the animate inanimate

In pl I t Ov m

this exercise I studied a sta c object (in this case it was a perfume bo le) through drawing an, sec on, and eleva on views of the object.

hen imagined how to represent movement of a sta c object in a sta c drawing.

verlaying four sheets of bristol paper, I mapped out the direc on of movement from the moent the bo le is picked up, lted, sprayed, and then placed back onto the surface.

mapping space

This exercise was aimed to develop skills in mapping and organizing space through the crea on of a cube with planes that separate space to create two dominant voids. Star ng with an unrolled cube, I mapped the exterior of the cube with a con nuous line. The interior planes were informed by the exterior geometries. I used a lot of diagonal lines on the exterior, so in return the voids within the cube were very angular.

Star ng with abstract collages of geometric shapes, I created 3D physical models informed by the collages as if they were plans for the models.

Next, the eleva ons of the physical models were reinterpreted and translated into abstract 3D modeled composi ons. The goal of the exercise was to think about how 2D drawings can be translated into 3D space, and to develop an architectural vocabulary by accompanying each graphic output with a set of formal rules describing the crea on process.

exhibition pavilion

The purpose of the pavilion in this project is to exhibit three chairs of historical significance by craing a sequencial experience through design. The pavilion sits on a 96x96 site and entered at the southeast corner. Each chair is displayed on an individual pedestal.

The physical model shows an earlier version of the design with a similar spa al arrangement, but with larger displays for each chair and small extruding roofs above each display.

My final design reflects a be er use of space due to the more condenced displays. It allows for more trees on the site and more benches within the pavilion that the visitors could enjoy.

concept models from the beginning process

The three chairs I chose to exhibit in my pavillion were the LCW chair by Charles Eames, the B3 chair by Marcel Breuer, and the Donald Judd chair.

The diagram demonstrates the rela onships between elements of the pavilion. The pavilion fits within a square shape. The red ver cal and horizontal lines through the center of the square both intersect through the center of the chair displays. The light blue lines convey that the concrete walls are parallel and the dark blue lines show a similar rela onship between the ver cal wood elements.
