EN SITIO UMÉCUARO, MICHOACÁN, MÉXICO 10 al 24 de noviembre de 2018

La realización de Proyecto en Sitio tiene la finalidad de crear en la localidad de Umécuaro un foro de expresión alternativo, dirigido principalmente hacia una disciplina poco conocida y explorada en México como es el LAND ART, disciplina donde se mantiene en todo momento un contacto directo con la naturaleza, no solo desde el punto de vista del creador, que interviene y trabaja de una forma total con el entorno, sino también del espectador que aprende y adquiere otra manera de apreciar el paisaje. En síntesis, el proyecto consiste en realizar una serie de intervenciones artísticas directas en el sitio, dichas intervenciones abarcan disciplinas tan variadas como: instalación, escultura, pintura, fotografía, etc. Esta serie de intervenciones se realizaron por distintos artistas provenientes de la misma localidad, tanto como invitados desde un nivel estatal, nacional e internacional; este proyecto se desarrolló a través de una residencia artística con sede en La Coyotera Taller-Estudio ubicado en Umécuaro por un periodo de 14 días dentro del año en curso.

Uno de los tantos objetivos es dar a conocer a los asistentes y/o espectadores este tipo de disciplina o manifestación artística llamada Land art o intervención de paisaje. Como residentes de la localidad de Umécuaro vemos la importancia de crear un poco de conciencia

y sensibilidad a este tipo de entorno natural y de mostrar también otra forma de disfrute y contemplación de la naturaleza. También somos conscientes y no olvidamos que nacemos con sentidos básicos primitivos y que por causas diversas éstos permanecen semidormidos en muchos de nosotros, y en varias ocasiones solo basta con el retorno a la naturaleza o al verdadero contacto con ella para darnos cuenta que siguen ahí; esperamos este proyecto trastoque algunos de esos sentidos en la mayoría de los espectadores. Por otro lado, este proyecto también pretende formar nexos con la comunidad artística y académica o con ciertas áreas interesadas en él, tanto a nivel estatal, nacional e internacional, asimismo se busca una participación directa o indirecta con estudiantes afines a cualquier disciplina artística, por esta causa Proyecto en Sitio se reforzará y complementará con una serie de charlas y conferencias por parte de los artistas participantes, éstas se realizarán en distintos foros. Esperamos lograr la concreción de este proyecto para hacerlo de forma continua, con una emisión cada año y conservando las características generales y que a la vez tenga crecimiento complementario.

Este proyecto pretende formar nexos con la comunidad artística y académica, tanto a nivel estatal, nacional e internacional.

Asimismo se busca una participación directa o indirecta con estudiantes afines a cualquier disciplina artística.

Proyecto en Sitio will also establish links with the academic art community in Michoacán State, as well as with other private, state and national institutions. We seek direct or indirect participation with students related to any art discipline.

Proyecto en Sitio aims to create a forum for an alternative expression of art, in addition to those currenly prevailing in Mexico. It explores and adresses Land Art, a discipline that is yet not well known and explored in this región.

At every stage, Land Art keeps in contact with nature, with the enviroment in which it is placed, not only from the viewpoint of the creator, whose intervention and work is at one with the enviroment, but also from the viewpoint of the spectator, who learns and gains new ways of appreciating the landscape.

We are all born with basic primitive and intuitive senses which, for various reasons, are kept slumbering inside many of us. Just returning to nature, being in direct contact with the natural enviromment, can make us aware that we have these innate senses. We hope that this proyect will awaken and sharpen those senses among our spectators.

Proyecto en Sitio consists of a series of insitu art interventions. These interventions evolve from a variety of artistic disciplines, including sculpture, installation art, painting, photography and so on. They are realized by diverse invited artists, ranging from local artists to artists from elsewhere in México, to international artists from other countries. All Will be artists in residence at the La Coyotera Studio for the 14 day working period.

One of the many goals of Proyecto en Sitio is to better inform local visitors and spectators about Land Art, on-site art interventions in existing landscapes. As residents of Umécuaro, we see the importance of creating awareness and sensivity to this natural enviroment, as well a revealing new ways of enjoying and contemplating nature.

Proyecto en Sitio will also establish links with the academic art community in Michoacán State, as well as with other private, state and national institutions. We seek direct or indirect participation with students related to any art discipline. Proyecto en Sitio will support series of conferences and lectures for the participating artists at differents forums.

The organizars of Proyecto en Sitio hope to realise a tangible project in a continuous form, to be held annually, growing with each new edition.

El arte de la tierra es el arte originario. El ser humano lleva en la memoria colectiva una conexión innata con la manipulación de los cuatro elementos para la creación de objetos a los cuales les da una carga estética, conceptual, contemplativa. El uso de materiales naturales que un creador encuentra en su entorno es una forma de decirle al universo: “Aquí estoy yo y aquí están los otros; los que observan lo que he creado.” La conexión física y también la sutil que se dan en el contacto con el material y el entorno, tanto en el momento creativo, como en la contemplación posterior; obligan a conectarse con el aquí y el ahora. Es un ritual muy primitivo que actualiza y fortalece nuestra relación con la naturaleza, hoy globalmente tan frágil, tan en peligro de ser olvidada y destruida.

Landart is the original art. Human beings carry in their collective memory an innate connection with the use of the four elements to be able to create objects which they give an aesthetic, conceptual, contemplative content. The use of natural materials that a creator finds in his environment is a way of telling the universe: “Here am I and here are the others, those who observe what I have created.” The physical and also the subtle connection that occurs when in contact with the material and the environment, both in the creative moment and in later contemplation, forces one to connect with the here and now. It is a very primitive ritual that renews and strengthens our relationship with nature, a relationship that today is globally very fragile and in danger of being forgotten and destroyed.

Una de las principales maravillas del Arte de la Tierra, es que rompe por completo el mito del arte contemporáneo como absolutamente urbano. Hasta hace poco tiempo, en México se tenía la idea generalizada de que el arte contemporáneo sólo puede darse en la ciudad. Y mientras más grande sea la ciudad, mejor. Y eso es una falacia que poco a poco muchos creadores están rompiendo; sobre todo los creadores de los pueblos originarios, pero también creadores que están decidiendo habitar en áreas rurales. El Land Art no se limita a un entorno, se apropia libremente de cualquier espacio pero tiene un gusto particular por el entorno rural, por espacios donde la naturaleza domina. Con una muy sólida presencia, el Land Art realizado por artistas contemporáneos está presente en todos los países “del primer mundo”. En Michoacán, Proyecto en Sitio marca un parteaguas en esta manifestación.

One of the interesting aspects of landart is that it completely breaks the myth of contemporary art being absolutely urban. Until recently, in Mexico it was believed that contemporary art could only exist in cities. The bigger the city, the better. This is a fallacy that many creators are gradually breaking; especially creators from native communities, but also creators who decide to live in rural areas. Land Art is not limited to one environment, it can take in any space, but it has a particular taste for rural environments, for spaces where nature is king.

In all “first world” countries Land Art, made by contemporary artists, has a very strong presence. In Michoacán, Proyecto en Sitio is a watershed in this kind of artistic manifestation.

The coyote (canis lastrans) is part of many founding myths and legends around the world.

The word for coyote in the Purépecha language is “ts ame”. It is present in many pre-Hispanic artistic manifestations. In the Mexica tradition, Huehuecóyotl (old coyote) is the god of music, arts and dance. Interestingly, Huehuecóyotl could change its gender whenever it wished to.

y está presente en múltiples manifestaciones artísticas prehispánicas. Para la tradición mexica, Huehuecóyotl (coyote viejo) es el dios de la música, las artes y la danza. Interesante dato es que Huehuecóyotl podía cambiar de género a placer. El estudio taller La Coyotera, fiel a su etimología mitológica, reunió en una suerte de fiesta creativa a artistas que se fundieron con el paisaje y crearon piezas muy variadas pero que comparten la calidad y una reminiscencia con lo ritual, con lo sagrado.

Es notable el nivel de calidad de las obras generadas a través de la diversidad de miradas y de talentos. Cada artista, con su personal bagaje, sus intereses y su momento, creó una obra que entregó al tiempo y al espacio, con la incertidumbre de cuál sería su destino.

El conjunto poético, estético y compositivo y conceptual que se logró fue impresionante y conmovedor. Dependiendo de la naturaleza de cada pieza, su permanencia y relación con el entorno fue diferente, pero una cosa es segura: el contacto cotidiano de los habitantes de Umécuaro con cada obra ha dejado huella permanente.

The studio-workshop La Coyotera (meeting of coyotes), faithful to its mythological etymology, brought artists together in a sort of creative festival who merged with the landscape and created diverse pieces that all share a specific quality and reminiscence of rituals and the sacred.

The high quality of the works of art that were created based on different views and talents is remarkable. Each artist, with his or her personal background, interests and moment, created a work of art and handed it over to time and space, uncertain of its destiny. The poetic, aesthetic, compositional and conceptual ensemble that was achieved was impressive and touching. Depending on the nature of each piece, its life time and relationship with the environment was different, but one thing can’t be denied: the day-to-day contact of the inhabitants of Umécuaro with each piece has left a permanent impact.

The work process of the pieces of art was very diverse and the creators were able to use different materials and locations: the veteran

La producción fue muy variada y los creadores tuvieron el acierto de aprovechar diferentes materiales y locaciones: el veterano artista de la tierra, Roy Staab, trabajó en uno de los proyectos más espectaculares: una figura geométrica que remitía al sol sobre el lago, realizada con caña de maíz, flotó sobre el agua por varios meses e incluso tuvo brotes de plantitas en sus últimos momentos de vida. Claro que antes de que las cañas estuvieran dispuestas en esa composición en el agua, Roy Staab tuvo que pelear con las vacas que siempre querían alimentarse de su material de trabajo. Se le veía correr varias veces al día para ahuyentar al ganado vacuno amante del arte. Ioulia Akhmadeeva trabajó placas de transfer en cerámica y pintura acrílica con jóvenes de la localidad, retomando un concepto recurrente en su trabajo que es la familia y el árbol genealógico. Su proyecto se integró como dos piezas murales en dos construcciones muy visibles para todo el pueblo. Al día de hoy ambas obras permanecen sin daños, lo que implica un cuidado por parte de la gente. Indirectamente, este proyecto involucró a los familiares de los talleristas, que buscaron y prestaron fotografías de la familia. Un gran árbol caído, fue la materia prima de Mari Shields, quien se embelesó con las sinuosas ramas y colocó su pieza final en un espacio en el que lució magnífica.

Juan Eduardo Salinas Mora impartió un taller de gráfica, y con la colaboración de Abraham Marín complementaron el proyecto construyendo barquitos de madera, cuyas velas fueron los grabados; sin duda el momento más emotivo del recorrido final fue cuando los jóvenes y niños lanzaron a la presa sus piezas de gráfica convertidas en arte objeto. La prístina tarde, reflejada en el agua, y un generoso pero amable viento; fueron la combinación perfecta para esta obra titulada “Al Otro Lado, Barquitos de los Sueños”.

Lori Nozick retomó elementos de un antiguo puerto visto en un museo para recrear su versión de restos de navíos, anclas y mástiles con barro y madera. La cualidad escultórica de su pieza llamó la atención de todos los visitantes.

“Umbral de libertad”, fue la pieza de Jesús Jiménez, a través de la que reflexionó y revaloró el sentido de la vida y la libertad, se fundió en el paisaje. Evocó muros antiguos y derruidos

landart artist, Roy Staab, worked on one of the most spectacular projects: a geometrical figure that evoked the sun on the lake, made out of corn cane, which floated on the water for several months and even showed shoots of plants in its last moments of life. But before the canes were placed in the water in this formation, Roy Staab had to fight with the cows that constantly tried to eat his material.

He was seen running around several times a day to chase away the art-loving cattle. Ioulia Akhmadheeva used ceramic tiles and acrylic paint and worked with young local people, picking up on a repeating concept in her work; the family and the family tree. Her project consisted of two murals in two constructions that were visible to the entire village. The fact that both pieces remain undamaged up to the present day shows how conscientious people are about them. Indirectly, this project involved the relatives of the workshop facilitators, who sought out and shared photographs of the family.

Mari Shields used a large fallen tree as her raw material. She was enthralled by the winding branches and installed her final piece in a place where it looked magnificent. Juan Eduardo Salinas Mora gave a graphics workshop, and together with Abraham Marín, they complemented the project by building wooden boats with sails that were printed on. The most touching moment of the final show was undoubtedly when the young people and children threw their graphic creations, which they turned into object art, into the lake. The pristine afternoon, reflected in the water, and a rich but gentle wind were the perfect combination for this work named “On the Other Side, Dream Boats”.

Lori Nozick used elements of an old harbor as seen in a museum to recreate her version of shipwrecks, anchors and masts with clay and wood. The sculptural character of her piece caught the attention of each and every visitor.

“Threshold to Freedom” is the name of Jesús Jiménez’s piece, through which he reflected on and revalued the meaning of life and freedom and melted into the landscape. He evoked ancient and dilapidated adobe walls and a doorless opening. His work symbolically created a

de adobe y un vano sin puerta. Creó un espacio simbólico de transición entre el encierro y la libertad.

Elena Saracino, escultora italiana que trabaja principalmente el mármol, hace eco de las construcciones piramidales y con piedra crea a la orilla del lago una pirámide de baja altura. Es posible que debido al material utilizado esta pieza permanezca todavía en su lugar.

Marco A. Marranez realizó una lúdica instalación sonora interactiva con una bicicleta vieja y materiales encontrados, la tituló “Resonancia” y fue utilizada por visitantes y habitantes, sobre todo niños y jóvenes. La bicicleta inmóvil fue colocada estratégicamente mirando hacia la presa, permitiendo al usuario admirar el paisaje mientras interactúa con la instalación.

“Identidades tornasol”, de Mayra Mateo y Karen Fernández involucró a niños y sus madres.

Los niños dibujaron y ellas bordaron sobre los dibujos. Los resultados fueron sorprendentemente bellos y emotivos. La frescura de los dibujos combinada con los coloridos bordados fue perfecta. Los niños hablaron así sobre ellos y su entorno y fortalecieron lazos familiares y comunales. El montaje de las obras, al lado del camino principal del pueblo y junto a la orilla de la presa fue perfecto.

Carmen y Kees, con paciencia y honestidad, han sabido ganar la confianza y el apoyo de la gente de Umécuaro. Ya no son más los extraños y excéntricos con una casa bonita. Ahora son parte de la comunidad. Gracias a su labor, la población tiene ahora una ventana a otros mundos, a otras realidades, a la posibilidad infinita de la creación. Esto directa o indirectamente, refuerza la valoración y empoderamiento de su pueblo, de su tierra, de los paisajes que son naturalmente hermosos, y que ahora suman una experiencia estética creada por estos artistas. Los talleres impartidos, la curiosidad al observar el proceso creativo, el saber que hay visitantes más allá de los turistas de estéreos a todo volumen y cervezas bien frías.

Elena Saracino, an Italian sculptor who mainly works with marble, echoes pyramidal edifices and built a low pyramid out of stone on the shore of the lake. This piece may still be standing due to the material used.

Marco A. Marranez created the playful interactive sound installation “Resonance” by using an old bicycle and other materials he found. The piece was enjoyed by visitors and inhabitants, especially children and the youth. The stationary bike was strategically placed facing the lake, allowing the visitors to admire the landscape while interacting with the installation.

Mayra Mateo and Karen Fernández’s “Litmus Identities” involved children and their mothers. The children made drawings and the two artists embroidered over the drawings. The results were surprisingly beautiful and touching.

The freshness of the drawings combined with the colorful embroidery was perfect. The children spoke about themselves and their environment and hereby strengthened their family and community bonds. The installation of the pieces of art next to the main road of the village and alongside the bank of the lake was perfect.

With patience and honesty, Carmen and Kees have managed to gain the trust and support of the people of Umécuaro. They are no longer strangers and eccentrics with a nice house to them. Now they are part of the community.

Thanks to their work, the local population now has access to other worlds, other realities, and the infinite possibility of creation. Directly or indirectly, this only can reinforce the appreciation and empowerment of their village, of their land, of the landscapes that are naturally beautiful; and now they additionally have an aesthetic experience created by these artists.

The workshops, the fascination in observing the creative process, the knowledge that there is more to visitors than high volume stereo tourists with cool beers.

Tómese en cuenta que La Coyotera no es solamente su taller; es también su hogar. Ellos abren su casa para dar pie a un juego creativo tan íntimo como público, en el que cada creador deja sembrada su huella. Esas son semillas que ya han germinado, y que estoy segura, en breve comenzarán a florecer y con un poquito más de tiempo, a dar aún más jugosos frutos. Espero llegar a saborear, junto con todos ustedes, los dulces frutos de este trabajo comunitario encabezado por dos inteligentes coyotes: Carmen y Kees.

The professionalism and dedication with which Carmen Jacobo and Kees Ouwens have developed this project that is very complex to carry out due to its international and independent character deserves recognition and admiration. We have to remember that La Coyotera is not just their workshop; it is also their home. They open their house to give space to an intimate but yet public game in which each creator leaves his or her trace. They are seeds that have already germinated, and I am sure that soon they will begin to flower, and in a little more time give even more juicy fruits. I hope to be able to taste, along with all of you, the sweet fruits of this community work led by two intelligent and talented coyotes: Carmen and Kees.

Jesús es un artista conceptual moreliano que trabaja con fotografía, vídeo e instalación. Para nosotros creó dos piezas escultóricas realizadas con ladrillos de adobe. La pieza que nos presenta es muy singular y ha sido profundamente influenciada por una experiencia personal sucedida en Morelia. Las obras me recordaron un día en el que me dijo una de sus frases favoritas: “si dejamos que nuestra vida sea nuestro arte”.

Sus dos obras escultóricas son el fiel reflejo de lo anteriormente expresado. Las obras que ha creado no son piezas “tan bien hechas” en cuanto a la “calidad” general en términos escultóricos, pero las ideas conceptuales que las sustentan son muy interesantes y tienen un gran impacto en los espectadores. Las dos esculturas se desintegrarán lentamente y desaparecerán debido al paso del tiempo y a los factores climáticos, de forma que quizá esta parte oscura de su vida deje de existir. En este sentido es una gran pieza relacionada con la experiencia diaria de la vida aquí en México.

Jesús is a conceptual artist from Morelia, working in photography, video and installation. For us he created two sculptural pieces made out of adobe bricks. It is a kind of unique work of art, deeply influenced by one of his personal experiences here in Morelia. The works made me think of a day when he expressed to me one of his favorite phrases: “if we let our life be our art”. Well “for real” his two created sculptural works are the exact reflection of this. The works created are not “that well-made” pieces concerning general “quality” in sculpture but the conceptual ideas behind them are very impressive and have a great impact on the viewers. The two sculptures will slowly degenerate and disappear due to time passing by and climate influences so maybe this dark part of his life will cease to exist.

In this sense it is a great piece, related to daily experiences here of life in Mexico.

Elena es de Italia, obtuvo una maestría en escultura por parte de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Carrara, uno de los lugares con mayor reconocimiento en el mundo para realizar estudios y trabajar el mármol blanco de excelencia. Durante su residencia, mientras observaba su trabajo, tuve la impresión de que este período de su vida la “agobiaba” un poco en el sentido de que quiere expresarse o encontrar su “propio” estilo en la escultura. Parecía estar “perdida” en cuanto a la forma correcta de colocar y trabajar estas extrañas piedras de lava sin las herramientas adecuadas, sin ayuda y bajo condiciones climáticas adversas. Cada día se enfrentaba a estas circunstancias y sobre todo a su “yo” particular. El proceso creativo parecía representar una gran lucha para ella y fue tal vez la primera vez que realmente sufrió al realizar una escultura.

Pues bien, precisamente de eso trata el “arte”, de encontrar un estilo propio y una forma de expresarse sin importar las circunstancias, disfrutando plenamente del proceso que lleva consigo un largo camino. Al final supo manejarlo bastante bien y pareció estar contenta con el resultado final y con su “nueva” experiencia personal que sin duda le ayudará en su empeño personal.

Elena is from Italy, she obtained a master’s degree in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, one of the world’s most famous places to study and work on excellent white marble.

During the residency, while observing her working, I got the impression that this period of her life “burdens” her a bit in the way she wants to express herself or find her “own” style in sculpture. She seemed to be at “a loss” on how to correctly place and how to work on these strangely shaped lava stones without the proper tools, help and bad weather circumstances. Every day she was confronted with these circumstances and, mostly importantly, confronted with her personal “self”. The creative process appeared to be a great struggle for her and maybe the first time ever that she really suffered making a sculpture. En este caso para nosotros fue un recuerdo de un viaje a Haifa, Israel, donde se encontró con viejos artefactos y una atmósfera particular que quería reproducir en su obra de arte. La obra concluida refleja perfectamente esa memoria ya que su presencia en nuestro entorno habla por sí misma y en su propio lenguaje.

Tan pronto como llegó, comenzó a caminar y a examinar el entorno y los posibles materiales a utilizar. También leyó un gran número de libros sobre arte mexicano y rápidamente se le ocurrió una propuesta, la cual ejecutó con disciplina y un estricto plazo de tiempo. Resultó ser la mayor obra flotante que había creado: “El Ojo del Lago”. La mayoría de sus obras son muy frágiles y él siempre se pregunta cuánto tiempo o mejor cuán corto permanecerá su pieza. Nosotros también teníamos nuestras dudas al respecto, pero resulta que esta obra que creó estaba muy bien hecha y duró más de cinco meses en el lago, soportando lluvias, tormentas y olas.

I asked Roy to come over to Mexico to create something. I was not preoccupied or worried at all about what he would create for us. Roy is one of the first artists in the USA making Land Art. Therefore, I let him decide to take his time to come up with an idea. Well as soon as he arrived, he started walking around examining the environment and possible materials to use. Also, he read a lot of books about Mexican art and for sure came up quickly with a proposal, which he executed with discipline and a strict time schedule. The biggest floating work he ever had created, “The Eye of the Lake”. Most of his works are very vulnerable and he always wonders how long or better how short his work will last. We, too, wondered about this but it happens that this created work was very well done and it lasted more than five months out in the lake, enduring rains, storms and waves.

Ioulia nos pidió poder participar cuando la visitamos en la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, donde es profesora titular de la facultad de Bellas Artes. Ella es investigadora del área de arte gráfico, grabado y libros de artista. Su trabajo es su vida y sus recuerdos son su trabajo. En esta ocasión buscó proporcionar a los lugareños la memoria de sus vidas en Umécuaro, para documentar momentos, sensaciones y recuerdos de una forma visual y narrativa. Entrevistó a la gente local, tomó fotografías de ellos y las “transfirió” en azulejos de cerámica que fueron colocados permanentemente en dos muros que ella pintó.

Le costó mucho trabajo encontrar suficientes personas para participar en su proyecto porque estaban un poco ansiosos e incluso “asustados” de exponer sus historias personales en un espacio público. Pero después de haber realizado la obra, mucha gente quiso ser parte de estos recuerdos, sintiéndose orgullosa de su historia.

Por ello, probablemente tengamos que iniciar una segunda edición del proyecto de Ioulia el año que viene para poder involucrar al mayor número de personas posible para que nadie se quede atrás.

Ioulia asked us to participate when we visited her at the University Michoacana of San Nicolas de Hidalgo where she is a full professor at the faculty of fine arts. She does research in the area of graphic art, printmaking and artist’s books.

Her work is her life and her memories are her work. Here she wanted to give the inhabitants a memory of their lives in Umécuaro, to register moments, senses and memories in a visual narrative way. She interviewed local people, took photographs of them and “transferred” these on ceramic tiles which were placed permanently onto two walls she painted. She had a hard time finding enough people to participate in her project because they were a bit anxious and even “afraid” putting their personal stories in a public space. But after all the work was done many people also wanted to become part of these memories, taking pride. So, we probably have to initiate part 2 of Ioulia’s project next year to involve as many people as possible so that nobody feels left behind.

Mari quería volver aquí porque la primera vez que vino aún no había terminado con la investigación y el trabajo con los impresionantes árboles de acacia que tenemos disponibles aquí en Umécuaro. Se decepcionó mucho al descubrir que su pequeño bosque favorito de acacias donde había trabajado el año pasado había desaparecido, talado para plantar árboles de aguacate, un fenómeno de algunas de las regiones aquí en México. Así que esta vez su impulso fue el de crear una espléndida obra de arte de una acacia para mostrar a la gente las maravillas de la naturaleza. La influencia del tiempo y del clima en las formas, la “dureza” de la madera y el resultado final se exhibió en un magnífico lugar. Hubo sudor, las lágrimas, los recuerdos y la satisfacción. Todo combinado en “sus árboles de acacia caídos”.

Mari wanted to come back again because she was not finished yet the first time with investigating on and working with the fabulous acacia trees that are available here in Umécuaro.

She was very disappointed to find out that her favorite small forest of acacia trees where she worked last year was gone, all cut down to plant avocado trees, a fact of life here in Mexico.

So, this time she was moti-vated differently to create a splendid piece of art out of an acacia tree to show the people the “wonders” of nature.

Los alumnos de todos los grados de la escuela primaria de Umécuaro se encargaron de hacer varios dibujos donde el niño pudiera expresar de mejor manera su entorno y lo que lo identifica con el lugar donde vive, los niños explicaron a sus mamás el significado de lo que habían plasmado en el papel, algunas fueron historias de su vida hasta el momento, algunas de sueños y anhelos, los caminos que recorren día a día y algunas actividades deportivas. Con todo esto las madres así como nosotras pudimos vislumbrar lo que es importante para los niños de la comunidad, con qué se divierten, a quién extrañan y aman, y así ver como para la mayoría la presa es un lugar central en su ambiente.

Posterior a la explicación de cada pequeño, las mamás eligieron un dibujo y lo bordaron en un bastidor, también pudieron experimentar al añadir elementos de su ambiente o algún objeto de importancia para el niño.

Mayra and Karen coordinated this project, which consisted of an embroidery exhibition around the Umécuaro dam, involving primary school mothers and their children. The students of all the grades of the primary school of Umécuaro were in charge of creating several drawings in which the child could express his environment and what identifies him with the place where he lives. The children then explained to their mothers the meaning of what they had put down on paper. Some were stories of their lives up to that moment, some were dreams and desires, the paths they walk every day and some were sports activities. Through this experience, the mothers as well as we were able to see what is important for the children of the community, with whom they have fun, whom they miss and love, and thus see how for most of them the dam is a central place in their environment.

After each child’s explanation, the mothers chose a drawing and embroidered it on a frame.

They then had the opportunity to experiment by adding elements from their environment or an object that is important to the child.

Título / Title: Al Otro Lado, Barquitos de los Sueños / Litmus Identities Dimensiones / Dimensions: 120 x 80 x 40 cm.

Materiales / Materials: Contrachapado, lienzo impreso, pintura, silicona / Plywood, printed canvas,

paint, silicon El proyecto consta de trabajar con una cantidad de 20 alumnos de la telesecundaria de Umécuaro una serie de grabados en MDF relacionados con el tema de la migración, impresos en manta, para luego ser montados como velas de barcos que serán hechos de MDF los cuales serán colocados en forma lineal flotando uno tras del otro sobre el lago, representando el transcurso de los migrantes latinos a los EUA. La idea se genera tras la cuestión de que se dice, que cada familia de Michoacán tiene por lo menos un pariente en Estados Unidos de América. En nuestro caso se trataba de mostrar como los jóvenes de la telesecundaria ven y viven esta situación. Teniendo en cuenta que la inmigración es una forma de poder sobresalir, de aspirar a tener algo más de lo que ya tenemos en nuestro lugar de origen. Basado en esta visión de nuestro trabajo, abordamos esta problemática con imágenes grabadas, realizadas por los chicos, que luego imprimimos en nuestras velas de “barquitas de ilusiones”. Con ellas tratamos de representar esos sueños y esperanzas del sueño gabacho, así como las derrotas y las tristezas relacionadas a la inmigración.

The project consists of working with 20 students from Umécuaro High School on a series of MDF prints related to migration. These will be printed on canvas and then mounted as sails on boats made of MDF which will be placed one after another in a line on the lake, representing the course of Latino migrants to the United States.

The idea has its origin in the saying that every family in Michoacán has at least one relative in the United States of America. In our case we want to show how the young people of the high school understand and live this situation, taking into account that immigration is a way of achieving a higher standard, of aspiring something different from what is already available to us in our place of origin. These visions and this subject were transformed into engraved images by the local youth that are then printed on the sails of the “Dream Boats”. These boats aim to represent the dreams and hopes of the American Dream, as well as the disappointments and suffer-ings of immigration. I never imagined being able to participate in a Land Art project with a piece called “On the Other Side, Dream Boats”, let alone expect such a strong impact on me and the spec-

Nunca me imaginé poder participar en un proyecto de Land Art, con una pieza llamada “Al Otro Lado, Barquitos de los Sueños”, y menos pensar que fuera muy fuerte el impacto que causó en mí y los espectadores, mi reacción emotiva y nostálgica, pues sin querer solté en llanto, no pude comenzar ni una oración para explicar de qué se trataba la pieza. Solo dejamos que los barquitos con sus velas grabadas flotaran a la deriva del lago de Umécuaro concluyendo con el final del recorrido de las piezas del Proyecto en Sitio.

Creo que las experiencias valen oro y con este proyecto tuve tantas experiencias, siendo invitado a participar sin saber lo que iba hacer y a lo que me iba a enfrentar. El trabajo que desarrollé con los chicos de la telesecundaria me llenó de tantas satisfacciones, y al final logré el objetivo principal que fue la instalación de los grabados montados en las barquitas de madera sobre el lago de Umécuaro. Conocí y conviví con grandes artistas y maravillosas personas, relacionándome más con unos que con otros, ganando muy buenas amistades y disfrutando cada día de trabajo con risas, preguntas y sugerencias para nuestros proyectos. Simplemente una de mis mejores experiencias que me ha tocado vivir como artista.

Without wanting to, I burst into tears and could not utter a single word to explain what the piece was about. We just let the printed boats drift on the Umécuaro lake, concluding the tour of the works of Proyecto en Sitio. I truly believe that the value of experiences is inmeasurable, and this project brought me so many experiences with it, as I was invited to participate without knowing what I was going to do and what I was going to encounter. The work I did with the kids from the high school was very satisfying and I was able to achieve my main goal, which was to place the prints on the wooden boats on the Umécuaro lake. I got to know and shared time with great artists and marvelous people, connecting more with some than with oth-ers, making good friends and enjoying every day of work with laughter, questions and suggestions for our projects. This has been one of my greatest experiences as an artist.
