During the holiday season, it’s especially nice to take a moment and say Thank You to the men and women who give their extra to take care of our community every day. To show appreciation each year, the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, along with 25 local restaurants and 60 volunteers, hosts a First Responders Luncheon in December. It is a highly attended and popular event that Around Reston is excited to support. Reston would not be the secure community it is without the strong dedication of our law enforcement and fire fighters. ~ Kat Toussaint, Publisher

Thank you First Responders for all you do! If your business would like to contribute to the luncheon, please email Amber at amberb@restonchamber.org

When a community works together, ‘Dreams for those in need come true.’ CONTRIBUTOR: Joseph Crawford, YMCA Executive Director

asting personal and social change comes about when we work together. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-byside with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

To better assist the Fairfax County community, YMCA Fairfax County Reston hosts their Annual Y Gala on Nov. 12, 2016, with the theme “Make Dreams Come True.” The YMCA Gala started 17 years ago and has always been set on the foundation of community togetherness to raise awareness for the YMCA as the second largest charitable organization in the US. More than 300 community members attend this popular event. The YMCA uses the funds from the Annual Gala to reinvest in the local community and provide financial scholarships to more than 3,000 families in Reston and Fairfax County providing swim lessons, early childcare educations, preschool and day camp. Thanks to the help of donors last year, the YMCA Fairfax County Reston was able to provide over $500,000 in financial assistance to economically-challenged families. According to Executive Director, Joseph Crawford “The YMCA Annual Gala is a must experience community event every November.” YMCA Fairfax County Reston is honored and grateful to have so many partnerships with likeminded service organizations and agencies such as Northrop Grumman, Transaction Network Services, Griffin-Owens Insurance Specialists, Flynn Realty Associates, Devotion to Children and so many more. A Message from the Chamber Making a Difference in the Reston Community One Student at a Time Joining Forces with South Lakes High School for 24 Years As the winter season approaches, I’m reminded that one of my favorite chamber programs is almost here! For 24 years the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) has joined forces with South Lakes High School to host our annual Ethics Day event. On November 22, 2016 from 8:00am to 2:00pm, I look forward to seeing over 70 Reston Chamber business members and community volunteers serve as Table Leaders, to the entire senior class of Reston’s South Lakes High School. Each year over 500 + students travel off-site to the Sheraton Reston, spending an entire day working through challenging ethical dilemmas and learning how decision making will affect their adult lives. During this program students are given a series of real-life scenarios and reach decisions on topics including personal relationships and accountability, medical emergencies, texting and driving, public safety, substance abuse and cyber bullying. Last year we introduced a new room sponsored by Leidos called the “What Would You Do? Room.” Students were given voting devices and challenged to think outside the box on several different real life situations. Ethics Day is a program that was initiated by one of Reston’s key business leaders, Charles A. Veatch over 24 years ago. Mr. Veatch saw an opportunity to bring the business community together with Reston’s youth to consider the importance of integrity in action. Mr. Veatch approached the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) to produce the program. Since its inception Ethics Day has become a model for similar programs across Fairfax County and the region. I’m proud to represent the first Chamber in the Northern Virginia area to implement an event that engages our future leaders in ethical thinking and gives our members a chance to give back to our community. The Reston Chamber plans on continuing to bring programs that connect the business and community together. For more information about Ethics Day visit www.RestonChamber.org.

Leading Ladies Around Reston

DR. HODA KAZEMIFAR

DORIS TYLER

Owner, Reston Serenity Smiles

Owner, Chesapeake Chocolates, Wine, Gifts & More

With the foundation she received from supportive parents and attending The Madeira School in McLean, Dr. Hoda Kazemifar learned that she could accomplish anything she put her mind to through hard work and dedication. This strong mindset and lack of boundaries allowed Dr. Kazemifar to pursue her dreams of dentistry and to open her Reston dental office in 2011.

As the oldest of five siblings and a mom of three boys, Doris learned to take charge and be flexible. She attributes much of her success to great role models including her parents who valued community and bosses who were teachers and mentors. As a special needs teacher and a trainer for teachers and care givers, Doris learned to listen and evaluate, take initiative, and to build on others’ strengths.

While running a successful business has its challenges, Dr. Kazemifar says, “Raising two rambunctious daughters can be just as challenging. Teaching my girls that they can reach their goals by not giving into obstacles that get in their paths is my proudest achievement. My daughters are definitely the highlights of my life. I work every day to show them that having gratification as a mom and business owner is quite possible.”

After resigning from her job and choosing to be a stay-at-home mom, Doris started Chesapeake Chocolates in 1998 with her sister-in-law as a home based business producing handmade chocolates. In 2007, Chesapeake Chocolates moved to a retail outlet in Lake Anne Village Center. In 2015, Doris expanded the business to include wine, gifts and more. In 2016, after much hard work and perseverance, Doris successfully returned the popular postal service to Lake Anne when she opened Bob Simon Lake Anne Contract Postal Unit.

The passion, drive and compassion that women bring to healthcare is what makes them unique and successful. “I opened my own practice because I wanted to be in control of providing my patients with the best care and attention possible.” This year, Reston Serenity Smiles celebrates 5 happy years serving patients in the Reston area.

www.restonserenitysmiles.com

When asked what advice she would offer to women starting a business, Doris says, “Learn as much as you can about your craft…and don’t stop. Ask questions and practice. Be flexible. Create an environment in which you are comfortable. Work with people you admire and enjoy. Remain calm.”

703-622-1325 www.melonelawpc.com YOU NEED A WILL... AT ANY AGE 1. Sometimes the best die young People in their 20s and 30s go through plenty of life changes that make it important to have a will early in life. Getting married, having children, getting divorced, or going through a major medical condition are all major life changes that require smart planning. Think about who you would leave your assets to if you were to pass away. 2. Someone's got to look out for the kids If you want a specific family member or friend to take care of your children, you'll need to designate him or her specifically in your will. 3. You want to keep things civil at home You should choose someone you trust to manage payment of final

expenses and distribution of assets. Major conflict can be avoided by choosing a neutral party and not a major beneficiary of your will. If you choose an attorney to handle your estate, make sure you have funds set aside to pay the fee.

4. You don't want the state to step in If you leave it up to the state to decide, they'll hand over everything to your next of kin. If you'd rather leave your property or assets to someone outside of your immediate family or a non-blood relative, a will protects them. 5. You want to keep the family business alive If you run a small business, a will gives you the chance to ensure it lives on long after your passing.

Your Money DNA Your Money DNA is the lens through which you view your entire financial world. It impacts how you earn, save, spend, manage and invest your money. Most of us assume that everyone thinks about money like we do, and those who don’t, well, they’re wrong. In a relationship, misunderstandings and frustrations around money arise because each person views money differently. Each person has their own unique Money DNA. While there is no money gene, the way you think about money seems to be something you’re just born with. Your Money DNA is the lens through which you view your entire financial world. It impacts how you earn, save, spend, manage and invest your money. And since money touches every decision, your money personality frames your perspective on life. There are 5 basic Money DNA Profiles: 1. Spender 2. Saver 3. Adventurer 4. Steward 5. Avoider Each can help you make great financial decisions and each has the potential to get you into financial trouble. That is why there is no right or wrong Money DNA profile. It is about identifying your profile and that of those with whom you make financial decisions. The more you know about your perspective on money

the better equipped you are to work with your significant other to build a strong money relationship. With your profile identified you will suddenly know why it drives you crazy when your significant other goes into the store for a gallon of milk and comes out with milk… and doughnuts and a magazine and batteries. And you will suddenly know why you feel controlled when your significant other gets mad at you for buying doughnuts and a magazine and some batteries. You will begin to manage your money more effectively and reduce your levels of stress when you embrace your Money DNA rather than ignore it or try to override it. To increase money understanding in a couple, each person should take the Money DNA profile survey on their own. And then compare the results. Many couples have reported to me that this was an eye-opening experience and well worth the time. It gave them insights that they had never seen before. To get on the road to leading a happier, less stressful and more productive life, take the first step on your journey and discover your Money DNA. Go to www.TM-Wealth.com

Reston Holiday Parade, and More! Old Time Traditions on Friday, November 25 CONTRIBUTOR: Carol Nahorniak, Myers PR PHOTOGRAPHER: Mark Regan, photographer

Reminiscing time-honored traditions and sentiments of holidays long ago, Reston Town Center will present the 26th annual Reston Holiday Parade with some old-time flair on the day after Thanksgiving. Stepping off at 11:00 a.m. on November 25, the season’s celebrations begin with hundreds of entertainers, community groups, and giant balloon floats in a 1-hour procession along Market Street. Those who arrive before the parade begins will have a chance to receive one of 10,000 commemorative jingle bells that are handed out along the spectator route. The holiday traditions continue in the evening when Santa and Mrs. Claus magically light up the huge tree in Fountain Square at 6:00 p.m., followed by a sing along with The Reston Chorale. The full day of cheer and charity begins at 8:00 a.m. with the Gingerbread Man Mile for Kids, and following the parade there’ll be visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus—donations for photos benefit South Lakes High School Chorus, plus Mini-Train Rides on Market Street which will benefit Cornerstones. After the sing along, horse-drawn carriage rides continue through 10:00 p.m. to benefit Volunteer Fairfax. The festivities are made possible with the help of hundreds of community volunteers, and sponsor support from Reston Town Center Association and Reston Community Center. For all the details, visit restontowncenter.com/holidays.

Reston Station

Looking UP in Reston Things are looking up in Reston. The economy is strong: many new business starts, low unemployment, and lots of construction. The Silver Line is operational with the extension to Dulles due to open in several years. More bus transit has been added. Bike lanes are finally being marked on more streets when possible.

But things are literally looking up in Reston! For many decades Heron House built in 1966 at the original beginning of Reston at Lake Anne was the tallest building around with 15 stories. It was a high rise next to a lake in the country. After 50 years it remains popular with timeless one to three bedroom condominiums. Heron House

Decades later another high rise came to Reston as commercial office space. At 15 stories on the highest point in Reston, the International Center served as a beacon for more businesses and residents to come to Reston. It drew little attention for many years. In the 1990’s there was a dramatic change in our community. The lid came off. The sky became the limit for Reston development. Two office buildings opened at Fountain Square in Town Center in 1990 at eleven stories each. They were followed shortly thereafter by One and Two Freedom Square at 18 and 16 stories respectively. An incomplete list of what followed or is in planning include the 15-story Avant Apartments at Town Center and the under-construction Signature Apartments at 19 and 21 story towers. Across the street is the high-rise of Harrison 14

Apartments and just down the way at Wiehle is Reston Station with BLVD apartments, an office building under construction and a hotel planned. The high rise at International Center is no longer alone; its location is now called Reston Heights, and it will be joined by residential and commercial buildings. A plan that would have expanded Lake Anne with other high-rise structures to join Heron House has not been realized, but it is just a matter of time.

Reston Town Center A vibrant community like Reston will continue to attract new families and businesses. There simply is not adequate land available for such growth to be accommodated with suburban sprawl nor would such development be desirable. Community leaders and developers have done a good job in transit-oriented planning to focus growth around transit modes and to make it easy for residents to walk and bike.

From my perspective, things are looking up in Reston—with the high-rise growth of our community and our continued fine quality of life! Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum represents the 36th District, including all of Reston, in the Virginia House of Delegates

Preserving Reston’s Green Space Amidst Increased Development by Laurie Ironside If you are not already aware of the massive uptick in construction throughout our community, try this short tour: Take in the activity around our Town Center, then head down Reston Parkway and turn left onto Sunrise Valley Drive. Turn again at Wiehle Avenue, pass by the Metro complex and return to the Town Center via Sunset Hills. Everywhere you go, you see building going on! Spurred by the arrival of Metro, developers are pursuing projects that will result in a high-density mix of residential and business use near and along the Dulles Toll Road. This is all part of the Reston Master plan, and an exciting moment for our community. As you move along Sunrise Valley, however, you will also notice a green expanse across the street from one of the community’s largest construction projects. That green space is Reston National Golf Course, the focus of a four-year effort to avert unplanned-for development in our community. Fairfax County, Reston Association and the grassroots organization, Rescue Reston, fought— and, for now at least, won—the battle to keep this

Audubon-certified, 166-acre plot of land open for recreational purposes only. Just driving alongside this green expanse calms nerves frayed by the activity of a bustling construction zone. Indeed, that stretch of Sunrise Valley Drive is symbolic of what we aspire to in Reston: On the one side, an ambitious and wellexecuted shift towards urbanization; on the other side, a green, mostly undeveloped place residents can go to quietly reboot and relax. Both of Reston’s golf courses have the permanent open recreational space designation in the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan, but we must assume the owners are keeping their options open. Only an event such as putting the land in a land conservancy trust can end our constant watch for the next move on our open space. As Reston shifts to higher density and greater numbers, we must be unremittingly vigilant about protecting our open spaces. After all, the triumvirate of home, work and recreation has always been why we live here.

Prevent Aches and Pains The transitional seasons in the mid-Atlantic are so beautiful for outdoor activities. But tending to late autumn leaves, or shoveling your drive after an early winter snow fall may leave you too sore to get out and enjoy it. Follow these tips to help prevent the aches & pains of seasonal yardwork. 1. Pace yourself—when raking leaves, don’t overwhelm yourself with the entire yard; instead, divide the yard in to smaller areas and take breaks after clearing each area. 2. Switch sides—when raking or shoveling, try to alternate which arm controls the rake/shovel. Your non-dominant side will be a bit clumsy at first, but giving your dominant arm a little

break will help reduce muscular pain in that arm/shoulder. 3. Keep an upright posture—whether raking or shoveling try to avoid overreaching and bending at the waist, which strains the muscles of the low back. Rather, use shorter strokes and keep your tools close to your body. 4. Use your legs—when lifting piles of leaves or tossing shovels full of snow. Again, avoid bending at the waist and straining the lower back.

Eating Out Around Reston La Ong Thai Bistro 2521 John Milton Drive, Herndon, VA www.laongthaibistro.com La Ong Thai Bistro opened its doors about two years ago in the Fox Mill Shopping Center in South Reston/Herndon. This cozy eatery is modern yet warm. It is situated on the end corner of the shopping center so it has many windows and an open, almost hip neighborhood feel. There’s outside seating and a full bar inside. My family, friends and I have eaten at La Ong Thai many times. I live close by and always love it. The menu has the perfect amount of choices, including appetizers, soups, salads, sides and large entrees. At this visit, my family and I started with vegetable spring rolls and Tom Kha soup — absurdly delicious. We ordered Thai iced teas. If you have not had a Thai iced tea, you should! It’s bright orange, sweet and creamy. We ordered Panang Chicken, Crispy Tofu Ginger Stir Fry, Drunken Noodle with Crispy Tofu, Papaya Salad, and Shrimp Rama. Our friendly waitress brought our food out quickly. It was tasty and hot. The portions were large. Our entrees looked like pieces of colorful art; almost too pretty to eat. I’ve eaten at La Ong many times, and I can honestly say I have never had a negative experience. The wait staff are all pleasant and at the top of their game. The food comes out quickly, hot and delicious. The price point is reasonable. My family’s favorite dishes are Drunken Noodle and Panang Chicken. We love that there are so many entrees that can be made with their wonderful soft or crunchy tofu. The Papaya Salad is amazing and pretty to look at, but be warned — it’s very spicy! Visit La Ong Thai Bistro soon! Look around, you just might see me!

It’s 5:00 somewhere! Must Visit Reston Happy Hours— PassionFish Reston and Il Fornaio Restaurant

PassionFish Reston PassionFish is devoted entirely to the freshest bounty of the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers, and waterways. Located at 11960 Democracy Drive, PassionFish Reston is one of 7 restaurants in the Passion Food Restaurant Group. The Happy Hour menu is extensive. All food and drinks on the menu are just $5.00! Some of the tempting food offerings are Fish Fry, Oyster Shooters, Mahi Mahi Tacos, Crab Nachos and Cheeseburger Sliders. I had difficulty choosing what to sample, but with the help of Executive Chef, Christopher Clime and Beverage Director, Scott Clime (yes, they are brothers), I sampled the Crab Cake Sliders and Peruvian Style Ceviche. Yum!

Growing up 5 minutes from the Maryland line, I have high standards for crab cakes. There was no disappointment this day! I enjoyed jumbo lump crabmeat smothered in old bay with light pickled slaw atop homemade slider buns. I next tried the classic Peruvian style ceviche, a cool choice, especially on a hot summer day. PassionFish adds cancha corn in their version. The corn adds a delightful crunch and texture. Both dishes were delicious. For my beverage I sampled another taste from South American; Caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail. Caipirinha is made from cachaca (distilled sugar cane juice), lime, and brown sugar. PassionFish serves Caipirinha over the rocks, and the lime is cut thicker with less pith. Devine. To learn more about PassionFish Reston, visit www.passionfishreston.com

Five Reasons to try PassionFish Reston Happy Hour! 1. Excellent value—$5 for any of the Happy Hour food and drinks listed. 2. Happy Hour is everyday including weekends! Times: M-F: 3-6:60, Sat: 4-6:30, and Sunday: 4-9pm. 3. Cool modern vibe with friendly staff. 4. Generous food portions! PassionFish Reston’s Happy Hour portions are the same size as the appetizer options on the regular menu. 5. The bread with the white fish spread. When you visit PassionFish for Happy Hour, ask your waiter to bring you bread. I loved the homemade bread and white fish spread that was brought out to me with my happy hour dishes.

Five Reasons to try Il Fornaio’s Happy Hour! 1. Il Fornaio’s cocktails are made with high quality liquor. Yes, that includes the $6 happy hour cocktail specials. 2. Largest bar area in Reston Town Center. It is so easy to feel claustrophobic during a crowded happy hour, and a big bar can help alleviate that feeling. 3. Even though it’s a large bar, it still maintains an intimate feeling. Il Fornaio has a family oriented and homey vibe. I felt the genuine consideration and interest the staff had for their customers. 4. All the food is fresh and made to order! You can taste the quality in the food. 5. The calamari is to die for! Also, you can choose to get your calamari dish either fried or sautéed.

Il Fornaio Restaurant Il Fornaio’s mission is to provide their guests with the most authentic Italian experience outside of Italy. There are locations in California, Colorado, Washington and Virginia. I selected Il Fornaio on Market Street in Reston Town Center for this article because of all the wonderful recommendations from friends and other foodies. I had to try it myself! I was given the five star treatment from staff members, Gerard, Faraz, Carlos, Oscar, Vitaly, and Oswaldo. Il Fornaio has an upscale, welcoming bar area. Everyone is friendly including the other guests. The happy hour menu offers variety and value for quality food. The creative pizzas, at $6.00 each are a very popular choice. One pizza is enough for 2 light eaters especially if you order a salad off their regular menu. Other tasty options are carpaccio and calamari, also $6.00. Happy Hour is from 4:30-6:30 Monday–Friday and on Sunday.

It was love at first bite when I tried the Bruschetta Al Pomodora. This dish was made especially delicious by the homemade pesto and marinated tomatoes. It was easily my favorite happy hour dish that evening. For a drink, I tried the Rye Smash. With my taste in cocktails, I was hesitant to try a whisky drink however, I was pleasantly surprised. The fresh lemon juice and mint balanced out the drink. It did not taste like straight whiskey which I sort of expected. The Rye Smash was a cool and refreshing drink on a hot day. Other interesting options are the Maker’s Tea and Tuscan Lemonade. Next time! To learn more about Il Fornaio Reston, visit www.ilfornaio.com/reston

BOOK REPORT ABOUT THE AUTHOR, CHUCK CASCIO

Chuck Cascio moved to Reston in 1971. An award-winning journalist (sports editor—Reston Times; education columnist —Reston Connection; special correspondent—Washington Post), Chuck taught English and Journalism at South Lakes High School from the day the school opened in 1978 until 1996. Chuck was the founding adviser to the student newspaper, the South Lakes Sentinel, a publication that has won numerous awards in its distinguished history. The author of three nonfiction books, and hundreds of news stories, feature articles, and opinion pieces, The Fire Escape Stories, Volumes I and II mark Chuck’s new focus on writing fiction. Chuck and his wife, Faye (a nationally acclaimed science educator who taught at South Lakes High School for 15 years), can often be found at Reston’s Life Time Athletic Club or on nearby tennis courts or golf courses. Find out more about Chuck and his books at www.chuckcascioauthor.com.

The Fire Escape Stories, Volume I;

The Fire Escape Stories, Volume II;

April 2016

September 2016

It’s 1950s Brooklyn. Cousins Mike Burns and Salvatore (Sally-Boy) Boccanera are born one-minute apart in the same hospital. They share their early lives together, and, at first, their circumstances seem similar. However, as the boys grow, subtle differences emerge. The Fire Escape Stories, Volume I, tells nine coming-of-age episodes–sometimes humorous, other times disturbing, often touching– in the shared lives of the “twin” cousins. The young boys discover Brooklyn together, confront new challenges, and face situations that gradually shape the directions in which their lives are headed. A fire escape becomes their shared space, the place where they go to grapple with their experiences. As narrator Mike Burns describes it: “That rusty iron structure reeked in the rain, blistered in the sun, and iced over in the snow, but it was where Sally-Boy and I talked and thought and grew and philosophized and plotted and tried to understand all we could of ourselves, of one another, of our worlds, of the world.” The Fire Escape Stories, Volume 1, immerses readers in the subtle impact events can have on the young, how the boys care for one another, what they do and do not understand... and the reason everyone might need a fire escape. 26

Where does a fire escape lead? Can it really save lives? Is it, in fact, a way out of danger? These questions are at the heart of The Fire Escape Stories, Volume II, a collection that builds upon the tales in The Fire Escape Stories, Volume I. Volume II takes place in the early 1960s. The fire escape in Brooklyn has always been there for cousins Sally-Boy Boccanera and Mike Burns. It is where they share beers, swap stories, take girls, and confront one another. And it remains a sanctuary-in-waiting as the boys grow. But as their lives change, can the fire escape provide all the safety and answers they need? Slowly, the boys see distinctly different worlds emerging. Sometimes together, and at other times on their own, they confront the emotional confusion of adolescence and grapple with their choices, decisions, and directions. Along the way, each boy realizes he must make a life-altering decision: Does he take the fire escape? Or does he choose a different route?

Straight Outta South Lakes By Madison Evans Junior

In 1979 South Lakes High School was founded in Reston Virginia, it is the primary school for students in Reston to attend grades 9-12. South Lakes is one of twentytwo high schools in the Fairfax County public school district that make up the AAA Liberty Conference in the Northern Region. Prior to the construction of the school, most residents in Reston didn’t think a high school was needed, so it took a committee and two referendums to get the vote passed to build the school. South Lakes’ colors, royal blue and kelly green, were chosen by the same committee who brought us the notorious mascot, Seymour the Seahawk. Originally, South Lakes was set up as four quadrants divided by grade level. The classrooms were open with dividers rather than walls, and there were four separate cafeterias. But in 2006, South Lakes began a 55 million dollar renovation, completed in 2008. Dividers were replaced with walls, but the four quadrants still exist as sub-schools, and the four cafeterias were morphed into one. Over the years South Lakes has had a plethora of successful, talented alumni in writing, sports, and music; to name a few Grant Hill– NBA player, Michael Hersch– composer, Michael, “Mike the Great” Tarver– wrestler, Alan Webb– Olympic track record holder, Benny Blanco– music producer, Eddie Timanus– writer, and Christy Winters-Scott– women’s basketball Hall of Famer, currently serving as the girls basketball coach at South Lakes.

Señora Tatschl

New Spanish teacher at SLHS By Leana Travis Freshman

We take pride in our student diversity, but not everyone is aware of the diversity among our teachers as well. Each year, we welcome new teachers to South Señora Tatschl Lakes, and like the students, each one has a unique story to tell. This year, we welcomed Señora Tatschl to the Spanish department. There are many qualities that set her apart, and her origin is no exception. Señora Tatschl’s roots take us across the Atlantic to France. She grew up in France, and with her French father and American mother, and learned to speak both languages. She attended college at Virginia Tech, and although she had planned to major in business, she ended up majoring in Spanish. “I originally was going to major in a business-type field and then minor in Spanish, but then I switched and ended up majoring in Spanish,” she says. She isn’t a native speaker, so she had to learn Spanish, but her love for the language began in middle school and continued as she took classes throughout college. She is new to teaching, and while it can be difficult to navigate the new territory, she really loves the job. Her favorite part of the job is connecting with the students. With the responsibilities that come with being a teacher, it’s not always the most glamorous job, but Señora Tatschl says that getting to know the students, learning together, making mistakes together and getting through the school year together is what makes it most gratifying. Señora Tatschl says that maintaining a positive attitude is very important. “You set the tone in your classroom, so if you’re stressed, it’s going to be a stressful day, or if you’re frustrated you tend to take it out on your students, even if you don’t mean too,” she explains. “At this stage of our lives, life can be particularly complicated and confusing, but our environment often determines our mood and attitude. The people that we surround ourselves with can have the biggest effect on us, and sometimes a smile is just infectious enough to make someone’s day,” said Tatschl.

JOHN PINKMAN–Doing GOOD for our community

Jeff & John Pinkman John Pinkman, local resident and founder of Rescue Reston, an organization established to prevent development of land where Reston National Golf Course sits has been giving back to our community for over 38 years. You may know John as your neighbor, friend, or local advocate. Some of you may know him as ‘the baseball coach!’ John was living in New York in the early 70’s when he first read about Reston in the New York Times. He was so intrigued by the vision for this unique planned community that when passing through the area, he made a side trip to see Reston. When a new job was transferring him to DC, he thought Reston might be the place for his family to settle. He came for a visit during the Reston Festival at Lake Anne. He enjoyed the mix of cultures, the community spirit and congeniality of those who called Reston home. “Everyone is equal here. I wanted to raise my children to be open to others, regardless of their race or religion. Reston was the ideal place.” he explains. Shortly after his family moved to Reston, John discovered that his first son, Jeff, age 4, was a natural at baseball. When son, Patrick came along he too had a talent for the sport. Pinkman himself had played college baseball, yet, the social change taking place on his 1960’s college campus had eclipsed his sports ambitions. Now, as a Dad, he and his sons became quite a ‘baseball’ team. John started as T-ball commissioner, became a coach for the Reston Little League as his sons pursued the sport, and later, the Director of Baseball Training. John raised the money and built by hand the first bull pen at South Lakes High School. His career as a pro-athlete trainer came about as more parents approached him to teach their sons baseball skills. John became the baseball coach who made house calls. Reston backyards became his training ground. Jeff and Patrick went on to play college baseball. The Pinkman Baseball Academy, Dulles, VA grew into a full time endeavor for John while his sons were away. After graduation, Jeff and 38

Pat returned to train younger ball players in the family business. “The secret to winning in any sport is to help the average players perform at a higher level. Yes, it is important to have stars, but those middle players, those are the ones to focus on.” Pinkman says most families they coached just wanted to help their sons improve their abilities in a sport they enjoyed. John believed that character and leadership lessons were as valuable to impart as athletic skills and included this philosophy in his teaching. According to Jeff, “Pinkman Academy trained over 250 high school players who went on to play college baseball.” Some received scholarships helping to offset college expenses. Many used the leadership skills they developed in training to advance their professional careers after college. Pinkman’s son, Patrick is now a pitching coach at Fordham University. John turned over the reins of Pinkman Baseball Academy www. PinkmanBaseball.com to his son Jeff. John’s new vocation is a baseball safety consultant and legal expert witness. His latest project for Reston is to conduct a safety audit of 11 of the community baseball fields for Reston Association. As far as Rescue Reston, while the group recently succeeded in stopping commercial development on the golf course, John, along with the rest of the Rescue Reston team stays committed to ensuring Reston does not lose the green space established in the original Reston master plan. There are many faces of homelessness—from those who work, to those who suffer from mental illness or poor health, veterans and the elderly. It may be hard to comprehend that on any given night in Fairfax County there are more than 1,000 individuals who are homeless—one-third of those homeless individuals are children. November is Homelessness Awareness Month, and opportunity to reflect on how we are changing this picture through a countywide effort to prevent and end homelessness.

Ending Homelessness is Possible

Cornerstones is a nonprofit that exists so individuals and families in our region who are homeless, living in poverty or facing other needs, can access resources that offer stability, empowerment and hope for healthy and connected lives. For those who are homeless, entering the Embry Rucker Community Shelter (ERCS) in Reston is often the first step toward stability. At ERCS, Cornerstones provides safe, emergency housing for families and single men and women 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our comprehensive services include child care, medical assistance, nutritious meals, a nurse on staff and financial counseling. In addition, our in-house employment specialist helps unemployed or underemployed residents expand their skills as they prepare to look for work. For children, we offer tutoring and mentoring assessments to help kids achieve developmental and academic milestones. We also employ a full-time licensed housing broker who specializes in finding affordable housing options that help our residents settle into stable housing as quickly as possible. What makes Cornerstones different from many other safety net organizations is that our support continues after the immediate crisis has passed, focusing on reducing poverty over the long-term. We offer our neighbors in need the tools they need at times of crisis, then empower them with resources and skills that give them hope for the future, for themselves and their families.

If you are inspired by the work we do, please join us for a one-hour “Experience Cornerstones Virtual Tour” where you will gain further insight to Cornerstones’ mission and the important work that we can do together. For tour dates, please visit www.cornerstonesva.org/events.

Last year we helped 52 families and 84 individuals leave the Embry Rucker Shelter and homelessness, and nearly 70% are stably housed 6 months later. Through our financial mentoring program, 33 families who were formerly homeless have now saved $188,000 in trust accounts to reduce debt, get an education and even save to buy a home. In the past several years, new dental advances have changed the way that dental care is delivered. This is great news for patients and dentist alike. Chief among these new technologies is 3D milling. Over the past several years, Cerec 3D milling has quickly become the preferred method that dentists use to actually make crowns in one visit. No more sending them off to the lab and delivering your crown at the next visit. The result is that patients can be diagnosed and treated with their new crown on the same day. Not every dentist has this technology; in fact, less than 15% have the ability to mill crowns in their office while you wait. Make sure your dentist is using the most modern technologies to improve your dental experience.

‘Raised Reston!’ Geoffrey Kirby When Geoff, or Dusty as his childhood friends called him, left for college, he didn’t return for many years. He went to school, joined the Army, moved around and finally came back to Northern Virginia in 1999. But he didn’t come straight back to Reston. He lived in Oak Hill, South Riding and Leesburg before finally settling in Reston in 2012. Geoff grew up on Chatham Colony Court. He loved hanging out at the now-non-existent Lake Anne pool (used to be on North Shore Drive), very close to his house. He attended Forest Edge Elementary School, where his favorite teacher was Mrs. Cuffee, then went on to Herndon Middle School and both South Lakes High School and Herndon High (where he graduated). As the father of 11 year old Nathan, Geoff enjoys the fun of seeing his son hang out in Lake Anne with his friends, just as he did at that age. They fish in the same places where he fished as an 11 year old. It’s neat to see the memories repeated. His fondest memory of growing up in Reston was the summer that he, his brother Dal, and friends, Pablo, Teddy and Chris, built their own ‘pontoon’ boat and floated around Lake Anne all summer long—Geoff is pretty certain his son would never be allowed to do that now.

Jessica (Over) Johnson Jessica (Over) Johnson and her family were ‘models’ in one of the early ads promoting townhouses in Reston. She was about 4 at the time and remembers it vividly. Maybe it was this early experience that firmly tied her to Reston! Jessica fondly remembers often walking down to Lake Anne with her sister from their Northgate Square home to visit her mom. Her mom was the manager of Dockside Sales, located where Café Montmarte and Reston’s Used Book Shop are currently. A trip to Lake Anne always included going to Lake Anne Pharmacy to get candy, and playing in the fountain. Playing in the fountain remains her favorite ‘Raised in Reston’ memory. As a young girl growing up in Reston, Jessica happily went to Reston Day Camp every summer. She remembers they all wore the bright yellow camp t-shirt and that it was often very hot. It was a special day when they could go inside Brown’s Chapel to cool off a bit. After graduating from Herndon High School in the 80s, Jessica went to college in Colorado. She came back briefly in the early 90s, left again for a bit, then returned permanently in 1999 with her husband, Barry Johnson (also a HHS Alumni). RESTON RAIDERS The Reston Raiders Hockey Club was founded on June 28, 1993. The Raiders are a nonprofit organization established and managed by volunteers. It is through the dedication of members that they are able to meet the needs of their players and offer an enjoyable experience for all. The Reston Raiders Hockey Club wishes to instill in each child a love for the game of ice hockey, the ideal of fair play and sportsmanship, and the development of personal and social skills. The Raiders exemplify the principles of USA Hockey and through excellence in coaching develop the finest youth hockey players possible. The Raiders provides a fun environment for players of all ages and playing abilities, levels of commitment, with equal opportunity for all. The Raiders skate out of the SkateQuest of Reston rink located off Wiehle Avenue. In addition to hockey development programs sponsored by the Raiders, SkateQuest has its own slate of skills clinics and skating instructors. In the winter, you can find the youngest Raider players skating at the Reston Town Center rink. The club offers full services for players of all ages and skill levels. Wherever your child is in hockey, the Raiders can help him or her reach the next level. They offer an excellent Initiation Program for new players ages 5 to 11, an in-house program for players seeking a recreational-level of competition and a travel program for players seeking a more competitive level of play. 48

The Raiders Initiation Program teaches the basics of playing the game, including stick handling, passing, shooting and team play. Children who have completed Initiation are ready to join the club’s inhouse league. The House Program provides a fun environment for the recreational player. All games are played against other Raider House teams. Select teams are chosen from the House Program for players who want a slightly more competitive experience, with limited travel. The Raider Travel Program fields teams in the Tier II Chesapeake Bay Hockey League (CBHL). Tier II offers more advanced players an opportunity to play against the most competitive players from other clubs in the Washington, DC, area and beyond. Raider teams have historically competed for top honors at all levels of the CBHL. Another fun program the Raiders participate in locally is in the Washington Capitals Mites-onIce. Between periods of the Washington Capitals home games the Fan Development Department coordinates a three-minute on-ice scrimmage featuring children who play in the Mite age bracket. The games are refereed by The Caps mascot Slapshot and players get to wear an authentic Caps jersey while they skate. The games are fun for players and fans alike. RESTON CAMP EXPO

2017‌

CONTRIBUTOR: Eileen Boone, RCC Leisure and Learning Director

B IGG E R and

What seemed to be missing was widespread knowledge of these activities and, in particular, awareness of the transportation and scholarship opportunities that exist to support our young community members. As a result, the group developed the Reston Camp Expo – a resource fair featuring dozens of County and non-profit organizations to provide key information on camp programs, outof-school activities, registration dates, transportation options, registration fees and applicable scholarships and fee waivers, and even summer employment and volunteer experiences. Hundreds of families now attend this annual event to learn about the fantastic youth programs available in our area, to meet staff, to engage in games and craft activities, and to plan and prepare their summer calendars. In 2017, the Expo is expanding the number of exhibitors to include non-profit sports leagues and clubs. Nowhere else can you find all of your local camp providers, youth sports and activity resources in one convenient location! 50

BETTER

Several years ago, with insightful encouragement and involvement by esteemed Reston founder, Bob Simon, a network of Fairfax County agencies, non-profit and community organizations gathered to discuss and collect data on out-of-school opportunities for school-age children in Reston. The purpose was to assess not only availability but also accessibility related to age, location, transportation, fees and scheduling. The group discovered many educational, healthy and enriching programs occurring throughout the year and particularly during the summer season.

The Power of a

THIN MINT CONTRIBUTOR: Ashleigh Dorfman

Troop 5424

RTC Holiday Parade

Bagged Meals for Embry Rucker

On a chilly afternoon in January, an enthusiastic 5th grader walked in her Reston neighborhood and knocked on each door to ask a familiar question “Would you like to buy some Girl Scout Cookies?” She had passed other cookie-selling Girl Scouts on her walk and strategically decided to start her quest at the other end of the street to avoid conflict. At each house, she greeted neighbors with a smile, made eye contact and asked for their support in a loud, clear voice. People were eager to buy their favorite boxes of Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs and more; share their Girl Scout memories; or politely decline. For all responses, the Girl Scout said “Thank you.” Back at home, she carefully tallied the number of boxes she had sold and the amount of money she would collect at delivery. At her next troop meeting, she shared her success— her 35 boxes contributed to the troop goal of 1000 boxes. Proceeds from the cookie sales would be donated to the annual giving campaign, “Share Your Love of Girl Scouting”; applied towards their Bronze Award, for which they had designed a Book Hospital and donated their favorite books to the Hunters Woods ES library; and paid for their recent outdoor adventure to celebrate their cookie success.

The Girl Scout Cookie program is much more than about cookies; it’s about developing critical life skills. When girls sell cookies, they learn interpersonal skills, as well as goal setting, financial literacy, team work, decision-making skills and more. In other words, your cookie purchase supports the Girl Scout mission of “building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.”

That’s the power of a Thin Mint! The Girl Scouts began over 100 years ago with one woman, Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low, who believed in the power of every girl. To learn more about this amazing organization, please visit the Nations Capital council web site at www.gscnc.org. Ashleigh Dorfman is a Reston mom of three daughters, Troop 5424 Advisor and Hunters Woods ES Troop Organizer. 52

A Conversation

w/ Gina Bewersdorf, owner, Goldfish Swim School www.goldfishswimschool.com

Q How did you decide to open a swim school in Reston? A Though my husband and I live in Michigan, we both fell in love with the DC

suburbs as young adults. I spent the summer between first and second year of medical school doing research at NIH, and my husband spent a lot of time in the DC area following law school. When we decided to open a Goldfish Swim School franchise, looking for the perfect location in a DC suburb was the obvious choice to us. What made you select the ‘Goldfish’ instruction model? Our oldest child wanted no part of swimming, despite us taking him to organized swim classes from the time he was 9 months old. When he turned 3, we heard about Goldfish Swim School. I must admit I wondered what this swim school could offer that others couldn’t. The minute I walked in, I understood. Our son was called into class with enthusiasm by the deck teacher! When our son realized that the water was warm, he sat on the edge of the pool and participated in class. By the 4th lesson he was about at the push off the wall and swim out 5-6 feet towards the instructor. We were witness to the strength of the curriculum and positive friendly environment that Goldfish Swim School offers. Was it difficult to find a great location? How long did it take to build the space out? Yes, it was difficult. We were so lucky to find a building in Reston that fit all the criteria needed to build Goldfish Swim School. The building needed to be the perfect shape and offer enough space. Besides providing the best swim lessons, it was important to us that the parents would be comfortable in the lobby while watching their children in the water. It took over 9 months to achieve the proper permits and build out the space. We absolutely love Reston, its’ strong sense of community and the wonderful people we have met. What do you enjoy most about helping kids learn to swim? Swimming is a potentially lifesaving safety skill that everyone must know. Having the ability to provide an environment and be part of an exceptional team that

54

teaches children how to swim is an incredible source of pride for my husband and me. What ages do you teach? Any parent/child swim classes? We offer year-round swim lessons for children ages 4 months—12 years old in a pool heated to 90 degrees. We offer parent and baby classes, with a maximum of 6 parent/child teams per instructor. Our lessons otherwise have a child to instructor ratio of 4:1 at the maximum. For our students that have mastered basic swimming strokes, we offer Goldfish Swim Team classes. Do you teach kids with special needs? We teach children with all ranges of special needs. We make every effort to find the best fit for each child. Do you offer birthday swim parties or events? We love to celebrate birthdays at Goldfish Swim School! We offer 2.5 hour parties on the weekend, in which you have sole use of the facility. We provide life guards as well as party coordinators who take care of all of your needs so that the day is fun for everyone. What are your hours? We are open every day, and offer classes in the morning, afternoon and evening Tuesday through Sunday. Check our site for specific details. Do you offer tours? Can we try a class? We love giving tours! We offer a free trial class to any child who has not swam with us previously. Thank you, Gina for telling us about Goldfish Swim School! You have such a warm, friendly place here! AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

... a Mom Around Reston In September, I earned a new title: Mother of a Middle Schooler At back to school night, I bought a gym uniform, hustled to meet seven teachers with three minutes in between class periods, and listened to details about “service learning.” The concept involves teaching kids to give back to their communities in a positive way. I’m all about being proactive as a parent, but I feared the requirement meant I’d be in the car for even more hours each week. Instead, I realized we could increase our participation with Cornerstones’ events we already support. For the last few years, my kids, Bubba and Riley have joined members of our church in November to form an assembly line and fill over 50 Thanksgiving baskets with groceries that go to Cornerstones’ families who couldn’t otherwise afford a nice holiday meal. It’s amazing to see our sanctuary transformed into a food bank. At the head of the line, several people reinforce the bottoms of moving boxes. Next, volunteers stop at each station to add bags of sugar, salt, flour, and instant mashed potatoes. Then come the canned goods: cranberry relish, pumpkin pie filling, vegetables, and jars of gravy. Once the boxes are so heavy that volunteers slide them along the carpet rather than lifting them, we add Safeway gift certificates to cover the purchase of a turkey or other substitute. Several folks inspect the boxes before sealing them. Perhaps this year, we’ll step up our involvement. We could help organize the event, shop for the groceries, and deliver boxes to Cornerstones or even distribute them directly to families. Aside from the Thanksgiving basket drive, Cornerstones holds other events throughout the year to collect backpacks, coats, and food items for Cornerstones’ families. Tickets to the Capitol Steps Fundraiser or Embry Rucker Memorial Golf Tournament practically sell themselves in our politically minded and physically active community. I hope Riley will meet many middle and high school students who share her concern for homeless people in Reston through her increased involvement with Cornerstones. This mother of a middle schooler will try to hang back and watch a fledgling citizen who Wendy Besel Hahn has a chauffeur at her beck and call. www.wendybeselhahn.com @wendybeselhahn
