I’ll turn 54 in November of this year, and let’s just say—I don’t exactly count down the days to my birthday like I did when I was seven. There’s no big party or themed cake in my honor; maybe a quiet dinner and a few heartfelt texts, and I’m perfectly content. But watching a child light up at the mention of their birthday? Their excitement is contagious. It reminds us that birthdays aren’t just about getting older—they’re about being celebrated. That’s why our Annual Birthday Issue is such a fun one to put together each year. In these pages, we’ve packed in creative

Experience the difference — The Trinity Experience.
In a world overwhelmed with advice— from social media, grandparents, friends, and more—it can be hard to know what truly matters in parenting. After more than 25 years of experience as both a parent and clinician, I’ve come to believe that nearly all parenting challenges fall into three essential categories.
1. Focus on Task Completion.
Make sure your children follow through with what they’re asked to do.
For younger children, this means using physical, visual, and gestural prompts to guide them. For older children, it means staying present and checking that tasks are completed.
Parents often get sidetracked by a child’s emotional reaction to being asked to do something. When that happens, they either “give in” to avoid conflict or try to control their child’s emotions. Both approaches usually result in emotional and behavioral spirals that are hard to manage.
Instead, stay focused on task completion. This consistency helps raise confident, capable, and resilient adults.
2. Teach Permission-Seeking.
Help your children learn to stop, think, and communicate by teaching them to ask before acting. As soon as they can communicate, they should be expected to ask for what they want or need.
Many parents confuse entitlement with independence. Entitled children grab a snack from the kitchen; independent children ask first and wait for permission.
It’s normal and developmentally appropriate for children to get upset when told “no.” When you hold your ground, you’re building your child’s ability to handle frustration. A child who can effectively communicate wants and needs—and who can accept “no” without falling apart—is well-equipped to succeed in most settings.
3. See Problem Behaviors as Skill Deficits. Most challenging behaviors aren’t signs of deep psychological issues—they’re signs that a skill is missing.
how to respond appropriately yet. Your role is to teach them the skills they’ll need to manage life as adults.
For example, a child who always loses their temper when losing a game needs practice. Play games daily. Before starting, act out appropriate ways to respond and let them practice. At first, they may scream or flip the board. But with repetition and support, they’ll learn to express frustration calmly and show sportsmanship.

A child who tantrums after losing a game, bosses others around, or throws toys at bedtime isn’t broken. They just haven’t learned
Avoid tiptoeing around problem behaviors. Instead, lean in and teach the missing skills. Think about learning to write a name—it takes holding a pencil properly, sitting still, and forming letters. These skills are learned one step at a time through repetition and support. Behavior is no different.
When we know better, we do better. Watch for the skill your child lacks, then practice it—consistently—and encourage every effort and improvement.
As a parent, I,too, was swayed by wellmeaning advice and pop psychology. My need for approval, desire for control, and discomfort with my children’s distress often got in the way of giving them what they truly needed.
Please learn from my experience. If you stay kind and honest—and stay focused on these three core areas—you’ll be far more effective in helping your children grow into the people they were meant to be.

This year marks Melissa Baker’s first year at Evangel Christian Academy. However, she is not new to teaching, as she has 36 years of experience in the field. Melissa chose to work at Evangel because it provides numerous ministry opportunities that align with the school’s mission. She values the importance of preparing students both academically and spiritually.
After graduating from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics Secondary education, her passion was to teach. Melissa shares, “As a young student, I did not enjoy school at all! After I realized that I enjoyed learning math and helping others as their math tutor, I decided that if I could help a student enjoy school just a little bit more, it would be worth it.”
And that’s what she did. For nearly four decades, Melissa has been paving the way for students and giving back to the community through her advocacy for education despite the challenges that it potentially brings. But her joy and belief in every student and her vow to never leave a student behind, she shares, “I believe God created every person on purpose, with a purpose, and for a purpose. Preparing students
to live and function in a world that needs their gifts and talents is a high calling and fulfills a deep place in my heart. To teach the students to see the good in people and find good in society propels a circle of kindness that will always come back to you.”
As Melissa dedicates her time to her stu dents, not only is she changing lives and mak ing a tremendous impact across the community, she’s preparing students to live and function in a world that needs their gifts and talents. Her mission is to teach students to see the good in people and find the good in society. She encour ages her students when they do good deeds, kindness will always come back to them.
Melissa hopes people understand that she teaches because she loves it, not just for a pay check. After her teaching career, she would like to continue mentoring the next generation of teach ers. Helping students, families, and teachers find resources to support their learning needs.
The start of a new school year is always an exciting time, a fresh beginning, a clean slate, and a world of possibilities waiting to be explored. As your superintendent, I want to personally encourage every student and family to prepare now for what we believe will be one of our best years yet at Montgomery Public Schools.
This school year, we are raising expectations, increasing support, and staying laser-focused on academic excellence, student wellness, and daily attendance. Each day in the classroom is a powerful step toward success, and we need our students present, focused, and ready to learn. Your child’s daily attendance truly
matters, and it builds confidence, deepens friendships, and lays the foundation for future achievements.
Families, we need your partnership. Start preparing today by establishing bedtime routines, visiting your school’s website, checking supply lists, and attending your school’s open house. Encourage your child to set goals, talk about their dreams, and share what they’re excited to learn. Your encouragement and involvement make a world of difference.
To our students, believe in yourself. You are capable, brilliant, and full of potential. Your teachers, principals, and school staff are here to support you every step of the way. This is your time to shine.
We’re also committed to ensuring every school is a safe, welcoming, and inspiring place to learn. Whether it’s through academic support, extracurricular programs, or access to mental health resources, we are building a stronger system to help every child thrive. This year, expect

Right after school let out, a group of adventurous Trinity students kicked off summer with a whirlwind tour through Europe. Starting in Spain, they explored the rich history of Madrid and the artistic flair of Barcelona, soaking in the sights, sounds, and flavors of Spanish culture. Then it was on to Paris, where they took in the city’s iconic landmarks—from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre—and spent a day wandering the grand halls of Versailles. This unforgettable trip is just one example of the incredible travel opportunities Trinity offers its students, broadening horizons and bringing classroom learning to life, one passport stamp at a time.
Twenty-two students from Alabama Christian Academy recently returned from an incredible nine-day adventure in Greece. The group explored historic landmarks, soaked in the culture, and walked where ancient civilizations once stood. From Athens to Delphi to the beautiful coastal town of Nafplio, students had the opportunity to experience iconic sites like the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the ancient theater at Epidaurus. Each stop brought history to life in a powerful way, deepening their appreciation for classical studies and the foundations of Western civilization. The trip was more than just a sightseeing tour—it was a chance for ACA students to grow, learn, and create lifelong memories together while representing the school with excellence abroad.

Patrick Ernest joined Macon East Academy just last year as a junior and has already made a major impact! He’s a proud member of the Macon East Knights baseball team, serves as SGA Treasurer, and was this year’s representative at Alabama Boys State —a prestigious program focused on leadership and civic engagement. In Patrick’s own words about his Boys State experience: “Where do I begin? I entered the trip unsure about spending a whole week learning about citizenship. But just a few hours in, I realized it was so much more. I quickly settled in and became fully engaged with the program. Throughout the week, I enjoyed hearing from several guest speakers, each an expert in their field. I learned a great deal about what it truly means to be an American citizen and the responsibilities of holding public office. I ran for a seat in the House of Representatives within my city and was elected along with eight others. Our sessions began on Wednesday, and I immediately began working on a bill to improve the conditions of Alabama’s ports. The bill was briefly paused on Thursday to allow a bill requested by our Governor, but on Friday, I had the opportunity to present it in the actual House chamber in Montgomery. It passed unanimously!!! I was incredibly proud of the hard work my team and I put into it. Touring Bryant-Denny Stadium on Thursday was another highlight of the trip—I loved being on the most beautiful campus in Alabama! I’m truly grateful for this unforgettable opportunity.” Way to go, Patrick! Your hard work, leadership, and passion are an inspiration to us all.

From science experiments and math games to water slide days and popsicles, CampSTJ at Saint James School is combining summer fun with learning. CampSTJ serves students entering PreK3 through 5th grade and combines traditional summer fun with engaging weekly enrichment activities. Campers have explored STEM, conducted hands-on science lab experiments, reviewed math skills, and tapped into their creative side through dance, movement, and art. These experiences are thoughtfully woven into each week’s schedule and included with tuition. Of course, summer traditions like Water Day, ice cream truck visits, and themed activities remain. From the first day of school to the final celebrations, Pike Road Schools has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, student growth, and professional advancement. As we wrap up a milestone year, we are proud to reflect on the many ways our learners and educators have gone above and beyond.
At Pike Road Elementary School (PRES), nearly every grade level saw an increase in i-Ready scores, and Pike Road Intermediate School (PRIS) inducted 89 students into the PRIS Beta Club, a national organization that requires members to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA.
At Pike Road Junior High School, the school honored 119 seventh and eighth-graders for making the A-B Honor Roll and celebrated 43 students who earned all A’s for the entire school year. PRJHS also exceeded its A+ Col-
lege Ready student growth goal on the PSAT 8/9. The eighth-grade class not only surpassed the target 60-point gain but achieved an incredible 95-point increase, putting them 39 points above the national average. This outstanding performance earned PRJHS the A+ College Ready School of Excellence Award, a recognition that reflects the dedication and focus of students, teachers, and administrators.
At Pike Road High School (PRHS), the Class of 2025 crossed the graduation stage with pride and purpose. This year’s 192 graduates included 45 honor graduates, 40 students who passed at least one Advanced Placement (AP) exam, 89 students who benchmarked on the ACT, 114 students who completed a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway, 57 students who earned an Advanced Academic Endorsement, 19 students who received athletic scholarships and more than 80 students were awarded academic scholarships, totaling more than $6 million.
PRHS also added nine new names to its ACT 30+ Wall, honoring students who scored 30 or higher on the college readiness exam. And among its many high-achieving students,
PRHS proudly celebrates Annabelle Lipscomb, a National Merit Finalist and recipient of the National Merit Auburn University Scholarship. This year, PRHS was also named to the 2024 AP School Honor Roll, which recognizes schools whose Advanced Placement programs are both expanding access and achieving strong outcomes. The high school offered 13 AP courses across grades 9–12, giving students more opportunities than ever to challenge themselves and earn college credit.
Across all grade levels, Pike Road Schools remains committed to both student achievement and teacher excellence. As we close the year, we’re not just proud of the data—we’re proud of the stories behind it: the learners who set new goals, and the teachers who pushed their students to reach and exceed those goals.

Pike Road School Ladies Golf has done it again! They are the AHSAA State Champions for the fourth year in a row! Congratulations London Leonard, Lauryn Leonard, and Natee Yang!
PRIS rolled out the red carpet for some famous Alabamians. The C4 classes hosted the famous Alabamian Wax Museum once again. These learners studied, researched, and embodied these important figures so they could teach parents and guests about their Alabaman.
At Macon East Academy, the Sagamore Award is one of our most cherished traditions. What makes it so meaningful is that recipients are nominated by their peers—students who recognize those among them who consistently live with integrity, kindness, and selflessness. This is more than an award; it’s a celebration of character. Our students are learning that putting God first, others second, and themselves third is a way of life that makes a difference. The heart of the Sagamore spirit is captured in the Sagamore Creed: “As a Sagamore, I will be worthy of trust, I will love the world around me, and each new day will bring new adventures. I will do what needs to be done without being asked. I am happy with life and with myself, yet I will always try harder to be the best I can be. All this because God, The Great Spirit, is most important to me; The other fellow is second only to Him; and I am third. I am a Sagamore.” We are so proud of these students and the values they represent.
We are so proud of Macon East Academy’s own Livi Robinson, who recently represented our school at Alabama Girls State at The University of Alabama! Alabama Girls State is a week-long, fun-filled, hands-on learning opportunity for some of the best and brightest rising 12th graders in the State of Alabama. Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), Girls State is one of the most respected and coveted experiential learning programs in the United States, teaching Delegates about how government works at the city, county and state levels.
Livi is a standout leader — serving as SGA President, HOBY representative, Dixie Electric Cooperative Youth Tour student, and a member of Mu Alpha Theta, Junior National Honor Society, and National Honor Society, where she also serves as Chaplain. She’s been actively involved in school events including the SGA bake sale at the Holiday Market, Open House tours, Prom Committee, and our Back to School Bash. She also shines on the court as a varsity volleyball player and has served as a Homecoming Attendant.
At Girls State, Livi ran for and was elected to City Council and had an unforgettable experience: “I never really knew the impact 6 days could have on someone like me, but this week has truly been the biggest blessing. At Girls State I learned the importance of government, leadership, and citizenship. But most importantly, friendship. None of the girls in our city ever imagined that in the span of 1 week we would be leaving with a lifelong sisterhood... I will forever hold onto the friendships and memories I’ve made along the way.” Congratulations, Livi! Your leadership, heart, and service continue to make Macon East proud.
Pike Road Elementary School treated families to a special event that brought the arts to life—literally! The Character Breakfast welcomed more than 400 guests for a fun-filled morning of food, music, and student talent. Guests enjoyed a hearty country-style breakfast while being entertained by third-grade theatre students, who dressed up as beloved characters, posed for pictures, and handed out autographs. The PRES choir set the tone with a selection of upbeat songs, followed by a surprise finale—a character dance performance! In addition to the performances, families had the chance to admire a student art showcase, featuring everything from watercolor paintings to clay sculptures.
Prattville Intermediate’s Gifted Program created beautifully crocheted fish and octopuses to be distributed to children visiting the Baptist Health Emergency Department. This thoughtful and creative class project was a wonderful way for our students to give back to the community, and we are so proud of their kindness and generosity.

On May 19th and 20th, Prattville Intermediate School held its annual Awards Day. Students were recognized for their outstanding achievements in academics and physical fitness, showcasing their hard work, dedication, and all-around excellence. With so many students receiving awards, our event quickly became standing room only.
Students in Mrs. Roy’s class at Pine Level’s Superhero Summer Camp completed a thoughtful writing assignment after reading The Rainbow Fish. They reflected on a time they helped a friend in need and then used their creativity to decorate their very own rainbow fish!
On May 1st, Prattville Intermediate School held its annual Field Day. Students enjoyed a fun-filled day playing games like Gotcha, Kickball, Nuke’Em, Wiffle Ball, and more. Featured here is Nuke’Em, a lively variation of volleyball. The day concluded with awards presented to students and classes.
Congratulations, Class of 2025! ACS is incredibly proud to send this year’s seniors into the world ready to make their mark. With over $10 million in scholarships, more than 60% plan to attend college, dozens have pledged their service to this great country, and others are pursuing immediate careers. No matter the path, the future is bright for these graduates.
Elementary students from across the district put on their best capes to power up their math and reading skills during a superhero-themed summer camp disguised as loads of fun.
Fourth and fifth graders made s’mores using solar ovens they built themselves in the STEAM Lab!
Second and third graders explored the world of tools by learning about different types of screwdrivers in STEAM Lab. They practiced using a variety, including hex head, square head, Phillips head, and flat head screwdrivers.
Summertime brings a muchanticipated break for students and teachers, but it is also an busy time as we prepare for the start of a new school year.
Summer academic programs for students began on May 28. Literacy Camps for K-3rd graders and Numeracy Camps for 4th and 5th graders were held on all elementary campuses. Enrichment camps through the 21st Century Community Learning Center program were held on three middle school campuses, all during the month of June. Students especially enjoyed the hands-on activities and exciting educational field trips.
The Elmore County Technical Center hosted 83 rising 9th graders for Camp Discovery on May 27-30. Students had the opportunity to explore and learn about the 16 Career Technical Education programs offered on the ECTC campus in a fun, relaxed
environment. Many participants go on to enroll in one or more ECTC courses, and over 65% of those students returned for a second and/ or third year. Finally, credit recovery for middle and high school students began on May 27 on each campus and runs through mid-July.
We are excited about the growth of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education in Elmore County! STEM education helps develop problem solving, analytical, and creative thinking skills, which students can use in school, in their future careers, and throughout their lives. We take a multifaceted approach to STEM education. Through SCORE (Southeastern Center of Robotics) Auburn University, we are able to incorporate robotics into 6th grade classroom instruction with loaned robotics platforms at no cost to our schools. Students are introduced to programming and have opportunities to connect robotics to content standards. New this year, Project FARM (Fostering Agriculture Research and Mentoring) will help 7th and 8th grade science teachers integrate agri-STEM activities into standards-driven in-class activi-
ties and mentorship of student-driven science fair projects. Project FARM will focus on the specific educational topics of water, food, and forest and how these align with the priorities of plant health and plant products: bioenergy, natural resources, and the environment; food safety, nutrition, and health; and agricultural systems and technology. Project FARM is a collaboration of experts from Auburn University (Colleges of Science & Mathematics, Engineering, Agriculture and Forestry), Alabama Water Watch, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service.
The start of the 2025-2026 school year is just around the corner, and we look forward to welcoming our new and returning students, faculty, and staff. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

The Stanhope Elmore Girls Basketball team hosted over 60 tri-county area 1st-8th graders at 17 Springs for their Annual Basketball Camp. The campers participated in fundamentals of basketball and learned life long characteristic traits that will carry them in their growth in the game and in life.
The Elmore County Technical Center hosted its annual 8th grade CTE exploration experience, Camp Discovery, the last week of May. Students spent 4 days rotating through the 17 programs at ECTC participating in hands-on activities and learning from current high school students in each. On Friday, parents were invited for lunch during an Open House.

2. Yardzee – Make lawn dice by decorating same-sized square boxes. To keep up with your Boho theme, you can decorate the dice in vintage wrapping paper and add the dots with solid colored paper. Make each girl a score sheet from an online printable or keep everyone’s score on poster boards nearby.
3. Scavenger Hunt – Check online for an outdoor scavenger hunt list or make your own. When the sun goes down, you can also do a glowstick hunt around the yard. Assign each guest or team a color for an added challenge.
1. For an easy appetizer or movie snack, make campfire nachos. Fill individual foil packets with nacho chips, cheese, tomatoes, corn, beans, meat and avocados. Seal foil and cook 4-5” from fire for 10 minutes or until cheese melts.
2. For your main meal, warm up mugs of to mato soup and make grilled cheese paninis. Offer the guests cheese options and add-ons like bacon, avocado, tomatoes, and spinach.
3. Chocolate fondue is an alternative to birthday cake. Use strawberries, bananas, pound cake, or marshmallows for dippers.
4. For breakfast the next morning, let the kids make cinnamon rolls on a stick. Use kabob sticks (presoaked in water) to secure the rolls and let them cook slowly (about 15 minutes) over the low heat of a firepit. Drizzle with icing and serve with a fruit cup.
Choose a great kid-friendly camp movie to end the night. If you are screening the movie outside of the Glampground, try filling an inflatable pool with blankets and pillows for a cozy viewing setup. Camp movie ideas might include Parent Trap, Camp Rock, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 or The Great Outdoors.
Goody bags: An easy glamping goody bag is filled with all the fixing for s’mores –chocolate bar, Teddy Grahams and marshmallows. Add a simple note that says, “Life is s’more fun with friends like you”. You can also fill a dollar store cinch bag with travelsized items like toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, makeup removers and lip balm.
“Kristi was here.” The age-old signature pre digital age that we all scribbled (insert your name of course) in yearbooks, bathroom stalls, or carved into trees — it was more than just a scribble. It was a small, silent act of claiming space, of making a mark that said, “I was here, I existed, I was part of something.” For kids growing up before the digital age, leaving a signature was a tangible, lasting gesture. It was a moment of connection, however fleeting, that made you feel seen. It was personal and immediate — a hand touched a wall, a pen touched paper, and that small act carried weight because it was real, imperfect, human. If you were lucky enough to pen your signature onto your crush’s arm, that floating, excited feeling could last for days.
or a message that carried the weight of their moment in time. Now, a “like” or a quick emoji reaction is supposed to carry the same meaning, but it often falls flat. It’s a fleeting notation, a digital scribble in a sea of thousands, easily erased or ignored with a swipe. The sense of permanence has shifted—what once was a deliberate act of claiming space now often feels impersonal, almost disposable. And therein lies the quiet, pensive truth.
tions that make us human. The post, comment, or emoji is quick, transient, and often stripped of the messy, beautiful imperfections of real life. It’s hard to feel the weight of a moment when your marker is a tap on a screen. The sense of permanence is blurred by the endless scroll, the temporary nature of a trending meme, or the viral wave of an impulsive comment.
Maybe that’s why so many of us feel a quiet nostalgia for the days of real signatures—those small acts of connection that required effort, intention, and presence. Because beneath all the digital noise, what we yearn for is authenticity. The slow, meaningful process of leaving one’s mark—whether in ink or in human connection—that says, “I was here,” and, more importantly, that someone else was truly there with you.
Fast forward to today, and that signature has gone digital. Now, kids leave their mark online—an “instant” comment, a like, an emoji, a post. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it reaches a lot of people. But it’s also less personal, less human. Gone are the mornings of flipping through yearbooks and stopping to trace a name
That childhood ritual of marking your presence with a signature, while imperfect and sometimes rebellious, was a form of human connection. It was a tactile, shared experience—one that fostered a sense of belonging. You could see it, touch it, and know that it was real. When you wrote “Kristi was here” on a bathroom stall, you hoped someone might see it someday, smile, or even respond. When you carved your initials into a tree, it meant you had left a part of yourself behind, forever, in a place you loved.
Today’s digital signatures lack that physical intimacy. They are often disconnected from the tangible interac -
Our signatures may have changed, but our need to be seen and connected remains. Perhaps the challenge isn’t in trying to make online signatures mean the same—but in remembering that true connection is still rooted in the authentic, imperfect, human touch.

Elio
Overwhelmed by the death of his parents, Elio doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere. In desperation he decides that he wants to be abducted by aliens – and when his dream comes true and he lands in the Communiverse, he finds himself negotiating with violent would-be conquerors, befriending an eyeless, wormlike alien, and learning lessons about honesty, loyalty, courage, self-sacrifice, and family. Original, heartwarming, and beautifully animated, this Pixar production also features dazzling visual design. Parents will enjoy this movie along with their kids.

Scorned by the fierce Vikings of Berk, Hiccup wants to prove himself by killing a dragon. Then he injures one and winds up befriending the creature who he names Toothless. This unlikely pair will change the lives of both the dragons and people of Berk. A live action reboot of a 2010 animated film, this production is competently made and despite being considerably longer is well paced. The plot is compelling, the actors capable, and the jokes funny. Throw in numerous positive messages and it’s a win for family movie night.
Orphaned young, Lilo is cared for by her frazzled big sister, Nani. Then their lives are upended by an alien who crash lands on earth, bringing mayhem, laughter, and a new perspective on family. A live action remake, this version sheds the charm of the original animated film, while amping up the annoyance factor. Plot changes are pointless and Inexplicably for Disney, the digital animation quality is uneven - a rookie mistake for a legendary studio That said, kids will still enjoy the zany action.
After his brother’s death, Li promises his mother that he’ll give up kung fu. But when they move from China to New York, Li learns that he might need to master karate to defend his honor – and his new girlfriend’s family. Luckily, Li’s shifu from Beijing is able to persuade Daniel LaRusso to help him learn from both martial arts traditions. Well cast, tightly plotted, and delivering themes of courage and selfrespect, this family-friendly flick is a solid reboot of the classic original film. Photo ©Sony Pictures
When his grandson is diagnosed with a brain tumor, Joe has only one way to earn the hundreds and thousands of dollars needed for his medical care: returning to the sport that nearly killed him. Can he stay on a raging bull for long enough to save Cody’s life? Intense themes make this movie too scary for little ones, but it’s a competent, sincere underdog sports flick with strong messages about love, courage, commitment, persistence, and resilience. Genre fans will approve. Photo ©Angel Studios

Over the past decade, children’s birthday celebrations in America have seen a significant shift towards more elaborate and costly events. A study by Everyday Health Group revealed that parents now spend an average of nearly $314 on their child’s birthday party, excluding gifts. This figure underscores the growing trend of hosting extravagant, Instagram-worthy celebrations that often rival weddings in scale and splendor. This trend is driven by a desire to provide memorable experiences and perhaps a sense of competition or societal pressure to host standout events. However, this move towards grandiosity has sparked discussions about the true essence of birthday celebrations. Many parents are beginning to question the necessity of such extravagance, considering the financial strain and the potential loss of genuine, heartfelt celebration. Ultimately, the goal is to make your child feel seen, loved, and celebrated in a manner that aligns with your family’s values and resources.
financial burden, allowing both parents and children to enjoy the occasion fully. Maybe all three of your kids have summer birth days, like mine. Maybe you have five (or more!) kids, and you want them to feel special without turning your home into a neverending birthday party war zone.
performances and refocus on what actually matters: celebrating our kids in ways that fill their hearts (without emptying our wallets or sanity reserves). Here are some unique, stress-free birthday ideas that honor your child without overwhelming you.
1. Choose an Experience Over a Party.
meaningful experience. One friend woke his son at sunrise, drove to Legoland for the day, and returned home as the sun set. It
wasn’t extravagant—just cost him tickets and gas—but spending one-on-one time made it unforgettable. If time or money is tight, a simple outing can still feel special. For my son’s birthday, we took him to a free bike park—his happy place. Doing the thing he loved most with his family enjoying it alongside him, filled his cup more than any party could.
2. Throw ONE big party.
We’ve done this for the past three years, and my kids love it. We rent a bounce house (just once a year), bake a big cake, cook lots of food, and invite every member of the family and everyone’s friends for one big celebration. Each child wears the number of their new age, and when we sing “Happy Birthday,” we include all their names. It’s perfect for our homeschooling family—our kids share friends, and our guests only need to come to one party,
4. Make It About Their Favorite Things.
ern invention. In many cultures and throughout history, individual birthday celebrations weren’t the norm. If the goal is to make your child feel special, let them pick the day’s meals or desserts. I love cooking my kids’ favorite dishes all day and adding little touches—like a banner over the table or candles at dinner—to make even a simple family meal feel like a celebration. Do they love trucks or horses? Add those embellishments to the decor, if you feel like making it extra fancy.
5. Have a ‘Yes Day’.
Eight Macon East student-athletes were honored to participate in the 2022 AISA All-Star Football game held December 2 at Cramton Bowl. Deonte Powell, Sanders Manning, Gabe Spencer and Hunter Tillman all represented Macon East for the East team. Gabe Spencer was honored as Most Outstanding Offensive Back for the East team. Madison May, Ar’monni Payne, Hannah Kate Hodges and Mikalah Belser cheered the East team on from the sidelines as part of the all-star cheerleading squad. The participants enjoyed a few days of practice with their fellow AISA teammates. The East team beat the West team this year 36-22.
Give your child a day where (within reason) they get to make the choices. From picking meals to choosing activities, let them take the lead. Maybe they want to have a pancake breakfast in pajamas, go on a nature walk, or build forts in the living room. A Yes Day is a simple yet powerful way to make them feel special and celebrated.
6. Create a Memory-Making Opportunity.
Make birthdays about storytelling and reflection. Have family members write notes, draw pictures, or share favorite memories about the birthday child. Collect them in a scrapbook so they can look back on years of love and celebration.
Ms. Johnson’s fourth grade class enjoyed an educational field trip this past Friday that goes along with their study of Alabama State History. The students were able to tour Alabama’s historic Capitol. They were able to view the beautiful rotunda, the spiral staircase, the Avenue of Flags, and the portraits of the former governors. The students also enjoyed touring The First White House of the Confederacy and The Alabama Department of Archives and History. Their special treat added to an already fun-filled day was eating lunch at Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs. Special thanks to Mrs. Custard and her daughter for taking time to guide us and give their expertise at all these historic places.
may create pictureperfect moments, they often come at the cost of financial strain and unnecessary stress. But here’s the good news: your child doesn’t need a five-tier cake or a petting zoo to feel celebrated.
At the end of the day, birthdays should be about joy, connection, and honoring the beautiful person your child is becoming. Whether it’s a simple backyard festival, a Yes Day where they call the shots, or a cozy scrapbook tradition filled with heartfelt memories, the best celebrations aren’t the ones that impress social media—they’re the ones that leave your child feeling deeply loved. And that’s a gift no amount of money can buy.

To parents of teens, the title of this article may seem surprising. Teens and happiness? What could that possibly mean? Teens often walk around with a sullen demeanor, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s a lot that parents can do to help their teens stay happy – at least most of the time!
Here’s what the experts suggest:
Teens spend their time and energy worrying about how they look to others, especially friends. But too much introspection doesn’t really make anyone happy. Happy teens are those that are able to look beyond themselves and engage with others. One of the best things you can do for your teens is encourage them to take up extracurricular activities like art and crafts, music, or sports. “Extracurricular activities,” says Kaela Scott, a well-known therapist, “create structure and research has shown that those involved in these activities have higher self-esteem.” Simply put, participating in extracurricular activities make teens feel good about themselves.
Teens are even happier when they’re doing something meaningful for others instead of just hanging out with others. As educational psychologist Dr. Michelle Borba, the author of UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World and many other parenting books, puts it: “Kids are happier when they give to others, not when they get for themselves.” Encourage your teens to look for volunteer opportunities like coaching a little league baseball team or being a companion to elderly people in an assisted living facility.
Another thing that makes teens happy is when parents treat them as friends and not just as kids. Teens need you to guide them into adulthood and to teach them how to make good choices, but they also need you to be there for them as people that they can trust and confide in. “Teens crave the security of knowing their parents understand them, appreciate them, and love them no matter what,” says clinical psychologist Dr. Laura Markham, author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids. “So they do want the relationship to be a form of friendship.”
To be a genuine friend to your teens, listen carefully to what they share with you and try not to judge them. “Teens want to feel heard but don’t necessarily want advice,” says developmental psycholo gist Jessica Cleary. “Validating their experience without judgment will result in your teen confiding in you more often, bringing you closer together.” For example, if they tell you about a problem they’re having with a close friend, don’t try to come up with a solu tion to the issue right away. Show them that you understand what they’re going through, assure them that it’s a common experience, and recount similar experiences you had as a teen.
To raise happy teens, you need to be happy yourself. “When you’re in an emotionally generous mood,” Dr. Markham says, “everything changes: You’re patient, you’re warm, you’re giving, and your kid blossoms.” Conversely, she says, “if you’re in a bad mood, what unfolds with your kid is going to be tense, they’re going to act out to get your attention, they’re going to be anxious, they’ll begin to echo your tone of voice.” So, do things that make you really happy. It’s good for you – and for your teens.
The Theta Alpha Gamma Christian Sorority hosted a Children’s Tea Party at the downtown Public Library on May 31st to celebrate International Children’s Day. Yummy food and entertainment by dancers from Tonya Speed’s Dance Connection, plus cute decor made for a fun morning celebrating children! Door prizes were given and a good time was had by all!
The Junior League of Montgomery (JLM) is proud to announce the launch of its 100th Anniversary Membership Recruitment Campaign, celebrating a century of women’s leadership, civic service, and community impact in Montgomery.
As the League enters its centennial year, it invites women across Montgomery who are passionate about service, leadership, and community advancement to join its legacy. The League is currently accepting applications for new members through July 31, 2025, offering an opportunity to be part of a dynamic organization that has shaped the social and civic fabric of the city since 1925.
“This is more than a milestone—it’s a movement,” said Amerika Blair, Vice President of Membership.“For 100 years, the Junior League of Montgomery has been a home for women who are ready to lead, serve, and uplift our city. We’re calling on the next generation of change-makers to step forward and make history with us.” JLM’s 100th year will include a robust calendar of service projects, professional development events, and celebrations that honor the League’s deep roots and ambitious future. The organization continues to focus on developing women as civic leaders and addressing critical community needs in education, health, and family support.
“Our centennial is a reflection of the women who have given their time, voice, and heart to this city,” said Courtney Cureton Baker, 99th President of the Junior League of Montgomery. “As we look to the next 100 years, we’re excited to welcome new members who will continue our mission with purpose, passion, and pride.”

RRP: Tell us about your career as a dance educator at Carver Elementary and teaching dance camp at ASU.
KRA: I began teaching dance at 16 through the ASU Performing Arts Camps, and this past June marked 11 years as a camp dance instructor. In 2020, I expanded my journey by joining Carver Elementary as a dance teacher. Teaching has allowed me to instill a love for art in children as young as five and watch them grow into confident, expressive dancers.
RRP: Being a girl mom of a two-year-old, how do you balance your career and motherhood?
KRA: I balance both by creating a life where my career and motherhood support each other. During the week, Kailee attends a fantastic daycare that allows me to focus on work. On weekends, she’s with me at events—watching me teach, create, and lead. She’s already mimicking me, calling herself a teacher and entrepreneur, and I love that she sees passion and purpose in action.
RRP: How did you maintain a healthy pregnancy?
KRA: As a dance teacher, I remained active and continued teaching until 38 weeks—just two weeks before giving birth. Dancing with my students reminded me how strength and passion can carry you through any season. I stayed active with my students the whole time, still teaching, moving, and even demonstrating choreography. Of course, some days were more difficult than others, but being in the studio, surrounded by music and my student’s energy, kept me going. It also felt empowering to challenge the common misconception that expecting mothers should remain completely sedentary throughout their pregnancy.
RRP: What’s the best advice you would give to a new mom?
KRA: Give yourself grace—real, patient grace. You’re learning your baby, your body, and a new way of life all at once. That’s no small thing. I remember in the early weeks after having Kailee, I put a lot of pressure on myself to have everything figured out and be the “perfect” mom. But the truth is I was exhausted, emotional, and just trying to make it from one feeding to the next.
RRP: How does teaching young children inspire you as a mom and play a part in your parenting journey?
KRA: Being a teacher is one of the most rewarding parts of my life. I get to watch my students grow in both skill and character. The same values I share with them—kindness, resilience, confidence—are what I hope to instill in my daughter as she grows.
RRP: As a busy mom, how do you maintain your self-care?
KRA: As a busy mom, I’ve learned that self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant, it just has to be intentional and consistent. I keep it simple by carving out a few hours just for me. Sometimes, that looks like going on peaceful morning walks to clear my mind and reconnect with myself. I attend church, where I can center myself spiritually while finding encouragement. I also try to make time to connect with friends, whether that’s through brunch or just catching up over the phone. Those small moments of rest and connection help me reset and feel more like myself. They remind me that I’m not just a mom—I’m a whole person, and taking care of that person allows me to show up better for everyone else.
RRP: How did you teach your daughter to acclimate to other people?
KRA: It’s a daily learning experience. At two, my daughter’s personality is blossoming—some days she’s social, while on others, she’s more reserved. I model positive interactions, and we intentionally keep her around people so she can build comfort and learn social cues. She’s growing through exposure, example, and patience.
RRP: How has your support system been instrumental in your life with a young toddler?
KRA: As the first baby in our family in 19 years, she’s our shared joy, bringing us even closer together. Their support is the reason I can still be the go-getter I am, pursuing my passions and fulfilling my commitments. They step in without hesitation - whether that’s picking her up, keeping her for the day, or bringing her to every performance so she can see her mommy in action. They make her feel just as included in everything I do, and that means the world to me.
Favorite song? “Trust in You” by Anthony Brown One thing you wish you could change in the world? The way people view and support young working mothers Favorite phrase? “If it is to be, it’s up to me.” What makes you belly laugh? Everything. I’m silly by nature. Introvert or an extrovert? Extrovert. I love meeting new people and trying new things.
