STONERIDGE PERUVIANS WOULD LIKE TO WISH THE BEST OF LUCK TO ALL THE EXHIBITORS OF THE CANADIAN NATIONAL PERUVIAN PASO CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW! WWW.STONERIDGEPERUVIANS.COM

Message from the President Dear exhibitor and Guest Thank you for your attendance here with us this weekend to celebrate the 35th annual Canadian National Show of the Peruvian Horse in Canada. If you are a breeder or a seasoned veteran, thank you for your on-going support of the PHAC and for promoting the Peruvian horse in Canada. The Peruvian Horse Association is overseen by an elected Board of Directors, which in the last year consisted of Myself, Mimi Busk Downey, Rick Cones, Sherri Rosia and Cathy Taggart. These directors are elected annually, at the AGM and the term of service consists of 2 years. This year’s AGM and elections will take place here at the show grounds at the same time as the annual Awards ceremony. At this meeting, you will also be given opportunity for input in decisions like future venues and future judge selection. If you are a PHAC member in good standing, please plan to attend this year’s AGM . If your membership has lapsed, this would be a great time to renew it. If you are a guest and new to the Peruvian horse in Canada, welcome to our show. You are amongst friends. The Peruvian Horse, as its name implies is from Peru, where it has a history of nearly 500 years. It was introduced by General Pizzaro, was bred and refined over the centuries as a light and agile riding horse, for the sole purpose of transporting its owner over long distances in comfort and style. Its four beat lateral gait makes it the indisputable smoothest and most comfortable riding mount in the world today. The Peruvian Horse has had a following in Canada for over 40 years. Today, we have approximately 1500 Peruvian horses in Canada; most of these are pure bred, registered and owned by the 100+ members of the PHAC. Our show this weekend will last 3 days, Aug 30, 31 and Sept 1. If you cannot be with us all weekend, make sure you come back on Sunday to see the championship classes, where you will see only the best of the best of the Peruvian horse in Canada. Thank you and enjoy the Show Ben Sawatzky President PHAC

Good Luck to All Exhibitors

August, 2014 Summer is slipping along…far too quickly for my liking! Horse life is so much more interesting this time of year! The Summer Sizzler in June at the Burlington Iron Horse Equestrian Centre was an excellent event! Our internationally renowned Judge – Nick Breaux, was outstanding in his ability to make the weekend fun and valuable for everyone who attended. President, Luis video-taped a portion of the final day which included an impromptu “clinic”, so our membership may have the pleasure of viewing that at a future get-together. Our Peruvians “made their mark” as usual with their unique style and gait. The classes were varied and kept the spectators interested in what we might do next. Our show was shared with Arabians, Morgans and Saddlebred breeds. Luis had printed programs which included the names of our many sponsors who helped defray the costs of our show. Details were provided to help spectators understand how our shows are judged. The Peruvian classes were spaced throughout the weekend allowing the competitors and attendees time to pamper their horses and catch up with each other on the lawn beside our stalls. A Rundown on some of the classes: Zootecnico Class, which is really a “beauty contest” for the horses was won by Norman Henderson’‛s 2 year old HSDO Renegado. Novice Equitation – first place went to Angie Nadon of Anfarra Morgans Farm riding her 15 year old palomino mare, RSV Cleopatra. Junior Equitation was won by 10 year old Farrah Nadon riding her 18 year old grey mare, WF Flor Pequena. Pleasure Mares class was won by Angie Nadon and RSV Cleopatra Pleasure Geldings class was won by Valerie Henderson of Beaconhurst Stables riding her 4 year old BHS Centenario Championship Pleasure first prize was taken by Valerie Henderson and BHS Centenario Best Gaited Horse in Show and the Champagne Class were won by Sue Gambling riding her 6 year old mare, MVF Antorcha Blanca. 3rd Annual Wine Ride set for Sept. 13 in beautiful Prince Edward County.

INTRODUCING OUR 2014 PHAC JUDGE: THE HONORABLE CHRIS AUSTIN

I am honored to introduce myself to my fellow Peruvian Horse owners, breeders and spectators who enjoy these magnificent horses. I have been involved with Peruvian Horses as an owner and breeder since 1994. Since then we have bred many quality horses as well as have had the honor of winning many championships both regionally and nationally. Throughout the years the horses have always been a family affair. It started with my mom, sister, and dad (even though he is allergic to horses) and has since morphed into including my wife, Aura, my brother-in-law and now my own daughters, Kaia and Chiara. Early in 2009 I started the process of becoming a carded judge. During my student judging experiences, I had the opportunity to work with knowledgeable, experienced and well respected judges. Since being carded in 2010, I have judged many shows through the United States and Canada including the 2013 U.S. National show. I became a judge first for the opportunity to work with and be mentored by some of the most respected judges in the breed and grow my knowledge of the Peruvian horse. Secondly, I was looking for an avenue to give back to the breed of horse that has brought me so much joy. Finally, it is my hope to facilitate an honest and fun show for all exhibitors from the small one horse farm to the large breeder and help grow the number of horses and exhibitors at the shows. Outside of horses I am a Certified Public Accountant and work as a tax manager at one of the largest privately owned companies in the United States. I believe my integrity has given me the opportunities for advancement that I have obtained in my career. I hope you are here to not only present your horses at their best but also to enjoy the environment that only a Peruvian Horse Show can bring. I will evaluate each exhibitor’s horse fully and fairly regardless of who is riding the horse. The classes will be efficient and organized. Thank you for the opportunity to judge your horses. I hold myself to high integrity and standards so you may have the most enjoyable experience possible.

PERCENTAGES & JUDGING CRITERIA FOR BASIS OF JUDGE’S DECISIONS: “The percentages for judging which follow are set down with the intention of advertising exhibitors of the qualities being evaluated by the Judge as well as the relative importance attached to each quality. All percentages, rules and procedures which are to be considered as guidelines and are not to provide any sort of technicality which might force a judge to award a prize on any basis other than merit.” (Percentages Rule VII Section 8)

PHAC Class Procedures and Call of the Classes Purpose: To standardize the ring procedure and ensure that classes are run in a predictable manner, with all required elements presented to the judge prior to class cuts, yet maintain an efficient flow to keep shows within their schedules.

Procedure for Halter Classes : Each horse shall enter the ring in his best gait and shall remain in that gait until the Judge requests that the horse stop and line up. Each horse will be worked sufficiently as directed by the Judge in order to properly evaluate the gait. Horses will be worked in both directions of the ring and when requested to reverse, it is preferred that the handler change position to the inside. Position of the handler should be approximately even with the horse's withers and on the left hand side. Handlers may change sides during the individual workouts. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for a workout must be shown as requested by the Judge. Actions that may disturb other entries (such as lunging circles when asked to line up, or stopping intentionally) shall be forbidden.

Procedure for Breeding Classes : Class Procedure: All horses will enter the arena at their best gait and will remain working until asked to line up by the ring steward. Horses will be shown in each horse's best gait both directions of the ring and otherwise as requested by the Judge. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for a workout must be shown as requested by the Judge. The speed at which the horses are shown will be at the discretion of and completely under control of the Judge. The Judge may request different speeds of an individual horse or group to test the horse's thread, but excessive speed will not be required. Horses must be ridden throughout the entire class by only one and the same person unless the Judge, himself, wishes to ride one of the entries.

Procedure for Gait Classes: Class Procedure: Horses shall enter at the best gait and remain working on the rail. Horses will work both directions of the arena at best gait and will be asked to walk. Judge may wish to see horses slower or may ask them to extend their gait, work side by side, or may call the horses to line up and proceed with individual workouts. Smooth transitions are desirable as is a range of correct gait, however excessive speed is not required. Occasionally the Judge may wish to see the width of the thread (variation of speed in which a horse maintains a pure gait) of a particular horse. However, the horse which can move the fastest is not necessarily the better gaited horse. If another horse has a finer gait or if another horse has better movement, this may count for more in the final judging. Horses must be ridden throughout the entire class by only one and the same person unless the Judge, himself, wishes to ride one of the entries.

Procedure for Pleasure Division: All horses shall enter the ring at their best gait and continue on the rail. To be shown at the horse's best gait and at a walk in both directions of the ring and otherwise as requested by the Judge. The ideal Peruvian Pleasure Horse will be one that would be a smooth, efficient mount to take the rider on long rides. He should work effortlessly with a noticeable “bow in the rein indicating very light rein cues. Leg aids will be subtle and responses will be appropriate to a horse that is a pleasure to ride. The following maneuvers on the rail in both directions shall be mandatory in Pleasure Classes prior to line up and prior to a class cut being made. 1. Do complete small circles 2. Stop and stand quietly 3. Back up a minimum of five steps 4. Walk on loose rein 5. Reversal of directions on the rail (done to the inside) Pleasure Optional maneuvers (on rail or individually) 6. Do serpentines through objects placed in an straight line 7. Do figure 8’s Diameter for the circles and spacing for the serpentines will be approximately 3 to 4 metres (10 to 15 feet) using safe and stable obstacles set in an approximately straight line. All maneuvers should be performed with precision. The horse should remain relaxed, and nervousness will be penalized. Mandatory maneuvers must be performed in both directions. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for workouts must be shown as requested by the Judge.

Performance Division: All horses shall enter the ring at their best gait and continue on the rail. The following maneuvers shall be mandatory in Performance Classes in order to demonstrate tractability and good manners. An ideal Performance Horse will perform with energy and precision. A more energetic attitude than in a Pleasure class is acceptable but the horse will be awaiting cues from his rider. A horse taking his own initiative or showing rebellion or resistance to the rider’s commands should not place over a horse working quietly and correctly. Mandatory on rail prior to any class cut: 1. Walk on loose rein 2. Stop and stand quietly 3. Back a minimum of five steps 4. Do complete small circles (to inside unless requested by judge toward rail) 5. Do reversals of directions on the rail (done to inside unless requested by judge toward rail) 6. Do serpentines through objects that are offset or curved configuration 7. Figure 8’s 8. Side pass 9. Stop, turn on the haunches 180 degrees Performance Optional maneuvers (on rail or individually) 9. Spirals (caracol) 10. Back 10 – 15 steps 11. Turn on the forehand Diameter for the circles and spacing for the serpentines will be approximately 3 to 4 metres (10 to 15 feet) using safe and stable obstacles offset approx. 2 – 3 ft. Mandatory maneuvers must be performed in both directions. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for workouts must be shown as requested by the Judge

THE PERUVIAN PASO HORSE The modern day Peruvian Horse descends from two different breeds of war pony introduced into Peru by the Conquistadors, specifically the Spanish Jennett and Andalusian. The Jennett passed on its even temperament, ambling gait and smooth ride. From the Andalusian came the classic carriage, animation of action, spirit and much of the conformation. The mixing of these bloods plus climate and forage served to modify future generations and to create this unique breed which possessed characteristic different from those of any other horse in the world. The Peruvian Paso is officially recognized as the National Horse of Peru and is commemorated in poetry and story, in statues and postage stamps.

Born to Gait In some of their gaits, many other kinds of horses in lateral propulsion follow the same pattern of footfall sequence as the Peruvian Paso, including the American Saddle bred and Tennessee walker, but there the similarity ends. There are two fundamental and marked differences. First is the execution of the gait or the way of doing it. From the hundreds of years of selective breeding for gait, the Peruvian Paso has had a conformation and other contributing attributes no other horse can claim. His relatively heavy forehand, extra-large girth, sloping shoulders, short back and strong, supple loin, low croup and dock, slightly sickle hocks and springy pasterns combine with a distinctive rolling motion of the front legs and feet and almost no hock action behind, to absorb the jolts and jars of riding. The other and greatest difference is the Paso gait is entirely natural and requires no long toes, special weights, boots, chains or special training. Also, unlike some other breeds, the Peruvian Paso does not nod or bob his head, an action which always has a corresponding compensating bob of the croup, transferred directly to the rider's seat. The trajectory of the front legs is unique among the breeds of the world. The Peruvian Paso horse has a swinging motion of the front legs which is likened to paddling. The shoulder, knee and fetlock are flexed snappily during each step the horse takes, and the foot is rotated outwards so the front hoof follows an arc instead of a straight line when the horse moves forward. This action called "termino" is a remarkably beautiful action.

Versatility The Peruvian Paso is inherently intelligent and quick to learn and seems to enjoy being cooperative and amenable. In Peru, they have been used for fighting bulls from horseback. Therefore they must have endurance, speed, agility and calmness plus courage. The average height of the Paso is 13.5 to 15 hands and more, and the weight is from 900 to 1000 pounds (about the same as Morgan horses and Arabian horses). These beautiful horses come in all solid colors plus various roan colors also. The Peruvian is usually ridden and shown in the traditional Peruvian tack, but he can be ridden in Western, English, Saddle Seat and Plantation.

PHCBC In memory of Joe MacRae Sannichton, BC

In January 2014, the Peruvian Horse world lost a true aficionado, and dear friend, to our small horse community. Joe MacRae was one of those special people that had a zest for life, and it showed in his true passion for the Peruvian Paso Horse. He touched many of our hearts with his kindness and thoughtful gestures, and was a true promoter of our breed. In honour of Joe, this painting has been commissioned by local artist Shannon Ford, and will be presented annually to the "Best Gaited Horse of Show" at the Canadian National Peruvian Horse Show. The winner will keep the painting for the year after their win, and then return it for the following National show. Special thanks to those who kindly donated to this amazing work of art.

horses and were invited for a “short ride” the next day. That short ride was 3 hours long up and down hills, along trails, and we were hooked. Guess what? I was not sore.

The Novice by Joyce Brown How did I wind up being so passionate about these Peruvian horses anyway? At one time I did not know they existed. I’ll try to write my story. In 1986, nearing retirement, my husband Frank and I bought an acreage, and with it we inherited a little filly which we raised and had trained. Oh, boy - was she rough to ride. We added a nice gelding and began to explore the trails around our acreage, but only short rides as those horses were not easy to ride. We had been on several week-long outfitter rides in Jasper Park and we knew we loved horses.. What to do? I began to wonder about this riding stuff, as I wound up mighty sore from it. Then, fate took a hand in things. I saw an article in a western horse magazine about Paso Finos, and how smooth they were to ride. I was intrigued. Buried in the article was a very small ad about Peruvian horses, and it said “come and ride one at the show”. That show was in Armstrong, where my parents had retired to, so that is what I did. Short ride, but awesome. Nice friendly people at the show. We found out about an Open House that fall, so we went. We saw the

We bought 2 Peruvians and took them home in the spring after they were started. Frank and his horse did not get along very well. Bailador did not ever buck or threaten; however Frank was a true horseman and patiently worked with that horse till he was a superb and faithful companion. In the meantime, I spotted a nice little gelding at Cadillac Ranch and traded my mare for him. His name was Don Alfredo but he soon became known as Freddy. It was a long time until he would be trained, so I bought Oro Helado. We had miles and miles or trails to explore, smoothly and easily. What joy! Then, Frank decided he was going to ride through the take-out window at McDonalds and smoothly ride away with his coffee. He did, and his picture is on the PHAC brochure. Frank and his awesome buckskin Peruvian became quite famous around town and often rode to a local gas station or McDonalds, or Tim Hortons for coffee. (By-law officers ignored that!) In 1995 I thought it would be nice to show Frank’s horse but he said no way. Then my former trainer called. She had a show horse perfect for me to buy, which I did. He worked perfectly and there I was with Don Curioso. What a horse! Absolutely awesome. I entered him in the National Show in Armstrong and his former owner rode him to Champion of Champions. I treasure that ribbon! I knew nothing about riding in a show but entered in the Champagne Class and got 2nd(17 horses

entered). Don was so smooth. What a Peruvian!

Much to my heartfelt sorrow Freddy passed away on Oct.17, 2013.

I discovered that Don understood what Louise was saying and he taught me what to do. I had to learn how to bathe him, tack up, and clean up after him. What a learning curve, I rode Don countless miles and won buckets of ribbons. I was no longer a Novice. Sadly, after being shown until age 20, Don passed away at age 22. I was devastated. Need to ride Freddy I guess.

I have seen the most beautiful creatures God has ever created, and in addition to super friends and family, I have been left with wonderful memories of people I have met, the horses I have ridden and the places I have been. The passion I have for these wonderful creatures will never fade. Treasure your horses everyone. They will always be the best. I will see you at shows, probably as a volunteer.

During those years I made 13 trips to Peru and their National show, saw thousands of Peruvians, got interested in the history of the Incas, rode some wonderful Peruvians on the beach and in the Andes. These trips were wonderful; almost a must for Peruvian horse owners.

I wrote this tribute to Don Curioso after he passed away, and would like to add Don Alfredo to it.

Sadly, Frank passed away in 2007, a couple of years after his buddy Bailador, and I wound up with an acreage and horses to look after. I sold Oro and decided to show Freddy. I didn’t know how that would turn out but it was OK. I found out that I could not look after everything any more, so I sold the acreage and boarded out Freddy. Trails were crappy there so in 2011 I moved Freddy to Armstrong, rode trails, and entered some shows. In the meantime, PHAC, in their infinite wisdom changed the Novice rules, so after 20 years of showing and many first place ribbons, I was a Novice again. Go figure. In 2013 at the Wild West Show, Freddy captured 14 ribbons and then was chosen Reserve Champion Pleasure Gelding. We won more ribbons at the Nationals, a fitting end to Freddy’s career.,

A TRIBUTE TO DON CURIOSO MAY 1, 1983 - OCTOBER 3, 2005 1995 NATIONAL CHAMPION OF CHAMPION PLEASUE GELDING AND TO LRCR DON ALFREDO JUNE 24, 1995 - OCT. 17, 2013 2004 AND 2013 RESERVE CHAMPION PLEASURE GELDING

My Peruvian Horse Here he comes, here he comes, Like the beat of drums. When his hooves hit the streets I can hear those four beats. With mane and tail flowing What a smooth way of going! When I bought this horse I did not know my fate Now trail riding’d fun and showing is just great! What a wonderful ride, it just never fails, Going up hills and down all the trails. Together we’ll ride, off into the West I Know my Peruvian horse is the best!

I’ve made many changes, taken numerous strides outside of my box and feel I am a better person for doing so. Your workshop opened my eyes and presented me with an outlook that has improved my life. My relationships with those important to me have changed and have so much more meaning and love.– you and your team will do well in mentoring others to reach for the sky and make the best of life. - CO My session with Jocelyn was magical. I thought I was going to talk about something completely different when I sat down with her. Through her honest, insightful questions we were quickly on a topic much different and important that was hidden under my surface chatter. Her quiet strength made me trust her and the horse she partnered with making me feel safe and supported the whole time. It is hard to describe how you just know that no matter what you are not being judged and you will not be let down. That kind of support isn’t always so easily found in life.
