A glamorous way to host an indoor birthday sleepover.
All the local resources you need for their big day.
Rather than expensive extravagance, consider these for their special day.
The need for tweens and teens to connect...authentically.
Jonathan William de Villiers Covington (JWill), 15 months, son of Jordan and Heather Covington and little brother to June (6) and Summer (4). Grandparents are Jonathan and Lisa Covington, and Mr. and Mrs. Mai, and his great grandmother is Emily Hammond. JWill is named after his grandfather (Jonathan) and great great grandfather (James William Young) who also went by JWill. JWill enjoys riding his scooter and kicking the soccer ball around the house. He tries to keep up with June and Summer and is currently working on his front roll. He loves getting attention from his sisters’ friends and always carries his sweet smile wherever he goes!
As I have mentioned many times over the years, I LOVE planning for a special celebration. Be it a holiday dinner, a birthday party, or just friends over to watch a game, I am all in for it. As a self-proclaimed spreadsheet addict, I have Google Sheets filled with “to-dos” and party food lists, complete with links to recipes and, of course, Pinterest boards full of fun ideas. When the girls were younger and it came time to plan their birthdays, I was giddy. We would sit down and pick a theme, plan activities, make homemade decor, and menu plan. Of course, we always had to have a themed cake we would make together. They weren’t always pretty but they were fun!
As the girls got older, the birthday planning conversations changed from two girls chatting excitedly to something like this: “What about a mystery party?” “No, thank you.” “How About the Minute to Win It Challenge? Or a Karaoke Party?” “Mom...” “What about...” “I just want to have some friends sleepover.” “Cool! We can do a glamping theme and make...” “Mom, seriously, I just want a plain, simple party with some friends. No theme, no decorations.”
It was at that moment the Price is Right loser horn played in my head. No theme? No decorations? That is when I realized it was not the “stuff” that made it fun for me; it was the time spent planning with my girls. They were growing up and ready for more independence and I just had to accept it. After all, that’s part of our job as parents, right? Creating independence? Plus, knowing she was getting the celebration she wanted was all that mattered (she told herself as she pitifully closed the Glamping Pinterest tab).
On the positive side, a toned-down party was also so much easier on me! While I do love all of the planning, the execution of it all could be a bit much at times. Maybe, as Ashley Elizabeth shares in her feature “Why Keep Birthdays Simple?”, there are much easier and more fulfilling ways to celebrate than wearing yourself out.
Whether you are planning a full-blown party with all the extras or just a simple gathering of friends, you are sure to find some great ideas in this month’s Birthday Party issue! This issue is filled with party planning ideas, local businesses to help with your special event, and, of course, the annual Birthday Party Resource Directory, which is great to keep on hand all year as you plan your celebrations! In the directory, you will find places to host a party, rental companies, entertainment, and more! Also, if your ears perked up when I mentioned a glamping party earlier, you will want to check out Pam Molnar’s feature, Glamping - A Glamorous Way to Host a Camping-Themed Sleepover.
There are always things to celebrate living on the Gulf Coast, and there is no shortage of events celebrating Independence Day this month, so make sure you check out the calendar for a variety of community events. Let’s remember too that we don’t need a birthday or holiday to celebrate life. Grab a cold glass of lemonade and watch the gorgeous sunset as a family, or send a last-minute invite to your neighbors to come over for game night. No frills are needed, just celebrating friendships and fun.

In a world overwhelmed with advice— from social media, grandparents, friends, and more—it can be hard to know what truly matters in parenting. After more than 25 years of experience as both a parent and clinician, I’ve come to believe that nearly all parenting challenges fall into three essential categories.
1. Focus on Task Completion.
Make sure your children follow through with what they’re asked to do.
For younger children, this means using physical, visual, and gestural prompts to guide them. For older children, it means staying present and checking that tasks are completed.
Parents often get sidetracked by a child’s emotional reaction to being asked to do something. When that happens, they either “give in” to avoid conflict or try to control their child’s emotions. Both approaches usually result in emotional and behavioral spirals that are hard to manage.
Instead, stay focused on task completion. This consistency helps raise confident, capable, and resilient adults.
2. Teach Permission-Seeking.
Help your children learn to stop, think, and communicate by teaching them to ask before acting. As soon as they can communicate, they should be expected to ask for what they want or need.
Many parents confuse entitlement with independence. Entitled children grab a snack from the kitchen; independent children ask first and wait for permission.
It’s normal and developmentally appropriate for children to get upset when told “no.” When you hold your ground, you’re building your child’s ability to handle frustration. A child who can effectively communicate wants and needs—and who can accept “no” without falling apart—is well-equipped to succeed in most settings.
3. See Problem Behaviors as Skill Deficits. Most challenging behaviors aren’t signs of deep psychological issues—they’re signs that a skill is missing.
how to respond appropriately yet. Your role is to teach them the skills they’ll need to manage life as adults.
For example, a child who always loses their temper when losing a game needs practice. Play games daily. Before starting, act out appropriate ways to respond and let them practice. At first, they may scream or flip the board. But with repetition and support, they’ll learn to express frustration calmly and show sportsmanship.

A child who tantrums after losing a game, bosses others around, or throws toys at bedtime isn’t broken. They just haven’t learned
Avoid tiptoeing around problem behaviors. Instead, lean in and teach the missing skills. Think about learning to write a name—it takes holding a pencil properly, sitting still, and forming letters. These skills are learned one step at a time through repetition and support. Behavior is no different.
When we know better, we do better. Watch for the skill your child lacks, then practice it—consistently—and encourage every effort and improvement.
As a parent, I,too, was swayed by wellmeaning advice and pop psychology. My need for approval, desire for control, and discomfort with my children’s distress often got in the way of giving them what they truly needed.
Please learn from my experience. If you stay kind and honest—and stay focused on these three core areas—you’ll be far more effective in helping your children grow into the people they were meant to be.

It’s hard to believe summer is almost over, and it’s time to start thinking about upcoming extracurricular activities, which often include sports.
Sports can be a fantastic way for children to build lifelong skills such as leadership, teamwork, self-confidence, and physical fitness. Being part of a team is fun, and helps children grow in many different ways. But is there such a thing as too much of a good thing?
“Sports specialization” refers to when a child focuses on only one sport year-round, often at the exclusion of other activities. While this might seem like a way to build expertise, research has shown that early sports specialization can actually increase the risk of overuse injuries and burnout.
Young bones and joints are still developing, often not fully maturing until after puberty. Repeated movements and constant stress on the same areas can lead to injuries that are
very different from those seen in older teens and adults. Over time, this can limit a child’s ability to continue participating — or enjoying — their sport.
What’s a healthy approach to sports involvement? A good rule of thumb is variety. Encouraging children to try different sports throughout the year helps develop a wide range of skills and reduces the risk of repetitive injuries. It’s also recommended that children take at least 3 total months off from organized sports each year to allow their bodies to rest and recover.
In general, specializing in a single sport isn’t advised until around puberty or later (though there are exceptions for swimming, gymnastics, and figure skating). Waiting allows a child’s body to mature and often results in better long-term success — in fact, research suggests that late specialization may even improve an athlete’s chances of excelling in their chosen sport.
Another key reason to encourage variety is to avoid burnout. Kids who play the same sport year-round without breaks are more likely to experience emotional exhaustion and may end up quitting altogether. Trying different sports not only keeps things fresh and fun, but also helps children make new friends, adapt to different coaching styles, and broaden their social and emotional skills.
Whatever sport or activity your child is drawn to, try to stay flexible and open to change. The most important goal is for your child to stay active, healthy, and happy — and to develop a lifelong love of physical activity that will serve them well for years to come.
There is a well-known quote by successful businesswoman Mary Kay Ash that states, “Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around their neck that says, ‘Make me feel important.’ If you embrace this mindset, not only will you succeed in sales, but you will also succeed in life.”
Cassidy Walter, a teacher at Theodore High School, has embraced the truth of this quote and applies it in her daily interactions with her eleventh graders. Perhaps this is the very reason she was nominated as our Teacher of the Month.
“I stand at my door every day and greet each of my students. I make sure to acknowledge everyone who enters my classroom,” Mrs. Walter shared. “I feel extremely privileged and honored to be nominated for this award because I love my job and feel like I’m good at it.”
Mrs. Walter graduated from the University of South Alabama in May of 2021 with a degree in Secondary Education with English Language Arts as her subject area. She plans to further her education in Instructional Leadership.
“I teach English 11. I’m certified to teach grades 7th-12th, but I prefer teaching high school aged kids because they are a little more relatable than younger children,” she explained. “They are starting to understand life more, so there isn’t as much sugar-
coating with them. I can be myself around them and vice versa.”
Mrs. Walter describes her teaching style as “go with the flow.” She enjoys getting to know her students before diving into the material outlined in the pacing guide. By understanding each student better, she can tailor her teaching to meet their individual needs.
“Real-world engagement and conversations are my teaching strategy. Nearly every single lesson I teach, I try my best to tie it to things that the kids are able to relate to,” said Mrs. Walter. “I let students inside my world. Also, I’m an open book and I feel like by allowing them to see the real me, they are more inclined to listen to the things I have to say and offer.”
When her students leave her classroom and transition into their senior year, Mrs. Walter hopes they carry their critical thinking skills with them.
“I want them to be able to make the right decisions no matter what and to be a kind and loving person,” she said. “Ultimately, I want them to know that they are loved by not only me but Jesus as well.”

As the Class of 2025 prepared to turn the page to a new chapter, one senior chose to leave a mark that will inspire future students for years to come.
What began as a collaborative art project became a personal mission for Kara Anastasio, who stepped up when others were unable to continue. With quiet determination and creative vision, she brought the undersea painting to life on her own, transforming a group effort into a meaningful individual legacy.
The artwork is rich in color and symbolism, vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, and swirling blue waters frame the central message: “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you” (Isaiah 43:2).
This verse echoes the Class of 2025’s journey through seasons of challenge and growth. Kara’s painting stands not only as a work of beauty but as a visual reminder of faith, perseverance, and hope.
Now permanently displayed at Heartwood, the painting is more than decoration; it is a tribute to the resilience, creativity, and heart of a student who turned vision into reality and left behind a gift that speaks to all who pass by.

The summer between fourth and fifth grade, St. Ignatius students take over Spring Hill Swim Club for the annual “Half Way There” party. This transitional time marks the halfway point from kindergarten through eighth grade. Fifth grade is a challenging and rewarding year at St. Ignatius. Students are pushed to be independent thinkers and leaders in preparation for middle school. Fifth grade is the first year students can run for SGA, train as an altar server, have access to flex seating, and get a glimpse into the next chapter of their St. Ignatius career. However, these wonderful students are not in middle school yet! Fifth grade is full of lots of fun activities, projects, field trips and of course, the “Half Way There” party!

Earlier this spring, Covenant Christian School had the joy of welcoming former students back to campus for our Alumni Walk. This special event celebrated our alumni by inviting them to walk the familiar halls once again, reconnect with beloved teachers, and encourage one another. It was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of Christian education and the strong community that continues to grow beyond 8th grade graduation. We were especially proud to recognize two distinguished alumni for their recent accomplishments. Derek Leege, a graduate of St. Luke’s Episcopal School, was named Salutatorian, and Olivia Ray, a graduate of Saraland High School, earned the title of Valedictorian. St. Luke’s Class of 2025 experienced one of our most cherished traditions, “Walking the Halls,” as they bid farewell to the youngest Wildcats on the lower campus before doing the same on the University Campus. For many of these seniors, walking through the infamous red doors of the lower campus held a special significance, a moment filled with nostalgia and reflection, a reminder of how far they’ve come! The next time these students pass through the red doors, they will do so as alumni, carrying with them the lessons and memories of their formative years. We hope the lessons learned at St. Luke’s will guide them to make a meaningful impact in the world and that their time as a Wildcat meant as much to them as it did to us! Never forget, “Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat!” We love the Class of 2025!

About 150 JROTC cadets from 16 local schools had a great experience at last week’s JROTC STEM Leadership Academy, sponsored by Mobile County Public Schools. They honed their STEM skills by building and testing a motorized floating device, and learned about maritime careers through visits to several local businesses and organizations, including Alabama Shipyards, the USS Alabama Battleship, GulfQuest, MAWSS, and the U.S. Coast Guard. They also participated in many different leadership activities, including rappeling and land navigation. The Academy has been such a success that Mobile County Public Schools received a grant to replicate it in other areas. Similar camps are now also being held at 12 other school systems around the country.
Congratulations to our newest NJHS members! Middle school students at St. Dominic have the opportunity to participate in annual plays produced by their Eagle Theatre group. Students act, sing, dance, and work the lighting, sets, and sound. This year, the students performed “The Wizard of Oz” for two nights. Their hard work was evident in this fantastic production.
Students of the LWCC Kingdom Academy visited the campus of the University of Mobile. A treasure hunt led them through the various buildings where they learned about the history and mission of the University of Mobile as well as about the programs they offer. Students participated in a musical game and enjoyed watching some of the university students as they shared their gift of singing and theatre. The day was concluded with an outdoor activity. It’s never too early to start preparing for your future. Thank you to all the Rams of the University of Mobile!
Heartwood Christian Academy made history this spring with its inaugural Awards Night, a heartfelt evening dedicated to celebrating the achievements of students from K5 through high school. With the Student Council leading the charge, the event marked more than just academic milestones; it became a celebration of community, creativity, and gratitude. From the youngest learners to graduating seniors, students were recognized for their growth, character, and accomplishments. But it wasn’t only students who took the spotlight.
In a special twist orchestrated by the Student Council, every teacher and volunteer was honored with a personalized certificate and a small “star” gift as a token of appreciation. These creative awards brought smiles and laughter, with titles like “Lab Coat Legend” for the science teacher and “The Maestro Magic Award” for the guitar teacher. Each certificate reflected the unique contributions of those who pour into Heartwood every day. One of the evening’s most memorable moments came from Mrs. Melanie Daniel’s Friendship Club, which delighted the audience with a special puppet show. Through playful storytelling and heartfelt messages, the students shared lessons on kindness, empathy, and friendship, capturing the spirit of what Heartwood is all about.
From designing décor and setting the stage to coordinating the program and distributing awards, the Student Council demonstrated exceptional leadership, ensuring the evening ran smoothly and meaningfully. Their attention to detail and desire to make every guest feel seen transformed the night into something truly memorable. As the final applause echoed through the room, one thing was clear: Awards Night was more than a ceremony; it was a celebration of a thriving school community rooted in recognition, gratitude, and student leadership.
St. Luke’s senior class president, Gavin Leege, “Passed the Torch” to the senior class president for the 2025-2026 school year, Maddie Banks, symbolizing a change in leadership. The seniors then exited for their last day of school before Maddie addressed the junior class regarding the 2025-2026 school year. Gavin is leaving St. Luke’s in great hands with Maddie.
It’s great to be an IMPALA! During the last pep rally of the year, rising sixth grade students get to pop a balloon and run to their home away from home for the next three years. The middle school houses are a phenomenal tool to cultivate leadership, inclusivity and healthy competition; all while being rooted in the Catholic faith. The five houses are named after saints: Saint Rodriguez, Saint Xavier, Saint Berchman, Saint Faber and Saint Gonzaga. Throughout a student’s middle school career they will gather for over 30 house lunches, compete in over 50 games, complete 5+ service projects and one lucky house will be crowned champion of the year. St. Ignatius has cultivated an atmosphere where it is cool to be kind to your peers, even if they aren’t in your same grade or friend group. St. Ignatius’ middle school is thriving! Students are happy, engaged, challenged and are formed into exemplary leaders.

The Satsuma High School Class of 2025 reached a major milestone, earning more than $6.3 million in college scholarships. During endof-year celebrations, seniors returned to Lee Elementary, where their academic journey began as the first-ever kindergarten class of Satsuma City Schools in 2012. Welcomed by kindergarteners, the visit was filled with smiles, hugs, and shared memories, marking a symbolic connection between past and present students. This special moment highlighted the strength of the Satsuma community and reminded all involved that every journey begins with a single step into a classroom.
We celebrated the 8th Grade Class of 2025 in May. Twenty-four remarkable students who have grown not only in knowledge but in character, faith, and purpose. Under dedicated leadership and our devoted faculty, these students have journeyed together through the formative middle school years, anchored in truth and guided by God’s Word. Their class verse, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31), beautifully reflects the spirit of this class — a group marked by perseverance, unity, and unwavering hope. At Covenant Christian School, our mission is clear: to graduate students who are prepared to understand their world, to communicate with their world, and to influence their world for Christ through servant leadership. This graduating class embodies that mission. They leave 8th grade ready to think critically, speak truth with grace, and serve others boldly.
As they prepare to step into high school and beyond, we pray they continue to rise — like eagles — with courage, compassion, and conviction. May they remain rooted in their beliefs, strengthened by His promises, and ever ready to lead well.
Congratulations, Class of 2025! Your Covenant family celebrates you and stands with you in prayer and pride.
St. Luke’s Center Stage recently captivated audiences with its performances of “Legally Blonde Jr. the Musical,” which graced the stage not once but three times. The production was met with rave reviews, leaving attendees in awe of our students’ incredible talent. The performers brought energy and enthusiasm to each performance, showcasing their acting, singing, and dancing skills. The success was due to the performers on stage and the dedicated tech crew working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every aspect of the production was professional. We thank our theater director, Hannah Grace Smith, for her outstanding leadership and dedication to bringing
“Legally Blonde Jr. the Musical” to life. Her ability to guide our students, helping them hone their acting, singing, and dancing skills, is a testament to her talent and dedication as an educator. This production is a testament to what St. Luke’s students can achieve!
The Mobile County Commission recently recognized Class of 2025 Murphy High graduate Preston Burks, who has been named the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama Youth of the Year. Preston, who will be attending Tuskegee University this fall, dedicated himself to service at Murphy through roles including senior class secretary, Student Government Association executive board member and Crittenton Teen Ambassador. Other finalists for the honor were Haille Baker, a graduate of Theodore High; Harmoni Jones, a sophomore at Mary G. Montgomery; and Zykeem Lane, a graduate of Murphy.
As part of the conclusion of the academic year, many of the parents of St. Dominic 8th graders participated in a parent vs. child volleyball game. The competition was fun for all, and a great way to wrap of the year.
During Nurses Week, Satsuma City Schools proudly recognized and honored the achievements of 16 students who have earned their certification as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). These students have demonstrated exceptional dedication, compassion, and professionalism throughout their training, embodying the core values of care and service that define the healthcare profession. This milestone not only highlights the strength of Satsuma’s healthcare pathway programs but also affirms the district’s role in preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders.

The 8th grade Spanish class at St. Dominic Catholic School participates in an annual event to learn about the traditional quinceanera celebration of many Spanish speaking cultures. The students dress nicely and learn a traditional dance, which they perform for their parents. The 8th graders’ first grade buddies even get to make a special appearance during the event.
If your child loves the idea of camping but doesn’t want to battle the bugs, the elements, or sleep on the hard ground, then glamping is a great alternative. It allows you to enjoy the great outdoors while surrounded by the comforts of home. Glampers can even set up their camp indoors for nights
2. Shabby Chic Blankets - Purchase two twin-sized sheets from the thrift store. Prewash and lay them on top of each other, matching the edge. Cut about 4” from the edge of the fabric in 2” wide strips all the way around. Tie together to form a twosided blanket.
corn, beans, meat and avocados. Seal foil and cook 4-5” from fire for 10 minutes or until cheese melts.
2. For your main meal, warm up mugs of tomato soup and make grilled cheese paninis. Offer the guests cheese options and add-ons like bacon, avocado, tomatoes, and spinach.
– Kits are available online on Amazon or Oriental Trading with everything you need to make a dream catcher. While kits include beads and feathers, you might want to offer other decoration options like ribbons, strips of fabric or dried flowers.
Conversation starters - Prewrite conversation starter questions on smooth rocks and add them to a fancy jar or vase. Have the guests take turns pulling them out and reading the question out loud.
lawn dice by decorating same-sized square boxes. To keep up with your Boho theme, you can decorate the dice in vintage wrapping paper and add the dots with solid colored paper. Make each girl a score sheet from an online printable or keep everyone’s score on poster boards nearby.
3. Chocolate fondue is an alternative to birthday cake. Use strawberries, bananas, pound cake, or marshmallows for dippers.
4. For breakfast the next morning, let the kids make cinnamon rolls on a stick. Use kabob sticks (presoaked in water) to secure the rolls and let them cook slowly (about 15 minutes) over the low heat of a firepit. Drizzle with icing and serve with a fruit cup.
Choose a great kid-friendly camp movie to end the night. If you are screening the movie outside of the Glampground, try filling an inflatable pool with blankets and pillows for a cozy viewing setup. Camp movie ideas might include Parent Trap, Camp Rock, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 or The Great Outdoors.
Goody bags: An easy glamping goody
By Ashley Elizabeth
Over the past decade, children’s birthday celebrations in America have seen a significant shift towards more elaborate and costly events. A study by Everyday Health Group revealed that parents now spend an average of nearly $314 on their child’s birthday party, excluding gifts. This figure underscores the growing trend of hosting extravagant, Instagram-worthy celebrations that often rival weddings in scale and splendor. This trend is driven by a desire to provide memorable experiences and perhaps a sense of competition or societal pressure to host standout events.
However, this move towards grandiosity has sparked discussions about the true essence of birthday celebrations. Many parents are beginning to question the necessity of such extravagance, considering the financial strain and the potential loss of genuine, heartfelt celebration. Ultimately, the goal is to make your child feel seen, loved, and celebrated in a manner that aligns with your family’s values and resources.
Embracing simpler celebrations can alleviate stress and financial burden, allowing both parents and children to enjoy the occasion fully. Maybe all three of your kids have summer birthdays, like mine. Maybe you have five (or more!) kids, and you want them to feel special without turning your home into a neverending birthday party war zone.
Let’s make 2025 the year we ditch the “post-worthy” birthday performances and refocus on what actually matters: celebrating our kids in ways that fill their hearts (without emptying our wallets or sanity reserves). Here are some unique, stress-free birthday ideas that honor your child without overwhelming you.
1. Choose an Experience Over a Party.
Instead of hosting a big party, create memories with a meaningful experience. One friend woke his son at sunrise, drove to Legoland for the day, and returned home as the sun set. It
wasn’t extravagant—just cost him tickets and gas—but spending one-on-one time made it unforgettable. If time or money is tight, a simple outing can still feel special. For my son’s birthday, we took him to a free bike park—his happy place. Doing the thing he loved most with his family enjoying it alongside him, filled his cup more than any party could.
2. Throw ONE big party.
We’ve done this for the past three years, and my kids love it. We rent a bounce house (just once a year), bake a big cake, cook lots of food, and invite every member of the family and everyone’s friends for one big celebration. Each child wears the number of their new age, and when we sing “Happy Birthday,” we include all their names. It’s perfect for our homeschooling family—our kids share friends, and our guests only need to come to one party, not four. We ask guests not to bring gifts, and we give our kids presents on their actual birthdays.
3. Let Them Choose a Special Outing with a Friend. Instead of inviting the whole class to an expensive trampoline park, let your child choose one or two close friends for a special day tailored just for them. Growing up, my best friend’s mom worked at a hotel, so we spent her birthday lounging by the pool—effortless yet unforgettable. For a quieter, cozier option, host a doll or stuffed animal tea party with just a few friends. Picture little ones in fancy dresses, sipping tea with their beloved plush companions—adorable, intimate, and refreshingly stressfree. If your son is more of an adventurer, skip the party chaos and take him and his best buddies fishing at the lake—no sisters allowed. The goal isn’t extravagance, but creating moments they’ll cherish forever (and ones you won’t need to prepare for weeks to do).
4. Make It About Their Favorite Things.
Birthday parties are a modern invention. In many cultures and throughout history, individual birthday celebrations weren’t the norm. If the goal is to make your child feel special, let them pick the day’s meals or desserts. I love cooking my kids’ favorite dishes all day and adding little touches—like a banner over the table or candles at dinner—to make even a simple family meal feel like a celebration. Do they love trucks or horses? Add those embellishments to the decor, if you feel like making it extra fancy.
5. Have a ‘Yes Day’.
Give your child a day where (within reason) they get to make the choices. From picking meals to choosing activities, let them take the lead. Maybe they want to have a pancake breakfast in pajamas, go on a nature walk, or build forts in the living room. A Yes Day is a simple yet powerful way to make them feel special and celebrated.
6. Create a Memory-Making Opportunity.
Make birthdays about storytelling and reflection. Have family members write notes, draw pictures, or share favorite memories about the birthday child. Collect them in a scrapbook so they can look back on years of love and celebration.
The Heart of the Celebration
Over the past decade, the pressure to throw extravagant, Instagramworthy birthday parties has skyrocketed, with parents now spending an average of $314 per celebration—excluding gifts. While lavish themes and big venues may create pictureperfect moments, they often come at the cost of financial strain and unnecessary stress. But here’s the good news: your child doesn’t need a five-tier cake or a petting zoo to feel celebrated.
At the end of the day, birthdays should be about joy, connection, and honoring the beautiful person your child is becoming. Whether it’s a simple backyard festival, a Yes Day where they call the shots, or a cozy scrapbook tradition filled with heartfelt memories, the best celebrations aren’t the ones that impress social media—they’re the ones that leave your child feeling deeply loved. And that’s a gift no amount of money can buy.

Ashlee Wendell and her husband Jayson tied the knot in Jamaica in 2021 after meeting through mutual friends. They welcomed their son Bodie in 2022, and he just celebrated his 3rd birthday in June.
“Bodie is full of personality and brings joy to everyone he interacts with,” shared Ashlee. “My son brings me the most joy in this season. When I was pregnant, I was so scared of how life would change and how I would change…but it has only been for the better! After I had Bodie, nothing else mattered. Seeing the world through his eyes has shown me what life is all about.”
Ashlee and Jayson love the outdoors, which makes family time a lot of fun. You can usually catch the Wendell trio at the beach, camping, golfing, disc golfing, or grilling. Anything really just to stay in the fresh air and sunshine!
“With summer here, we will spend a lot of time grilling and chilling! We love to spend the whole day on Dauphin Island or at Escatwpa River. Then we will come home and grill,” Ashlee said.
As a family, cooking together is also something they enjoy. Ashlee and Jayson are usually both in the kitchen preparing meals together.
“Lately, we have had fun incorporating our little boy in meal preparation, and he seems to enjoy being hands-on,” said Ashlee. Bodie even has his own kitchen step stool, monogrammed apron, and kid-safe cutlery.
Ashlee continued. “I love making foods from scratch such as stocks, breads, dressings, old-fashioned recipes, and snacks for my child in place of packaged items. Cooking and food are my love languages. I put my heart into it and take pride in seeing others enjoy the results.”
Ashlee has one dinner recipe that never results in leftovers: a childhood favorite known as Beef Bake. She shared that her husband and son finish the entire 9x13 baking dish every single time. The meal is very simple, inexpensive, and delicious.
“I truly feel blessed to be able to stay home and be a mother and homemaker,”
• 1 lb ground beef
• 1 yellow onion, chopped
• 1 mixed bag of frozen vegetables
• 2.5 cups of milk, divided
• 2 cups Bisquick
• 2 10 oz Cans of Cream Soup, Chicken or Mushroom
• Optional: 1-2 cups of cheddar cheese, shredded
• Optional: Fresh Salad Mix for side
Directions:
1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
2. While the oven is pre-heating, add the ground beef and onion to a pan on medium-high heat and brown. Drain grease.
3. Add the mixture to a greased, 9x13 baking dish.
4. Add cans of soup, one cup of milk and frozen vegetables. Mix well.
“I chose this recipe to share because I have loved it all my life, and now my husband and child tear it up every time I make it,” Ashlee shared. “My mom went through some hard times financially while raising my brother and me as a single mom. She always made sure we had a good meal, though simple and made with pantry ingredients, and this one was so comforting. Cooking this dish always brings back memories and reminds me how much I appreciate my mom at the same time.”
5. In separate bowl mix 1.5 cups of milk and 2 cups of Bisquick.
6. If your choosing to add cheddar cheese, fold 1-2 cups into liquid Bisquick.
7. Pour liquid Bisquick on top of the ground beef and vegetable mix. Do not mix.
8. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
9. Remove baking pan from oven. Turn off the oven and then turn on the broiler.
10. Return baking dish to oven and let broil for around 5 minutes to brown the top.
11. Serve hot with a side salad, if desired.

“Kristi was here.” The age-old signature pre digital age that we all scribbled (insert your name of course) in yearbooks, bathroom stalls, or carved into trees — it was more than just a scribble. It was a small, silent act of claiming space, of making a mark that said, “I was here, I existed, I was part of something.” For kids growing up before the digital age, leaving a signature was a tangible, lasting gesture. It was a moment of connection, however fleeting, that made you feel seen. It was personal and immediate — a hand touched a wall, a pen touched paper, and that small act carried weight because it was real, imperfect, human. If you were lucky enough to pen your signature onto your crush’s arm, that floating, excited feeling could last for days.
or a message that carried the weight of their moment in time. Now, a “like” or a quick emoji reaction is supposed to carry the same meaning, but it often falls flat. It’s a fleeting notation, a digital scribble in a sea of thousands, easily erased or ignored with a swipe. The sense of permanence has shifted—what once was a deliberate act of claiming space now often feels impersonal, almost disposable. And therein lies the quiet, pensive truth.
tions that make us human. The post, comment, or emoji is quick, transient, and often stripped of the messy, beautiful imperfections of real life. It’s hard to feel the weight of a moment when your marker is a tap on a screen. The sense of permanence is blurred by the endless scroll, the temporary nature of a trending meme, or the viral wave of an impulsive comment.
Maybe that’s why so many of us feel a quiet nostalgia for the days of real signatures—those small acts of connection that required effort, intention, and presence. Because beneath all the digital noise, what we yearn for is authenticity. The slow, meaningful process of leaving one’s mark—whether in ink or in human connection—that says, “I was here,” and, more importantly, that someone else was truly there with you.
Fast forward to today, and that signature has gone digital. Now, kids leave their mark online—an “instant” comment, a like, an emoji, a post. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it reaches a lot of people. But it’s also less personal, less human. Gone are the mornings of flipping through yearbooks and stopping to trace a name
That childhood ritual of marking your presence with a signature, while imperfect and sometimes rebellious, was a form of human connection. It was a tactile, shared experience—one that fostered a sense of belonging. You could see it, touch it, and know that it was real. When you wrote “Kristi was here” on a bathroom stall, you hoped someone might see it someday, smile, or even respond. When you carved your initials into a tree, it meant you had left a part of yourself behind, forever, in a place you loved.
Today’s digital signatures lack that physical intimacy. They are often disconnected from the tangible interac -
Our signatures may have changed, but our need to be seen and connected remains. Perhaps the challenge isn’t in trying to make online signatures mean the same—but in remembering that true connection is still rooted in the authentic, imperfect, human touch.
