Australian born Hayden Calnin is following up part one of his ‘Cut Love’ album with the second part, also released as a special double album. Singing, writing and producing, Calnin is a talented musician who describes his sound as a soundscape, like the background music you’d hear in a movie. With the title track taken from the album out now, he single he says best resembled what you can expect from the full album, we spoke to him about his careers. Hayden Calnin studied film at University and was inspired by composers, of whom he’s a big fan, composers such as John Williams and Howard Shaw. “I stay true to my influences”, he told us.

Calnin has seen his music appearing in many mediums, most recently as the music to the UK trailer for the Oscar nominated ‘Room’. “I was stoked about that. It was quite a surprise. I never thought a trailer let alone a movie would pick up the song, so that was great news!” “One time I was watching a show in Australia, which was a reasonably big show over here though nothing on a global scale, and it popped up on there. I didn’t know that was happening, and that was surprising but was cool.”

MAKING THE CUT We speak to Hayden Calnin about parts one and two of his new album ‘Cut Love’

video with a dancer from the UK, Lukas McFarlane. “He was in the country. We’d been talking about a few collaboration ideas and it was about time we met, and we went out to shoot the video in the beautiful forests of Victoria in Australia. It’s turned out really fantastic!”

Part one of Hayden Calnin’s album ‘Cut Love’ was recorded by the artist in his own studio, and he describes it as stripped back and reflective of the single, but the second part saw Calnin work with Sydneybased Tim Carr from Studios 301. “It’s a whole different feel,” he told us, “But it’s still songs about similar themes and similar subjects, so I thought I’d package it together. Two very different sounding sides, but one big package!” The two-part album came from a long writing process undertaken by Calnin as he worked between the studio and in his spare time. “I just kept it going, and I thought why not put out everything?”

Helped with the freedom of his own studio allowed the album to breathe. “I hate the pressure of being in a studio and having a set amount of days or hours to get something done, whereas at home if you can’t get in the mood for something you can always do it the next day, but you don’t have that luxury in the studios these days.” The single ‘Cut Love’ has also spawned a

KBPS

Calnin’s music has gone full circle, having originally been approached to make music to accompany choreography. “When I’m writing or recording my music I’m trying to picture something in my head along with it so when you do see it with visuals, it certainly brings something out that people may miss when just listening to it.” Positive about the music scene in Australia, declaring his base of Melbourne the musical centre of the country. “I’m really lucky to be here; they’ve got a really strong community and everyone supports each other. It’s not a massive city, there’s only four-or-five million here. All the musicians stick together, and know each other, and work together. I love it here, and it’s much more exciting than other places in Australia. Melbourne’s perfect for the sort of thing I’m doing.” Hayden Calnin is now working on plans for an Australian tour before hopefully heading overseas before the end of the year.

‘Cut Love Part 1’ is available now, with ‘Cut Love Part 2’ out soon.

ALISTAIR PROUDMAN EU Must Be Joking Unfortunately, the print deadline this month has fallen just the wrong side of Record Store Day. While you will be reading this after the 16th of April, at the time of writing the event is yet to happen, leaving me unable to report back on the mad scramble for the couple of releases I’m after from this year’s catalogue. So, what to talk about in the meantime? Well we could discuss the turmoil of Bpoplive, a festival set up by the leave campaign for the EU referendum, which is haemorrhaging acts as its status is revealed (although if you’re approached by a group called Leave.EU about performing in a festival for them, I can’t help but feel you should have twigged earlier).

Leaving aside the great disappointment in that they didn’t call it Leave Aid, I have to genuinely wonder why they either didn’t do their research and pick acts that were in support of leaving the EU (Mike Reed could dust off his banjo for some more UKIP Calypso – that’ll get the punters flocking, right?), or if indeed they did do their research but decided that pro-EU or politically independent acts would be a greater draw, what exactly they planned to do in terms of not keeping it from the acts while still making it glaringly obvious that it was a campaign gig? Still, for those that desperately wanted chart dance music interspersed with political speeches, Jeremy Corbyn has joined CHVRCHES on the bill at Glastonbury. Political pull-outs aren’t just confined to the UK however, as Bruce Springsteen showed, pulling out of gigs in North Carolina over a

KBPS

law intended to make it legal to discriminate against LGBT people, stating that: “Some things are more important than a rock show, and this fight against prejudice and bigotry, which is happening as I write, is one of them”. If you look back to Woodstock and the embargo on apartheid era South Africa, music has always been a catalyst for cultural change; capable of bringing causes to wider attention, and with manufactured controversy for the sake of sales being more the order of the day, it has to be said it’s good to see a musician using his position to make a difference rather than taking easy street.

Although, sometimes it’s rather ill-advised for a musician to start talking politics, as Bono demonstrated when he met the senate subcommittee to discuss the ISIS threat, and recommended “that the Senate send in Amy Schumer, and Chris Rock, and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you”, to use comedians to combat ISIS by laughing at them.

While this could just be used for a series of jokes about the terrorists laughing their heads off, far more concerning was a senators response, saying it’s not the first time it’s been suggested and it’s something they are looking at. So there you are, puns to replace guns in military action; presumably the editor is getting a bit worried? (Yes, Ed).

FINE ART We meet Jesse Malin and chat about his new double a-side single, latest album and his re-issued debut8

We caught up with New York based Jesse Malin as he took part in his UK tour with Don DiLego, fresh from performing live from the BBC with Edith Bowman as part of their Quay Sessions, all in support of his album ‘Outsiders’. Malin was very positive about bringing his music to new audiences both in the UK and the USA. “It’s always a fun time. I feel very grateful to be able to get on a bus and travel and be with my friends. The crowds have been nice and have lots of cool things to play for them!”

‘Outsiders’ was a record made quickly over two weeks in Velvet Elk studios in the Pennsylvanian mountains, his most recent album after a five year period, in a career that began with ‘The Fine Art of Self Destruction’, which has also been reissued following it going out of print with extra demos tracking the progress of the album, plus bonus songs, and on a special vinyl edition. “It’s about people who don’t fit in to life, one thing, they jump around, they can’t be in the mainstream. It’s an ode to those people. As a kid it was music that spoke to me and said – hey, you’re not alone, anything can be OK, and there’s a place where people can be different and can express themselves! “Rock, punk rock, means freedom, and Outsiders is an anthem to that!”

Touring recently with Trapper Schoepp and Don DiLego, who is interviewed later in this issue of KBPS, went really well for Malin. “It’s been great. I come out and do ninety minutes, and it’s a set that’s a mixture of stuff from my first three records and my last two, and some crazy random covers!”

Jesse Malin isn’t just about his own music thought. Through Velvet Elk Records he’s worked on putting out records like ‘Adderall Highway’ by band ‘Dead Heavens’ alongside his own records and those of Don DiLego, with a future release being ‘Motorcycle’ by ‘Diane and The Gentle Men’.

KBPS

“It’s fun. People say records, they don’t sell, it’s really a passion play more than anything else,” Malin told us, clearly showing his passion for discovering and showcasing new artists. “We travel around the world and want to put out stuff we love, and have an outlet from our stuff.” Jesse Malin has a new double a-single out of ‘Edward Hopper’ and ‘She Don’t Love Me Now’. Malin was positive about both. “I like both those songs, they’re like my kids, I can’t decide which one I like better. Maybe ‘She Don’t Love Me Now’, it’s really fun live and has got cool horns and a slow jam, a Lee Dorsey / Sam Cooke kind of thing. “’Edward Hopper’ came from watching lots of friends of mine who sits in bars every night, painting themselves into a corner. I was staring at this bar that looks like the Nighthawks painting by Edward Hopper and that song came about.”

A fan of Hopper, there’s also a video by Jesse Malin featuring a cast of people from the bar, including Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith band who just happened to be drinking there. With this music under his belt Jesse Malin looks soon to regroup with his older band D Generation for an album and then do some more touring, alongside a new record and “living as fast as I can every day!” Album ‘Outsiders’ is available to download now.

PIRATED MUSIC Don Dilego on music, his famous brain scan and his new song ‘Drive Like Pirates’

Describing his music as a mixture of Indie, Alt-Country, Pop, Twang, Rock, Don DiLego has released a new single called ‘Drive Like Pirates’, a song he describes as a throwback with its style, firmly planting it in the sixties and seventies in terms of sound. “My goal when I went into my record it with just me and another guy, one of my guitar players, was not to have any drums on it, to not make it sound like a whole band. The track is just me and him stomping and clapping until four or five in the morning trying to make as much noise as we can, getting the harmonies in there!” Creating a song that the listeners can stamp and clap along too, DiLego found the experience really fun but it’s not always like that. “Being in the studio you can have days of euphoria and you can leave the studio knowing what you’re doing is worthwhile, but you can have days where it really defeats you and you walk out saying ‘I’m done, I can’t make music any more, I’m horrible at it. “Fortunately this was one where we looked at each other in the small hours of the morning and said it’s a job well done, I felt good about it, but it doesn’t always work out like that. This one though was a great experience.” ‘Drive Like Pirates’ is taken from DiLego’s album ‘Magnificent Ram A’ which is out later this summer, and could be described as a concept record. ‘I don’t like to write a collection of songs and call it an album and put it out. I always have an idea of what I what I want it to sound like, a vision that pulls it together.

“A friend of mine had written a children’s play. I read it, and it struck me that it would make a great musical. Again, after another late night in the studio I’m going to write a

KBPS

song, called ‘Karma King’ and it was unlike anything I’d done.” Taken this song as inspiration from an album and setting out rules, DiLego began pulling the album together, after a sound with lots of drumming but without using actual drums, as well as not using acoustic guitars unless they were de-tuned or sounding interesting. “Anything,” he told us, “That would make it sound a little different.”

“Drive Like Pirates” came about early on in these sessions, inspired by other parts of earlier songs. The single is an example of DiLego’s commitment to using the studio as a tool to make more interesting soundscapes. “I like it when someone takes something that sounds different on the recording, like the Kinks. They’re an amazing example. They used lots of acoustic guitars but Ray Davies used a metal resonator on his guitar so that he was technically strumming an acoustic but it never sounding like that; it had a metallic sheen to it, which gave an original sound to almost everything he did, so I like it when artists do things like that. For me, on this record, de-tuning the acoustic to something that’s low and barely manageable, makes it sound different. “I didn’t always follow my rules, but I tried to!” When we spoke to Don DiLego he was in the middle of the tour with long-time friend and collaborator Jesse Malin and he was positive about the gigs, the new record allowing him to move from just touring with his acoustic guitar over his shoulder to being able to bring his whole band over from the US.

“I’m excited to be able to put out the songs closer to how they sound on the record. I use a lot of harmonies and instrumentation, and as much as I love playing by myself, as an artist I’m always wishing that people could hear all the other things going on, so this time it’s happening!”

During the tour and the publicity he’s also been answering e-mails and working with Malin on their record label Velvet Elk Records. “We both understand it was the worst possible idea to start a record label in this modern era but that’s just who we are. We just love music, that’s who we are. I love throwing a record in the mail and sending it someone; a love seeing a vinyl, and working on a sound for our record

KBPS

label and getting artists involved. If we get lucky to make a dime or two we’ll go and have a nice dinner, but other than that it’s really just for the love of being involved.” We quizzed Don DiLego about his favourite songs to perform, and though he said it was difficult to choose as songs fall in and out of favour all the time, he picked ‘Up and Smoke’, a quiet number which usually appears at the start of a show before the band comes out. “That’s always a nice moment as it’s stripped down and it’s just me on guitar and vocals, and when you get people to listen from the beginning, as it happened in Glasgow, it’s such a satisfying thing to hear that people care in the modern era, where people want instant satisfaction.

“The closure is the anthemic ‘A Wishful Poem’, which might be one of my favourite songs on the record. It’s a great way to put an exclamation point at the end of a gig.” During the live gigs, DiLego also covered a song from Bruce Springsteen’s sixth studio album Nebraska called ‘State Trooper’. “It’s very raw, it’s very Bruce’ he told us, “I’m not prone to covering that sort of thing but I was goofing around day and thought – If we do a live remix of this song. What if the band brought something to it, if it wasn’t just rock, almost sounding like a DJ remix but we’re playing it. It’s now one of the highlights of the set.”

Away from his music, Don DiLego also has a claim to fame relating to the film ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’. Here’s his incredible story in his own words. “When I first moved to New York City I didn’t have a dime in my pocket. My girlfriend at the time and saw a sign saying volunteers were wanted and they’d pay $50 for a test, and I said I’m In, I’ll do it. I thought it’d be some sort of psychometric test, and you’d fill out the forms and using me as a “norm”, so I did one of those and got fifty bucks but on the way out one of the doctors said they were also doing an MRI study for $100 and I said I’d do it so I came back the next week and did it just to get my hundred bucks and as I was leaving the doctor asked if I’d like to see my brain scan.

“So we went into back room and she put up the brain scan and I looked at it and asked the Doc a question: You’ve seen lots of brain scans right? How great do you think mine is compared to the others as it looks like a really great brain scan to me, just joking. And she said, yes, it actually is.

KBPS

“About a year later I get a phone call from this doctor and said that her college roommate works for Warner Bros. pictures in LA and they’re making some new movie with Jim Carrey and they called me because they need a brain scan and when I thought of a brain scan I thought of your brain scan, and they want to use your brain scan to be Jim Carrey’s in the film. “So they sent me the release form and I sent them a letter saying my brain scan thanks you, my brain scan was always dreaming of Hollywood acting! So when you see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and they go to work on his brain scan that is in fact my brain!” So where now for Don? “I’d like to keep things pretty simple. I’ve been doing this a long time. My dream is the record comes out, everyone buys it and I’m in a wild success. Anything could happen but that’s not really my aspiration. As my mother used to tell me: ‘Always remember, no matter what, it’s the destination you’re getting to not the journey, and I know it’s corny but I always remember that, and it’s absolutely true. For me the best case scenario is I get to keep coming back to Europe and people show up to my gigs! “If people come over and I get to do what I do I’ll be a very happy man.”

Careless Sons - Don’t Make Me Do This Again Taken from their upcoming EP ‘Heartbreak Major’ this is an upbeat indie hit with the crisp clear vocals and catchy lyrics feeling like the perfect accompaniment to the impending summer months. A promising single from a band to watch out for. TT facebook.com/Careless.Sons/ Rosie Nimmo - Stop Take A Minute With echoes of Nina Simone at her peak, this slow shuffle of a song is a smooth, restful listen with a mournfulness in its music that sits intriguingly next to the gorgeous voice of Nimmo. TT facebook.com/RosieNimmoMusic Dan Sartain - Walk Among The Cobras A dark, electronic number with a downbeat lead vocal. A little industrial, pretty dark musically and gritty in places, but strangely magical in its delivery. T facebook.com/DanSartainOfficial Júníus Meyvant - Neon Experience Neon Experience is a gentle, summery, laidback experience, with Meyvant’s smooth voice layered deliciously over the jazzy sounds of the band, delivering a positive message in a musical way. Adian Coker - No Angel Turning a sample of Madonna’s ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ and making it sound like a riff from a bank’s advert, Coker takes this familiar opening and adds some strong rap work. It’s most distinctive moment is what it’s lifted from Madonna, but the mix of Coker’s delivery, simple hummable chorus and the ethereal choruses work. T facebook.com/adiancoker/ Eden Royals - Close To The Sun This London based indie-dance band drop ‘Close To The Sun’, a warm, catchy song in the style of Young Kato. Upbeat, lyrically catchy and with enough instrumental wizardry to win you over, this is a grower.. TT facebook.com/edenroyals/ Elly Oh - Real Men Cry Taking inspiration from seeing her father in tears, Elly Oh turns that concept into a dark, ponderous song but one with a vibe and chorus that proves a winner, if one that is quite downbeat. Meadowlark - Paraffin Featuring the beautiful vocals of Kate McGill, this is a subtle, evolving song that builds to the title-referencing chorus. A delightful listen. The Mars Patrol - Not About You Hailing from Edinburgh, this soft-rock number is a pleasingly straight forward piece of music but with a suprising hookiness in its chorus. One of my favourites this month. TT facebook.com/themarspatrol/ Shawn Kelly and the Returned Gifts - Debt of Silence Going a little Oasis in parts with its nasalled chorus this indie tune is a neat little distraction that ticks the boxes mainly thanks to its chorus. Magical and musically shifting this is a gentle but touching number. Antix - Come Home Appearing a year on thanks to some promotion from the artist, this gentle rap number drops the usual cliched lyrics of the genre for a genuinely heart felt number that matches strong and touching lyrics with a tear-jerking string-based musical backing. Great. TTT facebook.com/officialantix/ Sera - Creative Side On this song taken from a double a-side, Sera’s beautiful voice really stands to the fore. Like a cross between Emma Stevens and KT Tunstall, this is a catchy, beautifully sung stripped back number that you need to download now! TTT facebook.com/Serasongs J Dilla - Trucks The main hook of this record comes from its lifted Gary Numan riff and the lyrics are a little cheesy and forced, but there’s something about it that keeps it from descening into something too silly. Fun enough. T facebook.com/J-Dilla-5792106068/ Jack the Rapper - Name Down A musician local to this magazine’s home town, this is a surprisingly accomplished piece of music that segues from a great sample of audio clips into the lead rap, which is well written and well balanced with the dark, hefty music. Brilliant. TT facebook.com/jacktherappermusic/ Jake Morley - Falter Produced with smooth strings and a distinctive musical riff, set against the sultry vocals of Morley it becomes an atmospheric, emotive piece, that drifts in and out like a Spanish-themed dream. debut from Irish band ‘Walking On Cars’ you can pretty much discount that phrase. ‘Everything This Way’ is a truly enjoyable album of downbeat and slight dark indie songs but with lead vocals and accomplished music that act as the glue of the LP. Opener ‘Catch Me If You Can’ is a powerful, drumled opener to the piece, sounding like a true festival favourite ready for the summer season, nailing the catchiness immediately. ‘Two Stones’ is a neat follow-up, whilst ‘Don’t Mind Me’ scores highly lyrically. ‘Ship Goes Down’ begs to be a future single with its anthemic quality, whilst breakthrough single ‘Speeding Cars’ which follows is one of the best songs of the year so far, mixing well written lyrics, a strong piano set-up and a very catchy vocal hook. ‘Love Backs Down’ and Always Be With You’ continue the vibe of the LP, whilst ‘Hand In Hand’ with its ‘Coffee, Cigarette, Goodbye’ bridge and rocking chorus lifting it up to being one of the best tracks on the piece. ‘At Gunpoint’ continues the momentum of the album and combats any accusations of familiarity in the sound to the album opener, whilst ‘Tick Tock’ lowers the tempo somewhat, the sway of the chorus offering something different.

‘Flying High Falling Low’ is probably my favourite track on the album outside of the lead single, its sombre story about struggling financially at Christmas without any of the expected positiveness you’d associate with that season really hitting home. Walking on Cars - Everything This Way It’s not often that you can really enjoy an album on its first listen but with this

is one of the best radio-friendly pop songs in a long time.

The title quoting ‘Truth’ is a more introspective subdued number but still showcasing Stefani’s very listenable vocals whilst ‘Used To Love You’ is a potential future single, the flicking between vocals styles and sounds lifting up a pretty standard chorus.

Gwen Stefani - This Is What the Truth Feels Like Former No Doubt singer and solo superstar is back with her latest and third offering, an LP that balances the line between her more adult group material and hollaback girl style solo albums. Here we get the incredibly catchy ‘Misery’ which like many other tracks on the album matches poppy hooks with sexual undertones, some not quite as subtle as others such as shown here with the ‘you’re in so much trouble’ line as she tries to be, er, put out of her misery. ‘You’re My Favourite’, another good track, is a little more urban and scatters tales of love with allusions to drug taking and bleepybloopy synth lines and drum machines.

Retro sounding ‘Where Would I Be’ is a nice shift in direction and less in-your-face whilst track four, ‘Make Me Love You’, is an absolute tour-de-force and one of the best things you’ll hear in 2016. With a funky Daft Punk lick, catchy lyrics and a cute vocal hiccup, this

KBPS

‘Send Me A Picture’ feels a little bit like filler after what has come so far, ‘Red Flag’ goes a little Sparks with its eccentric chorus and even though it’s the wackiest number on the album somehow works; and ‘Asking 4 It’ ticks the urban box again and is not a bad number, just a little overcooked, but the appearance of Fetty Wap rescues it with its rather drunk-sounding rap verse.

Fast-paced ‘Naughty’ proves to be one of the best songs on the album after a few less noticeable tracks, but once more delivers Stefani in a weird pseudo-sexual guise that feels a bit odd at times but does hark back to her more urban era.

‘Me Without You’ slows the pace down a little but with the hook with the backing vocals proving great; ‘Rare’ is similar with a pleasing choral hook; and ‘Loveable (International)’ wraps things up well with a more heartfelt piece that sums up the themes of the album. ‘This Is What The Truth Feels Like’ staddles several of Stefani’s styles but it works. At times it feels like, as a listener, you’re intruding on some private moments and the sexual references at times do tip their toes into cheesiness, but mostly it’s a positive, listenable, singable album, built around the incredible song that is ‘Make Me Love You’. Sanctum’ continuing to keep the lyrics to a minimum,

Pet Shop Boys - Super For the Pet Shop Boys’ thirteenth studio album they all go a little dancey and it’s a winning formula, albeit one that doesn’t produce as many stand out tracks as you’d expect from the duo.

With an intro longer than the track itself, ‘Happiness’ with its raga-pace is great once it actually gets going and you wish it did more of the second half in the first, but is actually a strong, if a little eccletic, set-up for the album. Lead single ‘The Pop Kids’ is quite a shift change, its semi-autobiographical, storytelling style wrapped up in a club-light tune, certainly proving that Tennant and Lowe are not willing to be pigeon holed. ‘Twenty Something’, with its slight reggae moments is one of my favourite tracks on the LP with its unusual structure that bases its hook around the key instrumental. But it’s ‘Groovy’ that really sits well with me, the crowd-scream-tinged catchy chorus one of the highlights of the album.

‘The Dictator Decides’ feels more like classic PSB, if such a thing exists, but is a little directionless. ‘Pazzo!’ is even more electronic than what has come so far and wouldn’t feel out of touch in a house nightclub; with ‘Inner

KBPS

‘Undertow’ feels similar but with more lyrics and straddles both areas better and the chorus is one of the best on the album. ‘Sad Robot World’, as you’d expect, is a more melancholy, slower number. ‘Say It To Me’ and ‘Burn’ continue the heavy club vibes. ‘Into the Air’ is a better ending, but the fast-paced drums feels at odds to the slower lyrics initially before it settles in, Tennant’s vocals wrapping things up well in the conclusion.

‘Super’ certainly has its highlights in its opening quarter and ‘Undertow’ but is a little too hefty on the club sounds for my liking, and doesn’t have a new ‘Love Etc’ to really stand out as a single. (6/10)

Niamh Crowther - Niamh Crowther [EP] Crowther’s self-titled EP consists of four tracks that showcases her powerful voice. Opener ‘I’ll Be’ is the best, her sultry sound bringing the song to life. ‘Little By Little’ is a faster piece with a better toe-tapping feel, whilst ‘Painkillers’ is a little rawer and scattergun in style. ‘Origins’ wraps up the album in a gentler way. A nice collection of songs but a bit too many musical acrobatics for my personal tastes.

ADDICTABLE We chat to Giulia about her new music!

Giulia is a 26-year-old singer-songwriter from Italy who mixes country-rock with modern pop. The daughter of a poloplaying father and fashion designing mother, she has lived for many years in Buenos Aires before returning to her home country and eventually, as she grew up, moving to London to explore her passion for music, creating her breakthrough debut ‘Raze Me To The Ground’ with producer Tom Nichols. Though with a passion for fashion, it’s Giulia’s passion for music we’re going to focus on here as she releases her latest single ‘Addictable’ and we spoke to her as she was shooting the video for that song, with locations including the streets of London and the dancefloors of a club. “It’s going to be a wild video!”

‘Addictable’, as a song, is a little bit different to Giulia’s previous work, such as single ‘Road Trip’ taken from her debut LP. “It’s a bit more poppy and alternative, but still has that Dirty South kind of sound. It’s the story of letting yourself go and not caring what people think, and having fun!” For fans wanting to dip into Giulia’s earlier work, a deluxe version of her breakthrough is out in May, released in early summer to give the sunny season some appropriately upbeat music to match it. “I wanted to release the album in a more positive situation when people are feeling positive and summery!” Reaction to the album and singles has been very positive so far especially for Giulia’s sound which comes from her Italian heritage but also her time in Argentina, which she told us has lots of American influences. “I lived in the countryside and we had a farm, and that’s when the country

KBPS

side of me got out and inspired me, artists from the 90s like Shania Twain. “That country-rock sound, I just love it!”

Giulia has lots of great moments under her belt, including supporting Anastacia in London. “It was such an incredible experience to open for such a big artist. It was a great night and I felt really honoured.”

The future is looking bright for her, including opening a festival in July, which comes on the back of Giulia’s single ‘Turn Your Light On’ being picked as the signature tune of last year’s ‘World Earth Day’. “[For it] we turned it into ‘Turn Your Lights Off! We did a great live performance with candles and it’s such an important thing and issue, and I was happy to be able to participate in that.” Away from her music Giulia is collaborating with an Italian fashion designer in a 50-50 partnership, offering business support to her partner’s design skills.

And Guilia’s plans for the future? “To continue what I’m doing now and getting higher and higher so we never stop. That is my goal!”

UNDER HER SKIN Marie Munroe on changing her sound

Oslo-based Marie Munroe is releasing her latest single ‘Give You Up’ and we spoke to her to quiz her about the new song as she arrived home fresh from an exciting tour. “There’s almost like an Armageddon feeling to it, and I suppose that’s because of the lyrics about giving something up, like this bad love that you know if not good for you. “It started with the first line that I wrote. Sometimes you make a song and the lyrics start coming right away but sometimes you have to make lyrics afterwards. It felt like it came through the music, like an intuitive thing, so when I had the first and second lines I knew what it was about, that I wanted to sing about something. It made itself in a way, but I don’t know where it came from, it just appeared like I was allowed to bring it down.”

Taken from Munroe’s album ‘Under My Skin’, that LP was a good experience for her to make as boundaries were removed. “For this album I wanted to let the music just come and be what it was and not try and change it. Sometimes you make something and it embarrasses you but sometimes when you pick it up like a year after you can see what you didn’t see the first time and you really like it the second time! “The idea was to just let those ideas come and flow. It was very exciting. I didn’t know at all where I was going with it but I’m just going to try it anyhow. I really liked the way the music just made itself.”

Marie Munroe has a strong eighties and electronic vibe to her music, but it’s a sound that has changed as Munroe’s careers has progressed, with the songs for this album fitting into that particular music style. More jazz-focussed initially, Marie has constantly involved her sound. “It’s

KBPS

not like that’s the sound, and that’s always going to be the sound I’m making my music through. I always feel like I’m on a journey and I don’t really know where I’m heading, and I like that I don’t ever feel that I’m finished, that I have to do something more, that I have to continue!” Marie Munroe does still sing jazz now and then but has moved on from that sound on her records. “My sound changes along the way. David Bowie has different sounds on his albums – the times were always changing!”

Adapting her stage name, I asked her about her change in identity. “My previous name was keeping me in the jazz area, it was a more difficult name to remember, and I don’t feel like it had the ring to it. When I started in jazz it was a tradition to use your own name and maybe put trio or quarter or behind it, so when I started out it was very natural to do that, but as my music started developing and I started writing pop music I was being misunderstood by people, who were still calling me a jazz musician even though I didn’t feel like one. Marie Munroe has a lot of achievements under her belt, including Grammy nominations and she studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music. “The nominations made me really proud and happy!” Looking ahead, she is working on new material with hopes for a new single nearer summer and some live dates at festivals this summer, and more gigs in the autumn.

CHEERS TO LIFE Celebrating positivity with Jae Franklin

Texas-born Jae Franklin is an exciting soul singer now based in Dubai and is balancing exciting work with Amnesty International alongside promoting her new single ‘Weary’, cut from her album ‘Cheers to Life’ with all donations from sales of that single going to the organisation until the 28th April. With an exciting background including membership of band Girls Tyme which also featured Beyonce and LeToya Luckett and Ashley Támar Davis, she certainly has the voice and talent showcased in her fresh song. Speaking to Jae we asked her about her new single. “Weary is a reflection of today’s global issues and things that are going on. There have been a lot of happenings in the world that have led to demonstrations and protests. It’s a way to encourage people and tell them that better days are ahead.” Keen to weave meaningful lyrics into her work, Jae writes about her own experiences and issues that are true to life, and maybe affect other people. Her music also weaves into her work in political activism, including ambition to maybe one day work with the UN in the fields of human rights and justice.

“If you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything, that’s the old saying my mum told me when I was grown up. It’s important to be a voice for people who don’t have one and to let people know what’s going on in the world, and that I’m not oblivious to it.”

On the publicity trail for ‘Weary’, a video has been launched telling the story of one man and a new pair of shoes. “The video was directed by Leonel Fernández and shot in Mexico and it’s the story of a man with a very monotonous life, and tells the story of how the simplest thing – a new pair of shoes – means such a lot to him. At the end of a long day, he’s able to take off his old, worn shoes and put on a new pair, and that means the world to him. “However that connects to other people, whether it’s treating themselves to a day at the spa, or just something new, that means a lot to people, I think a lot of people are connected to it.” Dubai has also provide to be an inspiration for Jae. “The music industry here is really growing and there’s been a lot of talk of how they can help emerging artists like myself especially with radio play, which is growing. Being here I’m able to touch a lot of places. It doesn’t take much to hop on a plane to go to other places to perform and those opportunities do come about. It’s a great place to be right now! “A lot of people are being introduced to progressive soul music so it’s a good place to make a little headway with my music!”

‘Weary’ is taken from Franklin’s LP ‘Cheers to Life’, a positive record based around her experiences. “It’s a very personal record. It’s my first collection of original material. It’s basically my three-year journey of life and discovery. I’m really proud of it, it’s like my little baby that’s taken three years to blossom!”

The album was recently revealed at an exciting launch party where Jae Franklin worked with a local talent agency, including live performances from her. “We got a great reception! The format was really different. I initially thought to have a live band but thought maybe we should do something different. My manager encouraged me to step out so I worked with US born but local artists DJ Allad, and we had drummer Terrence Lorick filling in.

KBPS

It was awesome, the three of us on stage rocking out!”

Moving forward Jae Franklin has a live residency in Dubai alongside further live festival shows including appearances at Beats on the Beach and the Formula One. And her big ambition for the year?

“I’d love to tour and be able to open up for some well-known artist and collaborate with like-minded artists as well!”
