Dressage for Gaited Horses Clinic Sponsored by the Peruvian Horse Club of BC By Laurie Hardingham The Clinic, organized by Cathy Taggart, was held at the ranch of Judy and Ivan Bourrelle, an ideal setting, the weekend of May 2 and 3, 2015. A sunny sky greeted the seven riders who met with the 3 clinicians and were divided into 3 groups. A number of people attended as auditors. The clinicians, Illona Berbekar, Jose Vasquez and Kelly MacIntosh began with a discussion with the riders about their plans for the day, briefly reviewed the elements of dressage and then asked what the individual riders wished to work on. Then the group sessions began, and with small numbers the teaching and learning was individual and intense. Jose worked on the finer points of Peruvian equitation, and tailored his work on the needs of each rider and horse. Emphasis was placed on getting the horse into gait and staying in a consistent gait at the horse’s best speed. As Jose noted, “Each horse is different”. Kelly’s speciality is dressage, and after a brief review of what dressage is and the different levels, we worked with her on cues, especially leg cues, and riding straight lines around the rails and on the diagonal as well as bending and turns. Ilona worked with us on circles, and flexing our horses, square corners versus round corners, and many other things that helped the horses be quiet and pay attention so the horse and rider can work together as a team. Lunch and dinner was excellently prepared and served at the Park by Larry and Lorraine Watson. The fire was going and we sat around the campfire on Saturday evening warding off the evening chill, visiting and catching up with everyone. Sunday dawned sunny and cloudless, with a light frost in the morning. The coffee was hot and ready, and the fire was burning. After a breakfast of scrambled ostrich eggs (2 eggs provided by Rob Sjodin fed everyone very adequately), french toast and sausages, we were ready to tack up and ride for another day.

Building on Saturday’s work, we refined our skills and learned new ones. The purpose of the clinic was to provide participants with a basic understanding of dressage and provide them with a chance to practice dressage movements and work on their balance and riding position. After a lunch of Beef dip and salads (with lots of desserts) the participants reviewed the dressage pattern and watched as Ilona demonstrated on her Paso Fino, Festival. Then each rider rode the dressage test to show that the horse can be ridden on a light but steady contact and be allowed freedom to lower and stretch his head and neck at the free walk. Cathy Taggart called the movements/ gaits required, and Kelly MacIntosh was the judge. All participants received a Peruvian Paso mug and written feedback from the judge. First and second place went to John MacMillan riding Polete and Laurie Hardingham riding Rey Gitano. It was evident from the smooth riding, transitions, turns, quietness of the horses and gait that all riders had improved their skills over the weekend. Then there was an opportunity for more one on one time with the clinicians. After an early supper of delicious leftovers, and some more reminiscing about horses and good times, we all went home tired and happy, acknowledging that it was time well spent. A HEARTFELT THANK YOU to the organizers, cooks, clinicians and volunteers who helped make this event possible!

“At the Clinic last year I really learned a lot about my horse, and came out of it with a basic understanding of dressage. I used what I learned over the summer, and this year it all came together so that riding the test was not as overwhelming as it was the first time.” Laurie Hardingham

“I wondered what I would learn in a clinic this year and was amazed at the number of fine points that Jose taught me. Jose said that you need these fine points if you are going to ride in the champion of champions classes. As well as learning, the food and socializing was excellent again!” John McMillan

WHO BUYS PERUVIAN HORSES? by Verne R. Albright What sort of person buys a Peruvian Paso? This unusual breed attracts people who march to their own music. However Peruvian owners are in step when it comes to their values. Many of them, such as Tammy Rimes, dreamed of horses when they were young and, like Tammy, waited a long time to finally indulge their fantasies. “My dad was a cattle rancher, and I always thought I’d raise horses,” Tammy says. “The way things worked out, I rode less than a dozen times in the first fifteen years after I left home.” As time passes, people become less willing to overlook the fact that horseback riding can be strenuous and painful. “On a trail ride, I rode my first ‘gaited’ horse,” Tammy remembers. “It was so comfortable that I decided to look a little closer at the gaited breeds. My search led me to the Peruvian Paso. They were the smoothest of all, but what sold me was the spirit – or brio, as it’s called – combined with a sweet temperament.” Tammy knew that a lifetime with Peruvian Pasos would mean a lifetime with Peruvian Paso owners, so she decided to take in a Peruvian show. “I found that not only were the horses everything I’d hoped for, but the people are very helpful and eager to share information, something I hadn’t experienced in other competitive show atmospheres.” A Texas cowboy named Glenn Cochran also saw Peruvians as a connection with the past, a past he thought had died. “Just before I got into horses,” Glenn remembers, “most working horses around here had a blend of cowhorse, or Quarter Horse, and gaited saddle horse blood. These smooth-gaited ”single-footers” were highly valued. As late as the 70’s, a few of these crossbred – but registered – Quarter Horses could still be found. Occasionally they could be taught a running walk or a single-foot. For decades I tried to teach every horse I rode, with almost no success.” One day, Glenn’s wife, Sallie, came home full of enthusiasm after riding her first Peruvian Horse. Sallie succeeded in overcoming Glenn’s doubts and got him to try Peruvians while working their cattle. Glenn was astounded at how good they were. “The Peruvians have good cow sense,” Glenn reports. They’ll never replace Quarter Horses, but in some ways they’re better: comfort, for example.” Dave Leewaye agrees that Peruvians will never put Quarter Horses out of work. Nonetheless, he and his fifteen-year-old Peruvian Paso compete successfully in team penning. Five years ago, neither Dave nor his horse had worked a single cow. Since then, they’ve climbed up to the top third of their classification in the year-end, county-wide standings That isn’t bad considering that Dave is a retired teacher – not a cowboy. Colleen Cates uses Peruvians to follow her dogs during field trials. “Most of our friends thought they wouldn’t be able to keep up,” she recalls. “I’m happy to say that not only do my Peruvians keep up, but I have to hold them back! They perform beautifully. The field conditions don’t faze them at all, and what style they have! They’ve gained everyone’s respect.” Others buy Peruvians to extend their riding days. Among these are people like Jeannie Sullivan, who have painful diseases or injuries and were told by doctors that their riding days were over. Jeannie changed to another doctor and bought a Peruvian Paso. “You can believe it or not,” she insists with fierce conviction, “but now my back feels much better on days when I ride, not to mention my new outlook on life.” The smooth ride of the Peruvian horse was a revelation to Rose Walker even though she’s ridden gaited horses most of her life. At 79 years of age, she rides nothing but Peruvians, often on all-day outings. When people tell her how remarkable she is, Mrs. Walker is embarrassed. After all, her 100-yearold mother often comes along on her own Peruvian. There are many who buy Peruvians for their grace, style and beauty. For them, these horses are living art or – as a Canadian once described them – “the tablet on which the Peruvians have chiseled their culture.”

Dianne Bickford was intrigued by the beauty and mystique of Peruvians and now breeds them for the show arena. However, she has never forgotten that they are horses, and she doesn’t baby them. She has ridden her Champion of Champions stallion in the wilds of Colorado and Montana and once deep into Yellowstone Park. “We were way back in Yellowstone,” she remembers, “where we could hear elk bugling. You don’t usually see stallions in places like that. People are always astounded that mine behaves so well. Absolutely nothing fazes him.” Diane also has a very successful show mare that she loaned to another rider for an NATRC ride. “She did great for her first time out,” Dianne reports, “and finished a very difficult ride when some veteran horses didn’t.” Others see Peruvians only as athletes. Peruvians compete successfully in a number of tough sports, and they take the bruising part out of these activities. Furthermore, these smooth-riding, levelheaded horses are noted for an uncanny ability to make inexperienced people look good. Canadians Marian Taylor and Joyce Wallbridge were so green that they finished dead last on their first competitive trail ride. Determined not to let that happen again, Marion won the Lightweight and Joyce the Heavyweight Division in both of their next two rides. Following that, the two ladies reported a lot of phone calls from competitive trail riders interested in Peruvians. In their first endurance race, a fifty-miler, Joan Box and Tempie Butler were so obviously inexperienced that the ride manager approached them just before the start. Concerned, he asked them to hold their horses to one side and let the other 40 riders go ahead. As the race went along, Tempie caught and passed all but five of those riders, and Joan caught her th share, too, finishing 12th. Not only that, but Tempie’s horse was judged the 4 best-conditioned horse of all that started the ride. After that one competitor good-naturedly groused: “I think the Peruvians and their riders should have to go back out and ride at least another hour. It’s only fair. The horses aren’t tired, and neither are the riders!” “The amazing thing was the competitive spirit of the Peruvians,” Joan recalls. “They knew it was a contest, and they wanted to win!” Renee Been moved her Peruvian ahead of a grateful lady whose horse was panicked by passing semis where an NATRC trail briefly followed a highway shoulder. Renee’s calmer horse steadied the other until the trail veered away from the highway. “You’re lucky to have such a seasoned horse,” the lady said afterwards, with a sigh of relief. “I didn’t bother to tell her that my horse had been under saddle for all of seven months and that this was only her second NATRC ride,” Renee recalls. “If she’d never been around Peruvians, she wouldn’t have believed it anyhow!” After the ride, it was announced that Renee’s mare had won second place. In BC, Dolores Scott was having trouble keeping her Peruvian gelding in shape, so she loaned him to a friend. That friend conditioned the horse and then competed in the horse’s first Competitive Trail Ride, finishing the full 25 miles. The gelding named Su Jacinto, was 24 at the time! Canadian competitive trail enthusiasts Cyndi and Brent Rowat, of Alberta, took their Peruvian gelding Poncho Negro on many 25 mile rides, with numerous finishes in the top 10. Then, when Poncho was 17, he completed his first 50 mile endurance ride, and finished with flying colors. Poncho competed for two more years and won the High Point Trail Horse a total of five times. Peruvian horses mean many different things to many different people. But there are few who would disagree that this is a natural breed, unspoiled by too much tampering by man. That’s the way they want to keep it. That tells us something about North American values, something very different from what we hear on the news. “Road to the Horse” What does this Kentucky Quarter Horse show have to do with Peruvians???
 ............EVERYTHING!
On the last weekend of March, my husband, Keith and I journeyed 10 hours by car to the rolling hills of Lexington, KY. where, for 3 days, we were absorbed in a unique experience combining education and entertainment on the subject of horsemanship! In the Alltech Arena of the Kentucky Horse Farm, along with 6000 other horse loving members in an international audience, we were immersed in the 13th annual competition of 3 internationally known, elite clinicians and horse trainers. They worked with untouched 3 year old quarter horse colts from Four Sixes Ranch in Texas through the process of building a relationship between horse and human. The competitors were judged not only on their final test of skill in an obstacle course, but on the means to the end result. The goal of the “Road to the Horse” is to teach equestrians that natural horsemanship is a kinder, gentler more effective way of working with horses. The “Road to the Horse” competition was started in 2003 by Tootie Bland and her late husband, Steven and has been presented in Texas, Tennessee and Kentucky. This year, the defending champion of 2014, Jim Anderson, from Strathmore, Alberta competed against a three time winner of the Road to the Horse Championship, Chris Cox, from Mineral Wells, Texas and the Wild Card Winner, Trevor Carter, from Clovis, New Mexico to win the coveted title of “ Road to the Horse World Champion” and a cheque for $100,000! After the 3 competitors chose 2 colts each from a collection of 12 fine specimens out of Four Sixes Ranch, 3 round pens were set up and the clinicians started their work building a relationship with each horse. They worked their individual

techniques in bonding with their animals. They were given an hour and 45 minutes on Friday and Saturday with each of their two horses. They all wore microphones, so they were able to relate to us some of the things they were doing to train their horses. They all emphasized that they try to “make the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult”! Gradually they were able to apply a saddle and carefully mount their animals – remember – this is all within 105 minutes on two days with a mandatory 10 minute break during each half hour! On the third day, the clinicians had 45 minutes for each of their two horses to warm up then attempt a very interesting obstacle course with poles, jumps, ropes, tarp on the ground etc. The horses had to walk a serpentine through poles, open a gate, have a rope swung over their heads, pull a log, walk over a teeter totter board, push a barrel with their nose and one final “surprise” obstacle where the rider pulled a rope out of a wishing well and a big furry spider popped out on the end! By the time we got to this stage, the crowd, which had been silent, erupted into cheers and applause after each accomplishment. At the end of the course, the competitors had an opportunity to try a feat of their own design for bonus points. Trevor and Jim did not get to this level of the final competition but when Chris Cox reached the end of the obstacles, he stopped; settled for a few seconds then very carefully hoisted himself out of the saddle, rubbed the back of his horse with his foot then, if you could believe it – he stood up in the saddle and swung a rope! The crowd went wild! This is a “signature” move for Chris and he was able to accomplish this after just 2 sessions in the round pen with an unbroke horse! Chris threw his hat into the crowd and we knew he had clinched the title! In the presentations at the end of the show, all three competitors were on stage along with Chris’ family – his wife, Barbara; his 6 year old daughter, Charley; and 3 year old son, Case. After receiving his cheque, plus a beautiful custom trophy

saddle from Martin Saddlery and a belt buckle custom designed by Gary Gist, Chris said that he had great respect for his two competitors and he announced that he was giving $10,000 each to Jim Anderson and Trevor Carter. (Later, Jim reported that he was “paying it forward” in donating his share to the Canadian Ronald

McDonald House and the Canadian Kids Make a Wish Foundation.) Talk about “warm and fuzzies”! There was not a dry eye in the crowd! As only the Americans can do, the show was also filled with all kinds of entertainment. The event started with mounted cowgirls galloping at top speed around the arena with flags and the poles erupting into a fireworks display. A tribute to the military veterans, followed by the National Anthem – “The Star Spangled Banner” performed by singer/songwriter, Stephanie Quayle had even the Canadians in the audience spellbound in patriotism!

The Notorious One Arm Bandit, 62 year old John Payne, who is the 12 time winner of the prestigious Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) title of Rodeo Act of the Year, entertained us with his incredible stunts on horseback. His Dodge pick-up truck pulling a trailer outfitted with a platform on top and a ramp between the truck and trailer was brought into the arena. The One Armed Bandit (who lost his right arm in a construction accident that almost killed him at 20 years of age in 1973) then proceeded to herd 2 huge bison onto the back of the truck, up the ramp and onto the top of the trailer. Not only that, but he then rode his mule up the ramp and joined the bison on the platform! If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have believed it could be done!

I had never seen the Mounted Shooters of America in action but I was spellbound as a dozen shooters rode their horses in a timed program, shooting 10 balloon targets mounted on posts. At top speed, shooting single action .45 caliber firearms in the style of the late 1800’s, the riders shot the first 5 balloons in a random pattern. They then holstered their first revolver, turned around a barrel, grabbed another revolver and ran down a straight line to shoot the final 5 balloons, highlighting the speed of the horse and the rider’s shooting ability. The ammunition used in the exercise is black powder and the rounds are blanks with no projectile other than hot embers that travel 10 to 15 feet, making it safe for horse, rider and audience. Speed and accuracy are the name of this game and it certainly got my adrenaline pumping! On the Sunday of the show, we attended Cowboy Church at the arena - another new experience, I found the style to be somewhat out of my comfort zone but thoroughly inspirational. It was Palm Sunday and the speaker took the scripture from Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey. He likened it to the “first rodeo” when he described how this unbroken donkey would be faced with a huge cheering crowd and a man dressed in white robes set upon his back! I got it! I must say the fundamental style of worship can be more dramatic than my conservative mainline blood is used to, but it just seemed to fit in the atmosphere of that Kentucky platform. It would not be like me to omit saying a word about the shopping experience at “Road to the Horse”! Can you imagine equestrian-themed equipment, tack, art, jewellery, clothing, travel, trailers, camping gear, gifts, DVD’s, boots and literature all under one roof and three days to shop between presentations in the arena??? I didn’t know where to start! I had already checked on the limits for importation upon our return across the border to Canada and coupled with Keith’s allowance, I knew I could go a little bit crazy! Needless to say, LoKey Ranch now has a few new items to hang on the wall, to wear and to add to our tack room. Keith discovered that all of the Four Sixes horses that were part of the clinics at the show were for sale at $6000 each. He started to say he wished he had brought our trailer,

but I had only to remind him that – “they are NOT gaited and they are certainly NOT Peruvians” and he returned to reality! Whew! A real bonus for Keith and me was having a chance to converse with friends at the show and to dine with two knowlegeable wine and food connoisseurs (Jack and Helmut) accompanied with great conversation and laughter. We drank in the beauty that is Kentucky …the fences, the rolling hills, the barns, the fields of beautiful horses, the bourbon and the inimitable American hospitality - all part of the experience. We appreciated the classy, refined demeanour of the clinicians at every stage of the competition. We were proud of the Canadian presence at the show and the worthy demonstrations of our Jim Anderson. It will go down as one of our highlights of 2015. Returning home to LoKey Ranch and seeing our beautiful Peruvians, Montana and Evidente waiting for us at the paddock fence reminded us how blessed we are in our life with horses! We are full of new ideas from the show to try with our animals. We will work on “making the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult”! Rest assured, I will stop short of standing in the saddle! I don’t think my Montana would like that!

We are immensely happy and honored..

.........that due to our intense work and dedication promoting the Peruvian culture, as well as, one of Peru’s national treasures - the Peruvian Paso Horse – in Ontario, Canada, we have been selected by the Federal Government, the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto, corporate sponsors and the PanAmerican Games organizers to be part of the “Everyday Ambassadors Series” which will be shown repeatedly during the PanAmerican Games in Toronto from July 10th to the 26th, 2015. We truly consider this to be a golden opportunity to show, not hundreds but thousand of people, who will be coming to the PanAmerican Games in Toronto, the beauty and elegance of the Peruvian Paso horse. As the breed is nearly disappearing in Ontario, our participation in the “Everyday Ambassadors Series” will no doubt help spark, renew and revive prospective owners and new members of the PHAC’s interest in the Peruvian Paso horse. We are sincerely proud that due to our knowledge and dedication for the Peruvian Paso Horse we are able to continue expressing our undying love and gratitude for such a fantastic breed! Long live the Peruvian Paso Horse! Carlos & Carla Escudero contact: pasohorse@rogers.com

This high energy bay mare was Canada's High Point Bozal Horse in 2011 before taking time off to be a mom. She has had 2 promising babies for Ringstead. She carries herself with elegance and she has a beautiful smooth gait with lift and termino. Gabriela would need an experienced rider.

RSTD Lindeza

$6,000

2009 Bay Mare (RSTD Volador x RSTD Fabula) Now in the bit, this dark bay filly has potential to shine in Pleasure/Performance or on the trail. She has a super smooth gait with good timing and did well at her first show last season. Lindeza is about to become a first time mom this spring, so she would not be available until after weaning time.

$5,000

2009 Chestnut Gelding (RDLF Don Alberto x RSTD Veranera)

Viajero would make someone a great companion. When it comes to grooming, tacking, bathing, feet, etc., he's a rock star! He has great potential in the show ring as a Performance or Pleasure Gelding and is super smooth!!

RSTD Exceptional

RSTD Gabriela

2007 Bay Mare (Espejo De Peru x RSTD Fabula)

RSTD Abril

$2,500

2011 Chestnut Mare (Espejo De Peru x Encima) This filly is super friendly, always the first one to come and greet you. She loves attention and is easy to catch. She made the transition from bozal into bit easily and responds to leg commands like a pro. She is cautious with new things but just needs a second look before moving past it.

$6,000

2011 Chestnut Gelding (*ERM Espontaneo x JRU Sabrina) This son of ERM Espontaneo and full brother to Canadian National Breeding Stallion RSTD Gustavio, is a gem. He has an "exceptional" personality, is very willing and easy going and is going to make a wonderful performance/ and rail gelding that anyone can ride.
