WELCOME TO THE CENTER

This is your comprehensive guide to all of the programs the Center for the Arts in Crested Butte will be offering during the 2012–2013 Winter Season. Use this as your go-to guide to tap into the myriad of ways to expand and enrich your own life with art, entertainment and creativity. In all of this, a diversity of classes, workshops, time commitments, ability levels and pricing assure everyone, from locals to visitors to part-time residents, can find a home in the arts.

Everyone is welcome at the Center — whether its filling your evening with an after-dinner concert, spicing up your vacation with a Tango workshop, or learning how to capture the magic of a snowy landscape through photography lessons. Engage your dancing spirit. Discover your inner artist. Be entertained, inspired and enriched. Because when you walk through the Center‘s doors, you bring the arts to your life.

In 2012 alone the Center welcomed over 30,000 people through its doors through 58 Center presentations, 56 rental events (21 of which were for non-profits), 73 rental rehearsals and five school events. There were 20 Piper Gallery Receptions for local and regional artists. The Crested Butte Dance Collective held 23 classes on the Center Stage serving over 430 dancers.

Their sell-out shows of Move the Butte enthralled 842 dance lovers. The Art Studio conducted 34 classes to 216 participants and had over 600 art aficionados enjoy ArtTalks, ArtWalks, gallery openings and showings, Bridge Tours and public Art Installations through its creations. As each day passes, we are adding more classes, more workshops, more opportunities for the visual arts, more invigorating performances in the arts. Through all of this it is our vision, our mission and our values that guide our every move.

Through 12/23 Holiday Wreath Tour The 2012 Holiday Wreath Tour showcases the incredible talents of local artists, strives to drive traffic to small businesses in the region, and raises financial support for the Center for the Arts in Crested Butte to continue its general operations. Local artists and organizations have decorated 20 wreaths as a holiday fundraiser for the Center for the Arts. These wreaths will be on exhibit at businesses throughout town from November 30 through December 23. We invite you to visit local businesses to see these amazing works of art. You are welcome to purchase the wreaths on site or through the Center‘s website.

12/28 Hot, Hot & Hotter It may be cold outside but this event will be sizzling with an aprés ski fashion flamboyance touting “hot drinks, hot appetizers and even hotter models.” The hardbodies of Crested Butte — from Ski Patrol to Extreme Skiers to Olympic Athletes will be strutting the latest in on-the-hill ski clothes, aprés ski attire and just right outfits for a night out on the town or an upcoming New Year‘s Eve bash. Snappy appetizers and special discounts on featured clothing are just some of the enticements. Plus, a special Mystery Woman will flaunt sumptuous swimwear for the hot tub while selling raffle tickets for enviable items from high end demos to the latest in snowboards and skis.

Treat yourself or treat your honey — this is one fashion show for both women AND men. Hosted by pARTners, and through the Tour de Forks fundraising series, this fundraiser will help the Center for the Arts continue to bring arts to everyone in the East River Valley. 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. $60.

1/2 pARTners Social Hour Come learn how you can put the FUN in Fundraising! pARTners, the fundraising team for the Center for the Arts, welcomes friends old and new to a spectacular cocktail hour to ring in the new year. 2/3 Super Bowl Party Everyone‘s got to have a fun party to go to for the Super Bowl. Why not make yours one of the lavish private homes in Crested Butte you might never otherwise have a chance to see? Munch your way through every touchdown and foul play with high-end, specially catered Super Bowl fare by a local chef. There will be multiple large screens from which to catch every second of the action. Plus, for those wishing to tempt lady luck, there will be plenty of games and pools to wager your bets. A silent auction can keep you company if the field antics don‘t and there will be a “spirits” tasting at half time to make the show even better. Hosted by pARTners, this good-time fundraiser will help the Center for the Arts continue its spectacular programming, classes and artistic opportunities for the community. 3:00 p.m. $60.

3/3 A Private Evening with Alpin Hong Unconventional classical pianist Alpin Hong executes his repertoire from Bach, to Rachmaninoff, to Gershwin, like a rock star. Formally trained as a Master at the Julliard School of Music, his inspired renditions of the classics explain his standing room only performance at Carnegie Hall, his first prize in the 2001 Artists Guild International Competition. His sold-out, standing ovation shows have reviewers calling him the modern day Pied Piper, wooing fans with his stunning technique, emotional range and rare humor. Enjoy this private concert in the home of Joy and Paul Adams in the restored and renovated historic Catholic Church. Libations and appetizers will be served at this special fundraiser for the Center for the Arts. 6:00 p.m. $125.

1/26 “Green Scene” with the Play-Ground Theatre Come enjoy a live theatre production as part of the “ART”rageous Day of the Arts. Introducing the world‘s first organic superhero, Super Natural. Born on Earth Day… raised on peace, love and granola… Super Natural is here to save the planet from the evil plans of “Toxic Waste.” See also “Trash to Treasure,” a hilarious pirate adventure. Bearfoot Bluegrass, 2/2

2/2 Bearfoot Bluegrass Originally heralding from Alaska, Bearfoot Bluegrass first arrived on the bluegrass scene by scorching the Telluride Bluegrass festival stage in 2001 by winning the Best Up and Coming Bluegrass Band. Their 2009 album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts. Now energetically re-configured and with a new album out, Bearfoot touts original members Angela Oudean and Jason Norris joined by new members Todd Grebe, Nora Jane Struthers and P.J. George. The end result is arrangements that weave together a multiplicity of musical styles from easy, good-time lopes to hardcore bluegrass woven with true stories, tall tales and a fresh rockin‘ element. 8:00 p.m. $25.

2/9 Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Performance & Residency Cleo brings cultural immersion to the world of dance through an explosive body of works inspired by the African American experience and rooted in black dance traditions. They transcend the boundaries of culture, class and age while unequivocally communicating the complexity of the human condition.

Deemed a National Cultural Treasure, the troupe has toured as Cultural Ambassadors to over 20 countries and performed in legendary venues such as New York City‘s Lincoln Center and Jacob‘s Pillow. The Center will also be sponsoring two private Crested Butte Community School shows during Cleo‘s Residency as part of its community outreach. 2/15 & 16 The Vagina Monologues Based on author Eve Ensler‘s proving interviews conducted with women from all around the world. The Vagina Monologues it is a gathering of honest, funny and often outrageous stories that give voice to topics rarely discussed with a frank, sober tone in public discourse.

Each year brings attention to a particular cause affecting girls and women worldwide. The box-office draw is in part utilized towards promoting national and international awareness of women‘s issues, as well as, donated to a local charity which advances the welfare of women in the community.

This year‘s proceeds will benefit The Center for Restorative Practices located in Gunnison, Colorado. Local residents Jennifer Greene, Roxana Alvarez and Tracy Brooks are producing this year‘s performance of The Vagina Monologues, hosted by the Center for the Arts.

2/23 Tim O’Brien In Tim O’Brien’s music, things come together. The uncanny intersection of traditional and contemporary elements in his songwriting, his tireless dedication to a vast and still-expanding array of instruments, and his ongoing commitment to place himself in as many unique and challenging musical scenarios as possible has made him a key figure in today’s thriving roots music scene — and well beyond it. O’Brien’s presence — be it as a bandleader, songwriter, mentor, instrumentalist, or vocalist — has been strongly felt not only in his own rich music, but in the many recordings of his songs by such artists as the Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Dierks Bentley, Nickel Creek, Kathy Mattea, the New Grass Revival, and the Seldom Scene, and in his recorded collaborations with Steve Martin, the Chieftains, and innumerable others. Most recently, O’Brien has been performing before capacity crowds in the band of Mark Knopfler, who described O’Brien as “a master of American folk music, Irish music, Scottish music — it doesn't matter; a fine songwriter and one of my favorite singers.”

WINTER SEASON LINEUP 3/1 & 3/2 Move the Butte Crested Butte Dance Collective‘s sell-out smash hit Move the Butte is a community dance and performance arts show that celebrates and showcases the creativity and connection we share through dance. Adult local dancers, artists and choreographers converge on stage in a stunning variety of dance modalities. Past shows have featured Modern, Tango, Aerial, Stilt Walking, Spoken Word, Tap, Hip Hop, Burlesque, African, Hoopdance, Butoh and Jazz. 3/4–3/6 Artist in Residence — Alpin Hong Playing piano was Alpin Hong‘s refuge as a youth, giving him confidence in his awkward teenage years. Now, Hong translates the magic of pursuing something you love in his concerts and children‘s workshops and residences. A skateboarder, snowboarder, video gamer, martial artist and Julliard School of Music graduate, Hong brings a youthful approach to making classical music relevant to audiences of all ages. Hong will be conducting two band class outreaches and two school performances at the Crested Butte Community School as part of the Center‘s community service programming. These are private events for Crested Butte Community School students only. Free.

3/6 Rock & Roll vs. Classical Showdown with Alpin Hong & Crushed Out It‘s a classical music versus rock-n-roll showdown. Classical pianist Alpin Hong plays technical sonatas like 300 year old rock and roll hits. He grabs a single note and thrusts it into hyperdrive. He is fluid.

3/15 Vagabond Opera A bohemian cabaret with European roots, this liberated and reinvented neo-classical opera features Paris hot jazz, Balkan belly dance, old world Yiddish theatre, Ukrainian folk-punk, gut bucket swing, tango, ballads, klezmer and vigorous originals. The sixpiece crew sings with lusty opera voices in 13 languages with rich musical phrasing, sparkling lyrics and indomitable stage presence all played with exuberance, skill and a gritty vagabond edge. Impeccable musicianship of accordion, piano, upright bass, beat box, sax, cello and percussions from drums to marimba meets gypsy theatrics with a naughty and erotic edge.

3/23 The Velveteen Rabbit The timeless tale of love and sacrifice as revealed through the story of a small stuffed rabbit given as a gift to a little boy. Though the most modest toy in the nursery, the Velveteen Rabbit earns the love of a young boy and learns about the joys and pain of becoming “Real.” Margery Williams‘ classic book springs to magical life in this enchanting musical about love, loss and self-esteem, with music by the composer of the smash Off-Broadway revue I Love You, You‘re Perfect, Now Change. A classic children‘s story that the entire family can enjoy. This special production of The Velveteen Rabbit is presented by PHAMALy, the Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League, an award-wining professional theatre troupe bringing opportunities and artistic development to performers with disabilities.

PHAMALy has been nominated for eight Colorado Theatre Guild Awards including Best Director, Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Outstanding Production of a Musical. 4:00 p.m. $15 adults, $10 kids.

Donavon Frankenreiter, 3/21

3/21 Donavon Frankenreiter Wildly creative pro-surfer and guitarist Donavon Frankenreiter‘s music hums with beach oriented vibes that will have you dancing in the aisles and glowing with the sunshine of spring. His 2012 album, Start Livin,‘ drips with his honey thick vocals and master guitar work, bearing all the intimacy of an impromptu back-porch performance and the tenderness of a treasured love letter. This is music of the moment, of being yourself, of living life, and throwing away worries. There is little room for stress in Donavon‘s music. It just feels good. Donavon will be coming to this show with his full band. Opening for Donavon is singer-songwriter, Rayland Baxter.

3/29 Ruth Moody Band Ruth Moody is one of the silky, seductive voices of the Wailin‘ Jennys, the internationally renowned, Billboard-charting trio that has sold out venues across the globe and produced numerous critically acclaimed albums. An artist of exceptional depth and grace in her own right, Ruth is a multi-instrumentalist and master songwriter. Her compositions are timeless, universal and exceptionally wellcrafted, sung with intimacy and honesty. Her solo album, The Garden, was nominated for a Juno Award, Western Canadian Music Award and three Canadian Folk Music awards. 2/19 The Standbys Every night on Broadway, dozens of the best performers aren’t on stage. They are backstage, standing by, ready to go on at a moment’s notice. The unique and challenging lives of Broadway’s Understudies and Standbys are revealed in this evocative and original behind-the-scenes documentary. The Standbys follows a variety of undiscovered performers for several years through their ups and downs, struggles and triumphs, onstage performances and private lives. When these Standbys are finally given the chance of a lifetime, anything can — and does — happen. The film will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers or the actors. 7:30 p.m. $7.

WINTER SEASON FILM SERIES

1/22 Wild Horse, Wild Ride Each year thousands of wild horses are rounded up and removed from public lands by the U.S. Government. All will need permanent homes. None has ever been touched by a human hand. Wild Horse, Wild Ride tells the story of the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge, an annual contest that dares 100 people to each tame a totally wild mustang in order to get it adopted into a better life beyond federal corrals. Stunning and poignant, this film chronicles a handful of unforgettable characters from their first uneasy meeting with their horses and over three months as they attempt to transform from scared strangers to the closest of companions.

Eventually all will converge in Fort Worth, Texas, to compete against each other and offer the horses up for adoption at an auction in which the trainers, if they wish to keep their horses, must bid against the public. 7:30 p.m. $7.

3/19 Bones Brigade The legendary Bones Brigade was a talented gang of teenage outcasts who completely dedicated their lives to a disrespected art form: skateboarding. For most of the 1980s, this misfit crew — headed by 1970s ex-skateboard champion Stacy Peralta, the film’s director — blasted the industry with a mixture of art and raw talent, becoming the most popular skateboarding team in history. The core unit of the Bones Brigade — Peralta, George Powell, Craig Stecyk III, and groundbreaking skateboarders Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero and Mike McGill — built an empire that covered the world. They dominated contests, made hundreds of thousands of dollars, created the modern skateboard video, and set the stage for a totally new form of skating called street style. 7:30 p.m. $7.

1/8–1/16 Crested Butte Community School “Winter Art Show” The annual art show features the outstanding work of secondary students in a variety of mediums under the direction of high school art teacher and local artist Ben McLoughlin. The mission of the Crested Butte Community School is to provide an education of exceptional quality by creating a safe environment of mutual respect, educational alternatives, high expectations and genuine achievement that empowers all students to realize their potential and become responsible citizens. Reception: Thursday, January 10, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Free.

1/18–1/31 Dawn Cohen “Scenes from Beautiful Crested Butte” Dawn Cohen believes in the power of observation in art and has devoted her time as an artist to only making paintings on site in plein-air. Dawn was introduced to the concept of plein-air painting by her husband, Shaun Horne. Dawn states “When painting outside I am receiving information from all the senses, not just the eyes. It allows for me to feel and experience the landscape, and to perceive the heaviness or lightness of the atmosphere. When you look at my plein-air landscape, I am hoping to share my experience of time and place.” This gallery show will showcase many of her spectacular plein-air paintings of Crested Butte representing all four seasons and will demonstrate why she believes “the beauty of nature is an inexhaustible subject matter.” Reception: Wednesday, January 23, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Free.

2/4–2/28 “Contemporary Clay” The best contemporary clay artists in the Gunnison Valley unite to bring you this exciting exhibition of their work. 3/1–3/15 Carlie Kenton “Wild Wonder” The “Wild Wonder” exhibit is a collection of brightly colored acrylic paintings designed to speak to the viewer‘s inner child. Using a combination of whimsical storytelling and imagination, these paintings open a window into a world of color and light where it is ok to laugh and wish, dream, imagine and believe. Every child deserves a world of wild wonders, especially the child within. Carlie Kenton is a Colorado native and has lived in Gunnison for the past eight years. She has studied photography and art extensively and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from Western State Colorado University. Carlie‘s work ranges from traditional black and white photography, to colored pencil drawings, to acrylic paintings and many other ventures. Reception: Tuesday, March 5, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Free.

3/16–3/23 Kelly Frimel “Wearable Art” Kelly Frimel has been designing and creating jewelry for over ten years. She is known for her beaded beads, which are created using a needle and thread, picking up one bead at a time to cover forms in wood and vintage Lucite. Favorite materials of the artist include sterling silver, found objects, and vintage rhinestones. Kelly‘s collection can be seen in boutiques and galleries across the country. This gallery show will introduce two new collections: petrified wood pendants, created with self collected Gunnison Valley petrified wood; and junk jewelry, finely crafted wearable art made with found objects. Beaded bead necklaces and earrings, wire crocheted bracelets and wire wrapped rings will also be shown by the artist. Reception: Monday, March 18, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Free.

2/6, 2/7 & 2/8 Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Master Classes — Offered by the Center for the Arts This is a dance troupe that does more than just entertain. They elevate. Educate.

Excite. The troupe declares a mission of international, cross-cultural dance arts and education rooted in African American traditions. Its mastermind is listed as a Living Legend for her work in transcribing the social issues of race, prejudice and oppression into a message of healing. Three Master Classes will be conducted by the troupe.

Paint Your Own Pottery Yes, you can still paint pottery this winter! The Art Studio, located in downtown Crested Butte, is home to our art classes, workshops, Shared Artist‘s Space AND our Pottery Painting Shop. We are open for painting pottery this winter season during our special Pottery Painting Events, scheduled before major holidays like Christmas, Valentine‘s Day, Mother‘s Day, and Father‘s Day. In addition, you can paint with us at any other time by scheduling an appointment with our staff.

Private Art Lessons In addition to our regularly scheduled programming at The Art Studio, we also offer both private art lessons for children and adults in a variety of mediums. Based on your interests, we will help match you with an experienced instructor. You can view our instructors, their bios, photos of their work, and links to their websites on the Center‘s website.

A few options for lessons (not a complete list) are to learn to throw on the wheel; get instruction in watercolor, oil, or acrylic painting; learn how to make jewelry; go out in the field with a pro photographer; or learn how to draw! Lessons are scheduled with instructors who are also local Crested Butte artists and who are some of the best in their field.

Art Events & Parties The Art Studio‘s space on Elk Avenue is the ideal place for a fun, intimate, and creative party or event. Throw a birthday party for adults or children, host a ladies night, schedule a bridal or baby shower, and get creative! Paint pottery, take a group drawing lesson, learn to work with precious metal clay, or have a crafting night.

Shared Artist‘s Space If you‘re looking for an affordable place to work on your art and a community of artists to work with, then become a Member of the Shared Artist‘s Space (SAS) at the Art Studio. Your SAS Membership Includes: access to studio space seven days a week by key code entry; personal storage for art supplies, tools, clay, and works in progress; access to potter‘s wheels, slab roller, wedging table, and basic ceramics tools and supplies; kiln firings; access to a community of artists; and the potential to show and sell your work at ASCA (must apply and be accepted). Although SAS is great for potters, artists working in any medium are welcome.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE Through 12/17 Knitting: Hats + Wristlets + Scarves Mondays over four weeks, learn about the touchy-feely tactile sensations of hand knitting. Increase your knowledge of various needle techniques, quick tricks, and reading patterns while creating unique hats, wristlets, and scarves. For beginner and intermediate students. 12/4 Canvas & Cabernet Join local artist, Becky Chappell, for a fun-filled guided painting session. With her step-bystep instructions, Becky proves that anyone can create a beautiful painting. No painting or drawing experience is required, as the workshop is fully guided, and Becky leads the entire class together, with demonstrations on how to mix your paint and how to apply it to the canvas. If you have always wanted to paint, but don‘t know where to begin, this is the workshop for you! 12/8 Storybook Characters in Polymer Clay During one intensive fun-filled day, learn basic doll-making skills by finishing a standing folk art character. Using polymer clay and hand building techniques, create your piece while modeling the “Easy Bake Oven” way. Students will learn tips for prepping, forming, and hardening polymer, while concentrating on forming detailed faces for storybook figures like Gnomes, Trolls, Elves and Fairies. 4/20 Ouchie Ointment Discover three native medicinal plants, Oregon Grape, Usnea lichen, and Cottonwood. These three powerful plants will be our main ingredients to the salve we will make. This class will teach you how to make your own antibacterial and pain relieving salve as a replacement for commercial ointments. Class includes a 1-ounce tin of ointment.

5/25 Dandy Day with Dandelions We will discuss the nutritive properties of one our most beloved weeds, Taraxacum Officinale. During this class you will learn how to make Dandelion oil which is good for sore / achy muscles, swollen / congested glands, and other skin ailments. Class includes a 1-ounce bottle of Dandelion oil.

12/28 & 5/11 Precious Metal Clay Jewelry Crafting Workshop This is like no other jewelry workshop! Precious metal clay, PMC, is a crafting medium, with the consistency of polymer clay that is comprised of very small particles of metal (in this case silver). The “clay” is used to form beautiful pendants, rings, and earrings for jewelry pieces. No experience is necessary, and students familiar with PMC and those who are new to the medium are both encouraged to join this workshop. Private lessons also available.

1/11–1/12, 2/25–2/26, 3/11–3/12 Moon & Milky Way Photographic Workshops Join local professional photographer, Raynor Czerwinski, on a cross country ski tour out to the historic town of Gothic and stay the night in the luxurious Maroon Hut. Spend the evening photographing the sunset over the historic buildings and dramatic mountainous scenery. After the sun has gone down, return outside to a nighttime winter wonderland and phenomenal photographic opportunities. The ski is four miles (one way) on moderate terrain to the Gothic town site, or roughly 1.5 – 2 hours depending on conditions. We will discuss meals and snacks a few days prior to the class, and a communal dinner and breakfast will be arranged. The Maroon Hut has many amenities, so a sleeping bag, change of warm clothes, food, and camera gear are all that are required. 12:00 p.m. – 12:00 p.m. the following day. $225.

2/1–3/15 Basic Press Molds Series Learn the exciting possibilities of making multiples in clay during this 6-week class.

Hand build a bas relief model in clay, learn to mix plaster, and then cast your piece to create a mold that can be reused to make a series of similar pieces. A great skill to have to create limited edition series and sets without starting from scratch each time. Private lessons also available. 2/9–2/10 Inspired Mix Media Explore the possibilities of mixed media in this fun and playful class! Participants create inspired imagery that illuminates their goals, dreams and inner workings. This course is a sampling of methods used for “Ripple” a women’s restorative art retreat based out of Crested Butte.

3/19 Chakra Painting Join local artist, Becky Chappell for a guided painting session for the senses. Begin with music, guided meditation, and movement focusing on the seven chakras. Participants will then check in with their bodies, and connect with what‘s happening in each chakra from the root to the crown. Using pan pastels and supporting tools, Becky will guide you in drawing exercises to represent what you see. A fantastically relaxing class where art and creativity meet meditation, yoga, and reiki. 4/28–5/26 Teen Graffiti This class for middle and high school students will focus on the ever-changing and sometimes controversial world of grafitti and street art. In addition to studying the history of street art and wellknown grafitti artists, like Banksy, students will work with design concepts, drawing, stenciling, spray painting, and speed painting to make their own artistic statements. Class will conclude with tagging an actual wall in town, with permission of course. All work will be either done in the classroom or approved before it is carried out, and no vandalism will take place during this class. Volunteer There are many ways to help the Center such as setting up for events, taking tickets, door security, welcoming visitors, delivering brochures, putting up posters, helping with social media, cataloging photographs and much more. If you would like to become a part of the vibrancy of the Center, consider volunteering your time. Ticket and workshop trades may be available in some instances.
