LIVING MUSEUM.

LIVING MUSEUM - 2021

Inspired by the Wardle Wood Specimen Collection, this new research museum of the University of Melbourne using site timber as tectonic language to create sensory spaces, and bring the museum back to its original site. IT'S ALL ABOUT TIMBER.

In traditional museums, the exhibitions about trees always move the specimens or cultural artifacts away from their i n d i g e n o u s l a n d t o f u l f i l l t h e r e q u i r e m e n t s o f t h e p u b l i c a n d t h e s o c i e t y. H o w e v e r, t r e e s s h o u l d n o t b e r e g a r d e d a s inanimate objects, but as witnesses to the story of loss, change and destruction. So, how should we treat trees?

INITIAL SPACES ARRANGEMENT SKETCH

This thesis project is about to display, preserve and activate the University of Melbourne Creswick Campus Historical Collection by bringing the research museum back to the campus arboretum. Inspired by the Wardle Wood Timber Specimen Collection, the museum treats existing trees differently by using imported Monterey Pine collected from the site to forms the architectural tectonic language and communicate with the existing native trees by creating different forests sensory spaces. Gallery space is designed as circulation to connect various campus functions such as Timber Workshop, Lab and Library and framing the museum as one part of the campus collection.

LIVING MUSEUM.

The section shows the method that the building touches the ground using timber pole foundation aiming to minimize the damage to the natural ground. The openings on the roof will create the opportunity of natural ventilation, which the tree will provide shading to the users.

THE SHAPE OF BORDEAUX. - 2020

This Winery is designed through the "less is more" method. The shape of Bordeaux capture the organic characterize of regional Yarra and explored the spatial and tectonic qualities of form-resistant structures.

The site is located at Yarra Glen suburb which occupying a large area of vineyard and the Denton house. The site is connected with the main road for two parts, and there has the water feature in between, so it will be a good opportunity to utilize the two-entrance road and the lake to create an ‘organic winery’. A foodbridge is create to allow visitors have the views of the surrounding and also to connect the gridshell landings.

One feature in this winery is the active bending timber gridshell structure which covering the outdoor space. The structure was generated and designed using Kangaroo plug-in and structurally analysed in Karamba of Grasshopper. The gridshell structure are well resolved when dealing with large space and light weight structure. The method to construct this gridshell is active bending which to bend the structure on site. This makes the construction process INITIAL DESIGN SKETCHES more natural and contributes to the organic topic of the winery.

This computational workflow shows how the gridshell is designed using kangaroo and the process to make it constructible in the real life. The cladding is also designed using ladybug plug-in and creating shading for the visitors according to the radiation analysis.

The landscape of the site has 4 metres difference. To correspond with this special site condition, the entrances are designed at different levels to create convenience for the visitors. The main entrance and carpark are located at level 1, and the visitors can enjoy a unique winery tour from the very end of the building to the centre of the gridshell.

NEXT DC DATA CENTRE. - 2020

A sustainable client-based data center aiming to achieve zero carbon objective and involves community functions into the zerocarbon loop to fully utilized the feature of the proposed site.

Site Boundary

Cutting the site at different angles to form the landscape for different users

Basic building forms according to the volume requirements

A welcoming data centre which is aiming to achieve zero carbon objective using the swimming pool and greenhouses to utilized the waste heat from data racks. The landscape invloved plaza also creates the unique experience for the data centre and surrounding communities.

This data center design proposed for Next DC was focus on the connection between the community and the technology data base. The architecture was decided into three parts according to the function, and two of them was used as data center while another one was used for the community activities.

The community building includes the greenhouses and swimming pool which not only designed for utilized the waste heat of data center but also to encourage the community engaged into the data center. The landscape which creates the level difference to allow the sunken plaza to collect the rainwater and used to cooling the data center. The design of architecture and the landscape was all contributing to the aim of zero carbon energy loop for this data center.

This diagram showing the energy loop within the data centre. The design of energy strategy aiming to achieve zero carbon emission which will contributes to the sustainability of the data centre.

WARM NEST IN MSD -2019

A sculpture generated using the computational design method creates the contrast between aggregation and the finished MSD building interior.

As the atrium in level 1 of MSD are mainly used as studying area which the function is quite simple. The space here was not fully used as student cannot get quiet studying area and enough relaxing space, and was considered as unimpassioned. Therefore, the aggregation was choosing to locate at here aiming to enrich the area and gives connection between the hanging studio and the student and the space.

GRASSHOPPER AGGREGATION RULESET

The idea of component design was derived from the feeling of flowing, and have hard boundary but soft inside and gives the expression of protection.

Material used for the primary component is metal which provides the structure of the whole sculpture, and the secondary component was using silicone with hard core inside to remain the shape but can be deformed at the same time. The sculpture aiming to provides resting area for students, but also to inspire students with more ideas in the future.

The generation of the nest is using recursive aggregation method by the application of computational design - grasshopper. The aggregation rules are introduced above and experimented several times to get the satisfied form.

The components will be connected with each other by creating the hump and at the same time creating the same hollow within the connection position of the component. Therefore, the components will be connected by align the hump and the hollow.

1. 3d print a mound for the primary/secondary component

5. Slowly Pour the silicone liquid into the mold box, waiting for the mixture to harden

2. Using 4 acrylic boards to form the mold box, seal the edges using hot glue gun avoid leakage

6. Remove the mold box, registration keys and clay, Brush the Vaseline oil above the first half of mold

3. Put the component in the proper place, filling the surrounding using oil based clay, smooth the surface and create registration keys between mold halves

7. Place a cone clay on the component at the highest point to create a hole for later casting.

Mix the silicone and pour into the mold box

4. Mix the silicone part A&B at ratio 100:100

8. After the silicone dries, separate two parts and remove the component inside. The silicone mold is ready for casting.

1. Re-assemble the mold and wrap it with plaster bandage in two directions to prevent the leakage inside

2. Mix resin liquid A&B at ratio 1:1. Add resin pigment.

3. Carefully pour the liquid through the prepared hole.

4. After 20 mins, take out the resin inside

2. Mix two parts at ratio at 100:100 and fully mix them up within 2 mins.

3. Wrap the flexible mixture around the 3D model and ensure there is no gap between.

4. After the mixture harden, cut a gap on the mold and remove the model inside.

5. Apply a layer of oil inside the mold and use the same material for casting.

6. Put the flexible silicone through the gap into the mold and squeeze out the redundant material to ensure there is no air inside

7. Take out the model after it finishes harden.

8. insert the wire to support and also allows the plasticity of the component

A super high-rise building achieved by concrete tube structure with steel frame fulfill the functional requirement of hotel and office.

The sie is located at Melbourne CBD, bounded by Flinders Lane, William, Market and Collins streets where the block is at the junction of plenty office building area and prosperous tourism area. The ground level on the Collins street is relatively higher than that of Flinders Lane, which give the potential to design podium into two levels for different street accesses.

Our structure is decided to be concrete tube structure with steel frame, including shear belts and outrigger. This kind of structure performs effectively for super high-rise building as it could well resist main vertical loads such as self-weight, super imposed dead load, as well as horizontal lateral load such as earthquake and wind load.

A hand-made model showing different stages in the progress of building construction.

The model shows one part of the Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences building at all angles, which consist not only the finished outcome, but also showing the stages for construction happened in the real life. For example, the scaffolding for the level 1 and internal suppporting structure for the lift are included in the model.

The whole model was hand made and also contains lots of real construction materials.
