WELCOME TO KBPS! Hello and welcome to the latest edition of KBPS!

This Month’s Must Listens

Though not technically twelve months since we first began (a couple of lazy months put paid to that!) we have nonetheless reached edition number twelve, and like many of the recent issues this one is crammed with yet more interviews with some of our favourite new and emerging artists.

When it comes to interviews we only pick those who have done songs we enjoying listening to, and in this edition we enjoy the incredible The Curious Incident who came and performed two songs live for the radio arm of our show. Alongside these seventeen (!) interviewed we have four pages of our favourite songs to listen to this month, which you can hear both on YouTube and on Spotify, using the link in the bottom right hand corner, plus reviews of all the newest singles landing in our inbox or through our door in the last four weeks. One of the albums we review is Ward Thomas’ second LP and we’re really chuffed the duo have scored the UK’s first number one country album. I got to see them live last year (and will see them live again soon) and intervew them, and they were such a great pair and so talented! Anyway, we hope you enjoy the latest edition of KBPS and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more interviews posted weekly and some of our favourite songs as they come out.

Make sure you also explore music by checking out our favourite songs of the last twelve months in the catalogue at the back.

LUCKY SEVENS

We spoke to Swiss band 77 Bombay Street about their latest single ‘Waterproof’ Matt, Joe, Esra and Simri-Ramon make up folk-rock band ‘77 Bombay Street’. As they released their new single ‘Waterproof’ we spoke to member Esra about their career so far and began by asking him to describe their new release. “It’s the most rocky song on our record. There’s lots of energy in it with loud drums, electric guitar and strong vocals!”

Agreeing that it’s a big summer anthem, Esra told us the reaction to it has been great. “People loved it [in Switzerland] so we thought we’d release it in the UK as a single and we hope that it’s going to be successful. We’ve got a good feeling about it!”

Though there are no plans for a video for this release, there are hopes for something visual to go with future singles. “We hope to record one in England!” Matt from 77 Bombay Street wrote ‘Waterproof’ and it was the track the band fell in love with.

The band performed at the Great Escape festival earlier this year. “We loved Brighton. The atmosphere and the town [were great] and there so many live venues and bands. We feel like it should be our second home!” Describing their live sound as epic, Esra talked with passion about their

performances. “We always have fun on stage. People always tell us after they’ve seen us for the first time that they’re surprised by how happy we are and how much fun we have on stage. “It’s all about energy, fun and having a good time together!”

The band have previously supported acts and have played alongside Mumford and Sons. “We met the Baseballs from Germany. They’re now really good friends with us, and we’ve played over twenty shows together! That was really, really cool for us! “It was a really big tour all over Europe, and it was actually our first time touring. There were plenty of parties on the bus!” With ‘Waterproof’ following single ‘Seven Mountains’, the band are now looking at plans for a UK tour having done some dates over the summer and some live gigs earlier in the year.

Hoping to come and play in the UK, a country

Esra described as beautiful, he talked about a lack of language barrier helping. “We sing in English. When we play in Switzerland they understand English but it’s different. [In the UK] everyone was listening to what we were singing so that’s pretty different for us, to see how people react to us!” The band have dabbled in music in their mother tongue, including some Swiss yodelling, though he confessed that “we didn’t like it that much!”

We had to ask Esra before we finished the interview whether seven was a lucky omen for them, taking in their band name, the title of their first single and the fact they’ve been together for seven years. “Our third record is also called ‘Seven Mountains’ so it’s a magical number for us, very special!”

SHOW ME THE MONEY We met up with Kairo and Diaz of the Curious Incident to speak to them about their new music such as catchy new single ‘Money’

Kairo and Diaz are the singer and drummer of the Curious Incident respectively and we caught up with them as they headed up North to perform at a very special food festival and we asked them what their hopes were for the time there.

Kairo: “Number one, play. Number two, play well, and number three, as it’s a food festival, eat.” Diaz: “And four, don’t get food thrown at us!” Confessing that music is their priority, “food comes pretty close!”

Kairo and Diaz described their band as focussing on pop-rock but with a Caribbean twist. “It’s got the spice of hot sauce, and the nice of lemonade! We both met in the Netherlands and decided to move to the UK to make a go of it here. It’s been a pretty wild ride so far, but we’re excited about the future, and we have new music coming out too. “It’s great to get on the road and play for true music fans!” They were attracted to the UK for the music scene. “It’s very dispersed over the country,” Diaz told us. “Lots of legendary bands come out of the UK!”

The Curious Incident have a new EP out called ‘Penny Lonesome’. “There a track on it called ‘Money’ and that’s quite tongue in cheek,” Kairo told us. “I mention Aloe Blacc and Sam Smith in the lyrics. Independent musicians are always trying to find money and have other jobs to pay for stuff. It’s funny how these debut singles are like, we don’t need money. But you have money? So it’s a little ironic there! “We have another track called Diane and

KBPS

there’s a fun music video we did for that in a school in London, and that’s a song about a school-time crush that blossoms into full-time love, inspired by my cousin who is quite a famous musician in Canada, who had a super long-term relationship with his girlfriend - now his wife and mother of his children. It’s quite a sweet story. “We have another one which is a live favourite called ‘The Hunt’ and it was interesting trying to capture the live atmosphere in a studio recording environment. It was something we weren’t quite used to.”

“It was different to how we did it live,” Diaz said, “But it worked.”

“And then we have ‘Please Don’t Say’”. Kairo completed talking about how sing-a-long it is “This is more indie orientated than the other tracks, and it’s good fun and really live.” Asking them about their favourite track, Diaz plumped for ‘The Hunt’. “It’s the kind of track that continues to grow on me! There are lots of elements that went in to making that song, with background vocals inspired by African rhythms and chants. It’s a bit more eclectic than the other tracks!” Talking to them about their music videos, it was a side to their music they were keen on, telling us about their roles as directors and producers on the shoots for music videos for tracks like ‘Money’ and ‘Diane’. “The only thing we don’t do on them is holding the camera! At the moment we’re editing little video clips of us at festivals until we get a bit bigger and can have more of an entourage! Until then we’re kind of like the guy who comes round to your house on a sunday afternoon and can do anything! So we’re like a Jack of all trades”.

8

Kairo told us making the music video for ‘Money’ was particularly fun. “We had scenes in slow motion of coins coming out of my mout and throwing five pound notes that I’d collected over two years!”

“At these food festivals you get people from all walks of life coming for food, drink and a bit of music. The ones in Luxembourg are more music-focussed so we’ll adapt our performances.

Describing the band’s live sound as predominantly electric in style with energy to get people up and dancing, they also said they often play more chilled-out sets. “Sometimes in the middle of a set I’ll go into the middle of the audience and play an acoustic track and make people feel awkward by singing right up in their face. We’ve had some funny stories with that!

“We had no idea,” Diaz told us, “And we were playing on the smaller stage too!”

“That was a creative one,” Diaz told us. “We worked in one space but had to make it so it didn’t become repetitive. And there were models so that was cool!”

“People like music as it makes them feel good so we’re trying to do that first and foremost. People also relate to music on an emotional level, so we have songs to try and cover those bases.” The pair made an appearance at the Foodies Festival in Harrogate in August too, having been recommended to the organisers to play there. “We’ve been in Cheshire, in Birmingham, a couple in London, in Oxford and in Luxembourg!

KBPS

“This time last year we were at a huge festival in South Africa and we only had one or two songs on the internet but the audience had embraced this and learnt the words to the songs. There were 5000 people dancing and singing our songs, which for an unsigned band was mental and I want more!”

Looking further ahead, the band hope for more radio playlisting and hitting the big festivals, which was a key reason for them relocating to the UK.

“Festivals are amazing!” they said as the interview came to an end, and from hearing them live we have no doubt that will win over those crowds when the next festival season comes round.

Shining Star

We speak to Erin Kinsey, rising country singer, on her new self-titled EP including songs ‘Y.O.U.’, ‘Ain’t Gonna Settle’ and ‘Shine’.

Erin Kinsey is an exciting new country singer-songwriter from Rockwall in Texas who, alongside singing and composing, also plays the guitar and piano amongst other instruments. Having spent the last few years touring Texas with her band and honing her talent in the famous musical city of Nashville, Erin has also stepped onto these shores at this year’s Country to Country festival. As she releases, her self-titled EP we got to speak to her and ask her about the record.

“What I’ve written over the past four years since I started writing music has become the first EP that I’m putting out for everyone to hear. It has the songs on it that mean a lot to me and that other people can relate to.” Erin describes the process of creating the EP as awesome. “Going up to Nashville and writing with people who are so amazing at what they do was just one of the best experiences. And I also got to record with amazing people and it was just such a great experience all around.”

Nashville was a great experience for the singer. “Everyone there is so professional, and they’re extremely good at what they do.” Picking ‘Waiting List’ as her favourite track but also “loving each of them in their different ways”, describing the song as fun with a lot of energy behind it.

KBPS

Playing seven instruments has helped Erin shape her music. Also confessing to a love for performing she also talked about her recent time at the Country to Country festival. “It was awesome. It was my first time out of the US and I got to do all the tourist stuff and go around London. Country to Country was absolutely insane with all these people coming together to support country music.” We asked Erin why she thought country music was now so popular in the UK, telling us that the music doesn’t sugar coat life, and tells it how it is. “There’s not a lot of genres that do that.”

Describing her live sound as a mixture of old country and new country, she told us “me and my band just want to make sure the audience is having a great time.

“I love being on stage and just letting it all go, and getting to meet people after, as well as looking out at the crowd and showing people who you are.” Further down the line Erin has plans for some videos, and an album. “Back in July I was in the studio recording some new stuff. Hopefully in the next months we’ll get some more out.”

BE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE We chat to Errol Kennedy of Imagination about his new song ‘You Can Be (All You Want To Be)’

Errol Kennedy was one of the original members of Imagination and thirty-five years on has released an exciting new funky single called ‘You Can Be (All You Want To Be)’. We spoke to him a few days after his birthday where he’d celebrated the occasion with a trip to a winery. We chatted to Errol about his new single as he headed off to film the last scene of the song’s music video and asked him to tell us more about it. “The song is an uplifting track. It’s inspiring to the younger generation [about how] you can be anything you want to be.”

The video, picking up the mantel of the song’s theme, features boxers, lawyers, athletes and other iconic people, “the sort of people the younger generation can inspire to be like.

“On the cover of the single I’m dressed up as many different people. It’s an uplifting song that will encourage people to be the best that they can be!” The video, which is due online soon, looks to be exciting. “We tried to include in it as many iconic people as possible, just to give that idea of what the song is about.” The song fits firmly into the disco genre and we were keen to find out from Errol why he thinks such music has had a resurgence recently. “I don’t think you can ever get away from the style of the eighties. Even though you’ve got a different style of music in the charts now there’s an element of seventies and eighties music in there. “For me, dance music has never gone away. At any club you go to on the planet you’re always going to have an element of dance influence in there. For me [the seventies and eighties] were the best times, when music

was creative. It’s also to do with the lyrics. They were very uplifting, very positive, and encouraging as well. “They gave you an inkling of what things were like in that time period. Things are very tough now for young people and the competition is very tough, so everyone needs the encouragement that they can do this, and be somebody, and do that extra thing to be the best that they can be. “That’s what is needed today as life is so fast and we can sometimes lose our way. “Back then music was experimental and record labels helped, and I don’t think it’s as much like that now. I think some music is thrown out there without that passion there was before. “That’s not to say there isn’t any good music out there but it’s harder to find.”

Alongside the single, Errol has also been celebrating thirty-five years of ‘Imagination’ with a special live album release. “It’s got all the hits on there, and it’s all live. The album cover says it all. We did a gig over in Italy last year and I used the picture from that. You will see the album cover with me in a silver hat, and behind me is a massive crowd!”

Errol spoke passionately about the live experience and how recording the live album took him down memory lane. “It’s the feeling you get when you’re playing the music and we tried to get that feeling across on the live album, and I think we’ve succeeded. Everyone that’s listened to it has said it has captured the spirit of what Imagination is all about.” Following the video recording, Errol performed live at Ibiza over the summer as well as working on more press coverage,

with further dates over there in October and another in London in the same month. As well as the actual music, Errol Kennedy has also branched out into the recording side. “I love doing production, not only for my projects but also for other people. I worked with Jamiroquai on his debut single! “It was great to contribute on a production point of view, but I’ve also made ten documentaries, and written pieces for them. It’s nice to be doing production for other people. I’m also going to be doing another Imaginaton album next year, which will also include members of my family. “I’m going to be doing some tracks with Grace Kennedy, as well as my son and my daughter and my grandson. That’s going to surprise a lot of people. I’m looking forward

to doing that.”

Alongside his music, Errol Kennedy is also an author with five books published on aviation and world war two. “It’s about the people and the planes and how they were made, and how they came about,” he told us, with one book covering the stories of pilots who suffered burns and were treated by a revolutionary plastic surgeon.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page and we’ll promote the video for the new single when it is online.

Heartracer

Chris and Chip Crosby join us to talk about their live shows and new single ‘Hollow’.

Brothers Chris and Chip Cosby and Bryan Reyes make up American band Heartracer. In one of our favourite interviews of recent weeks, we spoke to the enthusiastic brothers from the band ahead of them performing a live date as they revealed to us about exciting developments in their live shows both musically and visually.

“We’ve been expanding our live lighting set-up. Tonight will be the first time we’ll be busting that out! We have a giant LED motion drape and a guy has been programming the drape to each song, and we have light-bars that look like giant light-sabres which will go with the music as well. We’re just going to continuously keep adding onto that!” Heartracer have a new single out called ‘Hollow’, which they describe as a cathartic anthem, building from a slow start to a crescendo. “By the end there’s this emotional release or breakthrough. I’m not sure if that was entirely intentional but we like the way it worked out.” Inspiration for the song came from multiple sources. Chip told us about the inspiration for his guitar working, citing Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour and British band The Alarm. “I’m a big fan of British music,” he confessed mentioning Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music as their favourites. “I’m coming to over the UK in ten days to visit friends” he revealed.

Chris expanded on the influences, referring to them listening a lot to rock band ‘The War on Drugs’. “It sounds like if The War on Drugs were a more electronic, retro band. We’re trying to keep the natural instruments alive so we brought in the acoustic guitar and Bryan’s drumming, so we think it’s turned out well.” The brothers are big fans of 1980s culture, which influences their music, mentioning

KBPS

Tears for Fears, Simple Minds and the Pet Shop Boys. In terms of favourite movies they talked about the John Hughes movies and also Chip’s large collection of 1980s horror movies. “Apparently when I was brought home as a baby he was watching Bloodsport with Jean Claude Van Damme, and that soundtrack is incredible. I found out years later that the person who wrote the script for the movie was called Christopher Crosby!” Though there will be no music video for song ‘Hollow’, there will be one for upcoming single ‘Dream Girl’, which is taken from their upcoming EP out in September called ‘Eat Your Heart Out’. “We’re working with a director called Lucas Krost, who reached out to us originally about using one of our songs – Open Door, from our ‘Summer Gold’ EP – on a short film he was making. “He’s been at the Cannes film festival. He drew up a script for the ‘Dream Girl’ video and though I don’t want to say too much about it there’s definitely a political message entwined in the love story between a girl and a guy. They’re trying to influence a senator on gun laws. As you know the United States has a pretty big epidemic now with guns. We’re trying to hardness a point in the video.”

The brothers said they weren’t political as a band, though Chris does have a Political Sciences degree. “I don’t want it to be forced. I think it can happen naturally at times. To me the gun issue isn’t even a political one it’s a rational one. When you have this many people getting shot every day, you don’t even need to have a political opinion on it, you just need to think rationally.”

Moving away to their live sound, the brothers confirmed they had a very high-energy live sound. “We do like to make it clear

The music magazine

16

that though the 80s sound influences us it’s not as much a conscious effort on our part. That’s the era that we love but we are a contemporary band, and live we’re like the Killers or Brandon Flowers, with a little 1975. It’s an upbeat show, and I think we take people on an emotional rollercoaster with some of the ballads that we do, like ‘Light of Day’ which is probably my favourite song from our first record, which is another song that starts slow and at the end it crescendos. “I get compared to the lead singer of the Pet Shop Boys a lot.”

Their upcoming EP – ‘Eat Your Heart Out’ has been completed. “It was a very meticulous effort. We thought it was going to be done much quicker than it was but we wanted it to be perfect, which it obviously never will be! We worked with Andreas on production. The core of the songs were all tracked in my home studio and then we took everything over to him and go through each sound and polish everything. He said it was the longest he’d worked on anything, and he’s done full length records, and this is just a 5-song EP. “We’ve got a tonne more songs that we’re ready to record so we’re going to get back to it as soon as we can!” We asked them if the song writing and recording process was something they enjoyed doing, an answer that was started with emphatic yes. “If you don’t enjoy that aspect of it then you probably should be in the business. There’s a lot of things in the music business that isn’t too appealing but that part and performing live are great.

“Just the song-writing for me is my favourite part. I don’t think there’s a better high for me in the world than when a song finally comes together.”

KBPS

Having access to a home studio has helped them with this process. When Chip returned from California they had a clutch of songs to work on, the recorded helped by purchasing Pro Tools. “I had no idea what I was doing, but you can see the progression from ‘In Flight’ to ‘Summer Gold’. Everything we do is self-produced for the most part so you can get an idea on how we’ve progressed with song-writing and production, and I think our fans can connect with that. They like to see our progression, that we’re not a band just shot out of the marketing test tube! I think on our newest EP you’ll hear that even more. We’re even more refined!” Looking to the future Heartracer said they’d love to come to the UK, an area that often has a bigger appreciation for live music than necessarily on their home turf.

“It can be tough over here!” Chris confessed. “Good music tends to have more success in the UK. It depends on where you go. I think it’s our sound. Every time we play people say we should be playing in Europe, playing with Coldplay or something!” Alongside their hopes with Europe we asked them about their ambitions for the future. “If there’s one thing we have it’s not a shortage of ambition. Our ambitions go way beyond what they should. We have faith in our music and we think the songs are there. To me the most fun things would be to tour Europe and play shows!”

ALL DRESSED UP

We speak to Freddie from Hunck all about their new single ‘All Dressed Up’.

Hunck are a rock band from North London who have just released their new single ‘All Dressed Up’, which is one of the songs that made it onto our August 2016 playlist. We caught up with Freddie Tyson-Brown from the band and asked him about their new release. “It’s an ode to modern dating troubles. It’s about getting dressed up and getting stood up! We’ve all been on dates where things haven’t gone right. It’s like an everyman’s song!”

The song is accompanied by a surprisingly good video considering its tight £60 budget. We asked Freddie how they managed this. “The limitations make it more exciting to do. We tried to make it as exciting as we could for as little money as possible. All we did was spend £60 on a green screen and a couple of lights, and I already had a camera. The paper mache heads were free as we just used copies of the Evening Standard which they give away free at all the tube stations for free!” The heads, you’ll be glad to know, are still with the band. “We’re saving them for a rainy day,” Freddie confessed, before admitting that if it was raining they could well just melt onto their faces! The band members have brought different influences to the record. Whilst member Thomas has a love of Frank Sinatra, Freddie

prefers Al Boley.

Hunck recently performed a headline show at the Lexington in London and it went really well. “We managed to sell it out and we had a good laugh, it was a good night!” Freddie told us about their gig, confessing their gigs are louder, faster and more in the flesh. Looking ahead, Freddie revealed that they have recorded an album’s worth of material and they hope to get this out by the end of the year. “We’ll see what happens. We’re just constantly writing new music, seeing how it goes, and then playing it out live, and seeing how people react to it.”

With reaction to the new single being positive so far, things are looking great for Hunck as a band. Looking ahead to the future Freddie would like the band to continue playing more shows and making more music and something a little bit different based on Freddie’s favourite sport. “I want to write a darts songs for the next darts season coming up at the end of the year. Hopefully we’ll have a darts number one by the end of the year when the World Championships happen. That’s my goal!”

Singles Reviewed

Here are our picks of the songs we’re sent each month

Bryan Donoghue - Girl From Memphis ‘Girl From Memphis’ is a classic, retro-sounding number that sounds like the Beatles have come back to life. With hints of Jake Bugg, but with happier vibes, this is a great throwback number. TT facebook.com/bryandonoghuemusic/ Cleopold - Down In Flames ‘Down In Flames’ is a slow, sultry number with an atmospheric production style that lifts up a few notches. T facebook.com/cleopoldmusic/ Coco feat. Protoje - Ova Here (Radio Edit) Sounding very much like your typical grime track the more pop-focussed chorus will win you over. T Dalton Deschain & The Traveling Show Freakshow / Different Constellations Pretty much two concept tracks based around an old circus freakshow, these feel like they could well have been ripped from some sort of modern musical. ‘Freakshow’ is a wacky number riffing off the familiar circus theme mixing in the sound of Royal Republic with Panic At the Disco, whereas the b-side is a more romantic, introspective number. Surprisingly fun. TTT facebook.com/DaltonDeschainMusic/ Dead Love Fear Wave - Golden Rule A calm, pondering indie-ballad but one that ticks over nicely with its marching beat, smooth vocals and gentle progression. Echo Child - Way to the Sun A suprisingly fun electro-pop number with a bouncy drum beat and fun summery vibes. Pretty addictive. TT facebook.com/echochildmusic/ Heartracer - Hollow A soothing, gentle number that builds slowly into something with a bit more bite with more guitar and drums. It takes its time, but gets there eventually and has a nice bit of heart to it. T fb.com/heartracerband/ Iron Lines - Voices Nicely produced gentle indie number with some catchy hooks, subtle piano and guitar licks and a hooky vocal line. Joyful. TT twitter.com/theironlines Jammer - Dagenham Dave Though perhaps not a huge depature from recent songs in the genre the catchiness, rhythm and cheekiness are all present and it’s a memorable listen and well worth a spin. Kids For Peace - Why Can’t We It’s for charity so we’ll give it some slack, but it’s what you’d expect from a slow choral ballad sang by some pre-tweens with some forced lyrics. T Kutiman - She’s A Revolution Mixing in a middle eastern vocal riff, ‘She’s A Revolution’ certainly has a mystical, mythical feel in its production and music. Outside of this key non-verbal hook there’s little else that grabs you in the same way, but the verses build up neatly and it’s a fun one-trick pony. T facebook.com/kutimanart/ Le Couleur - Starlite Starlite is a cool, laid back, gentle, smooth number that delivers a satisfying chill-out feel thanks to the light, wispy vocals of the lead single and the gentle jaunt of the music. TT facebook.com/lecouleurmusic/ Mavrick - The Weight With hints of John Legend and John Newman, this is a beautifully sung, produced and written number that will soar into your heart. TTT facebook.com/mavrickofficial/ 67 - 5am Vamping The weirdly titled ‘5am Vamping’ has a distinctive urban swagger that is much better than your average grime track. TT Shovels & Rope - I Know Sounding like a modern take on the glam rock of T-Rex this is a quickly catchy, singable yet gritty number with some dark, muddy retro throw-backs amongst its poppiness. DREAM OF A BAND

Northern Ireland Band ‘In An Instant’ on their new dreampop single ‘Where The Demons and The Devil Speak.’ Mark, Ryan, Andrew and Tom make up band ‘In An Instant’ and we spoke to them about their new single and how he would describe it. “It’s a bit of a change from what we’ve done before. It’s probably the most raw song and the most rock song. You can definitely hear that we’re a guitar band on it. We’re very proud of how it’s turned out. It’s incredible emotional. Most of our songs are, but it’s really gone down that route. It’s a bit different to what we’ve done which is why we’re so proud of it and pleased by the way it’s come out.

“Normally when we write a song we just play a few beats, and some different guitar riffs. With this one it just happened. The process with us is the same but we didn’t really work

with a producer on our first EP. I think that changed thing to a degree. We got a lot of his input and he did a lot on the song too. “Working with a producer to such a close degree helped on creating that sound.”

Plans based around the single release include accompanying photographs and an acoustic video. “Something that’s really raw, that shows we’re not just electronic that we can do a really mellowed down version. Then hopefully after that. we’ll maybe do a full music video depending on if we get any good ideas, and we’re thinking at the moment about ideas for the video.

“We’d love to do something acoustic or live with it because I think it will really show off the song. It’s always good to do it a different way as that’ll catch other people who maybe didn’t like the original recording as much. It’s always good to try different ways.” The band describe their music in a variety of ways. “When we started we were a very

electronic band, That was our main catch. But we’re now more indie-electronic or indie-pop.

“Pop is sometimes a dangerous word. We know we make pop music, but we’re a guitar band at heart and always will be, as that’s always how it starts. We jam and we get ideas out, and then it gets more electronic and polished.”

‘In An Instant’ are also known for their live sound, initially describing the sets as sweaty! “For me live shows are what I particularly look forward to. Recording in a studio is great but our sound is electronic. And when you can blast that backing track through huge speakers and play guitar and drums at full blast people can see what you’re really about. “When we first started people only heard the electronic backing tracks or the demos that we made, so they didn’t really understand. I remember when people came to the first show and they said they didn’t expect that. I think our live shows are a chance to show off our energy when we play. “The problem I think is capturing what we’re like live on a recording. If we can’t do a song live, we just don’t do it. Live is the really, really important thing for us with emotions running high, and that’s make or break for us. We’ve even had people cry at our gigs, which is really good!

“Sometimes people aren’t sure about how bands are going to sound live but luckily we’ve had the joy of people saying we sound better live than we do on our recordings. And we’re pretty proud of our recordings! “We always give it as much as we possibly can. We’re always exhausted and drenched after every set. [We always give] 110%.”

KBPS

Continuing to book more live dates alongside recording new tracks, it’s an exciting time for the band as they launch lots of new material. Looking ahead the band are continuing to record in the studio. “We’ve got a collection of them, putting them towards some sort of EP at the end of the summer. We think the ones we’ve got are all single worthy, with one we’re recording that’s very promising. “What we want to do now is for as many people to hear our music as possible. We’ve already got a single that’s recorded and mastered, and then we’re going to release as much music as we possibly can to reach as wide an audience as possible.

“We want everyone to hear as much music as possible, and keep the momentum going. I’d love all our songs to be received well. We’ve put so much into them musically and lyrically, it would be great to see people react to them live and keep building. “The aim for the end of the year and beyond will be to pick up more shows and play to a wider audience in places we’ve not played before. Live shows are my favourite part of being a band, playing bigger places and in different venues to show people what we’re all about.

“We’ll do all we can to make people know who we are, and impress with our live show and stand out. We’re all great live musicians and enjoy what we’re doing.”

Lewis Murphy is a pop singersongwriter from Kings Lynn and we spoike to him as he released his new single ‘Caught Up With You’, revealing it’s a new direction for him as a singersongwriter.

“I originated as a solo singer-songwriter, just me and a guitar, and this a push for me into a new genre that suits me more. I’ve always been a massive pop fan and it took me quite a while to realise it.

“I went to an Ed Sheeran gig and saw Saint Raymond performing and that’s what started me into the indie-pop genre.

“It’s a nice, up-beat summery song. It’s an upbeat and positive song, but if you listen to the lyrics it’s not quite as upbeat, which is how I like to write my songs.

SHINING LIGHT We speak to Lewis Murphy about his new EP, Lighthouse

“When you first listen to it you think it’s going to be a great positive song and he’s going to sing about something happy but when you listen to it, it’s more multi-layered with emotion in there that works well.” Lewis has been spending time recently recording a video for his latest single down at Hunstanton, with a teaser for it recently put online ahead of its release this month. “It was shot all on the beach. It’s very close to the studio that we recorded the track at, which made us want to do it there. I spent a lot of time there as a child so it’s quite an important part of my own childhood.

“It’s a performance video but keeping that positive vibe of the record,” he said, telling us about the wait to find a day nice enough to complee the recording.

The single is taken from his latest EP, and Lewis was keen to emphasise why he released a collection of songs. “I’m a student of the music industry. I spend a lot of time looking at artists that are up-and-coming and what works for them, and what things they are benefitting from.

“A good example if Lewis Watson. Before he released his first album he released a handful of EPs and that’s got him into quite a good position. He’s now onto a global scale, so I thought about heading down that route. Instead of giving people one song let’s give them a mixture of things to listen to, four songs on this EP for example, four songs on the last one and four more on the next one as part of a trilogy, to entice people, to get them imvolved, and really push my way in and develop the sound. “This EP is the most developed sound I’ve had. It’s the most accurate to what I’ve wanted to be.”

KBPS

Lewis revealed to us that ‘Caught Up With You’ was the final track he wrote for his current EP, and his favourite on the release. “It’s the most reflective of where I want to be, and it fits in with the EP really well. They’ve all got that positive indie-pop singer-songwriter vibe that you can dance to. There’s also a track on there called ‘Don’t Give Up’, which is the slower one. It’s a nice mixture of everything, but it all ties together well.”

Lewis has been performing at various gigs recently, describing his live sound as energetic. “I bounce around a lot on stage. I think it shows my passion for my own tracks. I put so much energy into singing and moving and trying to get people moving!” Following a third EP next year, Lewis next plans to pull an album together including his favourite tracks and fan-favourites from the trilogy of releases and newer material. Looking further ahead, Lewis would love to get to perform in stadiums and arenas. “A real dream of mine has always been to play the O2 in Shepherd’s Bush, London. It’s a really great venue and for me I always feel it’s a breakthrough mark. It’s where I first saw Lewis Watson and he’s now on a global scale.

“I feel like if I can reach that stage it’s the go-to place to push myself in the industry. By the end of the year we’re hoping to have a UK tour in place and getting around the country and hopefully everyone will be able to hear the new EP!”

EPs & LPs Reviewed Ward Thomas Cartwheels (LP)

though still of a similar tempo, is a much stronger number, its finger-clicking beat and Fleetwood Mac feel proving a delight. The titular track comes next, a twangy guitar-led number that once more mixes up the harmonies with stripped back production and quite down-played lyrics.

Second single ‘Guilty Flowers’ is the first time the album really hits anything resemble a quick tempo and though the lyrics are as solemn as previous tracks the music has a bit more punch and is a great single thanks to its catchy hooks and chorus. Country duo Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas return with their second album and this fourteen-track album is a delightful example of solid harmonies, touching melodies and country-pop crossovers, on an album that’s surprisingly downbeat for the pair, especially in light of the debut singles, with most songs lyrically quite dark and introspective, touching on negative aspects of love and relationships. The LP opens up with the first single ‘Carry You Home’, a lighters-out opening to the record, and one that certainly builds up from its almost acapella opening to something with much more beat, and becomes a little perkier than its initial lyrics would suggest and becomes pretty uplifting, and feels like a solid anthem to open up with. ‘Almost Easy’ again keeps things subtle and low-key, but showcases the beautiful voices of the pair. ‘Material’ which follows,

KBPS

‘Lose Me’ is one of my favourite songs on the album, its bouncy music off-setting its biting lyrics, and feels like the next single, plenty of confidence injected into the rhyming chorus and subsequent calls of the chorus. ‘Good On You’, meanwhile, starts off with a Radiohead vibe, settling firmly into ballad territory though lacking the spark found elsewhere.

‘When It’s Not Me’ has more an indie swagger to it and some great tongue-incheek lines such as ‘I Bet He Gets Laid… ies.’. One of the best tracks on the album, this sees Catherine and Lizzy on spunky form and feels like a strong change of tempo from the rest of the album, and feels like a future cut from the album. Follower ‘Boomerang’ is just as great, its funky drum riff and catchy chorus really selling the track and making this another highlight of the album. ‘Dirt and Gold’ is another strong song lyrically and musically and feels more upbeat in both respects. ‘Where the Sky

Is’ goes all Adele with its piano riff and the title-focussed chorus and gradual building up works well. ‘Proof’, is rather Simon and Garfunkel and another of my favourites on the album thanks to its gentle feeling, building harmonies and lyrical hooks. ‘Cartwheels’ wraps up with two more quieter numbers, the gentle ‘Who I’m Not’ and the introspective ‘Safe’ whose ‘you’re safe here riff’ compliments the opener well.

Ward Thomas’ follow up to 2015’s ‘From Where We Stand’ is a surprisingly quiet affair with a sustained gentle feel to it, with little of the upbeat vibe common in their previous hits like ‘Push To The Stride’, ‘A Town Called Ugley’ and ‘Guest List’ and I found myself wishing they’d kick up the pace a little bit more. The best tracks outside of the two singles are definitely ‘Love Me’, ‘When It’s Not Me’, ‘Boomerang’ and ‘Dirt and Gold’, my personal preference is when they lift the pace up. What’s on the LP has lots of heart and though the overall tone is darker and more solemn in tone and in terms of lyrics,

there’s still pleasant of passion, quality harmonies and polish within the music. TTT

The Tin Pigeons Sparks (EP)

Uppingham-based band The Tin Pigeons deliver a three-song EP that kicks off with the title track, a warm, stuttery laidback number with a smooth electronicfeeling opening that gives way to a gentle, friendly-sounding indie hit that sways and flows like a tree in a gentle wind. Second track ‘Sirens’ is the best of the trio, a folky, catchy little ditty with slurred vocals, a great sing-a-long vibe and a positive, autumnal feel that warms as it spins for just over four minutes.

The EP wraps up with the bounciest number of the three, the hook-filled 'What Would You Say If' which gets the pulse racing enough to end the extended play on a high and make you want to replay it again. TT

Dyr Faser Trio (EP) At least the industrial throb of 'Hybrid Souls' gives hint to something more but itys lyrics and music is still too drawly and repetitive for my tastes. I can admire their musicianship but it's just not my cup of tea or beer at all.

50FootWave Bath White (EP)

Hailing from Boston Dyr Faser deliver a six-track extended play of minimalistic, downbeat, almost gruff electronic numbers with lead vocals that are somnambulant in their style, play times that go well beyond five minutes on four of them and a progressive delivery that floats on over drum machine well after your attention has drifted. The energy of opener 'Den of Sables' gives way to the country slur of 'Estranged' which in turn leads into the relentless repetition of 'Don't', which sounds like someone losing the will to live over a loop that is just too short.

'Just A Face' comes in at under four minutes and utilises an echo effect to create an eerily supernatural effect but still fails to progress to anything interesting. 'Kōsō Biru’, the penultimate number, is the best on the record thanks to its more interesting production loops but again suffers from tired-sounding vocals.

KBPS

American alternative band ‘50FootWave’ hit home with this new EP of six similarly themed grungy numbers courtesy of Kristin Hersh and her gruff vocals. Stuffed full of freely crashed drums, tempo shifts and guitar licks it can be never classed as boring but its structure-less approach doesn’t sit too well with my personal tastes.

Each dark, muddly produced track blends into each other and there’s nothing really that sets one track from another. It’s high energy with plenty of guts but its a record that’s hard to like as something to be in the company of for almost twenty minutes.

Bloodhounds On My Trail - Escape II (EP)

Flying across the world from Australia, this five-track EP plus a remix by Ummagma, is a soaring, grandiose affair but one that sees the vocals of the lead singer lost in the louder instrumentals, so much so that it’s difficult to really latch on any words and instead losing the rhythm in the overpowering music. Mixing up the tempos and styles, there is some variety to the EP and my favourite track is ‘She’s In My Plans’, but it’s hard to really enjoy a piece when the whole thing is so muddy with its producton.

Perhaps in someone else’s hands it would have more life; in this form it just comes across as flat and too confused.

The Veldt - The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur (EP)

The Veldt and their intriguingly titled EP is a much more fun affair than the music so far reviewed. Simple, electronic fare, it begins with the soaring majesty of ‘Sanctified’ which feels like a 90s slowdance number than has somehow headed to the future.

Though there’s not really much else on the collection that stands up next to this smooth, atmospheric opener we get a selection of cool, chill-out numbers such as ‘A Token’ and ‘One Day Out of Life’. Sounding a little like Royksopp on a day off, the fifth track ‘And It’s You’ has a bit more guitar guts to it and is the next best number on the piece.

‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’ will not particularly shock you into alertness, but it’s a relaxing enough listen. T

Haley Bonar Impossible Dream

‘Impossible Dream’ is a fun listen with a collection of toe-tapping tracks. There’s no real big killer track but it’s one of the better albums landing in my inbox this month. T

The Foreign Resort The American Dream

Haley Bonar is an alternative artist from Saint Paul and this ten track LP is a gentle exploration of great, relaxing music with crisp production value that lets her voice shine. Opener ‘Hometown’ confirms this, taking a gentle acoustic-guitar led number and fleshing it out.

‘Your Mom is Right’ adds a bit more of a driving pace to the record whilst ‘Kismet Kill’ cranks the tempo even more and is one of the highlights of the album. ‘I Can Change’ returns to something a little slower and a little unremarkable whilst ‘Stupid Face’ goes a little KT Tunstall and is my favourite song on the album.

‘Calling You Queen’ is a rockier affair, whilst ‘Jealous Guys’ rattles along with electronic eccentricity. ‘Skynz’ and ‘Better Than Me’ continues the theme, with the latter one of the best on the album. Closer ‘Blue Diamonds Fall’ ends on a high note with a real catchy jaunty number.

KBPS

This five-track EP from Danish punk-rock band The Foreign Resort is a high-energy, high-octane album as opener ‘The New Blood’ showcases, the lyrics buried heavily by fast paced drum machines and relentless electronica.

‘Suburban Depression’ is a crisper number with initially a cleaner electronic feel before getting a little darker once more, but a little less over-powering. ‘Onto Us’ is more of the same with more, increasingly grungey, guitar, and electronic bleeps and bloops like an SOS call going out of control. ‘Under Bright Neon Stars’ kicks off with more drum machine and is more palatable in its difference and feels the most accessible of the numbers, whilst lengthy closer ‘Skyline/Decay’ with its peaceful opening and gracious merge into something rockier and grandiose feels like the best track on the piece by far. Interesting and grungey, though lacking in enough variety until the final track, and even then the vocals feel overly cloaked. T

‘Lost Songs Vol. 1’ is an exciting new concept headed up by Alun Davis to release music that might not normally have been released. We spoke to him about this exciting venture. “The concept came about because [we felt] that there must be a raft of great songs that had been written over the years which for one reason or another never saw the light of day, that are in effect lost, withering on the vine and getting nowhere. But we all know that some of these songs could be great songs, so why shouldn’t we find them?

“Lost Songs is all about finding these songs and getting them out to a much wider audience so everyone can enjoy them! It’s a really simple philosophy. Out there are great songs; let’s find them!” Alun was inspired by his own experiences of having songs that didn’t progress. “I think it’s a great idea to give a song a chance, and to see if the singer-songwriter could build a career around it. It’s the single song we’re after.” Commenting on how one song - John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ for instance - can

capture the mood, Alun came across as incredible passionate about the project. “You get great artists, great voices and great instrumentalists. But where does it all begin? It starts with the song. You could get fifty people to sing fifty different versions but it always starts with the song. “Sometimes you forget about that. But we don’t want to! We wanted to find the best sixteen and put them on an album and we did it!”

With submissions coming in for a second volume of ‘Lost Songs’, the project certainly has legs and is producing great material.

Alun spoke to us about the submissions they receive for the project, with tracks coming in in various states. “Sometimes they’re not the greatest singers but we don’t really care about that. We’re not looking for great singers - there are shows for that. What we’re interested in is the song.

“We have had a panel of experts from the industry who have listened to the songs to cut through to the basic song. And at the end out come the best songs. “The sixteen songs are like our babies, waving them off into the real world. And I wish them well! We’ve done our part and we hope they shine.”

The songs have come from various sources. Alun told us about bedroom singersongwriters and buskers discovered on the street. He spoke about how the songs on the album can appeal to different people, comparing his experience with his children’s and how they each picked different favourites from the album. “It’s hard to speak for other people, but for me there are five-or-

KBPS

six really great songs on there and up there with anything you hear on radio.”

The reaction from those involved in the project has been great. “They’ve been thrilled with it. It was a chance for them to get their song to a wider publicity. There are some nice words from them on our website. “It also gave them the chance to get into a recording studio where some greats have been recorded, where Queen or Will.I.Am recording. [The artists] were walking in their footsteps and that’s a thrill in itself!” As well as listening to the first volume, budding musicians of lost songs can submit a song for volume two via lostsongs.com. “I do think if you have a great song, there’s no excuse. Send it in! We want to hear it!”

Alun also told us about his excitment about receiving new music each day for the next volume. “The whole concept has been really exciting to be involved with. We can build on Lost Songs vol. 1 and the publicity is really building. “The word gets out there really easily once there’s something to talk about! This is a chance to make a difference for new musicians.”

With Alun’s own music as Ticking Tree keeping him busy, he continues to look forward to new music each day through the Lost Songs project.

CREAM OF THE CROP We speak to Marie Parie about her new single ‘Ice Cream’.

Barbie doll and the prince.” The video, for which there is a teaser currently up online, should be available nearer the end of September after everyone gets back away from the typical holidays of August.

With her anime-style appearance and quirky, catchy music, it’s difficult to not be wowed by French-American singer Marie Parie, whose electro-pop number ‘Ice Cream’ prepares to land in September. We caught up with the singer in La Rochelle the day after some of her songs got an exciting performance at a very special DJ night to ask her about her new single. “It’s a fun song for people who get stressed out, to unwind, listen to and dance to. In Texas they say ‘Ass Cream’ (because of the pronunciation) so that’s where it came from. It’s the cultural shock of hearing the Texas accent!” A summery track, the reception to ‘Ice Cream’ has been great. “People love it – kids, adults, everybody – because it’s very fun. Even the video is very fun with the futuristic

KBPS

Sticking with the visual side of Marie Parie’s music, we talked about her description of herself as an artistic alien. “That is a very interesting one! The alien is a reference to creating an identity for all the people who do not belong in a lot of places, and creating a space for them to feel safe and identify themselves, and believe in themselves, and do things beyond what their environment dictates.

“And that’s what I want to do as well. We all have this alien in ourselves, but we all can do miracles.” Marie Parie is very influenced by Japanese anime and manga, shown in the promotion across her website and social media, which is something she has a big love for. “Manga always have these stories that are so touching, and a lot of them are from real life. Anyone can relate to a lot of it, but there’s also the fantastic, and futuristic, touches and I love that.

“As a child people always used to call me Barbie so at first it was annoying but now I’m playing with it, so I’m making a futuristic Barbie!”

With a French background to Marie Parie, this has an impact on how her music sounds. “I blend the two cultures together. For example dating was a cultural shock in the American system. Ice cream is a cultural shock about the Texan accent. Basically I put the two cultures together to create a fun song, but behind it there’s something that touches on society and the art of living.” Marie Parie is working on a longer LP called ‘Blue Kiss’ which, appropriately, has songs of different flavours to that of ‘Ice Cream’. “It’s still dance and pop-dance, but I have a ballad as well. Some have Spanish flavours and influences on them, and one is Russian. It’s diverse!” she told us, referencing all the different cultures feeding into the record. “You have to listen carefully to know that I’m doing that. At first you just hear dance music and themes, but that’s what I do.”

A release date has yet to be set for the ‘Blue Kiss’ album as Marie Parie is hitting the promotional circuit for the single, enjoying strong chart positioning and new appearances on television and elsewhere in the media, including several American radio stations. The promotional work has also seen Marie Parie performing live around Los Angeles, and she hopes to tour in Europe later in the year. But what about other future ambitions? “I can’t wait to drop the new single and I already have other singles and projects I’m working on, and I can’t wait to announce those!”

Blossoms Blossoms

This is the self-titled debut from Stockport Indie band Blossoms and it’s a self-assured albun of just over forty minutes. The 12 track LP kicks off with their breakthrough track the synth hefty ‘Charlemagne’ with an opening riff, catchy chorus and lyrical structure that pretty much starts the album off with a burst of energy, with its singable hook immediately recognisable. ‘At Most A Kiss’ which follows is in many ways just as noteworthy, its 70s-style glam and driving rhythm just as foot-tapping. ‘Getaway’ completes the solid opening trilogy, it’s hook of ‘I’m over you / get under me’ kicking off a really great vibe and power from what is a slower song.

The electronic vibe continues to flow through songs such as ‘Honey Sweet’ which is more ballad in style, whilst ‘Onto Her Bed’ offers something a little more light-weight and ethereal. One of my least favourites on the album they do at least try something different as the song fades out

The music magazine

39

before the end, as if someone fell asleep on the sliders. ‘Texia’ is a fun little number, like many of the tracks bridging the gap nicely between indie, pop and electronica. ‘Blown Rose’ dips its toe back into a firm retro sound, its chorus singing about stately homes sounding like a live sing-a-long favourite.

Bat For Lashes The Bride

‘Smashed Pianos’ is another less noteable number but doesn’t quite feel like unnecessary filler thanks to another great chorus and production values.

‘Cut Me and I’ll Bleed’, the first song I heard from them, is immediately recognisable from its opening riff and by the time you get to the end of the first run-through of the bouncy Verve-like chorus you’ll be hooked. ‘My Favourite Room’ sees the band go a little Oasis-y with an acoustic-like, stripped-back number and is a tasty little piece but doesn’t quite reach the heady heights of its neighbours, lacking any real direction.

The penultimate song ‘Blow’ is a middle of the road track that bumbles along nicely before ‘Deep Grass’, the longest track on the album, wraps things up with a dirty swagger that brings the piece to a gritty, nicely produced ending.

Many artists would be proud of this album and to have Blossoms produce this as their first LP is a huge achievement. With half of the album definite indie-electronic bangers there’s much to enjoy here and even if the album does fade out with a whimper after starting with a bang it doesn’t detract from the clutch of singles and top album tracks that are must listens. TTT

KBPS

Now onto something a little more eccentric over forty-seven minutes. The fourth album from Natasha “Bat For Lashes” Khan is an atmospheric, dramatically produced piece that takes the eccentricity of Florence and the Machine and wraps in it something a bit less tangible. Opening with the harp-fuelled stripped back ‘I Do’ - all high-vocals and drama - we then get something a little more expected in the dark and stormy ‘Joe’s Dream (Don’t Say Goodbye)’ which continues the lyrical theme of marriage, as suggested by the title. ‘In God’s House’ brings a bit of throbbing electronica to the mix and some shifts in style, with some multi-layered riffs bleeding through, eschewing choruses for style. ‘Honeymooning Alone’ goes a bit sixties and filmic, with a dramatic, almost monochromatic, style, with no sign of anything conventional in the layout. ‘Sunday Love’ which follows is easily the

40

best number on the album, its bouncing intro and slow build giving way for a catchy, delighful chorus that mixes darker percussion with lighter harp work.

Weird A Long Period of Blindness

In contrast ‘Never Forgive the Angels’ is a little more subdued, its cut back opening of 45-seconds leading to something pretty pedestrian and more ethereal at the end. At least the soaring ‘Close Enounters’ which follows improves things with its soaring and dramatic ballad.

Never afraid to keep things fresh, ‘Widow’s Peak’ is more like a piece of spoken word poetry than a song, but offers something a little refreshing and is one of my favourites on the piece. Entering the final third of the album ‘Land’s End’ is slow, meandering and bland whilst ‘If I Know’ is a more soothing, reassuring ballad.

‘I Will Love Again’ and ‘In Your Bed’ flow into one another to complete the album and gently wrap things up.

Bat For Lashes’ fourth album is a gentle affair, almost the perfect CD to put onto relax. Outside of ‘Sunday Love’ and ‘Widow’s Peak’ not much pokes its head above the parapet of variety but it’s a gentle, involving listen held together by stripped-back production values and Khan’s delightful voice. TT

When it comes to listening to this album I’m not sure if it’s a Long Period of Blindness or a long LP of very similar tracks. With a great tracks hitting forty minutes, each song on here fails to really assemble its own identity, each one surrendering its vocals to an overloud cacophany of music, drowing out the vocals in guitars and I’m afraid to say I gave up seven tracks in, unable to really get a hold of anything that wasn’t just the same style over and over again. Sorry. Too Weird for my tastes.

SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE Pure Youth on their big new single

Dave Hibbert. Oliver Lyu. Elliott Liu and Duncan Brookfield make up London-based indie band ‘Pure Youth’. We spoke to Duncan from the group about their new single ‘Other Side’, a song they describe as mature. “It’s kind of a step-up in quality and songwriting from our last stuff. The lyrics really explore the theme of wanting to get away from everything. The music and the way the track builds reflects that.”

The brainchild of singer Dave Hibbert and guitarist Elliot Liu, the inspiration came from various experiences. “It’s an amalgamation of all the things that have happened to us in the past.”

Describing the band as electronically-tinged indie-rock, Duncan talked about the band’s love for synthesizers as well as the more traditional drums and guitars. “We like to take it a little further. Even if it’s an acoustic sound we like to manipulate it and play around with sounds to make something people have never heard before.”

With plans to release three more singles over the next few months Pure Youth are in it for the long game. “They all sound different and display emotions in different ways but they’ve all got this running commentary behind them. The songs all really work well together and we’re excited to get them out to people and hear their thoughts on them.”

“We’re hoping to do something special with the artwork so when they all come together we’ll be able to bundle them together.

around with the arrangement and give it more of a live feel.

The journey of Pure Youth as a band has been a good one so far. “We all met each other in different ways. I went to school with Oliver the bassist, Oliver goes to University with Elliot and Elliot and Dave met through mutual friends on different musical projects.

“But we’re always incorporting new things; we’ve got new technologies, new songs and new techniques, and the live set is always improving and changing, which is really good. I think live sets should always be doing that!”

“An album is a while away yet. We’ve still got a lot to learn and we need to push ourselves and explore new things before we sit down to do an album, but we’re one step closer with every song.”

“Oliver brought us together and it’s been really nice to meet the other guys and I’m happy to say they’re my best friends now, and it’s really good to go through that journey with people you understand and respect.

“We’re getting closer as the days go by and I’m exciting to see where it goes. They’re such amazing and talented guys.”

Describing the band as ‘very, very loud’, Duncan told us about their live sound. “We like to open the tracks a little more and play

KBPS

“We’re quite controlled and orchestrated in the studio and we like to arrange the tracks as such, but when we go live we get carried away a bit and push the music a bit more, and sing-a-long and connect, and there’s no better way to play music than that.

Though no live dates cemented yet, Duncan hopes for more gigs soon so they can play to new faces. with plans for new dates. Looking to the future, the band hopes to have some new tracks to work with. “You can’t evolve as a band without new music so there’ll be lots of writing, producing and recording, with maybe some videos.”

We talk to the band about new single ‘Johnny Cash’

Hannah Huntley, James Lynch and Peter Erik make up Los Angeles country band The SLVR Tongues who have recently released their debut single ‘Johnny Cash’. Speaking to the three members of the band via a call that spanned the globe, we got to find out more about the song, the band and future plans. “Things are going really well with our first single and first video release,” Hannah told us. “We’re excited about that. We’re getting new fans and a lot of people are being really supportive and sharing our song in ways we never expected.”

“I think it’s doing better than we expected,” Peter told us. “But we’re really excited about how it will continue to grow over the next few months and we’re grateful to everybody who has viewed and commented on it.”

Having looked around their social media we were intrigued by a picture they shared recently of a cake with a Pikachu on it. Naturally we had to find out more and James told us. “I was having a party that friends had thrown for me and that cake just came out of nowhere to surprise me!”

Describing their single, Peter told us how the single was designed to be country and rocky but not following the stereotypical lyrics. “Not singing about cornfields and all of that. We tried to make it contemporary and more legitimate, and having lyrics that would matter more and have a bit of swing to them. “We’re both influenced by Nashville and LA,” he added, as Hannah confirmed that ‘Johnny Cash’ was only the second song they wrote together. “We got together and started writing a couple [of songs] and that track just poured out of us. It’s pretty catchy so we went with it!”

KBPS

When it came to the band forming, Hannah and James, who are both from Los Angeles, met at a bar on the Sunset strip called ‘Saddle Ranch’. “We were both drunk actually. Hannah was singing karaoke and I heard she had a good voice, and we wanted to jam beforehand, but I wasn’t sold on working with people, but after that we started writing. “Peter is the international man of travel and excess and sexual mystery! He was visiting Los Angeles as he was studying at the musician’s institute at the time in Hollywood. He came into the bar too and that’s how we met. “We realised we needed a lead guitar and that’s where Peter came in, and that’s how the SLVR Tongues formed.”

Alongside the song there is also a video out for ‘Johnny Cash’, set in an American Diner initially and moving on from there. But what was it like to make? “It was pretty hot to say the least. I think we all agree now never to record a music video in the desert in July. That was a very bad decision from our side! It’s a pretty nice experience wearing tight leather pants and all that at 46-degreeCelsius!

“Aside from shooting those hot scenes it was so fun! It was great fun to work with the professional team and then seeing the vision coming together; that was pretty cool to see as it worked out. It was a lot of fun!”

Though the band confessed they couldn’t tell me much about future plans due to secrecy (“We can’t tell you too much as I’d have to kill you” promised Hannah) but they revealed they’d been in the studio. “We’ve recorded a couple new songs and we are so excited about them. We’ve recorded them in the studio here and we’re still working on the

release plan, but we’ll definitely be releasing something in the new year.” Time in the studio has been great for the band. “Our producer Jordan is from Los Angeles, and he flew out to Nashville. Even though we’re all over the world at the moment we’re all Nashville based and he’s been out for the last month or so.

“We have turned the entire second floor of our house into a recording studio and we’ve been knocking out these tracks and working on them every day.” Having access to the studio has been helpful to the band. “It’s been more efficient as we just have to walk upstairs!”

The recording has been quite transatlantic, with Hannah based in Nashville and James in LA but Peter in Stockholm. “We managed to record our parts while we were there; now it’s just time for Hannah to record her own parts. Having a studio in our home means we can work as effectively as we want.” I was keen to know if the different backgrounds of the band members helped influence their sound. “I think that’s actually the coolest part of our music,” Hannah answered. “We all have personally different tastes in what we listen to and with having different backgrounds and entirely different personalities, when we find that sweet-spot and combine them all you come out with something really cool, and that’s what I feel we were lucky enough to stumble upon.

“Being in Nashville hasn’t changed our sound at all; it’s just a really cool place and we have a great band house. It doesn’t matter where we are for the sound; the sound is the three of us.” The SLVR Tongues have some local gigs

coming up in the Nashville area and then hopefully more. “There will be tours, I promise you. But everything’s still very preliminary as far as putting on a really great show and great production, and it’s still in the works to make sure that happens, but it’s next on the agenda for us.”

Returning to their single I asked them about whether they were fans of Johnny Cash and if they got to see him perform before his death over a decade ago. Though seeing him was a negative response there was a love for the artist. “Johnny Cash will always be an image for a lot of people. He’ll always be that bad boy. He’ll always be an influence for anything to do with attitude and fashion, and a lot of people can relate to it,” Peter told us. We ended the interview with asking them about big ambitions for the future.

“First of all it’s establishing ourselves and making the music that we think is the best in the world, and make the world understand that! And then going out on tour, and releasing our album,” Peter told us.

“I think it’ll be good to establish our presence more so we don’t have to wait in line at bars anymore!” quipped Hannah. “And have to tell people what we like and what we drink. That would really smooth out a lot of transitions in my life! But seriously we’re super excited to share our music with people and hopefully they like it as much as we do!” James wanted to get the band on the road. “I really love performing and I really think we could put on a dynamite show with the songs we’re currently writing. I think ‘Johnny Cash’ is a really great live song that they can get invested in and sing-a-long to. Hopefully we can be touring with some really great acts in the very near future. That’s my biggest hope!”

HIGH SOCIETY

We chat to Lew from the Society about their new single ‘Begging’. The Society are an exciting new indie-pop band from the North West, made up of Harry, Lew, Tayte & Jason. We got a chance to speak to lead guitarist Lew Whalley ahead of the release of their debut single ‘Begging’ which is available to pre-order now, with a release date of September 16th. Our first question was, of course, what the single is like. “It’s a new direction for us,” Lew told us. “Over the years we’ve been more of a classic guitar-driven indie band, but with this song we thought we’d draw on some pop influences. “Over the years myself and Harry especially have bene influenced by pop artists, even

dance music to a degree, so we thought we’d try and mix that in as well!”

The idea behind this change of direction came naturally to them. “We went into the studio with an idea. When we first took Begging into the studio it was more guitardriven than it is on the final recording. We started playing with different ideas, playing with a bit of synth to see how that sounds, change the guitar a bit, and tied it into the drum more, and the bass is driving it as well.

“It’s quite dance-inspired, drawing on stuff we’ve heard from years ago, Clubland even. We mixed a lot of ideas together in the studio and that was the result.”

Lyrically the song was written mostly by Harry, and Lew told us it comes across as a love song but with more of a beat to it. “If you listen to the lyrics it’s a tale of heartbreak, relationships not working out, that sort of thing.” Visually the single is accompanied by promo shots of the band which involve flares. Taken in Lew’s home town of Wigan, not far from his house, we were keen to find out more about this shoot. “It was my idea. I said let’s get outside, do something a bit different as opposed to the standard stood-against-thewall staring-into-the-camera sort of thing.

“Harry came up with the flare idea. We’re both big into football and bands like the Courteeners, and obviously when you go to one of their gigs and at football matches there are flares everywhere. It was an idea we had kicking around and we tied it into the shoot.” A video for Begging is due soon but there’s still footage to be collected, with the plan being to get some live shots from the band’s upcoming gig at Manchester’s Soup Kitchen, with the video appearing hand-in-hand with the song’s release later this month. “It will give us a bit more exposure online.” With their live date mentioned we wanted to know what the band’s live sound was like compared to their studio work. “There’s not as much electronic stuff with the live performance, at least not yet. We have plans to include more of that but at the moment it’s just two guitars, bass and drums. We’re trying to grow our influences, to introduce more pop aspects so each song isn’t just a guitar-led indie track. Begging is the poppiest song we’ve got at the moment.

KBPS

“We’ve still got various songs that are still quite guitar-driven, but more that are popinspired with a jangly sound. It’s actually quite a diverse set at the moment so we’re looking forward to playing it live!”

Looking forward to the gig and making it something “people will remember for a long time”, the band are also getting involved with a project called Musicians Against Homelessness which will see them performing soon at the Live Room. “That’s been organised for quite a while. Obviously it’s a great cause that we’re happy to be involved with. It’s a cracking little venue, the line-up looks brilliant, and it has been organised by some great people from Northern Exposure. As soon as we got asked we were well up for that one!”

Looking ahead to the future, there are plans for an album release around this time next year. Another track has been recorded but is currently being tweaked and mastered, and this may become a single. “We’re going to wait until we get the new mix back, see how that sounds, and take it from there. If not we’ll get back into the studio and record new things. “It’s just working towards that album next year, getting as much studio time under our belt. Get some nice new songs recorded for the album!”

For future ambitions Lew hopes for the song to be picked up by even more radio stations. “We’re looking towards a big break where somebody will pick the song up, and it’ll take off from there. There’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes with promotion. My personal goal is to get the song heard by as many people as possible!”

GOT THE SPARK The Tin Pigeons on their new EP

The Tin Pigeons are a five-piece indie-folk band from the East-Midlands and as they release their new EP ‘Sparks’ we got to speak to lead singer, and guitarist, Fraser, about their music, catching up with them after they had just performed at Leeds and Reading, a time he described as a lot of fun. “It was quite special with a lot of memories!” Describing the band’s live sound, Fraser chose indie-folk with influences from Bombay Bicycle Club and Two Door Cinema Club. “It’s quite summery,” he told us, pointing to those bands as inspirations for the band.

Talking about their new EP Fraser confirmed it was a long time coming. “It took a lot of work. I think it’s quite summery, and it means a lot to us!” Reception to the EP has been very positive, something he described as humbling, talking about the band’s recent appearances on BBC Introducing as brilliant. “It was really special to be under their wing.”

KBPS

Talking about folk music, I was intrigued to know why Fraser thought its popularity was increasing. “I think it’s just a change to what’s on the radio all the time. People just want to listen to something different to what’s in the charts.”

The Tin Pigeons are looking to return to the studio at Christmas to record new material for a potential new EP, and possibly an album in a year. They also hope for a new video to go with their next extended play. Looking ahead to the next six months, Fraser hopes the band will just keep doing what they are doing. “Just being able to make music is a lot of fun, so if we can keep doing that then it’s great!”

SOUND OF THE URBANGROUND

We speak to Chidi & Chinwe about their brand new single ‘Angels of the Urbanground’. Identical sisters Chidi and Chinwe Adilih are Toochi and they’ve just released their exciting new single ‘Angels of the Urbanground’, and we got the chance to speak to them recently about the new track, a song that has had a great reaction so far and one they’re really excited about. Fresh from recording their afrobeatsthemed next single, we spoke to them about their current one. “The song’s about being the best version of yourself, and being nice to other people. It’s

got a summery feel and we’re just trying to be angels behind urban settings.” This positive message comes through during the writing of the music. “We always try to put our experiences into the songs and we want our songs to be motivational and inspirational and to put a smile into the songs!”

The duo’s creative vision led them to Bansky’s Bristol to record the video for the single, much of the action set against a grafitti backdrop. “Bristol was the perfect city to portray the

urben setting. We went there with our dance crew. It was the perfect place to shoot the video!”

Though they sadly didn’t bump into Bansky during the shoot, they did praise the city for its energy.

Taken from their third album ‘Back2Front’, Toochi confessed it has been a labour of love to record. “It covers our journey in the music industry where we literally did everything back to front. The album is our way of describing our journey so far.” Alongside the more traditional releases, Toochi’s music has been picked up on television and films, including interest from Disney. “We’re working with some very strong production houses and brands. We’re very happy that people are picking up on us as singer-songwriters and grateful that our music is getting out there.

“We’re happy to have the experience of working with other women in the industry, and the opportunities are all fabulous.” With a festival under their belt earlier in the summer, Toochi told us they were keen to do more. “Festivals are always great,” they buzzed. “Everyone’s relaxed and fun and you can let your hair down. We’ve got a lot more lined up so people can look out for us. We’re going to bring the summer to the winter months!”

KBPS

Toochi describe their live sound as “high energy”. “There’s lots of dancing, lots of choreography, it’s very fun and energising, and I hope we get people on their feet dancing alongside us!”

Toochi, who moved down to the capital from Glasgow, praised the East London music scene. “It’s such a diverse city that gives us a great outlet for our creativity. We’re part of the tapestry of the London and really happy to be representing the independent side. “We came down to London and it’s a very competitive market place but it does make you rise to the challenge as there are lots of talented people around us. We’re grateful that we can work with some great people. The London scene is emerging and its great to be part of that.”

Looking ahead to the next six months, Toochi would dream about collaborating with other artists, such as Will.I.Am or Calvin Harris. “We have lots of plans coming up. We have an EP coming out so we’ll be launching that just before Christmas, whch will be a nice synopsis of our music.” “We’ve got a lot of gigging next year too so there’s lots in pipeline for us. We’re always looking for the next project to work on!”

SINGING FOR ENGLAND

We relive the Euros by speaking to the Turner Brothers about their football-themed single

Patrick and Anthony Turner are feel-good duo The Turner Brothers who earlier in the summer released their football anthem ‘Build Us A Dream’. Though England failed to capitalise on the championships, being knocked out by a rejuvinated Icelandic team, the song was still something to enjoy as we spoke to them about it. “We wanted a song to capture the spirit of the nation and get behind the team,” they told us ahead of the knock-out earlier in the year. Inspiration for the song came from a dream that Anthony had. “We were around at Roy Hodgon’s sister’s house - she’s our auntie. There we talked a lot about football and it seaped into the unconcious and Anthony had a dream about England winning the Euros with the crowd singing the song, and he was humming it.

“We laughed about it and a couple of days went by, and we decided to do something about it, hence ‘Build Us A Dream’.” At the time of the interview then England Manager Roy Hodgson had not heard the song, naturally as he was a little busy at the time. “Maybe the fans can sing the song to him from the stands.”

Sadly the dream didn’t come true for England, and speaking to the band ahead of the Iceland match they said beating the team “was a cert”, showing the underdog’s victory was a surprise.

At the time the brothers hoped the song, in wake of the Brexit vote especially, could help unite the country behind a common cause. “Like Three Lions did, [then] it felt like we were together. I think it’s time to stick together and be strong again.” The video for ‘Build Us A Dream’ was recorded on the day of the first England game. “We thought it was now or never. We managed to cut together the sequence and get it out in time

KBPS

for the first game.

“It was recorded in our local pub where we watch all the games. We had no camera operator there; we just stuck it on the table. We drank a pint and sang the song with a couple of locals watching!”

The duo told us that the pub was the ideal place to film a music video! Continuing the other worldly theme of the dream, the band also had a psychic say that England would win if the song was released, which sadly didn’t come true.

Away from the football-themed song we were keen to know more about the duo’s general sound. “It’s all uplifting ska-reggae, with a little bit of indie and drum and bass. A bit of fusion.” Suggesting the reggae-themed ‘Lay Low’ as another song to hear, the band have more tracks on YouTube like ‘White Socks’. The band have also had live success, with them being voted as the best live act two years running at the Hogsozzle festival. “That was fantastic as there are so many great bands down there. We’re definitely a party band. We like to keep it upbeat and fun. We have a brass section as there are a good eight of us [in the full band]. “The band brings such high energy and they’re such talented musicians. It’s really worth seeing us live. People comment on how our music trascends live.”

You can find out more about their live dates on their social media sites.

WE ARE Z Ahead of the single launch for ‘Goldigaz’ we speak to Gabby from We Are Z about their new material We Are Z are an indie-pop band with members from London, Paris and Toulouse who have a new single out called ‘Goldigaz’ on the 30th September on the same day as a launch party at Cargo in Shoreditch, London.

different places. “For example you go and play in Russia and you end up in a club with really rich people that don’t know what to do with all the power they have, and it’s really inspiring to be around people like that!”

“It’s a song about money and what we do with money, all the thing that comes with the idea of money. It describes the world of finance and drugs and, in a way, all the negative things that can come with it.”

“Maybe! Why not?” he told us before moving on to talk about the themes of decadence in the song’s video.

Here at KBPS we spoke to member and lead singer Gabriel “Gabby” Cazes and began be asking him to describe the new single.

The song takes inspiration from recent events and stories from people they have met in

With the band’s press release boasting them to be an ideal band for a post-Brexit world, I asked them if they would be flying the flag for Europe.

“It’s like the film Wolf of Wall Street. I think there’s an idea behind the decadence that comes with the idea of money. Of course we can’t do anything without money so we have to

deal with it; it’s the fight between these things.” Making the video for ‘Goldigaz’ was, according to Gabby ‘crazy’ but fun to make, like a twoday party. “We did a collaboration with two Icelandic directors who came to Paris and we did two days of crazy shooting in some houses and outside Paris, and for the occasion we dressed up as pimps and we put on wigs and make-up and we brought fake Chinese music to throw around. “[The video] is quite colourful and really extreme and it was really intense, the whole experience.”

Listening to the music of ‘We Are Z’ makes it clear that they have a wide range of influences. “We all come from different places in terms of music. From my side I was raised in France so I listened to a lot of French music like Serge Gainsbourg and then I started to listen to rhythm and blues [at quite a young ago], American bands and roots, black music and then a phase of jazz music, and then I started to listen to some seventies rock and roll! “I have modern influences too. I really like Damon Albarn and all the different projects he does, but you can always recognise his sound, and I’d love to achieve something like that, being recognisable but with influences.”

‘We Are Z’ are working now on their new album called ‘Z Is Not X’. Gabby gave us an update on the project. “We’ve finished with all the songs and we’re in the mixing process and trying to find the visuals, which I like to work on. It’s like being pregnant, and that the child is going to come in a few weeks and you have to be ready for it, and you want it to be really great. But it’s really exciting. It’s our first album and we think it’s going to be great!” With the album out at the start of November, the band are taking part in a 25-date tour with Detroit rockers Electric Six in the same month,

KBPS

which came about through a meeting with the band’s tour manager. “He really liked us and he said if we want to do it it’s hear for us. We said yes, totally. We actually opened for them in Islington last year and it went very well, so we are excited to do this tour. “It’s going to be the biggest tour we have done so far, so it’s going to be very intense and exciting!”

Describing the band’s live sound as ‘very lively’, Gabby said the live versions make their songs even more dynamic. “We put on a show, with costumes on stage, and we really try to grab the crowd and make people dance. We like to make it happen! “All the subjects of the songs are quite heavy, observational songs about the human zoo, so we want to party on those heavy subjects. When you come to a show, you’ll be jumping around and seeing us going crazy and throwing fake money at the crowd, and big explosions!” Looking ahead, the band are keen to continue doing more touring and perhaps festivals next summer and touring Europe. “We’ll be writing songs, meeting the crowds, being inspired, doing great songs and great shows. The live experience is really important to us, and we just want to tour a lot!”
