CEO's Corner
Happy July everyone!
We are officially halfway through 2023 – very crazy to think about. Time needs to slow down sometimes
June saw beginning and ends, a beginning to our new KBIC branding and an end being the retirement of our Director of Substance Abuse Programs, Jeanne Hirzel. Jeanne has been an integral piece to our substance abuse services that KBIC offers for over 30 years. When I first came into my position, meeting Jeanne was a very pleasant surprise. I had always known of her within the community but never got to see firsthand her passion for helping others and her ability to make an impact from her generous smile to her knowledge of the accreditation, business, and clinical needs of the program
Congratulations, Jeanne! Well deserved
For the month of June, I:
Attended a KBIC Housing Developments Design Update meeting
Held interviews for Administrator of Substance Abuse
Met with The Nature Conservancy Regional Director, Julia Peterson
Attended a Keweenaw Heartlands Planning Committee meeting in Copper Harbor
Attended a CEO/CFO/Presidents monthly meeting
Met with ICWA Committee and TSS Department
Attended an informational meeting with NRD and Talon Metals
Met with Andy Chosa, Upper Peninsula Health Care Solutions
Attended the KBIC Health Fair
Attended an MOU revisions meeting with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and KBIC
Participated in a Policy Review Workgroup meeting
Attended an Employee Picnic Committee meeting
Held two Indigenous Insight updates
Attended three Tribal Council meetings
Assisted in coordinating a two-day on-site Amplifund training for department grant leads and accounting staff
Held weekly and monthly department head update meetings
July looks to be another busy month with the 4th of July Holiday week, FY24 budget preparation beginning, our 45th Annual Maawanji’iding, and many more community and department events being promoted and prepared for.
All my best,
Brigitte

Retirement celebration for Jeanne Hirzel
The guest speaker for the evening was KBIC member Cheryne Clements. Cheryne owns Fit Body Boot Camp and resides in Marquette with her husband, two sons, and two dogs.
She inspired graduates and guests with her words of wisdom, which she called six small steps on How to Win the Day: #1 Don't hit snooze, #2 Drink at least 32 oz of water first thing in the morning; #3 Find and show gratitude, #4 GSD list that contains five things you need to get done that day, #5 Exercise-workout-move, and #6 have an all in mentality. She emphasized all six steps' importance and hoped guests would implement one immediately.
A highlight of the evening was the scholarships awarded and the presentation of gifts from the Education Committee, Tribal Council, Ojibwa Seniors, and Cultural Committee.
Liz Julio, Education Director, gave closing remarks, and the graduates left the event with a renewed sense of purpose and determination, ready to embark on their future endeavors with the support of their families, community, and the KBIC Education Department.

July is Ultraviolet Rays Safety Awareness Month
UV are Ultraviolet rays come from the sun and from sunlamps and tanning beds. There are two types of UV rays that damage human skin: UVA and UVB
Lip cancer is oral cancer that is of special concern to dentists Lip cancer develops from abnormal squamous cells that grow out of control on the lips and on the skin surrounding the lips.
Lip cancer may not have any symptoms. What are signs and symptoms of possible lip cancer, which you should discuss with your dentist or doctor?
a sore, blister, ulcer, or lump on the mouth that doesn’t go away
a red or white patch on the lip
Cracked & bleeding that doesn’t go away pain or numbness on the lips
Wear a wide-brimmed hat that provides shade for the entire face, including lips.
Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds
Sand, concrete and water reflect UV rays, so cover up and wear sunscreen while outside. Snow and ice also reflect UV rays.
Protect children from the sun, because skin damage from UV rays early in life can lead to skin cancer later in life. Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight
Dentists are often the first to notice lip cancer during a routine dental exam. Lip cancer is highly curable when diagnosed early. Most sores or lumps on the lips are not cancer, though
How can lip cancer be prevented?
Minimize exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hours when UV rays are strongest. Apply chapstick with sunscreen 30 SPF before going outside Re-apply every two hours, even on cloudy days & after swimming or eating Some cosmetic lipsticks contain sunscreen. Consider using Zinc Oxide, although its opaqueness might be considered unattractive.
What behaviors increase the risk for lip cancer?
Using tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or chewing tobacco)
Heavy drinking of alcohol
Prolonged exposure UV rays (both natural sunlight and artificial)
Recognize that outdoor activities and outdoor work result in many hours outside
Having light-colored skin
Being male
Having had the human papillomavirus (HPV)
Being older than 40 years of age
Living nearer to the equator
How is lip cancer diagnosed? Dentists and doctors perform a physical exam of your lips and other parts of your mouth, head and neck to search for abnormalities. Dentists and doctors will also ask you about your:
health history
smoking and alcohol history
past illnesses
medical and dental treatments
family history of disease
any medications in use
If lip cancer is suspected, a referral to an oral surgeon is in order. A simple biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. During a biopsy, a small sample of the affected area is removed The sample is then reviewed in a laboratory under a microscope by a pathologist.

11 - ASHI-BEZHIG JULY 2023
If the biopsy results confirm lip cancer, the oral surgeon and dentist and cancer specialist will determine the best course of treatment
Remember, lip cancer is highly curable when diagnosed early. Because many cases of lip cancer are first discovered by dentists, it is important to make and keep regular dental appointments.

Dasan Hawkshield Smith Accepts D1 Football Offer
On June 25, 2023, KBIC member Dasan Hawkshield Smith accepted a scholarship offer to play Division 1 football for Central Michigan.
During the month of June, Dasan spent time traveling and attending football camps in Iowa and Michigan, as well
as being invited to travel to various schools in Lower Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio to meet with coaches, players, and school officials about playing football for them.
Dasan was offered a Division 1 - full ride scholarship from schools in all three states He was even offered a Grand Valley State University, Division 2 scholarship The impact of making a decision that will ultimately set the path for Dasan for the next five years was an excellent experience for him.
After a couple of weeks of consideration, plus all the time and effort traveling, Dasan decided to commit to Central Signing an official scholarship will be set for a later date However, Dasan and the school have made it public, they offered him a full ride, and he was happy to accept it.
From his mother, Angela Abbott, "Dasan, we are so incredibly proud of all your hard work and determination! D1, full scholarship Excited to say you will be part of the Chippewa Family next year. Fire up Chips!"
Dasan was extremely grateful for all the opportunities offered, meeting with the coaches and players. Dasan will begin his senior year of high school this fall, continuing to play football for the Marquette Redmen
From your dad, Paul Smith, "No words can fully express how proud I am of you. You set your goals for yourself to be very high and targeted; then you focus on achieving them. You go above and beyond the norm every time you set your mind to something. You put your heart and soul into staying true to your core values while representing more than just yourself For that, I am your biggest fan Fire up Chips!"
