About the Center

WE’RE GROWING! We are proud that over the past ten 5:0 ond years we have increased the 606 ay – F 0 p.m. number of patrons we serve rid Si by 75%. In 2013 the Center Cre xth St ay re sted welcomed over 33,000 people But et te through its doors with 624 separate events — 277 being produced by the Center alone. Of these, 57 were Center presentations, 158 rental events (for non-profits such as the School of Dance, Music Festival, Avalanche Center, High Country Conservation Advocates, Search and Rescue and the Public Policy Forum), 136 rehearsals and six school events.

There were over 20 Piper Gallery and Art Studio Receptions for local and regional artists. The Crested Butte Dance Collective held 52 classes serving over 650 dancers, in addition to conducting 146 rehearsals on the Center Stage. Their annual sell-out smash hit Move the Butte currently entertains over 1,000 dance enthusiasts. The Art Studio conducted over 90 days of instruction to over 500 budding artists at our satellite campus at 111 Elk Avenue, with several hundred more in private lessons, Shared Artist Space participants and art browsers to the gallery. Through our partnership with the Crested Butte Film Festival we offered 24 films to 857 film aficionados through the Monthly Film Series and hosted over 1,200 during the film festival itself. As co-sponsors of the Crested Butte Wine and Food Festival we helped educate and entertain 750 oenophiles. Our annual fundraising series, Tour de Forks, hosts almost 800 epicureans in private homes with dinners prepared by the region’s accomplished chefs.

As each day passes, we are adding more classes, more workshops, more opportunities for the visual arts, more invigorating performances in the arts. Through all of this it is our vision, our mission and our values that guide our every move.

SAT DEC 13 Blackalicious Blackalicious kicked off the Center’s last Winter Season with a sell-out show that had fans on their feet from the moment they stepped on stage.

Considered lords of the West Coast Underground, Blackalicious is an American hip hop duo from Sacramento, California made up of rapper Gift of Gab and DJ / producer SAT DEC 13 Chief Xcel. Gift of Gab, known as hip Blackalicious hop’s premier lyricist, flashes intellectually bent tongue-twisting, multisyllabic, and complex rhymes, while Chief Xcel’s classic, funky beats hold down the groove. Blackalicious favors what hip-hoppers call the “positive tip” where lyrics are spiritual and uplifting rather than violent or misogynous. Opening for Blackalicious is Daniel Bambaata Marley. As the grandson of Bob Marley and the son of Ziggy, Bambaata is third generation reggae royalty bringing his own modern blend of world, hip hop and reggae to the musical arena. 9:00 p.m. $20.

SAT DEC 20 Due West Christmas Playing a sold-out event with the Center last summer, Due West returns with a show of their very own Christmas originals to celebrate the season. A smash hit from the 2014 Crested Butte Songwriter’s Festival, up and coming country trio Due West is renowned for their tight, three-way harmonies and fresh tracks that sit on the cutting edge SAT DEC 20 Due of the Nashville sound. Comprised of West Christmas singer-songwriters Matt Lopez, Brad Hull and Tim Gates, their four albums have enjoyed Billboard, Mediabase and Music Row chart success while their videos have hit the Great American Country’s Top 20. Pull up your cowboy boots, strap on your Santa hat, and come enjoy this holiday celebration! 8:00 p.m. $30.

Multi-genre master Tony Furtado is gregarious, engaging and entertaining, Photo by Alicia Rose on and off stage. Called a banjo prodigy from an early age (and proving it by becoming a two-time winner of the National Bluegrass Banjo Championships), Tony’s musical arsenal also includes the guitar, slide guitar and his melodious voice. Fusing Americana, folk, indie-rock, blues and jazz, his creative interpretations and hybridizations of these genres is both high energy and captivating. Tony makes an exponential leap into the wide-open spaces of mythopoetic America, ascending from the folk circuit to the big leagues as an enthralling performer. 8:00 p.m. $20.

Back by enthusiastic and consistent popular demand, The MarchFourth Photo by Suzy Perler Marching Band sells out The Center every time. The MarchFourth Marching Band is a mobile big band spectacular, with original music anchored by funky electric bass, rocking guitar, a diverse percussion ensemble and brassy horn section. Inspired from an eclectic range of worldwide influences, the M4 experience becomes a journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the Gypsy camps of Eastern Europe to the African jungle by way of Brazil, echoing the deepest grooves of American funk, rock and jazz. That’s all boiled together and framed in cinematic fashion by costumed dancing beauties, high-stepping stilt acrobatics and many more theatrics. It’s an over-the-top explosion of performance, color and charisma. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 1/6: $25; Regular: $30.

SUN JAN 18 John Popper with Brothers Keeper

Harmonica virtuoso John Popper is best known as the Photo by Kirk Stauffer founder and poet- in-chief, lyric-belting frontman of jam band phenomenon Blues Traveler. With his trademark bandolier of harmonicas in 12 keys, he propelled the group through 14 albums (one just released in 2012), three of which garnered Gold status and two Platinum, all during a relentless touring schedule that has electrified over 6,000 live shows in the band’s 25 year history. Blues Traveler broke through Billboard’s Top Ten with “Run Around” which became a smash hit, winning a Grammy and breaking the record for most weeks on the charts. For this show he’ll be playing with Brothers Keeper, where his extensive use of segues, multiple song mash ups and instrumental jams will certainly shine through. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 1/11: $20; Regular: $25.

THU JAN 29 Ben Miller Band Wholly contemporary, while ringing with age-old echoes of bluegrass, delta blues, Appalachian mountain music and more, the Ben Miller Band cooks up a stew they lovingly call “ozark stomp.” The threesome’s fierce creative spirit produces roots-rocking barnburners, thoughtful ballads and left-field departures.

The band’s homespun, self-reliant approach extends to the lo-tech, and largely self-built, instruments that the members play - from Miller’s thrift-shop guitars and banjos; to bassist Scott Leeper’s one-string washtub bass (comprised of a weedeater string attached to a wooden pole); to Doug Dicharry’s varied arsenal of trombone, trumpet, mandolin, electric washboard and electric spoons. Their uniquely evocative ensemble won the attention of Rolling Stone Country as one of the best 20 things seen at the American Music Fest and they earned respect from ZZ Top opening for the 2013 Europe summer tour. Stand-up comedian Willie Barcena’s humor is infused with hilarious renditions of his experiences as a security guard, plumber, roofer, and limo driver. His highly acclaimed oneman show, “Cry Like a Man,” pulls inspiration from everyday life, making light of the struggle of the blue-collar worker in today’s society. Illustriously, Willie has made ten appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, in addition to performing with Leno for the troops in Afghanistan. His Comedy Central debut was received with rave reviews. Willie’s 18-years of comedy have included 12 years of stand-up road work, including multiple appearances on tours such as “Latino Laugh Festival,” and “Crown Royal Latin All Stars Comedy Explosion.” His two year run with The Morning Show on KSFM 102.5 Sacramento shot to the number one spot during his tenure. 8:00 p.m. $15.

Warrior poet lyrics. This is the fraternal synchronicity of Americana phenomenon, the Wood Brothers. Independently, Oliver played guitar and sang with Southern blues rocker Tinsley Ellis before founding King Johnson, a hard-touring group of blues-inflected R&B, funk and country. Chris, meanwhile, formed Medeski Martin & Wood, which over two decades became a cornerstone of contemporary jazz and abstract music. They are now joined by new full-time member Jano Rix, a drummer and ace-in-the-hole multi-instrumentalist. Their songs dance between bluesy, classic country and swampy funk, mining the brothers’ timeless influences of Robert Johnson, Willie Nelson, and Charles Mingus. 8:00 p.m.

Long recognized and praised as a creative force in acoustic music, bluegrass artist Claire Lynch is a pioneer of beauty, subtlety, and genredefying sophistication. She has used her richly textured voice to sing harmony on tours and albums with Dolly Parton, who describes her as “one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today.” She is a three-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) “Female Vocalist of the Year” award-winner (and 16-time nominee), received two Grammy nominations for “Best Bluegrass Album” and won “Song of the Year” from IBMA in 2014. As a songwriter, her ! tunes have been recorded by such luminaries as ATE D Patty Loveless and The Seldom Scene and she has HE ET V graced albums and the stage with Emmylou A S Harris, Alison Brown and Ralph Stanley. SUN MAR 15 An Evening with Marc Cohn After winning a Grammy for his soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis,” Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer-songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He’s a natural storyteller, balancing the exuberant with the poignant, and able to distill universal truth out of his often romantic, drawn-from-life tales. Cohn followed up his platinum-selling debut with two more releases in the 1990s, earning him an American Music Awards nomination for “Favorite New Artist” and a Grammy Nomination for “Best Pop Male Vocal Performance.” TIME Magazine called him “one of the honest, emotional voices we need in this decade,” and Bonnie Raitt SUN MAR 15 declared, “Marc is one of the An Evening with most soulful, talented artists I Marc Cohn know … I marvel at his ability to mesmerize every audience he plays for.” Also a guitarist and pianist, Marc has created seven albums, including “Join the Parade,” his most moving and critically acclaimed. FRI MAR 20 An Evening with Taj Mahal Composer, vocalist and master of the harp, dobro and guitar, Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent and influential figures in late 20th century blues and roots music. He began his career learning the styles of Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and other titans of Delta and Chicago blues. He rubbed elbows with greats like Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. Grounded firmly in these blues roots, Taj became fascinated in the origins of this music, and what path they took to reach their current form. Musical exploration became his hallmark, as his artistic scope grew to include a global perspective. Celebrating five decades of recording and touring that have nearly singlehandedly reshaped the definition and scope of the blues via the infusion of exotic sounds from the Caribbean, West Africa, Latin America and the Hawaiian Islands, the two-time Grammy-winning singer, nine-time nominee, songwriter, film composer, guitarist and multiinstrumentalist was feted with the “Lifetime Achievement for Performance Award” by the Americana Music Association. The Blues Foundation has named him “Entertainer of the Year,” and the Blues Music Awards granted him “Historical Album of the Year.” Through his 47 albums and 50 years of performances, Taj Mahal has truly become one of the legendary greats. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 3/13: $50; Regular: $60.

FRI APR 3 Telluride Theatre’s Jukebox Burlesque Sexy, funny, daring and delightfully scandalous, the Telluride Theatre’s House of Shimmy Shake is back, bringing its sell-out Burlesque to Crested Butte. “Jukebox Burlesque” is their newest show featuring traditional Burlesque that spans the musical eras of the strip-tease realm. With a full lap full of surprises, including boylesque, it’s a pastie-party … and you’re invited! It was the Victorian Burlesque of London from the 1830’s to the 1890’s that inspired the famed American Burlesque.

Dripping with music, ribald comedy sketches, and an ever-growing showing of skin, early 20th century vaudeville circuits of Burlesque were soon established creating a debut venue for actresses such as Fanny Brice and Mae West. The Prohibition Era marked the snuffing of the uninhibited atmosphere. Today’s Neo-Burlesque kicked off in New York and Los Angeles with a cult following in the 1990’s, full of nostalgia for the historic spectacle, focusing on the selfFRI APR 3 expression of the performer and the art of the Telluride Theatre’s tease. THU DEC 18 A Most Wanted Man Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last film is based on the bestselling spy novel by John le Carré. In this espionage-thriller, an escaped Chechnyan militant attempts to claim an inheritance, giving a German agent (Hoffman) the chance to lay a trap for a Muslim scholar who is suspected of financing terrorists. This is a story of American power.

Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright. Running time is 122 minutes. Rated R. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Film at 7:00 p.m. $10.

THU JAN 15 Point and Shoot Winner of the “Best Documentary Award” at the Tribeca Film Festival, Point And Shoot follows Matthew VanDyke, a 26-year-old who left home in Baltimore in 2006 and set off on a self-described “crash course in manhood.” He bought a motorcycle and a video camera and began a multiyear, 35,000-mile motorcycle trip THU JAN 15 through Northern Africa and the Point and Shoot Middle East. When a revolution broke out in Libya, he took up arms against dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was captured and imprisoned, and became an international media sensation. Please note this film plays at the Majestic Theatre, 507 Red Lady Avenue in Crested Butte. Running time is 83 minutes. Not rated.

From the makers of Fuel (which showed at the Crested Butte Film Festival in 2011) comes an eye-opening documentary that shows America’s addiction to oil — from its corporate conspiracy beginnings, to its current monopoly today — and explains clearly and simply how we can end it, and finally win choice at the pump. Pump shows us a THU MAR 19 variety of replacement fuels to fill up our Pump cars that are cheaper, cleaner, Americanmade, and which in the process will create more jobs for a stronger, healthier economy. THU APR 16 Tracks Tracks, starring Mia Wasikowska, tells the incredible true story of Robyn Davidson, a young Australian woman who in 1977 undertook a perilous solo trek across the stunning Australian outback. Accompanied only by her dog and four camels, she satisfies her craving for solitude by traveling across the desert from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean. Running time is 112 minutes. Rated PG 13. Private lessons are available for all levels of aerial fabric and / or lyra for ages six and up. Private lessons are catered to the students’ specific levels and students will have more time on the equipment than in the larger group classes with set curriculums. A great option for a fun and unique birthday party! $50 / hour for one person. $20 / hour for each additional person. Prices can be pro-rated from 45 minutes up to two hours. Climbing, pulling, flipping upside-down, and holding yourself in challenging positions in the air, build amazing overall body strength in this class. Work with lyra and aerial fabric as well as floor exercises and stretching. Aerial Conditioning focuses on balancing, strength, and flexibility. It’s a great way to build up strength and confidence for instructed aerial dance class sessions!

Fridays Open Aerial Dance Supervised aerial practice sessions with no instruction! Practice and perfect the skills you’ve learned in class sessions with access to lyra and silks. This is a time to work on what you already know, not learn new things. Participants must have been enrolled in a full session of CB Dance Collective’s Aerial Dance classes during the last 12 months or received prior approval from CBDC. Open to ages 15 – adult.

What do the Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Jive and Collegiate Shag have in common?

They’re all forms of Swing dance, characterized by swinging, flipping and throwing of dancers. Swing is energetic and fast-paced, allowing for lots of personal style and expression after learning the basic steps and patterns.

Tonight’s class will break it all down, introducing Swing from the west coast to the east coast and many points in between. No partner necessary. 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. $10 / person.

MON DEC 22 – FRI JAN 2 Kids & Youth Aerial Dance Bring some spice and sparkle to your child’s winter vacation through these holiday aerial dance classes designed especially for kids and youth. In Intro classes students learn the foundations of twirling, flying, climbing and doing tricks on the aerial lyra and silks through age appropriate body movements, all with a focus on safety and injury prevention. Level 2 classes review movements learned in the Intro class and advance skills on the lyra and fabric while focusing on proper aerial technique. For Level 2 classes, students must have taken an entire CBDC Kids or Youth Intro to Aerial Dance class session in the last 12 months or receive prior approval. All aerial dance makes exercising fun while simultaneously improving balance, core strength, motor skills, and hand-eye coordination. Lesson plans provide room for creativity and imagination helping to promote self esteem. Kids classes open to ages six – nine. Youth classes open to ages 10 – 14. All classes meet Mondays and Fridays for two weeks.

African Dance

These high-energy dance classes to live drumming explore a variety of traditional African movements and rhythms. Learn the history of dances used to celebrate the great markers of life such as births, deaths, weddings, plantings, harvests, hunting and fishing. This beautiful and soulful cultural art form is passed down from modern African dance legends such as Guinea teachers Fara Tolno, Youssouf Koumbassa, Moustapha Bangoura, and Zimbabwe dancer Rujeko Dumbutshena.

Spice up your night with these sultry dances of desire and attraction from the steamy southern climes. Salsa’s roots dip into Cuba and Puerto Rico, having since spread throughout Latin America from Venezuela and Columbia to the Dominican Republic. Tango originates in Argentina in the barrios of Buenos Aires.

Earthy, dramatic and sensual, it calls upon an element of romance in its synchronized movements. It may be cold outside, but it’ll be warm in this dance class! No partner necessary. 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. $10 / person.

SHARED ARTIST’S SPACE: The Art Studio has a full ceramics studio with wheels, kilns, wedging tables, tools, and work storage space. Ceramicists are invited to become a member of the studio, or as we call it, The Shared Artist’s Space (SAS).

SAS Membership includes: access to studio space seven days a week by key code entry; personal storage for art supplies, tools, clay, and works in progress; access to potter’s wheels, slab roller, wedging table, and basic ceramics tools and supplies; use of our kiln; access to a community of artists, and the potential to show and sell your work at ASCA (must apply and be accepted). Although SAS is great for potters, artists working in any medium are welcome. Membership is $65 per month.

Paint Your Own Pottery Holiday Paint Your Own Pottery We have strategically scheduled painting days before major holidays like Christmas, Valentine’s Day or Passover so you can be sure to have plenty of time to paint gifts and ship them off, paint to have decorations ready, or paint purely for the fun of it! We fire the kiln on the Monday directly after each set of painting days, with pieces ready for pick up two days later on Wednesday from 4 – 6 p.m. Drop in anytime during the hours listed next to each date. No need to sign up or call in advance. Pieces range in price from $5 – $55. Pay only for what you paint.

Paint By Appointment We continue to offer our space for Painting Appointments. This works well if you cannot paint on our scheduled dates, if you would like to host a painting party, or if you want to ensure the space is available for your group only. Pieces from a Painting Appointment will be fired with our next scheduled kiln firing. If you’d like to have your pieces fired and ready before that time, you may choose to fire the kiln directly after your session for an additional $55 fee. Please note that it takes two full days for the kiln to be fired, cooled, and unloaded. A Painting Appointment costs $50 per group for a two hour session, plus the cost of what you choose to paint.

reCreations Live Painting The perfect après ski! Grab a friend and head to the Sweet Spot in Mount Crested Butte to recreate a classical, well-known painting. Begin with information on the artist, the piece, how it was created, and where it hangs. Ladies Create Nights

Winter Photography Workshop Adventures Join local professional photographer, Raynor Czerwinski, on one of two separate cross country ski tours out to the historic town of Photo by Raynor Czerwinski Gothic and stay the night in the luxurious Maroon Hut. Spend the evening photographing the sunset over the historic buildings and the dramatic mountain scenery. After dinner, return outside to a nighttime winter wonderland to photograph the night sky. The Maroon Hut has raised the bar for backcountry living with a ground source heat pump for heating and hot water, electricity, a full kitchen with running water, and four bedrooms.

Raynor is an experienced chef and will be cooking you dinner for the evening. Last winter workshop participants enjoyed Rack of Lamb with a Cabernet Demi-Glace, Roasted Asparagus, and Truffled Fingerling Potatoes. The ski is four miles one way on moderate terrain to the Gothic town site, or roughly two hours depending on conditions. The Maroon Hut has many amenities, so this is one of the “lighter” ski tours one can go on in the area.

All workshops have a maximum of six people. Beginner to advanced. Instructor: Raynor Czerwinski. Cost includes one-on-one photographic instruction, gourmet meals cooked by Raynor and lodging in the Maroon Hut. $325.

FRI MAR 13 – SUN MAR 15 Beyond the Wheel: Creative Ceramic Hand Building & Mold Making University of New Mexico at Taos Department Head, Matthew Adams, is joining The Art Studio in Crested Butte as a guest instructor for this exciting three-day workshop. Intermediate and advanced clay students are invited to join Matthew as he shares his expertise in hand building and mold making. Class focuses on creating unique organic and geometric forms that can be functional and decorative. Work on developing your own individual and personal aesthetic as you explore various forms, patterns and textures.

Additionally investigate colored clay inlay, scraffito, stencils, and stamps. Instructor: Matthew Adams. Class meets Friday 5:30 – 7:30; Saturday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.; and Sunday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. $150 + $25 supply fee.

SAT APR 25 Abstract Series in Acrylic Learn about and experiment with abstraction and non-representational imagery. Use drawing mediums to playfully explore shape, form, color and composition. View and study work of famous abstract artists for inspiration. Finally, using acrylic paints and mediums, complete a fun and surprising abstract series on three 6x6 cradled canvas panels that “go” together and are ready to hang. Included in the supply fee are paint, materials and mediums for texture, canvas panels, brushes, and painting mediums.

Learn how to use that sewing machine! Learn all you need to know to enter into the DIY world of wonder with fabric, including threading the machine, mechanical procedures, proper tension, and basic stitches. Each participant will pick a project: a simple pillow cover, a tote bag, a skirt, or you can bring an easy pattern that you’ve always wanted to tackle. The supply fee will cover your pattern, tailor’s chalk, seam ripper, and practice fabric. Students need to bring a sewing machine (with the instruction manual and bobbins that fit that particular machine), tan or white thread, 2.5 yards of fabric, and scissors to get started. Every person projects a unique set of symbols, shapes and colors that reflect their personality and energy. Are you cornflower blue, introverted, and compassionate? Or fiery orange, outgoing, and pragmatic?

Come engage in a small group endeavor to discover, interpret, and draw these characteristics for each other, using high quality colored pencils on colored paper. Then gather the drawings done for you and attach them into unique book forms. A minimum of six participants are needed for the class, so bring a friend! No artistic experience is necessary — just the desire to explore art and intuition! Instructor: Carol Connor. 5:15 – 7:45 p.m. $30 includes all art supplies.

WED JUN 17 – JUL 29 Plein Air Watercolor Workshop Series When flowers begin to pop and summer is in the air, come learn from an expert on how to paint outdoors! Learn new techniques as you capture Crested Butte scenery during the most beautiful time of year. Small watercolor sketches are the focus and you may chose to capture either a realistic snapshot or an impression of your chosen subject.

SAVE THE DATE! Community Iron Pour 2015 The Art Studio and Vinotok are pairing up to host the First Annual Community Collaborative Iron Pour in Crested Butte in 2015! An Iron Pour is the creation of sculpture through the pouring of molten iron into molds. The pour will take place on the evening of September 15, 2015 during the week-long Vinotok celebration. For the week leading up to the pour, The Art Studio will provide both artists and community members (including kids!) the opportunity to work on pieces to cast at the pour. MON DEC 8 – SAT JAN 31 Laura Elm: “Truth or Dare” “Truth is rarely pure and never simple.” — Oscar Wilde. The Truth or Dare series is a gathering of mottos, sayings and aphorisms that Laura Elm has spontaneously placed on pottery over the years and integrated into many facets of her work. The show brings together an array of artwork including drawings, paintings and pottery. The premise is to dare viewers to see the obvious and the subliminal with an assortment of seemingly unconnected images.

Unusual juxtapositions are designed to create a mysterious response defined by the viewer’s own interpretation. Pattern and repetition allow the viewer to contemplate the meditative qualities of color and form which evolve over time. At the Art Studio Gallery. WED APR 1 Stepping Stones Children’s Center: “Spring Art Show” Come see the entire Center transformed by the children of Stepping Stones.

Stretching beyond the perimeters of the Piper Gallery, young artists from four months to six years display a compilation of their artwork created during the school year.

Children artists will be available to answer questions about and elaborate on their artwork on display. Then, revel in performances by budding actors from three to five years. Songs, dances, and even such productions as the “Three Piggie Opera” have lit the Center Stage with sets built by the children. All parents and community members are invited. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception & Performance: Wednesday, April 1, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

MON MAY 18 – MON JUN 1 “Yarn Forward” This group art show features contemporary fiber and textiles from whimsical to wonderful. Arising from a knitting group that has met weekly for two years, new knitters and accomplished artists celebrate their love of textiles of all kinds. This compilation of works displays the fruits of these weekly meetings where artists convened to share ideas, perfect their craft, learn new techniques and support each other’s endeavors. Artists: Louise Downey, Laura Elm, Lauren Lange, Tami Moffett, Emily Pannier, and Davina Weitman. At the Piper Gallery.

NEW ARTS CENTER

ARTS ARE CENTRAL TO THE CRESTED BUTTE IDENTITY and sense of community, with the Center for the Arts Crested Butte serving as a convener of the community’s arts and education organizations.

The Center is already known for its list of world-class performers such as Arlo Guthrie, Junior Brown, Los Lobos, Robert Earl Keen, and Lisa Marie Presley. Although these amazing artists can be seen in New York, San Francisco, or Dallas, nothing compares to the intimate setting of the Center for the Arts. The audience can see every pick of the guitar, every toe point in the ballet shoe, every gasp for air.

An event at the Center often feels like a private performance.

Over the years we’ve added programs, performances and learning opportunities in visual arts, music, dance, children’s programming, culinary arts and film. The Center has been a leader in the Arts Alliance of the East River Valley, helping to garner local, regional and national awards and recognition for our valley’s strong arts offerings. We’ve fostered valuable partnerships with a wide variety of community arts organizations such as Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational, Artists of the West Elks, The Trailhead Children’s Museum, and the Crested Butte Community School Enrichment Program. The Crested Butte Dance Collective, Crested Butte School of Dance, Crested Butte Film Festival, and Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival all utilize The Center’s facility.

As a result, the Center for the Arts has truly become the center of the community, and is now bursting at the seams with over 350 annual offerings. We therefore seek to build a new home that would reflect The Center’s importance to the community and create a literal town center. This will, finally, be a space commensurate to the impact; a space that can and will accommodate the increased vibrant arts that are already a part of The Center.

To fund the Center for the Arts’ new facility and support the growth of its programs, the Board of Directors has launched a $15 million campaign with the theme Creative Impact. The campaign will provide $12 million to design, construct, furnish, and equip the new state-of-the-art facility that will meet the Center’s needs for the years to come. It will also provide $3 million to support ongoing operations of the facility, an important element that will ensure that the new space can be maintained and operated as beautifully in 2025 as it is the day it opens its doors.

We are reaching out to local and national philanthropic foundations, the Crested Butte business community, and especially generous individuals and families to complete our campaign successfully. We welcome support from those who live in our community year round, those who call our town home for one or two seasons during the year, and those who visit us only occasionally. We welcome gifts both large and small, and hope that our community will invest in our future as it has helped us build our history.

KEY FEATURES OF OUR NEW FACILITY INCLUDE: • 300 seat, ADA compliant theater including a balcony • State-of-the-art lighting, sound and visual equipment • A music rehearsal room for use by the Crested Butte Community School for instruction and lessons • A catering kitchen for large events, receptions and culinary demonstrations • 4,000 square feet for the Trailhead Children’s Museum with outdoor music garden • Three dedicated dance studios for the Crested Butte School of Dance and the Crested Butte Dance Collective

• Energy efficient HVAC and LEED certified • Several multipurpose community spaces • Three times the space for Visual Arts programs and a Clay Studio • The current Center for the Arts building, at 6,000 square feet, will be torn down and a new 38,000 square foot building will be erected in the same location adjacent to Town Park • Enlarged Piper Gallery on the ground floor with improved natural light and outdoor patio access • Auditorium floor with removable chairs for greater freestyle dancing capabilities at concerts

AS THE CENTER CONTINUES TO GROW PROGRAMS in order to meet the needs of our diverse community and prepare for a facility expansion, we appreciate support at a variety of different levels.

Operating The Center as an affordable community facility means that we must rely on contributions and fundraising for about two-thirds of our budget. We offer special fundraising groups to support The Center’s mission of offering engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community, as well as a variety of volunteer opportunities.

For the Center’s 15th anniversary season in 2003, the first group of Center Circle members made a commitment to make the first Winter Season happen. The membership in this group remains strong, providing the funds that enable us to plan early for the next Winter Season and to expand our programming. Center Circle members make a financial commitment to bring extraordinary artists to Crested Butte year round.

Founders’ Club The Founders’ Club plays a key leadership role in providing The Center for the Arts with a solid foundation for growing and sustaining high quality and progressive programs. They ensure the continuation of The Center’s original vision — to be responsive to the needs of the community. By making a financial contribution, the Founders’ Club supports programs in the following areas: visual arts, adult education, children and youth programs, the Piper Gallery, and world events and cultural diversity.

Join Our Board of Directors The Board of Directors plays a critical role in the success of the Center for the Arts. Their primary responsibility is to fulfill and promote the mission of The Center through leadership and sharing of expertise. This group of dedicated individuals sets policy, ensures resources, fundraises, and attends regular board and committee meetings.

Focusing on the goals of: Strategic Resource Development; Remarkable Human Resources; Extraordinary Mission Delivery and Creating a Bestin-Class Facility, each board member serves as an ambassador in the community — instilling their passion for the arts by encouraging the community to get involved!

Support for Fundraising Events Our vital volunteers help fundraise over a third of The Center’s budget through Tour de Forks and the Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival as well as a variety of other auctions, feasts, and private music events.

Volunteers help execute signature Center fundraisers, host events in their homes, and provide other meaningful support. As a volunteer you experience wonderful opportunities to get to know new people, learn more about The Center, and truly help in a meaningful way towards a worthy cause.

Volunteer There are many ways to help The Center such as setting up for events, taking tickets, door security, welcoming visitors, delivering brochures, putting up posters, helping with social media, cataloging photographs, and much more. If you would like to become a part of the vibrancy of The Center, consider volunteering your time. Ticket and workshop trades may be available in some instances.
