AUTUMN 2013 competition for places at leading Scottish universities from candidates from the rest of the UK and abroad. The second is that Scottish universities will want to charge tuition fees in line with the rest of the UK; a ‘yes’ vote this time next year may not alter that.

Scottish universities are truly world class institutions and they educate students for employment in a global market. At present, few Kelvinside students want to go to university south of the border – perhaps understandably.

There are just two of our leavers destined for Newcastle University this year. However, it’s never been a better time to apply to Russell Group universities in England. A number of excellent European universities also offer courses taught in English. We should at least make our students aware that opportunities exist not only south of the border but also in Europe and beyond.

Dear Parents , Academicals and Friends The results of Kelvinside pupils in SQA examinations were among many reasons to be cheerful during this wonderful summer.

Although there were so many exciting events and developments – an expedition to Morocco and CCF camps, the newly refurbished Mall and superb new Nursery at Balgray - I was especially delighted that the vast majority of our leavers won places at their first choice university.

The most popular destination was Edinburgh University, where members of the class of 2013 will read courses as varied as Medicine, Law, Astrophysics, Engineering and Architecture, International Relations and International Business with a Language. The second most popular destination was Glasgow University, closely followed by St Andrews. Six students won places for Medicine and Dentistry.

I see no evidence of universities discriminating against candidates from independent schools. That’s certainly not the experience of Kelvinside Academy candidates. But there are threats on the horizon. The first is fierce 2

Preparing young people for living and working in a global community is at the heart not only of the move to wireless connectivity and 1:1 devices throughout the school, it is behind the new S6 Leadership programme.

We have designed an exciting new course, called Professional Studies, based on the skills students will need when they leave school.

It includes the opportunity to take Open University modules, learn undergraduate research skills, and to hone personal and social skills through community service, enterprise and leadership. I have written the core leadership unit for this programme and it is on the school’s fantastic new VLE. Using the Frog technology is intuitive; adding video, image and text, embedding websites and links to files, gives teachers new possibilities in presenting the curriculum to pupils. But it’s much more than moving from textbook to tablet: Frog is an educational tool which teachers and pupils can use not only to access information but also to share and collaborate, solve problems and think about the world in different ways.

Nursery

New state of the art nursery The start of the 2013-2014 session heralded a new beginning for The Kelvinside Academy Nursery, which moved from Kirklee Road to a purpose built, state of the art facility at our Balgray Campus. It offers all year round child care for 3 and 4 year olds.

The new Nursery boasts two large openplan play areas with learning, baking, messy play, technology and physical play spaces. In addition to the Nursery’s secure outdoor play area, the children also have wider use of the facilities at Balgray, including all weather surfaces, playing fields and wild gardens.

Head of Nursery, Tracy Nugent has been at

the Nursery since 2001 and is a qualified primary school teacher with further specialist qualifications in Early Years Education and Leadership & Management in Education. She and her staff of highly qualified Nursery Nurses were extremely excited to welcome the current children to their new Nursery home and see their faces light up with joy as they ran about discovering the different play and learning zones.

A wonderful start to the future As well as enjoying the fun of bouncy castles, face painting and fair rides, all children from J1 to S6 entered into the competitive spirit of the School Highland Games. Flying fantastic House Flags, they represented their Houses in events like wellie throwing, kilted dash, obstacle course and tug o’war. Buchanan were victorious in the Senior School with Colquhoun taking the honours in the Junior School.

Competitors enjoyed music accompaniment from ‘The Box Cars’. With such a lot going on, the hard working PTA team kept everyone fed and watered at the BBQ and home baking stall.

The sun shone, the building gleamed and the Kelvinside Academy community turned out in force on Saturday 24 August to celebrate the opening of the new Nursery at Balgray.

After a special welcome from The Rector, the wonderful double act of Scott Cummings in S6 and Milly Hailstone in the Nursery joined Manager Tracy Nugent to cut the Kelvinside blue ribbon. School Vice-Captain Scott has attended the school from nursery level and is aiming to study Maths at university next year.

Millie is one of our youngest pupils and has her future ahead of her as she progresses up the school. Whilst the star attraction remained the fantastic new facility, Peppa Pig and her brother George made celebrity appearances accompanied by a very large ‘Wee Kelvin’ Bear.

It was a proud day for the whole school community and a fitting celebration for such an inspiring new centre for learning at Kelvinside Academy.

Junior School Junior School Music Competition - June 2013 The Gilchrist Theatre was packed to the rafters as parents came to take in the best that our choirs, orchestra and soloists can offer in a programme that was marked by an extensive range of musical styles.

From drumming to ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ to the most exquisite rendition of Dance of the Elves on the piano, the performances were an impressive snapshot of the depth of talent and the hard work that goes on in our Music-making.

J5 Horticultural Pizzas As part of Junior 5’s topic on Plants they grew herbs and salad in the school garden.

They then made their own pizzas using the herbs they had grown to flavour the tomato sauce and a wonderful fresh side salad!

Nestled behind the stand and surrounded by green open spaces, visitors of all ages appeared to catch their breath in delight as they stepped inside the new building, awed by the tremendous open space, enviable outside play areas and the state of the art facilities. Current school pupils and parents, academicals, former teachers and prospective parents were all keen to look round and see this wonderful new addition to Kelvinside Academy, which was the vision of the board of governors, trustees and senior leadership team.

Junior School Playground Markings come to the Junior School The main remit for this year’s Playground Committee was to organise markings for the playground. We began by finding out what the Junior School pupils wanted by designing an online survey. Once we had reviewed the results, we invited three companies to submit a quote. The playground markings were installed at the beginning of the Summer Term and have been a great success. One of the new markings was a game called King Squares. The Playground Committee taught the game to J4, 5 and 6.

Sarah Wright (S5) - Getting to the heart of the matter at Stanford Sarah attended the Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills Summer Internship at Stanford and has given us the following account of her time there.

“When I first applied in an extremely cold January for the Surgical Skills Summer Internship at Stanford, the dream of warm, sunny California was a long way off.

However, in mid-June it became a reality as I packed my bags and set off for Stanford University Medical School. The size of the campus and its buildings can overwhelm you but my time was limited and there was much to be done. Thirty students from all over the world, from California to Shanghai, were thrown together in Kairos House, our dorm for the next four weeks.

All the children had a spoken part in this musical. It was performed as a finale to the children’s topic on ‘Fairyland’. A very appreciative audience of mums, dads and other relatives watched spell-bound as Junior 1 held their attention with a rousing performance. It had a bit of everything – great singing, good dancing, a really scary (and hairy!!) wolf and – of course – a happy ending.

Nothing could have prepared us for the intensity of the course and the commitment that was expected from us. Daily lectures in anatomy were supplemented by guest lectures on topics from eye surgery to space medicine, followed by a minimum of three hours in the wet lab in the bowels of Stanford Hospital.

The wet lab was where we finely tuned our sewing skills to prepare for the final task: Aortic Valve Replacement under the watchful eye of Scientist Paul Chang.

Everyone practised and perfected one and two handed knot tying. Palming of instruments became second nature.

‘Coronary Heart Disease’ were no longer just words ‘in Greys’ Anatomy. We were studying and practising the skills to save lives in the future. Evenings were spent researching and studying. Individual Projects were prepared for presentations in Week Two, in my case on Multiple Sclerosis. The main challenge was the Week Four presentation by groups of three students on creating alternative methods for curing an Atrial Septal Defect without opening the chest.

It wasn’t all work and no play. The 4th of July was a huge celebration: barbeques, fireworks and many proud Americans.

Group trips to San Francisco, sight-seeing and crabbing under the Golden Gate Bridge were just a few of the things that we got up to. This experience has not only given me life learning skills but also friendships which I will cherish forever”.

morocco Summer 2013 Wifi and working toilets!

At the end of last term a group of intrepid Gold Duke of Edinburgh pupils and one excited but apprehensive teacher set out for the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. None of us knew what was in store; with the greatest concern reserved for mobile reception and working toilets. By the end of the trip, we had all learnt something about ourselves; for me it was wondering if there would be mules available for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions in Scotland!

Not to sound too clichéd but it was a life changing 11 days. We were based near the town of Imlil in the heart of the Atlas Mountains. After a day of planning, packing and preparation we set off for the expedition phase of the trip. We spent four days walking in the baking Moroccan sun and were tested in different ways to walking in the Scottish Mountains. The greatest challenge was to complete the brunt of the walking before it got too hot, though most of us slept through our 5:30am alarms one morning which meant a bit of a frantic rush to be ready on time. The greatest feeling for me during the expedition was a cold bottle of coke at the top of a mountain pass at 2,500m. Having spent two hours hiking up a steep, dusty mountain under the intense African sun, I

arrived at a shack selling this sugary nectar of the Gods: a hot, sweaty, red faced mess.

By the end of the four days we were all very glad to return to base camp. Having washed in ice cold rivers for the past few days we were all looking forward to a hot shower, electricity and that all important wifi!

With the expedition completed we now entered the residential phase of the trip.

Our team would be working with pupils from schools from Fife on projects in a nearby village. We would be building an incinerator for the village and making concrete steps for easier access to the Primary School.

We visited families to find out about their day to day life, making bread, a tagine and milking a cow. The pupils from KA acquitted themselves exceedingly well; whether it was the back breaking work of lugging 50kg bags of cement or simply playing with the local children.

RAF Leeming This summer cadets from the RAF section visited RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire.

Our excursions were varied and exciting, including a trip to the UK’s main missile defence radar station and a go on the Krypton Factor assault course. We went all over the extensive base (it’s more like a town) and visited many departments including JFACTSU (Joint Forward Air Controller Training and Standards Unit) and the exciting No. 100 Squadron, who act as the “bad guys” in RAF training exercises.

We mixed with cadets from nearby in Yorkshire and some from as far afield as Qatar. Our Lance Corporal, Ben Shearar, joined the other NCOs in helping out and looking after cadets. All of the cadets who went to RAF Leeming had an amazing time and learnt many new skills. We are all looking forward to the next opportunity to go to camp.

The memories of Morocco will stay with us for years to come. As the pupils enter the next phase of their lives, they can look back at what they achieved in such a short time and know that they can overcome any obstacles that life throws at them.

Minerva and Little Owl the Rowing Club has received a fantastic donation to enable the purchase of two boats, more ergo rowers and a set of blades. the Four boat is named ‘minerva’ and the two is called ‘Little Owl’. Both were ‘christened’ at a small ceremony at the Glasgow Schools Boathouse prior to the Glasgow Schools Regatta, where there were a number of fine performances by Kelvinside academy crews. With very smart rowing kit, blades painted in Kelvinside colours and now its own boats, our rowers can look forward to a very successful second season on the water.

Equestrian Society off at a Gallop!

Clay will be competing in the Scottish Formula Ford Championships this year and is working towards the British Championships.

Eden trains six days a week for the City of Glasgow Swim team. On Saturday 24th August, Eden swam half a mile across Loch Lomond as one of the youngest participants in the ‘Great Scottish Swim’. This was her first open water swim event and she thoroughly enjoyed taking part and raising over £100 for Macmillan Cancer.

Kelvinside Equestrian Society took off through the starting gate back in May with ten enthusiastic riders, has flourished at a gallop since and is now well in to its second term.

Clay started his racing career karting 2 years ago at Larkhall and earlier this year competed in the Scottish Karting Championships, finishing in 3rd place.

Clay is the youngest driver to enter Formula Ford and we shall watch his racing career with great interest. The race training gained in Formula Ford has long been recognised by F3 teams as a vital commodity; Formula Ford champions from four of the last five seasons have graduated to F3.

Kelvinside Chef d’Equipe, Penny McArthur, who has more years of horsey experience than she cares to remember, firmly believes that whilst the riding skills are very important, it matters just as much that students learn how to form a bond with their ponies and how to look after them.

Friday riding is going to continue up to October half-term; other plans include trail riding at Ardfern and a visit to the vet school. Kelvinside hosts the exciting Scottish Schools Equestrian Extravaganza in partnership with Ingliston Country Club in May, where some thirty school teams take part. There is a prospect of a Kelvinside team taking part next year, following on from the great solo performance of Poppy MacGeachy at this year’s show.

Qasim Ali (SP) Qasim has won the Andrew Jamieson Trophy at Pollok Golf Club, a competition open to all junior members from age 11 to 18. Qasim’s net score of 10 under par made him overall winner of the club trophy - with the further reward of a new Galvin Green jacket from his father!

Based at Liz and Pat Rennie’s Lomondside Stud at Drymen on a Friday afternoon after school and kindly delivered there by Ian Nicholson, the riders have an intensive riding lesson for an hour and then a further hour to learn stable management and horse care - this part of their training leading towards a Certificate in Stable Management.

Rachael Scott (S6) Many congratulations to Rachael, who was selected to represent Scotland as a cox for both the Scottish Schools Quad and the Four at the Home International Match between Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales in Nottingham in July. Rachael is Kelvinside Academy’s first rowing international and is Captain of Rowing this year.

We aim to have a small number of visiting speakers over the winter months and riding will begin again in May 2014. If we have fired your enthusiasm, please contact Mrs McArthur in the Science Department and saddle up with us next year.

Olivia Gillespie (S1) Olivia has qualified for Horse of the Year show which is held during October. It was over three rounds and the 3rd round ended up with 2 verticals at 1m40; the rest of the track was 1m35. Well done Olivia!

Scarlett Green (S2) competed in the High Jump event at the Scottish Athletics Championships. After battling wind and rain and 33 other competitors in a marathon two hour competition, she finished in an excellent 4th place, only a few cm below her PB. She has a very bright future ahead.

army Section Summer Camp 45 Cadets made the journey south to Warcop Camp in Cumbria. For cadet RSM Hamish Miller and the other S6 cadets it was their last trip; for S3 cadets it was their first taste of centralised camp, mixing with other cadets from around the UK. For the full seven days we were very fortunate to be paired with the well trained and enthusiastic CCF from Wilson’s School in London. The pairing became a highlight of the week with a lot of good humoured rivalry and pranks between the contingents’ cadets and between the officers!

Some activities were familiar but good instructors and new settings made raft building with the Engineers as good as it’s ever been. The Adventure training package offered a huge selection of activities for cadets to choose, including Ghyll Scrambling (canyoning) which Major Fischbacher described to cadets as scrambling; this resulted in Robbie Dempster and co. coming back very wet from what they’d expected to be a hillwalk… sorry boys.

Gordon Stewart (S6) Rocky Mountain Gordon was selected as one of only twelve cadets from throughout the UK to attend the Canada Cadet Exchange ‘Rocky Mountain’ Summer Course and has written the following article about his experience.

Cadet Exchange If there was one word to sum up the Rocky Mountain cadet exchange it would be ‘painful’! Yes, it was painful but it was also truly rewarding. It was billed as a leadership and challenge course and it was certainly that.

“I don’t fancy yours...”

Although we’ve come to expect high praise for our cadets, this year instructors were especially complimentary about the level of skill and enthusiasm of the Kelvinside Contingent. Being singled out for excellent weapons safety drill and for their tactical appreciation on the platoon attacks was a good reward for Hamish’s leadership and the enthusiasm his team of S6 cadets have engendered the year.

At the end of the week of blank firing exercises, first aid, contact drills, ambushes, rafting, paintballing, live firing and navigating, we held our final parade on the square and, for the first time, we invited another contingent to join us. Given how closely the cadets had worked together and how similar in skills and outlook, it proved a good match and provided a fitting end to an excellent week. A farewell speech was made to thank the S6 cadets for their four years of service to CCF before RSM Hamish Miller fell them out to march off the square for the last time.

The Rocky Mountain course is the most challenging Canadian cadet camp aimed at the oldest and most senior cadets. The British army selects 12 cadets each year to attend the 6 week course in the Canadian Rockies.

The selection process begins with the submission of a personal statement leading to a selection panel and then a final national selection. I was grateful to be selected and represent not only Kelvinside but the UK cadets.

A high level of fitness was required and was tested immediately on arrival, at high altitude. Fortunately my preparation paid off and I qualified in the top fitness level;

this enabled me to participate in the most challenging expeditions; for example, instead of camping beside the glacier, we camped on the glacier using specialist equipment.

The camp was structured around a series of week-long activities. This enabled us to hone our skills in multi-pitch rock climbing, white water kayaking, glacier trekking, navigation, wilderness first aid, survival (including the use of pepper spray for bears) and horseback riding; surprisingly I was awarded best cadet for the week of riding - it must have been the stylish way I fell off my horse.

The Rocky experience has vastly improved not only my technical knowledge but my organisational skills and ability to lead others.

Academicals LAURA BEATON (2005) got engaged in December 2012 and started a new job as a Research Assistant at the University of Dundee in February 2013.

CHARLES BERRY (1970) has been appointed to succeed Lord Smith of Kelvin as Chairman of Weir Group with effect from the end of 2013. He previously ran Scottish Power’s UK operations and has also held boardroom positions with Thus and Eaga. Currently Charles holds a number of non-executive roles including Chairman of aerospace and industrial manufacturing group Senior and as board member of the Securities Trust of Scotland.

JAMIE BRECHIN (2010) Following an apprenticeship, Jamie is running his own company jbdecor in Glasgow with a very extensive client base.

SCOTT McLAREN (1993) recently moved to Kilmacolm. He married in 2012 and still works in Glasgow. Scott is looking forward to the KA Class Reunion in September.

R HUNTER REID (1965) was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to Architecture and Community Engagement in Glasgow (Milngave, Dunbartonshire). He is Project Co-ordinator at Maryhill Housing Association.

GORDON I M RONALD (1978) recently changed jobs returning to software company, SAP, following a 10 year stint at Microsoft.

He strongly encourages current KA pupils to consider a career in the technology industry.

D SCOTT RUTHERFORD (1996), former School Captain, passed the Diploma Examination in Zurich for membership of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and is now qualified as a European specialist in small animal surgery. Scott is currently working at North Downs Specialist Referrals in Surrey, one of the leading multidisciplinary small animal referral centres in the UK.

EMMA STEEPLES (2013) competed at Bisley as a member of the Scotland Under-21 Shooting Team in August and was subsequently selected to shoot as an individual in the Great Britain Team in an international competition. Congratulations to Emma on gaining her first full Great Britain Cap.

GRAHAM SELLAR (1987) has worked as a Banker with Santander in London since 1996.

He is married with two children, Jessica 12 and Eddie 9.

FRED LAING (1968) and STEWART LAING (1964) announced recently that they had reached an amicable agreement to split the family owned whisky company Douglas Laing & Co. They inherited the firm from their father more than 40 years ago and will now be at the helm of two separate commercial entities, Douglas Laing & Co. and Hunter Laing & Co., that feature key roles for their respective children.

IAN P LIVINGSTON (1982) announced on 19 June 2013 that he would leave his post as Chief Executive of BT Group to take up a new role as Minister for Trade and Investment in the UK Government. He became a member of the House of Lords as a life peer on 15 July 2013 with the title Baron Livingston of Parkhead. When at school, Ian was a member of the KA team which entered and won the Royal Bank of Scotland fantasy shareinvestment competition, turning £10,000 into £30,000 in just 10 months.

GEORGE ALEXANDER WALKER LAMOND (c. 1896) George was born on 23 July 1878 and educated at KA and the University of Glasgow where he studied to become a Civil Engineer.

Thereafter he served an apprenticeship with Formans & McCall at 160 Hope Street, specialising in railway engineering and bridge building. George was still in his 20s when he had the opportunity of a lifetime to work for the internationally respected firm of Sir John Airs on the ongoing project damming the River Nile at Asswan in Egypt.

George returned home at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 and was given a commission in the Royal Engineers and sent to the Western Front where he was attached to the Regiment’s Inland Water Transport and Docks Section. In the summer of 1916 he was sent to Mesopotamia with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel to be in charge of the construction and organisation of the new port and works at Basra from September 1916 and was mentioned in despatches by Sir Stanley Maud. Mesopotamia was notorious as an unhealthy area and working beside water often meant catching fever. George became very ill after succumbing and was sent to hospital in Sri Lanka where unfortunately his condition worsened and he suffered an attack of Pneumonia and died on 25 February 1918. He was buried at the Colombo (Kanatte) General Cemetery.

George’s sporting ability had become evident when he was in his teens. He played for the Kelvinside Academicals team at the age of 16.

He played centre three-quarter in inter-city matches and in Glasgow City team against the Rest of Scotland team in 1896, playing throughout the following few years. His skill was recognised and 1899 he was chosen to play for his country, earning his first International Cap in the team playing Wales.

He was known for his ability to drop-kick with either foot when running at speed, for making openings and then feeding players on his wings. His second cap came with the match with England the same year, but his international career was halted when he left the country to work in Egypt.

STEWART TOWERS (1993) gave up his role as Data Systems Manager for Health Protection Scotland in 2009 to begin an MSc in Forestry at the University of Aberdeen. He graduated with commendation and started a career with Andrew Nicol Chartered Forester as an Assistant Forest Manager/Harvesting Manager from 2011 to 2013. In June he was appointed Planning Forester in Scottish Lowlands District for Forestry Commission Scotland. He married Kelly in 2012. His Dad, G A (Sandy) Towers, former Principal Teacher of Geography at KA, continues to enjoy his retirement as grandparent to his daughter’s three children.

DEATHS We record with regret the deaths of the following Academicals.

IAN M McLAREN (1964) died peacefully at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow on 27 April 2013. He is survived by his son Scott (1993) and his daughter Lindsey to whom we express our sympathy and condolences.

GREGOR WALLACE (1994) is a Chartered Surveyor and after graduating from the University of Paisley in 2000, he moved to London to take up an appointment with the French Bank, BNP Paribas. He still tries to do as much sport as he can including badminton, tennis and running, and he enjoys London’s social scene, museums and culture although he does miss the Scottish scenery. He remains best friends with fellow classmate, COLIN PATERSON (1994), who emigrated to Brazil in 2008 and is married to Erica. Gregor is hoping there will be a 1994 Class Re-union as he would like to catch up with old school friends.

KEIR SMART (1971) died peacefully at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow on 27 July 2013, surrounded by his family, after a long illness bravely borne. He was the beloved husband of Marie, adored father of Catriona, and dearest brother of Carolyn and Susan to whom we express our sympathy and condolences.
