Come To BOXCAR Walking into Boxcar restaurant gave me a wonderful, casual, wide-open feeling. Settled in a growing restaurant area, at 127 Railroad Street, Suite 120, Rochester, New York, and is very easy to find. Being close to the Public Market, has been a total plus. There is convenient parking in the street and right across the street. While reservations are not necessary at this point, calling ahead to reserve a time for private parties is advised. Looking around, it is hard to imagine that it once had a dirt floor, used as a growing room for a local high-quality mushroom growing business, some time ago! They like to think of their restaurant as a clean, modern, upscale, chicken shack. The Boxcar involves themselves in special events and has these listed on their website. A popular thing they offer during these open to public events is their donut wall, in which fresh baked donuts are hung up to just help yourself to! I must admit as I sat there, I thought of all kinds of possibilities. Want to get your friends or work team together for a great cup of coffee and a fresh made donut, or breakfast item, for a friendly conversation, or meeting? Bring them to Boxcar! time and reason to come and enjoy great foods and beverages. You can come in and eat a full meal, or snack, have a beverage at the bar, or get a “grab and go”. Boxcar is a Southern inspired restaurant featuring, fresh made donuts, buttermilk battered fried chicken, and craft cocktails. Owned by John Ebel, Marc LeBeau, and Michael Beinetti opened on May 20, 2017. Their business manager that recently joined them is Christopher Vanderviver, whom is also connected to Glen Edith Coffee Roasters. Glen Edith coffee is served at the Boxcar. They offer Drip, Espresso, Cortado, cappuccino, latte along with flavor, if you’d like, and cold brew. Boxcar’s mission statement is to provide stellar customer service, while serving quality comfort food that they feel everyone knows and loves. Boxcar knows they draw in customers that love fried foods, especially fried chicken and donuts. Also included on the menu are a few items for vegetarians. When I visited Boxcar recently I sat and spoke with the bar and general manager/ mixologist Alex Loughlin. She has created a wonderful cocktail menu. Recently joining the boxcar team, Alex whom is certainly practiced and well rounded with her bar management skills, had recently left another nearby restaurant after a successful ten years. She has a gift developing refined cocktail libations, which include the GTT menu, (Gin Tonic, Tea) offerings. One example is the Tommyrotter American, which is a blending of white tea, apple and rosemary, along with Tommyrotter Gin. I want to go back and try their brunch Mimosa, served on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am- 3:00 pm. Fresh squeezed

Boxcar knows they draw in customers that love fried foods, especially fried chicken and donuts. You can have your beverage, along with your food seated there. They also serve on average, thirteen draft beers, and hard cider osb. Other beverage offerings are: Bottled Water, Fiz Sodas, Sweet Tea, Red Jacket Juices. Seated with me also for a talk was Boxcar’s head kitchen chef Brennan Cody. Brennan has cooked in restaurants in not only Rochester, but also Phoenix, and LA. Brennan has been with Boxcar since it’s beginning set up, helping to develop the menu and kitchen. While speaking with Brennan, I got the feeling like he really took his position very personal and serious. From one chef to another, I can usually tell! I liked the way he explained to me how the Korean BBQ Cauliflower topped with toasted sesame seeds tossed in buffalo sauce, had such a wonderful crispiness! Honestly the crispiest tempura batter coating I have ever had. While many batters have beer or water in them, Boxcar uses Vodka in their batter. Vodka has a high alcohol content that cooks off and evaporates when frying, and allows for the batter to not draw moisture in during frying process. The Korean BBQ Cauliflower was one of the foods offered to me. It was

spicy, and was delicious, and a great item for those eating vegetarian. Fabulous crunch! Another plate tasted was the Trainhopper. It is the Boxcar’s take on a type of “garbage plate”. It was brought to me in a shallow bowl containing, Beer Mac and Cheese, House Cut Fries, Fried Chicken Breast, cut up, tossed in their own Buffalo Sauce, topped with Cabbage Slaw, topped with a Basil Ranch Dressing, all made from scratch. If you like plates, you will certainly go for this one. I loved the crunchy slaw on top, and the basil ranch dressing was great! I was presented with their Classic Chicken Sandwich: Fried Chicken on a Union Street Bakery, locally baked roll, Cabbage Slaw, and Basil Ranch Dressing. It rivals any battered fried chicken sandwich I have had. The chicken has a wonderful buttermilk batter and is crispy and very moist inside. Certainly filling, served basic on a plate, but if that is what you are looking to eat, you owe it to yourself to try the Boxcar’s! Working much earlier hours is Brennan’s sister Rae Cody Lesio, whom was just recently married! Rae makes the donuts and does a spectacular job. I was able to taste the signature

donut named the Boxcar, when I asked for a Bloody Mary. I figured the bloody Mary would be a great baseline to compare to other bloody Mary’s tasted in other establishments. The Boxcar signature donut is a Red Velvet donut, which laid across a spicy tomato based beverage cut in half, on a skewer, along with a buttermilk battered fried chicken finger sticking up out above the beverage, three green olives on a separate smaller skewer and a lime wedge. Quite the site! If you like your Bloody Mary’s spicy, this one is for you! I am sure you can ask the bar server to not make it as spicy, if you love Bloody Mary’s with less heat! It certainly looked impressive. I loved seeing that Red Velvet, deep red donut, with a chocolate glaze and sprinkles! The donut was extremely moist, fresh, and delicious! The donuts are offered in three different levels. There are basic offerings, lightly dusted, called coach level, ones topped, named executive, and ones filled like a Crème Brule, or Cannoli filled donut called first class level. In all, I would like to invite you to try out the Boxcar yourself. Go when wanting a casual place to sit, enjoy great beverages and wonderful, moist, yet crispy fried foods, tasty salads, and side dishes, and great fresh made donuts! As the New Year draws closer, many of us are pulling out our notebooks and tallying our resolutions, only to forget about them just weeks into January. What exactly do you want to change about yourself? If you’re like majority of Americans, it’s likely you’re gunning for weight loss. But was that on your list last year? For as long as I can remember, it’s been on mine. Even after a 50-pound weight loss only three years ago, an integral part of my womanhood seems to be wanting to lose weight whenever I’m able to set a resolution.

Later that afternoon friends, family and busy shoppers stopped to watch a very special little dancer and her new friends! Charlotte commented “we are so thrilled to have had this opportunity along with our dancers and Giana to raise awareness for Muddy’s Buddies, a charity that makes such a difference to young children’s lives.’ Over the past few weeks Gianna attended rehearsals at Roc Dance to practice with her fellow dancers to prepare for her dancing debut,

the girls all became fast friends, and it won’t end here! Alongside the performance, the dancers modelled their festive fundraising t-shirt, designed specifically for the occasion. Dear Julie, My husband is a pretty decent guy. He’s loyal, kind, has a great sense of humor and is a wonderful father to our three children. He says “it’s just throwing money away because we could have a mild winter,” as if he’s lived in Ecuador instead of Western New York his entire life. Then, he gets cranky when we have to call and pay the per trip rate. This typically results in spending a lot more than the season rate. It also forces me dig my own way out of the driveway several times a winter to get to work on time, and usually with a snow shovel that has a broken handle (I buy a new one at least once a year. Why do they ALWAYS have broken handles?) Can you help me find a way to get him to see reason, and to avoid frostbite this year? The New Year is upon us and it’s time to think about what we really want to focus on when that proverbial ball drops to initiate us into 2018. In a world full of chaos, violence and hatred, I think we should collectively focus on finding and sharing more love and passion in our lives. That way, maybe we will feel compelled to spread more love and compassion to those who struggle with positivity and good fortune. More than ever before, we need to pay it forward and try to make this world a better place.

A Promise of Passion For The New Year

I believe if we find happiness in our own homes and in our own hearts, it is easier to spread love and joy to others. Christmas is the perfect time to reinforce that ideal. Now that my children are grown and out of the house, the only thing I want from them during this holiday is to be with them. Since they are all living outside of New York State, I want to spend time learning more about their lives. I’m currently working on a family game to play over the holiday that will help me learn more about their adult selves. My game revolves around asking questions that will give me even more insight into their joys and fears now that they don’t live with us anymore. I miss our conversations as we drove to sports tournaments and dance competitions. Those car rides were priceless. I feel like I miss so much now that they are adults and I want to know everything about what drives them professionally and personally. I like knowing what gets them excited and motivates them to get up and enjoy every day. Moreover, I want to be reassured that they are truly happy. As far as my spouse goes, we are doing what we do every year for the holidays. We are taking time off work to enjoy our family and each other. That is the most important thing to us; it always has been. Even though we work together, we’ve always made a point of doing things outside of the salon so we can spend more time together in a non-professional setting. I am selfish when it comes to my marriage, which is probably one of the reasons we’ve been married for such a long time. I know we

are together at work all day, but that has never been enough. Now that I’m in my fifties, I’ve decided that I need to tackle every project that has ever sparked my interest. I continue to write books, because it’s a fun hobby that makes me happy. I also have a large number of followers who read my work, which makes it even more rewarding. I’m excited about the New Year, because my husband and I are embarking on a new venture. Although I’m obsessed with the Mark & M.E. Salon on Mt. Hope Avenue, I’ve always wanted to open up another location in Pittsford. It took Mark and I close to three years to find a spot that we could open up a salon that specializes in waxing. We are calling it Wax It All. Kind of catchy, huh? The second location is something in my professional life that I’ve always wanted to do. I’m knocking another item off my bucket list, because I’m tired of talking about it. It’s time to turn that dream into a reality. So what’s on your bucket list? Do you want to do more professionally? This is not another list of hotels with all night packages, bars with all you can drink specials, or busy restaurants who will serve you an abbreviated menu and a glass of bubbly with the dessert course. These options are popular and somewhat satisfying for those of us who want to celebrate with a big night on the town, filled with cocktails and a champagne toast at midnight. But Rochester Drinks believes champagne should not be reserved for toasting once or twice a year. Bottles of bubbly should be enjoyed whenever possible to make every day celebrations special. Champagne is a status symbol and no home is complete without at least one bottle chilled and ready to pop at all times. In this installment of Rochester Drinks we will help RWO readers demystify real champagne, the highest evolution of sparkling wine, that can only come from the Champagne region of France. From $25 half bottles of Veuve Clicquot, to the 1998 vintage of Dom Perignon and the 164th edition of Krug Grand Cuvée, to a $2000 fifteen liter bottle of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial we will be covering some luxurious stuff here. First let’s start with chilling bottles. Champagne tastes best when served at 47-50 degrees, about 10 degrees warmer than your refrigerator. Bottles can be chilled in a bucket of ice water for 30 minutes or stored on their sides in the refrigerator for four hours before serving. Next is the glassware. Champagne is ideally enjoyed from a stemmed flute or tulip glass. The long narrow shape of these glasses allows the bubbles to release and the flavors and aromas to fully develop. Unfortunately a coupe glass allows the effervescence and aromas of champagne to escape too quickly and randomly. Leave these glasses for boozy mixed drinks at your local cocktail bar. Once you have the right glasses and you’ve made sure they are clear of any soap residue or lipstick, we can move on to the proper way to open a bottle of champagne. Make sure to never point an unopened bottle of champagne at yourself or any of your guests. Place a towel or napkin over the top of the bottle and hold it loosely. Tilt the bottle at an angle away from your body. 116


Remove the foil. Loosen the wire cage around the cork and remove while securing the cork in place. Hold the cork firmly with one hand while gently twisting the bottle (not the cork) with the other. The cork should slide out gently with a slight audible hiss. The pop a cork makes when released quickly is very satisfying and you may not be able to resist the urge, but make sure not to let the cork fly off. It could really do some damage. If it is your first time opening a bottle of champagne and you are a little nervous we recommend watching a YouTube video, but stay away from the sabering videos. Leave sabering to the professionals.

With over 100 champagne houses to choose from, each with their own style, and multiple wines available from most houses the selection process can be a little daunting. Once corks start popping the celebratory atmosphere is contagious. Here is some simple math you can use to figure out how many bottles you may need for any given occasion. A standard 750ml bottle of bubbles will yield six (4 ounce) servings. A good rule of thumb is one or two glasses per hour for each guest. So if you are having a 3 hour dinner party for a total of 6 people and you know all guests like champagne you would need at least 6 bottles (6 people x 2 glasses x 3 hours = 36 servings or 6 bottles). While most liquor stores offer a case discount when you buy 12 standard (750ml) bottles or six magnum (1.5 Liter) bottles, we recommend an option that is a little more impressive and lends itself to better photo ops. The high levels of HCG that are produced during pregnancy have no negative effects on the pregnant woman’s body. In fact, doctors have used HCG for many years in order to help women who are experiencing hormonal issues or fertility problems. More recently, however, researchers have found that HCG can actually help the body burn fat and can be used to aid in weight loss when combined with a healthy low calorie diet and a moderate exercise routine. This discovery confirmed the work of Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, who used HCG plus a 500-calorie per day diet to direct the bodies of overweight people to burn fat instead of muscle. Although HCG is associated with pregnancy, it can safely be used by both men and women that are looking to get their weight under control. How hCG is Produced

Pregnyl, Follutein, Profasi, and Novarel are the brand names of HCG that is isolated from urine. Ovidrel, on the other hand, is the brand name of the genetically engineered product. The production process involves growing Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells in large scale cell culture. These are the cells that have been genetically engineered to contain key human DNA for making HCG. Although the HCG that is made by CHO cells is identical to native human HCG, it is not complete. Nevertheless, most forms of genetically engineered HCG are as active physiologically as the full native form.

Views of Modern Medicine

Generally speaking modern medicine has almost nothing good to say about HCG and weight loss. Some studies show positive results, and some studies show no results in comparison with placebo. Non-scientists, including doctors, have no chance to really know what the truth is by reading this body of research. A quick survey of physicians‟ websites shows a majority of doctors to be against it. The key to understanding research, however, is to know exactly how an experiment was designed, how the researchers accounted for variation among the subjects, how the experiment was carried out, the statistical techniques that were used to analyze the data, and the validity of the conclusions in comparison with the results. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get at the truth, even in scientific publications. Medical bias exists against treatments of any kind that do not make money for pharmaceutical companies. Many books have already been written on this subject, so there is no need to review the details here. Virtually all significant treatments outside mainstream medicine that offer real benefits to human health have been suppressed. When the FDA starts to see the HCG weight loss program to be a big enough threat to mainstream medical money, politics will take over. FDA will ban it completely for use in weight management. The FDA is very good at enforcing mainstream medical views such as the one against HCG for weight loss.

Will hCG Work for You?

The grass roots use of HCG in weight loss is growing fast. Local radio stations are advertising the program in spas and clinics. Hundreds of blogs and forums on the internet expound on the miracle of HCG. Kevin Trudeau and his “Weight Loss Cure‟ book and products are getting a lot of attention because of his infomercials and intense marketing. Positive testimonials are pouring in by the thousands. None of this information, nor the dim views of modern medicine, can predict with certainty whether any one person will get the desired results on HCG. The creator of the program, Dr. Simeons, never had 100% success. I have watched closely those who have not been so successful. In every case the lack of success corresponded to not following the protocol closely enough. This, by the way, is the root cause of scientific experiments that give negative results – i.e., an experimental design that does not follow the protocol exactly. The answer to the question, therefore, is that you must find out for yourself if you want to know for sure whether HCG will work for you. By the way, you will also be like scientists who have a bias before designing their experiments. Your bias will influence the success of your own experience on HCG as research on even the most

hardcore prescription drugs shows that personal belief about a treatment influences its outcome. Not even the most highly acclaimed, powerful drugs have 100% effectiveness in everyone. Your success with HCG will absolutely be better when you believe it works. This is not a placebo effect. This is simply the power of the mind to control physiologically processes.

Why hCG Works!

A lot of nonsense is being thrown around about why HCG works. The bottom line is that this hormone evolved to direct the bodies of pregnant women to use their own fat as a source of calories for the developing fetus. Dr. Simeons simply discovered that this hormone will do the same thing in women who are not pregnant, as well as in men. It directs the body to use up calories from fat. That is the fundamental explanation. The way that HCG works is, of course, much more complicated. Dr. Simeons explained that it influences the hypothalamus of the brain to guide the metabolism of fat. Although medical people have mostly ignored this explanation, a key discovery in 1994 about the master fat-burning hormone provides support for Dr. Simeons. This was the discovery of a hormone called leptin, which is also a protein hormone that directs the body to burn fat by communicating with the hypothalamus. This is the most significant scientific discovery on fat metabolism in the past century, and doctors either don’t know about it or don’t know what to do with it. vThe key point here is from a recent scientific article in the Journal of Endocrinology (Aug.

2007): “...HCG significantly stimulates the secretion of the pro-adipogenic factor, leptin, from human adipose tissue.” Nobody yet knows how these hormones work together, although the interdependence of HCG and leptin, plus insulin, is undoubtedly at the core of how we store and burn fat. It is also a delicate balance, since we can develop resistance to all of these hormones, which undermines our ability to use storage fat for energy. TLast month we talked about how to be runway-ready, looking and feeling natural in the spotlight. This month we continue with this topic. I am going to discuss the details that go into staging a fashion show, and learning how professional models adapt their techniques to suit different formats and showcase different styles. The advice in this column can easily be adapted to suit many situations where you desire to express a strong sense of confidence in your movement and body language. You can make a statement and an entrance. The world is your stage!


Fittings and rehearsals are a necessary part of any successful fashion show. Professional models understand that committing to walk in a fashion show also includes taking the time to accomplish these important components, prior to the big event. Fittings are when a model visits a designer, or store, to try on the clothes that they will be modeling, to see if they fit properly beforehand. There may be one, or several outfits for them to model. It is very important for models to be seen as cooperative, not demanding or

opinionated. Their personal opinion of the style, or color of the clothing is just that: personal. They only have to model the outfit; they are not there to buy it. At a fitting, it is important for a model to arrive on time, dressed like a model, be courteous, neat and handle the merchandise with care. Rehearsals are used to insure a good show. There may be one rehearsal or many. This is a chance for the coordinator to get the “whole picture” and the models to understand exactly what is expected of them. The models are able to get a sense of the stage they will be performing on and get comfortable with any choreography and commentary that will be part of the production. Additionally, it is an opportunity to practice the show beforehand, so that everybody has the opportunity to do their best the day of.


Fashion shows are made up of many components that include: lighting, music and commentary, which are used to bring the show together. First of all the lighting… models may have to deal with lights that run alongside the runway. They have to be careful not to touch these lights or allow any part of their outfit to hit or brush against them. For example, if they

were modeling a long wedding train or elegant fur that is being glamorously dragged behind them. Lighting can also come from around or overhead. Sometimes it is so strong that it is difficult to see. As far as the music goes, models can play to it, if they don’t go overboard. If it is slow, dramatic or romantic, they act the part. If it’s upbeat, they go for it! Music often plays an integral part of the show. It creates a mood. It can take an audience to an old familiar place or plunge them into a whole new world. Whatever the mood the music creates, good models play it for all its worth, within reason, of course! Commentary is another important element of the production. The commentator’s job is to inform the audience about what they are seeing. They talk about what the models are wearing and draw attention to the best features of each outfit. Models must pay careful attention to what is being said, so that they can physically show the features that are being described.

The “European” runway is a version of any runway, laid out on the floor, not elevated and it is often defined by the seating for the audience. “Strolling” models do not have a runway. This is a much more informal take on runway modeling. Instead, the models interact with the audience, strolling among them, allowing the members to feel the fabric, check the price and maybe even try on some part of the outfit, such as a jacket, scarf or hat.

they need to anticipate each others moves, work with each others timing and always remember to give each other enough room to move. They also play off each other’s actions and cover for each other’s mistakes.


Play along with the following example of “working an outfit.”

A note about some of the differences in runway work: for instance, when a model works the runways of Paris, Milan, London or New York City, their principal job is to show off a collection. When you watch TV, you may see the models with expressionless faces, wiggling down the runway, their arms may be swinging back and forth, or be placed firmly on their waist. Here you are watching a designer show (which displays a current collection). When a designer hires a model to show his or her line of clothes (collection) they select the most beautiful or handsome model they can. Then they put the clothes on the model and have the model “work” the outfit. Because the audience knows the model is considered one of the most beautiful people in the world, their eye is not distracted by their looks, but instead it goes to the outfit that is being presented. The model overemphasizes the movements to “sell” that outfit by showing off its many attributes. However, in the smaller cities and markets, models are working for the stores. They are giving the customer the illusion or dream that by buying the outfit they are seeing on the model, that they’ll look just as good in it. Models are sure to show all the best features of the outfit with lots of personality, expressions and including smiles.


When models work together on the runway,

Pretend a full skirt is being described, so twirl and show how full it is. If the trim is being described, you should bring your hand up to, or down toward, the trim, to draw attention to it. Use a free hand to sweep elegantly over accessories, tighten a tie, fluff a scarf, adjust a hat, accentuate a neckline or hemline, etc.

“Working” with lapels, zippers, sleeves or cuffs, means having ample poses to show them off. If the commentator talks about the qualities of the clothing being modeled, such as the warmth of the outfit, then snuggle in it. If they talk about how “hot” an outfit is, fan yourself. When a waistline is being described, move your hands up to the waistline. Try this; put your hands on your waist, thumbs are facing to the back, fingers to the front. Now push or “break” the wrist down so the palm hits the top of the hip bone. If you are wearing a bulky sweater or sweatshirt and you try this you will probably bunch the material. Instead, move your hands up under the sweater and put them on your waist (breaking down at the wrist). You may be exposing the top of the pant or waistband, but that’s okay. In fact this is the way you should show a waistband. If you are wearing a jacket, take your hands and fingers and simultaneously move back both sides of the jacket then put your hands on your waist, breaking down at the wrist, exposing the waist. The jacket may bunch just a little on the sides of or behind your hand but if the focus is on the waist - you’ve accomplished your goal. If pockets are being described, try this; put your thumbs in each pocket and leave your fingers out (cupped lightly or laying flat) or, put your fingers in and leave your thumbs out. Do not pull down or fill up a pocket, it looks sloppy. Never jam your whole hand in! If the commentator begins talking about the outfit under your jacket or coat, you will need to remove the jacket or coat. This way, the audience can see the outfit that is underneath. When you remove an outer layer, you should turn around, away from the audience (by pivoting). Then remove the piece and complete the pivot (by turning back around) and… TaDa! Now you’re showing a whole new look! Runway is a lot of fun, being the focus of attention and helping people to realize their dream; that if they just buy that outfit you’re wearing, that they will look as good as you do in it! Step out with the foot that is in front and walk to the end of the runway. 
 5. Now stop, leaving a bit of room at the end. To stop, choose the foot that you want to be in front. Stop on it. Then, bring your back foot up behind it to make a stance. 
 6. Do 2 poses. 
 7. Return to your stance. 
 8. Do a complete pivot (360°), or you can do a walk around. A walk around is literally, walking around in a circle, headed in the direction that your back foot is facing and completing that circle and then stepping into it. 9. Do 2 poses. 
 10. Return to your stance. 11. Pivot (180°). 12. Walk back up the runway to the top, pivot (180°) and end up in your stance. 13. You may now turn and leave or continue your practice by repeating steps 2-12. 
 Notes: • Always approach the runway with a “welcoming” expression and open body language. 
 • Don’t look down and don’t fidget. 
 • Keep good eye contact with your audience. • Stay focused, anticipate your changes ahead and keep everything flowing. 128

I have a friend I will call Linda, because that’s her name. She openly hates this time of year. The endless cleaning and decorating. The shopping, crowds and gift wrapping. The back-to-back diet-busting parties. Making cookies. Sending cards. Dealing with relatives. Spending money she should be saving. “My regular day-to-day life juggling my job and my family is stressful enough,” Linda said. “Then you add all the pressure to please others during the holidays and it’s just not fun. I don’t feel like I can breath again until January 2nd.” Then there are life changes that can make the holiday season seem less than festive. If you’ve lost a loved one this year and are facing the first holiday season without that person, or your relationship recently ended, or your children are far away, the holidays can feel more melancholy than joyful. Saying yes to obligations you really want to say no to can compound feelings of depression. If you always feel stressed about all you have to get done this time of year, you might be a people pleaser. Many people-pleasers confuse pleasing people with kindness. When discussing their reluctance to turn down someone’s request for a favor, they say things like, “I don’t want to be selfish,” or “I just want to be a good person.” Consequently, they allow others to take advantage of them. Here are signs you are a people-pleaser: • You take care of everyone else’s needs before your own. • You apologize for everything. • You worry that people won’t like you. • You just can’t seem to say no. • You’re always busy, and you are tired. Really tired Jackie works in retail. “I know some people’s jobs get easier in December, but mine gets 5 times harder. We work crazy extended hours, there’s so much clean-up to do after shoppers leave and people can be just downright rude. After Christmas is not much better, with sales and returns starting the very next day.” “Yet here I am, volunteering to clean the church, decorating not one but three Christmas trees at 130

It’s exhausting and the one thing I don’t have time to do is sleep.” At work and at home, it’s easy to say “yes” so often, you forget what you’re saying “yes” to. Learning how to say “no” is a powerful skill year round, but it’s particularly important if you want to focus on what really makes the holiday season peaceful and meaningful to you. Psychologists say there are four main reasons we say yes when we want to say no: 1. We’re afraid of being rude. I was brought up thinking that saying “no,” especially to people who are more senior, is rude. 2. We fear conflict. You are afraid the person might get angry if you reject him/her. This may lead to an ugly confrontation. 3. You really want to help. Deep down you really want to help and wish you had the time to help everyone. 4. You feel obligated. You feel you HAVE to go to the office Christmas party, the neighbor’s party, the school concert. Or you feel you should make 8 different kinds of cookies because your mom always did. Yet when you dig into each reason, you will find little basis for it. Why do I say that? • Saying no doesn’t mean that you are being rude. • Saying no doesn’t mean creating conflict — it’s just asserting your needs and boundaries. People who severe ties just because you say no probably aren’t very solid friends to begin with. • Saying no doesn’t mean you are never helpful. It’s more important to say yes to the right things and the right opportunities rather than saying yes to everything. • You’re most important obligation is to yourself and your own well-being. And if you’re not saying no to most things, lemme tell ya: you’re not doing yourself any favors. In a world where everything is finite, you should be prioritizing like crazy. Saying yes to everything is the fastest way to burn out.

If you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed by your holiday agenda, don’t over schedule your time and take on more than you can manage. Remember: It’s OK to slow down a bit. Focus your energy on enjoying the people in your life and for goodness sake make time for yourself. “I keep a note on my desk and on my fridge at home that says 12 ways to say no,” said Sandy. “It’s helped me so much. I have nights on my calendar in December for long hot baths with a glass of wine, evenings I want to watch television or read a book. I’ve also booked a facial, pedicure and a hair appointment. So, I can truly say I am already booked when people ask me to do more. “I’ve finally taught myself how to stop obsessing over doing it all and take time for me. This year I even told the family we’re going out for Chinese on Christmas Day. I’ll make breakfast, then I am closing the kitchen. ” So what should you be saying yes to this time of year?

SEX. In addition to boosting immunity, a

satisfying romp can slay stress and raise selfesteem, experts say. Orgasms increase endorphins (natural painkillers) and raise oxytocin levels, which promotes sound sleep.

MUSIC. Anxious? Listen to your favorite

home to bed? A good night’s sleep is incredibly important for health. In fact, it is just as important as eating healthy and exercising but can be the first thing we sacrifice to get everything done for the holidays. Start practicing now for a stress-free holiday by saying “I’m sorry, I can’t do that.” Practice saying it every morning into the mirror and then use it as many times a day as you need to.

Starving Puppy Receives A Second Chance BYASHLEY ZEH

Maintaining an SPCA designation, Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, plays a critical role in addressing cruelty to animals in the community. For a Shar-Pei puppy named Toby, that role was lifesaving. On April 14th, the Lollypop Farm Humane Law Enforcement Department received a call regarding an abandoned dog. When the investigator arrived to the scene, he found a puppy, starving, missing most of his fur. The puppy was immediately brought back to the shelter, and despite the late hour of his arrival, Toby was met by the Lollypop Farm veterinary team, led by Dr. Cristina Cadavieco, medical director at Lollypop Farm. Treatment began right away. The puppy, now named Toby, was covered in mites. Because Toby was so skinny, reintroducing nutritious food to his system was a delicate and

gradual process. At the time of his arrival, Toby could only be given a quarter of a can of prescription food, but he eagerly ate and began to relax at the shelter. The road to recovery for Toby was long. Once strong enough, Toby began to receive antibiotics. It was over a month before Toby could leave the Lollypop Farm veterinary clinic. There he received daily, individualized care and was closely monitored by the Lollypop Farm veterinary team. But as he gained weight and confidence, Toby began to transform into a playful puppy. Toby continued his care in a home with a foster family, receiving both medical and behavioral support when needed from Lollypop Farm. In a home setting, Toby gained much-needed weight and his fur grew back. Looking at him now, it’s hard to imagine the smiling pup has known anything but kindness.

Toby was adopted in July and is now thriving with a new home and family. The Lollypop Farm Humane Law Enforcement Department is charged with investigating an enforcing animal cruelty laws in New York State. The department serves Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, and Livingston counties. With five animal cruelty investigators, the law enforcement department receives no government or agency funding. Members of the community can support the organization by making donations to

S Sabrina Santiago: Tupper Queen



Sabrina Santiago, started as a high-school dropout but after years of finding her calling has soared all the way up to become a Director at a national company. Finding her way, was quite a journey, for the mother of four, who struggled to raise her children, at times as a single mom. It was in 2002, Sabrina enrolled in Bryant and Stratton and completed her paralegal degree. She went on to attend Roberts Wesleyan College, where she studied Social Work and Psychology but left school prior to getting her Bachelor’s Degree. Medical issues cut her tenure as a student short.

knowing that he could die at any time. He was avidly involved in the swim team. After his medical diagnosis, he could no longer participate for safety reasons. Sabrina gained motivation after Robert’s diagnosis to become a Tupperware consultant striving to work her own hours and being able to spend more time with her son.

Sabrina suffered a mild heart attack and seizures. Additionally, her youngest son was given a medical diagnosis including warnings, at any time, an aneurysm in his brain could burst, making his survival if it bursts, slim at best. The condition is a rare aneurysm and is inoperable. How does a woman find the strength to cope, let along work her way up to director after going through all of this in the past two years?

Sabrina dreams of earning enough money to be able to take Robert on his “dream vacation” which is to visit the Universal Studios, Harry Potter attractions. Since he was two-years-old, Robert began collecting Harry Potter memorabilia. He relates to Harry Potter because in the books and movies, Potter experienced near-death incidents but always overcame them. Robert saw a commercial (June 18, 2010) for Universal Studios when the attraction opened and wants to visit the theme park. This dream gave Sabrina a kick-start to making that happen for her son.

Sabrina’s son Robert was born prematurely at 6 months, as a twin weighing only 9 ounces. By age 6, he began having seizures. At age 7, doctors concluded he was born with an enlarged vein in his right temporal lobe (drainage vein). The aneurysm was diagnosed when he was 16. Ask for recommendations on movies in a certain genre. ie. Have you seen any great romances that take place in Europe? You can use the topic of books in a similar fashion. Who is your favorite author? Do you prefer mysteries or sci-fi?

Avoid sugar which will bring your body into a cycle of ups and downs. Go for the natural starches like sweet potatoes or high protein soups like lentil or chili. They are filling and sustaining.

Manage Your Finances Did you know that a quarter of all your finances are spent now - during the winter holiday season. That’s right. All year long, you’ve been working just to splurge on gifts for yourself and others. Did I say gifting your self? Shopping List Start with a list. Who are you shopping for? What do they want? What would you like to get them? Then think about your options. Where will you shop and when? Will you be going to the mall, your favorite boutique or do all your shopping online? Deals & a Budget

Sales start well before Black Friday, so start early. You’ll avoid the crowds and the stress. By joining email lists, you’ll learn of sales on an ongoing basis. Shop within your means. There’s no need to be paying off your December debit throughout the following year. Have a budget in place.

Building Relationships Tis the season for family cheer. Set aside quibbles and build on the strengths of your relations by coming from the heart. For out-of-town guests, have a plan in place that offers independence. Show them where the kitchen is and how to use the remote controls. Have activities set out in advance, and take care of your self by maintaining a healthy, balanced routine.

Your Relationship with Your Self This is the most important relationship you have. It carries over to all of your other relationships. It’s about your positive attitude. This brings us back to Tip #1 and the way you start your day. You may want to repeat your daily affirmation throughout the day. You can even change them!

Mindfulness When you are caught up in many things, it’s challenging to know which direction to go in. When you are fully present, priorities naturally rise to the top, and the rest drops away. These tips bring awareness to the onset of stress or its probability. They provide

The end of the year can be stressful. Social events are nonstop, school events can’t be ignored, family activities can be simultaneously fun and full of drama. And it’s not like your everyday responsibilities slow down when the holiday schedule gets crazy – the rest of your household still has dentist appointments to be on time for, homework to be completed, and field trip permission slips to be signed. It’s not just the doing of those things that’s exhausting – it’s the thinking about them, too. Someone has to figure out the scheduling and coordinate with the rest of the family, determine what everyone is wearing to Christmas dinner and grandma’s (“wait, you don’t have any nice pants that fit?”), make a list of latke ingredients for a Hanukkah party, and think of when and where to buy a toy for your children’s school charity drive. This is what psychologists call mental load, all the thinking and information gathering necessary just to figure out what chores even need to be done. While men and women have gotten closer to splitting household chores evenly, the mental load of organizing and managing those chores still largely falls on women. And research shows that we feel it. A 2012 report by the American Psychological Association, called Stress in America: Our Health at Risk, found that women experience higher levels of stress than men, and that many attribute it to the constant drumbeat of decisions 146

If you find yourself stressing over stress relief, go back to that list for a refresher on how successful you already are.


Maria Gonzalez, author of the book Mindful Leadership, says that it’s not enough just to manage your stress – you need to decrease your stress. She recommends committing yourself to mindfulness using a three-step approach, one she designed for the corporate world but which is equally applicable to the business of running your life. First, concentrate. That may sound obvious, but with so many people, tasks, events, and

electronic devices vying for our attention, it can be challenging. But learning to concentrate can start to calm some of the noise in your head and create a mental environment for serenity and progress. Second, find clarity – here’s where mindfulness really comes in. Mindfulness is a way of simply recognizing things for what they are, without anger or judgement. Third, find what Gonzalez calls “equanimity.” Acknowledge that there are pieces of life you cannot control, then release yourself from worrying about them. Of course, some things genuinely require your worry, but the goal here isn’t to zen yourself into forgetting soccer practice. Instead, use this approach to ease the negative thoughts you have about yourself. If you didn’t meet your goal of getting to the gym four times this week, take a moment to acknowledge

that you did the best you could in a world of competing priorities. As 2017 comes to a close, consider the new year a perfect opportunity to take stock of your mental load and offer yourself some compassion. There has been a lot of media going on in the news about sexual allegations throughout our entire country of men being inappropriate with women. It disheartens me to hear about new allegations every day and I have some misgivings about believing every story. As a woman I have been in situations where men and women have been inappropriate towards the opposite sex. I am also a Licensed Massage Therapist who has done over 15 thousand massages in my career to date and I have dealt with my share of inappropriate clients on my table as have many others who work this profession. Most of you have heard of the sexual misconduct allegations against one of the largest massage chains in our country. There are over 180 accounts across the country. They are from different states and various locations. Some of the locations are in states where the regulations of a Massage Therapist are much more lax then in New York. New York State makes LMT’s take a 1000 hours of schooling, which includes anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, myology, pathology and many other types of classes. They have to take a rigorous licensing exam and a thorough background check. Some of the states only have to take 500 hours of school and become certified not licensed to work on clients. I am not knocking other states or other therapists from those states, but it does have to be brought to attention when we look at what Massage Therapists have gone through over the years to get to where the profession has gotten. For many years the word Masseuse was used as a title for Massage Therapists, but we have stepped away from the term because in the 50ties and 60ties it was a term that was being linked with illegal practices. by licensed massage therapists or LMT’s, or in some states certified massage therapists to try to steer clients away from the idea that sexual acts are a part of our profession. Now saying that, and the headlines that have been circulating the news and the internet it makes the legit Massage Practice that much harder to be working in. I have been in this field for over 9 years and I have been a coworker, a mentor and a boss throughout my career to other therapists. I have heard a lot of things that have happened behind the doors of a massage room that make me cringe, and most of those are because of a client. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that the allegations that are circulating the news are not true, I would never want to silence the voices coming forward. I, myself, have been one of the voices in the past, but I also know what many therapists have put up with or have been through when the doors shut behind them. I have spoken to many male therapists who are fantastic at their jobs who have been grabbed in their rooms by their own clients inappropriately. These males are always afraid to report the

incident, because they do not want that client turning around and accusing them of being inappropriate. I personally have been grabbed in my room by male and female clients and I haven’t always reported the incident. The client may apologize or play it off as an accident. The field we work in is supposed to be built on trust and boundaries between client and therapist. That trust and those boundaries must be built with in the first 5 minutes of meeting that person. I have found while working in the field of massage that it has become my job to educate the clients on what to expect when they walk into any massage room. Many clients come to get a massage not really knowing what is expected of them or of their therapist. Do they undress? What do they take off? Where is the therapist going to work? There are many questions that have to be answered. So, I have made a short list of some of the most important questions and answers. 1.Do you get undressed? Yes, you do get undressed for a full body massage. If you do not want to undress there are styles that you do not have to get undressed for which include Shiatsu and Reiki. 2. What do you take off? All therapists will tell you to undress to your comfort level. Any clothing that is left on will either be avoided or worked over. What most therapists would prefer is that you take everything off and lay underneath the sheet and blanket, because we use oils, lotions and creams to glide across the skin and work into the muscles. Clothing gets in the way of the strokes that we use. It is possible to work over some clothing, but it will be mainly compression strokes, which may not be what you are

Are their parts of the body that will stay covered at all times and that are not allowed to be worked on? Yes. All genitals must be covered at all times, this includes the gluteal cleft (the butt crack, not the butt cheeks), the sexual organs of both males and females, and the nipples of both male and female. There are ways of draping the chest to do abdominal work. 4. What is the Gluteal Region? The Gluteal Region also known as the glutes, is the butt cheek region, the gluteal cleft (of butt crack) must stay covered at all times. The Gluteal region is all of the Glute muscles, piriformis, hamstring attachment sites, and many of the low back muscles which attach underneath the

glute muscles. This region is very important for low back, hip, and knee pain relief. 5. What is the Pectoral Region? The Pectoral Region is region that may feel invasive to some because the pectoral muscles lay underneath the breast tissue. On women the armpit region and the upper chest (ribs 1-4 maybe 5) are easily worked on without exposing or getting near the nipple region. Some may feel that this is an inappropriate region and are uncomfortable, which is why their therapist should always ask them if they can work this area. The pectoral muscles have a major role on upper back/neck pain and shoulder pain. A few of the neck muscles attach on the ribs and sternum. The armpit region has the pectoral muscles and the subscapularis (rotator cuff muscle) that tend to cause a lot of pain in the upper body and once worked on the pain usually decreases.

6. Is there a time where the breasts are allowed to be worked on? Yes. The breast tissue can be worked on when it is a medical necessity. Breast cancer that results in scar tissue and lymphedema, breast augmentations, and lactation issues are some reasons that the breast tissue can and will be worked on, by a therapist who has been trained in specific massage techniques including Manual Lymph Drainage and Scar Tissue Release. As a client, do not be afraid to ask all the questions you have or to speak up about the pressure of the massage or if the area that is being worked isn’t something that you want to have worked. There are no dumb questions, so never be afraid to ask them.

A very dear friend of mine and I were chatting via facebook after she posted a comment stating that 2017 was the Year of New Beginnings. After quite a line of messages I found myself daring to embrace this idea. Daring to consider that indeed this was to be a year of new beginnings. You see, up until about 6 months prior, I had been dabbling with the idea of starting my own business. The idea of becoming a Momtrepreneur. Stepping outside the norm of the traditional career model and accepting the challenge to myself of being 100% responsible and accountable to a business of my own. There is much much more to this than this article will allow, but let’s just say all I knew up until this point was a successful Full Time career with one fantastic company for over 24 years. Most would say ‘why mess with that?” But I was daring to consider not only that I could own my own business but to a highly successful level. Up until this point I had been praying over this decision but kept asking for a sign. I had no idea what the sign could be but I was hoping it would be some sort of sure thing showing me that the business would just do good. But alas, that was not the sign I saw, but I sure saw this sign. It did not take long for me to have total mindset change and believe this facebook post by my friend was put in front of me to say



“Hey Deb - pay attention!”. So I did! And boy am I ever glad. Once I believed I just moved forward. It seemed as though each and every day I was living this new beginning to a higher level. I found myself using I had learned in the world of business, applying it, and putting myself out there in ways I never had to before. Simple Festivities, or Holiday Hoopla BY DEBBIE SANTILLO

Between late November, and January 1st is a very exciting, fulfilling time, or it can be a season of significant stress. Many obligations and social events occur during these holiday weeks. School reunions, company parties, family events pop up on your calendar. Deciding what gift to give? Pressured to go Black Friday shopping at 4 a.m. by a friend or loved one? Yikes! These extra events can over whelm some. Other people look forward to these events and enjoy the fuss. I will share ideas for this time of year, including two favorite recipes, and let you decide if the coming weeks will be simple festivities or filled with holiday hoopla. Before the cold weather sets in, visiting a few farm markets is a fun activity to do. Fresh air while winterizing your gardens, patios, decks is enjoyable. I cut down tall grasses, put away pots, torn out vegetable vines, stems and roots, and said goodbye and pulled the annuals. This time of year, I think about ice skating. Soon ski slopes will open. Many hope for a full season of mountain bliss. You may, can foods, to enjoy throughout the coming winter. How about a good movie at a theater? Go to a concert, or support local pubs and venues offering live music. If looking for a laugh, you may want to visit a local comedy club. Entertaining at home can be considered either a challenge or fun activity. You must plan, clean, decorate, shop, cook, bake. Inviting others in for pizza and wings, or having a caterer is easier! If you have no time to prepare your home for guests, meet them at a nearby restaurant or pub. There are, as well, museums, the planetarium, house tours to enjoy. If you love the holidays, then here you go! There is decorating, menu planning, recipes you’ve been looking forward to share. You can get out of this season whatever you want. You can hibernate, head somewhere warm for the coming months, or, embrace the season. It’s up to you. If you enjoy cooking, I wish to share two of my favorite recipes for the holidays.


Oven to 425 degrees 1 frozen, package of Pepperidge Farms Puff Pastry Sheets 158


1- five pound trimmed tenderloin roast, tail removed 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 egg yolks, whisked with a cold tablespoon of water 2 pounds of minced mushrooms. You can get typical moon light or mix a few varieties 2 shallots, peeled, diced small 1 tablespoon diced fresh parsley 1 teaspoon minced garlic Corn starch 1–48 ounces can of beef broth 1 cup dry red wine 4 tablespoons butter Salt, pepper, thyme Slowly thaw pastry in refrigerator over night Unwrap pastry and with a floured board roll out till a bit wider, and longer, making sure your pastry is a bit longer than your trimmed tenderloin roast Make sure all silver and excessive fat has been trimmed from your roast Using a very large searing pan, heat one tablespoon oil, then place the roast into the pan and sear on all sides, not fully cooking. Take out and set aside to rest. Collect pan drippings and keep. Take wine first, to deglaze bottom of searing pan, scrape, then add one cup beef broth, put aside Take searing pan and sauté garlic, shallots, thyme and mushrooms in one tablespoon oil. Drain liquids into sauce pot along with beef pan drippings and deglazing juices. Take pastry and place a long row of drained mushroom duxcelle on it, the length of the roast, approx. two inches into the pastry, so that the roast can be set on it and be wrapped Take cooled tenderloin and place on top of mushroom duxcelle Roll the pastry up and over the roast, once, then fold in the ends, then roll the rest up. Fold the ends under. Place on lightly greased long sheet tray, pastry seam down Brush pastry with egg mix Place wellington in middle of oven and roast for fifteen minutes at 425 degrees, then turn the oven down to 350 degrees and allow to bake until pastry is golden brown. Temperature check your roast, while it is light golden. Roast in the middle should read no

more than 134 degrees Take roast out and let rest Take sauce pot and heat liquids, reserving 1/2 cup cool liquid to mix corn starch into Mix 3 tablespoons of corn starch into cool liquid, stirring until entirely smooth. Pour corn starch mixture into heated broth while whisking on low heat, and keep whisking until medium thick and smooth. Add parsley and turn off heat Slice wellington into 2 ½ inch slices, plating directly onto plates giving two slices per plate or place onto serving platter. Garnish! Drizzle sauce over each plated slice, or place in gravy boat. Serve along with salad, your favorite side dishes, such as mashed potatoes, asparagus or other vegetables


8-ounce dark chocolate 6 eggs, separated 3/4 cup extra-fine sugar 2 ounces Grand Marnier 1/3 cup of heavy cream 2 oranges, zest of 1 orange, chopped, zest second orange to make long orange curls Heat chocolate in the microwave, carefully Stir together 1 tablespoon chopped orange zest to chocolate, add Grand Marnier Whisk egg yolks, in bowl, with sugar over bowl of very warm water, whip until pale in color Fold chocolate mixture into egg yolk mixture over cold ice bowl Beat stiff, egg whites in bowl over bowl of ice Gently fold egg whites into chocolate mixture, using an up and over folding method, keeping mixture light and airy Pour mousse into 6-8 fancy glasses and refrigerate Whisk 1/2-pint heavy whipping cream, adding 1/3 cup confections sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, until very stiff Fill pastry bag with fluted tip and pipe onto each glass of mousse Top with an orange rind curl Whatever you decide to do, enjoy your holidays


GERI SPINO…..The Volunteer That Never Stops BY REBECCA JAFFARIAN

When I first met Geri Spino it was during her volunteer work as a Board Member for another local non profit agency. She worked tirelessly and devoted endless hours planning a walk, coordinating a monthly sewing group, chairing a pasta dinner while still managing her own non profit organization. Why? Because that’s just who Geri Spino is. She’s the Energizer Bunny with a heart of gold. When interviewed, Geri mentioned Jackie Waldman author of “The Courage to Give”. The Courage to Give, tells 30 stories of people who have had something happen to them physically and/or emotionally, yet when they started helping others, their lives changed miraculously. Waldman recommends starting simple and small – you don’t have to begin an organization, just try volunteering once a month. “If you can just put your own stuff aside for a moment – that’s the courage.” On October 31, 2004, a repeat drunk driver took the life of Geri’s son Scott. The driver of the car was 23, had two prior DWI convictions. He had no license, yet still chose to drive, while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty to one count of firstdegree vehicular manslaughter, and two counts of driving under the influence. Scott was a vibrant, twenty-eight year old young man and cherished son. He was a respected and admired teacher and coach in the Rochester City School District. He was good natured, kind, giving, sincere. He lived life wanting to make a difference in the lives of each child and player he coached. He repeatedly stated to his students and players that he only wanted them to succeed. Scott’s contribution to those whose lives he touches were visibly recognized through the course of his funeral. There were thousands that attended and many more that shared their grief with cards, notes, flowers, donations, hugs, and tears. For one young man to make such a difference in the lives of others is truly a statement of how he lives his life. The Scott Spino Foundation was established in 2005. The mission of 160


the Scott Spino Foundation is to focus on supporting programs that provide education, coaching and mentoring to children within our community. Investing in today’s youth enhancing tomorrow’s future. What role does the Scott Spino Foundation play in our community? The Foundation’s Literacy & Warm Program plays a necessary role. Each month over 200 volunteers take time out of their day to read to children in 19 schools throughout the community. After the reading session each child is given a new copy of the book to take home with them to reach over and over again as well as share with their family. Scott Spino Literacy Program The mission of the Literacy Program is to increase students’ access to literature. With this access, the Foundation has seen an enhancement in

the students reading skills, an improvement in their word recognition, and the beginning or expansion of their home library. The program has been designed to open the students’ imagination to the world of reading, instilling a love of the written word. This mission is accomplished by pairing students with adults who care enough to share their fluent literacy skills, and who embrace the idea of “today a reader tomorrow a leader.” The program consists of more than 200 volunteers. Our volunteers read one on one with an assigned student from grades Kindergarten through first grade. The volunteers attend the program one day each month. Each month, the volunteers are asked to purchase one or two books to read with their student. At the end of the monthly visit, the student gets to keep the book(s), to enjoy again or to share with a friend or family member. The Foundation also sponsors a monthly Volunteer Reader. The Volunteer Reader reads to one entire class of Kindergarten students. Through our Keeping Kids Warm Program we provide brand new winter coats to 1,200 children in need each year helping to improve their selfconfidence, peer acceptance, school attendance, and overall wellness. The true meaning of the holiday spirit is captured each year in the smiling faces of the children in the Rochester City School District, Greece Central School District, Henrietta, Holley, Kendall, and Gates. What makes the Scott Spino Foundation successful? The Foundation is successful first and foremost because of love and respect our friends and family have for our beloved son Scott. Our son was needlessly taken from us due to a repeat drunk driver. He lived his life making the choice to always help a friend or make a difference in the life of a child. Now our friends and his have made the choice for the past 14 years to consistently support, donate their time and money to help us carry on Scott Legacy of love to make a difference in the life of a

child. Their commitment and dedication are the foundation for our success. We have turned a tragic unforeseeable death into a something heartwarming. Your Foundation is unique because you only do one or two events a year, please tell us about that and why? Tell us about Bunco? The foundation typically holds one or two events per year because we feel strongly that they should mission focused. We have been hosting a golf tournament for the past 14 years which has been great success. All proceeds from this event our used to purchase new coats and winter accessories for child of need in our community We host a dice game – Bunco Bash for Books which for the past year has had over 250

attending and raised over $15,000 for the purchase of new books.

Who or what are your biggest inspirations in your life?

Approximately 98% of all proceeds from our events are utilized to purchase new coats, winter accessors, new books and scholarships for children in our community. Each of our fundraisers is affordable, fun and profitable because the attendees know that their donations will be used to help the children in our community.

My son Scott is and continues to be the biggest inspiration in my life. His goals, ambitions, love of life and giving are the attributes that I admire. I didn’t realize until he died how much he meant to his friends and the children he taught. He encouraged them to be the best they could be and told them if they could read then could achieve great things.

What unique challenges and rewards come from working in the nonprofit sector?

What are some of your professional goals for the future?

The biggest challenge is getting grants to support our Literacy & Warm Programs.

My professional goals for the future are to raise awareness concerning the rising poverty level of children in our community. To keep the public informed about the foundation and the accomplishments we have made over the

Who are some of your influences today? Why? The influences that motivate me are the poverty level of the children in our community. I feel that no child should have to bear the burden of poverty. I would like to do whatever I can to ease the burden Growing up, who were some of your role models? My parents – I grew up in a loving caring family. They displayed the values that would allow me to grow and appreciate the things in life that were important such as learning, friendship, loyalty and most of all love of family. Do you think it’s important for nonprofit organizations to partner with another nonprofit’s? and why? Non-profits should partner with other nonprofits who have the same mission/goals/objectives. We can have accomplished more together, you would eliminate duplication of effort, touch more lives. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much Measuring the success of a nonprofit-corporate partnership doesn’t have to be hard. If you bring

the right partners and experts together, and are honest and realistic about your objectives and expectations, your partnership can have a significant impact on the nonprofit and the community, while also benefiting your business. What are your three (3) biggest accomplishments? My children My family The Scott Spino Foundation – turned a heartbreaking event into something that carried on Scott’s wonderful being into the future. There’s nothing more important than children. The Scott Spino Foundation has been able to invest approximately $425,000 into the Rochester community. These investments truly make a difference in the lives of children: • 37 Scholarships ( over $80,000 in scholarships have been awarded) • The Warm Project has distributed more than 13,500 new coats and over 18,000 hats and gloves in 15 schools throughout the Rochester community (including Greece, RSCSD, & Henrietta) • The Scott Spino Literacy Program has given away over 57,000 new books to children in over 17 schools throughout the Rochester community For more information visit:



For many people, the holidays are a time of excitement and joy. Feeling grateful for what they have and are anxious to share time and gifts with their loved ones. But for others, it is a time of stress, anxiety and overwhelm. Do you find yourself dreading the holidays as they approach? Do you feel anxious and stressed out? I bet you ask yourself, “why does this happen to me? The holidays are supposed to be awesome, yet I feel awful.” It will be ok. Take a deep breath and relax for a moment as we go through this exercise. Sometimes we just need to find the source of our feelings. If you can pinpoint and address it, you will be able to overcome it. The coaching model comes into play here if you can write it all down. First, you have your circumstance which may be an unwelcome guest or the friend/family member that makes you feel bad about yourself whenever you are in their presence. You may just feel overwhelmed with so many people all in one place. There is always a source to your feelings which is why we feel anxious or frustrated. You are in control of your feelings. Next, we have your thought about your circumstance which causes a feeling which in turn will trigger an action on your part and finally your result. Let’s use an example: You have a family member that you only see at the holidays and typically that person says or does something that really upsets you. 164


Your circumstance is: The family member.

that probably don’t serve you well.

What is your thought about that family member? Something like, “She always makes me feel bad about my life choices or he brags about all of his accomplishments so much that it annoys me.” Or whatever the thought is that you are having about your circumstance.

Finally, what is your result? The result may be that you had a bad holiday experience because of this other person. You have missed out on some fun events due to how you reacted. In general, your result is not a good one.

How does that thought make you feel? Remember, thoughts cause your feelings, not the circumstance. You may feel

uncomfortable, mad, sad, jealous, stressed or tense. Feelings are vibrations in your body which, in this case, are usually unwelcome feelings. How will you react or act because of your feelings? You may retreat into a state of depression or you may lash out at this person. You may leave the party early because you don’t want to deal with how you are feeling. There are so many actions you may take

Just changing how you think about a circumstance can change everything. Let’s say that you know you are going to be with people that you don’t want to be with. You can think a new thought, like “my life is good and whatever anyone says or does will not change my already happy/peaceful life.” What other people do or say is not in your control so therefore it puts the negative energy on them. You know that you are happy without this person or people in your life and their behavior belongs to them, right? Try to look at them with curiosity and fascination. Like Iyanla Vanzant says, “don’t make other people’s crazy about you.” You have your own life and world to be in control of. Let those people make their own impressions on the world. You also have to remember that not everyone is going to like you and you have to be ok with that. I also like the analogy that “you might be the sweetest, ripest, most delicious peach on the tree, but not everyone likes peaches.” OK, now you have changed your thought, how does that make you feel? If you feel good about your thought that your life, as it is, makes you happy then perhaps

I bet you ask yourself, “why does this happen to me? The holidays are supposed to be awesome, yet I feel awful.” you can look at those people and feel sad for them or think of ways to make them feel better about what they are saying to you. Just remembering that other people’s words cannot hurt you. It is what YOU THINK about their words that can hurt you. Thinking a new thought changes everything. Now that you feel better, how will you act? You may decide that you are not going to leave early because there are other people at the event that you would like to talk to and catch up with. You won’t feel sad or mad or anxious because you know your life is in order and someone else telling you things they really have no idea about just can’t hurt you.

Your result will be a lovely holiday, shared with family and friends that you choose to chat with or interact with and realize the negative circumstance as just something you have zero control over. It is good to keep in mind that you have no control over circumstances but you have 100% control over what you think. Knowing that the way other people behave really has no impact on you and what they think about you is none of your concern. Remember, you cannot control other people or the world for that matter, so focusing on what you can control will make your life so much better. Now go ahead and enjoy your holidays this year, knowing that you are strong and are in control of your thoughts and feelings.

Are you the person who says, my skin feels fine I don’t need to moisturize, or if you do you think you don’t need to do it every day? Well, you really do and you need to do it often. Not just once a day or when you feel like it, but everyday and often. Your skin needs that nourishment. Why do we need any moisturizer at all? Please allow me to tell you. Using the right kind of moisturizer for your skin in the morning and evening, or whenever needed can help maintain its balance. When your skin is too dry or too oily, many common skin problems like acne can start to surface. Moisturizing can reduce the appearance of blemishes; make your skin look softer, and more plump. In addition to moisturizer feeling great, it can keep your skin clear, smooth, and wrinkle free in the future. If you are not convinced, I have 5 reasons why you should:



Moisturizing reduces the chance of skin problems. Using the right moisturizer for your skin can help maintain its balance. If your skin tends to be oily you should look for lotions instead of creams, and try to find a moisturizer with exfoliant ingredient. If your skin tends to be dry, look for a cream as they have higher oil content. Moisturizing can reduce the appearance of other blemishes. Freshly moisturized skin has a healthy glow, which can even out any existing blemishes. Some moisturizers have some tint or self-tanner that can work with any skin tone. Moisturizing helps your skin stay young. The face, ears, neck and chest are the most sensitive area on your skin. They regenerate more often than any other area of your skin. The daily loss of skin cells leaves these areas vulnerable to the dryness and the elements.

In fact, they are the highest risk areas for skin cancer. Moisturizing can help give your sensitive skin the boost it needs to repair itself and stay healthy. Moisturizing fights wrinkles. The plump, firm feeling in your face after moisturizing isn’t an illusion. In fact, properly moisturized skin slows the process of fine lines and wrinkles at a fraction of the rate of those with dry skin. Moisturizing is a perfect end to a hot shower. Moisturizers come in two forms, Humectants and Emollients. Humectants draw water into the outer layer of skin(the epidermis) from the middle layer of skin(the dermis) as well as from the environment. Glycerin is an example of a Humectant. Emollients are moisturizers that make your skin feeling smooth and soft while sealing existing moisture to the face, Emollients can be oil based or water based, and include substances like petroleum jelly, carrier oil, or silicone oils and isopropyl myristate. Most moisturizers are emollient creams that contain humectants, so you won’t have to choose between the two. The skin’s natural oil called sebum is produces by tiny sebaceous glands that are located

inside each hair follicle. Sebum works it’s way up each hair follicle, collecting skin cells and dirt along the way. Once it reaches the surface it forms a sort of protective barrier that guards us against viruses and bacteria. When we wash our faces we strip the oily coating off of our skin. This makes us more susceptible to allergens, dryness, outside elements, cigarette smoke etc. By cleansing our faces with a gentle soap and a layer of moisturizer, we can keep or skin hydrated, healthy and attractive. What would happen if we never washed our face or moisturized? Dry skin and the underproduction of sebum. Conditions of hot or cold weather, or low humidity only worsen the dryness. Without the assistance of an additional moisturizer, your skin would start cracking, itching and flaking, and become tight and red. Your face will also age before it’s time growing coarser.

When you are finally ready to take the plunge into home ownership, you don’t have control over whether it’s a buyer’s market or seller’s market at that point in time. Real estate forecasting is notoriously difficult, so do the best you can with the conditions you’ve got. Recently our area has certainly been in a seller’s market, meaning inventory is generally low, and there are many buyers competing for these homes. But I am here to provide guidance for making the best of this market, so you will be ready, with your financing in hand, when you find your dream house.


Here are other things you can do to manage a seller’s market when you are looking to buy a new house: Get Pre-Approved for Your Loan: A seller’s market means that not many homes are available in your area, rendering more buyers than sellers. This causes prices to remain high, and the competition can be fierce for a quality home. If you are in competition with other buyers, you will need be ready to come in quickly with an offer. Having your paperwork in order with a loan officer from a reputable mortgage banker such as Premium Mortgage will make your offer far more attractive to the seller, as they know you’ve met the

At a recent Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra open rehearsal, generously supported by the ​Konar Family Foundation​, one of our participants stated that, at this stage of his disease he is uncomfortable around crowds, but the private setting that the RPO open rehearsal afforded him made him feel comfortable and he was​ ​able​ ​to​ ​again​ ​enjoy​ ​ the​ m ​ usic​ t​ hat​ h ​ e​ h ​ ad​ s​ o​ ​ badly​ ​missed. Come join us for an art program where you can reminisce and explore your artistic side; exercise with others in a safe and nurturing environment; and attend a support group where​​you​​can​​ share​ ​with​ ​others​ ​in​ ​a​ ​safe​ ​and​ ​confidential​ ​ environment. { PARTNERS ON THE JOURNEY } Though​ ​we​ ​recognize​ ​that​ ​Alzheimer’s​ ​disease​ ​may​ ​disrupt​ ​memory,​ ​impact​ ​ meaningful relationships​ ​and​ ​impede​ ​independence,​ ​this​ ​year​ ​we​ ​made​ ​a​ ​ commitment​ ​as​ ​an organization​ ​to​ ​try​ ​a​ ​new​ ​and​ ​fresh​ ​approach​ ​by​ ​taking​ ​this​ ​ disease​ ​on​ ​and​ ​taking action!​

Association​ ​International Conference​ ​that​ ​ took​ ​place​ ​in​ ​London,​ ​England.​ ​The​ ​study​ ​ demonstrated​ ​that​ ​even​ ​a slight​ ​increase​ ​in​ ​ social​ ​interaction​ ​had​ ​a​ ​positive​ ​impact​ ​on​ ​ those​ ​affected​ ​by Alzheimer’s.​ ​Included​ ​were​ ​ more​ ​than​ ​800​ ​dementia​ ​residents​ ​living​ ​in​ ​ 69​ ​nursing homes​ ​in​ ​the​ ​U.K.​ ​Staff​ ​members​ ​ in​ e​ ach​ h ​ ome​ w ​ ere​ t​ rained​ t​ o​ e​ ngage​ i​ n​ s​ imple​ ​ social activities​ ​with​ ​the​ ​residents.​ ​When​ ​this​ ​ engagement​ w ​ as​ c​ ombined​ w ​ ith​ j​ ust​ o​ ne​ h ​ our​ ​ of social​ i​ nteraction​ i​ t​ w ​ as​ s​ hown​ t​ o​ i​ mprove​ t​ he​ ​ resident’s​ q​ uality​ o​ f​ l​ ife​ a​ nd​ e​ ase​ t​ heir agitation. Though​ ​we​ ​witness,​ ​every​ ​day​ ​the​ ​positive​ ​



impact​ ​that​ ​social​ ​engagement programs​ ​have​ ​ on​ ​those​ ​that​ ​we​ ​serve​ ​it​ ​is​ ​reassuring​ ​to​ ​be​ ​ validated​ b​ y​ a​ ​ c​ linically based​ r​ esearch​ p​ rogram.​ ​ Other​ ​studies​ ​have​ ​also​ ​demonstrated​ ​that​ ​ social​ ​engagement positively​ ​impacts​ ​the​ ​lives​ ​ of​ ​those​ ​affected​ ​by​ ​Alzheimer’s.​ ​In​ ​addition,​ ​ studies​ ​have also​ ​shown​ ​that​ ​participating​ ​in​ ​ Alzheimer’s​ ​Association​ ​programs​ ​may​ ​ensure​ ​ that​ ​the person​ ​with​ ​the​ ​disease​ ​is​ ​able​ ​to​ ​stay​ ​ in​ ​their​ ​home​ ​longer. This recurring column by David S Jenkins of Rochester Personal Defense, LLC will explore different areas and methods of personal protection and self defense. The holiday shopping season is where a vast majority of our buying is done. It’s very exciting and hectic and that’s where even the most security conscious among us can let our guard down. With trying to stop at that certain store on the way home, when it’s snowing, and you’re tired, or when you are just too preoccupied with all of the events, family, and other tasks, it is very easy to become a victim. Yep, even the criminals love the holidays!


Online shopping has become very popular and it helps alleviate some of the shopping stress. This also creates a whole host of issues that you need to be aware of. First off is the whole credit card theft issue. It’s happening more and more where someone’s card number or information are stolen and used. Yes, your credit card company is pretty good about catching fraud issues but they’re not perfect. YOU have to be diligent about your own security as well. Here are some tips: 1. Don’t let your card out of your sight 2. Keep track of where you have shopped and 180


how much you have spent. 3. Use cash whenever possible to avoid your credit card becoming compromised. 4. Call your card issuer as soon as you see anything on your statement. With online access, most transactions will show up within a few seconds or minutes after they are made.


So, there will be a time where you are going to have to brave the crowds to do some shopping. No matter how quick or short you perceive the trip to be, make sure you take the extra minute to remind yourself to be aware and to have a plan. It doesn’t matter if the trip is to the large mall or a small plaza, getting into

and out of our car is a time that is favorable for a criminal to strike, and forgetting to pay attention and use your awareness to your advantage in a rush just isn’t worth the risk. It’s the holidays so unless you’re lucky finding a parking spot will be a task in and of itself. That perfect spot under a lamp post and a straight shot to the front door is probably not available. In the parking lot it is fairly easy for someone to hide around a vehicle. It is also fairly easy for a practiced criminal to move in plain sight around vehicles in a way that wouldn’t cause suspicion. Here is a scenario for you to imagine: You have just pulled into a parking spot in a well lit area, did a good, thorough scan around your vehicle to include using your mirrors, and, after not seeing anything suspicious, you turn the car off. Just as you start to get out of your vehicle you notice someone walking down the passenger side of your car and it appears that they are getting into the car you parked next to. It’s the holidays and of course you’re in a rush but do you continue to get out of your vehicle? In this situation I would highly recommend taking that extra time to err on the side of caution. I would suggest that you ensure your doors are locked and just sit and wait for them to get in to drive away. Maybe even starting your car and finding a different spot is the better move. In this day and age it is very rare to see someone actually stick a key into a car to unlock the door. Maybe they are just looking at their cell phone before getting into the car but their back is to you so you cannot be sure.


Maybe they are staging a weapon of some sort. This is a hypothetical with a lot of maybes, however, it’s the holidays and there are things to do with little time to spare. Take that little bit of extra time to make sure it remains a happy holiday. You don’t have to be a Grinch: When the holidays roll around people generally seem a little happier and a little friendlier. The feelings of good will can be contagious but doesn’t mean we should compromise our safety because we are afraid someone will think we are a Grinch. Someone saying “Happy Holidays” as they close the distance and encroach into our personal space is not okay. Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean we throw out all we know about awareness, self defense, and reading people and their actions. There is no shortage of good people collecting for various groups in need during this time of year. There also are some very savvy criminals out there who use this fact to

their advantage and pose as volunteers seeking donations. It provides them a disarming excuse to get you to let your guard down, get into your personal space, and open your purse or wallet. Be cautious, especially if the solicitation is happening in the parking lot and/or away from other people. It is perfectly acceptable and advised to maintain your personal distance by using good verbal commands. If you want to donate there is nothing wrong with telling them you will gladly donate but to meet you at a well lit and populated area. Someone who is genuinely collecting for a charity group will understand, gladly give you the space, and happily meet you at the place of your designation. If they do not something might be amiss. Look them in the eye, watch their hands, move in a manner that will put you in a position of advantage to see your surroundings and be prepared to defend an attack. It is also quite possible one of these criminals could show up on your front door step ringing the bell seeking donations. Maybe you open the door, give them a cash donation, and they

pocket it while moving on to the neighbors house. It could be something worse so why open yourself up to a potential attack. It is perfectly acceptable to talk to them without opening the door and ask them to leave the literature in your mailbox so you can donate at a later time. This Holiday Season security tips really apply regardless the time of year but with the holidays it’s easier to get caught up in the festivities as well as providing more opportunities for those who look to do harm. Stay aware, train hard, train often, and train in context. Have a SAFE and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year. With a little bit of effort, be it enthusiastically or begrudgingly, these miniworkout suggestions can brighten your spirits and make your body feel great!

- Elevate your shoulder blades toward your ears

I’ve compiled four 15-minute exercise methods that can fit snugly into your holiday (and year round) fast-paced, where-did-the-day-go times. Over time, fitness ‘episodes’ can positively affect your mood, your circulation and energy level while improving your body composition. Find one that best suits your needs during this hectic time of year. Or try all four!


Isometric Exercise: This form of exercise is ideal if you’re confined to a stationery position for hours at a time, or have other factors that prevent you from mobilizing your joints. This is exercise in which the joint angle and muscle length do not change during the contraction. Envision a plank position or squeezing your hands together for a set amount of time. Staying seated or standing for long periods of time is insidiously harmful to one’s posture and circulation. Optimize your time by doing isometric exercise which do not require one single piece of exercise equipment and can be fairly discreet as well. Below is a suggested Isometric Workout for 15 minutes. Maintain these exercises for 10-30 seconds each: - Curl your toes under; then lift your toes upward - Elevate your leg or simply contract your thigh muscles, then the other -Rise up onto the balls of your feet - Bend a leg deeply at the knee & lift your foot toward your gluteal, contracting hamstrings - Contract your buttocks muscles - Draw your navel inward, creating tension in the abdomen (or do the plank exercise) - Pull your shoulder blades together (which conversely stretches the pectorals) - With arms in front and elbows bent 90º, press your palms together 184


- Keeping arms at your sides, intensely straighten them, or do so one at a time - Intensely bend arms simultaneously or one at a time - Repeat this series as many times as you can in a 10-15 min timeframe With no need for exercise equipment, this is another superb way to get or stay fit. You’ll also eliminate drive time by not going to a fitness center. Below is a suggested Body Weight Workout for 15 minutes. Your goal can be for “x” number of repetitions per set or a timed exercise format Heel Raises Air Squats Split Squats (aka Stationery Lunge) Planks Reverse Plank (face the ceiling, heels & palms on the floor, elevate hips w/ head neutral) Burpees or Jumping Jacks Push-Ups Mountain Climbers Boat Pose Triceps Push-ups Reverse Lunge Burpees or Jumping Jacks


For those who prefer training at a fitness center yet time remains a serious factor, Olympic lifting is the way to go. No time-wasting here! Below is a suggested 15 minute workout, noting these require intense focus. While I’m certainly not advocating for anything less than that, choosing one of these exercises and using a workload that can be accomplished in 15 minutes requires some forethought. In their truest form, these are high volume 1-rep sets. For the proposed 15 minute workout, you can decide if you want to do 3-4 sets maximum at your heaviest effort or train much lighter yet still derive the benefits of this whole body workout in one exercise. Clean Jerk and Press for x number of sets you can do CORRECTLY in 15 min Done! OR The Snatch for x number of sets you can do CORRECTLY in 15 min Done!


Long periods of aerobic exercise have their place when training for ultra-, full- and half marathons as well as other extreme endurance activities. However, in keeping to the 15-minute window, aerobic exercise is not possible. ANaerobic exercise takes center stage and is scientifically proven to burn body fat after the session is over. With an immense list of activities to choose, creating an anaerobic/interval workout is fun! Walking, jogging, sprinting, cycling, swimming, skating, cross-country skiing, recumbent cycling, and so much more! Below is a suggestion for an anaerobic/interval workout. 2 minute warm up consisting of any activity you’ve selected 1 minute at your fastest do-able speed 2 minutes at a recovery pace/speed 2 minutes at your fastest, do-able speed 1 minute at a recovery pace/speed 2 minutes at your fastest, do-able speed 3 minutes at you fastest, do-able speed 1 minute at a recovery pace/speed 1 minute cool down pace/speed As with ANY fitness activity, be certain your form is correct and that you do not have any conditions that can worsen with physical activity. Hiring a qualified Personal Trainer or Coach for education, guidance and accountability can readily enhance your efforts.
