a full year scholarship for a young girl in Haiti to get an education. Kristina and I have found a new passion through Trades of Hope. We’re selling gorgeous, handmade pieces such as earrings, baskets, wallets, and purses that rival the quality and design of high-end designer brands, at a fraction of the cost. Arguably more importantly, we’re also educating consumers about the benefits and importance of Fair Trade and Slow Fashion. According to Fair Trade USA, “Fair Trade is a global movement, made up of a diverse network of producers, companies, shoppers, advocates, and organizations putting people and planet 258

first.” Trades of Hope was founded with this movement at its heart. As a company, Trades of Hope puts people first, working always to create sustainable business opportunities both for our artisans and our partners. Kristina and I have been working diligently to spread awareness of the Fair Trade movement. In August we hosted a children’s storytime at the local public library, teaching children how they can change the world by purchasing (or reminding their parents to) Fair Trade. We plan to continue our outreach into the community by working with local retailers, helping them to learn more

about Fair Trade and how they can help improve our local ethical buying options. As Anna Lappé stated, “Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” It is our hope that we can empower more consumers to think Fair Trade and to purchase with a purpose.
