‘A huge part of our school community’ Westbrook mourns loss of Simba, longtime daily visitor to high school By Michael Kelley WESTBROOK — Westbrook High School students will be without one of their favorite classmates next school year. Simba, the orange tabby who was a beloved, daily visitor at the school for the last 18 years, passed away last week. “He was a friendly and social cat, so he would go over to the high school because he saw people and saw kids congregating there,” said Eileen Shutts, Simba’s owner for the last dozen years. Shutts said Simba, who she guessed was at least 20 years old, had been a

fixture at the school since 2000 when he wandered there from his nearby home. Math teacher Tina Soucy was the first to let him in when he showed up by a door near her classroom. Simba quickly became a part of the school community, said Westbrook High School Assistant Principal Jennifer Brooks. “He was super therapeutic for a lot of kids. He had his own chair in the guidance office, a blue chair with light fur students knew not to sit in. When students came in sad or needed someone to talk to, the first thing they would see was Simba,” she said. “You could see in some kids how important he was in terms of stress relief and offering a calming presence in the school,” Brooks added. Simba didn’t have a set schedule, but rather came and went as he pleased, Brooks said. He could often be found in the guidance office or After arriving at the high school, Simba would in Soucy’s classroom, where he was patiently wait until someone opened the door for him so he could roam the halls, much to the delight Simba, page 12 of students and staff. No fence, no license: Don’s Lunch shut down By Michael Kelley

WESTBROOK — Don’s Lunch, a fixture in Westbrook since 1976, is looking for a new place to operate weeks after opening at 925 Main Street after its business license was revoked by the city. As a condition of operating at Friendly Gas, Bernier was to install fence between his business and the condominium building next door by June 21. He didn’t do so, and his license has been pulled. The fence requirement, as well as closing down the mobile food unit by 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and 10 p.m. during the week, were the conditions imposed on Bernier by the City Council

Change in law could allow cocktails along River Walk By Michael Kelley WESTBROOK — For years the River Walk has been a nice place for a stroll and to take in the views of the Presumpscot River, but a matter scheduled to come before city councilors this month could make it a nice place to sit and enjoy an adult beverage as well. City staff is working on an amendment to the municipal liquor license ordinance

that would allow restaurants to serve alcohol on city-owned property near their buildings so long as the seating is cordoned off and has proper signage. The amendment stems from a change in state law that will go into effect Aug. 1 that permits the sale and consumption of alcohol in an area that doesn’t directly border a “licensed premises.” “We are currently working on amending our definitions/ordinances to afford

this practice per the state requirements,” said City Planner Jennie Franceschi. “The City Clerk is working to get this language before the council in July so that it will coincide with the timing of the state language being in effect.” Once a final draft is ready, City Administrator Jerre Bryant said he will recommend that the City Council refer it to a meeting of the committee of the whole for discus-
