On Thursday, April 12, I attended the 27th annual Best of Reston, a signature business and social event that raises funds and showcases community involvement and corporate philanthropy and engagement at its best. The event is presented in partnership by Cornerstones and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and is held at the Hyatt Regency Reston. About 640 attendees enjoyed the sold out gala, Co-Chaired by Charlene Wheeless, Bechtel (2016 Best of Reston Honoree) and Doug Bushee (2013 Best of Reston Honoree), Xerox Corporation. They shared their honor and delight to recognize the efforts of individuals and organizations working hard to help others and to do their part to make Reston a better place for all of us. This year, $444,125.00 was raised to support Cornerstone’s mission of empowering more than 15,000 men, women and children each year. I had a great time and had the good fortune of sharing a table with some of the WIYGUL Automotive Clinic team, 2016 Best of Reston Honorees. Not only are these guys generous to our community, they are lots of fun and can fix my car!

A Good Cry The conviction that crying has positive effects is of ancient origin. More than two thousand years ago, Aristotle theorized that crying has the power to “cleanse the mind.” Psychologists today contend that unresolved sorrow festers like a deep wound ultimately building to a state of chronic distress. If crying removes excess chemicals from the body and reduces tension, one would expect it to be directly related to psychological health. Researchers conclude crying lowers your BP, pulse rate, and temperature, and results in more synchronized brain-wave patterns. These different areas of research all support the conclusion that crying allows people to cope with stress and can be considered an inborn healing mechanism. Despite the verified advantages of crying, the cultural stigma that remains deeply embedded within a teardrop may actually hinder the progression to a better physical and psychological well-being. So next time you’re feeling a little emotional, remember, it’s good to cry.

WOLF TRAP: A UNIQUE BLEND OF NATURE AND THE ARTS Wolf Trap is different. You can feel it the moment you step out of your car and the cares of the day start drifting away. Less than four miles from the Beltway, and 15 minutes from Reston, the Park is a world apart. Wolf Trap’s Filene Center is where some of today’s most exciting artists entertain their fans under the stars at the country’s only National Park for the Performing Arts. Whatever your musical tastes, Wolf Trap has something for you. Rock and pop, R&B and hiphop, indie and alternative, musical theater and dance, classical and tragic opera—you’ll find it all at Wolf Trap. The experience extends beyond the Filene Center stage. Many of Wolf Trap Opera’s productions are shown at The Barns, an intimate indoor venue, and Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods is just a short and scenic walk away. Wolf Trap is where your favorite music and one of the D.C. area’s favorite outdoor spaces come together. It’s a place for music and memories. It’s where you, your family, and friends enjoy a few unforgettable hours together.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS! DISCOVER NATURE. With lush greenery, towering trees, brilliant wildflowers, shaded trails, and rolling hills and streams, 117 acres of natural splendor are yours to explore, either on your own or during a ranger hike. ENJOY ACCESS FOR ALL. Wolf Trap Foundation, which presents the concerts at Wolf Trap National Park, is a nonprofit organization that aims to keep the arts accessible to all, with ticket prices for almost any budget. Young at Arts even offers free youth tickets with paid adult admissions to select performances. CATER YOUR OWN PARTY. Bring your own food and drinks, and spread out a picnic at the iconic Filene Center. From last night’s leftovers to your favorite food picked up at a local restaurant, patrons are encouraged to enhance their evening with their favorite meals on the lawn or throughout the park. Don’t want to BYO? Sample the delectable locally-sourced menu, including delicious pulled pork BBQ sandwiches or fresh mezze platters, from concessions. COME AS YOU ARE. Wolf Trap is safe, warm, and welcoming. It’s a place where everyone belongs—great for families, couples, and friends just hanging out.

See you at Wolf Trap this summer! 8

Seven more have been added to the list of exemplary community people and organizations receiving Reston’s most distinguished honor, the Best of Reston Award. Best of Reston honorees represent a spectrum of the greater Reston area’s community life. All are role models in different ways of giving back to the community.

Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation— Launching Young Lives NWFCU employees get connected through the NWFCU Foundation to give of their time and financial resources each year. The team raises tens of thousands of dollars to fund college scholarships, recruits and provides mentors for elementary school children, coordinates food, toy, clothing and school supply drives to meet basic needs of families served by local non-profits, and leverages events and activities to make a difference for kids when they are most vulnerable.

Marybeth Haneline—Engineering Inclusion and Making an Impact Once, Marybeth was an engineer with a thriving career. She imagined a more meaningful path and devoted herself to young people – her own children and those of others. She has volunteered for and served many local groups that lift up and embrace children and families who are limited in resources, and has laid out a path of opportunity.

Leslie Kane—Revealing the Beauty of Kindness A child of Reston, Leslie has invested in the community she considers “family”—with love, kindness and the willingness to support others and share her gifts. As a successful Mary Kay representative, Leslie takes her well-honed skills and lovely products to vulnerable women who need a reminder of the beauty they possess and the confidence to take that next step in their lives.

Terry Redican—Reston’s Coach for all Seasons Coach “T”, as he is affectionately known to the thousands of athletes whose lives he’s touched is immersed in youth sports year-round. Terry’s values for coaching and volunteering in Reston youth sports are centered on ideals of inclusion and development—he

sees the purpose of coaching in the fostering of every child’s potential to its fullest realization.

Andy Sigle—Support that Sings Andy realized at an early age that it’s vital to individuals and families to have other caring people in their communities to lift them up when life may be overwhelming. The list of organizations for which Andy Sigle volunteers is a wonderful cross-section of the ways that people make Reston an extraordinary—and more harmonious community.

SOSi—Serving Those Who Serve The team at SOSi extends their energy, time and resources to support veterans and military families and to make a positive difference in the communities where they work and live. From the top down and the bottom up, SOSi people are committed to creating a ripple effect with their volunteer and philanthropic endeavors to support the people their firm serves and the communities where they live and work.

South Lakes High School PTSA Food Pantry— Food from Heart to Heart “The Pantry” at SLHS arose from students’ empathy for those among them struggling to have food security and a Parent/Teacher Student Association’s desire to implement a new approach to solving this critical need for SLHS families. Their impulse to help grew to a full-fledged in-school operation that assures that students whose families struggle to feed everyone have access to nutrition and essential personal items in an anonymous and dignified process.

About Best of Reston—Nearly three decades ago, Cornerstones and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce came together in a unique collaboration that demonstrates mutual commitment to the guiding principles of our community established by Reston founder, Robert E. Simon and a shared philosophy that the collective contributions of individuals, businesses, civic and community institutions and organizations are necessary to build and sustain thriving and enriching communities. This partnership is celebrated each year in a community awards celebration.

Good Neighbors, Herndon and Reston Just like two families who may live next to each other as good neighbors on the same street but have little in common in their backgrounds, Herndon and Reston as communities are good neighbors next to each other with little in common in how they developed. But that is what neighborhood diversity is all about: you can live, work and play together and be very supportive of each other even though very different circumstances brought you together. Herndon, as an incorporated town in Virginia traces its history to 1879, but a post office for a community named Herndon was located there by 1857 as a stop on the railroad. The major commercial activities for the area were sawing lumber and milking cows. A fire in 1917 destroyed much of the town, but it was soon rebuilt. Just to the east of Herndon on the W&OD railroad at the Sunset Hills stop another community was organized around 1900 to be the town of Wiehle. Some homes and buildings were constructed, and an effort was made to start a lumber and a talc business. Unfortunately, the developer of that effort, dentist Dr. Max Wiehle, died before the community got a start, and his project did not go forward. The land next to Herndon and encompassing what was to have been the Town of Wiehle was assembled together at 7,300 acres to be largest farm in Virginia at the time. It included a dairy as well as a whiskey distillery. This is the same land that New Yorker, Robert E. Simon, bought in the early 1960s to build his planned community of Reston that he named for himself. A relatively small Virginia town in a rural setting found itself next door to a planned community with modern architecture in a country setting. Up until the railroad stopped running in 1968, there had been a physical tie between the two other than a highway. High school-aged children in both communities attended the high school in Herndon, and some still do. Shopping was shared by the two communities. Both struggled with attracting jobs and economic expansion. The slow rate of development changed in the late 1970s and 80s when a spurt of economic activity took over the region. Both communities realized sharp growth in housing, and both communities saw strong business growth along the Dulles Toll Road that opened in 1984. Reston has about three times the population of the town of Herndon, and friendly rivalries have developed between the two especially in children’s sports. Major events are shared among families in the two communities with little distinction as to where one resides. Reston’s modern architecture gave way to more diversity. Herndon’s small-town look is giving way to a more modern town center look every year while maintaining its friendly downtown feel. Both have attractive restaurants. Both have a feeling of warmth and family friendliness. It great to live in a place where your community has a neighbor like Reston or Herndon. Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum represents the 36th District, including all of Reston, in the Virginia House of Delegates

Leaders Around Reston

Marion Myers

Doug Bushée

When they moved to Reston in 1982, Marion and her husband, Paul, discovered a community with seemingly unlimited opportunities to get involved. Through her children’s schools, volunteering for local non-profits, and building her company, Myers Public Relations, Marion gravitated towards actively engaging and giving back to her community.

A graduate of Georgetown University, Doug Bushée began working for Xerox in 1991 and has worked there since in sales and marketing related capacities. He is currently Xerox’s Vice President of Sales Enablement. He moved to the Reston area in 1999. Shortly after, Doug began volunteering for Reston Association and from 2001 to 2007 served on the RA Board.

She received a BFA in Art History from Ohio Wesleyan and began her career in gallery management, but she was drawn to promoting the community and the wonderful events that make Reston so special. She has been key in launching many marquee events that have become Reston institutions such as Taste of Reston (Taste of the Town), Reston Holiday Parade, Best of Reston, Pet Fiesta, and more.

Doug also served on the boards of Leadership Fairfax and the Reston Herndon Little League. In 2006, he founded the CORE Foundation, an organization that mentors and supports those in our community seeking to help others. Also, in 2006, along with other committed leaders, Doug helped start the Reston Sprint Triathlon, an event that is now the largest Sprint Triathlon in the DC area and has raised over $250,000 for our local non-profit, Cornerstones.

She has also supported many organizations in the area with pro bono time and expertise to help them gain exposure and sponsors. For the community service she provided, her firm, Myers PR, was honored with a Best of Reston award in 2002. As a leader, she is a sought-after addition to many boards and committees in the region. She spent many years on the board and served as Chair of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, served as a director on the Reston Historic Trust for 12 years, and is currently the Hunter Mill District appointee to Visit Fairfax, and on the Board of Leadership Fairfax. Marion always recommends to those new to the area, and those starting or changing their career, “Through volunteering, you’ll develop strong ties to your community—it’s a great way to meet people and you never know where it may lead.” www.myerspr.com

Doug Bushée was honored to receive the Best of Reston award for community service in 2013. Doug describes a good leader as “someone who has empathy; someone who takes the time to listen and understand where people are coming from; good leaders ask why.” When asked his thoughts on Reston’s growth, Doug states, “Given the choice between growing and declining, I choose growing. The challenge becomes who controls the way we grow. Investments in athletic fields, schools, open space, affordable housing, community centers and transportation initiatives should correlate with the increased population.” “There is a lot “right” with our community. As the Co-Chair of this year’s Best of Reston, I can tell you that for every Best of Reston Honoree, there are twenty to fifty examples of similar work quietly being done in our community.” www.corefoundation.org

WHY RESTON IS THE PERFECT TECH STARTUP HUB Robert E. Simon’s forward-thinking design for Reston was inspired by the best of Roman and other European designs, with an emphasis on a classic architectural layout. Simon had a vision of a universally accessible space where anything a resident or business would need was available. He was way ahead of his time, anticipating how the Millenials of the 21st century, rejecting suburban life, would want to live in urban centers. Today’s Reston embodies Simon’s initial vision of a vital, creative, and collaborative community. Fueled by a wealth of valuable resources, businesses and people are coming to Reston to build something truly special. This is exemplified by the establishment of Reston as a backbone of the digital communications industry. Much of the Internet was created here, and tech organizations continue to thrive within Reston’s borders. Indeed, groups like the Brookings Institute have conducted studies showing the economic potential of the innovation ecosystem here, and they were right. Reston has taken off as a business hub. No surprise to those who have long noted the region offers a surplus of critical resources, particularly talent and leadership. The deep pool of both technical and non-technical talent in the area, for instance, is a product of the highly-rated educational institutions nearby. Collaboration among them has fueled the growth of product development and a vibrant corporate infrastructure. The area also has many government leaders and mentors working together to create policies that will affect the whole tech industry. We are a hotbed of activity for any number of innovations, including smart cybersecurity, data science, and autonomous vehicles. Make no mistake; if you’re in tech, you want to be in Reston. This area has the highest ratio of people working in technology compared to other industries than any other region in the United States. In fact, there are more people working in technology concentrated here than in Silicon Valley, Boston, or New York City.

18

AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

That technology community’s growth has led to the creation of many support services and businesses. Companies like Refraction, the local collaborative coworking community and workspace I founded, have succeeded because they are focused on the region and not part of a real estate play in a hundred cities. More than $120 million has moved through Refraction and its mix of startups, non-profits, venture capitalists, government agencies. All of it is possible because of the density of modern living spaces that Reston offers. But Reston cannot and should not become the next Silicon Valley. Culturally, things are very different here. Many people come from working secretly and non-collaboratively in the government or with contractors. Learning to adapt to a mindset where failure is seen as just another step toward success is important for those switching to a private business. Nonetheless, the area continues to grow and prove itself as a necessary hub for innovation. Look no further than the recent news that Amazon placed Northern Virginia on its shortlist of 20 cities to host its second headquarters, along with nearby Washington, D.C. and Montgomery County in Maryland. It’s logical financially too, as five of the 20 biggest venture capital firms in the greater D.C. area are in Northern Virginia. Those firms manage $6.9 billion, a little more than half of the capital of all 20 firms. Clearly, the folks at Amazon are seeing the same things I did: a highly engaged community with a wealth of talent and resources. As Commissioner for Economic Development for the county, and a member of Governor Northam’s tech council, I get to see these attributes take hold every day. But for this growth to continue, we must all get involved and invest in our community. We must look for ways to foster the talent that is in our own backyard. We must encourage the spirit of innovation that has become the bedrock of Reston’s business scene, and encourage others to join our community to keep that alive. If we do this, Reston will continue to flourish over the years and decades to come and further establish itself as the community of the future that Robert Simon envisioned those many years ago.

‘Head Shots’ Speak to Our Community The actors you see on the stages of local theaters are the people around you, and many are your neighbors. To a director and crew, they are initially just head shots. During the casting process of a theater production, stacks of head shots must be reviewed. The creative team discusses the faces of the hopeful thespians, considering which actors best fit the look of particular roles. Jolene Vettese is one of those “head shots” and is an actor in our local theater scene. As President of the Board of Directors at Reston Community Players and an actor/singer, she has many talents. “It means so much that I can do what I love on a professional level with other artists and still be near home. I can easily share my art with my friends, family, and the community where I work and play.” Vettese recently performed in NextStop Theatre Company’s “Godspell,” to which she and the musical received rave reviews. Vettese embraces theater life and the patrons that attend her performances. “I can live my dream, help support my family, and share theater with one of the best audiences around,” states Vettese. “To me, what makes acting different in local theater is the patrons themselves, most of whom live in our area. We can relate to what moves our community audience, and we can act in productions that speak to that.” Jolene Vettese is excited that there are so many opportunities and such a strong appreciation for the arts locally. Alexa Yarboro, raised in Herndon, has been acting in plays and musicals since elementary school. As she was getting her start, Yarboro notes that there “...was no Lopez Studios when I was a kid, so I went to summer drama camps out of state.” Our area is now lucky to be home to strong educational theater programs, typically run out of high schools as well as local theaters. Lopez Studios Performing Arts School in Reston is a strong player when it comes to training young adults to perform professionally. Yarboro’s first part in community theater was at NextStop Theatre Company (formerly Elden Street Players). She then tried her hand at acting in New York, but eventually returned home to the Reston area where she is a regular performer around town. “When I moved back from New York, I felt right back at home and was just as artistically satisfied, if not more so. The companies in this area put on quality shows. I know actors who started in our local theater and are now working professionals in Washington DC.” Yarboro relishes the audiences that fill the seats of her performances. She currently works in theater productions for children. Something special happens when neighbors are both viewers and participants—a bond is forged. Magic is experienced when seeing someone you know transform from one person to another on stage. The face is familiar but different, and much more than the two-dimensional photograph. A head shot represents real people in a real community, ready to be right on cue. MASSAGE: A Great Gift for Moms, Dads and Grads In the next several weeks you may find yourself searching for the perfect gift for a special mom, dad or grad. A massage gift certificate could be just the gift you are looking for to treat your loved one to some well-deserved relaxation. Some tips to ponder before purchasing a massage gift certificate: • Does the recipient enjoy massage? Believe it or not, there are some people who don’t. If it is the recipient’s first massage, you may want to purchase a 30 minute session versus a full day package. • What type of massage? If you’re not sure what type of massage or how long of a session to purchase, you can buy a gift certificate for a dollar amount and then let them choose.

• Is the facility able to accommodate any special needs? For example, if you want to purchase a massage for your pregnant wife, you want a massage therapist that does prenatal massage. Buying for a teen? Some therapists may not work with minors/adolescents.

I am more than happy to discuss any questions you may have to help determine if a massage certificate would be the right gift for the Mom, Dad or Grad in your life.

10th Anniversary Celebration! BY: Maryam Ovissi, Founder, Love Your Body Day www.belovedyoga.com

The Love Your Body Yoga Festival was born 10 years ago with a vision to create a celebratory event to gather the community so that they can experience Yoga and other well-being based small businesses in the Washington Metropolitan area at the Reston Town Center.

According to a recent study by the Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance, there are 80 million people that have interest in trying yoga. That’s a lot of interest, and we feel there isn’t only one way. So a big aim of Love Your Body Day is to make wellness accessible in a celebratory way!

We started sweetly small—a group of local yoga studios, Health Advantage, East meets West, Dream Yoga, Inner Power, Beloved Yoga and other small well-being businesses all huddled in the pavilion.

Potomac River Running-RTC and Myers PR have been amazing partners with us over the years! We currently support Southgate Community Center through the profits gathered from the event.

The vision is… LOVE YOUR BODY YOGA FESTIVAL BRINGS TOGETHER YOGA STUDIOS AND WELLNESS CENTERS FROM ALL OVER NORTHERN VIRGINIA TO SHARE INFORMATION ON THE PROPER CARE AND NOURISHMENT OF YOU, YOUR BODY AND YOUR FAMILY. Ten years later, the festival has grown into a sprawling yoga and well-being festival that runs down the streets of the Reston Town Center. We have added different tents: Kidasana Tent (kids yoga), Bhakti Tent (live sacred music), Yoga Speakeasy (education talks and experiences) and more.

I believe every business and every event is its own ecosystem…receive and give…uplift and expand. There is enough for everyone in this world and competition doesn’t exist at Beloved Yoga; diversification is what makes markets strong. Every single business that participates in Love Your Body shares the same goal…a desire to support awakening, peace and well-being in the community.

Love Your Body Yoga Festival is June 17, 2018. 10am–5pm www.loveyourbodyyogafestival.com

PHOTOS: Laurentina Photography

We began with 500 attendees and now are at 5000 attendees! What makes Yoga unique is that it appeals to every age group from babies to the wise years. Yoga is accessible for all. It’s just about finding the right method that allows it to be adaptable to the practitioner.

Local Gym Manager Walks the Talk By Jamie Toombs

It’s an interesting story how I ended up doing a Transformation Challenge. I am the General Manager of CRUNCH Fitness. I have been with CRUNCH for 5 years and had put my personal goals aside to concentrate on career success and ensuring my gym members were cared for. It seemed that I was much better at motivating and inspiring members than I was for myself. I made all the excuses many people have about time, money, too much work, my back injury… I created all kinds of obstacles. I was talking the talk for my members, but not walking the walk myself. I had put on over 40lbs of unwanted weight over the last three years. This challenge was my time to inspire not by my words but by my actions! Recently a member showed me his driver’s license picture so I could see what he looked like prior to starting his fitness routine. He doesn’t know this but after seeing his picture and his transformation over a 2 year period, I decided then that I was also going to challenge myself to improve my health and physical shape. I wanted a goal and time frame to help motivate and inspire me so I started the Bodybuilding.com Transformation Challenge. On January 14, 2018—I weighed in at 221lbs. The challenge was for 12 weeks. My goal was overall transformation including lowering my body fat percentage, adding muscle and increasing my strength. To be honest, it was to get back to where I have been in the past, nothing extraordinary because I wanted to set a realistic goal. I chose not to enlist personal trainers or other CRUNCH staff for assistance. I wanted to give anyone reading the end result a view of what anyone can achieve once they find their reason why and then commit to doing it. The biggest change and the most important piece to anyone’s success is nutrition; you have to eat right to change your body! I made reasonable changes during the first 10 weeks which included smaller meals more often (5-6 times per day), eliminating pasta, bread, rice and potatoes completely. My main food intake was vegetables and multiple protein sources like chicken (boneless and skinless), tuna, salmon, beef, but not my beloved hamburger, and lots of eggs. I usually had the equivalent of half an avocado per day. I gave up diet soda and only drank tea or water. My workout method was starting strong with a combination of cardio and resistance training 6 days per week. My cardio was mostly on the elliptical or bike and lasted at least 45 minutes. I broke down my resistance training to a rotation of days: back and biceps, chest and triceps, legs (also with specific shoulder work). Then repeat and then a day off (if I took a day off). Nothing magic or specialized—just giving it my all and sticking to it. I tried to make this as simple as I could and put all my energy into my workouts, that’s it. My motto during this challenge was Push, Focus and Create! I knew I was making progress when my work pants were getting loose, loose enough that members were commenting. By around week 8, my pants started to get so loose that they looked funny, but I was not ready to buy new pants yet. The final two weeks I added a second round of cardio per day and cut out the avocado to further improve my results for the contest. On April 8, the final day of my 12 week challenge, I weighed in at 191 lbs, 30lbs lighter than when I started! I am very happy with what I was able to accomplish in 12 weeks, and I hope I made our members and my teammates proud by committing, finishing and having good results. My journey is not over though. This was a first step to a better version of me. Now that I have created a healthier lifestyle, I plan on going even further to see where this journey can take me. Hopefully, I can encourage others to start journeys of their own by reading about mine. I know that it can be done as long as a person finds their reason, their why and absolutely commits to it. A lifestyle change is as much a mental as it is a physical workout. I challenge anyone reading this to just commit to being a better version of you.

In September 2006, I had an idea. The idea was simple, start a triathlon here in Reston to raise money for our homeless neighbors. Making the idea a reality was anything but simple and it would require the challenging work and knowledge of key members of the Reston triathlon community. In October of that year, BJ Silvey, Bunny Bonnes, Joe O’Gorman, Larry Butler, Abbie Edwards, George Farnsworth and I began planning for the first Reston Sprint Triathlon. First, we needed a date. We decided that the weekend before Memorial Day would give the Reston Association lifeguards a great chance to warmup prior to the big Memorial Day opening. Next, we needed a location, and we landed on the Lake Newport pool. It’s the only 50-meter pool in Reston and allowed us to create a 400-meter swim course. Three times around Lake Newport using Reston Parkway, Wiehle Avenue and Baron Cameron Avenue provided a natural 12-mile bike course and the RA paths gave our athletes a great 5K to finish the course. Registration was held in January of 2007 and on May 21st, 130 athletes competed in the inaugural Reston Sprint Triathlon. The race was a success! We raised $8,500 for Cornerstones, a local charity dedicated to helping those in need. The following year we opened registration the first Wednesday of 2008 and like the previous year, the race sold out within 24 hours. In 2008, we moved the triathlon to the Sunday after Memorial Day and it’s been held on that Sunday for the past ten years. Now each year the race sells out in 24 hours, hosts over 1000 athletes and engages hundreds of volunteers to benefit those in our community that need our help most. Since the race’s inception, we’ve been able to donate over $250,000 to Cornerstones; money going right back into our community. From an idea in 2006 to the largest Sprint Triathlon in the Washington DC area. This race is a tribute to the hard work of our athletes, sponsors and volunteers—and the community spirit of the place we call home—Reston.

SOUTH LAKES GRADS

Making an IMPACT The StressKiller Team What do you get when four entrepreneurs with local roots combine their collective imagination and talent to attack the growing dilemma of stress and how to relieve it? Well, you get a product called StressKiller. And what do the three brothers and one close family friend behind the product get out of creating, marketing, and selling it? Well, some surprising rewards. Brothers Paul, Christian, and Mark D’Andrea and their friend Aleco Bravo-Greenburg are enjoying the challenge. “I realize it’s a bit of a cliché, but it is true that whether it’s on a backcountry trip, a college course, a job, or your own business, it’s the obstacles you overcome that bring the greatest joy,” says Mark D’Andrea, a 1993 graduate of South Lakes High School. Aleco, who lives in Middleburg, agrees: “Who could have anticipated that interacting with so many bright, enthusiastic store reps would be so much fun? It has been quite rewarding and educational.” Education is certainly important to the StressKiller Team with two high school valedictorians (Christian, class of 1990, and Mark, class of 1993, both of SLHS) and such high-profile colleges and universities as Harvard, Oxford, University of Virginia, Georgetown Law, and others featured on the team members’ respective resumes. So it is not surprising that an extensive amount of research went into developing StressKiller, a powder developed a year ago that is added to water to reduce stress, boost energy, and enhance mood. Available in more than 2,000 stores and online, StressKiller has surged nationally since its launch. The team decided to tackle the problem of stress as a steady flow of information about how stress affects military personnel and the general public grabbed their attention. Mark notes, “A Gallup survey said that nearly 80% of Americans are affected by stress, and more than half of them say it is frequent. Chronic stress is increasingly linked to other health problems, so stress is a significant problem for society as a whole.” As a result of their research, the partners created a product that consists of a proprietary blend of “10 super stress-fighting nutrients,” Mark says, including tyrosine, theanine, magnesium, B-vitamins, and more. Christian adds, “We decided to tackle the problem of stress with nononsense nutrition. We evaluated clinical evidence. We asked: What really works for focus, calm, and reduced anxiety? What’s really safe? We selected an all-star group of nutrients.” Naturally, any entrepreneurial endeavor requires patience, commitment, and risk, and the StressKiller initiative is no exception. “Entrepreneurship demands taking on tasks that lie well outside of one’s core competencies,” Paul says. “This leads to the undeniable realization that the marketplace is complex beyond any person’s, or government’s, or algorithm’s measure.”

Mark D’Andrea, Christian D’Andrea, and Aleco Bravo-Greenburg

So where did the StressKiller team acquire the imagination and courage needed to take on this risky initiative? Mark, who grew up in Reston, says in his youth he was aware that “Reston has a spirit of civic-mindedness and community where young people and their ideas can feel supported.” Paul, the oldest of the D’Andrea brothers, had already graduated high school when his family moved to Reston, but he lives in the area now, and he agrees with Mark: “Reston inspires entrepreneurial ambition. Driving down Sunset Hills or up Sunrise Valley means seeing multiple mid-sized companies with names that no one will ever see outside of Reston—it makes you wonder: What does it take to make a company like that?” And all of the team members are quick to acknowledge parental role models. Christian notes, “Our dad was raised in an immigrant home and went to a library where he’d crank out his homework. He got a full ride to Harvard. He is the consummate self-starter with an epic work ethic. Our mom left Germany and came to America under her own power and pioneered a life here, teaching the many languages she knew at top universities from Boston to Michigan. That takes guts and embodies a ‘He/She who dares wins!’ ethic.” Aleco cites significant business growth in Middleburg and also says his family fueled his entrepreneurial spirit: “My Papa, the late Jaime Bravo, was a self-made man from one of Mexico City’s worst ghettos, who rose to become one of the world’s great matadors. My stepfather, Hermen Greenberg, upon his passing, was referred to in the Washington Post, as a ‘Washington area real estate mogul.’ My mother, Monica Lind de Bravo Greenberg, emigrated from Sweden to California, when she was 10 years old. She moved to Las Vegas, when she was 19, and became Mistress of Ceremonies of the world famous Tropicana Hotel’s Folies Bergeres.”

Obviously, this is a grateful, talented team committed to reducing stress... and to making an impact. CONTRIBUTOR: Chuck Cascio, author of The Fire Escape Stories, Volumes I & II. For more information on Chuck, visit www.chuckcascioauthor.com. SPRING/SUMMER 2018 33

Local Artist,

SANDRA DOVBERG

When Sandy and Norman Dovberg relocated to Reston from upstate New York in 2015, one of their top priorities was to find space where Sandy, an award winning silversmith, jewelry designer and painter, could continue her work as a professional artist. Initially, Sandy set up her workshop in her Reston Town Center condo. Due to limited work space, Sandy modified her focus from table top sized precious metal sculptures to smaller wearable pieces and woven wire wall hangings. As for space to paint, well, that was another challenge. Sandy joined the League of Reston Artists and several other local art organizations and began showing her work while painting and making jewelry in her condo studio. In May 2017, an artist workspace became available at Reston Art Gallery (RAGS), and Sandy was able to relocate there. She now enjoys a larger, more visible workspace right on Lake Anne. Sandy’s paintings are primarily acrylics and mixed media that range from pure abstracts to semi-representational landscapes, still lifes and what she refers to as “slices of life,” paintings that convey the subtle nuances in situations and relationships. Her work will be featured in the Reston Art Gallery upcoming June exhibit. The opening reception is scheduled for Sunday, June 10, 2-4 pm. Sandy will be unveiling her ‘Irish Storefront’ series along with landscapes of the Irish countryside as part of the RAGS June exhibit titled “Impressions of the Emerald Isle.” At the June 10 reception, Sandy will also be presenting her one-of-a kind, fully handcrafted fine jewelry. Sandy states, “In my silversmithing, I enjoy mixing metals using interesting shaped minerals and found objects to create art objects and art wearables.” Her contemporary styled necklaces, pins and earrings often include bezel set minerals, semi-precious stones and specialty beads. In addition, Sandy’s whimsical woven wire wall hangings will be on display. Sandy will be sharing the opening reception spotlight with her husband, Norman, who will perform on the guitar outside the Reston Art Gallery studio and also do a reading and book signing of his new novel, “The Brief Long-Term Therapy of A. Lester Lord,” depicting his vision of the sequel to an obscure novel by Joseph D. Nehemiah, “Cosmic Casino: The True Word of A. Lester Lord.” The main theme of each novel focuses on our search for meaning and purpose amid the chaos of the modern world. Norman drew from his expertise and experiences as a psychiatrist in writing the book. Visit www.sandracdovbergart to learn more about Sandra Dovberg.

RESTON FARMERS MARKET Founded in 1998, the Reston Farmers Market’s 21st season is April 21 thru December 1. With 30 vendors at any one time, it will feel about the same as previous years, but if you, our discerning shopper, looks closely you will remember four old-timer vendors who are no longer present and notice five interesting new stands. The 2018 Reston Farmers Market remains located in the parking lot of the Lake Anne Village Center (off North Shore Drive) and opens each Saturday morning at 8 AM sharp, closing softly at 12 noon. RFM will be closed on Multicultural Festival Saturday, September 22. In addition to the farmers/vendors, the Fairfax Master Gardeners will return to serve shoppers and friends with advice on plants and gardening from opening day through September 30. And, the terrific CORNERSTONES Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) volunteers will be under their tent to assist SNAP program beneficiaries every day during the Market season. We don’t know about how well the Nationals or the Redskins did in the off season recruiting new talent, but we assure you that the Reston Farmers Market Managers were successful recruiting great additions over the winter! SPOILER ALERT! Our new lineup includes Caprikorn Farms, a top goat cheese producer; Greenfare Organic Café with the healthiest vegan menu in the area; Good Omen Farm, a family operation featuring amazing cut flowers and tasty herbs; Noshy, with heavenly homemade cookies; and, Zayna’s Delight, a maker of magnificent hummus. Imagine what wonderful complements these fantastic five will make to the 25 returning vegetable, fruit, bakery, meat, dairy, and honey producers you know so well. We are excited about the new season and look forward to seeing you all at the Reston Farmers Market sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Authority. Into the Woods

Deepwood, off Glade Drive, is a close-knit community that includes 343 townhomes and 6 single family homes. One of the few independent communities in Reston, Deepwood is not a part of Reston Association. Built by Robert “Bob” Alfandre of Anmar Development Corporation between 1971 and 1976, Deepwood is located on a rectangular cutout from the land Robert Simon purchased from the Bowmans in 1961. Alfandre negotiated with Gulf Reston to annex Deepwood to Reston, but negotiations broke down, and he kept control of the land and the homes built on it. When Alfandre opened his sales office and models for Deepwood town homes, Gulf Reston put up signs at both ends of the development on Glade Drive that said “Now Leaving Reston.” Alfandre then put up red signs that otherwise looked just like Gulf’s blue signs that said “For Better Value.” Gulf took their signs down the next week. Because the Deepwood development was not part of Reston, they built their own pool on the subdivision to compete with the amenities of other homes surrounding them. The original marketing material boasts “With our special CATV hookup you will be guaranteed excellent TV reception” and “If you work in Washington, you can take advantage of the special commuter express bus” The town homes initially sold around $30,000 and had such options as a frost free refrigerator for the low cost of $120.00. Although no longer priced at $30,000, Deepwood subdivision is still an affordable and desirable community to live in. The development is walkable to Hunters Woods Shopping Center and Hunters Woods Elementary Magnate School for the Arts and Sciences’. Christiana Stanley, now 19, has lived in the Deepwood community her entire life. She shares, “I loved growing up here in Deepwood. All the neighbors are so nice and there’s always kids outside playing. My house backs to the woods so at night it is very quiet and peaceful.“ Today, these moderately sized homes sell from the low to upper $400,000’s and do not pay into the Reston Association fee. They do, however, still pay a $405.00 quarterly cluster fee. These homes are quite popular due to their affordability, community feel and young children’s ability to attend Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences Ellen Moyer Magnet school program. A Conversation

with Kyle

Hoffman Owner, Roofing & More, Inc. www.roofingandmoreinc.com

Q How did you develop the skills needed to operate Roofing & More? A

It was a journey, not an event. When I started the business 25 years ago, I was really good at installing roofs among other products. What I didn’t realize was that I was a roofer and knew nothing about being a businessman. The skills needed to be a businessman would not start to come or be developed until later when I began to approach my business from a different mindset. I now consider myself to be a businessman who owns a construction company.

When did you add windows, doors and siding to your list of services? It just kind of happened. People don’t want to have to hire multiple contractors for a roof, window and siding project. In 2010, we made a commitment to training and to the same excellent quality and service for windows, siding and door projects that we gave our customers when we replaced their roof.

What changes have you seen in the industry since you started? I have seen this industry rise since I started the business in 1993. The quality and efficiency of the materials themselves has greatly improved. Not just the products, but many of the companies that install them. The training and support some manufacturers offer their contractors today is very helpful. We have entered the tech world as well—video and pictures are an amazing tool for the customer to clearly see what is going on up on their roof.

What are some of the new innovations in the industry? Many of the products are now made so well that the warranties are simply amazing. GAF just came out with a granular that slowly releases the copper and zinc throughout the years. With this new product, that ugly streaking and algae on your roof will be guaranteed not to come back for up-to 25 years with the right shingle installed. I think this is a fantastic innovation. 56

How do you separate Roofing & More from other roofing companies? We are focused on our customers, their homes and what’s important to them. Obviously, we also focus on the product and specific service, but there is so much more to it than a roof or windows. When speaking with clients about past projects, we often ask if they would hire the same contractor again knowing what they know now. On average 52% say they would not. Our customer data shows that 97% would hire us again!

What are some questions to ask when hiring a roofing, siding or windows contractor? I would first start by telling any potential buyers to pay attention to what questions the company asks you, and what information and suggestions they give about your specific project. Questions to ask: Do you have adequate insurance and the proper license? What is your process? What can I expect? Does your company use subcontractors or W2 installers? How will they protect siding, windows, porches, landscaping, etc.? Request photos of what the protection will look like. Does the contractor install the products exactly according to the manufacturer’s specifications? Over 80% of products installed today have a warranty voided because it is not installed according to manufacturer specification, and people don’t know this until it’s too late. And is the company certified by the manufacturer? AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

AROUND RESTON— 2018

Spring/Summer Real Estate Market It’s Spring in Reston and that means the trees will soon be green and full of leaves. Buyers out looking for homes will find it harder to see neighborhoods from the main roads when this happens. It might be a good idea to explore the 55 miles of paved trails instead. Housing inventory will be at highest in the next few months and yet it will still feel like there just aren’t enough homes out there. Low inventory continues to be a problem in our area even though we are off to a better start than last year. If you are already a homeowner in Reston and considering selling you might want to take another look at just how much your equity position has changed recently.

Active Listings: Over the last two years the number of homes for sale in Reston at any given time has decreased. A buyer looking at townhomes in Reston in early 2016 had nearly a hundred options. Today, that same buyer has less than half the selection. Single Family homes are even harder to find with only 41 homes available today and just 15 last January. Buyers considering condos will have the best selection with 92 options. The good news for buyers is that they will soon have more choices as the number of active listings in Reston peaks in the second quarter. Active Listings | Reston, VA By Home Type 200

Closed Sales: This graph shows the total number of closed sales in Reston over the last two years. Our high point was June of 2017 with 149 homes sold. Since then fewer and fewer homes were sold each month until February 2018. This turning point is typical for our area as we head into the Spring real estate market. We are doing slightly better than last year. 240 homes were sold in the first quarter of 2017 compared to 257 this year, a 7% increase.

Months of Supply: How long would it take for all of the homes to sell in Reston if no new listings hit the market? Less than two months. This graph shows the change in demand over the last 5 years. Demand is slightly stronger this year than last year. In March of 2017 we had 2 months of supply and March of 2018 we had 1.7 months of supply. This means it’s still a Seller’s Market in Reston and that will continue to put upward pressure on pricing.

Tim’s Tips

5 Costly Mistakes to Avoid when Selling a Home

TIM FINEFROCK

703-828-4846 timfinefrock@gmail.com

1. DON’T SET THE PRICE TOO HIGH. Don’t set the price too low either. Longer days on market and price adjustments will likely net you less money. 2. DON’T SKIMP ON THE MARKETING. You’ll need more than a “For Sale” sign and a few flyers. Employ a powerful marketing strategy. To get the highest price you want as many people to see your home as possible. 3. DON’T NEGLECT TO TAKE ACTION. Be proactive on a daily basis. Call friends, family, and neighbors to see if they might know of a buyer. Network with local Realtors and business owners. Harness the power of word-of-mouth. 4. DON’T WAIT FOR INSPECTIONS TO FIX THINGS. When buyers see things that are broken they also worry about things they can’t see. 5. DON’T LOSE YOUR COOL. Buyers want to get the best deal possible too. If you get a lowball offer or the buyer makes an odd request, you don’t have to accept it. Stay calm and respond based on what’s best for your situation. KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY RESTON

FEMALE FACES OF THE FORCE Reston Police Department has 106 sworn officers; 11 are female. In addition, there are eight female support staff members at the Reston Station. While the department is only about 10% women, these women command a strong presence and are highly respected for what they do and the skills they bring to the department. I recently spoke with Officer Pam Williams and Officer Katy Defoe at the newly built Reston Police Station. Officer Williams

Officer Defoe

Officer Pam Williams, Field Training Instructor, has spent most of her career in patrol, and all in the Reston area. She has participated in the highly competitive Honor Guard and received several team excellence awards throughout her 18 years of service, including a robbery detail arrest and the Christmas Anti Theft Team award. “One of my favorite aspects of patrol is the ability to make a difference in the community.” says Williams. William’s career in law enforcement started relatively late—and because of her children. She and her children were attending a Fairfax Police Open House so the kids could explore the canine units and helicopters when a police recruiter approached her and struck up a conversation. That discussion started the process towards Pam Williams joining the force. After exams, qualification testing, physical assessments and interviews, she earned a spot to attend the academy and hasn’t looked back. Female officers attend the same classes and instruction as male officers at academy training; standards are not reduced in any way. As Officer Williams puts it “I want to know that when another officer calls in for backup, they are relieved to know that I am responding, not worried. I want to be the kind of officer I would want as my own backup.” Williams references her ‘tomboy’ style upbringing in how she goes about her duties. As a Field Training Instructor, Williams helps turn new recruits into seasoned veterans. In addition to her many other responsibilities, Officer Pam Williams regularly attends the Dinner of Fallen Officers to support those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. She actively maintains a strong police network, keeping up with countless friends across the country. Officer Williams could easily be anyone’s best friend. Officer Katy Defoe, Crime Prevention Officer (CPO) is a familiar face seen in our community. She regularly visits HOA meetings, coordinates neighborhood watches, interacts with all of the School Resource Officers, and runs the Nextdoor.com program. Officer Defoe states, “Law enforcement is more than responding to calls; it’s being proactive in the community, communicating with residents and establishing programs that prevent crime.” Service runs deep in Officer Defoe’s family; her two brothers also work in public service sectors, medicine and education. The ‘call to serve’ came early for Katy Defoe. She decided to enter law enforcement during her high school sophomore year. She studied Criminal Justice and Forensic Investigation at Jacksonville State University. Prior to joining the force, Officer Defoe worked at the Salesmanship Club Youth Camp as a Therapeutic Residential Wilderness counselor. During that time, Katy lived in a tent with no electricity for 18 months, working with troubled teens helping them to build life and family skills. Katy received a Meritorious Service Award in 2017 for her work as a Crime Prevention Officer. Officer Defoe is a Crime Prevention Specialist and General Instructor with the Department of Criminal Justice Services, the state’s law enforcement certification department, as well as the international level with the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners. Officer Katy Defoe has been published in “The Practitioner,” the newsletter for the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners. It is obvious that Officer Katy Defoe has been very busy working hard and helping take care of our community in her 15 years on the force, all done with her contagious energy and warm spirit. SAME DAY CROWNS In the past several years, new dental advances have changed the way that dental care is delivered. This is great news for patients and dentist alike. Chief among these new technologies is 3D milling. Over the past several years, Cerec 3D milling has quickly become the preferred method that dentists use to actually make crowns in one visit. No more sending them off to the lab and delivering your crown at the next visit. The result is that patients can be diagnosed and treated with their new crown on the same day. Not every dentist has this technology; in fact, less than 15% have the ability to mill crowns in their office while you wait. RESTON READINGS: Promoting Literature and Community

By Chuck Cascio Meg Opperman

Barb Goffman M Scott Douglass, Nathan Leslie, Ramola Dharmaraj, Jesse Waters

A little over two years ago, Nathan Leslie saw what he called “a literary desert” in Northern Virginia, communities void of opportunities for writers to read, share, and discuss their works. “There were regularly scheduled readings in DC, Baltimore, and elsewhere, but not here,” says Nathan, a professor at Northern Virginia Community College.

making “Independent publishing is marginal these days with very little promotional funds behind most independently published books,” he explains. “It is important to let the reading public know about all the great literary creativity that is happening. There are so many terrific writers who are not on most people’s radar.”

So, applying the creativity he uses in his own writing, he developed an idea to help fill the void. He approached Bud and Susan Burwell, owners of Reston’s Used Book Shop at Lake Anne Plaza, about hosting a monthly event featuring local writers who would be invited to read from their own original works.

At a typical Reston Readings gathering, authors read brief pieces of their work, answer questions from the audience, and provide insights about their writing process. The informality of each event in the iconic bookshop contributes to the richness of the conversation…a non-commercial celebration of the love of writing, reading, and literary discussion.

“All it took was one e-mail,” Nathan says, “and Bud and Susan said, ‘Yes!’ right away.” As a result, Reston Readings was born and has since become an institution at Reston’s Used Book Shop on the last Sunday evening of every month. The readings generally attract an audience of 30 or more avid literature fans who gather to hear three or four writers read from their works. No fee is charged to attend, nor is any payment made to Nathan, the authors, or the bookshop. Nathan is passionate about the contribution to the art of writing that Reston Readings is

68

What does Nathan, who is the author of 10 books, get out of Reston Readings? “I personally just love hearing what people have created,” he says. “I kick back and enjoy the readings. It is so rewarding to see all the talent out there!” And it is also rewarding to know that he and Reston’s Used Book Shop have contributed significantly to enriching the area’s literary landscape.

Reston Citizens Association— A Voice for All Reston Citizens Association Outreach Committee

Reston, an unincorporated community within the Hunter Mill District of Fairfax County consists of 15.7 square miles, and not all of it is a part of Reston Association. Reston Town Center, Deepwood (off Glade Road), and much of the northern and western edges of Reston are not members of RA. So how does one get involved in civic affairs when Reston is not a town or a city, especially if one lives in an area that is not under the Reston Association umbrella?

Reston Citizens Association’s Mission The RCA mission is to promote Reston’s vision and planning principles, to sustain and enhance its quality of life now and in the future, by serving as a non-partisan, action-oriented organization for all Restonians. RCA takes a holistic approach to understanding the Reston community’s needs and desires and proposes results-oriented solutions. Our goals are: • To educate the community by monitoring, analyzing and reporting on issues affecting Reston and its future. • To engage the community by actively listening and communicating with Reston residents in writing and in public meetings.

• To facilitate the voice of the citizens by representing the community at local, county and state level meetings and forums as well as with all other relevant stakeholders. Established in 1967, RCA is a community-wide, nonpartisan, and action-oriented organization in which everyone that lives, works and plays in Reston has a voice. At the time of RCA origination, there had been a change in ownership of the master developers of Reston, and the citizens had concern over a lack of planning for Reston’s future. The Reston Citizens (formerly Community) Association was formed. RCA comprises a Board of Directors serving three-year terms who are elected by Reston residents (16 or older). To achieve its mission and goals, RCA utilizes independent committees and collaborates with other community and Fairfax County organizations. “RCA is the incubator for just about everyone involved in leadership positions in other organizations in and around Reston. We provide the opportunity to get involved in serious issues and teach people how to interact with our state and local governments,” said RCA’s President, Dennis Hays. As an example, the Reston Planning and Zoning Commission, which reviews Reston projects before moving to the County Planning Commission, was originally a committee under RCA. Reston Citizens Association offers volunteer opportunities for those who want to have a voice in this community. Residents who are not members of RA due to home address have an ideal opportunity to share their expertise and get involved in the civic affairs of Reston through RCA. We are all Restonians, regardless of master HOA (or no HOA), and everyone’s input is valued. www.RCAreston.com. AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

In The Know explores the “hidden gems” of Reston—people, places and things known only to a few people—and shares their stories with Around Reston readers so everyone, even Reston newcomers, can be “in the know.” Rev. Embry Rucker, Priscilla Ames

IN THE KNOW!

HERNDON-RESTON FISH—Helping keep heads above water My husband and I are renovating our kitchen. It’s a big undertaking; we had to remove everything to tear out cabinets, rip up floors and breakdown walls. We have way too much stuff! Dishes, serving bowls and novelty appliances as well as table linens, vases and votive candles have really accumulated since we moved in 15 years ago. It’s time for spring cleaning! As the saying goes “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” I’ve boxed up these gently used items to donate to The Bargain Loft, a volunteer-run thrift store operated by Herndon-Reston FISH—Friendly, Instant, Sympathetic Help, a 501c3 nonprofit established almost 50 years ago to provide short-term emergency needs such as rent, utilities, medical items and prescriptions, and household items to people in our community. www.herndonrestonfish.org

©Jim Kirby

I’ve known about FISH for many years; however, a recent presentation on Reston Women Pioneers by the Reston Historic Trust and Museum and the Reston Community Center introduced me to Priscilla Ames, one of the original volunteers of FISH. Known affectionately as the “First Lady of Reston” for her work at Lake Anne Hall (the plaza’s original community center), I learned that Ms. Ames was a sincere community activist, always helping those in need. With her partner, Rev. Embry Rucker, they established his namesake homeless shelter and lobbied for affordable housing; as well, she organized coat drives and food collections for Reston Interfaith (now known as Cornerstones). Not surprisingly, she received a Best of Reston Award in 1995 and the Robert E. Simon Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 for her continuous commitment to our community. She died in 2016.

©Jim Kirby

In this season of renewal, I encourage fellow Restonians to give new life to old belongings by donating to The Bargain Loft—and be like Priscilla Ames, and so many others, providing friendly, instant, sympathetic help to all neighbors, to lift up and strengthen our community! Ashleigh Dorfman is a Reston mom of three daughters and enjoys exploring and writing about our community. 72

‘Women Pioneers’ of Reston Many ‘Women Pioneers’ impacted Reston’s development in the 60’s and early 70’s. The Reston Historic Trust & Museum hosted an event led by Lynn Lilienthal this past March. Over 125 guests attended the engaging presentation featuring early Reston leaders, Chloethiel Woodard Smith, Priscilla Ames, Carol Lubin, and Jane Wilhelm and a panel discussion with panelists, Kohann Williams, Pat Macintyre, Laura Thomas, Menda Ahart, and Ann Page. Panelist, Laura Thomas stated that the women highlighted at this discussion and many other women were the “foundation of Reston’s community.” Women have always been working or volunteering in our community. If they could provide knowledge or a skill, they did so, allowing Reston to thrive as a welcoming and successful place to live.

Carol Lubin

Chloethiel Woodard Smith

Jane Wilhelm

Pat Macintyre

Priscilla Ames

Chloethiel Woodard Smith was a nationally and internationally known architect and urban planner. As one of the original Lake Anne architects, she designed both the Waterview and Coleson Clusters. Although she did not like to be referred to as a “lady architect” we would be remiss not to acknowledge her impact on Reston as a woman pioneer. In 1971, her firm, Chloethiel Woodard Smith & Associates, was the largest female-run architectural firm in the United States.

Ann Page moved to Reston in 1971. She was a volunteer for Common Ground, an early gathering place for residents. Common Ground was also an employment agency, a sitter service, and a childcare center. Page later sold ads for the Reston Directory (no longer published). She was involved with starting Temporary Types and the Reston Business School, which employed many Restonians and taught them valuable skills. Her work with GRACE connected residents with artwork.

Priscilla Ames’ mission in life and as director of the developer’s Community Center was to welcome newcomers, share all the opportunities Reston had to offer, and refer those in need to the agency best equipped to help. She was involved in establishing the early grocery store at Lake Anne, the gathering place Common Ground, and the Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter.

Laura Thomas, originally from New York, moved from DC to Virginia. She was skeptical of Reston’s promise as an open community and remembered that it took some time for Reston to have the amenities of the cities she had already lived in. When South Lakes High School opened, Thomas worked as a math teacher and retired in 2004 as Chief Education Officer.

Carol Lubin was involved in the social planning for Reston, making sure Reston would be a community ready for its first residents. She created the “Master Plan” for churches, schools, community programs, and social amenities in Reston. Regardless of who you were or your economic status, Lubin ensured that the Reston community would welcome you.

Menda Ahart came from Detroit to Virginia, moving to Reston in 1971. Her first introduction to Reston was through the Black Arts Festival, and after attending, she decided to move here with her family. She became involved with organizations including Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help (FISH) and Reston Black Focus. Her musical talent has made her the “voice of Reston” for many.

Jane Wilhelm served as the first Director of Community Services and The Reston Foundation. She was also involved with the Reston Unitarian Universalist Church, the Reston Interfaith Association, and the Reston Community Association.

When Kohann Williams moved to Reston, she was anticipating a career in the federal government. Instead, she started a family and volunteered in Reston giving tours and contributing to the Lake Anne Nursery and Kindergarten (LANK) and the Reston Community Association. She would later put her passion for government work into action by working on Supervisor Martha Pennino’s campaign in Reston.

Pat Macintyre, a renowned artist, is the owner of the Reston Art Gallery. In 1968, Embry Rucker, Episcopal Priest for Reston, asked Pat, then a student at Corcoran, to begin organizing art shows for the Common Ground, a coffeehouse/community center located in Lake Anne Village Center. Pat is known for her steadfast efforts as a community volunteer.

GLOBAL CAMPS AFRICA Helping communities in need

By Phil Lilienthal

My wife, Lynn and I moved to Reston immediately upon returning from being Peace Corps volunteers in Ethiopia in 1967. Since Bob Simon was Lynn’s stepfather, we had been to Reston many times previously. We chose Reston, sensing that Reston was ground-breaking and, if it survived, we would love being a part of it. The week after we moved to Reston, Bob Simon was fired by Gulf. I didn’t have a job yet, and Lynn was settling in with our 8-month old son, Andy. After two months of a job search, I landed a job, and life began in Reston. There were about 2,500 of us hearty souls here in 1967. We felt like pioneers in the wilderness, living in town houses that aped city life but were miles past working farms that were closer to the city than us. I worked for the Peace Corps General Counsel’s office in DC, and then we went back overseas as Peace Corps staff members to the Philippines and Thailand. When we returned in 1974, I started my own law practice in Reston and, on my father’s death, assumed ownership of his summer camp for boys in Maine. Soon after, Lynn started PALS Early Learning Center in Reston, with her partner, friend, and neighbor, Peggy Lansons. PALS was the state’s first licensed infant child care program and grew over the years to a robust 250 children, including before and after school care. Many of the teachers and directors currently in child care in Reston today got their starts at PALS. One thing that Reston fosters is individuality. Years later, when I changed careers and started to work in Africa, no one made me feel that I was less of a person to be giving up a healthy financial life for one without a salary in a foreign place. This was an endearing and appreciated part of Reston life. Enough people were doing or had done exotic things that they were appreciative of something a little quirky. In 2003, I gave up my summer camp and had eased out of my law practice before that. I loved the institution of summer camp and wanted to use it for greater benefits to the campers. I also wanted to renew my interest in Africa by starting a camp there that would give the campers fun and would teach them the skills needed to reach a healthy and productive adulthood. I decided to focus on traditionally underserved children and youth and landed in South Africa with a local partner that had expressed a similar interest in starting a camp. The nonprofit camp we started, Global Camps Africa, was intentionally misnamed to indicate that we would be focusing on Africa but we really could serve anywhere in the world. We work in the former township of Soweto, one of the largest slums in South Africa, working with schools, orphanages, and community organizations that serve the lowest income and most needy kids. Raising money from the U.S., we provide a week of traditional camp activities, including sports, teambuilding, arts and crafts, theater,

and swimming, and have brought in new ones (suggested by our local South African partner) of nutrition, yoga, and life skills. Life Skills forms two activity periods a day and is an interactive discussion and instruction on the main psychosocial and medical issues that kids face and know little about. Things like HIV/AIDS (South Africa has more HIV positive people than any country in the world, and their population is only 50 million), self-image, empowerment, reproductive rights, puberty, sexuality, teen pregnancy and parenting, drugs, alcohol, fear and hatred of foreigners (xenophobia), gender bias, STIs, and others. There is not enough time in the week-long program to do a thorough job, so we have follow-up Saturday Youth Clubs that meet in the campers’ neighborhoods every two weeks and give them more time to focus on these and other issues. These clubs give the campers a sustained program that doesn’t come crashing to a halt when they leave camp. It also promotes a bond among people who have experienced the program, even though it may have been at different times and in different years. Global Camps Africa has had over 8,600 children through the program in its 15 years. The biggest thing we have seen is how the campers change the trajectory of their lives from the experience. Instead of staying content with what they have grown accustomed to, they are eager to open their eyes to what the world has to offer and to try attaining it. They look into themselves and view their strengths and potential and set a course. In a country where unemployment is 50%, we have seen our graduates move into higher education, get jobs, delay having families, and act in keeping with the choices that they now know they have. Because Global Camps Africa is the only camp in the country that does this kind of work, we limit the camper stay to a single camp. We make up for this with Youth Clubs. In this way, we can serve many more campers and have high-impact intervention with more campers. Our camp experience is available to volunteers who want to serve as camp counselors. No special skills needed-just a love of kids and 12 days in Africa. We also welcome financial support from others who want to help make a difference in this underserved community. phil@globalcampsafrica.org • www.globalcampsafrica.org

In this technology age where our children have more access to information than any generation before them, what can we possibly do to keep them engaged all Spring and Summer? relish taking things apart but never putting them back together?

enjoy bringing their imaginations to life by creating video games, characters, or animated stories?

You are in the company of a passionate young person with unlimited potential.

I write humorous and sincere books inspired by the joyous, crazy, and funny moments I have with my children, Ava, Vincent, and Decklan. I also write comforting and heartfelt books to help families and children who are dealing with loss, from my own experience of losing my first son, Kendrick. I hope my work as an author helps all families to embrace parenthood, cherish childhood, laugh at the crazy, and soak in the good. www.alissabuoni.com

Oh, The #Adulting You’ll Do, December 2016

Make A Wish For Me,

This is a fun book that embraces the carefree and simple days of childhood, while shedding a little light on what it really means to be an adult in today’s world. The book reminds children that there are a lot of responsibilities associated with the fun of being an adult. This humorous children’s book is inspired by the rhymes of Dr. Seuss.

This is a sweet poem book meant to help families who have experienced loss. This book is for children to help them understand and deal with the loss of a child in a family. Encouraging the reader to make a wish for the child who has passed, it helps open up a dialogue between parents and children regarding loss.

April 2017

The loss of her son to complications of Heterotaxy syndrome and congenital heart disease inspired Alissa to donate a portion of book sales to Children’s National Health System in Washington DC to help children and families treated there.

‘Raised Reston!’

LESLYE LAWSON Leslye Lawson was born and raised in Reston. Though she moved away for a few years, she again, now lives with her father on Saffold Way, following her mother’s death in 2011. Leslye works for Tall Oaks Assisted Living on North Shore Drive as the Marketing Associate where she feels at home helping seniors and their families.

Leslye’s parents moved to Reston from Washington DC in 1966-67 to start a family. They liked the idea of a planned community where one could ‘Live, Work, Play.’ At the time, $33,000 seemed like an astronomical amount to spend on a house and plot, little did they know that real estate prices were only beginning to go up. Forty + years later, Mr. William Lawson is still happy with his great decision! William R. Lawson was an architect for the U.S. General Services Administration. His architectural design was chosen as one of the 6 house designs that would be used to build the Saffold Way community off Ring Road, near Lake Fairfax Park. He also worked on the Hillcrest Cluster design team to earn extra money for his house down payment. Carol “Kay” Cloud Lawson, a Fairfax County School teacher taught at Forest Edge and South Lakes High School while Leslye was in attendance. She taught students with learning disabilities and special education needs, as well as children who were labeled Special Ed, but in reality most just needed someone to believe in them. Mrs. Lawson started the College Partnership program at South Lakes High School to help under privileged or disadvantage children get training and scholarships to colleges. She also started the Laptops for Success program at South Lakes. Leslye’s favorite place in Reston has always been Lake Anne Plaza. Reston Used Book Shop at Lake Anne is one of her favorite cozy places to escape. One of Leslye’s fun childhood

memories is walking from her house with her blown up raft to spend the day swimming and people watching on Lake Anne while listening to the outdoor music from Il Cigno (now Kalypso’s). “I miss the Lake Anne Pharmacy...they had the best greasy fried egg sandwiches and milkshakes at their fast order counter”, says Leslye. Even as a young person, Leslye enjoyed the art at Reston Art Gallery and the rotating paintings by local artists at Café Montmartre Leslye is proud to be ‘Raised Reston.’ She states, “Reston is like no other place in this country. People in other parts of the world know about Reston; students study our community in their design and planning courses. In some ways growing up in Reston is a bubble. We have all we need at our fingertips; we have trails, lakes, shopping, sports, libraries, community centers, swimming pools, village centers, golf courses, night life and activity clubs. We have a sense of adventure and stability; we have family values and consideration for our neighbors; we have no mayor or figurehead, and we are not governed by the rules of a township or city. We have a voice through our elected board members who live among us, whose children play with our children, many of whom grew up here.” Leslye shared a couple of fun facts she learned from her father who worked on the original Reston Planning Commission. Did you know that just about every tree you see in Reston was planted? This area was all meadowland when purchased by Bob Simon. There are plans for Reston that literally have every tree mapped out. That is why when you walk around today you will see trees with little numbered silver tags on them. They are all accounted for. Another interesting piece of trivia she shares from her father is that because Reston was designed as a ‘utopia’, a place where one can live, work and play in harmony, other than original family plots that were here before Reston was created, there are no cemeteries in Reston. In a perfect utopia there is no death and as Reston was designed as such, you can’t die here (well, at the very least you cannot be buried here). “Robert E. Simon said this to my father when they were in a meeting discussing whether or not to plan a cemetery space for Reston.” Do you want to share your ‘Raised Reston’ story? NORTHWEST FEDERAL CREDIT UNION FOUNDATION 2018 Best of Reston Honoree—Giving Back to our Community The Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation, located on Spring Street in Herndon, is on a mission. Their mission is to empower young people to achieve their goals by helping them learn while supporting their health and well-being along the way. The NWFCU Foundation was established in 2004 and is the philanthropic arm of Northwest Federal Credit Union. A 2018 Best of Reston Honoree, the NWFCU Foundation is active in our community, working with the Embry Rucker Community Shelter, the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center and several additional local organizations to provide support for youth in need. The NWFCU Foundation provides scholarships for college-bound individuals, and to date has awarded over $1 million to 258 award recipients. The Foundation has a long-standing partnership with Dranesville Elementary School, where volunteer mentors support third grade students’ academic and social well-being. Their recent Weekend Meals Backpack Drive benefitted at- hope children in the area who rely on school-provided meals and need supplemental food on the weekends. A unique way that the NWFCU Foundation supports youth is through their annual Night of Magic event at Inova Children’s Hospital. The celebration allows seriously ill children and their families a chance to attend a party on-site at the hospital, including dancing, food, and fun activities in partnership with local businesses and individuals. This year’s 9th annual Night of Magic will be Friday, August 17th. The NWFCU Foundation is able to hold the Night of Magic each year through generous donations from local businesses, as well as funds raised through events, such as their annual Neon Night Glow Run. This year, the run takes place Saturday, July 14th at NWFCU, 200 Spring Street, Herndon. The untimed course winds through the W&OD and Runnymede Park trails. This family-friendly event includes your choice of a 5K or one mile fun walk/run, pre-and-post race activities, music, dancing, and a raffle. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in their own glow wear or festive costume. Often families run or walk together, including even the youngest participants in strollers. You can pre-register online at www.adventureenablers.com/nwfcu-neon-night or on day of race. www.nwfcufoundation.org
