two recent initiatives are symptomatic of this desire.

Firstly, our new Wilderness Campus in the Cairngorms National Park will provide an environment within which our pupils can benefit from both the challenging and rejuvenating power of nature. I should like to reiterate at this point my thanks to John Duff, whose generosity has enabled the development of the Wilderness Campus. During his time as Rector, John was a staunch advocate of outdoor education, and quite simply, his recent support has allowed us to further develop our whole school curriculum to harness the opportunities which the outdoors offer.

lease accept my very warm welcome to the first Minerva of Session 2017-18. Whilst the layout of this excellent publication has been freshened up, the pages remain full with the achievements of our school community.

Indeed, as I read through Minerva before it goes to print, I always feel a great deal of pride.

During my Prize Giving address last term, I suggested that my colleagues and I share a strong desire to shape the national educational discourse, and in doing so, provide a world class education for our pupils. It strikes me that

I think it is also right to highlight our collaboration with the NuVu innovation school, which saw academics from Harvard and MIT deliver a number of workshops for our pupils over the summer. To see our pupils equipping themselves with ‘future skills’ such as the ability to 3D print and write code was very exciting, and indicative of the School’s need to keep pace with the world beyond Kirklee Road.

I trust you will all enjoy reading Minerva as much as I do, and may I take this opportunity to thank all members of the KA community for their ongoing support of our school.

Aye, Robot – it’s the classroom of the future…

O

ur pupils got to grips with the combined intelligence of humans and machines, as the world’s leading innovation school brought the classroom of the future to KA in July.

24 pupils attended NuVu’s design and technology camp and worked with experts from MIT and Harvard to explore the combined intelligence of humans and machines to solve problems.

Martha Armstrong (S1) spent the week exploring Swarm Robotics and thought the NuVu studio was “unlike anything I’ve ever done.”

“You create incredible products and get to use kit you’ve never tried before like laser cutters and 3D printers as well as using code and different materials and components”, she said.

“You are constantly learning but it doesn’t feel like you’re in school being taught.”

Leading academics celebrated our exclusive partnership with NuVu, which challenges the concept of the traditional education system in this country. Professor Frank Coton, University of Glasgow Vice-Principal, Dr Stephen Breslin, Chief Executive Officer at Glasgow’s Science Centre and Alex Clarke from Skills Development Scotland were among the studio visitors to meet the pupils, and their robots.

innovation at Kelvinside Academy. Pupils are being challenged to think outside the box and are coming up with some truly astonishing solutions. They aren’t afraid to fail, and instead, adopt a growth mindset. Each mistake allows them to evolve the task at hand, bouncing ideas off one another to come to collaborative conclusions.”

Ian Munro, Rector, is delighted that our partnership with NuVu is stretching the boundaries of what constitutes education and closely aligns with his core philosophy to embrace a wide range of ideas to create the best-rounded education possible for KA pupils.

The Rector said “we are thrilled with the success of the Swarm Robotics and Bio-Fashion studios that have been running at Kelvinside Academy.

The buzz about the school has been electric and our pupils’ enthusiasm is contagious.

The skills they are learning are vital for the world outside which is constantly evolving. I’m so pleased

these technology studios have allowed our children to experience a different, but no less valid, way of learning.

“Inviting world-leading experts into our school can only help our pupils grow. It’s awe-inspiring to see some of the work they have produced in just one week. ” Based in Boston, NuVu was established in 2010.

Since then, thousands of pupils experience its unique educational model. Rather than classrooms and subjects, pupils work on collaborative projects, immersing themselves in the creative process and all its challenges, under the guidance of designers and experts from Harvard and MIT, solving real life problems through a critical and rigorous innovation process.

Communication skills are honed with pupils presenting their finished project to guest experts, receiving constructive feedback in real time.

The team from NuVu that visited KA was Emily Glass, NuVu’s Head of Partnerships, Swarm Robotics expert Nathan Melenbrink, Design Fellow, Anjali Patel, Chief Academic Officer Andrew Marcus and University of West England Senior Lecturer Becca Rose.

Summer Staff News Developments T at KA

O

ur Facilities Manager, Colin Shaw, and the KA Janitorial Team were hugely busy this summer with several big improvement projects being carried out around the School.

Mirrlees Drive received a huge facelift. Several of the classrooms were painted, re-carpeted and had new furniture fitted. The front garden also received some love and attention and is now the perfect place to find a spot in the sun for lunch or quiet contemplation.

The flat roof previously hidden behind the Games Hall wall has been converted into a beautiful Roof Terrace. Thanks to a generous donation from the PTA we have been able to transform this Junior School space with decking, lush planting and imaginative furniture. It now offers enviable outside classroom space as well as the perfect wellbeing space for mindfulness sessions. We wonder what snowy space ideas will emerge over the Winter months?

The Mall, centre of school life, has also enjoyed some new developments. Everyone loves our new Glasgow skyline mural which positions KA in the heart of the city. New modern Minerva noticeboards are user friendly for team sheets, posters and information notices and look great too.

Mackenzie House, our Sixth Year Centre, was repainted and new furniture added to get it ready for the arrival of our new S6 year as well as Mr Cuthbertson and Ms Gallacher, who now have offices sited there.

his Summer we said goodbye to three retiring members of staff who between them gave 67 years of service to KA. Mr Stefan Klimowicz was a well-kent face around both Junior and Senior School teaching various modern languages for 41 years. Mrs Diana Macgregor taught maths to pupils for 15 years. Mrs June Rynn led pupils through the tricky transition stage of Senior Prep for 12 years.

Mrs Macgregor was a fundamental part of the KA family for 15 years and throughout that time she was involved in many aspects of school life.

In addition to her academic responsibilities, she always took the opportunity to participate in activities outwith the classroom. She particularly enjoyed working with S6 as part of the Voluntary Tutor Organisation and Outreach programme.

She also spent many hours practising her “Kim & Aggie” routine which involved showing the S6 pupils how to become domestic gods and goddesses. Very rarely did you see Diana sitting still. In fact, since retiring, she has been enjoying cycling through Europe with her husband, Ian. Mrs Rynn was an integral part of KA for almost 12 years and throughout that time worked with several different teachers guiding pupils through Senior Prep and into the ‘big school’. All of us miss hearing her uniquely quick footsteps speeding along the corridor! Her constant enthusiasm and steady level head approach were hugely valued whether it be in class, at VTO, taking spin fitness classes, backstage at the Show or any of the other numerous things she was involved in.

Mr Stefan Klimowicz was one of the School’s longest ever serving members of staff. He dedicated 41 years of his working life teaching French to KA pupils. Mr Klimowicz was king of the table tennis table and also coached hundreds of KA pupils through the intricacies of check mate at Chess Club. A valued and long serving member of the Senior Choir, it was fitting that they performed his favourite song at this year’s Prize Giving in his honour. Mr Klimowicz was a one-off and will be much missed by his pupils.

Hello to New Staff

S

everal new members of staff have joined KA in the last few months.

Replacing Mr Jim Cuthbertson, who has taken on the new role of KA’s Assistant Rector, is Mr Michael Smith our new Head of Maths, Science and Technology Faculty. Mr Smith spent the last four years working as Head of Science in a high achieving British Curriculum school in Abu Dhabi.

After deciding to move home with his family, he says he was attracted to work at Kelvinside by the new developments in technology and teaching methods.

Mr Smith is a great believer that pupils achieve the best learning by being given the opportunity to make mistakes and then lead their own learning.

The new Head of S6 and teacher of English is Ms Deborah Gallacher. Ms Gallacher spent the last 14 years at Jordanhill SchooI working as a pastoral Head of House and English teacher. As well as SQA marking duties for Higher English over the past decade, she is also a committee member of the Scottish Guidance Association, who regularly contribute to the national dialogue regarding pupil support and wellbeing.

With a particular interest in Careers and Senior Transitions beyond school she is especially excited to shape the S6 Experience with - and for - some of the most impressive young adults she says she has

Also joining us to teach English is Mr David Miller.

Winner of the Guardian Award for UK Teacher of the Year 2008, Mr Miller comes to Kelvinside with a wealth of experience both in teaching and a variety of other sectors. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, a National Teaching Fellow and until recently, was Director of Learning for London-based games company, Kuato Studios. Mr Miller has been an SQA Advanced Higher Marker; a visiting speaker at Glasgow University; and a Consultant for BBC Learning. To get to know him better you can join the 8000 people already following his twitter feed @DavidMiller_UK. Mr Cameron Watts joins our Maths Department after two years at Lomond School teaching Mathematics, coaching Athletics and running the Wakeboarding Club. He is most excited about getting involved with the CCF, Climbing Club and DofE along with everything else at KA. Ms Chantal Winning has joined KA to teach French and Spanish. She feels acutely aware of the UK’s position in the European market and ensures that she is continuously promoting the benefits of languages to all. Having spent time in West Africa, Ms Winning is also active in promoting global citizenship, ethical trading and sustainable living through activities such as KA Fairtrade.

Captains & Prefects T he end of term tradition of the outgoing Captains ringing the bell and then announcing the names of the new Captains to the pupil body continued this year.

The Captains Fergus Harvey and Scarlett Green are being supported by Vice-Captains Esme Boyle, Lucy Rankin, Sam Clarke and Cian Shelton.

After careful consideration and discussion, the Rector also reintroduced Senior 6 Prefects to Kelvinside Academy to help support the school’s leadership and captaincy teams in ensuring the smooth day to day running of the School.

Prefects are expected to exhibit the personal qualities that are valued at KA, including selfdiscipline, leadership, strong communication skills, kindness,

good humour, helpfulness and care for others. The Rector believes that “Prefects will act as positive role models throughout our community, by demonstrating the highest standards of behaviour, attitude and appearance at all times.”

Captains and Prefects have received a newly designed pin to recognise their positions of responsibility. The Captains have gold owl pins and the Prefects are wearing silver owls. The owl is known as the sacred creature of Minerva and often seen depicted alongside her, symbolising her association with wisdom and knowledge.

Academic University Research is Child’s Play for J6 We established a groundbreaking partnership between The University of Glasgow and Junior School last session.

It may still be a long way in the distance, but pupils in our Junior School will have a good idea of what to expect at university after working on their own research projects.

In a unique partnership with the University, Junior 5 and Junior 6 pupils embarked on a project with Dr Niamh Stack, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, to become researchers and investigate issues important to them and their school community.

Each pupil was challenged to design their own independent research project, create their own questions and conduct their own analysis in a project aimed to develop creativity, critical thinking, numeracy, literacy and communication skills and to develop analytical capability.

Andrew Dickenson, Head of Junior School, said: “Children usually think of research as visiting websites, they don’t see it as generating their own knowledge. This has been an incredibly revealing learning curve for our pupils.”

“It’s fantastic to see the results of the initiative as there really are no limitations. The only thing that can hold them back is their own curiosity. The response from the children has been marvellous to watch.”

The project got off to an inspiring start with a visit to Glasgow University to hear academic psychologists discuss their own research into such subjects as face recognition or

the links between social media and changing sleep patterns in young people. In this first session the children were able to get an insight into how these experienced researchers went about their business and get fired up by their passion for research.

Previous research has argued that children are better positioned for conducting research concerning children and that active participation will empower them and give them a voice on the issues that will impact their lives (Kim, 2015). Our pupils clearly demonstrated their interest in issues that impact on their lives and their desire to have a voice in these in the topics they self-selected for their research

projects: Does homework help you learn? What do people in my school think about Brexit? Do boys or girls feel more pressure while doing tests? Do children with one sibling fight more than children with more than one sibling?

At the beginning of the project, pupils were taught about the nature of research, ethics and framing a research question. With the support of University of Glasgow fourth year student Bethan Howells, they were then guided through best practice in data collection and analysis.

Finally pupils reported on their findings at a morning

conference back at the University after being tasked to strip out any bias from their research, analyse their results and communicate their findings in a way that engages their audience.

“We know that independence, autonomy and the ability to control learning experiences can be powerful in inspiring motivation and academic engagement but the Junior 6 pupils have exceeded all expectations in this project”, said Dr Stack.

“They have independently chosen topics like the effects of testing on pupils, social media use among young people, Brexit, that are currently taxing Educationalists, Psychologists and Governments and said we want to contribute our voices to these discussions which is extremely impressive”, “It has been quite inspiring to follow their progress through the process and witness first-hand how engaged, motivated and thoughtful they are – they have asked some really hard questions about the research process! I think we are often guilty of under estimating young people and what they can achieve if given the right opportunities and appropriate challenges.”

Louise Kemp (J6) added: “We were working by ourselves on our projects which was challenging, but if you were organised you found that it was much easier and we did have plenty of help from our teachers and the university staff.”

As well as conducting their own research the children are also the subject of Bethan Howell’s research project; “Exploring children’s perceptions of the learning and motivational benefits associated with undertaking their own research”.

ACAdemiC Debating in Parliament Mahee Mustafa (S6) and Honor Johnstone (S6) made it all the way to the final of the Law Society of Scotland’s Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament which took place in June in the Debating Chamber of the Scottish Parliament.

128 teams from 85 different schools around Scotland entered the first round, all competing to debate the motion ‘This House would ban referendums’.

To get through to the final stage of the competition to find Scotland’s Best Young Debaters, Mahee and Honor had already tackled topics such as the use of performance enhancing drugs

in sport, punishing parents for the crimes of their children and the prioritisation of public safety over the right to strike.

In the final, the four teams presented articulate and convincing arguments both for and against the right for smokers to have access to free healthcare.

Many of Honor and Mahee’s fellow S6 pupils, as well as the Rector and Deputy Rector, travelled to Edinburgh to support them. Mr Munro said “the live debate was very exciting and I was struck both by the atmosphere and the quality of the discussion.

It was a real privilege for all of us to watch Mahee and Honor on the floor of the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament and to

witness Presiding Officer, Ken MacIntosh, chairing the debate.”

Unfortunately they were pipped to the title with Douglas Academy emerging victorious.

Engineering the Future for Girls’ Ashanti Magoma (S3) won a coveted place at the prestigious ‘Engineering the Future for Girls’ Summer School at University of Strathclyde. There are limited places available on this week long course which is delivered by BP and BAM Nuttall employees and researchers from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. The course is designed to engage girls in a wide range of engineering challenges that will inspire them to become the next generation of engineers.

Enterprising Maths Competition

Waterstones’ Book Reviewers

The Kelvinside Academy team for this year’s Scottish Enterprising Maths Competition was Ushna Waseem (S3), Abbey MacCuish (S3), Lewis Ip (S3) and Kai yai (S2).

Ushna reported on the team’s achievements. “We managed to score an amazing 174/180 for the first part of the competition.

The maths relay took place after lunch. It was tough but we conquered it. During the relay we did face some really tricky questions but managed to answer most of them. It was challenging for all of us but we had a lot of fun along the way.”

Aspiring authors in the Junior School have been finding an exciting outlet for their talents through reviewing new fiction for the Waterstones book store, Byres Road.

The children’s recommendations are now a regular feature at the store, where the pupil book review group also holds lively literary discussions.

West End Festival Speech Dominic Ferrie (S3) is a keen researcher of architect, James Sellers who designed Kelvinside Academy, Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church, St Luke’s Cathedral, the Stewart Memorial Fountain and the amazing Main Pavilion of the Great Exhibition of 1888 in Kelvingrove Park. He spoke publicly about his passion to a full house at Hillhead Library as part of the West End Festival programme. The event organisers were full of praise for the way Dominic delivered such a professional and knowledgeable performance.

Expressive Arts Junior 6 Show Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies This version of the story of Robin Hood always promised to be a hilarious farce as long as the Junior 6s matched the sparkling script (full of some very obvious puns!) with confident delivery and a commitment to the teamwork needed - and they did not disappoint. In fact, they set a standard that future Junior School productions will be measured by for many years to come.

One of the most impressive things about the show was the whole cast song and dance sequences that were so smoothly and enthusiastically performed – there was a polish to these parts of the show that is often hard to achieve. It was here that every single performer – even those with minute speaking parts – could be right there in the middle of things, giving it their all.

Myles Codona brought fantastic poise and comic timing to the title role, at times consciously milking

the audience as he paused for effect. As the play went on, Myles grew increasingly confident to overact in a way that was entirely in keeping with his position as chief ‘luvvy’ of the troupe. Other actors fed off this and also began to enjoy slowing down their delivery and playing for laughs.

The baddies in this show were over-the-top, pantostyle villains and were played with gusto by Lucas Codona as the Sheriff and Nathan Sen as King John. By contrast, the ‘torture consultant’ Gavin Gutwrencher (played by Jack Dalziel) was a baddie with a heart of gold and Jack’s cameo role was one of the delights of the show. Another comic highlight was the duo of Bolt (Iain Maclean) and Grabbit (Cameron Reid) whose cheeky chappy double-act

brought belly-laughs from the audience.

Strong women were a feature of this show - Maid Marion was enthusiastically played by Eleanor Shields whose increasing frustration with the Merry Men’s ineptitude was sustained very well.

Erin Church as Nursie was another actor who grew into her role with every line and showed real poise to hold back the punch lines for maximum effect.

However, this show was emphatically about the team effort and not the individuals. Every single performer lifted their game to new heights in time for the performance and not only gave the audience a night to remember but the whole year group an experience they will never forget.

To top it off, Brian Beacom of The Herald attended incognito and nominated it as his Moment of the Week on Shereen Nanjiani’s BBC Radio Scotland Saturday Morning arts show. “In the last 7 or 8 days I’ve been to see 4 theatre shows and I have to say the best show I’ve seen this week was the Primary 6 kids of Kelvinside Academy... perfectly choreographed... shy little kids suddenly becoming very ebullient and confident... a lovely spoof on the Oscars... these kids are smart, they’re really switched on, they get satire... gender swap stuff going on... Will Scarlet played by a girl... and the campest Robin Hood you’ve ever seen!... what a great mix, what a great feeling and a great energy about the whole production!”

Huge thanks go to Sheelagh Paterson and Alison McAllister for their tireless work on choreography, props and costumes and Andrew Dickenson for casting and direction. Now, how are we going to match these dizzy heights in the coming year?

Start spreading the news…

Lewis Merrylees (S6) has bid farewell to Glasgow and hello to the city that never sleeps, after he secured a scholarship at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) in New York.

Lewis has swapped Byres Road for Madison Avenue and hopes to follow in the impressive footsteps of AADA alumni Paul Rudd, Danny DeVito, Adrian Brody, Kim Cattrall, Ann Hathaway, Robert Redford and Grace Kelly.

During his years at KA, Lewis has played roles in Kiss Me Kate, Beauty and the Beast and last term played Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby.

He said: “being accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts really is a dream come true. I feel passionate about acting and learning these skills at such a prestigious institution will be incredible.

The calibre of actors who have attended AADA is astonishing and I’m looking forward to living and working alongside so many talented people.

“KA provides pupils the opportunity to get involved with the performing arts from a young age and this really helped to build my confidence and become comfortable being on stage and speaking in front of people. My experience definitely provided the drive to apply for such a prestigious acting school and helped me at my audition for AADA.” Aspiring actors from all over the world apply to the Academy and securing an audition is no mean feat.

Lewis travelled to London for his audition in the Prince of Wales Theatre. Here, he performed two prepared monologues before giving a cold reading of Chekov’s ‘The Seagull’. Five days later, Lewis was given the amazing news, that not only had he been offered a place on their two year course, but he had also been awarded a scholarship.

Jenny Cunningham, our Head of Expressive Arts, said: “we are thrilled that Lewis is heading to New York to pursue his dream of a career in acting. It’s a fantastic achievement and one of which we are very proud.”

Hollywood Music Legend Some of the S3 music pupils were fortunate enough to recently visit the Glasgow music studio of Craig Armstrong, OBE. Craig Armstrong’s music is as varied as it is successful.

Born in 1959 in the east end of Glasgow, the musician and composer headed to London in 1977 to train at the Royal Academy of Music. Since the mid-nineties, he has created scores for both Hollywood and independent films.

The pupils were impressed with the amount of equipment in such a small space and it was great for them to hear how a famous composer works. Craig showed them the final scene from the latest Bridget

Jones film complete with the music he had composed for it. He then showed them the same clip but minus the music and it highlighted how important music is in any film.

They were treated to clips from other films for which Craig has composed the music and the girls were amazed to find that they were films that they had watched: Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet and the latest Red Nose Day advert which featured music from Love Actually to name but a few.

It was a great experience and to top it off they were able to get photos taken holding some of Craig’s many awards - not many of our pupils have held a BAFTA or Golden Globe!

Poster Competition Christie Burns (S1) was a regional winner of the 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Schools Poster Competition.

The talented artist beat off over 5,500 other entrants from across the region to be crowned winner for Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Christie said: “I am so happy that my design has come top in my region. I love art and design and being creative. Having my design

chosen as the winner and getting the opportunity to appear in an exhibition in Edinburgh is really exciting. This has certainly inspired me to keep on drawing and designing!” Jane Hardy, Deputy Head of Faculty, said: “we are absolutely thrilled that Christie’s design was chosen as the regional winner, to come top of a region is a huge achievement particularly with over five thousand entries to choose from - Well done Christie.”

Expressive Arts Big West I joined West of Scotland Schools String Orchestra two years ago which is the training orchestra so I was delighted to get into the West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra this year after a tough audition.

There were only sixteen places available and a lot of people auditioned.

It was a week-long residential course and we played for 8 hours every day which was fantastic for my playing and sight reading but very sore on my back and shoulders. It was also great to make friends from lots of other schools all over the West of Scotland - but the food was terrible.

I really enjoyed the music we were learning.

It included Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 which was my favourite - especially the third movement. Shostakovich wrote his fifth symphony during a period of persecution and oppression in Stalin’s Russia. Stalin had banned most contemporary artists, labelling them decadent. Shostakovich lived in fear, sleeping outside his apartment to spare his family the experience of his imminent arrest.

You can definitely hear the despair and fear in his music.

It’s the first time I’ve played in a full symphony orchestra and it was an amazing experience to be part of the sound of ninety musicians.

I’m hoping to return next year but will have to audition again.

KA Internationalists KA had a record number of pupils competing at National and International levels during the 2016/17 session.

Lucy Findlay (S6) represented Scotland at U18 hockey.

Scott Bell (S5) represented Scotland at U16 rugby.

Esme Boyle (S5) represented Scotland in shooting.

Lily Evans Haggerty (S2) at just 13 years of age Lily won the British U15s Cross Country Championships and competed for Scotland in the inter-district Championships.

Scarlett Green (S5), Hannah McGregor (S5), Monica Sloan (S5), Cameron Faulds (S5) and Colette Elliott (S5) played for the Great Britain U17 Handball team in the European Championships. Chloe Green (S5) played for the Scotland U17 team alongside the other five girls.

Hamish Bottomley (S5), Euan Brady (S5), Hardie Brown (S5), Jack Porter (S5), Alexander Geddes (S5), Lewis Pocock (S4) and Jamie Gray (S3) played in the Scotland U15 and U16 Scotland Handball teams.

PE teacher Miss Heather Lang also played for Scotland last session – playing for the Scottish Hockey Team against Wales in May and scoring her first international goal. Go Miss Lang!

Hockey West District During the last term of 2016/17 there were 8 KA pupils selected for West District Hockey Development Squads.

Several of our KA girls went on to play in the Inter District team competitions.

In May, Ellie Rowand played in the West District U14 team that beat the South in the finals of the Nottsports Festival.

In September, Amy Williams and Steffi Geary played for West U16 in the hard fought Inter Districts Tournament. The team was coached by KA PE Teacher Mrs Fiona Cafolla and they just lost out on gold medals via running penalties in the final. Ellie Kemsley played for the U18 team and the West team came a close 4th in the same tournament.

Rugby BT Sport Academy Selection Scottish Rugby confirmed a 97-strong BT Sport Academy roster of the country’s most promising young rugby players for the 2017/18 season.

The players named complete the academy structure that operates across four regional centres around the country and follows the BT Sport Regional Championship in the summer that allowed players to demonstrate their future potential and play their way into the programme.

Two Kelvinside Academy pupils are Academysupported players for Glasgow & The West: Scott Bell (S5) and Rory Jackson (S4). Also included is former pupil Paul Cairncross (2016).

James Kemp (S3) was selected for Glasgow and the West U16 squad. James played in all the summer regional clashes, scoring tries in the wins against both Edinburgh and Borders to face Caledonia in the final at Murrayfield.

Athletics Lily Evans Haggerty – Glasgow, Scotland, GB In March Lily Evans Haggerty (S2) followed up her Glasgow Schools Cross Country title with an emphatic win in the U15 category at the National Cross Country Championships a day later. Lily was 19 seconds ahead of the nearest runner. Aged only 13 at the time she has excelled in the U15 age group competitions and won the 1500m Indoor National title at the Emirates, setting a new Scottish record of 4.36. At 9 seconds quicker than the previous fastest time it is currently the fastest time run in the UK this year for her age.

Lily’s success continued as she went on to win the U15 British School Cross Country International in Port Talbot. She was running against the UK’s top junior athletes and put in a brilliant performance to win by 6 seconds, becoming the first Scot to ever win this U15 championship.

An appearance on BBC TV was a fun highlight just before she competed in the Mini London Marathon.

Lily came second in the U15 race, also helping Team Scotland to the team silver medal.

Proving herself to be multi-talented. Lily also competed in the 2017 Scottish National Triathlon Championships where she won the Tristar 3 age group event. This qualified her to represent Scotland at the British Triathlon Under 20’s Festival where she came a magnificent 2nd.

As she will still be able to compete in the same age competitions in the coming season we can’t wait to watch her progress in 2017/18.

Glasgow Schools Primary Athletics Championship KA pupils achieved several notable performances at the Glasgow Schools Primary Athletics Championship at Scotstoun.

Basketball Blair Ferguson (S2) was named Glasgow Rocks Juniors U14 Most Valuable Player which is testament to his outstanding performance last season.

Gilli Jones (SP) won a silver medal in the boys 100m final showing great determination in a very close race with 4 boys coming through the line within 2 meters of each other.

Jack Dalziel (J6) won a silver medal in both the P6 boys Cricket Ball Throw and the Standing Long Jump.

In the final of the P6 girls 80m Louise Kemp held her nerve to win a very close race with 3 girls all in the mix in the last 10m.

The P6 girls were victorious in the final of their relay.

They had the silkiest baton changes of the night and won by 20m. The P6 boys relay won a bronze medal in their final.

Judo Sophie McNeill (S1) competed in the Clyde Grand Prix this summer, winning all of her fights, she took the gold medal. She also fought at the British Schools Championships in Sheffield, representing Kelvinside Academy at the U44kg weight category. In her first ever competition in England she came 3rd taking the bronze medal – her first ever British medal! We are sure it will be the first of many.

Windsurfing Sam Brown (S3) made his debut appearance at the Youth National Sailing Championships this summer and was the youngest competitor in the RSX Windsurf Youth U19 class. He met his competition goal to complete all the races over the 5 days sailing, was not timed out and achieved a 14th place in his best race. Not bad going for a 15 year old. His older brother Andrew is twice British Champion in the same class so Sam was sharing the start line with his brother for the first time in UK Youth Nationals.

Triathlon Guy Evans Haggerty (S6) was part of the team that became the 2017 Scottish National Mixed Team Triathlon Relay Champions.

Handball Scottish Champs The S1 girls won the Scottish Cup Final against a very talented Tryst team.

Handball GB Girls U17 – European Championships When the training squad of 25 was cut to 16 to travel to the European Championship, five of our S5 girls were selected for the U16 GB team.

Scarlett Green, Monica Sloan, Cameron Faulds, Colette Elliott and goalie Hannah McGregor travelled to the Championship in Klaipeda, Lithuania in August – supported by a large family supporters group.

GB was drawn in a group with Ukraine, Finland, Latvia and hosts Lithuania. All the GB players were making their international debut so it was a real baptism of fire. They received quite a shock the first time the players were all introduced individually to the large crowd before the start of each match!

The KA girls scored plenty of goals throughout the week (Monica 9, Cameron 7, Scarlett 5 and Colette 1) while Hannah did an excellent job making some notable saves.

The team achieved a commendable 8th overall (outperforming their ranking), losing out to Italy in their final play off.

KA Coach and Senior GB player Sarah Carrick was the GB U17 joint coach at the tournament. She said “this tournament has given the girls great experience and they now must take this forward and put in the work both on and off the court to makes sure they continue to progress. It was a tough outing for a young squad, playing in their first major tournament - but it was all about gaining experience and building for the future.”

With 5 players making up a third of the GB team it certainly positions Kelvinside Academy as a centre of excellence for Handball.

TRIPS Barcelona Trip - Easter 2017 We were staying in Salou, a small tourist town on the Costa Dorada, and blue skies and sunshine were a welcome sight on arrival at the hotel. With time on our hands pupils explored the hotel grounds and took advantage of the warm sunny weather by taking a dip in the tempting but chilly pool. Being the only hotel residents we enjoyed the facilities and space. An after-dinner stroll along the sea front allowed pupils to check out the beach and the shops nearby.

Day 2 and we had an early start to make the most of the day and enjoy our ‘day off’ in Salou. We planned a glass bottom boat trip in Cambrils to enjoy the views of the coast line and watch for any interesting wild life. Time was then spent exploring Cambrils, playing on the beach and relaxing back at the hotel.

Saturday was our first day in Barcelona and our first stop was Camp Nou, the famous football stadium, which was very busy with Spanish and foreign visitors.

Next stop the famous Gaudi Cathedral ‘Sagrada Familia’ where we explored the building and took plenty of photos. It is a really impressive building and the modern architecture blends in beautifully with the older Gaudi construction.

Onwards to Plaza de Cataluyna were we visited the Gothic area and the impressive Barcelona Cathedral.

The narrow lanes with small flower-filled balconies above added to the elegance and character of the area. Pupils enjoyed wandering around the shops and practising their Spanish with shop assistants and

waiters. Despite the onset of rather heavy rain, we braved Las Ramblas to enjoy the stalls and street entertainment before making a tour of the adjacent famous indoor food market. There was much pupil admiration for the amazing fruit and vegetable displays – less so for the huge choice of weird fish and sheep heads complete with eyeballs.

We managed another early start on Sunday and headed to the oldest park in Barcelona – Tibidabo – situated on the highest hill to the north-west. On the summit there is a small replica of the Rio de Janeiro Statue of Christ on the top of the church and this climb rewarded with spectacular views, although not for the faint hearted. Our last stop in the city was to Parque Guell, a charming public park designed by Gaudi and filled with many examples of his own particular style of building and ceramic tiling designs.

The journey to Montserrat was memorable, showcasing more of the iconic buildings and landmarks of the region, before the rather scary trip up to the monastery offered spectacular views of the mountain itself and the surrounding area. Once at the top of the mountain we enjoyed the rarefied atmosphere of this idyllic religious site and also ventured inside the church to see the famous statue of the black Madonna.

Barcelona is an enormous city with many more places of interest, culture and entertainment. I hope that pupils were inspired to return and enjoy getting to know the city even better.

Viking Adventure In May the J4 class travelled to Vikingar Museum in Largs. This exciting trip allowed the pupils to experience what life would have been like in a Viking house. They had the chance to dress up in traditional Viking dress but most enjoyed hearing about the Viking gods, sagas and the history relating to The Battle of Largs. We finished our trip on the beach imagining we were the Vikings landing on Largs Beach. What a fantastic day for all!

J6 Barcaple Trip

J5 took a trip to Abernethy Ardeonaig in February.

For many this was the first trip away on their own and there was much excitement as pupils boarded the bus.

Already anticipating lots of different activities; such as team-building games, high ropes, archery and much more – life became even more adventurous thanks to an unexpected visit from Jack Frost and Frosty the Snowman. The group were treated to a winter wonderland throughout their stay but the snowy weather far from deterred them as not only did they experience the usual activities, but also igloo-building, snowman competitions and snowball fights galore.

Pupils gained independence on the trip, and enjoyed making their own lunches and taking it in turns to wash up after meals. A fantastic time was had by all.

Junior 6 headed to the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway for their residential trip.

For many of the children this was their first experience of sleeping under canvas and despite a few nerves everyone managed to get some sleep . . . eventually!

“For canoeing I was in a group with my friends and we had to do lots of challenges which were great fun.

We kept asking again and again, ‘When can we go swimming?’ We all wanted to jump in the water. The first person who jumped in screamed because it was so cold. Their lips went slightly blue. I decided that the canoe ride was a better option. I was impressed with Mr Dickenson’s canoeing skills and the fact he went for a swim!” Eleanor Shields

CCF Annual Camp at Wathgill Barracks Annual camp is infamous for being the big finish to the CCF year - full of activities, challenges, lessons and laughs. But it is also known for the “Final Parade” of the 6th years who everyone has looked up to and aspired to be like. Setting examples, being role-models throughout the whole year and keeping everyone in line is a tough task; but the 6th years made it look easy. This is due to the immense respect we all had for them.

Respect is one of the things that CCF instils in a young cadet along with many other great and moral virtues, such as leadership, cohesiveness and teamwork, stepping out of your comfort zone and being responsible.

Annual camp this year was situated at the Wathgill Barracks down in England. The week was packed with excitement and activities, from running through a chest high muddywater filled obstacle course to firing live rounds at the firing range. It will be a camp that sticks with us forever.

S3 and S4 travelled by bus and the drive to Wathgill Barracks was a lengthy 5 hours meaning a very early start for most - however everyone slowly but surely woke up and got the energy surging throughout the whole bus. When we eventually got to our destination we marched to our billets (dormitories), got unpacked and made our beds. By this time it was already getting late so we got an “early” night’s sleep well that’s what we told Captain Ferguson at least!

Next day everyone was up, bright and early, and eager to start the planned activities. First on the list was Command Tasks and Orienteering. We were mixed with two other schools and put into teams and set off on either an orienteering course or a series of challenging command tasks. Did I mention that the orienteering was a timed competition between the teams? Instead of the traditional paper and punch method of marking the orienteering points, we were given a small wireless device that marked our time and course sending all the information back to base. The command tasks were thought-provoking and stimulating, stretching from problem solving to leadership tasks including a blindfolded obstacle course.

Then the long-awaited arrival of the S5 and S6 was over and camp officially started!

Day 2 we were informed by RSM Sandy Johnstone (S6) that we needed to pack a towel and spare clothes for the day’s activities. A rumour went round that we were running a muddy, waterlogged obstacle course. However, the activity was in fact tree-top climbing and activities such as Jacob’s ladder – which supplied Mr Simpson with some cracking photos of terrified faces 20 feet up. Sneakily however, as soon as we let our guard down, we were notified that we were also doing that rumoured obstacle course!

The course was a combination of swinging from ropes, monkey bars and wading through chest high muddy water.

Nevertheless we all got stuck in and had a blast-even though we were told that the water was only ankle deep yet some unlucky people had to end up swimming!

Day 3 was all about accuracy as it was range day. First we practised our accuracy indoors - made possible by a wonderful piece of technology called the DCT. Real GP rifles had been modified to work with a simulated firing range but still retained a form of recoil. These rifles were wired up to a main computer to calculate our scores and automatically “zero” our sights for us. Next we used live rounds. Everyone was buzzing, eager to fire the weapons (some for their first time). I was one of the lucky people to have the honour of clearing the remaining rounds by doing a 30 round ‘watch and shoot’. This is when a target pops up, you shoot it and it folds down. It also transpired that we had a hidden talent at KA as Erin Morgan (S4) beat Matthew Steeples (S6) in the firing competition despite it being her very first time firing a weapon!

Then we started the 12-hour exercise. We received our ration packs (a small box filled to the brim with ready cooked meals and snacks) and a small cooking stove to make dinner.

Following lessons on how to effectively execute an attack from genuine soldiers, we performed section attacks in our sections. Once soaked from head to toe from diving in and out of riverbeds seeking cover, we set off on the remainder of the exercise. This was an all-out capture the flag.

The highlight of the camp was probably having the opportunity to witness a full-scale section attack carried out by the Army Engineers. We watched as they advanced on a location near us with LSW’s (Light Support Weapons), GPMG’s and other rifles providing covering support for their fellow soldiers. To put it into words it was… majestic and awesome!

Time flew past thanks to the excellent activities organised

by Captain Ferguson and Sergeant McAlister and before we knew it the time had come for the final parade. It had crept up on all of us as the 6th years neared their very last parade in the CCF. We spent our entire day polishing parade boots and ironing our uniforms to perfection, as we all wanted to look our best for the final parade.

We had the honour of being inspected by a highly respected Paratrooper Captain, then some words from Captain Ferguson followed by the very final march off. The immensely helpful and knowledgeable 6th years of 2016/17 marched off into the sunset. At this point most people are trying their hardest to keep emotions hidden as I can guarantee everyone’s emotions went through the roof. I think I speak for everyone when I say it was by far the most memorable part of the camp as we said goodbye and farewell to our close friends and respected peers, wishing them all the best with whatever life throws a them.

Wathgill, mark my words, we’ll be back for more!

Royal Navy River Spey Summer Canoe Trip In the first week of the summer break a party of 8 navy cadets, led by Mr Simpson, set out to canoe the length of the River Spey. This was the School’s first canoe/camp expedition on the Spey so we had several preparation training days on the River Tay at Stanley throughout the Summer term.

We set off from Aviemore, with plans to make it all the way to the sea; a distance of roughly 65km.

Mr Simpson led the trip and was assisted by Mr Cuthbertson and Mike Spencer from Paddle Active.

The first day was very pleasant on the water, a couple of rapids but nothing major. Three hours later I was trying to pitch a tent in what felt like freezing cold temperatures surrounded by midges and at that point I began thinking that maybe this could get tough!

Day 2 we woke up to light winds and slightly higher temperatures. There were some moans and groans but we all realised that we had better just get on with it, and so we paddled on. Facing challenges was the key to the whole expedition and it soon became clear that staying with it was the only way forward.

Over the next few days we made our way safely down the Spey, having a lot of fun and sharing really good times. The best part of the trip by far was the “Washing-Machine” which is a fairly big rapid with an 8 foot drop where three currents meet in the middle to create a huge upwards push effect. It was quite a handful in open canoes full of gear and we were left in no doubt where its infamous name came from!

This trip was one that I will hope to do again in years to come. It has really opened my eyes to the fact that not everything is going to be great from the start, and that in any expedition there will be challenging moments with things out with your control-like the Scottish Summer. It also made me even more determined to get as much out of CCF and other school opportunities as I possibly can. Having such a strong CCF at KA gives us all amazing opportunities and I would encourage everyone to get involved and have experiences like we did on the River Spey.

Nursery Fashion Show This new Nursery fundraising event involved members of the whole school community and raised over ÂŁ4000.

The Nursery were able to invest in some fantastic outdoor construction resources and a workbench. This was a big event for our youngest pupils which involved lots of hard work but it was well worth it. The children showed such confidence as they strutted down the catwalk with friends from Senior School.

The John Duff Lodge Due to the generosity of former Rector, John Duff, we are delighted to announce we have managed to secure a new outdoor centre. The John Duff Lodge, is located on our Wilderness Campus in Strathdon.

This is an exciting new adventure for the School and allows us to enable our pupils to fully explore the outdoors. Photographs and a full update will appear in the next issue of Minerva. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Mr Duff.

Parent Teacher Association The PTA, as always, have done a fantastic job this year under the Chairmanship of Mrs Yvonne Craig.

Academicals Academical Weekend March 2017 The weekend started on Friday night with many Academicals and friends of Kelvinside Academy coming together for the Annual Dinner in the Games Hall. President, David Rowand (1985) thanked Alistair Tear (1974) and his wife, Pamela, for their considerable work and effort during Alistair’s reign as Secretary. We are delighted that Alistair is now an Honorary Academical and Pamela an Associate Academical. We were also honoured to have Colin Mair (1972) as our Guest Speaker.

Due to the weather, games on the top pitch had to be altered to a game of touch on the all-weather surface. It was great to see members of our 1st XV playing alongside their fathers and Academicals.

The weekend was rounded off with a fabulous lunch in the Miller Drummond Suite of the Sports Pavilion and an afternoon of International Rugby on the big screen.

Message from the Club Secretary, Ian Nairn (1978) This year it was particularly difficult to find a suitable date in March for the dinner that did not clash with International and Glasgow rugby games.

A vote was taken at the AGM regarding the time of year for the dinner and it has been agreed that the dinner will continue to take place during March and we look at moving the Academical matches to the last weekend in August or first weekend in September. We will then combine these games with the School Annual BBQ.

Annual Dinner The Academical Club Annual Dinner will be held on Friday 23 March 2018. Drinks will be held in the Kennedy Mall prior to dinner being served in the Games Hall. Reunions We would be delighted to see Academicals planning a reunion join us on 23 March at the Annual Dinner. We will be in touch with the relevant year groups to invite them into the School prior to the dinner for refreshments and a tour of Kirklee Road, which includes the newly upgraded Mirrlees Drive and the famous “old gym”. You will also be able to see the many changes that have taken place including the new Fraser Library, Sixth Year Centre and the Kennedy Mall.

A Bisley Brace The Kelvinside Academical Club ended up with not one but two shooting events at Bisley last year.

In the summer Iain Thomson (1979) organised for the first time since the 1980’s a Kelvinside Team to shoot the Veteran Ashburton match. The team achieved 26th place out of 46 at 500 yards.

Of note was Jack Roberts (1978) who had not shot since leaving school and achieved a Highest Possible Score of 50/50 and was awarded a Silver NRA medal! The team also comprised of Cameron Lamont (1994), John Rankin (1979), Ron Scaglione (1997) and Bruce Logan (1987).

London Section News The date has now been set for the Annual London Section Dinner 2017. The Dinner will be held in the Caledonian Club, Halkin Street, London SW1X 7DR on Thursday 16 November 2017.

During last year we decided to consolidate our golf meetings and only one was held at Farnham GC courtesy of Alasdair Hay (1990) who is the general manager of the club. We played the course as two separate 9 hole challenges for our Spring and Autumn meetings.

Alan Abel (1973) took the honours on the front 9 (Spring), while Aidan Dow (1987) was the victor on the back 9 for the Autumn prize.

Jamie Andrew (1987) – Matterhorn Challenge It has long been a dream of mine to climb The Matterhorn. Even by modern standards it is quite a difficult mountain, and for me without hands and feet (I lost them to frostbite following an accident in the French Alps in 1999) it presents a formidable challenge on many levels. Over recent years though I have become more and more determined to become the most disabled person ever to climb that iconic peak.

In August of 2013 I had the chance to make the attempt. My climbing partner was Steve Jones – a good friend and Mountain Guide. Also coming along was a lightweight film team, comprising cameraman Keith Partridge with guides Brian Hall and Gary Dickson, filming for Channel 5.

Although the trip was supposed to be just a preparation and training climb, the conditions were perfect, the forecast was excellent and I was feeling on top form. After a couple of successful days climbing above Grimentz, we decided to grasp the nettle and give it a go.

So we whizzed round to Zermatt, grabbed some provisions and set off through beautiful Alpine meadows up to the Hörnli Hut. The hut was a bit of a building site and deafening with two helicopters shuttling loads of concrete for the new extension, but still the atmosphere of being on such hallowed ground at the foot of the mighty mountain was electrifying.

Predictably sleep was hard to come by and the 4am alarm call was almost a relief.

Steve and I elected to give other climbers a head start and waited till about 4.45 before leaving the hut. This proved a good strategy and meant that when we started the steep initial wall at 5am, the stampede had passed and we had the climb to ourselves. That first wall was brutal and for me, starting

from cold, pulling up on the fixed ropes with just my stumps was a tough wake up and it left me feeling quite jittery.

After that the angle eased off but my jitters didn’t and for the first hour or so I constantly questioned my motivations for being there. Gradually though I settled into the rhythm of climbing and as dawn broke over the Pennine Alps I actually began to enjoy myself and my spirits soared.

The Matterhorn is actually just the wrong kind of climbing for me. If it was a bit steeper I could get my arms onto the rock and climb quickly. If it was less steep I could use my trekking poles and walk upright. As it is, I have to stumble from rock to rock, balancing as best I can, lunging with my arms to stop myself teetering back on my prosthetic legs.

It’s back-breaking work. The terrain is incredibly broken and it is impossible for me to keep up any pace.

Steve and I climbed at a painfully slow rate and even before we reached the Solvay bivouac hut the first of the Zermatt guides and their clients came past us on their way down from the summit.

Slogging interminably upwards, I felt somewhat jealous of those first climbers, heading for beers and rosti at the hut.

Eventually, after what seemed an age, we reached the Solvay refuge. It was now 9.20, twenty minutes after our agreed turn-around time for this point.

Nevertheless, I convinced Steve that I was good to carry on. Progress was still slow though and more and more descending climbers didn’t help matters.

We reached The Shoulder at 4000m where a narrow snowy crest leads to the foot of the steepest fixed rope section of the climb. At the foot of the fixed ropes I looked up at a snarl of climbers queuing to make their way down. I sat down on a rock next to Steve and we took stock.

It was 12 noon. At my current rate it would take two hours to climb the last 250m to the summit.

That would be the easy bit. Most climbers know that coming down the Matterhorn takes as long as going up, and it is when most of the fatal accidents occur. I take longer to descend even than I do to ascend. Travelling light, we were not prepared for a bivi, and so to go on would clearly put us (as Brian put it) firmly into the ‘red zone’.

After several minutes of soul searching and painful deliberation, Steve and I took the decision to go down. Obviously I was gutted. The weather was perfect – not a cloud in the sky, I was feeling good, and the summit seemed to be within touching

distance. How could I retreat now?

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in life it’s that bravery is not always about taking tough challenges, but about taking tough decisions. For me, at this stage in my life, safety is always going to be more important than any summit. Steve and I turned to go down. We started the long, long, exhausting descent back down the Hörnli Ridge. At 7.30pm we stepped safely from the foot of the initial wall.

Of course the disappointment of having got so close to the summit of the Matterhorn and yet so far was tough. Failure I find hard to accept. But then a greater failure for me would be the failure to even try. Even in attempting to climb the Matterhorn I felt that I have achieved something amazing. I had pushed myself, mentally and physically, to the absolute limit and returned home safely to tell my kids all about it. Hopefully also I had done my part to push back the boundaries of what disabled people can achieve.

swept through the region. Finally, as I was about to give up hope yet again, a small weather window emerged in the forecast. Steve Jones was available, as was another friend Steve Monks.

And this time all the pieces just fell into place.

After all the planning, preparation and training the climb went like a dream. Setting out at 5am, I was astonished and elated when just 6 hours later I set my carbon fibre feet onto that tiny summit crest of snow and rock, above all things. A dream come true.

Patience paid off. So that is one of the key messages I want to put across to people. We may be in uncertain political and economic times, and we have certainly come into the habit of expecting instant results in everything we do. But some victories do not come straight away – they take time, effort, trust, persistence and diligence. And for all that, these achievements are so much the better.

Anyway, success is essentially a let-down! The reality of success can, in an instant, take away our dreams. At least in failure we get to hold onto our dreams. My dream of climbing the Matterhorn still lived on.

The following year I was back in The Alps again, but the weather didn’t play ball. And the next year again provided me with no opportunity to set foot on the mountain. I began to feel disheartened. However I decided to give it one last shot. In the summer of 2016, fed up of missing elusive weather windows, I booked a chalet in The Alps for six weeks and moved out with my family for an extended holiday and to wait for conditions to be right.

Still the mountain proved fickle. Late spring snowfall and a poor early summer meant the mountain was slow to come into condition. Then a series of storms

Curling Success Alasdair Schreiber (2011) won a silver medal at the Scottish Men’s Curling Championships as part of Team Mouat, losing out to David Murdoch and his Olympic silver medallist team in the final.

James Whittle (2012) won the English Men’s Curling Championships as part of Team Woolston, going undefeated through the entire tournament. He will represent England at the 2017 European Curling Championships in Switzerland this November.

Colin D R Mair (1972) We would like to thank Colin for donating, to the School Archive, all his father’s speeches and his list of historical dates. Colin J R Mair was Rector at Kelvinside Academy from 1958-1980. In the coming months we plan to publish extracts from these documents, which I am sure you will find both interesting and fun to read. Messrs Mair are pictured in the official Prefects photograph taken in 1971. Father and son are seated next to each other as Rector and Vice-Captain.

David MacDonald (1971) kindly donated a silver ‘Upper III dux medal’ to the school, which his father Gavin was awarded in 1933. David believes that his father won such medals at the end of each class in the senior school, but as he left at the end of Upper V missed out on his name appearing on the school library wall!

David informs us that he attained no such academic heights but has perhaps two claims to fame from his own time at Kelvinside. On the academic front he is the only pupil to have won the Walker Cup twice, which was awarded to the boy (no girls then) who had made the most meritorious progress in the academic year – he reflects he started from a pretty low base point! The second claim to fame is that he was the first pupil to be promoted to the rank of RSM in the CCF, as he was the CSM in 1970 when the rank was introduced. David was invited as a guest to this year’s CCF annual inspection and joined Minerva Educational Trust Chairman, Mel Scott (1979) for a splendid afternoon of reminiscence.

from David, and he provided the following “After leaving school he graduated from the University of Edinburgh and then qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Glasgow. He moved to Perth in 1985 to take up a finance role with General Accident Insurance where he still lives. However two business mergers creating Aviva resulted in him working in both London and Norwich, as well as in Perth. He was lucky enough to be offered early retirement in 2003 and took this opportunity to study Human Relations and Counselling Skills at Dundee University; and he subsequently worked as an associate consultant for an international human resources consultancy in Edinburgh utilising these new skills and interest in people. Most recently he has stepped down after serving nine years as a Trustee Director of the Aviva Staff Pension Fund. He is now fully retired.

He is married to Paddy and has a son and a daughter, and three grandchildren; and is thoroughly enjoying life!”

John Campbell (1944) OBE Congratulations to John on receiving his OBE in the New Year’s Honours list. The following article appeared in the media.

“John Campbell, a Peebleshire farm owner is one of only two Scots to receive a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list.

John is the founder of the Glenrath Farms empire in West Linton, has gained the recognition for his services to farming and charitable service to entrepreneurship.

The company is the biggest business employer in the Borders and has an annual turnover well in excess of £50 million.

It produces, packs and sells almost 1.5 million eggs per day and has now grown to be one of the UK’s leading egg suppliers.

An elated Sir John told us: “I am delighted. We got the letter about three weeks ago and I am very pleased to have been given it.

Sir John started his career on a hill farm in Argyllshire at 15 along with his brother. They were so successful they were soon able to buy out the tenancy.

When he turned 27, he and his wife Cathy decided to go their own way and that’s when they moved to Peeblesshire and acquired Glenrath.

At the farm Sir John has taken an interest in developing young people who are just starting out in the industry and last year he launched a scheme that offers low-interest loans to young farmers wanting to start producing eggs on contract for the business.

The firm is managed by the family, with all of John and Cathy’s four children working for the company.

Their eldest son Ian is now managing director.

Sir John added: “We are the biggest business employers in the Borders and the largest farming business in Scotland, and we employ 240 people.

We just want to keep going and let the business grow.”

“I have been involved in many local things over the years, so this is an unbelievable honour.

And this is not the only recognition Sir John has received for his hard work.

“Especially because only two Scots have been knighted in the New Year’s Honours list with the other one, of course, being Andy Murray.

He has won the UK Farm Business of the Year Award in the House of Commons, twice; has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Egg Commission; has received an honourary fellowship of Scotland’s Rural College and was awarded an OBE at the millennium for services to the farming industry.”

“I will be going to London within six months, but the date hasn’t been announced yet.

“But again I am delighted because it’s a great honour for me, my wife, my staff and the business.

It is excellent for us.”

Andrew Cowan (1980) The School was honoured that Andrew was our Guest Speaker at Prize Giving. Andrew was very inspirational and has made a lasting impression on our students, parents and guest.

Robert Crawford (2001) Congratulations to Robert and his wife, Louise, on the birth of their daughter Lucie Elizabeth Crawford, who was born on 25 October 2016 at 5 pounds 12 ounces. 4 months on she had more than double that weight.

Colin Crichton FRICS (1975) has been appointed Chairman of the Lords Taverners in Scotland.

The UK Charity was founded in 1950 by cricket–loving actors at Lords Cricket Ground and has close links with business and the entertainment profession. The ethos of the Charity is to have fun but remain ever mindful of young people who do not share the privileges many of us enjoy, through the requirement of special needs, or being socially and economically disadvantaged.

The charity continues to raise funds to help such youngsters through sport, fundraising partnerships and events to give these youngsters where possible, a “sporting chance” in life. The Charity is looking to forge new links with sponsors and partners in Scotland.

Gordon Ronald (1979) is a regular visitor to Glasgow from San Francisco but this year he attended the Annual Dinner for the first time with friend Guy Robertson (1979). He met up with other classmates Melville Scott, David Sturgeon, Kenny Hill, Richard Barrie and Garry Smith, none of whom he had seen since school. Gordon works for SAP Software and travels between the headquarters in Heidelberg and his home in San Francisco. Guy is unable to give any more detail than that as Gordon’s working life has always been a mystery. He also managed to fit in a game of golf at Glasgow Golf Club, watch Rangers at Ibrox and the Scotland Rugby International in a West End pub.

What more could a man ask for?

Martyn Robertson (2000) is living in a little village called Sorn in East Ayrshire with his partner Chris and their two year old son Rudi. Since leaving KA he has enjoyed many jobs all around the hospitality industry and now finds himself looking after the beautiful 14th century Sorn Castle. In this role he looks after the day to day running of the Castle including the shooting side of things in the winter months and their ever expanding wedding business during the summer months.

Scott Younger (1958) supplied us with the following “In 1958, one of our main rival schools in sports was Ayr Academy which had in their rugby and cricket teams, as appropriate, Mike Denness (to become Capt of England, cricket), Ian (Mighty Mouse) McLaughlan (Scottish rugby), and John Ure, Scottish football cap at centre half. Jim was Capt of KA Cricket in 1958, and I was V- Capt and opening bowler. We played Ayr that year at Cambusdoon and were pleased to dismiss Mike Denness for 14, after Mike pushed a ball from me to mid-off to Jim, who picked up faultlessly and unerringly threw for a run out. (I believe the match was drawn but the records, if they still exist, would tell the truth!)”.

OBITUARy Adam Bergius (1939) born March 26, 1925 and died March 3, 2017. The following obituary appeared in several Scottish newspapers.

Adam Bergius, who has died aged 91, was one of the exceptionally daring men who manned midget submarines known as X-craft during the Second World War. At 21.20 on the night of July 30 1945, in the Mekong Delta, the submarine Spearhead slipped the tow on the midget submarine XE-4. The Australian Lieutenant Max Sheen DSO, commanding XE-4, had orders to trawl for and cut the underwater telephone cables from Saigon to Singapore and Hong Kong to Saigon, thus forcing the Japanese to use wireless communications, which could be intercepted and deciphered.

For this difficult task, hampered by the tide and in rough weather, Sheen’s crew consisted of his first lieutenant, Sub Lieutenant Ben Kelly from Edinburgh, Chief Engine Room Artificer “Ginger” Coles from Newbury, diver Sub-Lieutenant Ken Briggs and the 20 year old Scot, Sub Lieutenant Adam Bergius.

The 30 ton, 52ft midget submarine, powered by a Gardner diesel, completed the 40 mile underwater journey toward Saigon, at which point Shean began to drag a steel grapnel and chain weighing about 800lb along the sea bed. He made a number of runs through waters crowded by fishing junks, before being brought up suddenly as the grapnel caught the Singapore cable.

Briggs, wearing a heavy diving suit, was the first to leave the submarine. He returned soon with a short length of cable as evidence of a job well done.

About an hour later, the Hong Kong cable was found, by further trawling, at much greater depth and Bergius emerged from the X-craft.

He recalled “The cable lay about 40ft from where our submarine had come to rest. The water was a bit muddier than Loch Striven where we had done our training, but I didn’t have much difficulty in finding the cable.”

Bergius’s air-powered cutter failed however, and, exhausted by the effort, he was obliged to return to XE-4 to rest. Entering the wet-and-dry chamber

Bergius was offered the chance to abort his solo mission on the seabed, but, after a spell of breathing mind-clearing air rather than pure oxygen, he resolved to leave the midget submarine, taking with him a replacement cutter.

In that period underwater breathing apparatus was in its infancy, the water was deeper than expected and only a short time before two highly trained divers had been lost attempting to cut cables at similar depths. However, Bergius was successful at the second attempt, and returned with a length of cable as proof that it had been cut. He proudly kept it as a souvenir.

For gallantry, perseverance and outstanding skill he was awarded the DSC. Adam Kennedy Bergius – “Jock”, as he was known in submarines – was born in Glasgow into the Teacher’s whisky family. His love of the sea began during summer holidays at Kirn, Argyll, in his rowing boat Puddock. Later he sailed in the motor-ketch Dodo IV, designed for his father by William Fife III. The Navy would turn him into a consummate navigator, and postwar he crewed in Latifa (Fife’s most famous yacht) in the New York to Bermuda race, and sailing became a lifelong affair.

Bergius joined the Royal Navy in 1942 and after seaman training at HMS Granges near Ipswich, he was drafted to the auxiliary minelayer Armageddon, based in the Kyle of Lochalsh, and employed laying the Northern Barrage, a minefield in the Iceland Greenland gap.

He underwent officer training at HMS King Alfred, where in 1944 the 19 year old newly promoted midshipman saw a notice about special and hazardous service, and volunteered without knowing what the service was. Soon he found himself on a train to Ardtaraig House on Loch Striven, then known as HMS Varbel II, which was home to the 12th Submarine Flotilla.

Bergius trained as a diver there and at the Kyles Hydropathic Hotel practising exiting and entering X-craft using a small floodable chamber aptly called the wet-and-dry chamber, and learning to cut underwater nets and place explosives.

In November 1944 he travelled from Barrow-inFurness to Faslane by a special train pulling XE-4,

which was heavily disguised as a food container, while he and the rest of the crew sat in a first class carriage. Six XEs were readied for service in the Far East and redesignated as the 14th Submarine Flotilla under the command of Captain WR “Tiny” Fell. They embarked in the New Year of 1945 at Port Bannatyne in the former SS Clan Davison known in wartime as the depot ship HMS Bonaventure.

Bonaventure steamed via the West Indies and the Panama Canal to Pearl Harbour, where it soon became apparent that senior officers of the US Navy did not want the X-craft, considering them to be suicide weapons and resenting the fact that they did not have a version. However, at lower levels of command Captain Fell, their cheerful and determined commander, was received with enthusiasm and respect and obtained permission to proceed to Australia.

Bonaventure anchored for a warm-water workup at Whitsunday Island in the Great Barrier Reef, which Bergius found to be a wonderland of colour and light, teeming with corals, sea plants and fish of every shape and colour. He could swim as freely as fish and, breathing pure oxygen, made no noisy bubbles to destroy the peaceful underwater world.

On one exercise, however, he stood on a stingray and the barbed sting lodged in his calf. His friend “Ginger” Coles, sat with him through the subsequent convalescence. On another dive, he found an anchor cable going down outside a reef and pulled himself down until he was amazed to discover what appeared to be an old sailing ship.

There were two men on the foredeck and he was just about to strike up a conversation – hallucination is an early sign of oxygen poisoning – when he heard the words of his fellow diver ring out “You’re all right, carry on normal breathing Sir.” It was a command which he was happy to follow for some 70 years.

Postwar Bergius joined Teacher’s. His natural role was in sales and marketing and he enjoyed promoting the brand worldwide. Though he rose to be chairman, he was not happy when the firm was taken over by Allied Brewers in the 1980s, and his carefree style was cramped by what he described as the “fun-less grim world of over-educated sales advisers.” In 1995 he published a light-hearted book, Make Your Own Scotch Whisky, including a spoof recipe.

From 1963 he lived at Glencreggan on the west coast of Kintyre, with views to the islands of Gigha, Islay and Jura, and half a mile of foreshore, rough shooting, farmland and fishing in a small loch. The house’s drawing room was fitted with a wooden sprung floor where he hosted ceilidhs. In the late 1970s he added 1,300 acres of Oronsay to the Glencraggan estate.

Another love of his life was a 1926 British racing green Bentley which he bought for a song in 1949 and nicknamed “the Hippo”. Bergius thought nothing of plunging into its innards or scouring Glasgow’s scrap merchants for spares. The Hippo was sold in the 1980s but, thanks to Bergius’s maintenance, is still regularly exhibited.

In an after-dinner speech in 2013, Bergius reflected that to serve in submarines was to become a member of the strongest, most loyal union of men, and that the greatest joy of all is that companionship and feeling part of a team.

He married Fiona Sillars in 1951, who predeceased him in 2011, and he is survived by their four sons and a daughter. His brother, W Cecil Bergius (1935), was drowned when the destroyer Gould was torpedoed in March 1944.

After his time in X-craft, Bergius piloted the steam tug Empire Sam and a convoy of barges and small craft to Hong Kong on what he called a pleasure cruise through the Philippines. Next he was navigator of Spearhead in which he spent a week at sea searching for Japanese on the surrounding islands and monitoring the blossoming smuggling trade.

Obituary Samuel Grieve Brown (1964) 21.11.1946 – 16.03.2017 is survived by his loving wife, Denise, three children David, Jennifer, and Iain and two grandchildren Mikayla and Lachlan and would have loved to meet his latest grandson, Rowan.

The following obituary was written by Murray Wright (1979) I was connected to Grieve several years ago via the Academical database of Academicals living in Australia. I was looking to try and arrange some gettogethers for people living in and around Sydney.

I called him to introduce myself. To say he was enthusiastic about the idea would be an understatement! His sing song voice combined with his soft Scottish accent was filled with warmth, energy, fun and encouragement. He was always an enthusiastic participant in our Sydney dinners and it was a good excuse for him to travel the 2 hours to Sydney and stay with one of his kids living in Sydney.

Grieve was a delight to be with. He talked with everyone and joined in the serious, the light hearted and even the way out there metaphysical discussions. He always had something worthwhile to contribute drawing from his experiences in Scotland, Australia and his time in Fiji. His greatest enthusiasm, aside from talk of his family, was saved for talk of Scotland and the Kelvinside stories we shared.

Grieve’s greatest contribution to the group was always making space for others, asking questions, listening, never judging, and making the people around him feel valued. When I think about it now, I never heard him say a bad word about anyone or anything. I always enjoyed sitting next to him to catch up, and share old and new stories.

Whilst Grieve had been sick for a number of years, many of us did not know, he never complained or brought any attention to himself. He would be there in his fun, warm and loving way with the only noticeable difference being that he was not able to

enjoy a glass of his favourite red wine with us!

As is often the case, it is only at a funeral you learn of the man.

He held a strong faith which he shared with Denise, and was very involved in his beloved church. The overflowing church was a testament to how well he was regarded and loved in his community. He had been retired for about 5 years and gave himself to many causes, in particular working in the local prison offering grace and hope to men in prison looking to explore their faith.

Whilst Grieve left Scotland at a young age to take up life in Australia, his heart was still very much in Scotland, particularly Islay, which, although from Glasgow, he had adopted as his Scottish home. His career as a geologist took him to remote areas in Queensland, (where he met Denise) the Northern Territory, King Island off Tasmania, Fiji, New South Wales, and finally settling down close to Newcastle.

It was clear his time at Kelvinside was very dear to him, in fact, recognising the distinct colours of the Academical tie, his family knew who I was before I could introduce myself!

He had prepared a message for his friends, a message filled with humility and joy for the life he had. There was no sadness, no thoughts for himself, just his strong faith in the knowledge that he was going to a better place and reminding us to enjoy our life. Whilst this was a sad occasion, Grieve’s spirit brought great warmth, joy and that everpresent sense of fun.

Our next Sydney Gathering is in a few days, there will be some moments of sadness as we realise that there is an empty chair, however, Grieve will be with us in spirit and he will be part of our stories as we raise a glass or two to his memory. I hope, whether you knew him or not, you will have a glass in memory of a passionate Kelvinside Academical and a great, loving, human being.
