Proud to be 2016 GRCC ACE Small Business of the Year

“It’s the Best Time of the Year.” …a time for giving, a time for appreciation, a time for reflection, sometimes it’s a time for change. The holiday season brings much joy to all ages. We look forward to the opportunity to spend time with those we love celebrating traditions and family. The holidays are also a time to remember those who may be less fortunate. If possible this holiday season, give a little time to those in need, whether it be delivering food and necessities to families, donating to a charitable organization, wrapping gifts, or serving meals at a local shelter. There are many ways, both big and small you can help out. One of the things I appreciate so much about Reston is that we are a community of thoughtful givers. For a list of charitable organizations with volunteer or donation opportunities, be sure to review the list of Reston based charities on page 82.

In The Know explores the “hidden gems” of Reston—people, places and things known only to a few people —and shares their stories with Around Reston readers so that others can also be “in the know.” Now you Know!

IN THE KNOW! HOMETOWN HOLIDAY PARADE

When I was a child, my mom baked homemade pumpkin pies each Thanksgiving morning; I would have a slice—piled high with cool whip—while watching the Macy’s parade on TV. With each bite, I dreamed of visiting New York City to see the hot air balloons and spectacular Broadway performances. It’s still on my bucket list but really not a priority. I found a way to experience the thrill of the Parade without leaving Reston. For 27 years, the Reston Town Center has hosted a holiday parade the morning after Thanksgiving. Not any parade, our holiday parade has large Macy’s style balloons that tower up to 50 feet high as they are guided along the route, as well as musicians, dancers, antique cars, elected officials, first responder vehicles and local community groups; the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus in a horse driven carriage marks the parade finish. According to Myers Public Relations, the Reston-based firm that produces this outstanding annual event, approximately 1300-1500 participants walk in the parade while another 10,000-12,000 people watch from the grand stands and sidewalks along Market Street. But that’s not all. It’s the 4th Best Holiday Parade in the US—ahead of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade—according to a 2016 USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Amazing! Over the years, my daughters and I have participated in the Reston Holiday Parade; as Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors as well as a Reston Youth Association (RYA) Cheerleader. It’s always fun to hold our group’s banner, throw candy canes to the kids and wave to other friends in the crowd. Last year, the RYA Cheerleaders performed in front of the Grand Stands, including Mistress of Ceremonies and hometown girl Angie Goff of News Channel 4. It was an incredible honor for my then 11-year-old. Afterwards, we buy hot chocolate and watch the remainder of the parade. An estimated 44 million people travel over Thanksgiving weekend. That’s a lot of people. If you would like to avoid the chaos of crowded airports or bumper-to-bumper highways, then consider spending Thanksgiving in your hometown; out of town guests are optional. Ashleigh Dorfman is a Reston mom of three daughters and enjoys exploring our community.

A Small but IMPORTANT Part of History Fairfax County traces its history to 1742 making this year its 275th birthday. Reston as a community goes back to 1964, just over half a century. Although Reston has been around for little more than 20 percent of the lifespan of its County host, it has had a significant role to play in the County’s history. Today we know Fairfax County as one of the richest counties in the nation with a population of nearly 1.2 million residents. While Fairfax County was large in land area in its beginning with Arlington and Loudoun Counties and the City of Alexandria being carved from it, its population remained modest until early in the 20th century. The County’s population was 12,320 in 1790 and by 1930 it had increased slightly more than double to 25,264. From that puny growth in its first 140 years, the next 70 years saw a County’s growth spurt beginning with world wars and federal government expansion from 40,929 in 1940 to an estimated 1.2 million today. Within that accelerated County growth was the growth beginning in Reston in 1964. Reston’s growth followed the same pattern that Fairfax County had seen in its history: slow and modest growth in the beginning to a steep and strong growth in recent years. There are other features that Reston provided to the County beyond the number of people. Robert E. Simon, the founder of Reston and for whom the community is named, brought an entirely new attitude to community development. Beyond fair housing laws that required that housing be open to all races, Simon was openly marketing housing to minorities. As he pitched his proposed development to County supervisors who had to approve his plan, no laws or regulations then on the books would encompass what he had in mind. It was necessary to go to the state legislature to get authorization for a “planned unit As Russ Banham described in development” or PUD that would encompass his book, The Fight for Fairfax: his plan for common land ownership, villages, A Struggle for a Great American and mixed uses. His plan for community County (George Mason University development has now become the rule rather Press, 2009), the history of than the exception it was in the beginning. Fairfax county “is the story of a remarkable place that lies at Fairfax County went through many periods the junction of the Old South of consternation and political upheaval in the and the New South. In just sixty 1960’s and 1970’s as it wrestled with if and years, this place—Fairfax County, how population growth would be permitted Virginia—has awakened from the and how infrastructure would be provided. centuries old remnants of tobacco Through that time Reston showed the way as plantations and dairy farms to how growth could be accommodated while to become the technological maintaining quality of life and protection of leader of the New South…Fairfax the environment. Appropriately Bob Simon’s County rivals Silicon Valley as first village center on Lake Anne is on the a technological haven, but it national registry of historic places. surpasses its California cousin in most quality of life respects. This vibrant economic hub is blessed with modern industries, high paying jobs, superior public schools, great housing stock, high educational attainment, a multicultural workforce, low unemployment, and superb medical facilities. And yet it could have turned out much differently.” 4

And to the remarkable story of the success and growth of Fairfax County we must add the critical role that Reston played in that history. Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum represents the 36th District, including all of Reston, in the Virginia House of Delegates

Reston Community Orchestra celebrates 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY! In 1964, when Robert Simon founded Reston, he did so with a particular end in mind. Bob Simon’s goal was to build a community with a wide range of cultural opportunities and to give the community time to enjoy them. By 1987, Reston had developed a vibrant arts community. There were choral groups, a theater company and a ballet troupe. However, there was no hometown outlet for instrumental musicians. Joellyn Kinzer, a cellist living in Reston decided to change that. She invited several string players and choral director and organist, Adair McConnell to her home to discuss forming an orchestra. The Reston Chamber Orchestra was born. The group rehearsed in various churches around Reston, attracting new members who were rediscovering and honing their musical skills. The Reston Chamber Orchestra’s first performance was in 1988. No admission fee was charged, a practice that continues to this day.

Each season the Orchestra presents five concerts. All are free and open to the public. The first concert of this 30th Anniversary Season will be on Sat, November 11th at the Reston Community Center— Hunters Woods. The concert will be a tribute to Veteran’s Day and will feature patriotic music by American composers. The Holiday Concert on December 9th is a play and sing along event giving community members an opportunity to lend their playing or singing talent to traditional holiday favorites. The RCO celebrates the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr on January 13th. Visit the orchestra website, www.restoncommunityorchestra.org for more information.

During the early 1990s, the orchestra added brass and woodwinds to the mix, allowing the group to play a wider variety of music. In 1995, Maestro Dingwall Fleary came on as music director. Under his direction, the orchestra began to search out different performance locations as both the orchestra and the audience was growing in size. For many years, the Hyatt Regency Reston offered the orchestra their lobby for performances. Before his passing in 2015, Bob Simon was a regular audience member at Reston Community Orchestra venues.

Over the years, the orchestra has had the privilege of premiering several works by composers such as David Ott and Reston native, Brian Scarbrough. Many soloists have joined the orchestra, bringing an extra level of excitement to both the audience and the musicians. In 2005, the Reston Chamber Orchestra outgrew its “chamber” designation and changed its name to the Reston Community Orchestra. The Orchestra is composed of nearly 70 volunteer members. Most are not professional musicians, but pilots, engineers, IT specialists, teachers and government employees. The members are drawn together by their shared love of music and the process of creating something greater than the sum of their individual parts. Because of the need for a balanced sound, playing members are added through the approval of the Music Director. Information about joining RCO is on their website. The RCO encourages the participation of student musicians as part of its mentoring mission. CONTRIBUTOR: Linda Ackerman 6

THESPIANS COME INTO THEIR OWN

HIGH SCHOOL

Restonians are fortunate—our area overflows with opportunities to enjoy local theatre crafted by people that we know from our community. When it comes to the performing arts, we have ample opportunity as adults to re-engage with the magic of make-believe. But for many of us, our first exposures to theatre came in high school, where we tried out for the school play or helped friends memorize their lines at lunch. It started from the ground up—as children, we performed in the mini-communities of our high schools, which allowed us to launch onto the bigger stages. Our school theatre departments represent our communities on a small scale.

Photo credit for all photos: Greg Bright

The theatre department of South Lakes High School, helmed by the venerable Maria Harris for decades, will be producing Almost, Maine in November. An anthology of different love stories set in a fictional small town in Maine, the play allows the director to utilize many of her students, both on stage and behind. With a large cast of 19, Harris notes that “…everyone is incorporated,” and students of technical theatre and acting are all able to participate. She felt it was an “easy choice” for this reason, and also wanted to “…recognize [a] phenomenal playwright.” A story about intersecting relationships in a close community, Almost, Maine reflects in its structure the role theatre can play in our own lives. Shows are scheduled for November 16-18, and tickets can be purchased either online at www.southlakestheatrearts.org or at the Will Call table prior to a performance at the school. At Herndon High School, a Shakespearean shake-up is planned. Also, in November, Raphael Schklowsky, the school’s theatre director, will be launching his vision for Twelfth Night. The creative twist of the production is its’ Roaring Twenties settings—the ultimate decade of entertainment. Schklowsky asks us to picture The Great Gatsby when thinking about his vision: “It will be full of jazzy motifs, smoky sepia lighting, and a whole lot of androgynous comedy.” A recent transplant to the area, the director sees theatre as being “at the heart of any vibrant community, and only through creating and sharing my art do I feel that I am truly a member.” Twelfth Night will be running from November 10-12 and 16-18. Tickets are available at the Herndon High box office on the date of a performance or can be bought online at www.herndondrama.org. Many of our passions and values start when we are young, and theatre is no exception. Strong school programs nourish not just individuals, but the communities they live in. With a smorgasbord of opportunities—NextStop Theatre Company and the Reston Community Players both have homes in our neighborhood—there is no better time or place to engage in theatrical development for yourself and your children. BOOK REPORT

ABOUT THE AUTHOR, KWAME ALEXANDER Local writer, Kwame Alexander is a poet, educator, and the New York Times Bestselling author of 24 books. Kwame believes that poetry can change the world, and he uses it to inspire and empower young people through his Writing Workshop. The Kwame Alexander Papers, a collection of his writings, correspondence, and other professional and personal documents is held at the George Washington University Gelman Library. Kwame writes for children of all ages. Kwame didn’t grow up wanting to be a poet. In fact, as a kid, he didn’t even like to read. It wasn’t until he got to Virginia Tech and studied creative writing with poet, Nikki Giovanni that he caught the writing bug. In 1995, he published his first book of poetry and set up his own book tour, sleeping on friends’ couches and reading in churches. In 2015, his book Crossover, a novel in verse that captures the rhythm of basketball and the emotions of middle school, won the Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, the Coretta Scott King Author Award Honor, The NCTE Charlotte Huck Honor, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, and the Paterson Poetry Prize. Some of his other works include THE PLAYBOOK: 52 RULES TO HELP YOU AIM, SHOOT, AND SCORE IN THIS GAME OF LIFE; the picture books, ANIMAL ARK, OUT OF WONDER and SURF’S UP; and novels BOOKED, HE SAID SHE SAID. In addition to writing, Kwame tours the world bringing his love for poetry and reading to classrooms and libraries, and inspiring children to say “I want to be a poet when I grow up!”

The one true light is his girlfriend, Chapel, but her parents have forbidden their relationship, assuming Blade will become just like his father. speech and effectively rips Chapel away forever. But when a longheld family secret comes to light, the music disappears. In its place is a letter, one that could bring Blade the freedom and love he’s been searching for, or leave him feeling even more adrift. CONTRIBUTOR: Scrawl Books, Reston VA www.scrawlbooks.com

Q & A

A Conversation with

Robyn McClure

Owner, Pinot’s Palette Herndon www.pinotspalette.com/dulles

Q When and how did you decide to open a Paint & Sip business?

A We started with our Mobile Studio in March

2015. Our studio and wine shop in Herndon opened mid-April 2016. The how is a long story, but the short version is that I came across Pinot’s Palette doing marketing research and thought how fun? I love art (an appreciation, NOT a talent), wine and entertaining. I was ready to start a business as my boys were ready to “leave the nest” so this was the perfect fit.

What do you like most about your job? Probably that it isn’t a “job” at all. It is a business. And it is MY business and allows me to be active in our community.

How do you decide what paintings to paint? This is a fun and stressful part of running Pinot’s Palette. There are so many great paintings to choose from. Learning what people will sign up for is not a science. I love when customers request paintings. We try to choose paintings that we know anyone can paint successfully.

What changes have you made in the business since you got started? We have made lots of changes actually. Some are adding more specialty classes like “Project Pet” and different size canvasses and open studios.

What are the industry trends in Paint & Sip businesses? The industry trends vary from Region to Region. The “sip” part of Paint & Sip is

14

regulated and from state to state is different. In Virginia, Paint & Sip is still emerging. There are companies that do events in public spaces, others that have a studio and what is known as a Paint Instruction ABC license allowing them to offer 2 five ounce glasses for free and even a full restaurant offering painting classes. Pinot’s Palette has a retail wine and gourmet shop so every event is also a fun wine, beer and cider tasting experience.

Do you serve food at Pinot’s Palette? We have a wonderful selection of meats, cheeses, crackers, spreads, chocolates etc. for purchase. We also partner with PJ Mulligans restaurant next door. Our customers can bring in food as well. Just not alcohol per our ABC license.

Do you have a favorite artist? I love Monet, but I don’t have a favorite per say. Our Pinot’s Palette artists are my true faves.

Do you have a favorite wine?! Oh that is hard, I am very seasonal—so when it’s warm outside I love a Sauvignon Blanc, and for the colder season I prefer Malbec. My current wine of choice is an Italian Primitivo!

RESTON’S USED BOOK SHOP:

A Community Treasure By Chuck Cascio

It has become a place to read, chat, listen to music, view the works of local artists, interact with local authors, bring (or take) kids to and, on one occasion in 2017, a place to get married. Yes, the iconic Reston’s Used Book Shop, a treasured landmark at Lake Anne Plaza since January 1979, conveys the sense that it actually belongs to the community. As such, Reston residents adapt it to their needs with, of course, the approval of Bud and Susan Burwell, who bought the shop in 1999 from founders, Sue Schram and Sue Wensell.

find something, the woman explained that when she was a little girl, her grandmother would take her to the shop. The woman was visiting Reston, and she wanted to spend some time at the place she had enjoyed so much with her grandmother.

“We want to keep the shop’s spirit alive,” says Bud. In pursuit of that goal, Bud and Susan provide a home for enriching events such as the monthly gathering of Reston Readers, a bluegrass music jam four times a year, regular meetings of its own book group, and many other activities.

Bud and Susan know a bit about meaningful personal history. They met in eighth grade at Lanier Intermediate School in Fairfax and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1969. They went their separate ways but kept in touch periodically. Then in 1986, Bud says, “I looked Susan up.” Three years later, they were married and living in Reston, Bud working as an itinerant special education teacher for Fairfax County Schools and Susan working as an IT specialist in various locations.

The shop’s openness has led to long-lasting relationships with customers, many of whom started visiting as children. “I love seeing little kids come in here,” Bud says. “They treat the place as their own, and they become excited about books.” Susan and Bud tell of a woman who spent a considerable amount of time browsing one day. When asked if they could help her

Susan had a thought: “I wondered if by chance the grandmother had an unused store credit from several years earlier.” Susan found the grandmother’s credit, and the woman used it to buy books in her grandmother’s memory.

Now the Burwells spend their time expanding their shop’s community appeal. Susan sums it up nicely: “We are committed to doing whatever we can to grow the number of readers.”

Eating Out Around Reston

Ariake Japanese Restaurant

Ariake Japanese Restaurant has been pleasing sushi lovers ever since opening its location in Reston’s Hunter Woods neighborhood. With convenient free parking, a sleek space, and a tasty Japanese menu, it’s a local gem for lunch and dinner. When the previous fast food restaurant moved out in 2007 (after battling to open a drive-through), Ariake moved in and immediately established a following. Diners can enjoy their meal at the sushi bar, the glass-walled dining room, or the lovely outdoor patio. With an extensive sushi menu plus a nice selection of tempura, grilled, and noodle dishes, there are plenty of options for repeat visits. The generous bento, with 11 combinations to choose from, is an excellent value for a filling lunch. We like the lightly breaded shrimp and vegetable tempura with salmon or chicken teriyaki. Sushi and sashimi fans will find a lot to like on the Ariake menu. The Deluxe Sushi Lunch is a nice way to sample several of the fresh fish on offer. Teriyaki plates and a selection of noodle dishes will please palettes that prefer cooked items. My husband and I appreciate a warm and welcoming dining space, and Ariake delivers with three nice options. The bright, wood-filled dining room can be noisy during the busy lunch hour, however the tone is more subdued at night. Sushi bar seating is perfect for solo diners or folks who enjoy watching the sushi chefs at work. When weather allows, our favorite space to enjoy a meal at Ariake is the outdoor patio. A low wall, a row of bushes, and a small, pleasing waterfall border the seating area. These separators do a good job of blocking the parking area and traffic passing on Glade Drive. Ariake is a favorite spot for family meals and small group get-togethers. A meal at Ariake offers delicious, fresh food, attractive dining spaces, and plenty of parking, in a local, independent restaurant. That’s a perfect Reston combination. www.ariakerestaurant.com Julie McCool, Editor www.funinfairfaxva.com

FALL/WINTER 2017 25

The ‘Bike Squad’ The Reston station of the Fairfax County Police Department rests just a block from Reston Town Center in a modern, brick-faced complex. There are many task forces, teams and personnel in the Reston station, but of particular interest is the Neighborhood Patrol Unit (NPU)—commonly known as the ‘Bike Squad.’ Anyone who frequents Reston has likely seen the officers patrolling on the Trek and Cannondale bikes, interacting with the community (particularly National Night Out held the first week of August) and making themselves more approachable among Reston’s paths, trails, and commerce centers. What makes the Bike Squad particularly special is the varied mission of the unit, and the well seasoned officers who compose it. Unlike regular patrol officers, the NPU is essentially ‘the Swiss army knife of the station,’ according to Private First Class Adam Mancini. Make no mistake; this team does not get the short end of the stick in terms of assignments. On the contrary, they assist criminal investigations, the Gangs Task Force, and form a major component of the Retail Anti-Theft Team. The Bike Team even goes as far as providing personal business cards to store managers and merchants during the holidays to expedite response time—better securing the communities businesses and protecting consumers. The biggest difference between the NPU and patrol officers centers on the Bike Teams ability to follow an incident/ case from start to finish. Where most patrol officers arrive at a scene, deal with the situation, write a report and hand it off to another group, the Bike Team regularly follows up on Lt Matt Dehler, Ofc Landon Hopson, MPO Ryan O’Connor, leads, suspects, and victims on a good and PFC Adam Mancini number of their encounters.

26

AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

As for how the NPU is able to handle so many diverse responsibilities and provide the embodiment of community policing, it boils down to the quality of the officers in training and in character. The Reston NPU is composed of one supervisor and six officers, and unlike other NPUs in the county, Reston’s team is remarkably low on turnover—two officers, Master Police Officer Steve Depue and the team leader, Second Lieutenant Matt Dehler—have served for over 20 years. Lt. Dehler is well seasoned in policing and takes the job seriously. He enjoys the autonomy the Bike Squad has in how they serve the community, and readily points out that the NPU is one of the best jobs in the force. Master Police Officer Ryan O’Connor has 17 years of service. After a few years of patrol, Officer O’Connor wanted to try something new and put in for consideration for the team; he’s loved it for 7 years. Private First Class Adam Mancini and Officer Landon Hopson bring over a decade of policing to the team. Officer Landon Hopson is the newest to the team, serving on the NPU for one year so far. He likes the NPU team, and looks forward to the exciting and effective work that lays ahead. There is challenging, additional training required of NPU officers. It is one thing to ride a bicycle; it’s a whole different task to enforce the law on one. The application process is very competitive. Generally speaking, officers must serve on the force for two years to be competitive, but that varies. There are over six applicants for every one opening on the team, and that is before they even reach the panel interview. The candidates must pass a 40 hour Bike Squad course that is hosted county wide, covering advanced tactics and teamwork, bike handling such as jumping curbs, riding through deep trails, in and around traffic, and going over the unique advantages of bicycle policing. Advantages bikes have over traditional cruisers (the NPU has a few of those to use as well) include mobility and discreteness— they can go anywhere and don’t make noise. It is a complicated course, and completing it finally allows an officer to serve on the NPU. The Reston Neighborhood Patrol Unit is a tight knit group of professionals, here to keep the community safe and help deliver on the ideals of Reston. When you see two NPU officers on patrol (they always ride in pairs) give them a wave or stop for a quick chat if they aren’t busy, you’ll certainly appreciate what our community protectors have to offer. CONTRIBUTOR: John Adams John Adams volunteers on the Reston Library Teen Advisory Board, works in Civil Aviation and enjoys writing stories supporting community.

ETHICS DAY 2017 Touching Lives and Shaping Future Leaders Ethics Day is a program that was initiated by one of Reston’s key business leaders, Charles A. Veatch, 25 years ago. Mr. Veatch saw an opportunity to bring the business community together with Reston’s youth to consider the importance of integrity in action. Mr. Veatch approached the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) to produce the program. Now, every year the GRCC teams up with South Lakes High School to take the entire Senior class off-site to the Sheraton Reston to spend a day learning about ethical decision making and how it will affect their adult lives. Ethics day has become a model for similar programs across Fairfax County and the region.

Advance Medical Directives… Don’t Leave End of Life Care to Chance An advance medical directive, also sometimes called a healthcare power of attorney, or living will, is a legal document that gives your named agent the power to make vital medical decisions, like life support and end of life care, when you are unable to do so. If you don’t have an advance medical directive to name someone you trust to oversee your care, important health care decisions may be placed in the hands of unwanted family members, doctors, or even possibly judges, who may know very little about you, your wishes,

and what type of care you would want. Having your instructions in writing is a gift to your loved ones. It can relieve a great deal of stress for them knowing they are carrying out your wishes. Leaders Around Reston

Ambassador (ret.) Dennis Hays President, Reston Citizens Association

I came to Reston in 1979, just back from my first assignment overseas with the Foreign Service. In those days going to a restaurant in Reston meant choosing between Fritzby’s and Roy Rogers. There wasn’t a toll road so I’d drive downtown on two lane roads past endless forests and cornfields. I moved away in 1981 for grad school, a town house in DC and then tours in Africa and South America. By 1992, I was married with kids and returning to the Washington area. There was only one place I wanted to be—Reston. The first Reston organization I associated with was the Reston Runners, a great group that promotes fitness for all ages and speeds. About five years ago, I became incensed over reports that the County planned to trash tens of thousands of books from our libraries and downgrade the professional qualifications of our dedicated librarians. That led to my joining the Friends of the Reston Library, who put on massive book sales and have donated over a million dollars to childhood reading programs, speakers programs, upgraded furniture and equipment and provided help for under supported libraries in the region and internationally. More recently, as I sat in traffic going nowhere, I realized that all the infrastructure we are continually promised to keep Reston, well, Reston, wasn’t being built. Further, there was no real plan for it ever to be built. This led me to the Reston Citizens Association, which has been actively promoting the Reston ideal for 50 years. What do I take away from all of this? That informed and involved citizens do have a voice and can make a difference. Find what you are passionate about. I guarantee there is a group of like-minded Restonians that could use your help.

Mark Ingrao

President, Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce As a native Washingtonian, I have seen so much change over my lifetime including the development of Reston which I was introduced to in 1964 by my dad who was himself a builder. I lived briefly in Arlington and spent my formative years in Falls Church where I still reside. I attended St. James Elementary and O’Connell High School where I developed a passion for becoming engaged with my school community playing sports and being involved in student government. I attended Mary Washington College where I continued my involvement in student government as well as on the Honor Council. After graduating, I gained unique experiences working in the utility industry, the private sector and association world which would ultimately lead me to finding my passion, being a community steward. I wanted a career where I made a difference in my community, continually helping it to prosper and grow. After working for two different national organizations, I realized how much I missed the “community” aspect of my job, I started up my own lobbying firm. Shortly after that, I was approached by a former board member at the Reston Chamber and asked to apply for the job. Now, in my tenth year, I am able to work at my passion, giving back by helping the businesses succeed and prosper. My advice to anyone looking to run an association is if you work at your passion, you won’t work a day in your life.

Mayflowers at Reston Town Center— 30 years in the Reston community!

© Chip McCrea

The first seed of inspiration was planted when Reston resident, May Bernhardt, was a little girl growing up in Manila, Philippines. Everyone in her family gardened in their backyards. May enjoyed collecting orchids and roses. At a young age, May’s mother instilled in her that “everything you do must be neat and perfect so that you can outdo yourself to the best of your abilities.” This is the motto that shines through in May’s artistic floral arrangements and designs today. In 1978, May left the Philippines and moved to Seattle, Washington. Six years later, in 1984, she made another move, this time settling in Reston. Initially, May worked full-time in hotel and restaurant management while raising her three children. After working as a banquet manager for two years, she had established many catering connections. To show her appreciation to them, she created flower arrangements made with her special touch that she gave to them as gifts. The arrangements pleased her friends so much that they hired her to create floral designs for their events. This ignited a flame for a career change. May was now floral designer, event planner and business owner of Mayflowers! May opened her event and floral business in Sterling in 1987. Soon after that, she relocated to Plaza America off Sunset Hills Drive and stayed there until 2010, at which time, Mayflowers moved to Market Street in RTC. The store offers a welcoming respite brightening the Market Street/Democracy Drive connector with flowers and greenery. May has always been a strong advocate for community. In 2012, May organized the Reston Town Center Walk to End Homelessness, which raised almost $6,000 for Reston Interfaith (now Cornerstones) in its first year. All proceeds that were raised from the Walk were given to Reston’s Embry Rucker Center. Though May has discontinued the Walk, she continues to give back to the community in any way that she can. In 2013, May received the Reston Small Business Leader award by ‘Best of Reston’ for her many contributions. May says, “Receiving this award was a very humbling and heart-warming experience.” She believes that anyone who receives a civic award such as this must give back more to continue to make a difference in the community and impress upon others that giving back is important. May is excited to celebrate Mayflowers’ 30th anniversary this year, and she looks forward to the next 30! May would like to thank all of her loyal customers, her supportive family, and her hardworking staff members that help Mayflowers thrive.

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE

| PRENATAL | THAI

Choosing the Right Length Massage Session When scheduling a massage, two main factors will determine what length session you want to book. One is cost. Once you decide how much you are willing/able to spend, the next thing to consider is your massage goal. What you want to accomplish during your massage is important in determining how much time you will want to schedule. This general guideline can help you decide what session length is right for you. 30-45 minutes: This is great for working on one targeted area. For instance, you want to work the kinks out of your back/neck/shoulders that are tight after a long week of working in front of the computer, or your legs that are sore from running a race. 60-90 minutes: These are good options when you want a full body massage, but you have one or two areas that need targeted work.

120 minutes: This is a great option when you want a full body massage and have two or three areas that need focus. This session allows enough time to work those areas and still have time for a great scalp massage! Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither were the knots in your upper back. Sometimes multiple short sessions are more effective than one long session. If you need help determining the right session length for your needs, please don’t hesitate to contact me with your questions.

SAME DAY CROWNS In the past several years, new dental advances have changed the way that dental care is delivered. This is great news for patients and dentist alike. Chief among these new technologies is 3D milling. Over the past several years, Cerec 3D milling has quickly become the preferred method that dentists use to actually make crowns in one visit. No more sending them off to the lab and delivering your crown at the next visit. The result is that patients can be diagnosed and treated with their new crown on the same day. Not every dentist has this technology; in fact, less than 15% have the ability to mill crowns in their office while you wait. Make sure your dentist is using the most modern technologies to improve your dental experience.

HOW TO CONQUER THOSE WINTER BLUES Although we all enjoy the four seasons, the winter months can be particularly long and at times more difficult to endure. The days are shorter, the temperatures are frigid, and the holiday bills become a reality. Millions of Americans experience a significant drop in mood during the winter season. The extreme of this condition is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of clinical depression that occurs primarily in winter. The signs and symptoms of SAD include anxiety, feeling stressed, low moods and despair, lethargy, increased appetite, social withdrawal, irritability, and weight gain. Experts are still unsure of the exact causes of the winter blues. However, most studies point towards the reduced sunlight during those months. They believe that less sunlight in the winter not only disrupts our circadian rhythm, but also disrupts our melatonin balance. Additionally, sunlight stimulates the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that controls sleep, mood, and appetite, ultimately impacting our overall wellbeing. There are many evidenced-based strategies that can help us all conquer those winter blues. Putting these suggestions to practice could significantly help fight depression. • Get outside! We need natural sunlight. • Make your environment brighter (consider a light box). • Get exercise. • Reduce the candy and carb intake. • Listen to upbeat music. • Help others and give back. • Stay social by interacting with friends and family regularly. • Plan a getaway to a warmer place.

“When patients feel empowered with knowledge and resources, it magnifies their ability to persevere amidst hardship.” Dr. Hind Benjelloun My approach to treatment involves the development of an integrative, personalized plan. I treat a broad range of psychiatric conditions that include: Depressive Disorders Bipolar and Related Disorders Anxiety Disorders Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders Substance-Related Addictive Disorders

We Don’t Have a Crystal Ball

As temperatures drop in Reston we don’t have a crystal ball as to whether there will be any paralyzing snowstorms this winter. As we grow older, we don’t have a crystal ball as to whether our minds or bodies will change either. We all know folks who appear to be just as active at age 70 as their next door neighbors in their 20s and 30s. We also know those who might have some physical limitations, especially to safely navigate a snowstorm without assistance. When a snowstorm hits Reston it can often be an event that reveals physical and safety challenges associated with our older residents. In addition, it can present a wonderful opportunity to build community and develop a neighborhood support network for everyone. While the design of Reston’s clusters and neighborhoods makes it easy for residents to connect, oftentimes asking and offering to help may be challenging and intimidating. There are a few resources and suggestions that can not only make the threat of winter weather safer, but can also work towards making your neighborhood more connected. Offering to help can be a great opportunity to get to know neighbors who you might not know very well and help build a stronger community. These connections can deliver benefits way beyond cleaning out a driveway after a storm. There are dozens of examples of intergenerational connections in Reston, ranging from older adults tutoring kids in the neighborhood to families helping out older neighbors with more rigorous household chores. We don’t have a crystal ball to see what Mother Nature will deliver to Reston this winter, but with some intentional connecting in our neighborhoods and clusters we can be a stronger and safer community for years to come. Steve Gurney is the founder and publisher of Sourcebook, the Hunter Mill District Representative on the Fairfax County Commission on Aging, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County Erickson School of Aging Studies.

If you have a cluster or neighborhood email list or forum, consider asking if there are any neighbors who would like assistance shoveling snow or help in an emergency. Also, ask for volunteers to shovel snow. You might consider matching neighbors up as “snow buddies” in advance. Consider joining Nextdoor.com, a secure social network that has 92 distinct neighborhoods in Reston and thousands of members. This online resource is a great way to connect with nearby neighbors if you need a hand or want to offer some assistance.

AROUND RESTON— 2017 Fall/Winter Real Estate Market

The Reston real estate market has softened recently. Mortgage applications and buyer traffic is down. This could be seasonal as fewer homes are on the market this time of year or it could be an adjustment to our strong second quarter. That said, homes are still selling and buyers are still out looking for the perfect place. Last year 277 homes sold in the fourth quarter.

Average Sales Price to Original List Price Ratio: Home values have been increasing for most Reston homeowners. Does that mean they’re getting their asking price when they decide to sell? Not exactly. On average, sellers received just 97.5% of their original asking price. Fortunately, that’s not always the case. The right preparation and marketing can make a big difference. Many sellers achieved 100% or more of their original asking price last quarter.

Supply and Demand: So is it a Buyers Market or a Seller’s Market? Let’s see how things have changed over the last four years. Three months of supply is considered a balanced market, meaning it would take three months for all the homes today to be sold if no additional homes came on the market. This graph shows that we’ve had less than three months supply for the majority of the last two years giving Sellers a slight advantage. We’ll likely see this trend continue at least until next Spring.

Tim’s Tips 6 Reasons to Sell Your Home During the Holiday Season

TIM FINEFROCK

1. JOB TRANSFERS. People have to buy now as they are starting a new job in January. 2. CORPORATE BUYERS ARE STRONG BUYERS. They just want a nice home at a fair price and have little time to bargain hunt. 3. TAX REASONS. Some buyers and investors need to buy before the end of the year for tax reasons. 4. FEWER HOMES AVAILABLE. Less competition means buyers are more likely to buy your home. 5. HOLIDAY DECOR. Homes show better when decorated for the Holidays. 6. BUYERS ARE SERIOUS. Fewer people are just looking and the showings are serious buyers.

Reston is unique. If you live here there is a good chance you do so because you sought out this uniqueness. Reston was founded as a planned community and the plan has always called for a balance—a balance between work and play, between development and infrastructure, between nature at its rawest and the conveniences of the modern world. As a result, Reston is often cited as an example of what a community can be and consistently is rated as one of the top places to live in America. Reston’s original motto: Live, Work, Play served us well for many years. But the real spirit of Reston is revealed in our updated motto: Live, Work, Play and Get Involved. Restonians tend to be, or eventually become, joiners. We join sports leagues and clubs for ourselves and our children, Friends Groups for the Library, the Homeless Shelter, the Parks, etc., the PTA, political parties, civic groups, garden societies, Home Owners Associations and dozens of more organizations spanning the full range of human endeavor.

Get

Involved… the real spirit of Reston!

CONTRIBUTOR: Dennis Hays

We join not just to amuse or entertain ourselves, but with a conviction that through individual and collective effort we can make Reston better. And we do. But we also recognize that collective action is needed to preserve the ideals of Reston for our children and grandchildren. Over the coming months we will face a number of decision points that will profoundly affect Reston’s future. Decisions will be made about how densely populated Reston can become and still be Reston. About what kind of library we will have, about whether our Village Centers have a future and whether we are one community or a collection of smaller units separated from each other—by bumper to bumper traffic. These issues affect all of us and all of us have a right—and an obligation—to be informed and to form our own opinion as to what Reston will be to those who come after us. Fortunately, there are multiple organizations already up and running that produce timely and accurate information and take firm positions on issues—groups like the Reston Association, Reston 20/20, Reclaim Reston, Rescue Reston and the Reston Citizens Association to name a few. Find a group or groups that you can work with. And if you can’t find one you like, form your own. After all, that’s what Reston is all about.

Sunrise Square—Reston’s Latest Residential Development The first development in the Dulles Corridor to include a commitment of property to Reston Association for recreational purposes is Sunrise Square. It is being developed by Sekas Homes and is located on Sunrise Valley Drive adjacent to Reston National Golf Course. The community is located at the site of the former American Press Institute building, designed in 1973 by acclaimed 20th century architect, Marcel Breuer and the only example of Breuer’s brutalist style in Virginia. The Press building was torn down in 2016 under much controversy. Sunrise Square will consist of 34 townhomes and 10 condos. The 4-level townhomes feature a 2-car garage with entry to the first level rec room. The second floor includes an open kitchen/dining room, living room and a half bath. Buyers have the option of three bedrooms upstairs or two master suites. The top level includes a rooftop terrace with an optional outdoor fireplace. The end unit townhomes have an optional elevator. The model home opened in September, and the first owners moved in in October. The townhomes start in the mid-800’s;

the condos start in the low 500’s. Doug Marcinski, a representative of Sekas Homes, anticipates that the project will be finished by the end of 2018. The community is part of the One Reston initiative which seeks to ensure that the original planned community of Reston is preserved and sustained, despite redevelopment of the Dulles Toll Road Corridor office parks into urban residential mixed-use areas. In February 2017, the RA Board of Directors unanimously approved the Sunrise Square community to be part of Reston Association. With that, the property is subject to the Reston Deed and a new cluster will be created for the community. Some of the common areas of the community will also be dedicated to Reston Association, allowing all RA residents to enjoy the playground, trails, and parts of the common areas. Conversely, all residents of Sunrise Square will have access to all Reston Association amenities. The 1.9-acre open space portion on the eastern side of the property will become RA-owned parkland. The balance of the project’s land area will be HOA/Cluster land.

Preserving

OUR HISTORY Susann Gerstein

Reston Historic Trust and Museum is located in Lake Anne Plaza, the original Reston village which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in June 2017. The Museum opened its’ doors in November 1997. The initial idea for the museum came from Sarah Larson and Susann Gerstein, owner of Small Change Consignments. The two were inspired by the recent designation of Lake Anne Plaza as a Fairfax County historic district. The museum was established as a nonprofit organization to preserve Reston’s history. At the museum, you can explore the extensive collection of archives and exhibits reflecting Reston’s unique inception, architecture, culture and lifestyle. Whether you moved to this community in the 1960’s when Reston was developed or more recently, you will enjoy learning about Reston’s significant history and the many points regarding its’ development. Are you curious about your cluster’s builder and/or architect? Call or visit the Reston Museum, and they will happily try to find the information for you. Do you have memories of Tall Oaks Village Center but would love to see the original plans and pictures? The Historic Trust just might have them. Are you a resident and have old documents, plats, or house brochures? Consider donating the items to the Reston Historic Trust and Museum. Reston’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Didiano says, “Long time and new residents wander into the museum and discover what makes Reston a special community.” The goal, she says, is to “help visitors understand how Reston came to be and how it is different from neighboring areas. Reston is more than groups of houses, it’s a community.” Elizabeth mentions how visitors love searching for their home on the huge 3D map in the museum lobby.

Elizabeth Didiano

The Reston Museum offers many educational programs, community exhibits, walking tours and public events including the annual Home Tour in October and Founder’s Day in April. The museum also has a gift shop which sells original art, crafts and Reston signature items. When you visit Reston Museum, be sure to stay awhile and enjoy the documentary, Another Way of Living: The Story of Reston which will be showing on the TV screen as you enter the museum. The museum is predominantly staffed by volunteers. It is open Tuesday– Sunday: 12pm-4pm. www.restonmuseum.org

HISTORY OF THE USGS NATIONAL CENTER AT RESTON The John Wesley Powell Federal Building — sometimes called the “USGS National Center” — is west of the intersection of Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive. As a bureau of the Department of the Interior, the USGS’s mission is to provide reliable, impartial scientific information to all manner of customers — from land and water managers, national and state policy makers, other federal government and civilian agencies. Getting the USGS National Center situated in Reston was no simple feat. From its inception in 1879, one of the USGS’s concerns was to find building space to facilitate its’ workforce. Various locations were utilized in the District and by the conclusion of World War II, the USGS was scattered throughout 30 buildings at 20 different locations. It is possible that coalescing into a single location would not have occurred without the founder of Reston, Robert E. Simon, Jr. In post-WWII years, the USGS embarked on negotiations with Federal government authorizing departments to find a location for its National Center. In the fall of 1965, Robert Simon offered to donate 50 acres of land for a new USGS facility. Dr. William T. Pecora, then the Director of the USGS, wrote to then Secretary of the Interior, Stewart L. Udall, that, “It is my recommendation that we accept Mr. Simon’s offer of a site at Reston for the Geological Survey. In my telephone conversation with Mr. Simon this morning he emphasized that the parcel of land he would make available should be completely satisfactory to us with respect to area, shape, and location to permit the development of a fully useful and attractive facility.” In a site survey report submitted in February 1965, it was noted that, “The architects feel that the location at Reston and the site itself can provide an excellent location for the Geological Survey Headquarters.” As noted in the report, Reston was a favored location for a variety of reasons, not least of which was its “…established policy of encouraging those who work in Reston to live there, regardless of income level, race, color, creed, and national origin.” When the geological sciences were coming into their own as part of the national fabric of society, so too the USGS would become a part of Reston’s egalitarian model. The future USGS National Center was given a singular mention during the official dedication ceremony of Reston in 1966. 64

HOW THE USGS RELOCATED TO RESTON In August of 1973 over 2,000 scientists, administrators, and support staff found a permanent home at the John Wesley Powell Federal Building in Reston, Virginia. The National Center is home to over 2,000 USGS employees and houses portions of several other Federal agencies. Sharing space on the USGS campus are partner-members of the Department of the Interior from the National Park Service, the Business Integration Office, the Office of the Chief Information Officer, and the Office of Law Enforcement and Security, as well as members from the Department of Commerce. Responsibility for the Topographic Map Archive was transferred to the USGS Library in Reston in 2003. The Archive includes each U.S. state and territory, in all scales, editions and various printings. With coverage dating from the 1880s when the USGS began publishing standard topographic quadrangles; the Archive is the most complete collection of USGS topographic maps. The U.S. Antarctic Resource Center (USARC) in Reston is our Nation’s depository for Antarctic maps, charts, geodetic ground control, satellite images, aerial photographs, publications, slides, and video tapes. These resources are produced by Antarctic Treaty nations in support of their activities in Antarctica and provided to the USARC in compliance with a standing resolution of the treaty providing for exchange of information. Acting USGS Director, William Werkheiser has had a distinguished career with the USGS, both in field offices around the country and at the National Headquarters. Of the USGS location in Reston, he says “In many ways working for the USGS in northern Virginia feels like more than just a job. We have hundreds of dedicated employees who believe in being part of the community where they work, and fortunately Reston provides USGS employees a setting that offers a great work-life balance environment.” The history of the USGS John Wesley Powell Federal Building was an arduous one, but it is a symbol of what can come from dedication and community collaboration. CHEETAH CONSERVATION at Local Zoo Cheetah brothers, Fuli, meaning “very fast” in Swahili and Dash are two of the newest additions to Roer’s Zoofari. The two-year olds were born at the Metro Richmond Zoo, which has a world-renown cheetah breeding program. Since they are not currently part of a breeding program, Fuli and Dash have important jobs as species ambassadors for the fastest land mammal. Once found throughout Africa and much of Asia and numbering more than 100,000 animals, Cheetahs are now estimated to have declined to as few as 7,100. The largest population of cheetah live in Namibia and make up more than half of the total remaining population. The population decline for cheetah is the result of several factors that include depredation by other carnivores and farmers, hunting competition, and poaching. Leopards, lions and hyenas steal cheetah prey and kill cheetah cubs. It is estimated that between 1890 and 1990 10,000 cheetah were killed by farmers who were protecting their sheep and goats. Since that time, the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) has trained 5,000 farmers to use predator friendly livestock management techniques. These techniques include using special paddocks called Kraals during lambing and kidding season, and incorporate the use of livestock guardian dogs (LGDs). The LGDs insert themselves between the herd and the predator and bark loudly to scare off Cheetah, hyena or leopard. The CCF has placed 600 LGDs on farms in Namibia and throughout Africa and reduced annual moralities by 80-100%. Roer’s Zoofari is already home to a LGD; a Great Pyrenees named “Fox” who roams the zoo at night to ward off marauding fox and coyotes. Fox will begin making public appearances during the cheetah chats which will focus on conservation efforts of CCF. “Poor and starving people make poor conservationists. We support CCF because they create a win-win situation for African farmers and the Cheetahs,” says Zoo Co-owner, Vanessa Roer. Roer adds that starting in late 2017/early 2018, keeper chats will feature Fuli and Dash in action—demonstrating speed and agility as they chase a lure. The cheetah have a heated night quarters but will take advantage of their outdoor yard throughout the winter months. “Guests can expect great experiences on sunny days in late fall and into winter. The cheetah are much more active at these cooler temperatures than in the middle of summer,” Roer explains. Since Vanessa and Jacob Roer took over the Reston Zoo in early 2016, they have made a commitment to educate the public about conservation issues facing animals around the world. In addition to the facility’s own capital improvements, they have also made it a priority to support conservation work being done in the field to protect and study endangered species. To date, these organizations include the International Giraffe Conservation Federation, Cheetah Conservation Fund, the Peregrine Fund and Beadworks Kenya—Northern Rangelands Trust. 68

Reston Hospital Center is Growing! This year, Reston Hospital Center is breaking ground on a $72 million renovation and expansion, the second and final phase of its master facility plan enhancement. This second phase comes on the heels of the 2015 completion of the medical office buildings and other major renovations.

CONTRIBUTOR: Erin Echelmeyer

Reston Hospital Center’s recently completed expansion project included an 180,000 square foot medical office building and a new lobby for surgical waiting and Pavilion II, which created a seamless entry to Pavilion I, Pavilion II, surgical discharge, and outpatient testing. The Emergency Department went through a major renovation, including adding Reston Hospital’s pediatric ER, housing 5 dedicated pediatric beds to cater to the needs of local children. The hospital also added four additional operating rooms, 15 preoperative rooms, and 19 recovery rooms to the surgical services department to better serve the growing needs of patients and providers. The latest expansion plans include a state-of theart Intensive Care Unit and inpatient rehab, more patient rooms and an expansion and renovation of its Women’s and Children Services, including its Level III NICU. Reston Hospital will also be adding a second catheterization lab as it continues to grow both as Northern Virginia’s newest Level II Trauma Center and as one of the region’s only accredited chest pain centers with PCI. In addition to expanding and enhancing patient care areas, the facility plans include refurbishment to the lobbies, cafeteria and other patient support areas located on the main level of the hospital. A new visitor’s corridor and walkway will be built onto the front of the hospital allowing patients and visitors to conveniently walk from one end of the hospital to the other. A multi-level parking garage will also be built in front of the existing West Wing Entrance to allow for more convenient patient and visitor parking. Construction is expected to begin in late 2017 and last approximately 2 years. The team at Reston Hospital Center is incredibly excited for this project to commence as this is just another stepping stone of growing with the communities it serves. 70

‘Raised Reston!’ MARCO RANDO Growing up, Marco Rando and his family, were some of the original Restonians, moving to Reston in 1965. They lived first on Orchard Lane and later in Moorings Cluster. Marco was one of the many young kids who hung around Lake Anne in the 1970s. As a student, Marco was profoundly influenced by two teachers: John Tozzi at Lake Anne Elementary and Tony Debenedettis, his art teacher at Herndon High, who encouraged him to put together a portfolio and pursue his passion for art in college. Before his senior year in high school, Marco wanted to participate in a summer fashion design program at Parsons School of Design. Money was tight and, in his first step toward his life as an artist, he sold his beloved Camaro to pay the tuition. After graduating from Herndon High, Marco returned to his New York family roots to study art. He left Reston to attend Pratt Institute. After completing school, with a degree in Industrial Design, he came back to Reston, built a house for his father (off Inlet Court) and did some contracting work. Eventually, however, his heart took him back NY and his dream of being an artist. In time, Marco married and became a father. Since his career allowed for more flexibility than his wife’s, he opted to take on the Mr. Mom role and become the primary caretaker for his children. He worked evenings with other artists in the hotel industry, always continuing to work on his art. Marco spent many hours and days in New York art museums. Part of his dream of being an artist was to display in some of the most famous art museums in the world. One day, after an unfortunate twisted ankle, Marco came up with an idea; he carved a ‘crutch’ and used it as he entered the museum. Once inside the museum, he propped it by the works of some of his artistic idols. He had, in effect, ‘displayed’ his art in the Museum of Modern Art. This practice, which he calls ‘Kinetic Improv Exhibitions’ continued through the years as he created more ‘working’ sculptures. A handful of these pieces were a series of ‘strollers’ that he used to wheel his kids into NY museums, creating spontaneous exhibitions. The buzz over these displays was exciting and helped Marco to recognize his dream of displaying his art in famous museums. Then came 9/11 and his desire to leave New York City with his young family was stronger than his desire to be an artist in NYC. Upon returning to Reston, Marco continued to provide primary care for his children, volunteer with their schools and GRACE Art and doing contracting work on the side. A series of coincidences landed him as a substitute teacher. It wasn’t long before he was recruited onto the selective South Lakes IB Team to teach photography full-time. Suddenly, all of his passions came together. Marco went back to school to get his teaching certification. His role as a teacher is very different than his role as an artist, but he feels like he is meant to be teaching art. The fact that he is teaching art in his home town of Reston is an added bonus! “Life is magical, but we have to make the magic,” is one of Marco’s favorite sayings. He is making the magic right here in Reston!

CREATIVE CONNECTIONS

Enriching Your Life, Right Where You Are Reston Community Center is embarking on something new! The talented RCC team of instructors and programmers are bringing exciting offerings directly to you. The goal is to offer Reston residents and employees opportunities to explore unique, inspirational experiences without having to travel to RCC facilities. RCC is reaching out to business owners and residential property managers to host these opportunities onsite. From hand lettering and paint nights, to simple woodworking and gardening projects, these hands-on activities bring satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment with something to take home—they provide social gatherings with a creative twist. Participants will enjoy a leisure-time pursuit that results in immediate and long-lasting reward while tapping into Reston’s sense of community. If you work or live in Reston and would like to network and make friends while learning a new hands-on skill, please subscribe to our Creative Connections email list at www.restoncommunitycenter.com/subscribe to receive updates as new workshops are added. Accomplished artisans and creative experts who work with RCC are the best in the region and will provide all the necessary tools for you to learn a new skill to imagine, design and develop your own unique personalized project for yourself or to give to others. RCC is seeking host sites at residential buildings such as apartment/condo complexes or businesses. Hosts should be able to: • Provide onsite space appropriate for the workshop type in a 4-hour time block (includes setup/cleanup by the provider). • Determine if it is a private event for residents/employees only, or if it will be open to the public. • Choose a date that will maximize the benefit of resident/employee participation. RCC works to make these experiences as stress-free as possible for hosts by securing the instructor, registering the students, developing all promotional materials and handling the logistics. Workshop participants typically pay the registration fee directly to RCC but alternatives can be arranged if preferred, such as the venue or business underwriting the participation fees. Intrigued? Reach out to RCC so their team can visit your site, tour the facility options and consult with you about the best type of workshop to provide. If longer-term offerings are desired, they will work with you to meet that need as well. Whether it’s a creative skill workshop, fitness/wellbeing option, aquatic event or leisure program custom-designed for staff or residents, check it out and make the connection to bring RCC directly to you. For more information, contact RCC’s Collaboration and Outreach Director, LaTanja Jones at LaTanja.Jones@fairfaxcounty.gov or 703-390-6158.

SOUTH LAKES GRAD

Making an IMPACT Christy Winters Scott Christy Winters Scott closes her written correspondence with a signature phrase, “Best Swishes.” She does so with good reason: The “swish” of a basketball has been an integral part of her life as far back as she can remember. From her days as at Hunters Woods Elementary School through Langston Hughes Intermediate School, Christy played basketball at various levels in Reston youth leagues. Then in 1982, as a freshman at South Lakes High School, she became a starter for the varsity, and by the end of that season, she was being recruited by colleges. In 1986, the year she graduated, she led South Lakes to District, Regional, and State championships on the way to an undefeated season.

“I will never forget the thrill and feeling of complete bliss and accomplishment from that season,” says Christy, who has been the South Lakes girls’ varsity coach since 2005. Nor will she forget the avalanche of interest from colleges, as recruiters from 17 different schools visited her home. Christy wanted to stay fairly close to Reston, so she accepted a full scholarship from the University of Maryland, a decision she values greatly even today, and not just because she was a starter at Maryland all four years for teams that won two Atlantic Coast Conference titles and earned a trip to the Final Four in 1989. For Christy, basketball led to even greater lessons. “Playing for Maryland was truly a character-building experience,” she says. “I learned that my effort, energy, and focus were always in my control, and that my mind was my strongest muscle.” Christy has put her BA in Communications to good use over the years as a coach, the head of a summer basketball camp in Reston, lead analyst for the Big Ten TV Network, and Final Four commentator for ESPN. Whether coaching her South Lakes team, running her camp, or raising her own three children (she is married to Jerome Scott, another former South Lakes basketball star), Christy says she tries to impart a core idea into the kids she reaches: “I want them all to under stand that hope is an immeasurable quality. When you have hope in your dreams, you give hope to others to pursue their dreams.” Best Swishes, indeed. CONTRIBUTOR: Chuck Cascio, author of The Fire Escape Stories, Volumes I & II. South Lakes High School

Marching Band is Hawaii Bound By Kelsey Glass

The South Lakes High School “Spirit of Reston” marching band has been invited to march in the 2017 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade held in December. The band will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, where participating students will commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, along with honoring World War II veterans, the tragedy’s survivors, active duty military personnel and their families. “I am excited to see the students build connections to those who have served our country and to learn about the history involved in this event,” said Grayson Fore, Director of Bands. For this special occasion, Fore and the band commissioned an arrangement of the Armed Forces Medley, which contains hymns from every branch of the military. The band will also perform in a concert at the USS Missouri, where they will play music that reflects the parade’s theme – “remembering the past and celebrating our future.” Interested in hearing the band perform before they leave for their trip? Check them out at home football games, the 2017 Reston Holiday Parade in November, or the SLHS homecoming parade. Fore notes that another good opportunity to hear the group is at the Tag Day Concert on November 21, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the school theater. This event is free to the public. “The Hawaii trip is another major event and one of the first opportunities for our marching band to represent South Lakes and Reston on a national stage,” said Fore. “Our kids want to share with everyone what a terrific marching band we have, and support those who have served our country.” Taking many students, chaperones and faculty to Hawaii is no easy feat. Over the coming months, the South Lakes Band Boosters will be holding several events to assist in funding the trip. The band currently sponsors the Flags for Veterans Outreach Program, which enables students to support veterans in connection with Honor Flight Network while raising money for the trip. To learn more about the band and watch for upcoming events, visit southlakesband.org. 80

SLHS—Sparking Conversations through Art CONTRIBUTOR: Madie Evans

The South Lakes High School Art Department was invited to work on a political project with ARTspeaks, through the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax at 2709 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton. (www.uucf.org) ARTspeaks is an organization that was created in order to spark conversations in the community about relevant issues, through artistic expression. Their mission is to emphasize the significance of art appreciation, and

give opportunities for artists to share their visions. The topic for this project is red and blue states; artists are called to create a piece through any type of medium that conveys their emotions when they think of red and blue states. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation will host the exhibit which runs Saturday, November 4–30. An art reception will be held on Saturday, November 18.
