Never before has the phrase ‘back to school’ held such importance, or been so eagerly anticipated by parents and, yes, even schoolchildren. Modern technology has, of course, been indispensible in helping with home education and continues to be ever more important in schooling as well as its many other spheres. HISTORY

A Brief History of Time or thousands of years human beings have used devices invented to measure the passage of time. The earliest monitored the sun’s shadows using stone obelisks and sundials.

Sundials remained in popular use until the nineteenth century. During Shakespeare’s time, people even carried pocket sundials, referred to by the Bard in his play As You Like It. However, measuring time using the sun only works during daylight when it is not cloudy.

Another method was to use graduated candles whose measured burn could also calculate the passing of hours, especially at night.

The ancient Egyptians and Greeks built water clocks. Known as clepsydrae, they basically consisted of two containers, one placed higher than the other. Water would drip slowly from the top container to the bottom, while markers inside the lower container showed how much time had elapsed.

Another popular and iconic timepiece was the hourglass. They were reasonably accurate and were used to measure time at sea.

Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan had eighteen hourglasses on each of his ships during a circumnavigation of the globe in 1522. Even today we still use the minute version to time the perfectly boiled egg!

It was around the fourteenth century that the first mechanical clocks with gears and escapements were invented in Europe. The old English word for a clock was daegmael meaning ‘day measure’. It was at this time that the word ‘clock’ came into parlance, derived from the Latin word clocca meaning ‘bell’, as the first mechanical clocks were made to strike the hour rather than display time.

Operated by weights, these clocks were usually large and heavy so tended to feature in church towers. The clock in Salisbury Cathedral is one of the oldest surviving examples of a working 6

mechanical clock, built in 1386 out of handworked iron.

In 1450 the coiled spring mechanism was invented, heralding portable clocks and watches. The oldest pocket watch is the spherical Melanchthon Watch made in 1530.

In 1650 Christiaan Huygens invented the first pendulum clock, which kept time more accurately than anything previously. It was found that the longer the pendulum, the greater the accuracy, which is how the Grandfather clock developed. Pendulum clocks remained the standard right up until the invention of quartz clocks in 1927.

During the nineteenth century, industrialisation made it important to keep track of time and the use of pocket watches expanded.

We tend to think of the wristwatch as being relatively modern but in fact it goes back a lot longer. It is recorded that a jewelled bracelet with a portable coiled spring timepiece was made for Queen Elizabeth I and given to her as a gift by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, in 1571.

However, such timepieces were seen as no more than ladies’ jewellery. The first purpose-built wristwatches were not produced until the early 1900s.

Today, we have seen the advent of the digital watch, mechanisms that no longer need winding, and atomic clocks accurate to a second within 100 million years – more than the length of human timekeeping itself.

The Importance of Posture osture is the way we carry and position our body throughout our daily physical activities, so being aware of good posture is important.

If you have had bad posture for a long time (and most of us do) it will feel very alien at first when you try to correct it, as the body wants to keep doing what it is used to.

However, perseverance, with regular exercise to strengthen muscle tone, will result in your posture improving without you having to constantly think about it.

For a good seated posture your knees should be slightly lower than your hips, so you need to position your chair height accordingly.

If you work at a computer, ensure that the screen is at a comfortable eye level and you are not having to hunch forward or bend your neck. Sit with your feet flat on the floor facing forwards, a hip-width apart, and straighten your back so that your tail bone ‘sticks out’ rather than your back being rounded. Your spine should form a gentle ‘S’ curve. Finally, make a conscious effort to lower your shoulders, slightly pushing your shoulder blades back and down at the same time.

You will probably need to do this more than once as we all tend to naturally carry our shoulders in a rounded position, which over time could lead to muscle tightness and aches.

Exercise and core stability are important when maintaining good posture, as muscles weaken and muscle fibres shorten without regular movement and exercise.

Stretching exercises two or three times a week will help relieve tension, increase circulation and maintain muscle condition.

Yoga and Pilates are two forms of exercise that are excellent for improving tone, flexibility and posture. There are classes available for all levels.

best posture; for example, an orthopaedic mattress or a lumbar support cushion. Always ensure that your furniture supports you. A squashy chair that is too low and difficult to get out of may not be the best thing for your posture.

Likewise, your mattress should properly support your back when you sleep. To check this, notice if your spine is straight when you lie on your side. If not, it may be time to change your mattress. Your pillow should also cradle your neck so that it is in alignment with the spine.

Bad posture not only physically impacts on our body; it has also been proven to have a detrimental psychological effect. Charles Darwin first scientifically documented the link between movement and emotion in his studies of humans and animals.

THE NEW NORMAL....how full is your diary? n these ‘new normal’ times we are all learning to do things differently.

One thing I have noticed is the lack of forward planning in my diary. Social events have become quite rare. Parties and large gatherings are a distant memory and the main social events now seem to be enjoying the company of family and friends, mostly in back gardens – as long as the rain holds off!

I’ve also noticed the effect this seems to have had on my family and friends – they have become more ‘family oriented’ – whether they have lost a loved one or someone close to them has been affected by the Coronavirus or not – most people seem to be more

conscious of caring for others.

This is a good outcome from such a difficult time. Of course there are some less positive outcomes for some.

What you can put in your diary are some plans to get your house in order – and I’m not just referring to de-cluttering!

Aesthetic treatments here are many myths around Botox and fillers and, when I see first-time clients, it’s crucial I begin by discussing ideas and expectations around treatments and results.

When talking about aesthetic treatments it’s not unusual for people’s minds to automatically divert to those celebrities or friends they may know who have had treatment and may have an obviously overdone look. However, my happiest clients tend to be those who have more subtle changes to their appearance, and neither friends nor colleagues can tell what’s been done. Many of my clients’ favourite compliments are to be told they look well rested and asked if they’ve been on holiday.

I’m quite happy to turn clients away if they don’t need treatment or if I feel they have been overworked. This can be a sensitive area as there are many practitioners out there happy to take the money who may not have the same ethical stance.

Safety first How can you protect yourself? Make sure the person you see has the right qualifications and experience to be giving you the treatment they are giving. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. I always offer a free consultation with no obligation to treat on the day. It’s important to feel comfortable with the person who is injecting and to feel you have the openness for honest feedback before and after the procedure. I also routinely offer a follow-up appointment to assess the treatment and do any tweaks if required.

Go slow Aesthetic treatment, especially for the first time, can be nerve-wracking. If clients are worried about a particular thing I try and discuss that before the treatment and work around it. For example, many clients say they don’t want to look frozen if they have a Botox treatment, so I offer them a staggered approach which often helps.

It’s important to plan maybe even months ahead and talk to your practitioner. Back to school tech for the new normal echnology has always been an important tool for schoolchildren and students, but it’s even more important now: during lockdown it became clear that children and teenagers with access to appropriate technology were better placed for remote learning than those without.

Lockdown may be over, but if infection rates rise again then we could go back to ‘blended learning’ where some or all of the school week has to take place at home – and older children are expected to use technology for homework even when things are normal.

And of course, technology isn’t just for studying. It’s also for having fun: video chatting with friends, playing games, bingeing on TV box sets and taking advantage of apps. And that means buying tech can be a challenge: what should you buy if you want something that’s useful for school or college work as well as leisure time?

Apple’s iPad has no real rivals, so if a tablet is your preferred option that’s the one to go for: even the cheapest one is incredibly powerful and flexible; however, it’s also eminently breakable, so consider a protective case and gadget insurance too.

COVID vs Education he pandemic has seen everyone’s lives change in one way or another this year and we are yet to fully understand the impact this will have.

It’s a tough time for many people and almost every industry has been affected, education included. Like all of us, the younger generation have been subject to unprecedented circumstances and the situation is having a major impact on many students’ development both academically and socially.

The reality is that some students have been successful in adapting and continuing their education at home and others have not managed so well. Through no fault of their own, the support provided by schools and at home, has varied significantly, meaning gaps in attainment are widening. Some have been provided with fully timetabled, onlinelearning schedules while others have been left to self-teach and simply revise things already learnt. The fact is that every student will have missed out this year and there is much catching up to do.

Rail Services for Gerrards Cross have never used Gerrards Cross (code GER) station personally, but it is known as the place where the tunnel collapsed, designed to cover over the railway line to allow the construction of a new Tesco car park. At 1915 on 30 June 2015, there was a loud noise as the structure fell in and trains had to be rapidly rescheduled either side of the disaster site.

Nobody was hurt, but services were not restored until 20th August. I once met the member of Chiltern Railways staff who drew up the contract for the works with Tesco who added a clause putting full liability on Tesco if train services were disrupted for any reason. He reckoned that had ensured compensation to Chiltern of around £8.5m.

And so now for something equally cataclysmic for those Gerrards Cross season ticket holders paying for an annual season ticket “Gold Card” to London Marylebone (MYB) which is £2,800, rising to £3,720 if you want to include travel in Greater London on bus and rail.

Perhaps you only want to travel two or three times a week now you have got used to working from home. The daily charge Is £19.60 for an anytime ticket, or £16.00 for an off peak day return, valid on the 0950 from GER to MYB and later trains Monday to Friday, with no evening peak restrictions. Autumn Show ow that autumn is upon us, leaves, shrubs and climbers grab our attention with their change of colours, transforming to scarlets, reds and golds. So why not include some in your garden?

Climbing plants with spectacular autumn colour include Parthenocissus quniquefolia, or Virginia creeper, a sizeable climber that can be used to clothe walls without a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of orange and red.

For less extensive covering, consider Parthenocissus henryana. Its divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veins that turn to rich red in autumn.

Another autumn climber, Vitis coignetiae, grows rapidly and has huge heart-shaped leaves with splendid scarlet and crimson colours come the autumn. It can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports, and the colours often improve in poor soil!

Amelanchier lamarckii (snowy mespilus or serviceberry) is a large shrub covered with lovely whitish blossom in spring. The emerging leaves change from a coppery colour to bright green, but in autumn the entire shrub almost appears to be on fire.

soil-needing plant that turns into a miniature ball of fire once it takes on its autumn colour, and two or more plants will provide a crop of delicious fruit.

Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a smallish to mediumsized shrub whose bare stems will be covered with scented creamy-white spiky flower clusters early in the year. The foliage changes from pale green to shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. It needs a lime-free or acidic soil and does not do so well in a tub.

Cotinus or smoke bush also has fantastic autumn colours, and is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves in shades of green, pinkish-orange or purple. The fluffy seed heads look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke.

For smaller gardens it’s hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows, depending on which one you have planted. They do well in large tubs and are perfect for a sheltered back yard or patio, and look great in a bed or border.

Making the Best of Autumn Colour Potential • To help choose plants for autumn colour, why not visit local garden centres or an arboretum? If possible, buy autumn colour plants now so you can see the precise shades that the various plants have to offer.

• Check the ultimate height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering – there’s no use planting something that will outgrow its space in a couple of years’ time.

• Planting at this time of year works well but wait for better conditions if your garden soil is very wet. In dry soil plants still need watering well, and the soil around the roots must be kept moist once the plants are in the ground.

RECIPE

Chicken and Pepper Jalfrezi ave a trip to the takeaway, just cook up this deliciously spicy chicken curry instead. Serve with pilau rice, warmed naan breads and some cooling cucumber and mint raita.

Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour

Ingredients • 1 tsp mustard seeds • 1 tsp each ground turmeric and ground cumin • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 tbsp grated fresh root ginger • 2 green chillies, deseeded and chopped • 1tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 2 tbsp tomato puree • 500g chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 2 red and 2 green peppers, deseeded and cut into chunks • 4 tomatoes, chopped • 4 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Strips of lemon zest, to garnish

1. Heat a heavy-based

non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add the mustard seeds. Toast for 1-2 minutes until just popping. Place in a mini processor or blender with the turmeric, cumin, garlic, ginger and half the green chillies. Add 3 tbsp water and process to a paste.

2. Heat the oil in the frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion and remaining green chilli for 10 minutes until the onion is soft and golden.

Stir in the spice paste, tomato puree and the chicken and cook, stirring, for 3-4 minutes until the chicken is no longer pink.

2-3 minutes then add 300ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through.

Stir in half the coriander and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve garnished with the remaining chopped coriander and the strips of lemon zest.

Tip If you don’t have time to make the paste from scratch, simply buy a jar of good quality jalfrezi curry paste and use 4-5 tbsp to make the curry.

Making a considered and heavy-hearted decision to temporarily close both Farnham Common and Ashford showrooms prior to official lockdown, they felt this was absolutely necessary to protect the team, customers and local community.

Proud of the fact that all installations were completed to a point where no customer was left without a working kitchen.

Quickly modifying their website to easily direct people to information that would guide them to measure their own space or send in building plans so that they could start the design process. They continued to service existing and new enquiries remotely.

‘Our fantastic team set themselves up working from home around family life and we were able to provide remote design consultations. We are now fitting installations of customers that first got in touch during the period that the showroom was closed!’ MD Stephen Flower proudly explains.

Mosquito Gin to take flight riffiths Brothers is delighted to announce the launch of our latest edition - Mosquito Gin! This limited-edition gin is our tribute to the Mosquito war plane that was once built in the same Penn Street factory where our distillery stands today.

Mosquito Gin not only shares a common location with the Mosquito aeroplane; it also shares an intriguing and eccentric ingredient - spruce!

Spruce was one of the materials that de Havilland used to reinforce the iconic aircrafts’ apertures.

Alex: “The unique history of our building is a constant source of fascination and inspiration to me. I wanted to evoke some of the site’s wartime history by incorporating one of the Mosquito’s materials into our latest gin.”

Nicknamed the ‘Wooden Wonder’, the military plane was remarkable for being constructed almost entirely of wood, in an age when aluminium was the main material of production. This seemingly outmoded choice of material was ultimately justified. Its timber frame made the aeroplane so light and fast that Luftwaffe fighters could not catch it. From 1941-1945, the Mosquito was one of the fastest combat aircraft in the world, reaching a maximum speed of 415 mph.

We are the first and only gin distillery in the UK to incorporate spruce needles as a botanical.

Alex: “We harvested some of the spruce needles from the surrounding Penn Woods. The use of spruce needles is not as eccentric as it may seem.

After all, juniper is one of the key botanicals of gin and juniper is a coniferous tree, just like spruce.”

The result is a juniper-led gin punctuated by piney citrus flavours and underscored by the dark fruit notes of blueberry.

Drew: “The unique use of spruce is a very tangible link between the aircraft and the gin. Hopefully, the spirit of the Mosquito plane has been captured in the spirit of the gin as a result.”

We have restricted this special, commemorative edition to a batch of just 2,000 bottles.

Crispy topped deep-dish apple pie ake the most of the abundance of home-grown apples at this time of year with this delicious deep-dish apple pie. Serve with cream, custard or ice cream.

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 minutes, plus chilling and cooling

Ingredients FOR THE PASTRY CASE AND FILLING •500g ready-made shortcrust pastry, thawed if frozen •Flour, for dusting •1kg eating apples, peeled, cored and diced •100g caster sugar •2 tsp ground cinnamon •1 tbsp lemon juice •1 egg, beaten FOR THE CRISPY TOPPING •40g unsalted butter •40g light soft brown sugar •50g toasted flaked almonds 44 September 2020

This year brought unprecedented changes to our freedom to travel as we wish. However, we can now turn our attention to what we’ll do with the relaxation of lockdown.

Scottish Highlands The Scottish Highlands are famous for their endless rolling hills and otherworldly mountainous landscapes, including Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest peak.

Renting a car at Glasgow airport for the drive to Fort William lets you take in the gorgeous Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Snowdonia It’s a similar story in Wales, with epic scenery along with some of the most exciting roads in the UK. Keen drivers should try to take in the roads around Bala.

About an hour north, Anglesey offers more picturesque views and some fantastic ocean drives.

There’s plenty to see, with highlights such as the Skellig Islands, the Dingle Peninsula, the Cliffs of Moher and Killary Harbour.

Nurburgring Nurburgring is known as The Green Hell, with the formidable circuit winding through the beautiful Eifel forest for a ludicrous 12.9-mile stretch. It’s open to the public or it’s free to park up by the track and watch others have a go, or perhaps take in one of the official races.

Stelvio Pass The Stelvio Pass is situated in northern Italy close to the Swiss border. It’s ideal for hairpin fans because this mountain pass snakes its way down steep Alpine mountains via seemingly endless switchbacks.

There can be no arguments that the Stelvio Pass is pure bucket list material.

Trollstigen Driving in Norway is a unique experience, with scenic fjords, mountains resulting in fun-to-drive roads and some of the world’s longest road tunnels. The main attraction is Trollstigen (Trolls’ Path), which features a steep incline of ten per cent with eleven hairpin bends and waterfalls cascading down the roadside rocks. Just remember to go in summer, because it’s closed during winter.

Bruges Bruges might seem like an outlier in this list but is the perfect city break location, and is just 90 minutes from Calais.

Cat Flu Just as with the human version, there are many different strains of flu so it will never be completely wiped out. However, a cat flu vaccine provides a degree of protection against this virus, which can spread rapidly between cats.

Infectious Enteritis A widespread virus, Feline Infectious Enteritis can be fatal. It is a severe infection of the gut caused by the feline parvovirus, and can be passed by infected animals and equipment, including bedding and food dishes.

Feline Leukaemia Feline Leukaemia is transmitted via saliva and can be deadly. There’s less of a risk for indoor pets, but the vaccine offers some protection for outdoor cats.

Feline Chlamydia Cats between the ages of five weeks and nine months are said to be at particular risk of Feline Chlamydia, a disease characterised by conjunctivitis and sneezing. Whilst the vaccine does not protect against the infection it does help to reduce its effects.

An initial course of vaccines may be given to kittens as young as seven weeks old, with regular annual boosters needed throughout their life in order to maintain immunity.
