WWW.KODA.EE • WWW.ENTERPRISE-EUROPE.EE OTHERS ABOUT ESTONIA Baltic green shoots Animal spirits have long been feeble in the European Union, but they are vibrant in one of its smallest countries. In Estonia more than 14,000 enterprises registered in 2011. That’s 40% more than in 2008, a record in the industrialised world. – The Economist, 7th of January, 2012 – Bliss in the Baltic You don’t have to be big to make it to the top. Or at least that is the case for Estonia, the fourth smallest euro zone member, with the best economic performance in the region. This is one of the main results of the Euro plus monitor, a policy brief published by the Lisbon Council, a Brussels-based think tank. The study looks at economic performance measured by a country’s overall economic health and the speed with which it is adjusting to the latest financial turmoil. Estonia’s performance tops both indices.
Estonia: The muted revival of a Baltic tiger Most European leaders would be delighted if their economy was growing as fast as Estonia’s. The small Baltic state’s economy is forecast to have grown by 8% during 2011, according to the EU’s official statistics body. That’s more than five times faster growth than the European Union as a whole. It’s also no coincidence that Estonia has by far the lowest national debt in the EU – 6.7% in 2010. That’s because successive governments have focused on balancing the budget rather than spending more in the good times, unlike most other European countries. – BBC News, December of 30th, 2011 –
