Welcome from the Rector Please accept my very warm welcome to the first Minerva of the new academic year. The 2017/18 Session was an extremely busy one at the School, with the opening of the new Wilderness Campus being a real highlight (not to mention the famous alpaca visit!).

I see no sign of KA’s energy and ambition slowing down this year. The development of a new, and sector leading, Innovation School onsite at Kirklee Road will undoubtedly grab the headlines in the months ahead. However, in the meantime, I am sure you will enjoy reflecting on the articles and photos that follow, which capture some of the extraordinary things that go on at our School on a daily basis.

Our Classrooms

Kelvinside Academy has opened a new Wilderness Campus in the Cairngorms National Park, thanks to a generous sixfigure donation from former Rector, John Duff.

The launch of the Wilderness Campus is part of a wide-ranging educational strategy being implemented throughout the school which seeks to add genuine breadth and innovation to the curriculum.

Rector Ian Munro said “We are indebted to John Duff. His generosity will play a defining role in the education of our pupils for generations to come.

“Mr Duff has travelled and explored all of his adult life – there are only two countries in the world he has not set foot in. His spirit of adventure will form the bedrock of the curriculum at our Wilderness Campus.

“A growing body of educational research provides a clear rationale for working with youngsters in the outdoors. Doing so brings the curriculum alive, it aids an understanding of the natural environment and related issues of sustainability, and it supports the development of confidence and resilience through adventure and expedition. Indeed, I believe a significant part of learning and growth should happen outside the classroom.”

Situated in Strathdon, just two miles from the Lecht Ski Centre, the campus will give KA pupils yearround access to mountain ranges, glens, forests and rivers. A full time Head of Outdoor Education and Learning instructor, Miss Bex Currie, has also been appointed to head-up the campus.

She said: “My new role has an important part to play in this digital climate. Kids don’t play outside anymore and often struggle to think outside the box. They’re consumed by smart phones, video games and social media. Outdoor education provides opportunities for pupils to guide their own learning, develop critical thinking skills, fitness, and help ensure the health and wellbeing of pupils.”

The school has converted a hotel with extensive outbuildings into dormitories, teaching spaces, group catering facilities and relaxation areas. An associated bothy is being renovated into a classroom and field lab for use by Biology and Geography departments.

The new campus and appointment of Bex Currie will support existing co-curricular activities such as Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and Combined Cadet Force (CCF) field trips, and with art retreats and writing weekends in the pipeline, the campus will enrich the School’s traditional subject offering.

The John Duff Lodge can sleep up to 28 people and is available for rent to the KA community. You can see a video show round of the lodge on the website.

Robot Invasion

There was no peace and quiet at Kelvinside Academy this summer, instead, there was all-out robot war.

More than 20 youngsters from schools across Scotland took part in our second NuVu summer tech camp where pupils designed and built their own robots, and it all culminated in an epic ‘battlebotics’ contest.

During the two-week immersive course, aimed at stretching imaginations and inspiring creativity, pupils explored concepts of physics, electronics, and engineering. As well as robotics, a Mixed Reality Gaming studio was on offer. Here pupils spent two weeks creating innovative augmented reality video games using Unity3D. The summer tech camp, which is the only one of its kind in Europe, is part of our exclusive partnership with the world’s leading innovation school NuVu. We are working together to challenge the boundaries of traditional education.

Under the guidance of coaches from renowned American institutions, MIT and Harvard, robotics pupils have gone through the full design process: researching, conceptualizing, innovating, designing, and making using digital fabrication tools. The gaming pupils learnt how to program, create 3D models and explore the design implications of AR. Alongside the game design, pupils had to conceptualize a strong narrative for the game and flex their digital art skills creating the graphics.

Kelvinside pupil Finn o’Brien (S1) said; “I’m still shocked that we’ve made our very own robot. This is definitely the highlight of my summer.

“I got to use laser cutters, learned about coding and how to make my robot parts with a 3D printer. It didn’t feel like school because we were all working together and had a lot more freedom to explore our ideas.”

Rector Ian Munro said; “I’ve watched as pupils arrived here with what was essentially a blank sheet of paper. Throughout the short two-week camp, they’ve worked with design experts and each other to create robots. That’s pretty cool.

“There has been an incredible buzz around the school this summer.

“Pupils were pushed out of their comfort zone to explore some really complex ideas and challenged to come up with meaningful solutions. It has been hugely rewarding to see how inspired our pupils became as they discovered and developed their own unique creative process.”

“Timetables, exams and classrooms still have their place in education, but the system needs to be less restrictive. School should be a place where children have the freedom to collaborate and the opportunity to explore their own imagination.”

As part of our exclusive European partnership with NuVu, and our commitment to creative learning and innovation in education, we will welcome a NuVu fellow to our KA staff, who will lead immersive courses for Kelvinside Academy pupils throughout the academic year.

prize Giving new Era

Prize Giving provides an opportunity for the School community to come together to celebrate its young people, and as such, it is a very important event in the academic year. This year we moved the ceremony to a marquee at Balgray and it proved to be a wonderful venue for such a special occasion. Our Guest of Honour was Ms Helen Broadfoot, the first ever female pupil at Kelvinside Academy, who was also joined by her parents, former Rector John and wife Celia.

After a warm welcome from Chairman, Mr Donald Wilson, our school Captains Scarlett Green and Fergus Harvey invited prize winners up to receive their awards and trophies from Helen. The Rector’s address followed before Scarlett and Fergus shared their school memories and hopes for the future. There were a lot of hankies required!

Beautiful sunshine, friendship and KA family time made it a memorable day for all.

The marquee was also the venue for our Senior 6 Ball. Over 140 pupils, parents and teachers gathered on Friday evening to celebrate the ‘end of an era’ for our Class of 2018. We are very proud of this group of wonderful young people. Special thanks must be given to Ms Gallacher and Mrs Solman for organising such a wonderful evening for everyone.

Staff News We welcome Mrs Linda MacBeath to our Senior Leadership Team as she takes over from Andrew Dickenson as Head of Junior School. Formerly Acting Head of Colgrain Primary School in Helensburgh, Mrs MacBeath was born and raised in Dumbarton.

Educated at Keil School, where she was Head Girl, she completed a PGCE at Southampton University before beginning her teaching career in Manchester.

Mrs MacBeath then moved back to Scotland to teach at Lomond School in Helensburgh, before progressing to senior leadership posts at Cardross Primary School and Colgrain Primary School.

Mrs MacBeath brings to Kelvinside Academy an abundance of experience across both state and independent sectors, which no doubt has contributed to her proven and innovative track record in junior school leadership to date. She is passionate about lifelong learning, is a nationally recognised advocate of digital learning and also places huge importance on the role outdoor learning plays in the healthy development of children.

When not working, Mrs MacBeath enjoys theatre and the arts, skiing, and spending quality time with her husband, Alan, and daughter, Alice.

Farewell to staff KA was sad to say goodbye to three members of staff who have worked in the School for a combined 91 years. Alan Mulholland taught maths and computing at Kelvinside for 34 years, Sheena Crichton in Music for 29 years and Head of Faculty Joe Gilius who taught English for a total of 28 years.

Joe Gilius Joe’s passion for literature is tremendous and his ability to share and convey that passion is in part what makes him such a fantastic teacher. As Head of Faculty, Joe has overseen many changes to the curriculum and exam diet, as well as the introduction of Drama as a new subject to the department.

Throughout his years here Joe has, year in and year out, been responsible for the professional lighting of numerous plays and musicals. He was also responsible for the proof reading and organisation of the annual school publication The Chronicle for many years.

Alan Mulholland Kelvinside said a heartfelt goodbye to one of our longest serving members of staff, Mr Alan Mulholland, Deputy Head of MST Faculty, Maths teacher, Computing teacher and a sportsman of considerable abilities. Alans talent as a teacher was not only recognised within Kelvinside but also nationally, with his all-through computing courses being taken forward as an example of excellent practice.

Amongst former students he will undoubtedly be remembered for the quality of his lessons, as well as the respect and academic ambition he had for his charges.

Perhaps the older ones may even remember being trounced on the golf course or tennis court. Staff will have their own memories of Alan, not least of which are the many one liners that originated with him and have now become part of the common parlance within the school. No more “working other peoples’ bad ideas” for you now Alan instead you get the opportunity to work your own bad ideas!

Sheena Crichton Miss Sheena Crichton retires having been a valued member of the KA teaching team for 29 years. In addition to her music teaching she was also Head of PSE and for many years helped out with Wednesday afternoon games activities. She will be most remembered however, as an exceptional musical director for the numerous school shows in which she was involved. As many a pupil will testify - there was no-one better at whipping a chorus into shape than Miss Crichton! Her musical activities will not cease after life at KA as she is now taking on the role of pianist for dinners at the Trades Hall. Along with her passion for playing tennis retirement looks busy! We wish her all the best for the future.

Andrew Dickenson’s 10 years as Head of Junior School has come to an end as he has moved East to join Loretto.

Andrew’s drive for innovative teaching and his supportive leadership will be much missed by pupils, staff and parents alike. He took time to get to know every Junior School pupil, a knowledge demonstrated loudly each year as he commentated on sports day proceedings. His passion for the dramatic and ability to give every pupil a voice, will be much missed at the annual J6 Show. We wish him all the best in his new role - Loretto are very lucky to have him as their new Head of Junior School.

Also departed are Joan Dunseith (Chemistry teacher) and Hannah Burleigh (Junior School teacher). We wish them well in their new posts.

Alpacas

All our pupils sitting Nat 5, Higher or Advanced Higher Biology were offered a unique stress busting session - a hug with an alpaca! Eight woolly alpacas enjoyed exploring our playing fields and S4-S6 exam pupils enjoyed a welldeserved breather in the open air stroking these beautiful animals. Keeping news of eight alpacas under wraps was never going to work so most of the senior school came out to meet Amadeus, Calvin, Kuno, Ignatius, Artemis, Milo, Apollo and Balthazar. Huge thanks to Bob from BobCat Alpacas for his patience, enthusiasm and knowledge. It was a memorable day.

Launch of Sailing Club Pupils have access to the School’s yacht ‘Level Best’ which is berthed at the James Watt Dock, Greenock.

Biology Teacher Miss Susie Edmond is a qualified skipper and she has established a weekly sailing club to help develop pupil skills and knowledge to a level that more pupils can make the step up to sailing the 35ft Level Best.

“Jibe, Rudder, Reach, Tack, Kicker. Not only do we now know what all these words mean, there are so many more sailing terms that we can understand, after just 9 weeks of fun. Last term we went sailing at Bardowie Loch every Tuesday after school, with Miss Edmond, Mr Cuthbertson and Mr Munro.

Week one, we learned how to rig up all the Pico Boats on dry land at school, and then learnt all the different parts of the boat. The next week we were down at the loch, and had to rig up the Picos on our own.

force a capsize, which wasn’t hard! Somehow we had to pull ourselves up on to the centre board on the bottom of the boat which was now out of the water. Our weight on the centre board turned the boat the right way up and we successfully achieved what was asked of us.

Week nine, we were allowed to sail all the way up to the end of the loch as we can properly control the rudder and the sail on our own. Learning how to sail has been so much fun and I can’t wait for next term’s sailing. Hopefully we can take the skills learnt on these small Pico boats and transfer them to the School’s yacht - Level Best - and try a proper life on the ocean wave”.

Week five, it came to capsizing. What would happen?

What do we do if we capsize? How do we fix it? All these questions were racing through our heads. But Miss Edmond kept us all calm and it was more fun than scary. The first thing we had to do was actually

Euro Champ We were proud of RMPS teacher, Mrs Nicola Mathews, nominated ‘Volunteer of the Day’ during her stint at the European Cycling Championships. Her role in athlete services placed her right in the middle of the Velodrome action where she witnessed Laura Kenny’s win first hand. She was interviewed about her experiences as a volunteer on the big screen after her nomination. What an amazing experience.

school Captains and prefects The outgoing Captains continued the tradition of ringing a bell in the Mall to publicly announce the names of the new captaincy team. We managed to live stream the action on Facebook this year but in case you missed it, here is the 2018/19 line up: The Captains are Amy Williams and Jameel Cathcart.

The Vice Captains are Sophie Dunlop, Hannah Sorbie, Cameron Russell and Jamie Campbell.

After the successful reintroduction of Senior 6 Prefects last year, the 2018/19 Prefect team has also been announced. Prefects are expected to act as positive role models throughout our KA community, by demonstrating the highest standards

of behaviour, attitude and appearance at all times.

The team appointed to support the leadership and captaincy teams in ensuring the smooth day to day running of the School are: Matthew Bryce, Sophia Carlin, Sasha Decker, Ava Gildea, Mia Haran, Nathan Harrison, Benny Hemphill, Fraser Jackson, Rory Jackson, Fern Laughlin, Adrian Lockhart, Eilidh MacPherson, Meg McGinness, Krishan Muir, Della Pirrie, Lewis Pocock, Zac Stringfellow, Eleanor Turner and Ross Wilson.

The Captains and Prefects will be wearing the specially designed ‘Owl’ pin to recognise their positions of responsibility.

ACAdEMIC ‘Research is creating new knowledge’ - Neil Armstrong Our collaborative and ground breaking partnership between the Junior School and the University of Glasgow Psychology Department continues to go from strength to strength. Professor Niamh Stack has continued to support our Junior 6 pupils in designing and undertaking their own independent research projects. Each pupil was challenged to design their own independent research project, create their own questions and conduct their own analysis in a project aimed to develop creativity, critical thinking, numeracy, literacy and communication skills and to develop analytical capability.

Some of the pupil’s independent questions this year included; •

Do people at KA think that supermarkets have sufficient gender neutral products in their stores?

•

Do sugar levels affect the way we behave, learn and work?

•

Does using social media affect the way you communicate?

Pupils have again exceeded our expectations in terms of their engagement, motivation, critical thinking and their presentation skills.

During the 2018/19 session, J6 teachers are aiming to collaborate more widely across the school community and beyond. On 19 September teachers Mrs Sheelagh Paterson and Mrs Alison McAllister have been invited to present a seminar at the Scottish Learning Festival, which takes place at the SECC, Glasgow. This is the annual conference & exhibition for the teaching profession in Scotland and attracts more than 4500 delegates over 2 days.

The KA Teachers’ seminar is already fully booked!

The J6 team have also been awarded a £3000 grant from the Royal Society to conduct some independent research. They will be investigating ‘How Sleepy is our School?’ Dr Heather Cleland Woods, University of Glasgow psychology lecturer and researcher into sleep, social media use and wellbeing in adolescents’, will join us to collaborate with pupils and staff.

Enterprising Tartan Tales

Golden Passport to Books

The Junior School has been recognised for their recent work on P4C, which is short for Philosophy for Children. P4C is about getting children to think and communicate well: to better think for themselves.

Congratulations to our S6 Young Enterprise Group ‘Tartan Tales’ whose members Esme Boyle & Sasha Nakhaei won Best Trade Fair Team at the 2018 Young Enterprise Awards.

Librarians Ms Shirley Tipping and Ms Susan McLay were delighted to acknowledge the outstanding reading efforts of Freya Murty (J6).

Freya is the first pupil to complete the Golden Reading Passport. The passport was designed by current S1 pupil Ivy Gerber and can only be started once pupils reach J6 and have completed the other Reading Passport Levels 1, 2 & 3 beforehand.

This approach to learning focuses on teaching children how to create their own philosophical questions.

They concentrate on one question for the focus of group discussion – for example ‘is it ever ok to steal?’. The teacher supports the children in their thinking, reasoning and questioning, ensuring each child has a voice and is listened to. After the discussion the pupils and teacher reflect on the quality of their thinking, reasoning and participation and suggest how they could improve.

Only by making P4C a regular activity can children develop their skills and understanding over time. KA Junior School have been awarded the SAPERE Bronze Award which is for schools that have made a commitment to P4C as a whole school and started on the SAPERE training pathway.

Congratulations to all the teachers and pupils who have worked exceptionally hard to gain this recognition – especially Mrs Lynne McColl who is leading the project.

The prize recognised how they had managed to overcome obstacles in creating their product – a beautiful children’s story book which was written and illustrated by themselves.

Freya not only completed all the levels but decided to challenge herself further by designing and making her own version of the Golden Passport. Whilst choosing to remain loyal to the original book genres and tasks created

by Ivy, Freya combined all these elements in an innovative and imaginative way to produce a truly inspirational Golden Passport.

The Reading Passport scheme is run by the library to encourage reading for pleasure within the Junior School, and to nurture the pupils into being confident, independent readers. We are incredibly proud of Freya, not just for being the first pupil to finish the Golden Passport, but mostly for her commitment and overall joy of reading.

S4 Work Experience with a difference…

Fire-breathing Dragon Following on from the ‘Engineering the Future for Girls’ Summer School, Ashanti Magoma (S4) was invited back for further work experience in the Engineering Faculty at the University of Strathclyde.

Her time spent working in the lab gave her a good taste of just how much manual labour can go into engineering experiments. Ashanti was set the challenge of considering potential engineering processes that would explain how a dragon breathes fire. She had some questions about how the dragon would avoid burning itself with the fire and how it might make the fuel for the fire. This led to midweek adventures which included fire safety and mechanical engineering (design of teeth shaped to

support desired fire dynamics) and chemical and process engineering (separating and forming fuel for fire-breathing from dietary fat). A memorable week featuring a great mix of data analysis and messy experiments!

Air Traffic Control Experience My week of work experience began promptly at 6am on Monday 18 January, on a wild winter’s morning on the Isle of Lewis. I was woken by my alarm clock ringing in my gran’s house where I was staying. I caught the 7.40am workers’ bus across the island to Stornoway.

This was a daily round trip of 60 bumpy miles but I didn’t mind as I was so excited to be actually going to an airport to work.

Once at the airport terminal I was issued with my security pass and escorted to the Air Traffic Control tower, where I would spend most of my time.

The ATC tower at Stornoway handles roughly 40 commercial and private aircraft movements a day. The control room itself was amazing, with the 360-degree slanted windows showcasing stunning views across the airfield. I was introduced to the controller, Andreas Svensson, a Swedish former pilot of ten years.

Throughout much of my time, Andreas taught me the controls and everything I would need to know about Air Traffic Controlling for my week. This was a dream come true for me, as I have always loved aviation, and hope to become a pilot in the future. I managed to gain some insights into different possible pathways into working in the world of aviation.

During my second day I was given a tour of the HM Coastguards S-92 helicopter stationed at Stornoway Airport. The co-pilot gave me a tour around the aircraft. He explained the purpose of each component, and I could see how the winchmen operate in tough wintery conditions hanging from the side of a

helicopter. Then I was given the opportunity to sit in the captain’s seat and turn on the APU - allowing power to flow to the helicopters systems so that the pilot could take me through how the heli is flown from the pilot’s prospective.

After my fascinating helicopter tour, I spent the rest of that afternoon in Stornoway’s control tower observing the professionals at work and picking up many of the complicated communication phrases and their meanings.

Day three began by being driven around the airfield, looking at its taxiways and runways in one of the airside operations vehicles. This was one of my highlights as it is an extremely rare opportunity to be allowed to be in a car on the runway. It was an amazing experience as it is hard to gauge the size of runways when you are in a plane. In a car, they seem a hundred times bigger!

After clearing the runway of debris and scaring off birds from the airfield (using a five-thousand-pound laser) it was time to head back to the control tower.

I managed to spend my last two hours, just before my night-time flight home, in the tower with Andreas. He even gave me the flight strip belonging to my flight that the controllers use to keep track of the aircraft and promised he would give my flight the best clearance direct to Glasgow!

This was one of the most interesting and exciting weeks of my life. After this amazing experience, I cannot wait to begin my career in aviation!

ExpREssIvE ARts The Junior 6 Show - Pirates of the Curry Bean In choosing to perform a musical comedy by Craig Hawes for the second year running, there was a risk that this year’s cohort would fail to match the standard set by the performers of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies in 2017. However, with a wealth of talent in the year group, it was decided that the best way to show this off would be to have two performances and a dual cast, substantially different on each night. The gamble – if that’s what it was – seems to have paid off. With two dress rehearsals and two performances under their belt – and hugely positive feedback from all audiences - the performers were bemoaning the fact that their West End run had to be curtailed to make way for the Easter holiday!

One might think that a show based on the antics of sailors and pirates, would lead to girls being cast in

marginal roles. At a time when one of Europe’s largest budget airlines blamed its huge gender pay gap on the fact “that pilots tend to be men while lower paid cabin staff are women” it was refreshing to see Kelvinside Academy buck this trend! So, for instance, Captain Cod was played on both nights by girls, firstly by Imogen Gillan whose height, poise and deprecating manner was a great foil to the bumbling, overgrown child that was Admiral Hornhonker, played by Matixa Maplethorpe with great gusto. On the second night, Connie Speirs offered a completely different interpretation of the Captain’s character, a shrill, foot-stamping, no-nonsense bossy-boots, contrasting wonderfully with Stuart Allam’s diffident and goofy Hornhonker. The show also had, as its central character, not a pirate or a sailor but a hard-working

single mum, Pearl Periwinkle. Pearl was played by Faith Gerber and Freya Murty, capturing excellently both the ferocious temper and the softer side of this leading lady.

But if you came to see a good old-fashioned (ooh, aar, me hearties) pirate baddie, then you were not disappointed. Cruz Taylor and Riley Dempster took it in turns to strut around the stage as Captain Redbeard, both loving the notoriety and enjoying the audiences’ response. The group pirate and sailor scenes were slick and well-paced and kept the story moving along nicely. A hallmark of a Craig Hawes musical is the comedy duo and this play had two! First there were the health and safety inspectors, Mr Wally (Mackenzie Craig) and Mr Pratt (Joshua Hinds – sadly too unwell to perform), who delighted audiences with their riskaverse approach to their jobs so that even swords had to be cut down to size to make them safe! Then there was the double act of Scuttle (Adriana Alves & Carlo Milne) and Slack (Cruz Irvin & Adam McManus): the jokes were obvious, the toilet humour very basic, but the comic timing of the actors made their scenes

delightful interludes between the action of the piece.

As usual, one of the most enjoyable things to witness was the way in which some actors embellish their parts with additional features that have not been coached or taught, they have done it because they have brought a thinking approach to the role and because they want every moment to be as convincing as it can be. So it was great to see the opening scene where the spirited Liza (Erin Bratt and Daisy Dalziel) and Jack (Charlie Byers and Barath Selvendran) Periwinkle play-fought with real broom sticks, energetically bashing their sticks against each other while moving about and sustaining a dialogue – wonderful. There was also Loopy Louie, Captain Redbeard’s sidekick, played on both nights by Annastacia Hinde. A watchful member of the audience would have noticed the way Annastacia acted throughout, not just investing her lines with a huge variation of expression but also responding to other members of the cast in terms of body language and facial expression – an impressive performance.

One of the best things about the most recent musicals has been the way that the whole cast has been able to occupy the floor space at the same time to sing and dance in unison with carefully choreographed synchronisation. It is partly these elements of the show that give those who may have small speaking parts the chance to shine by contributing to the ‘wow’ factor that comes with these centre-pieces. The costumes and props both add hugely to the spectacle and Mr Andrew Dickenson, in his last show as director, rightly paid tribute to Mrs Sheelagh Paterson and Mrs Alison McAllister who, in the last five years have done “everything else” around these productions and have been absolutely instrumental in their success.

The Junior 1 Show - ‘Beauty and the Beast from the East’ The Junior 1’s put on a great performance of their own play ‘Beauty and the Beast from the East’. Not only did they come up with the adapted story themselves, they also sang songs from the Greatest Showman and even an old favourite by George Michael. The Beast, played by Omid Najafian, was appropriately scary and luckily the Gingerbread Girl, played

by Lola Rodgers, saved the day! The children thoroughly enjoyed performing their show to their mums, dads, grannies and grandads.

Art Art teachers Mrs Jane Hardy and Mrs Anne Gallie were overwhelmed by the number and quality of entries in this year’s 3D Art Competition. Open to pupils from SP-S3, entries had to have a 3D element and use recycled items to fit the theme of ‘Endangered’. The winner was S1 pupil Harris Buchanan with his beautiful Humming Bird Cone.

More artistic recognition is due to S1 pupils Benson Murray and Arun Tsang who were shortlisted in this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Schools Poster Competition.

This was a notable achievement as the competition receives thousands of entries from schools all over Scotland. Their posters were on display at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh over the summer.

Glasgow Music Festival Success Once again Kelvinside Academy had participants from age 3-16 at the Glasgow Music Festival. Many of our pupils were highly placed in their chosen classes. Well done to all.

Their team won silver medals after losing 3-1 to East District in the final. Well done girls.

Huge congratulations to Lily Evans Haggerty (S3) who was 2nd in the Mini London Marathon. Lily won both the individual silver medal and team gold medal in the Girls U15 section. Lily’s amazing run was supported by her team mates achieving 5th & 8th.

Huge congratulations to Remy Cho (S5) who has signed a 2-year contract with Spanish Laliga football team Club Deportivo. We wish you good luck with your footballing career.

Her recent running achievements also included winning the Girls U15 Scottish Cross Country Championship, as well as the Glasgow Schools’ S3 cross country race by 200m.

spoRt HANDBALL Club Championships and Cup Final Triumphs J6/SP - Champions We had 4 teams in action with 3 of our 4 teams being unbeaten over the course of the day, so it came as no surprise that both our boys and girls teams were crowned champions.

S1/2 girls – Runner up After a strong performance, and narrowing the gap on several occasions our S1/2 girls finished runners up after a close match v Tryst, final score 16-20.

S1/2 boys – Runner up Mixed fortunes for our boys but the match ended in a 3 goal defeat to Troon who have been a strong team all season. Having closed the gap to make it all square with 90 seconds to go, Troon made a spirited final push to secure victory.

S3 girls – Runner up The girl’s format was slightly different with 3 teams competing in a round robin style competition. A brave performance v Tryst - our best yet and a solid game v Troon saw the S3 girls also finish runner up.

S6 boys - Champions The boys’ final school match ever – and appropriately it was against arch rivals Tryst. Trailing at half time the boys had to start to close the gap soon into the second half. This is exactly what they did. An outstanding team performance and a comfortable lead by 6 saw the boys secure victory. They definitely saved the best till last. The boys also won the Schools School Championships beating Deans CHS in a close fought final.

SP – Primary Schools National Champions!

A mixed J6 and SP team had high hopes ahead of the Primary National Championships. Team work and communication proved essential and our team topped their group’s table. Two wins stood between us and victory. We were up against a strong Troon team in the final and it was goal for goal but a last second wonder shot from Angus Semple (J6) secured our victory. Champions! Over the day we scored 45 goals and only conceded 9 - well played!

Hamish Bottomley GB Selection Hamish Bottomley (S6) was selected for the GB Mens U18 team which travelled to Vienna in August to compete at the U18 Handball European Championships.

Hamish was one of two goal keepers in the team.

Hamish enjoyed a very successful season as he was also part of the Glasgow Mens team as they became British Handball Champions and subsequently earned a place in Europe next season. Hamish is travelling to Prague in September for Glasgow’s first European match which is against Talent Robstav MAT Plzen. This will be a huge learning curve as the European teams are all professional – unlike any of the British teams.

First Handball Era Comes to an end…

Where do I even start to sum up the S6 handball achievements? We all know how this story starts so let’s go with some stats. Over the past 6 years our S6s have each played 8297 minutes of competitive Handball, scored 3154 goals, won 9 Scottish titles, have had 9 involved in GB set up and 18 in Scotland programs.

From the group that has pioneered and spearheaded Kelvinside’s Handball program we have our first Handball leavers. They have been outstanding, one of the schools’ most successful sports teams led by Captain Euan Brady.

We have been lucky enough to travel the world visiting Iceland, Ireland, Spain, Hungary, Germany, Lithuania, Sweden and England. Throughout it all we have trained hard and have developed team spirit others can only dream of.

The boys; despite a steady start the boys often found themselves the bridesmaids but never the bride. A mixed team title in S2 was their first taste of success but the next victory was 2 years in the making and came in the shape of Scottish Schools’ Champions in S4. The S6 boys rounded off their KA Handball career with a double victory at the Scottish Schools’ Championships and were crowned Cup Champions – without a doubt their finest performance. The past 6 years wouldn’t have been the same without Zander Geddes scoring much needed goals, Hardie Brown taking total control in the middle, Ben Geary and

Keen climber olivia Rowbotham (SP) has been selected to join the Scottish Youth Development Squad and recently enjoyed a training weekend at Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, with a mixture of competition and coaching over two long, challenging but fun days.

Congratulations to Dominic Ferrie (S4) who played in the Braehead Pairs Competition last term. He was partnered with Ross Paterson (a member of the 2016 Scottish Champions curling team). They had a great run and made it to the final. It is great to see a Kelvinside Curler playing at such a high level.

Fergus Harvey making a welcome return, Jack Porter’s consistency, Hamish Bottomley making saves at the most crucial times despite having outfield aspirations and all being kept under control by fast break king and fearsome defender Euan Brady.

The girls; still part of the KA Handball family but they only had schools’ competitions lately as their weekend league and cup competitions ended after S4. One of their greatest achievements was winning the treble in S4, Scottish Schools’, National League and Cup champions. We also had 5 girls playing for GB in S5 in Lithuania last August at the European Championships.

Our girl leavers: Cameron Faulds, our terrifying line player who can score from anywhere; Scarlett Green, Miss Versatility, a back or a winger and has played with either hand; Hannah McGregor our goalie Ninja; Monica Sloan, the only leftie; Chloe Gibson, Miss Reliable and when on form is unstoppable and finally Colette Elliott, who tells it like it is while organising everyone from the middle.

The 13 Handballers leave behind an incredible legacy.

As well as playing, studying and getting involved in all areas of Kelvinside life our S6s have given back by spending time with our younger teams coaching and passing on their wisdom and experience.

Ida Ewald (S2) came second overall and was placed 1st in her age class U14 at the Huntly Open Championships in classic style on a demanding 5km course in the Clashindarroch Forest against the best Scottish skiers in her age class.

Ida also came 14th among strong competition from Norway, Switzerland and Germany at the 4km Skate Race held in Ulrichen (Switzerland), which was also held as the European Ski Marathon Championships (Cross Country Skiing).

Following her success she has been invited to join the British Nordic Development Squad.

tRIps Recently I travelled to the European Space Agency in Belgium to take part in a course on ‘Space Robotics in the classroom’. This was a fantastic opportunity to learn about and develop unique and innovative methods of using Robotics in our classrooms at Kelvinside. The two-day programme was attended by Science and Technology teachers and leaders from across Europe. The ESA takes pride in ensuring that it covers all EU countries and this was represented in the group which included colleagues from Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Poland and Portugal.

We were presented with a variety of tasks over the two-day course and these centred around space exploration to Mars. We were tasked to build a robotic Mars exploration rover that could negotiate its way around the surface of the planet and also take accurate readings to send back to earth.

Working in teams, we used Lego Mindstorms kit to create a Mars rover by attaching various sensor and motors to a common programmable box. The programming system used was very powerful and also very accessible for pupils. The teams were encouraged to try and fail and try again until we had detailed plans to complete our task.

As you can imagine, there was a large variety of robotic rovers produced and the atmosphere created

between teachers was supportive and encouraging.

It was fabulous to see how such a conceptually difficult task could be broken down to problem solving, teamwork and innovation. The learning process offered many challenges which meant failure was inevitable at parts and so resilience and perseverance were required throughout. These are exactly the type of tasks and skills that pupils should be carrying out to develop their innovative and questioning skills.

During the trip, we also visited the European Space Centre which focused on the developing role that the ESA now has in space exploration. We were able to simulate walking on the moon via some high tech equipment and Virtual Reality headsets. We were also invited to test our concentration levels in a simulator that mimics the feeling of flying a space shuttle that is out of control. These experiences, the depth of knowledge of the staff, and the fantastic life size models and memorabilia really encouraged enthusiasm for space travel and innovation.

These invaluable experiences will help us to implement new and innovative teaching at Kelvinside and encourage pupils to ask the big questions in Science and Technology.

Partille Cup KA Handball set an ambitious target of taking four teams to the Partille Cup in Sweden, the biggest sports event outside the Olympics! Our teams were to join 12,000 other players and experience a sport tournament like no other. We entered B11, G11, B13 and G14, taking players from J6 up to S3 all guided and mentored by our team of S6 coaches. Playing outdoors and living in a school had its challenges but this novel way to live and play certainly did not phase our players. There was mixed success for our teams but we did come away with two wins and a draw which makes us one of the more successful Scottish teams at Partille.

The standard and handball experience abroad is something KA and Scotland certainly are aiming to match.

Massive thank you to Mark, our guest coach and our S6 pupils (Euan Brady, Cameron Faulds, Fergus Harvey and Jack Porter) as without them the trip wouldn’t have been possible.

CCF CCF Annual Inspection The last week of school was a busy one. The first prize giving ceremony of the week took place at Balgray with CCF Annual Inspection. It was an outstanding presentation led by RSM Reagan Dempster. We were very proud of all our KA cadets.

CCF 2018 Annual Camp, Barry Buddon Another year flies by and before anybody knew it we were back on the bus heading to the one and only Barry Buddon training area. CCF at Kelvinside Academy never has, and never will cease to challenge, discipline and (most importantly) amuse myself and fellow pupils. Annual Camp is the grand finale to the end of a long year of both school and CCF. With exams over, assignments complete and looking for distractions from the much-anticipated results day, a camp such as this is the perfect escape. However, it is no relaxing holiday lounging in the sun, and under the firm command of RSM Reagan Dempster (S6) and the solid management of the other 6th years, you can be sure that it was not an easy week.

This year’s annual camp ran excellently and to plan, and thanks to Cpt Ferguson, Mme Mullan and 2LT Watts (who are the stable foundation of the CCF camps), was the most enjoyable camp I have attended. Being a part of Kelvinside Academy’s CCF is an honour, we marched around camp with our heads high, proud of who we are - and our behaviour and manners did not go unnoticed even by the RSM of the camp! Not only did we out-perform the other schools on the base, but also in the field in activities planned to push us out of our comfort zones and test our abilities to work together as a squad.

When we arrived we headed straight to our billets (dormitories) for the long week ahead and right away

we met our ‘rivals’ for the camp, Mill Hill School from London. The banter went back and forth until one day we got a little fed up of their gloating about the World Cup. So, on Wednesday we challenged them to a real game of 11-a-side football, Scotland vs England. Referee 2LT Watts organised the game on camp football pitches and we agreed on the time. Both schools showed and met in the middle of the pitch for the national anthems. The game started and within the first 3 minutes it was 1-0 to the Scots! At half time the score was 3-0 with everyone playing their part in the game. The game finished on 6-1 to us, and although Scotland didn’t make it to the World Cup, in our eyes we still beat the English at football!

The section commanders and section 2IC’s (second in command) presented fieldcraft lessons to the younger cadets to bring their knowledge up to scratch and to the level that RSM Dempster expected. After Cpt Ferguson was satisfied with everyone’s weapons handling we went on to team building exercises with 2LT Watts, which I can assure you definitely brought out the competitive KA spirit. We were then introduced to an unorthodox twist on the game ‘capture the flag’ where the 6th years would be hunting each section, while each section had to defend… their pineapple! Walking back to the billets I noticed that none of the 6th years, or 2LT Watts were with us. I alerted the rest of the section to keep an eye out and from nowhere came 20 water balloons flying through the air. Their

target? Us. However, we managed to turn the ambush around and it backfired quite significantly for 2LT Watts who ended up drenched in water.

Victory was ours.

Next day was Range Day. Kelvinside were granted permission to do an advanced shoot, meaning smaller targets with less time to think. Despite the difficulty of the shoot, every single person passed - some just barely and some with flying colours.

After a long day we retired back to the billets looking forward to the next day’s round robin.

This round robin consisted of 6 different stands; the stalk, obstacle course, indoor range and first aid, navigation, paintball and a talk from a wellrespected Para Captain. The stalk challenged us to get from one side of a field to the other without being spotted by sentries - gathering information from them at the same time. The officers were stunned by our performance! The obstacle course was a series of walls, tunnels and rope swings.

Working together as a team to overcome each obstacle wasn’t easy but yet again the officers were amazed at how well we did and said it was the best they had seen that week.

Thursday saw us ready earlier than usual, geared up with our sleeping bags and roll mats packed.

We were sleeping out in the field and it was time for the 36-hour exercise to commence. Once we had a harbour set up, we were assigned to different recce patrols (reconnaissance patrols).

The recce patrols went smoothly and yet again the officers were surprised by our professionalism

and standards in the field. Being the IC (section commander) for my section, I reported back to the RSM and debriefed with the rest of the IC’s before we combined together for a joint recce mission to scout out enemy positions. Despite a slight hiccup with the UOTC (universities’ officer training corps) advancing towards us, everyone reacted correctly and efficiently and followed their commander to safety. Once all the data and info had been collected at HQ everyone retired to their beds.

The next morning, we armed up and prepared for a full-on attack on the enemy positions. Once the mission was complete we returned to camp for the last parade.

The last parade is renowned for cracking even the toughest nut. Everyone checked their dress was immaculate as we were inspected by the RSM of the camp - who made every single person on the parade smile as he knew they wouldn’t last long.

Once inspection had finished, the RSM gave a speech telling us how impressed he was and how grateful we should be to be a part of the CCF at Kelvinside Academy. Up next was Cpt Ferguson who gave words on each 6th year standing in uniform for the last time. By this point most people could feel a lump in their throat. The 6th years, lead by RSM Dempster, marched past the entire company for their final march pass as a tribute to the school.

They marched off into the sunset - their time was over.

As my 6th year approaches, I only hope this year can live up to the standards set by them. Barry Buddon, prepare for our return - for it will be glorious.

140th Anniversary Capital Appeal In the last three years we have seen significant advances in the strategic development of our School. These advances have not only allowed the School to keep pace with the ever evolving challenges of education, they have enabled the School to get ‘ahead of the curve’ and create a distinctive KA curriculum.

After the success of our second Tech Camp this summer, in collaboration with NuVu, the world’s leading innovation School from Boston, MA we will be incorporating the Innovation School approach into our ‘routine’ curriculum in the 2018/19 session in partnership with NuVu, who have agreed to send a Fellow to work with us in Glasgow for two years.

As such, Kelvinside will be at the forefront of educational development in Scotland. In the short term we have transformed some existing space to allow us to launch this exciting programme, but, in the longer term we need to develop our School infrastructure by building an extension.

The cost of phase one of the extension is £2.5million.

The School has allocated £1million of its funds for the project and we are launching an appeal to raise a further £1.5million. £380,000 has already been pledged by a couple of extremely generous donors which will fund the costs of the NuVu fellow for two years and make a start towards the capital project fund.

We launched our appeal at Balgray on 2 September to coincide with the 140th Anniversary of the School.

NEWS Helen Broadfoot (2005) made history in August 1998 when she became the first female pupil at Kelvinside, and in June 2018 she did it again, by being the first female speaker at our Annual Prize Giving. She did us all proud and it was great to see her parents former Rector, John Broadfoot and Mrs Cecilia Broadfoot there to support her.

When Helen left in 2005 she travelled to Sri Lanka for three months and did amazing work in an orphanage for children who lost parents in the Tsunami. This was followed by 3 months exploring Australia. On her return to Scotland, she attended Edinburgh University to study Human Geography, graduating with a 2:1 Honours Degree. After university Helen moved to London where, after a few internships, is now working as Fashion Editor with Net-A-Porter. Helen loves to travel, meet new people and explore new cultures. Hopefully the next time she is in Glasgow she will have time to visit our budding young designers in the art department.

Andrew Davidson (2015) We are delighted to see Andrew back in Glasgow playing for the Glasgow Warriors.

Glasgow Warriors have signed lock, Andrew, from Newcastle Falcons on a two-month contract.

It is Andrew’s second involvement in the Warriors set-up, having trained at Scotstoun during the 2014/15 season.

The 21-year-old is a product of the Fosroc Scottish Rugby Academy and played for Glasgow against ASM Clermont Auvergne in a preseason game before heading to English Championship side London Scottish in November 2015.

He joined Newcastle Falcons in 2016 and played five times for the English Premiership club, scoring one try.

Robin Lumsden (1962) has kindly given us the following update: “Following 13 years of School at Kelvinside Academy, I studied Engineering through the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in Glasgow and in London at the University of London (South Bank). In 1969 I relocated to South Africa and joined Merz and McLellan Consulting Engineers and stayed with them and associate firms through to 1991. The Partnership of Parsons & Lumsden Consulting Mechanical Engineers was then formed with my friend Sydney Parsons and we designed and engineered project mainly in the Sectors of Health Facilities and University Campuses. The practice was sold in 2013 and I have assisted with the new owners in a small way through the last 5 years although final retirement is imminent. Golf, lawn bowls and travelling with my wife, Hazel, to visit our families in London and Toronto will now receive more attention. Hazel and I celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary this year and our 50th Anniversary of arriving in South Africa next year.”

Mhairi MacMillan (nee Rushforth) (2002) was the first female School Captain and we congratulate Mhairi on her marriage to Neil in 2014. Mhairi and Neil welcomed their daughter Maisie Elizabeth into the world in October 2016 and are looking forward to the birth of their second child in August.

Lachlan Goudie (1994) is a Scottish Artist and TV Presenter. After studying English Literature at Cambridge University he received the Levy-Plumb scholarship, a year-long painting residency at Christ’s College. In 1999 Lachlan was awarded the R.S.P. Prize for painting at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, and in 2001 the N.S. MacFarlane prize at the Royal Scottish Academy. He graduated in June 2004 from Camberwell College of Arts with a degree in Fine Art and Painting. He exhibits with the Royal Portrait Society and regularly shows in London, New York and Edinburgh.

We were thrilled to see Lachlan’s enthralling documentary about the life and works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh “Glasgow’s Neglected Genius” on BBC2 Scotland in June this year.

John Duff Lodge Opening

Charlotte Mathews (2016) Congratulations to Charlotte on being selected to represent Edinburgh University at the global iGEM synthetic biology competition in Boston later this year.

The official opening of the John Duff Lodge was a fantastic day. Mr Duff was in great form and was delighted to see some of his former pupils, Nigel Fleming and David Barrowman from the Class of 1993, as well as Charles Macfarlane, George Bennet, Fraser Lamont and Paul Cooper from the Class of 1997.

Drew Noble ( 1961) has kindly supplied us with an update on his life since leaving KA. “I graduated, some would say, escaped, from KA, where I witnessed the brilliance of Alan Rodgers and Michael Black, in 1961 to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Strathclyde University. After becoming proficient at bridge I graduated from Strathclyde in 1966. I worked in the communications and computer industries in Scotland (Standard Telephone and Cable, D-Mac), the United States of America (Computer Equipment Corp), South Africa (Plessey and International Computers), England (Computer Technology), Canada (Bell Northern Research), and the USA again (GTE, General Dynamics, Raytheon, and Harris). I was a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (formerly the IEE) and was the Chair of the IET in the Americas from 2012 until 2015.

Being an engineer and working in these different countries gave me a wonderful experience, being exposed to different cultures, politics, and worldviews. There are few professions which provide such opportunities, and I would heartily recommend Engineering as a profession to be followed.

I met my wife, Gwyneth, at a West of Scotland Rugby Club Bar-B-Q in 1971. She was teaching in Ayr and had been offered jobs in Jamaica and New Zealand, but I persuaded her that she would have a better future with me in the USA – fortunately she agreed!

We married in Silver Spring, Maryland in February 1972 – Iain Kirkhope (class of 1962) and his wife Lorna drove down from Toronto, Ontario, to be my best man. Our son David was born in Cape Town,

South Africa in 1974 and our daughter Julie was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1982. Julie, being born in the US was a US citizen from day one, and the rest of us became naturalized citizens in 1988 at a fantastic ceremony in historic Faneuil Hall in Boston, MA – entertainment was provided by Yoyo Ma (the celebrated cellist, himself a naturalized citizen), and the Boston Latin School Choir. I will never forget little 6 year old Julie sitting in the back seat of the car on the way home from the ceremony when she said “Today is a great day! Today the rest of my family became American!”.

I retired from my last job (developing the ground based data collection and processing system for the GOES weather satellite network) with Harris in Melbourne, Florida in 2014. We have lived on a barrier island off the east coast of Florida for 11 years now, and thoroughly enjoy the Florida lifestyle. We are close to Port Canaveral, so going on cruises in the Caribbean and to Central America is very easy. Of course we also go on cruises in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and the South Pacific. We both love to travel and have visited 55 countries so far. Still on my bucket list is a transatlantic cruise, Gibraltar, Vancouver (it’s missing from the list of the world’s beautiful cities that I have visited - San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, St. Petersburg, Rome, Venice, Sydney), the Isle of Skye, train journeys (across the Canadian Rockies, from Chicago to San Francisco, and through the Chanel Tunnel) Sicily, Malta, and the Amalfi coast. We also spend time at our rental properties on the ocean front in North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Indian Harbour Beach, FL. So life is busy, but we always have time for visits with and from friends and family.”

Toby Paterson (1990). The following interview with Toby appeared in the Scotsman earlier this year:

The Space we’re in As Glasgow International brings contemporary art to 78 venues across the city, Toby Paterson talks to Susan Mansfield about his part in the project, along with his concerns that the city’s problems need more than a can-do attitude.

From the high windows of Civic House in Cowcaddens, where Toby Paterson is preparing to install his show for Glasgow International, a cross section of the city is laid out before us. The M8 roars by at eye level; beyond it rise the tenements of Garnethill, the white steeples of Park Circus and, on the other side, the red brick flats of Raglan Street.

And, in the middle – what? An expanse of scrubby grass and bushes with a solitary island of children’s play equipment and two artificial five-a-side pitches Paterson says are unused. One of the city’s many vacant spaces.

the heart of the city, which fell apart in the early 1970s leaving stretches of the city in limbo. That has been followed by underinvestment, and emphasis on big flagship projects over local regeneration and infrastructure.

We conduct most of this interview in our socks as the new floor in Civic House is currently being sanded.

Built in the early years of the 20th century to house a left-wing printing press, it was the offices of National Theatre of Scotland until NTS moved into new headquarters at Rockvilla, and is now owned

by Agile City, and urban development organisation which shares some of Paterson’s concerns.

He will be the first artist to exhibit there. He grins “I think it’s the most well-appointed floor I’ve ever worked on!”

Paterson, who has spent hours exploring the area says “Even the people who live nearby just hurry across it as quickly as possible. It’s nothing, a negative space. We’re less than a mile from George Square. It’s shocking, in a city the size of Glasgow, in the fifth or sixth richest country in the world, that this can be the case.”

Paterson is a lifelong observer of cities. The built environment has been both a personal passion and an endless source of inspiration for his work in panting, installation and sculpture. As a teenager in Glasgow he explored the city’s concrete byways as a skateboarder. At Glasgow School of Art, he developed an interest in the failures of modernist architecture which carried him into a distinctive and acclaimed artistic career. But his home city fascinates and frustrates him in equal measure.

“I guess one of the great things which has come out of being able to work as an artist and travel is being able to come back and look at my own city through a different lens but then you think: this is not normal, this is really odd and dysfunctional. A space like that one over there feels all wrong.”

Vacant spaces are not uncommon in post-industrial cities, but rarely so close to the city centre, and rate so completely unused, even in unsanctioned ways.

Paterson puts Glasgow’s situation down to the double-whammy of post industrialisation followed by the city’s 1960’s masterplan, to demolish the Victorian tenements and drive a motorway through

The title of the show is Penumbralism, the term he has coined for the city’s in-between spaces (the word is used to describe areas which seem to fall between light and shadow during a lunar eclipse).

He stops several times to apologise for his gloomy tone. “I didn’t want it to be like this, I wanted it to be: “Wow, look at this resource [of empty space] that we have to hand, won’t it be great when we can do something with this? But there’s a degree of melancholia in the mix”

Nevertheless, one of the touchstones of Glasgow International is the way that it opens up the city’s non-spaces. Later this month, pop-up exhibitions and projects will rise like mushrooms in vacant shops, closed-down buildings and empty lots.

Railway arches, a former pipe factory and a vast gas purifier shed are just some of the venues this year’s festival will explore.

But Paterson is concerned that the success of Glasgow’s grassroots can-do contemporary art scent has a flipside. “GI is brilliant, it’s had many psotive effects and I’m delighted to be involved. But it becomes easy to say “They do all that on a shoestring anyway, what wonderful energy that doesn’t need further support or development. That’s the double-edged sword of self-organisation. There are aspects of that across the city as a whole.

Yes, Glasgow is vibrant and dynamic but it has great big holes in the middle of it, failures of infrastructure and investment and vision.”

Paterson is currently involved with – artist Raydale Dower and a group of other artists and skateboards – in a plan to create a sculpture park and skate park in another penumbral space, under a motorway flyover in Port Eglinton near Tradeston “So much of this is driven by a sense that there must surely be other ways of doing things. Surely we’re not just tied into this situation in perpetuity? I think the situation around Brexit is only going to make that thinking more acute.

“My work has always been driven by a question of: ‘Why is this like that?’ That can lead in all sorts of directions. I think what I’m trying to do at Civic House is make some symbolically affirmative action in relation to negative spaces and these seemingly intractable issues of what the fabric of the city is. I can’t provide any solutions, I’m just the annoying person asking the odd question”

We were fortunate that Aidan could sepnd more time in School and therefore able to tour afterwards and speak to the pupils on an individual basis as he encountered them throughout the School.

Colin Neill (1972) once again entertained and enlightened our Senior 6 pupils with his vast experience of life and business. It is always a pleasure to see Colin in School.

Mel Scott (1979) inspired Senior 6 with his work for charity at SCOTSERV (Scotland’s Medical Transport Charity.

Mel is also involved with Therapets and we look forward to seeing him again in the future. Mel also joined the Senior 6 pupils for their time away at the John Duff Lodge.

Cobbler Club Reunion

Class of 1968 Reunion

The Cobbler Club held their first reunion in Mackenzie House earlier this year. It was great to see Charlie Allan back in School along with cobblers from various year groups. Special thanks must go to Doug Sommerville (1965) and Burns Shearar (1964) for organising the event. Everyone enjoyed lunch and many a discussion regarding their favourite cobbler.

The School was delighted to welcome 21 members of the Class of 1968 for a tour prior to their Reunion Dinner in the evening. They enjoyed the many changes that have taken place and our Senior 6 tourers thoroughly enjoyed hearing the many stories of the adventures that occurred during their time at School.

yesteryear In the early days of Kelvinside Academy its pupils and staff had the air of being a ‘family’, because they all came from one small area of Glasgow’s West End. When the School opened, the City Chambers in George Square had yet to be built; there was no

subway; there was no railway line to Kirklee. Yet the suburb of Kelvinside had already been firmly established, and today remains much as it was at the turn of the century. Kelvinside Academy must be one of the very few major Scottish Schools still open, after such length of time, occupying the same main magnificent building as when it started.

On 2 September 1878 the Kelvinside Academy opened its doors for the education of boys who were drawn from the growing population of the western suburbs of Glasgow.

In 1877, there was issued a ‘Proposal for the Formation of a Proprietary Educational Institution’ to be called ‘The Kelvinside Academy’. The first prospectus contained the following paragraph: “While Shareholders may confidently anticipate a satisfactory return on the capital invested, the promoters have mainly in view to provide an Academy so conducted as to afford a guarantee that sound education in its highest branches, shall be within the reach of all residing in the district”

oBITuARIES Sadly we have received notifications of the death of the following Academicals. The School and Club send their heartfelt condolences to their families during this difficult and sad time.

Michael Craig Dymock (1970) 1952 – 2018 Michael Craig Dymock passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday 16th May 2018 after a short illness, surrounded by his beloved wife and twin daughters. His funeral was held at Linn Crematorium on Wednesday 23rd May 2018.

Michael or “Hummock” as he was known during his years at Kelvinside was the owner of the local ‘Dynorod’ franchise which he had run successfully for some 14 years and stated proudly at any gathering he was a “Drainage Magnate”.

A proud family man, the father of twins Victoria and Lesley, husband to Susan, he doted on his 2 grandsons Nicholas and Callum, he also encouraged his son’s-in-law Scott and Charlie.

A keen rugby player throughout his school years, he went on to be he claimed an “International Rugby Player” when challenged about this he replied “as a Scot I captained the Egyptian Rugby Team. So therefore he was an Internationalist”, a mark of his sense of humour.

After leaving school Michael was employed by John Laing Construction for some years. Then seizing the opportunity he went on to work for Fosroc Building Chemicals. Michael moved to Abu Dhabi then Saudi and onward to Manila in the Philippines, taking his family with him as he progressed in his career.

It was in the Philippines he returned to his first sporting love, motor rallying, where he successfully

campaigned a Toyota in the National Championship with some success.

Opportunity knocked again and Michael, Susan and family moved to Cairo where he became managing director of Foseco’s operation there. Finally Michael returned to Scotland and he started working for MC Building Chemicals, based in Birmingham, but served by Michael in his own way from Glasgow.

Finally Michael settled and together with his wife Susan he acquired the Dynorod franchise in Glasgow and South West Scotland.

His love of motorsport reared its head again and for some years he campaigned his Dynorod Vauxhall Chevette in the Scottish Historic Rally Championship. Together with his life long friend James Crichton, they achieved several class wins and ultimate the Class Championship in 2009.

Business and family took over his life again and until his untimely death he devoted his time to work, Susan, Victoria, Lesley and their respective families.

A real family man and true gentleman, he was well respected, but always up for a laugh. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and myself.

James Crichton (1970)

John Leslie Henshilwood (1951) Born 25th September 1945 and died 2nd February 2018 Leslie Henshilwood, who has died aged 72, attended Kelvinside Academy all of his school life.

Leslie joined ‘The Times’ newspaper and entered the world of advertising before moving to South Africa with his wife and family where he spent a number of years, again in the advertising business.

Leslie returned to Scotland in 1984 and met Fiona, who was to become his second wife. They married in 1986 and settled in St Andrews. Sadly, Leslie was diagnosed with lunch cancer in 2005, and dedicated much of his remaining years actively supporting the McMillan Cancer Unit and became a spokesman for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. In addition to his cancer support work, Leslie found time to support Fiona’s charity, Continuing Care Service (North East Fife). In addition to support services Leslie was a well-known figure at St Andrew’s

University where he spent a number of years as an Invigilator.

Leslie is survived by his wife Fiona and out stepsons, Richard, Stephen, Gavin and Jonathan, their wives and families.

George Henshilwood (1953)

William Burns Shearar (1964) went to be with his Lord on Wednesday 27th June 2018, after a life filled with love and devotion for his wife Helen (née Totten) and family, Karen, Andrew and grandson Benjamin.

Services to celebrate Burns’ life took place on Wednesday 4th July at St Michael’s Episcopal Church.

Grandson Benjamin (2015) “Burns was a really nice man and a great friend – sadly missed” Burns was a regular visitor to the School as he attended many plays starring grandson, Benjamin, and also supported our development plans throughout the years. Recently Burns donated his School Magazines, Senior School notebooks and photographs to the School Archive. We were also honoured to receive his father’s Honour Cap which is currently on display at the Cricket Museum, Hampden Park along with a School scarf belonging to Burns.

Earlier in this edition of Minerva we have expressed our thanks to Burns for his help in organising the Cobbler Club Reunion.

Campbell William Masson, Cantlay (1964), died peacefully at St Margaret of Scotland Hospice on Christmas Day 2017. Dear husband of Ruth, much loved father of Graham and Claire and adored grandad of Rona, Andrew, James and Ayla.

Peter Angus (Gus) Brechin (1952) died peacefully on 9 March 2018.

Gus, beloved husband of Betty, much loved father of Peter and Susan, proud grandfather to Lindsay, Laura, Grace and Olivia.

William (Bill) Charles Carnegie Morrison (1955) CBE CA, passed away peacefully, aged 80, on 29th July 2018, at West Hall Care Home, West Byfleet, Surrey. Beloved husband of Joceline, loving father of Patricia and Sue, stepfather of Kate and grandfather of Cameron, Sarah, Nicky, Kirsty, Pip, Harry and Carrie.
