Summer 2025 programme direct flights go on sale

Following another successful summer which has seen growth in passenger volumes from the Isle of Man of over one third, C. I. Travel Group have launched their 2025 summer flying programme.

Between May and October next year, the holiday company will offer a weekly programme of direct flights to the Spanish Balearic Islands of Majorca and Ibiza, Malaga on Spain’s Costa del Sol and Faro on Portugal’s Algarve coast.

As in previous years, islanders will have the opportunity to book flights only or an inclusive holiday. Recognising that for many families, holiday costs will usually be higher during the summer school holidays, the company has increased child discounts for most flights in July & August.

Commenting on the launch, Robert Mackenzie, C.I. Travel Group’s Managing Director said, “The continued support we receive from Islanders for these direct flights is quite overwhelming and we are so pleased to be able to add direct flights to Ibiza next year. This means a choice of destinations to choose from in 2025.”

“In particular, we want to offer the best value possible for families and our higher child discounts of up £100.00 per child for a return flight are designed to help with the cost of their holiday,” he continued.

Gary Cobb, Isle of Man Airport Director said: “It is fantastic to see C. I. Travel’s direct flight programme go from strength to strength with a further increase in capacity and a new route to Ibiza next summer. This addition provides island residents with another easy and convenient route to one of Europe’s most soughtafter holiday island destinations.”

All flights from the Isle of Man next summer will once again be operated by FlyDirect’s partner airline BA CityFlyer, a subsidiary of British Airways, using the popular Embraer 190 jet aircraft which offers a high degree of comfort.

Flights to Majorca & Ibiza take around 2 hours 45 mins, whilst to Malaga & Faro the flying time is around 3 hours. All flight prices include 20kg of hold baggage, as well as 10kg of cabin baggage – a significant extra saving for those who may have previously chosen to travel via the UK, with low-cost airlines charging up to £50 per checked-in bag for each flight.

Flights are on sale now and customers can book online through www.flydirect.co.uk or over the phone.

The acquisition by SQRx led by Grahame, helps to position SQR as an industry leader, helping to to achieve our mission to make the world a safer place to be, not just by knowing who you are working or transacting with, but trusting them. We are excited to collaborate more closely with Grahame and leverage his unparalleled expertise”.

This collaboration allowed SQR to design a more targeted, effective, and meaningful digital accessibility solution. Long before Ieisha Howard applied to be an intern with the Clerk of Tynwald’s Office, she knew the position would prove to be a worthwhile experience.

“I’d been a work experience student here then later, after talking to a previous intern who had found the time she’d spent at Tynwald really valuable, I became certain I wanted to join the programme and gave it a lot of thought while I was at university,” said Ieisha, 23, adding: “This internship is everything and more than I expected.”

Manx-born Ieisha holds a first-class Honours degree in sociology from Cardiff University. She said: “I’m finding I can apply a lot of my university studies and the research process required for my dissertation on social policy to my internship role. What’s especially rewarding is that the research and committee work I’m involved with is not only meaningful, but I feel it’s also relevant to this generation and, potentially, to future generations.

‘The work is very diverse, so I’m gaining an extremely broad insight into how the government of the Isle of Man and the Manx political process function.

“Working here It would be all too easy to feel nervous, but the team are so supportive and have helped me navigate how the Clerk of Tynwald’s Office operates. Similarly, Tynwald members have made me feel very welcome and I can see how close to the electorate they are. I’m finding it very motivating to be working in an environment where people are receptive to new ideas and perspectives. I’m only here for six months so I want to get to grips with as much as I can and, ideally, I would like to have maybe one of my research pieces published.

“Working here is challenging and stretching in a positive way. There are always new things to learn and I’ve been given such a wide range of responsibilities, including serving as an assistant clerk to a number of committees, producing research briefing papers,

working with the Hansard and engagement teams and assisting with tours of the chambers.

“I’ll be able to apply the skills I’m developing here to whatever career I pursue and although I’ve always been quite a confident person, engaging with so many different people here and the exposure I’m getting to the parliamentary process have certainly given my selfconfidence a boost.

“I’m Manx born - my first language was Manx - so for me, being at the heart of the Manx democratic process is incredibly fulfilling, not only intellectually but also because I feel that, in some way, I’m making a positive contribution to the Isle of Man. I feel more connected to the Island, its heritage and its parliamentary system. I’ve always been proud to be Manx, but now I’m prouder than ever.”

Fynoderee Distillery ready to deliver to European doorsteps

As part of an overall strategy to further the export of their premium Manx made spirits around the world, Isle of Man-based craft producer, The Fynoderee Distillery, is delighted to announce a new “Direct to Consumer” offering to six European countries.

Thanks to a new partnership with leading Danish drinks fulfilment house, Bemakers, a range of Fynoderee spirits are now available for members of the public to order online from Fynoderee.com for postal delivery to home addresses in France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands and Austria. These orders can be made online from anywhere in the world for delivery to these 6 countries, with further countries expected to be announced soon.

This is the first time Fynoderee has been able to offer its customers a reliable postal service to mainland Europe, as British postal restrictions prevent the postage of high strength spirits outside of the British Isles due to differing customs and alcohol duties.

Co-Founder of The Fynoderee Distillery Tiffany Kerruish said: “It has always been a source of great frustration to us when our overseas fans have been unable to order from our website. Similarly, when locals have wished to send a bottle to friends and family abroad they have been unable to do so until now.”

Co-Founder Paul Kerruish added: “The Bemakers platform seamlessly integrates with Fynoderee.com and makes it very straightforward for orders to be made for delivery in these countries. Customers simply visit our website as usual and opt for the country they wish to send to, and then continue their shopping experience with us. Once the purchase is made, Bemakers then dispatches the relevant product from their Danish distribution centre and deals with the taxes and duties relevant to each country.”

Tim Cowsill, Chief Executive, Business Isle of Man added: “Today is a brilliant day for Fynoderee and the Isle of Man. We are pleased that the Fynoderee team will now be able to share their award-winning Manx products with a wider audience. We wish Fynoderee all the best in this endeavour as they join other food & drink producers from the Isle of Man that have a wellestablished base of loyal consumers in Europe and further afield.”

Tiffany explained further: “Online ordering has been an important sales channel for us since we launched our distillery and we have posted out over 13,000 orders via Isle of Man Post and courier to adreesses in the Isle of Man and UK, many of which have been for multiple bottles. Selling direct to our customers achieves the best margin for us as the producer and allows us to own the customer journey and build a loyal following of repeat customers.

“This next stage is very exciting and for any Fyn fan who has friends and family in these countries and wishes to send some Manx magic to their door - now is the perfect time! We know we also have many fans in Ireland and we hope to add this location to our export locations as soon as possible.”

Businesses still have major concerns about minimum wage proposals, says Chamber

Businesses have major concerns about the short and long-term economic impacts of proposals to harmonise living wage and minimum wage rates.

That’s the view of Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce which is again highlighting this issue following recent news coverage about a detailed report commissioned by the Island’s Minimum Wage Committee. It revealed that plans to increase the minimum wage to £13.73 in April 2025 could cost private and third sector businesses up to £188million. Overall, the report highlights some potential benefits, but also reflects business community concerns about potential negative impacts.

While businesses support moves to help lower paid employees, says Chamber, the proposed increase will have an impact that is not in the Island’s long-term economic interests and could lead to more redundancies and business closures. Most importantly, the Island’s biggest business network says many employers that are already under extreme financial pressure need more time to phase in the changes. Chamber is urging Government to reconsider the April 2025 deadline to bring in the new minimum wage rate and look at what support could be provided to help businesses offset some of increased costs caused by the rise.

Chamber CEO Rebecca George said: “Chamber appreciates the good motives behind Tynwald and Isle of Man Government’s commitment to transition to the minimum wage by April 2025, but there are still widespread concerns in the business community. While the objective of harmonising the minimum wage with

the living wage aligns with broader social policies Chamber, acting on behalf of the business community, has major concerns regarding the proposed timeline and its potential economic ramifications. Increasing the minimum wage hourly rate to £13.73 in April 2025 would represent an increase of 28% when compared to the 2023 rate of £10.75. The proposed increase is approximately 14 times greater than the current inflation rate which is around 2%. The living wage increases are also above the inflation rate, and the combined effects of these disparities will make IOM businesses less competitive. But businesses are also concerned about the speed at which the new minimum wage rate is being introduced and the difficulties it creates in terms of employers maintaining financial sustainability.”

The Minimum Wage Committee report (which was conducted by London-based firm Pragmatix Advisory) also highlighted that the impact of any wage increase for lower paid workers would be diluted by an increase in tax and National Insurance paid by this group. It’s important to note, says Chamber, that while the IOM minimum wage has risen by around 38% since 2018, personal allowances have risen by only 9% over the same period.

Overall, says Chamber, while higher minimum wages can improve living standards for workers, the impacts on a number of sectors in the Manx economy are likely to vary depending upon individual business models, market conditions, and consumer responses.

Ørsted give update about Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm

Ørsted – the business behind proposals for the Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm – say they are ‘encouraged’ by public responses during the recent consultation period.

The community consultation was held between July and September offering residents across the Island a chance to find out about the secure green energy and economic benefits it could bring to the Island, full details about the proposals, plus opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback.

Detailed information was available online, a booklet was delivered to over 43,000 residential addresses, and news updates were shared across print, online and broadcast media. A series of public events was held in Laxey, Ramsey, Douglas, Peel, Port Erin and the Royal Manx Agricultural Show. All the events featured display boards and a chance to speak directly to the Mooir Vannin team. Visitors also had the chance to use VR headsets to see what the wind farm could look like from four different locations on the Island’s east coast. During the consultation period, the Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm team held meetings with Isle of Man Government departments and agencies, local authorities, business groups, and third sector organisations, which was all part of an ongoing key stakeholder engagement programme. Ørsted gave a presentation about the Mooir Vannin proposals at the recent Isle of Man Government conference.

John Galloway, Ørsted Development Director for the Isle of Man, said: “We would like to thank everyone who took the time to take part in the community consultation on the Isle of Man’s first offshore wind farm. The feedback has demonstrated a high level of interest and knowledge about the Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm, which is very encouraging. We have received support from residents who share our enthusiasm for the economic and secure green energy benefits that the wind farm could provide for during its 35-year operational lifetime.

“We would also like to thank members of the public for the questions and concerns raised, and these will all be carefully considered and shared in a detailed Consultation Report. It is important to note the plans we presented for consultation were a maximum design scenario that shows the potential impact of the greatest size, number and widest spread of turbines at the closest edge to the shore. Our proposals will now be reviewed, refined, and adapted ahead of submitting a planning application next year.

“We’re continuing work with Manx Utilities, proposing a link that can provide enough electricity for the Island’s future energy demand utilising the Isle of Man’s first offshore wind farm – Mooir Vannin. We’re also continuing to work with departments across Isle of Man Government on how the full economic benefits of the project can be secured and delivered for the long term, across the whole community.”

The consultation period ran from 15 July to 11 September 2024. Whilst the consultation period has closed, detailed information, including all visualisations of the wind farm from the east coast, can be found at orsted.im/mooirvannin/document-library.

KPMG launches global centre of excellence for island healthcare

Healthcare systems and organisations worldwide regularly turn to KPMG firms for their knowledge and leading insights to navigate challenges to help transform the way these organisations operate, engage their staff and deliver care. The launch of KPMGs’ new global centre of excellence for island healthcare further enhances the firm’s ability to share this expertise, specifically tailored to the unique needs of islandbased healthcare systems.

he newly established centre serves as a central hub where KPMG firms can share experience and learnings in the island-based healthcare internationally. It unites dedicated island-based professionals from the Crown Dependencies, Caribbean, Bermuda, and Mediterranean, focusing on identifying and adapting best practices for islands. Additionally, the centre will conduct research to develop tailored approaches for island healthcare and foster networking opportunities among island healthcare stakeholders.

Through this initiative, stakeholders gain access to KPMG’s extensive global healthcare network, which consists of over 5,000 audit, tax, and advisory professionals with healthcare industry expertise in more than 70 member firms worldwide. This network also includes nearly 200 clinicians with hands-on experience in various healthcare roles, such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, social workers and other allied professions.

The centre will work with governments, regulators, payors, providers, non-government organisations and international development organisations across a wide range of island specific healthcare topics[1], including:

• Healthcare system strengthening and Universal Health Coverage: Ensuring all community members have access to affordable and high-quality healthcare.

• Operational improvement, efficiency and productivity: Enhancing patient care delivery and optimising resource use for greater effectiveness.

• Integrated care models and pathway design: Developing a more coordinated and seamless patient experience across various healthcare services.

• Human resources for healthcare organisations: Addressing staffing needs to effectively meet community healthcare demands.

• Digital health and data: Leveraging technology to

enhance both the convenience and accuracy of patient care.

• Strategy, acquisitions and financing: Ensuring the sustainability of hospitals and health services through strategic planning and financial management.

• Climate health and ESG: Promoting environmentally friendly practices and social responsibility within healthcare systems.

• Leadership, learning and development: Providing training for healthcare leaders to adapt to changes, improve services, and drive ongoing evolution in healthcare quality.

The initiative is already making a significant impact, contributing to the financial sustainability and integrated care delivery in island communities. For instance, in 2021 it helped the Bermuda Hospitals Board achieve $30 million in cost savings and supported several cancer pathway improvements on the island. Additionally, a £20 million savings target has been identified through a three-year financial recovery program for Government’s Health and Community Services. These outcomes have been made possible by applying global strategies from leading healthcare providers, enabling KPMG to offer 'leading practice' guidance in developing and updating local island strategies.

Dr. Edward Fitzgerald, Head of Healthcare and Life Sciences for KPMG Islands Group, comments, “Delivering accessible, affordable, high-quality care can be particularly challenging for island communities throughout the world, given their geographical locations and smaller scale. This situation magnifies wider health challenges, including rising population health needs, the growing complexity and cost of care, and health workforce pressures”.

Russell Kelly, Head of Advisory for KPMG Islands Group and Partner in KPMG in the Crown Dependencies, comments, “This significant investment in our team reaffirms KPMG's commitment to delivering our knowledge and expertise across the healthcare sector, both globally and locally. Establishing this new international hub not only showcases the outstanding work we're already accomplishing, but also helps ensure that our global insights are effectively coordinated, shared and put into action for the benefit of our island communities”.

GOVERNMENT

Chief Minister announces focus on keeping Island safe and secure

The Chief Minister, Alfred Cannan MHK, has said keeping the Island safe and secure is a key priority for the Government over the coming 12 months.

The Chief Minister’s remarks came as he opened the third Isle of Man Government Conference taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Comis Hotel.

Progress or regress

The Chief Minister sought to refocus on the demographic challenge impacting on many western democracies. He said: “The Isle of Man, just like many other developed countries, is a population with a declining birth rate. Our birth rate is simply too low and without significant changes to productivity or without attracting new workers, the cost of delivering health and social care alongside pensions will dominate the public purse for years to come.

“Retaining our young people and developing the right skills on Island is one part of the equation, but there is no question that we also need additional skilled and unskilled resources to maintain and grow our economy.

“The right inward migration policies are necessary if we are to retain the attractiveness of the Island to modern business and indeed modern society.”

The Chief Minister told the audience that good progress was being made, with 1,300 more people in work since September 2021, contributing to the Island’s economy.

Migration and border security

Immigration and border security were also raised

as issues of concern in the Chief Minister’s opening address.

Highlighting that the Isle of Man remained the safest place to live and work in the British Isles, the Chief Minister discouraged complacency, saying that in an ever-changing world, the safety and security of the Island and its people was not something to be taken for granted.

Closer attention to the Island’s immigration processes and policy, along with the need to know more about those coming to the Island in order to help prevent crime, were two areas the Chief Minister said the Government was actively working to strengthen.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the Island’s immigration policy must ensure the right balance of continuing to welcome people who can contribute to the Island’s economy and society, while protecting the Isle of Man’s security.

Fiscal responsibility

Turning to fiscal responsibility, the Chief Minister spoke of the risk to Government’s medium term financial plan due to significant and repeated overspends on health and social care services. He said a turnaround plan for Manx Care was required, with urgent discussions underway.

Public service efficiency and reform would also see a renewed focus, with the Chief Minister announcing a target of at least £10 million in savings and efficiencies to commence in conjunction with next year’s Budget.

Concluding his opening remarks at the Conference, the Chief Minister made this commitment to the Manx people: “Stability, security and safety will be our watchwords. I want you and your families to feel physically and environmentally safe, fiscally and economically safe and to be safe in the knowledge that despite the difficult challenges all around us we continue to make progress, working together, as a strong, stable and proud Island nation.”

Government welcomes pricing announcement from Steam Packet

The decision by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company to extend special offer fares to last minute bookings has been welcomed by the Isle of Man Government.

The decision is an immediate response to a recent public survey by the Steam Packet.

Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson MHK said: “I very much welcome this decision and am greatly encouraged to see the Steam Packet Company responding positively to feedback from customers and the wider community.

“Extending special offers to last minute bookings is fairer and more transparent, providing island residents greater value, flexibility and convenience.”

The cost of short notice, last minute travel was a matter of concern raised in Tynwald by the Chief Minister Alfred Cannan MHK in June. The Chief

Minister went on to set out a commitment to leverage the Government’s ownership of the ferry operator, ensuring pricing was transparent and that it delivered for the Island.

Minister Allinson continued: “There is always a balance to be struck. We must ensure that the Steam Packet remains able to operate without requiring a subsidy from taxpayers. But we must leverage Government’s ownership of this lifeline service, ensuring we maximise the benefits for our economy and community to deliver transparent pricing with fares and freight costs that offer the best value.

“The Government is continuing to work with the Steam Packet board, with further progress updates due later this autumn.”

Enhanced support for businesses to reduce their carbon emissions

The Business Energy Saving Scheme has been relaunched bringing in a number of improvements.

The Scheme renamed the Business Emissions Saving Scheme (BESS), aids businesses seeking to make positive changes through making their operations more energy efficient, reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs.

Taking on board feedback through a business survey and the Climate Change Transformation Team, the key features and improved changes to the BESS include:

• Increased financial assistance available for eligible businesses ranging from £20,000 to £100,000, tiered as follows:

• Up to £50,000 for businesses of all sizes

• Up to £75,000 for businesses which have 10–25 employees

• Up to £100,000 for businesses which have over 25 employees

• Increased grant support to 75% of the cost of energy audit of which will help businesses identify the best approach to reducing emissions

• Support measures extended to include a wider range of energy efficiency projects and those which reduce emissions e.g. incentivise/enable commuting by active travel (e.g. bike storage)

The Scheme is aligned with Government’s Net Zero climate change ambitions, by aiding businesses with tools to reduce their energy usage and lower carbon

emissions, whilst also improving the Island’s environmental sustainability as outlined in the Island Plan.

commented: “The Business Emissions Saving Scheme has been operating for several years under previous guises, supporting a range of business energy efficiency projects on Island. However, it is important that the support offered by the Department continues to adapt and evolve, and following feedback from a business survey and recent increases in energy costs, we have relaunched the Scheme with a number of improvements aimed to help businesses to reduce their carbon footprint.

“By providing this Scheme we are supporting the commitment from Government to reduce carbon emissions by 2050, whilst also encouraging businesses to become more financially sustainable through being more energy efficient, resulting in reduced energy costs.”

The changes, which come into effect from 1 October, include the requirement for businesses to undertake an energy audit before applying for the Scheme to determine the improvements required, with a grant of 75% of the audit costs available. The maximum loan value has also been increased from £20,000 to £100,000 depending on business size, along with a wider range of energy efficiency projects available including charging points and measures which reduce emissions and encourage active travel.

Further information regarding the Scheme as well as eligibility is available at iomdfenterprise.im/bess

Positive engagement on range of issues at Government Conference

Securing the economy, transport connectivity, border security and the delivery of public services were the key themes at the third Isle of Man Government Conference held at the Comis Hotel in Santon on 17-18 September.

An audience totalling almost 600 people attended the two-day event and took the chance to hear from and engage with the Chief Minister, Ministers, senior officers and guest speakers on a broad range of topics.

Setting the scene for the conference in his opening address, Chief Minister Alfred Cannan MHK pointed to the immediate need for Government to focus on the ‘Secure’ element of the Island Plan’s ‘Secure, Vibrant

and Sustainable’ vision. He said: “Stability, security and safety will be the watchwords. I want you and your families to feel physically and environmentally safe, fiscally and economically safe and to be safe in the knowledge that despite the difficult challenges all around us we continue to make progress, working together, as a strong, stable and proud Island nation.”

A revised conference format saw all presentations, workshops and question-and-answer sessions taking place in a single room. The approach enabled all

attendees to focus on specific issues as the event progressed and was introduced in response to feedback from previous conferences held at the Villa Marina in Douglas.

In addition to the key themes, the conference included sessions on workforce and skills, the local economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, tourism and the Island’s Biosphere status.

Reflecting on the event, the Chief Minister said: “The conference is now in its third year and is invaluable in helping to gain a greater understanding of the issues on people’s minds and to stimulate

engagement in a positive way.

“The event does, of course, provide an important platform for government to make announcements and provide context around the challenges and opportunities facing our community.

“However, talking to people about their priorities is where the value really lies and I have already committed to holding another set of roadshows next spring, with the Council of Ministers engaging at events Island-wide.”

Visit Isle of Man launches new destination marketing campaign

Visit Isle of Man has launched a new destination marketing campaign, ‘Extraordinary Isle’, aimed at promoting the Isle of Man as a quality, year-round visitor destination focusing on authenticity and aspirational intent.

AThe ‘Extraordinary Isle’ campaign is part of Visit Isle of Man’s broader efforts to support the local visitor economy by promoting sustainable tourism and driving visitor growth, as outlined in its ten-year strategy, ‘Our Island, Our Future’.

‘Extraordinary Isle’ and its supporting content and campaigns will depict life in the Isle of Man and showcase the stories and folklore that make the Island such a special and unique place to live, work, play and visit. From its UNESCO Biosphere status to its landscape and people that have shaped the Isle of Man into what it is today, ‘Extraordinary Isle’ aims to provide inspirational content which resonates and differentiates the Island from other destinations, unearthing its distinct and unique Manx identity, heritage, culture, language and community.

Tapping into current industry and consumer trends, ‘Extraordinary Isle’ will also showcase the seasonal tourism product offerings and experiences that are available in the Isle of Man, promoting the depth, breadth and diversity of its offering, all within easy access from the UK and Ireland.

Chief Minister leads delegation to Labour Party Conference

The Chief Minister, Alfred Cannan MHK, and Deputy Chief Minister, Jane Poole-Wilson MHK, attended the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool last month.

The Chief Minister said: “Each year we attend the party conferences of the party in power, and the official opposition. This year, with a new government, the position is somewhat different. We will be working to build on existing relationships, and making new connections, to put across the Island’s message - that we are ready to work with the new government to deliver growth for the whole of the British family.

“It is also an excellent opportunity to meet with members of the party more broadly and especially with our neighbours in the North West. With such a large intake of new MPs, and a new government, it is especially interesting to form new relationships with our near neighbours.”

Melanie Allen, Director of Marketing and Communications for Visit Isle of Man, commented: “The world-wide destination marketplace is a crowded landscape, particularly with many well-established destinations now looking to shine a light on authentic and experiential tourism. Historically, the Isle of Man, in its own right, is a distinctive and unique destination, but there is a need to cut through the noise and be visible and relevant to both existing and new target audiences.

“To continue to build further on the traction gained from Visit Isle of Man’s ‘The Extraordinary Story’ campaign, established in 2018, and to be at the forefront of emerging aspirational and experiential tourism trends, the new ‘Extraordinary Isle’ campaign will be strategically positioned to reach our target audiences and drive aspirational intent, changing perceptions and developing long-term relationships with visitors.

“With a fully integrated local marketing, creative and production team, the campaign will be evergreen, with fresh content being rolled out regularly. Our recent video with Sir Mark Cavendish KBE, which received fantastic traction across our social channels last month, acted as a teaser to ‘Extraordinary Isle’ and aimed to demonstrate a strong foundation of the campaign, which is our people and our community. Our residents and businesses are our biggest assets and so, alongside our seasonal marketing activity, we will also be sharing content of our local

ambassadors to inspire visitors to experience the magic of the Isle of Man.’

The first of the ‘Extraordinary Isle’ seasonal campaign videos launched yesterday and focuses on encouraging visitors to experience the Island’s outdoor and adventure offering this autumn. The winter campaign will focus on the Island’s businesses and food and drink offering, providing visitors with an introduction to some of the Island's 'Business Champions', and then spring will showcase the Manx calendar and the Island’s unique and vibrant culture, heritage, arts and music scene.

Marketing activity for ‘Extraordinary Isle’ will be predominantly digital-focused, with elements of PR, influencer and traditional marketing channels utilised to help reach as many of Visit Isle of Man’s target audiences as possible. A toolkit will also be shared with local industry and businesses in the coming weeks, to ensure the brand and its supporting assets can be utilised and amplified in collaboration with Visit Isle of Man’s stakeholders.

Collaboration with the local community is a core pillar of the ‘Extraordinary Isle’ campaign and Visit Isle of Man invites all local businesses and residents to explore and engage with the campaign as it evolves, to help inspire more visitors to enjoy the ‘Extraordinary Isle’. Content will be available to share across Visit Isle of Man’s social media channels.

Isle of Man security strategy unveiled

A new strategy aimed at securing the Isle of Man’s borders from criminal exploitation has been unveiled by the Isle of Man Government.

The action follows growing concerns about drugs, weapons, modern slavery, and other criminal activities being facilitated through the island’s ports.

The ‘Securing Our Island’ strategy, sets out a range of proactive measures that will make it harder for criminals to exploit the island’s position within the Common Travel Area.

In recent years, organised crime, including drug trafficking, has become an increasing threat, with street prices for some illegal substances now three times higher than the UK, making it an attractive target.

In his annual report the Chief Constable confirmed that more than 3.25kg of heroin, 1.75kg of cocaine and 19kg of cannabis were seized by police between 2023/24, alongside £65,000 in cash, as part of three major operations that targeted organised crime groups (OCGs) and saw 21 arrests.

Jane Poole-Wilson MHK, Minister for Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, said: “We will not allow criminals to exploit our open borders to profit from misery and violence and this important strategy

outlines clear steps to deter criminals, detect threats and protect our residents.”

The strategy is built on four key policy principles:

• Securing borders with advanced technology;

• Ensuring efficient and fair entry processes;

• Maintaining compliance with international obligations, and

• Building resilience through regular updates based on emerging threats.

Underpinning these principles are the three strategic aims of Prevent, Protect, and Pursue. These aim to detect criminals before they enter the island, safeguard residents from harm, and bring offenders to justice.

To support this, the Isle of Man Government is working towards introducing technologies such as facial recognition (FR) and automated number plate recognition (ANPR) at air and sea ports. Law enforcement officers will also be present for all major arrivals to carry out proactive and intelligence led security checks.

A significant amount of work has already been done towards the strategy. A new dog team is now in operation, screening arrivals and departures at the sea terminal and airport, alongside dedicated Customs officials. The Department of Infrastructure Port security team will move to the Constabulary in November, further enhancing the ability of law enforcement officials to identify criminals and the movement of illicit goods.

Minister Poole-Wilson added: “This Government remains committed to working with UK law enforcement and other partners to strengthen our island’s defences and ensure it remains a safe place to live and work.”

Chief Minister delivers biosphere message

The Chief Minister Alfred Cannan MHK has taken part in the 2024 Virtual Island Summit, speaking about the Isle of Man’s UNESCO biosphere status and the Government’s commitment to sustainability.

The Summit, which runs over five days, seeks to connect islanders around the world and address the unique challenges facing island communities.

The Chief Minister joined a number of politicians, activists, business leaders and academics taking part in the event. There were speakers from the United Nations, the Bezos Earth Fund and COP29, as well as representatives from islands close to home such as the Isles of Scilly to those further afield including Madagascar and Antigua and Barbuda.

Delivering his remarks, the Chief Minister talked about the Island’s unique and distinct identity, outstanding natural environment, unique history and culture, and a strong sense of community. He also spoke of the Island’s stability and safety.

The Island’s biosphere status - awarded by UNESCO in 2016 - was the main theme of the discussion, along with efforts being made to improve the Isle of Man’s sustainability. The Chief Minister covered a number of positive initiatives, such as the Island’s 10 marine nature reserves; blue carbon capture and peat restoration projects; the Government’s climate change strategy; sustainable finance; and the Government’s renewable energy and decarbonisation ambitions.

The Chief Minister said: “We are not alone in the challenges we face. The Summit enables us to share our experiences and to learn from other island nations around the globe, exploring how we can tackle common issues and develop our opportunities.”

Clare Barber MHK, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture, also took part in the Summit and spoke about food production through sustainable agriculture.

“The Group remains highly cash generative, supporting the payment of two special dividends during the past four years alongside twice-yearly ordinary dividends. Transformed from a local stock and bond market, today TISE is an established operator of public markets with an enlarged portfolio of financial markets and securities services for both public and private companies that positions the Group well for long-term growth.”

TISE’s Isle of Man-based Members, which facilitate listings on the exchange, are Boston Sponsor Services Limited, Cains Listing Services Limited, Equiom (Isle of Man) Ltd, FIM Capital Ltd and IQ EQ (Isle of Man) Limited.

There were 444 newly listed securities on TISE during the first half of 2024, which represented an 18.4% increase year on year. Within its equity market, TISE has consolidated its position as the second largest venue for listed UK Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). With four new UK REITs listed on TISE during the first half of 2024, double the number listed during the equivalent period in 2023, the total number of UK REITs listed on TISE reached 45 at 30 June 2024.

During the period, TISE continued to deliver its private markets service to the first client company, Blue Diamond Limited, as well as developing a pipeline of other prospective clients. The number of private companies in the UK that have more than 100 employees has grown by 3,096 over the last decade to nearly 19,150, while the number of listed companies has reduced by 271 during the same period. TISE Private Markets gives unlisted companies a more efficient way to trade their shares by providing access to a set of integrated electronic auction trading, settlement and registry management solutions.

“The progress we have made in executing our strategy has been demonstrated by the sustained growth we have achieved through changing market conditions,” said Cees Vermaas, CEO of the Group.

“We continue to deliver strong financial and operational performance both during the subdued market conditions of recent years and during the first half of 2024, with the return of a brighter economic picture. Our investment into an increasingly scalable and diversified business model means that we are in an excellent position to make the most of the opportunities available to us across both public and private markets.”

ISLE OF MAN SHIP REGISTRY MARKS 40TH ANNIVERSARY WITH CELEBRATORY LONDON EVENT

CELEBRATION MARKED WHILE PROMISING TO PROMOTE DECARBONISATION AND PIONEER

SEAFARERS’ WELFARE

The Isle of Man Ship Registry (IOMSR) has marked its 40th anniversary with an event in London as the Douglas based registry seeks to cement its position as one of the world’s most progressive flag states.

The celebrations, which were attended by a host of key figures across the maritime industry, took place at the historic Trinity House as a way to thank the IOMSR’s clients and partners and present its vision for the future.

IOMSR director Cameron Mitchell said of the event, which took place on September 12 and was sponsored by Cains, MHG Insurance and Appleby: ”This year represents a significant milestone for the registry. As we look back on 40 years of success, we were keen to express our sincere gratitude to our dedicated team, valued clients and the wider maritime community. They have all played an instrumental role in our remarkable journey and their trust, loyalty and collaboration have been key to our achievements.

‘‘
WE WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE THE GLOBAL MARITIME COMMUNITY WITH DISTINCTION, WHILE LEADING THE WAY TO CREATE A GREEN AND MORE EFFICIENT MARITIME INDUSTRY.

"Since our inception in 1984, the IOMSR has grown into one of the world’s leading maritime registries, consistently recognised for our high standards of safety, innovation and commitment to environmental sustainability.”

Mr Mitchell went on to explain how vital it is that the registry continues to lead by example as a Category 1 member of the Red Ensign Group, representing more than a third of tonnage under the Red Ensign and being synonymous with the highest standards of safety, engineering and navigation in the global maritime industry.

He added: "Over the past four decades, the IOMSR has evolved to meet the changing needs of the global shipping industry. Today, we are known for offering unparalleled service, a reputation for regulatory excellence and a proactive approach to the latest maritime challenges. They crucially include seafarers'

welfare, decarbonisation and digitalisation, which are all key pillars of future industry growth.

“First and foremost, we need to care for our seafarer’s mental health, safety and well-being by implementing robust EDI frameworks. We are also proud to have launched our seafarer welfare app, which ensures seafarer and vessel safety.

“Additionally, successfully meeting IMO 2050 GHG targets will require greater data transparency and collaboration across maritime. Flag states are required to take positive actions, such as by having the forethought to offer reduced registration fees for those ships deploying green technology and using alternative fuels.”

Guests on the night included senior figures from organisations including Maritime UK, WISTA UK, the Isle of Man's Department for Enterprise, the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network, Nautilus International and BP.

Speaking at the event, Diane Kelsey MLC, who holds the role of Political Member for Business Isle of Man under the Department for Enterprise, said: “We are leaders in promoting sustainable practices in the maritime industry. I would like to thank the dedicated team at IOMSR for making this ethos of continuous adaptation at the heart of everything they do and for consistently positioning the island as a quality flag of choice, leading the way in sustainable and efficient maritime practices.

“As we look to the future, the IOMSR remains committed to upholding these values for the next 40 years and continuing to serve the global maritime community with distinction, while leading the way to create a green and more efficient maritime industry. We look forward to the next 40 years of delivering excellence together.”

Mr Mitchell supported this sentiment and went on to highlight that, while the past 40 years have seen huge developments across the Isle of Man’s maritime industry, the IOMSR must now firmly set its sights on future success.

He said: “The past 40 years has seen the IOMSR diversify and grow. This wouldn't have been possible without the support of the community who make up the island’s maritime sector. We are excited to continue building on this legacy, driving innovation and maintaining our position as a world-class registry in the years to come. Here’s to the next 40 years and beyond.”

The IOMSR is one of the world’s leading flag states and is ranked 18 in the world by Clarkson’s with 313 ships and around 12M GT under its flag. The registry has held top spot on the Paris MoU Port State Control whitelist and is on the whitelist in the Tokyo MoU rankings. The registry is headquartered in Douglas, Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown dependency.

LOCAL BUSINESS BACKS GOVERNMENT EMISSIONS SAVING SUPPORT SCHEME

THE RELAUNCH OF THE ISLE OF MAN GOVERNMENT’S BUSINESS EMISSIONS SAVING SCHEME IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES TO ACCELERATE ENERGY EFFICIENCY PLANS AND TO SEEK SUPPORT IN CUTTING BOTH FUTURE COSTS AND EMISSIONS FROM THE WORKPLACE, ACCORDING TO LOCAL STANDARDS AND QUALITY ASSURANCE COMPANY ISO QA.

As well as offering financial assistance for specific emission-saving projects, the scheme is offering eligible businesses grants of up to 75% for the cost of an energy audit, a vital first step in assessing where the most valuable improvements can be made.

ISO QA has been offering such audits for many years and Managing Director Kevin Burnell says the Government support will enable businesses to plan effectively and evidence the potential return on energy improvement projects.

“An energy audit is the cornerstone of an energy efficiency plan,” said Kevin. “It looks at all the different elements that contribute to energy consumptionlighting, heating, insulation and alternative energy –and provides the data needed to identify both what improvements can be made and the priority of those in order of importance.

“Our own energy audits are carried out by

independent assessors who take into account all the individual factors that might be impacting thermal and energy efficiencies in the workplace.

“They also look at external factors such as weather and solar orientation, and assess usage patterns and behaviours which may be contributing to unnecessary energy use and costs.

“With sustainability and carbon footprint reduction very much at the forefront of stakeholders’ minds – and cost-effectiveness a basic requirement of any business – the Government’s relaunched scheme is an ideal opportunity for local companies to seize the moment and take action on energy efficiency.”

We support initiatives that foster growth and connection, both locally and globally. Through event sponsorships, cultural backing and international promotion, Atla aims to make a lasting impact.

Innovative Communication: Introducing The Deep Dive

At the start of this year, we embarked on creating a media studio in our office. Aimed at our clients and intermediaries, our video podcast draws inspiration from the success of the M Word Podcast, led by our CEO, Martin Hall and Pensions Manager, Matt Looker. As part of this initiative, we rebranded the Frontline podcast to better align with the Atla Group brand. We are proud to introduce ‘The Deep Dive powered by Atla.im.’

Community Focus: Supporting Our Island

Our commitment to the Isle of Man community is reflected in our support for sport, culture, and charity.

One standout event in our 2024 calendar is supporting Expedition Limitless, this year we were proxy sponsor for Matt Gooding, a long-standing member of our team who has worked with us for over 27 years.

Matt embarked on a kayak journey down the Yukon River, exemplifying not just personal endurance but our company’s long-term commitment to exploration and pushing boundaries.

We are proud to sponsor local athletes, including TT rider Conor Cummins and the Cringle brothers, as well as events like the IOM Squash Championships and raised funds for the IOM Golf Union through our annual Pro*/Am golf day.

INVESTING IN THEIR FUTURE IN LAW

AS A LEADING ISLE OF MAN LAW FIRM, PROFE SSIONALLY RECOGNISED BY THEIR PEERS AS ONE OF THE BEST PRACTICES IN THE BRITISH ISLES, DQ ADVOCATES PRIDES ITSELF ON BEING A TRULY DIVERSE TEAM. AND IT IS BY ADOPTING A FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO THE WORKPLACE WHICH ENSURES THE DOUGLAS-BASED PRACTICE ATTRACTS AND RETAINS SUCH A TALENTED AND DEDICATED WORKFORCE, CONTRIBUTING TO THE OVERALL GROWTH AND SUCCESS OF THE COMPANY ACROSS ALL ITS KEY BUSINESS AREAS. ISLE OF MAN PORTFOLIO SPOKE TO TWO OF THE TEAM ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES AND HOW SUCH FOUNDATION IS ALLOWING THEM TO THRIVE PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY.

DAVID COWIN – TRAINEE PARALEGAL

Can you tell us a little bit more about the role and your time at the company to date?

On October 3rd I had been at DQ for exactly two years and the experience has been absolutely brilliant. I joined DQ at 18 straight out of sixth form, with the idea that I would work part-time as a trainee paralegal whilst sitting my law degree remotely with the University of Essex - a de facto legal apprenticeship of which I really didn’t know what to expect. This was my first real experience in the legal sector as well as my first ‘proper’ job, but DQ has been amazing at showing me the ropes and teaching me how to practically apply the theory I’ve been learning at university, as well as how Manx Law differs to English Law. It didn’t take long for the imposter syndrome to wear off and I feel like a true member of Team DQ now!

What does your current role entail?

Due to the way I decided to enter the legal sector, my role is quite unconventional. During a usual five day working week I spend two of these days (plus evenings as required) studying for my law degree and the other three working at DQ where the scope of my role is extremely wide; as a whole firm asset, I’ll assist wherever I’m needed with whatever work needs doing. Typically this will involve legal research or document drafting, but can include anything from calling clients to sitting in on court cases depending on what the matter requires. In my opinion, this arrangement is beneficial to everyone involved. I gain experience in all areas of law we practice in and can enhance my knowledge ready for when I take the next step towards qualifying as an advocate. At the same time, our advocates can pass work to me, allowing them to focus on more specialised tasks, which inevitably creates advantages which are passed on to the client.

What qualifications/training do you need for your job?

For my role specifically, it would be adequate Alevels to enrol in university and an excellent work ethic. This position is far from standardised though, so for anyone looking to go down this route I’d recommend reaching out to some law firms and seeing what they would expect. I’m aware, however, that the Isle of Man Law Society is exploring the possibility of introducing a formal legal apprenticeship scheme, so this may well change and become standardised in future.

What support has the firm given you on your journey?

DQ has been so supportive and understanding, ensuring that work doesn’t get in the way of university and that I have enough time to complete any assessments to a high standard. Moreover, the team at DQ has been extremely helpful, always lending a hand or answering any questions, both in regard to my work and Isle of Man law or relating to my studies. Some of our advocates have been the best mentors I could have wished for and, especially considering the stage at which I entered the sector, I would never have progressed without them.

What do you feel are the main strengths of DQ?

I’d say DQ’s main strengths are probably how modern and forward thinking the firm is. It’s never afraid to try new things and be flexible with how work gets done, and the creation of my role is probably the perfect example of that!

What’s your favourite thing about working at DQ?

My favourite thing about DQ is definitely the flexibility. The firm’s very understanding of the fact that life exists outside of work and want staff to live to the fullest. Personally, this is hugely significant as the directors recognise that, although working, I’m still ultimately a university student. They want me to develop as a person, so they’re more than happy for me to swap the days I work some weeks to allow me to make the most of other opportunities. As part of this, DQ has provided me with

a month's leave designed to encourage me to explore what the world has to offer. Whether I spend it travelling, as I did in summer 2023 or volunteering as I did this year, they recognise it’s these life experiences that truly shape people and for that I’m grateful.

What qualities make a great leader?

Above all, a good leader is someone who is truly a part of the team they’re leading. It’s one thing to effectively delegate work and make decisions, but that ‘boots-on-the-ground’ impact is the difference between a manager and a leader. While a manager will know the strengths and weaknesses of their team members and how they work, a leader should engage with their team, get to properly know them and lead by example. They should earn the respect of their team through their conduct and always know what’s going on, and their team should be able to rely on them when obstacles are encountered, whether that be for a solution, for guidance or just for encouragement. Crucially, they should be able to inspire a team and instil confidence in its members making the team truly want them as their leader, rather than them listening solely because of their position. I'm exposed to a variety of great leaders at DQ.

What’s the best business lesson you’ve learned so far?

I think this applies to most areas of life rather than just business, but it would be that the team is everything. I don’t think any member of DQ could do their work alone; it’s far from uncommon to see advocates turning to one another for advice, and the support staff, specifically the personal assistants, are involved in every matter, completing the necessary background work and keeping the firm functioning. From this you see the massive benefits of having good team relationships and how well a properly run and inspired team can operate. The last two years have truly emphasised to me the importance of keeping a team happy and motivated.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into the same sector?

Get out there, talk to people, put the work in and make things happen. Work experience and previous legal knowledge always helps but ultimately, with the right work ethic and the willingness to put enough effort in, you can make almost anything out of your career. I would absolutely recommend DQ’s Insight Days, held each spring, and their summer internship scheme to get a proper look at the legal sector on the Isle of Man, make some contacts within the industry and open up further opportunities – that’s how I got my foot in the door!

KAREN DALY, DQ PARALEGAL

Can you tell us a little bit more about the role and your time at the company to date?

I have been with DQ for a year and am now progressing into my role as Trainee Advocate. The support I have received from the team has been invaluable in helping me prepare for this next important step. My position as Trainee Advocate requires me to commence a two year period of Articles, in which I must pass five exams to fully qualify as a Manx Advocate.

What does your current role entail?

I assist with client matters daily – a wide range of private client, corporate law and litigation matters which ensures every day is different, which is something I enjoy.

What qualifications/training do you need for your job?

The entry requirements are a qualifying law degree with a minimum of second-class honours, or a nonlaw degree (minimum second-class honours) followed by the Graduate Diploma in Law.

I would also recommend gaining experience through placements or internships with various law firms.

What support has the firm given you on your journey?

DQ has been extremely supportive in providing me with the flexibility to work around my young family, which is something I am very grateful for and has made the process of working to become an advocate so much easier. They promote a work-life balance, which I believe is important.

What do you feel are the main strengths of DQ?

DQ is a modern, forward thinking law firm.

What’s your favourite thing about working at DQ?

I’m very lucky to work with people who are kind, helpful and happy to give their time.

What qualities make a great leader?

I believe a good leader is someone who has a vision to drive things forward, shows respect, listens and communicates well, demonstrates gratitude and allows for flexibility.

What’s the best business lesson you’ve learned so far? Company culture is extremely important.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into the same sector?

Try and secure work experience in as many law firms as possible. It gives you a great idea of what working in a law firm is like but also allows you to see which workplace is the right fit for you.

AT SURE BUSINESS, WE HAVE A TEAM OF EXPERTS WHO ARE WELL VERSED IN CYBERSECURITY AND KNOW HOW TO SPOT AND DEAL WITH THE THREAT OF A CYBER ATTACK. CYBER CRIMINALS ARE PARTICULARLY SAVVY WHEN IT COMES TO SCAMMING YOU THROUGH EMAIL, WHICH MAKES UP MORE THAN HALF OF ALL SUCCESSFUL RANSOMWARE ATTACKS. OUR ENTERPRISE PRODUCT MANAGER, DAVID SALISBURY, EXPLAINS HOW YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS CAN PROTECT YOURSELVES AGAINST SCAM EMAILS, AND WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO BE VIGILANT.

DAVID SALISBURY

ENTERPRISE PRODUCT MANAGER

SUE BUSINESS

WE RECOMMEND MAKING SURE THAT YOU HAVE THE BEST MULTILAYERED EMAIL FILTERING IN PLACE, THROUGH TRUSTED NAMES SUCH AS MIMECAST, WHICH CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH THAT SUIT OF ARMOUR AROUND YOUR DATA

Scams and phishing emails are much more subtle and sophisticated than they once were. Many of us will have received one of the old classic scam attempts, from a foreign prince asking you for help to collect his father’s gold.

Today, victims will often be targeted by being asked to open an attachment or click on a website link, usually with a sense of urgency, with the goal of exploiting targets for money, compromising their system or stealing information.

To defend yourself against phishing emails and scams, we recommend making sure that you have the best multilayered email filtering in place, through trusted names such as email scanning software Mimecast, which can provide you with that suit of armour around your data. This combined with continuous staff training will help you and your team spot a phishing email both at work and at home.

Anyone with an email address, whether it is a personal or business account, are at risk of being targeted. A recent survey of 3,000 email scam victims, conducted by Take Five to Stop Fraud, found that people are most likely to succumb to phishing emails on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. Scam emails are hard enough to spot to the untrained eye, but when someone is busy with day-to-day life, it can be harder to notice that carefully crafted phishing email.

However, there are several red flags you can look out for to avoid falling victim:

• Threatening or urgent language: Scammers know that people are more likely to make rash decisions when they are under pressure. This can involve asking you to update your banking details by a particular deadline or dangling a tempting offer or exclusive deal that expires very soon.

• Request for money or personal information: Whether it is from a business or an individual, receiving a request for money over email should always be treated with caution. Cybercriminals may pose as your boss, in what is called CEO Fraud, requesting credit card details or an exchange of money, as they know the pressure of an authority figure could encourage you to act quickly.

On the other hand, businesses will almost never request money via email, and data protection laws prohibit businesses from asking for personal

information on an email. Often, these requests will ask you to ignore the usual authorisation processes and will have unusual bank details you likely will not recognise.

• Spelling or grammar errors: This is a dead giveaway that an email is being sent from a potentially unsafe source. Often, these mistakes are intentional, as scammers are looking for people who will not notice these mistakes and are therefore easier to target.

• Unfamiliar senders or recipients: If you receive a suspicious email, follow the ‘last slash rule’: Whatever comes before the first slash in a web address is what matters, as it is the only part of a domain that a scammer can’t change. If there are dashes in this part, or it doesn’t match the official domain of the business contacting you, it is probably a scam.

For example, a legitimate link would look like: https://www.sure.com/

An illegitimate link could look like:

https://www.sure.ca/ap/signin?_encoding=UTF8

• Asking you to click on a link: This is relevant to all of the above but is important to mention on its own. Even without seeing any of the red flags, a request to click on an email from a sender you don’t recognise, or are not familiar with, should be approached with caution. Clicking on an unsafe link may redirect you to a fraudulent website, track your location, or install unsafe malware to your device.

We, at Sure Business, can provide industry leading email protection and user awareness services for customers, giving you all the protection you need. Find out more about how we can help secure your business on our products and services page on our website: business.sure.com

MEDIA TRAINING: WHY IT’S ESSENTIAL IN 2024

Navigating a fast-paced media landscape is arguably more of a challenge than ever before so the importance of engaging with the media and delivering your messages successfully and professionally is clear.

That is why the Island’s longest-established full-service agency, Isle of Man Advertising & PR, runs a number of bespoke media training courses, both face-to-face and online, for a variety of organisations to ensure they make the most of their media opportunities.

Whether answering tough and uncomfortable questions, anticipating and dealing with a potential issue in advance, or simply becoming comfortable enough to confidently convey your or your company’s messages, the training is designed to help participants understand the media landscape on and off Island, learn what content is newsworthy and avoid any common pitfalls.

Led by Isle of Man Advertising’s Head of Media, James Davis, a range of courses are offered, tailored to a firm or individual’s needs, comprising practical insights and hands-on exercises, immersive scenarios which simulate various media situations, allowing participants to refine their skills in a safe environment, along with ongoing support and feedback to help them continually improve and stay prepared for any media challenge.

“If you ask most people, only a few would genuinely admit to feeling totally comfortable when a microphone or a camera is thrust in front of them.

“Yet the media should be embraced and, in most cases, seen as an opportunity to tell your story, establish credibility and project confidence to an audience,’ explained James.

“The importance and value of good quality communications, whether via the mainstream media, a blog or a plethora of social media channels cannot be underestimated and, while the range of

‘‘
PEOPLE APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE BEST WHEN THEY TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE AND START TO RELAX AND ALSO HAVE FUN ALONG THE WAY

media platforms have reformed the way many of us communicate, the principles remain and content is key.

“Our media training is designed to be as dynamic as possible and will help anyone who is public-facing, from those tasked solely with communicating via the media to those relevant to a particular area, imparting their knowledge and expertise on a panel session, webinar, forum or other in-person or recorded event.

“It really is all about being comfortable. That is the starting point, identifying individual needs, knowing exactly where you stand before moving onto the unexpected scenarios to even talking about body language and vocal tone.

“People apply their knowledge best when they take an active role and start to relax and also have fun along the way.”

From honing messages and mastering interview techniques to managing crisis communications and understanding media dynamics, the courses cover all aspects essential to effective media and audience engagement.

Managing Director, Helen Summerscales, added: “Our experienced team of professionals work with a diverse range of clients and oversee a broad portfolio of professional services, combining strategic insight with creativity, innovation and practical advice.

“The media training offering forms part of that and, in a fast-moving public relations worldparticularly in a small Island community where reputation is everything - prepares individuals for real life scenarios and equips them with the tools to navigate media enquiries and interviews confidently, professionally and make a lasting, positive impression!”

THE POWER OF WHY IN BRANDING

ASHGROVE MARKETING’S TERRY VAN RHYN EXPLAINS HOW APPLYING TAIICHI OHNO’S

‘5 WHYS’ TECHNIQUE CAN HELP YOU UNCOVER YOUR BRAND’S UNIQUE VOICE.

I have always loathed the prevalence of meaningless power words like “innovative”, “cutting-edge”, “synergy”, and “experience” in advertising messages. It is far more rewarding to ask what makes your product or service innovative and why your customer/client should care.

In our fast-paced world of advertising and branding, trends shift at lightning speed. Competition is fierce and creating a brand that stands out requires more than just a catchy slogan or a sleek logo.

True differentiation comes from the core - the heart of what your brand is and what it represents. This is where the wisdom of Taiichi Ohno’s “5 Whys” comes into play.

Originally developed as part of Toyota’s lean manufacturing system, this problem-solving technique is an invaluable tool when it comes to uncovering the authentic essence of your brand.

WHY ASK WHY?

Too often, businesses stop at the surface when it comes to defining their brand. They settle for vague statements like “We make quality products” or “We offer great customer service.” While those things may be true, they are hardly unique.

The magic happens when you dig deeper - when you peel back the layers and start to get at the core reason why your brand exists.

Ohno’s 5 Whys method was all about uncovering the root cause of problems in manufacturing by repeatedly asking why. But it’s just as effective in the world of marketing where it forces you to go beyond the obvious answers and explore the deeper motivations and values that make your brand truly unique.

GOING DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE OF ‘WHY’

Let’s say you’re developing a positioning statement for a new eco-friendly skincare line.

1 - Why do we make eco-friendly skincare products?

Because we believe in offering a sustainable alternative to traditional skincare.

2 - Why do we believe in sustainability?

Because we want to reduce harm to the environment and promote health-conscious living.

3 - Why do we care about reducing harm to the environment?

Because we feel a responsibility to leave the planet in a better state for future generations.

4 - Why do we feel responsible for future generations?

Because we believe that businesses have a moral obligation to drive positive change in the world.

5 - Why do we believe businesses should drive change?

Because we want to be a part of the solution, not the problem, by creating products that align with our values of integrity, care, and responsibility.

By going through this process, you look far beyond simplistic and vague brand positioning statements like, “We make sustainable skincare.” Instead, you’ve uncovered a powerful, value-driven message that “We’re here to make a meaningful impact by providing skincare that cares for both people and the planet, driven by our belief that businesses must lead the way toward a better future.”

This is the kind of messaging that sticks. It’s emotional, it’s intentional, and it speaks to the deeper motivations of both your company and your audience. You’ve found your true differentiation - the thing that sets your brand apart from the dozens of other ecofriendly skincare brands on the market.

WHY ‘5 WHYS’ IS ESSENTIAL FOR BRAND DIFFERENTIATION

Authenticity Resonates

Today’s consumers are smarter than ever. They can smell BS a mile away. By asking “why” five times, you cut through the fluff and get to the heart of what your brand truly stands for. And that authenticity will resonate in a noisy and cluttered marketplace.

Alignment with Values

The 5 Whys process helps ensure that your brand’s positioning is aligned with your core values. It’s not just about what you sell, but why you sell it. That deeper alignment creates a more compelling story, and one that consumers can connect with on an emotional level.

Clarity and Focus

A lot of brands struggle with trying to be everything to everyone. Asking "why" helps narrow your focus, giving you a clearer understanding of what makes you different and why it matters. It’s like chiselling away at a block of marble to reveal the sculpture within.

Consistency in Messaging

Once you’ve uncovered your brand’s deeper purpose, it becomes easier to craft consistent messaging across all your marketing efforts. Every touchpoint - from social media posts to ad campaigns - can now reinforce your brand’s core “why.”

Innovation and Evolution

This process isn’t a one-time exercise. Just as in Toyota’s production system, the 5 Whys can be applied repeatedly as your brand evolves. As consumer needs shift, you can revisit your core “whys” to ensure that your brand remains relevant and differentiated in a changing landscape.

Taiichi Ohno (1912 - 1990) was a leader in industrial engineering and is well known as the creator of the Toyota Production System, which in turn inspired the Lean theory and stemmed a wide range of Quality Improvement processes.

Taiichi Ohno effectively inspired the Lean concept and leadership method. His leadership method involved mentoring people and asking them challenging questions in order to encourage them to solve and improve processes themselves. This approach is called ‘Ohno’s method’, which he started to develop in 1945 and honed it and refined in later years.

Ohno’s work over the years has been such huge inspiration to so many people and has enabled companies and organisations to streamline their process and provide better value to their customers. By paving the way for improvement in manufacturing, and developing the concepts behind the Lean system, his thinking has also opened up improvement opportunities and thinking for Quality work in healthcare.

BY GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS, YOU LOOK FAR BEYOND SIMPLISTIC AND VAGUE BRAND POSITIONING STATEMENTS AND IT SPEAKS TO THE DEEPER MOTIVATIONS OF BOTH YOUR COMPANY AND YOUR AUDIENCE

Dive Deep, Stand Out

In a world where it’s easy to get lost in the crowd, brands that have the courage to dig deep into their "why" are the ones that truly stand out. The 5 Whys isn’t just a tool for troubleshooting - it’s a path to uncovering the unique essence of your brand. By going down those rabbit holes and pushing beyond the surface-level answers, you’ll not only discover what makes your brand different, but also what makes it meaningful.

So, next time you’re crafting your brand’s positioning statement, remember to ask why - five times. The answers might just surprise you.
