The internet can also have a positive impact on young people’s lives. But would it not be healthier to celebrate anything that shouts

individuality, self-expression and freedom to choose?

Above all, let us applaud authenticity by encouraging children to be bold, whatever the online consequences. Only by doing so will they grow up to truly know themselves and, with a bit of luck, to be comfortable with the person they really are.

Action without vision is only passing time; vision without action is merely daydreaming; but vision with action can lead to extremely positive and exciting changes.

RECIPE

Tandoori lamb with naan pot of yogurt and a few spices can transform lamb steaks into a delicious spicy supper. If you prefer, serve with pilau rice or on a bed of spiced couscous.

Serves 4 Ready in 30 mins, plus marinating time

Ingredients • 4 large lamb steaks • 6 tbsp natural yoghurt, plus extra to serve • 2cm piece root ginger, peeled and grated • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 2 tsp each garam masala and ground cumin • 1 tsp each ground coriander and chilli powder • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 4 garlic and coriander naan breads • Rocket leaves and sliced tomatoes, onion and cucumber, to serve

1. Place the lamb steaks in a

shallow dish. Mix together the yoghurt, ginger, garlic, spices and lemon juice and add 1/2 tsp salt and some freshly ground black pepper. Spread over the steaks. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 2-3 hours (or overnight).

2. Grill the marinated steaks

under a preheated medium grill for 6-8 minutes on each side until just cooked and lightly charred in places. Cover the cooked steaks and leave to stand for 5 minutes.

Tip To make tandoori fish, replace the lamb steaks with 4 salmon fillets.

Spread the marinade over the fillets and leave to marinate for 1-2 hours. Bake the fish in a preheated oven at 200C/ fan 180C/gas mark 6 for 20-25 minutes until just cooked.

3. Meanwhile, sprinkle the

naan breads lightly with water and heat under the grill for 2-3 minutes. Top with rocket leaves and sliced tomatoes, onion and cucumber. Slice the steaks and pile on top of the salad. Serve with the extra yogurt on the side and mango chutney, if liked.

LOCAL ATTRACTION

The Milkhope Centre Shopping Experience! ilkhope Farm was built around 1865 as part of a programme of agricultural development by Sir Matthew White Ridley, 4th Baronet.

These developments were based on classic English Model farm designs where the buildings were specifically designed to accommodate the full range of farming activities in a sympathetic and efficient way. Often buildings would have several purposes, the ground floor housing pigs, with the first floor housing chickens, the pigs providing the chickens with under-floor heating and security from foxes, the chickens providing the pigs with food from their droppings.

The farm covered about 240 acres. Buildings were constructed from stone sourced from estate quarries at Shotton Edge and North Shotton, and would have represented the very latest and best in agriculture at the time they were built.

The main Ponteland to Cramlington road ran between the farm steadings and the cottages to the north until 1958 when the land was restored following opencast coal operations and the road was realigned to its present route to the south of the complex.

At this time agriculture was very prosperous with a growing populations as a result of the Industrial Revolution. However with the end of the American Civil War and the invention of the reaper and binder in 1850, the American prairies triggered depressing wheat production in the UK

Until 1962 the farm was tenanted, when the farmer died Milkhope returned to the Blagdon Home farm and was used for various agricultural purposes including the wintering of calves and sheep, but became largely redundant in 1982, the buildings being difficult to adapt for modern machinery.

Milkhope was largely used to winter and fatten cattle, in those days probably shorthorns and West Highland beasts.

There was an annual Fat Stock sale about 10 days before Christmas which attracted many buyers. The beasts were auctioned in the stone sale

Work started in 1985 to convert the buildings to light industrial use, the purpose being to create a number of small workshops providing opportunities for new businesses and generate employment in the local area.

The buildings were divided into

30 units and were taken by 11 tenants making use of multiple units ranging in size from 320 square feet to over 5000 square feet.

The centre was officially opened 1986 and of the original tenants, Gustharts, Blagdon Furnishings and Cane and Pine remain to this day. The original artisan workshop concept has evolved over the years due to public demand and the centre today is more of a retail outlet, popular with visitors due to its location and setting.

The Estate have recognised this and have been carrying out improvements to accommodate the increased visitor numbers, building an overflow car park to the east in 2004 and improving lighting and hard landscaping.

The farm shop was built in two phases, the first in 2002, with the second phase in 2004. Recently a bespoke new building was erected in the west of the site for Gustharts to meet his growing business needs.

Borders Adventure Darling, I’m giving up work to be an alpaca keeper.” Not words I thought I’d say to my other half, but nonetheless this is what I found myself saying back in the spring of 2017.

Social work was taking its toll and I realised it was time to make some changes. I’d moved to Beirhope with my husband and grown up children the year before. Wanting a field for my horse (which became horses on move day!) and a workshop for hubby to hide in, Beirhope offered us that and more. The farm once covered some 530 acres but had been sold off and in turn we were lucky to get a 12-acre plot. This included barns, outbuilding and a stunning cottage, which was habitable - just.

In the early days we would look at the fields and ponder what to do next. We planned vegetable patches, chickens and maybe some pigs - real ‘Good Life’ stuff.

After a visit to the Glamping show in September 2016 we had our first introduction to alpacas. I was captivated by them within five seconds; their quirky appearance, the humming noises, their inquisitive (and naughty) personalities and of course their scrumptious fleece. I could have spent all day with them, so calm and gentle - I was hooked. After a glass or two (or maybe three) of wine later that night I announced to Hubby that I was going to buy alpacas. “Yeah right” was the reply...!

So after a false start we met some wonderful alpaca breeders and ordered our five boys. Tenzing, Graffiti, Yehudi, Monty and Sam arrived in April 2017; and my notice at work was handed in too. All systems go. The lovely Debbie and Paul Rippon at Barnacre Alpacas were just wonderful with advice and support. Debbie did warn me of one big problem - alpacas are addictive.

And yes, Debbie, you are spot-on with that, they are totally addictive.

Sixteen months after we began this journey our herd has grown: we now have 13 alpacas, including two babies born last year. It’s an amazing journey to date; we faced the most extreme winter known in Scotland for decades, only to be matched by the soaring temperatures of the following summer. We learn something new each day, we have faced so many challenges I think we would miss them if they stopped! To welcome visitors onto Beirhope, to share our small farm and the alpacas is for us a true privilege. The house is cold in winter and pleasant in summer, pipes freeze, grass burns in the sun - oh, and we emptied our water tank after a leak in a water trough but not once have any of us thought of giving up and returning to normal life.

The Cut Above… ello and welcome to my page! I’m Louise Fox. I’ve been around dogs and animals all of my life and enjoyed the unconditional love they give. Five years ago I decided to repay their care and attention by becoming a fully qualified Dog Groomer. I cater for all breeds and types, from the largest to the smallest of our furry friends. The salon is very relaxed as it is part of my home and I take pride in seeing both my returning and new clients gallop in the

door to greet me.

It’s not like the average groomers in that it’s very hectic but homely and the dogs seem to appreciate this. I pride myself with the quality of my finished clients and their owners will always get the groom that they request from me

whilst always having the dog’s welfare in mind.

LOCAL CHARITY

Daft as a Brush million steps and 10 months charity founder Brian Burnie, steps back in to England on epic walk for cancer patient transport.

He’s been through 5 pairs of boots in 10 months and taken 5,000,000 steps to walk 2,500 miles around the coast of Northumberland and Scotland. Brian Burnie, founder of the cancer charity ‘Daft as a Brush’, has stepped back in to England at Gretna on his 7,000 mile challenge to bring free cancer patient transport across Great Britain and Ireland.

Brian and his wife, Cheryl, left Newcastle on 5th March 2018 from the Baltic, Gateshead to raise awareness, promote and expand the Gosforth based Charity. He crossed the River Sark at Gretna cheered on by charity volunteers and supporters.

“To see so many smiling faces cheering me over the border at Gretna was very emotional. Cheryl and I were met by dozens of volunteers and local people, it was very moving for us. I am delighted to have reached 2,500 miles but sad to leave Scotland behind. I’ve seen fantastic coastline and met some truly unbelievable people; many with close associations with cancer. But my walk must continue and I am looking forward to Cumbria and meeting with delegates from the Cumbria Infirmary to discuss the Daft as a Brush Service for their cancer patients.

difficulties. The 74-year-old suffers from Parkinson’s disease, making his challenge even more tiring, yet he’s determined to complete this 3-year mission; Brian explains: “The Newcastle based charity transports some 40,000 cancer patients each year with a team of over 350 volunteers.

Time and time again we hear how difficult and stressful it is for patients getting to and from hospital. It is my dream to create 1,000,000 bespoke cancer patient journeys all over Great Britain and Ireland.”

Brian and Cheryl have met with major cancer hospitals throughout Scotland; Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Ninewells in Dundee, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Raigmore Inverness and the Beatson in Glasgow.

Brian is delighted with the feedback from Oncologists, Radiographers and medical teams; “The response from Scotland has been absolutely incredible!”

Natural England will be offering support and advice to the charity trekker as he approaches the west coast of the Lake District. For now, Brian may have his feet up for a few days, but he won’t be relaxing for too long. “I’ve been walking every day for over 3 weeks, sometimes up to 20 miles a day. That’s taken a toll on my feet. I have come back to Newcastle to see my Podiatrist, Shirley Stevenson in Gosforth. She’s been looking after my feet from the very start”.

Brian’s dream to take the charity nationwide could be turning into reality, one step at a time. They will be back on the walk very soon, along with a double-decker bus, named ‘Bluebell’, their mobile-home for the next 2 years.
