pace and dynamics of the production were spot-on and the heart-warming and perfect finale were just right bringing tears to the eyes of all who saw it.

The choreography, direction and organisation skills of Mrs MacBeath, Mrs Paterson, Mrs Flanigan and Mrs Murty pulled the production together and brought out the best in all of our Junior 6 performers. EXPRESSIVE ARTS The Junior 1 Show The Junior 1’s put on a great performance of their own play ‘Snow White and the Boy Band’.

The children performed amazingly and were complimented on their loud, clear voices and on learning so many lines! The children thoroughly enjoyed performing the show to their mums, dads, grannies and grandads.

Primary in the girls final and Maxwelton in the boys.

Both were essentially EK teams so we knew the final wouldn’t be straight forward. Both the boys and the girls beat their respective teams and we were crowned double champions with Freya Murty (S1) and Angus Semple (S1) collecting the trophies.

A perfect way to end the season.

Handball Scottish Club League This season we have had 6 teams playing in the SHA League. Our J3/4 and J5/6 teams participated in the Youth Play Offs throughout the season and performed brilliantly. Our J3/4s and J5/6s won nearly all their matches, the future of KA Handball is looking bright! The S3/4 girls have moved into the Women’s Development league playing against teams several years their senior. The girls played well and several draws and a long awaited win v Tryst were the highlights of their season.

Our SP/S1/S2 girls team 2 put in some solid performances beating all the teams in the league bar Troon. A 3rd place finish for them this season provides something to build upon next season.

Undefeated this season and runaway league winners are our SP/S1 boys captained by Jack Dalziel (S1), our SP/S1 girls 1 captained by Louise Kemp (S1), and the S2/3 boys captained by Rory Semple (S3). All three teams have put in exceptional performances all season.

Cup Final 5 KA teams were in action cup final weekend with KA players, coaches and alumni featuring in 3 more!

We started the day with J5/6s who competed in a mini festival. They played brilliantly winning most of their matches and finishing runners up.

SP/S1 took to the stage next where they battled EK in a very one sided final. KA romped home to a 28-3 victory with captain and goalie Jack Dalziel keeping a clean sheet for more than two thirds of the game.

A KA derby was next up with SP/S1/S2 girls playing each other. Team 1 did not start or play as well as they normally do and left the door open for Team 2. With only 8 in it at half time it was anyone’s game. Team 2 had some excellent chances but Aideen McAuslane (S1) was too good in goals.

Ivy Gerber (S2) made some amazing saves namely Louise Kemp’s fast break! Team 1 finished eventual winners with a 24-13 win.

Final match for KA was the S2/3 boys v Troon. This is a rematch of last year’s final where Troon were victorious. This time team KA were determined to rewrite the script. After a slightly nervous start KA soon found their rhythm and finished eventual winners with a 28-16 win, a more comfortable victory than expected.

Scottish Schools’ Competitions S1/2 boys – Scottish Champions After the festive break the first school’s competition was for the S1/2 boys. After a strong performance in qualifying hopes were high for the final. We were up against Marr College who we knew would be tough opposition. Our boys, captained by Finlay Speirs (S2), put in a strong team performance and secured the win. A 9-6 victory and Scottish Champions.

Three more players were chosen to represent Scotland at international tournaments this summer.

Isla Bottomley (S3) and Ivy Gerber (S2) both travelled to Bergen in Norway to play for the Scotland U16 team. Jamie Gray (S5) captained the Scotland U17 team at the recent Partille Cup. Well done to all on achieving their first Scotland Caps with hopefully lots more in the future.

Internationalists We had 8 KA handball internationalists this season!

5 KA boys were selected to represent Scotland as part of a 23 player squad competing at the Prague Handball Cup over Easter weekend. Scotland entered two teams with Rory Semple (S3), Marley Boweh (S3) and Oliver Henderson (S3) playing for Ecosse I and Louis Henderson (S2) and Myles Macaulay (S2) in Ecosse II. Scotland were drawn against teams from Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic and Sweden and there were some very close matches. All 5 KA boys put in strong performances both in attack and defence with Rory and Marley battling it out for top goal scorer.

S2/3 boys – 4th place Our weekend age categories don’t match the schools’ categories making this a tough ask. We have no S4 boys who play so it was up to our S2 boys to step in. Winning all but one of our group matches saw us face Linlithgow Academy for 3rd/4th. Unfortunately, things did not go our way and the boys finished a commendable 4th.

S5/6 boys – 3rd place This shaped up to be a better outing than expected with our S3/5/6 team finishing 3rd beating a strong Marr (Troon) team in the 3rd/4th place match.

SP – Boys & Girls Scottish Champions Last up to compete were the SPs, an unfortunate clash with the Henderson Challenge meant we didn’t have a full strength squad. For the first time the competition was split with both the boys and girls competing separately. Both teams qualified with ease for the final. We were to play Hunter Minerva

HOCKEY Congratulations to the S3 hockey team who made it all the way to the Junior Girls’ Scottish Schools Bowl final. It was a sensational match in which George Watson’s College unfortunately took the spoils with a 3-1 win. Amy Turpie’s (S3) strike made

for an intense end to the match with the game charging from end-to-end but with a minute to go George Watson’s put the result beyond any doubt with their 3rd goal.

There were also fantastic results from the Glasgow Schools Primary Athletics Finals. The girls did very well finishing in 2nd place overall. The boys went one step better and were joint winners of the boys shield.

Ski Trip to Alpe D’huez A group of S5 and S6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic week skiing in February, accompanied by Mrs Bev Meikle, Ms Deborah Gallacher and Mr Craig Simpson. 23 pupils benefitted from fantastic weather and ideal snow conditions in the French Alps. Enjoy a ‘day by day’ account of the trip highlights.

Day 1: Following a VERY early start, excitedly, we boarded our flight to Lyon. Having two other schools on board made seating arrangements rather confusing. Like a very complex game of human Tetris, we negotiated, swapped and shuffled

our way to desired seats and settled down for a subdued and snore-filled flight! Expecting heavy snow and storms, much like the high winds that had sent us on our way in Glasgow, we kitted up and braced ourselves for a ‘February in France’ welcome, only to be met with welcome sunshine. At our hotel, La Vallee Blanche, the views from the balcony far exceeded those on the journey: glaciated mountain tops set perfectly on backdrop pinks, oranges and reds. A truly picture perfect sight to get us in the mood for skiing.

Day 2: We hit the slopes for the first time at 9am everyone bright eyed, bushy tailed and raring to get going. As if we weren’t all already excited enough by our first venture into the snow, we met our ski instructors and the week ahead just got even better.

But while the enthusiasm levels sky-rocketed, there was (like any skier on their first run) a lot of comic mistakes made. The general consensus was, when asked for their favourite part of the day, the image of Ms Gallacher tripping on her first run - among many others - resonated most strongly in the memories.

Poles were dropped, skis were snapped and moguls were tumbled over. All in all, a fantastic first few runs. In the evening we explored the village, found there are few better sights than frosted chalets, and tried our hands at crepe making - some more successfully than others. With the snow falling outside and the number of ping pong players in the common room slowly diminishing, we got ready for our next days’ foray onto the pistes of Alpe D’Heuz.

Day 3: We awoke to a blizzard that showed no signs of letting up and we hit the slopes in horizontal snow and high winds. Numerous skis were lost in the fresh powder, along with a few students (all found within a matter of moments - not to worry).

A meal highlight was being served an utterly giant cake to mark Tom Graham’s 17th birthday. The layer of luscious sponge and filling, topped with endless chocolate icing, that we steadily munched our way through, was a sweet ending to a great day.

Day 4: Tuesday brought with it the long awaited

promise of sun- and it did not disappoint. We woke to rays of warmth peaking in through windows and splitting trees down in the valley, instilling in everyone a new spring into their step. Confidence grew now that everyone could actually see the ends of their skis, all showing more belief in their skiing abilities. We covered a huge amount of the ski area and the beginner group in particular really made progress; venturing on to their first red run.

Day 5: Day 5 was most definitely a highlight… We enjoyed glorious weather, travelling the mountains to the hum of Circus Techno music from the top of the highest peak, providing a perfect rhythm for gliding down in the snow. Skiing became second nature; we were comfortable in our boots and confident in our balance. But however far we had come in terms of skiing, the same could not be said for our ice-skating abilities. Our evening activity certainly proved far harder than it looked! Skates tied up and gloves on (a safety-net we were all thankful for), we hit the rink; literally in some cases!

Like ‘Bambi-on-ice’ we comically slid about, but all in all had great fun.

Day 6: The final day. There is no doubt that we all improved our skiing, and for many, completing the world famous (or infamous?) black run ‘La Sarenne’ was a huge personal achievement. What’s more, we all agreed that there is no better way to spend Valentine’s Day than on skis in the sun!

Bath Rugby Tour

French Trip to Nice On our trip to Nice we immersed ourselves fully in the French culture. We only spoke French, whether that be to order food or simply to ask for directions.

When we weren’t speaking French, we walked along the Promenade des Anglais, discovered the quaint ruelles (alleys), visited the food and flower market and admired the famous art at Le MusÊe Matisse. A memorable event was the climb up castle hill. Once we finished the climb we were rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the city. We were lucky to stay in a cute hotel near to the main tourist sites and to have such lovely teachers accompany us.

Day 1 Early departure to Glasgow Airport for our flight to Bristol. The boys were really excited for the tour with 2 rugby fixtures v Oldfield RFC and Chew Valley RFC. On arrival at Bristol airport we boarded a coach to Farleigh House (Bath Rugby Training Facility) on the outskirts of Bath. The boys viewed a professional rugby team training session, met some of the current players and did a Q&A with Zach Mercer. Back on the bus to our accommodation at the Youth Hostel. Once the boys were checked into their rooms it was dinner then a brisk walk to Bath Leisure Centre for Ten Pin Bowling.

Day 2 After a full English breakfast, it was a short journey to Oldfield RFC for our 1st game. The boys performed well with some good tries and a real team effort.

Unfortunately, the opponents were bigger and stronger and KA lost the game by a couple of tries.

Oldfield put on a great lunch for the boys which was engulfed very swiftly. The boys were then taken to a local family pub to watch the Scotland v Ireland match. Soft drinks all round!!! After the game we were back on the bus to the Hostel for dinner. In the evening the boys went to watch the Lego Movie 2. To burn off all the ice cream, sweets and fizzy ginger the boys had a 30 min walk back to the Hostel.

Day 3 After an early breakfast it was back on the bus for our final tour match v Chew Valley RFC. On arrival it was a swift change, warm up and then into the action. Again the boys fronted up with some good defensive play but they found it a tough match against bigger, stronger and more experienced opponents.

The boys certainly enjoyed the experience of touring with a lot to do in a short period of time. For some of the boys this was the first time away from their family. As a group they bonded very quickly and for both Mr Lawson and Mr Mercer the boys made the trip very enjoyable. The SP boys were excellent role models for the J5&6 lads which was very much to

their credit. The boys were great ambassadors for the school and parents would have been very proud of them on and off the pitch.

A big thank you must go to Mr Mercer for all his hard work organising the trip.

Partille Cup, Sweden, June 2019

Helsingborg Trip, February 2019 Our SP/S1 boys and girls teams were invited over to Helsingborg in Sweden for a weekend of training and matches. Travelling via Denmark we made it to Helsingborg where we were treated to a late lunch before a joint training session involving more than 60 players! Sunday morning saw competitive matches between the two clubs. Our SP/S1 boys drew twice with OV Helsingborg 16-16 and 17-17.

The SP/S1 girls were not quite so fortunate and suffered a 23-11 loss. Both teams enjoyed Fika (Swedish cakes) before playing mixed team matches in the afternoon before finishing the weekend off with bowling.

A great experience for all involved and we are looking forward to a reciprocal visit in November.

30 KA players made the trip to Gothenburg, Sweden to compete in the Partille Cup - one of the world’s largest youth sports tournaments and regarded as the Mecca of Handball. 1300 teams and over 12000 players makes this tournament the toughest and most prestigious.

Playing outdoors is a novel experience especially in very changeable weather and the players were glad of our outdoor training sessions in the sun, rain and wind before we left.

Our SP/S1 boys made a solid start pushing the Scandinavian teams to some close results. The boys made massive progress over the week and bettered last year with a win and a draw and a top 16 finish in the B play offs.

The SP/S1 girls started with a bang and won 4 and drew 1 in their group matches meaning they finished 2nd in their group and entered the A play offs. This is the first time any club or school side from the UK has ever made the A play offs. Unfortunately, the first play-off match was one match too many and the girls were narrowly defeated finishing in the top 16 in the A section.

Our S2/3 boys definitely were the team who found their rhythm and form as the tournament went on.

Their group match results were very close and the boys were unlucky to not finish higher in their group missing out on 4th on goal difference. The boys entered the B play offs and had 3 wins in one day taking them into the last 8 and playing at Heden on Saturday – finals day. This match drew a large crowd with the Scotland and GB teams coming to support.

A close match which could have gone either way with the boys narrowly missing out on a semi-final place.

Our three teams should be very proud of their achievements - 9 wins, 2 draws, boys in last 8 and girls in the A finals and 238 goals scored in 5 days! Player of the Tournament for each team were awarded to Louis Coubrough (S1), Louise Kemp (S1) and Louis Henderson (S1).

All our players were also gifted a set of kit from the Swedish National Team in light of their excellent performances.

Massive thanks to coaches Sarah Carrick, Jack Porter (2018), James Kemp (2018) and our two guest coaches Scott and Wilb for helping make Partille 2019 our most successful trip ever. It wouldn’t have been the same without you all.

RAF Summer Camp, Henlow Flt Lt Cormack, Mrs Busby, Cadet Cpl Lara Ptolomey (S5) and I travelled to RAF Henlow for this year’s RAF summer camp. After a long (and very hot) bus journey we finally arrived in time for a welcome evening meal. We then met our fellow cadets from other schools and were briefed on house-keeping rules. Before bed the flight list was pinned on the board outside our dormitories and the constant phrases of “I’m in your flight” or “our flight is going to win” could be heard.

We woke up the next morning keen to get our first day of camp started as we were going to Hendon to see all the different RAF aircraft. I’m not sure everyone felt so interested to see a bunch of planes but I loved it.

S6 – Wilderness Campus Some of the departing S6 enjoyed an action packed four days at the Wilderness Campus as part of their Activities Week. In a joint venture with new partner BASC (British Association of Shooting and Conservation) they were treated to some clay pigeon shooting, air rifle shooting and fly fishing.

As well as all the activities, conservation played a huge part in the week and the evenings were spent

learning about habitats and land management.

Scottish Natural Larder treated us all on the first night to a feast of game inspired food including a pigeon and black pudding salad! A fantastic 4 days with an equally fantastic group of pupils!

Cadets bonded together preparing our uniform for the annual camp photo - ironing shirts, trousers and polishing shoes – before all 34 cadets lined up in a single file row next to the Hunter Aircraft. We were in height order with the tallest on the right and shortest on the left and even though there were 34 cadets I was, predictably, the shortest cadet. After lunch we met the Station Commander who wasn’t at all what we expected. She was a lovely and not-soscary lady and we all had an amazing conversation with her. While on camp we were instructed to salute the Station Commander whenever we saw her or her car (it was the only car with a flag) which brought home to us that camp was a whole lot different than just doing drill and marching and saluting.

During fire brief we tried out the fire extinguishers and I was nominated to try the carbon dioxide which was the hardest to use (by the looks of it).

Being brave I went up but it took me a few seconds (seemed like a long time) to remove the safety clip, something I had to do in front of my fellow cadets, which was a bit embarrassing but knowing what to do incase of a fire made it a serious lesson.

We spent Wednesday morning with the outreach team, performing Operation X where we were split into groups and each had to make tough decisions to complete the best possible outcome for each task.

My favourite camp experience had to be the day at Twinwoods Adventure when we all faced our fear to climb high, go skydiving and jump off an 125ft building - very intense indeed. Jumping down was definitely easier than climbing up to the top.

From a learning prospective, I loved my time in the flying club hanger learning how to make the base of the plane parts. I was interested in this as engineering is a career I may want to pursue.

On our last night we had lots of fun in the base pitches, hilariously marching to the Sponge Bob Square Pants song and receiving our own personalised paper plate awards. We had a lovely time that night with jokes, games and some traditional Scottish dancing.

Unforgettable memories were made on my first camp and I cannot wait for my next.

Flying Experience Our S3 RAF cadets enjoyed an introductory flying experience at Glasgow Airport in a Grob Tutor G115, a fixed wing aircraft used by the RAF for flight training.

They each had the opportunity to take control of the aircraft under supervision and guidance as well as experience the gravitational force commonly known as of G force during loop the loop and barrel roll aerial acrobatics.

CCF 2019 Annual Camp, Barry Buddon Annual Camp seems to appear as if out of nowhere, amid much excitement, at the end of every school year.

After the end of term buzz, Annual Inspection and Prize Giving just having passed, you find yourself back at Barry Buddon, raring to get stuck into a week of challenging tasks and thrilling activities. The phrase ‘work hard, play hard’ has never been better demonstrated. Kelvinside Academy has, for a long time now, enjoyed a fantastic reputation at the Barry Buddon training area and the cadets this year were keen to live up to this reputation.

Having waved RSM Lewis Pocock (S6) goodbye as he set out to the Argonaut Army Summer Training Program in Canada, CSM Jameel Cathcart (S6) took up the reigns with enthusiasm and determination.

Operation Striking Lion, known amongst cadets as the ‘36-hour op’, was just as mentally demanding as it was physically. Plans changed continually and SNCOs were pushed to stay on top of feeding information to their sections. However, despite Section Commanders doing their job to high standards, we did have some casualties! SSgt Laura Turpie (S5) fell during the Section Patrol, dislocating her knee. “The importance of staying tactical” briefing given by TSM Jamie Campbell (S6) had evidently stayed paramount to Laura, and her efforts were acknowledged by SSI Reid in the form a recovery hot chocolate upon return to camp.

On our ‘day off’ we visited the local activities center to shake off excess energy and reinforce our team bonds.

And what better way to strengthen friendships, than to pull on wetsuits and engage in a freezing game of water polo, followed by kayaking? We had lunch on the banks of the loch, looking over the water, glad that we were now dry and happy we had concurred the ‘bridge crossing’ task and successfully trounced the staff at water polo.

Seven schools, hundreds of cadets and one big game of football. That was, in hindsight, the best way for us all to integrate with our fellow students at Barry Buddon.

Kelvinside pupils have never been “the shy ones” at camp - long lists of good friends from previous camps are testament to this - so as usual we got stuck in. We put up a good fight, but our confidence was definitely more impressive than our football skills. But regardless of sporting ability, we established friendships that would go on to serve us well in upcoming activities. One such being the Round Robin. In groups of mixed cadets from four different schools (Kelvinside, Islington, Edinburgh Academy and George Heriots), we took on various tasks including First Aid and Paintball Section Attacks.

While standards were high across the board, we all soon

realised that the strongest and most successful sections were those with the best bonds amongst their cadets.

We pushed ourselves mentally and physically, not just for the bragging rights in the Mess Hall, but primarily for the team and the share of victory.

As with every year, Annual Camp draws to a close with hectic Marching-Off Parade rehearsals; uniform is perfected for inspection by the Camp RSM and everyone runs through their parade movements over and over.

Suddenly the prospect of our S6s moving onto pastures new becomes a reality. A hum of fond reminiscing settles over the Company; cadets chat about their first time on parade as bright eyed S3s and share a laugh over “Quick Shine” moments. Then the parade begins. This year’s Guard Commander SSgt Ewan McManus (S5) marched Guard onto parade with HQ and junior cadets formed up on the drill square. Kelvinside really do put on a good show and many a tear was shed.

After inspection was over and the Camp RSM had given us a terrific farewell, we proceeded on to promotions within the Company for the 2019/2020 session. CSM Jameel Cathcart (S6) handed over the helm of the Pearson Company to SSgt Ewan McManus (S5), who received the CSM stick in a ceremonious hand-over on parade. SSgt Laura Turpie (S5) - unfortunately in absentia due to her knee injury - was given the position of CQMS and SSgt Robert Allen (S5) took on the new position of CQMS Tech. SSgt Zander Alfer (S5) was promoted to Head of Training and I was promoted to RQMS. Last, but certainly not least, SSgt Tom Graham was promoted to the position of RSM and received a thunderous applause and whoops of support from the whole company.

Our discipline and performance around camp were once again exemplary – something that the Barry Buddon RSM commended us for. As a new HQ and upcoming S6 team, looking towards the next year, I think we all understand the challenges that lie ahead. But camps such as Barry Buddon remind us that teamwork can overcome any test; enthusiasm and dedication will always get you places and the 36-hour exercise will never not be cold, long and a little bit stressful. As a company we wish all the S6s good luck on their journeys. They showed us the way, and made this Barry Buddon one that we will never forget. So, let the next year commence, because there is no doubt that Annual Camp will appear again before we feel we’ve even begun.

CCF ANNUAL INSPECTION CCF Inspection was a most impressive display of well-drilled cadets and precise formation marching.

RSM Lewis Pocock (S6) took great pride in presenting our Army, Navy and RAF contingents to VIP guest, Academical and inspecting officer, Brigadier Robin Simpson (1978). Brigadier Simpson left Kelvinside to study Medicine at Aberdeen University. He then joined the army and was deployed on many tours of duty abroad. Brigadier

Simpson is particularly interested in making GPs more aware of veteran’s health issues and is now the RCGP Veterans Champion and the Professor of Military Primary Healthcare and Veterans Health University of Chester. In January 2018 he was appointed Queens Honorary Surgeon. We were very pleased and proud to welcome him back to Balgray and honoured to have him inspect our cadets.

Well done to Milo MCKoen (S6) who was selected for the Scotland shooting team.

Aryan Munshi (SP) was selected to represent Scotland at the World Cadets Chess Championship in Weifang, China. The budding grand master took on young players from around the world at the elite chess tournament which comprises of 11 rounds over a 12-day period.

Ava Hamilton (SP) became Scottish Champion in Bouldering at the SYBC in Edinburgh and 9th overall in the British YCS climbing finals. She also travelled to Imst, Austria to compete in her first International U14’s lead climbing competition. She climbed really well and is looking forward to competing again next year.

Congratulations to Finlay Barr (J6) who continued to dominate competitive mountain biking by winning the U12 Clydesdale Colts, West of Scotland MTB and the Parklife Race. Impressive results indeed!

Gilli Jones (S2), Taylor Browning (S3), Tom Shields (S1) and Lewis Ip (S5) were invited to participate in the BBC 10 Pieces project, they were recorded and filmed singing a piece by Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean!)

Well done to Ida Ewald (S3) who competed at the British Championships in Ruhpolding. Ida won both the 5km skate and classic races in her category U15.

She also competed at the Koenig Ludwig Lauf in Obberammergau.

She decided to compete in the 23km skate race, where she came 1st in the U15 category. Ida also came 6th in the 5km skate race at the European Ski Marathon Championships in France.

Congratulations to Finlay Speirs (S2) who won the Glasgow Golf Club Junior Singles Handicap Championship 2018. Well done!

Holly Hailstone (S2) competed in the javelin event at the Scottish National Athletics Championships at Grangemouth. She won Gold, set a personal record and now sits as the highest ranked thrower in Scotland in the power of 10. She also competed in the discus, setting a personal record, and coming away with bronze.

Congratulations to Emma Campbell (S2) who was selected for the West U14 Hockey team.

Well done to Katie Coubrough (S4) who has been offered a Senior Orchestra place in The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. This is a rare opportunity and as a cellist in the Senior Orchestra, Katie was invited to a Spring and a Summer residential course, followed by the opportunity to experience the thrill of orchestral performance at top venues across Scotland.

Congratulations to Lucy Robinson (S5) for dedication as a Tron Ambassador resulting in her achieving a Silver Award.

Tron Ambassadors allows participants to work alongside industry professionals in many of the roles available within a working theatre building, and in making connections across the creative industries. Participants have the opportunity to gain an Arts Award qualification to support their efforts and achievements, with Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold levels available within the structure. These are externally verified by Trinity College, London; the international exam board for the performing arts and English language.

Debbie Montgomery, Creative Learning Officer at The Tron, said that “Lucy has been an excellent Tron Ambassador and has worked very hard throughout the programme.

Thanks to her dedication and diligence, we are able to present her for a Silver Award (Level 2 Award in the Arts).”

Scotland came second to England (1949 vs 1931) in the recent Schools National Match. Milo was Scotland’s second best shot scoring 98 and 97 on his two cards.

Huge congratulations to PierreSamy Eteiba (S5) who passed his Grade 8 Piano exam. What an achievement!

Congratulations to Jamie Campbell (S6) and Rory Jackson (S6) who were selected to represent Scotland at the Six Nations Festival. It was a superb contest against Ireland which saw Scotland U18s win 42-40.

Omid Najafian (J2) honoured the memory of his younger brother with a statue on the Oor Wullie Bucket Trail. The Oor Wullie Bucket Trail was the first nationwide public art trail in Scotland, with statues displayed from Inverness to Glasgow.

Omid’s brother Darius sadly passed away in 2016, just two weeks after his second birthday. To commemorate his life, Omid and his schoolmates Anna Donnelly (J2), Lizzie Henderson (J3), Leila Murphy (J5) and Rory Dalziel (J4) designed and dedicated the sculpture of the iconic Scottish figure to his memory. By doing so, they raised funds for Glasgow Children’s Hospital which cared for Darius during his life.

The statue was displayed alongside many others in the Botanic Gardens during the summer.

Mr Dan Wyatt, Rector said: “Omid and his classmates have done a wonderful job with the Oor Wullie statute. They really captured Wullie’s love of life and fun-loving spirit.

“There was a really creative process, and all pupils worked in collaboration to create their masterpiece.”

Catriona leads the enterprise-wide drive for consistency, continuous improvement and knowledge. Previously with Jacobs Catriona held the Vice President of Operations Leadership role for the U.K. Energy and Water Business and established and grew Jacobs’ Sustainable Solutions, a technical management consultancy business in the U.K. She served 5 years in business development with key accounts for a Nuclear related portfolio and a major Water capital delivery program. Joining Jacobs in 2004, through the Babtie Group acquisition, she held the position of Business Centre Director and was responsible for the U.K. Environmental Consultancy business.

Catriona has a BSc in Applied Geology, an MPhil in Civil Engineering with Hydro-geochemistry. In 2016 she was honoured with Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers for her contribution of sustainable practices to everyday engineering and in May of this year, was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement in Engineering Award from the European Women in Construction & Engineering (WICE).

Jamie Andrew (1987) OBE – Mountaineer Jamie Andrew is the first quadruple amputee in the world to have climbed The Matterhorn in Switzerland, the first to climb Kilimanjaro in Africa, the first to complete a Marathon and the first to complete an Iron Man Triathlon.

In January 1999 mountaineer Jamie Andrew and a climbing partner were trapped for five nights on the storm bound icy summit of a French mountain. The rescue, which was one of the most dramatic in the history of the Alps, came only hours too late to save

his partner. Jamie, despite suffering hypothermia and appalling frostbite, survived. Days later all four of his hands and feet were amputated.

For many this fate would have meant the end of all hope, but not for Jamie. Since losing his hands and feet Jamie has achieved some incredible feats.

He has learned to walk again, taken up skiing, run marathons and iron man triathlons, and remarkably, returned to climb once more in the mountains that he loves so much.

Burns Supper 2019 The David Boyd Pavilion at Balgray was the setting for the 2nd annual Minerva Burns Supper on Friday 18 January. The healthy audience of almost a hundred was treated to a splendid evening of fine food and high quality entertainment. After Chairman, Mel Scott (1979), introduced the performers, Hamish MacLeod (1973) piped in the haggis, which was then addressed by David Sturgeon (1979). After the Selkirk Grace, a lovely 3 course meal was enjoyed by all, with the highlight delicious McCaskie’s haggis, kindly donated by Nigel Ovens (1994). During the evening Sarah Gillan, accompanied

by Jenny Cunningham, charmed the audience with two beautiful love songs, while David Sturgeon took a less graceful direction with his song selection. A fascinating and knowledgable Immortal Memory was delivered by Gavin Findlay (1979) before Ian Rodger thrilled us all with his absorbing and spirited “Tam O’ Shanter”. Guy Robertson (1979) entertained us in his own inimitable fashion in his “Toast To The Lasses” while Myra Eadie’s

The most heartening aspect of the evening was the warm and friendly atmosphere in the room, with a healthy mix of male and female, older and not so old, which made up the audience. We hope to encourage more of our younger Academicals to come along next year.

Dr Joseph Caplan (1950) After reading Colin Mackay’s article in the last Minerva, Dr Caplan has kindly sent us the following:“Minerva Winter 2019 arrived recently and brought memories back.

Colin Mackay, who is about a dozen years younger than me, is accurate with the uniform problem and I can add a bit.

Looking at the pictures, we were a scruffy lot. The School asked any Academicals for rugby uniforms. The photo of the 1st XV shows different blue jerseys, and different types of socks. At least 8 of the lads were my age, about 15, and really too young for 1st XV Rugby.

I was good at writing, I worked for a newspaper during med school, have written articles for medical journals and kept excellent clinical notes in practice. I was second in English Highers at School, and I have a photographic memory, so written material stays.

We were a class of about twenty who won scholarships in 1944. We were Class A from Upper I to VI. Our compatriots were B. It was accepted we were the smart class, but politely it was Academia and Business. There was really no Upper School ahead of us. I recall some names of the older boys, Mearns, Kinloch, Hinshelwood, Paton and Burrell, but we led the pack. If you can imagine a snake swallowing an egg, that was the impact.

Initially we sat on benches for Assembly in the Hall, but as numbers increased, we were squished tightly. The front was Lower School, with their staff, and the masters sat at our half. Every Monday was the School Psalm, PS 121, and the Lord’s Prayer every day. The building was rigidly divided. The eastern end was Lower School and we were the west. The staff rooms were equally divided. All masters wore gowns, and the Rector, Mr Muirie, a mortarboard. The classrooms were labelled by subject for the first few years, so we went from room to room and the old names painted above the doors remained for many years. As the school expanded, that tradition dropped.

About 1947-8, the School roll was about 5-600, mainly Lower School, and they bought Mirrlees Drive. To keep us out of mischief, we spent time moving desks and equipment.

We thought the School would have to build, and have to knock down the old janitor’s house, build on the playground, or do both. We were obviously right.

KA had always been a School for boys from upper-middle-class families in a tight area of the West End and the boys went on to marry each-others sisters.

We came from all over Glasgow, and were not wealthy. I lived in Hillhead and my father had a small store another boy’s father drove a tram. We were determined to get to University, and the School had to maintain academic standards.

I was always interested in social history, so I responded when Mr Hiscock, a history teacher, told us to read the newspapers of our parent’s birth year. I read the Glasgow Herald 1894 avidly. The most striking thing was the sense of unbridled optimism. Gladstone had just retired, and the articles basically said “We have done wonders in this 19th century. We know the poor have problems, but we have done so much, how wonderful the next century will be.

European nations see the absolute folly of war.” I wondered if the writers realised what happened after 20 years.

One day I found initials and 1927 carved into an old desk.

Apart from the fact the boy probably got strapped for his handiwork, I thought If he went forward 20 years how would he feel at School in 1947?

In fact, he’d feel at home. The syllabus was Latin for two years, and then you could drop it for Science (Most did|).

The French textbook had two bratty children, Lucille and Gaston, who went to movies with Charlie Chaplin. I can read and speak French, but my aural ability is very poor. I can’t blame the staff. We had to pass the highers, and it was a written, not oral, exam. When I was in Quebec, I was told I stuttered. This was due to trying to match gender etc.

People don’t talk like that.

The June plays were Gilbert and Sullivan, or Shakespeare using scripts from before the War. After two years, it was geography or History. The gym was run by and ex-sergeant and there were now showers there. Non-starters in the curriculum included anything involving social studies or hygiene.

By 1950, when I left KA, there was a mass exodus to Canada and Australia starting in 1948 and continued for a decade. Over 30% of Britain’s doctors emigrated, creating a permanent problem for the NHS. It’s strange looking back after three quarters of a century, that some things haven’t changed. I recall reading that in May 1940, Churchill had three choices: surrender to the Germans and be invaded, or try and declare peace and cut a deal with Hitler, or abandon those ideas and fight. He picked the third, fortunately.

Kelvinside managed to overcome this period and survived.”

Professor Lorne Crerar (1972), CBE

Congratulations to Scott who won his first cap for Scotland in August against France. There will be much more about Scott’s World Cup journey in the next edition of Minerva.

Professor Lorne Crerar, Chairman of Harper Macleod, has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Birthday 2019 Honours List for his contribution to “economic and community development”.

Professor Crerar, co-founder of the firm, has had an illustrious career in both the legal profession and public service, not least in his role as Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise since 2012.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been awarded a CBE and honoured to be recognised for making a contribution to economic and community development in Scotland, which is something I am passionate about. I firmly believe that economy and community are intrinsically linked and I have been fortunate to be in a position in which I could make that central to both my business and civic activities - in particular as Chairman of HIE which has a unique remit in that it integrates community and economy in everything it does.

“Receiving an honour such as this is in no small part down to the dedication and support of the people I have been fortunate to work with in all aspects of my career and I look forward to sharing this moment with my family and friends.”

The CBE is the highest ranking of Order of the British Empire honours, followed by an OBE (Officer) and then MBE (Member).

Earlier this year, Professor Crerar received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Legal Awards 2019, an award which also acknowledged his influence beyond the legal sector which has seen him carry out key roles in sport, academia and the public sector.

The Swim Experience Kelvinside Academy would like to welcome Dan Wallace who is launching the Swim Experience as an extra-curricular activity. This will be offered to students from S3 to S6 who might be interested in experiencing a brand new swimming programme. This will combine indoor and outdoor swimming sessions as well as classroom based learning and motivational talks.

He is also author of The Law of Banking in Scotland, and for over 20 years he was Chairman of the Discipline Panels for the SRU, European Rugby Cup and 6Nations, as well as being a Judicial Officer at four Rugby World Cups and part of the judicial team at the inaugural Rugby 7s tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Congratulations to David on his appointment as the next Dean of the Chapel Royal and the Dean of the Order of the Thistle. The following article appeared in the Glasgow Herald.

“An eminent theologian is to take on two new church roles serving the Queen. Rev Professor David Fergusson, from Glasgow, has been appointed by the Queen as the next Dean of the Chapel Royal and he will also become the Dean of the Order of the Thistle.

Professor Emeritus of Banking Law at the University of Glasgow, he has been appointed by the Scottish Government to undertake or contribute to a number of independent reviews, including: The Independent Review of Legal Services in Scotland 2018; the Enterprise and Skills Review 2017 which led to the creation of the Strategic Board for Enterprise and Skills in Scotland; the Independent Review of Regulation, Audit, Inspection and Complaints handling of public services in Scotland; the Independent Review of the Lending Code; and Chairman of the Housing Improvement Task Force.

In 2017 he was also appointed as co-chair of a new National Council of Rural Advisers, which delivered a report to the Scottish Government creating a blueprint for Scotland’s rural economy which has been adopted

by Scottish Government. Lorne was appointed to the Rural Economic Action Group tasked with developing Scotland’s Rural Economic Policy.

Rev Professor David Fergusson (1974) OBE

His new roles will mean he will be head of the 10 royal chaplains based in Scotland, and also take part in the annual ceremony of the Order of the Thistle at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh.

The appointment of Mr Fergusson, a royal chaplain since 2015 who last year retired as Principal of the University of Edinburgh’s New College, was announced by the Church of Scotland

Colin Crichton (1975)

Colin is Chairman of Lord’s Taverners in Scotland and is pictured below delivering the brand new mini bus to Park School in Kilmarnock. The specialises in helping children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. The new vehicle had been eagerly anticipated and the staff and pupils, were delighted to receive the keys to the 16-seater vehicle.

He said “I am very pleased to be succeeding Professor Iain Torrance as Dean of the Order of the Thistle, both of which are distinguished Scottish Institutions. It is an honour to serve the Queen and her family in this capacity, and I look forward to the time ahead.”

Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal of the University of Edinburgh, said of Mr Fergusson “To the role of Dean he will bring a sharp mind and also outstanding human qualities of reliability, faithfulness and efficiency.”

The specially adapted minibus will significantly boost the school’s ability to provide trips and allow learning away from the classroom. It will help the school safely and easily transport pupils to and from a range of educational, cultural, social and sporting activities, within the local community and further afield.

For the past 15 years Dan Wallace has been a passionate swimmer competing worldwide and winning medals for Scotland and Team GB at Olympic, World and Commonwealth level. Dan did most of his training here in Scotland and at the age of 18 attended The University of Florida for additional training and study. In April 2018 he retired from competitive swimming and is now enjoying a different role within the sporting community.

Charles qualified to represent Australia in the Aquathlon World Championship Finals (age group 40-44) in Fyn, Denmark July 2018, where he finished an amazing 19/32. Despite suffering an injury 4 weeks prior to the event. Charles also qualified for the 2019 Finals in Spain but had to withdraw due to the arrival of his baby son.

Congratulations to Sam who has just booked his third Shute Shield final in as many seasons since joining Warringah, the Sydney club once home to Gregor Townsend. He’s now in line to win a Super Rugby deal and soon becomes Aussie-qualified.

“Thomson eyes greater honours after becoming a Shuting star” An abrasive Scotsman has emerged as a contender to boost Australia’s Super Rugby stocks when the big player exodus starts after this year’s World Cup.

Warringah Rats Assistant Coach, Cameron Treelor, a former Super Rugby player himself, rated Sam Thomson as the best lock in the Shute Shield.

He made the observation after the Glasgow raised Thomson produced another high-quality performance for Warringah in their 28-23 win over Manly. “He has added so much strength to his ball carry, which makes him an attacking threat. He’s our lineout boss and his lineout reading in defence is very good. He’s got it all. It is just a matter of getting an opportunity”

My grandfather, Scott Younger (1865-1940) – Glasgow University, then working for Brown Macfarlane in Glasgow, was sent as a loss adjuster in 1906 to make an assessment of the damage, mainly from fire in the Russian quarter, that followed the San Francisco earthquake earlier that year. My father John McNeil Younger (Glasgow High School, playing second row alongside future Scottish rugby cap, John Bannerman, at the beginning of the early 1920s, with subsequent Bannerman family links to KA) played a part in the rescue efforts following the 1934 Bihar earthquake disaster.

This had some similarities in terms of liquefaction (think quicksand) to the most recent earthquake disaster in Indonesia at Palu on the island of Sulawesi. Father, also Glasgow University engineering, went to India in 1926 – sugar industry.

For myself, I was actively involved in a number of recovery projects in the years following the major tsunami driven disaster at Aceh, which took place on 26 December 2004 following a nearby Richter 9.0 offshore earthquake when the Australian tectonic plate edged northward. This was arguably the worst so far in the past hundred years.

I now find myelf looking at the earthquake triggered disaster at Palu of late September, where a strong earthquake caused a liquefaction landslide which set off a tsunami along the coast line. It is hard to think I was sitting in the Swiss Bel hotel on the bay front just two years ago at Palu following a visit to a mini hydro site some 15 km away.

Apart from cyclonic winds, typhoons or hurricanes, which Indonesia does not get – leave that to our neighbours the Philippines, Indonesia is prone to all the other major events – volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis, the last usually triggered from an offshore earthquake.

These all eventuate from the location of this seismically active archipelago of 17,000 islands, the result itself of many centuries of tectonic plate movements on the earth surface. How these movements take place was not so identified until about 70 years ago. Once upon a time,

Aceh (end 2004) 550 million years ago, all this land mass of Eurasia,, South America, South Africa and Australia was conjoined, called Gondwanaland.

Now the southern edge of the Indonesian archipalago is bounded by the major Australian plate which is very slowly pushing under the Indian plate. And then the north eastern part of the archipelago is affected by the edge of the Philippines plate, movements in which have been causing a number of earthquake events over the past year or so, earlier in Lombok, the next island to Bali, as well as Bali itself. Here the active volcano Mt Agung has been rumbling away,spewing some gas and ash over the past 15 months. Mt Agung really blew its top in 1963, one of the major eruptions of the 20th century. One thousand died and many survivors left the area, many of those remaining now part of the East Bali Poverty Project.

It is on the northern shoulders of Mt Agung that ‘my’ Poverty Project is located and more than once the people of the area have had recently to seek refuge away from their homes and one of the Lombok linked earthquakes caused damage to some 700 homes there, in some cases completely. But of the recent events, that at Palu is the most significant.

The earthquake here came as a great surprise and has claimed some 2,000 known lives, mostly buried in the liquefaction landslide, with several throusand others not yet accounted for.

Since the turn of the century there have been at least 6 notable earthquake and eruption events and those living in Indonesia are continually reminded of the forces of nature to balance the beautiful landscape that make up this archipelago and a tourism paradise.

Class of 1980 40th Reunion

OBITUARIES Sadly we have received notifications of the death of the following Academicals. The School and Club send their heartfelt condolences to their families during this difficult and sad time.

Harry Abram (1941) died peacefully at home on 7 August 2019.

Ian Caplan (1952) died on 28 May 2019. Ian’s brother, Dr Joseph Caplan (1950) has given us the following information “ He obtained a scholarship in 1946, and was the Dux in 1952. Immediately after graduation he was asked to teach at KA, to fill a personnel lack in Modern Languages. He taught for several years before moving to the public system.

He described the odd sensation of being on firstname terms with colleagues in the staff-room, when they had been “Sir” a few years before!

He finished as Vice-Principal at Hamilton Academy.

He had a remarkable flair for languages, being fluent in French, German, Russain, Hebrew and Arabic, with 5 different alphabets! After retirement, he became a bridge enthusiast, travelling to conventions around Europe untillness limited his activities.

David Howat (1981) who passed away on 3 March 2019.

Ian King (1957) who passed away on 25 April 2019.

William Watt McKean (1956) died peacefully at home on 4 June 2019.

Graham Alastair Wintersgill (1978) died suddenly at home on Thursday 28 March. 2019.

Iain Roxburgh Young (1957) died suddenly but peacefully on Friday 8 February.

Kenneth William Linton Phillips (1962) passed away peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow, on the morning of the 14 February 2017.

Ken was the owner of his own chartered accounting business which had been both a passion and burden to him for 30 years.

A keen sailor, Ken, took most opportunities to spend a few hours on the water but sadly his time on the water shortened as the years progressed.

Ken is survived by his son Martin and had just become a grandad for the first time to Aria who was born on the 13 February 2017.
