Celebrating 25 Years of Bringing the Arts to Life!

2012 MARKS 25 YEARS OF THE CENTER “bringing the arts to life” in Crested Butte! Such an occasion affords a propitious time to honor the people and progress of the past quarter century as well as share our thoughtful plans for the next 25 years!

Most importantly, on behalf of the Board and Staff, I want to express our sincere gratitude for the many generous contributions and critical investments in the arts and culture in Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley from the Center’s friends and donors during these many years.

While not in Crested Butte in 1987, I am told that since its beginnings from a county garage, remarkably transformed into an arts facility, and now designated by the Town of Crested Butte as a “community arts center,” the Center for the Arts has served as a welcoming “home for arts and culture” for residents and visitors in the Gunnison Valley.

Throughout this 25th anniversary year, the Board, Staff, and pARTners offered an array of engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community.

For example, the 20th summer season of Alpenglow brought a variety of outstanding performers to the Center’s outdoor stage, including Salvador Santana of the Bay Area, LA piano man Bob Malone, as well as the memorable big band sound of the March Fourth Marching Band.

Additionally, the 11th year of Tour de Forks kicked off with a fascinating menu of extraordinary homes, fine wines, and incredible cuisine prepared

by some of Gunnison Valley’s most creative and talented chefs. These two long-standing signature events signify both the enduring nature of the Center’s mission and the sustaining care and stewardship of the mission by our loyal friends and donors.

Another important dimension of the Center’s 25th anniversary year occurred earlier this year with the inauguration of a dedicated visual arts space and expanded visual arts program. The Art Studio at the Center for the Arts (ASCA), located at 111 Elk Avenue, offers an enticing selection of instructional and experiential activities to attract both accomplished, as well as aspiring, artists.

At the same time, the Board and Staff continue to focus on longerterm critical improvements to the current facility and pursue thoughtful development of the two-facility plan intended to ensure this remarkable commitment to visual and performing arts in the Gunnison Valley for the next 25 years. Recognizing and appreciating that the arts are integral to the economic vitality of the region, we genuinely welcome your engagement, participation and active support of these crucial efforts.

AS REPORTED IN LOCAL MEDIA, as well as by national press, the Center for the Arts participated in the most recent Arts & Economic Prosperity IV Study conducted by Americans for the Arts. Findings from this national study provide compelling new evidence that nonprofit arts and culture represent a $7 million industry in Gunnison County — one that supports 171 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $463,000 in state and local

revenue. By demonstrating that investments in the arts and culture yields significant economic benefit, the study clearly puts to rest the faulty assumption that communities support the arts and culture at the expense of local economic development. To the contrary, communities that support the arts and culture invest in their economic well being while simultaneously enhancing a high quality of life for EVERYONE.

The Center for the Arts, a home for arts and culture, offers engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community.

Our Vision We envision The Center for the Arts as a captivating and welcoming place, truly unrivaled in Colorado. The Center brings people together to share, inspire, nurture, educate, and enjoy the arts and culture of our mountain community.

A Report on the Fiscal Year November 1, 2011 through October 31, 2012 In 2012, the Center welcomed over 31,000 people through its doors through 58 Center presentations, 56 rental events (21 of which were for non-profits), 73 rental rehearsals and five school events.

There were 20 Piper Gallery receptions. The Crested Butte Dance Collective held 23 classes on the Center Stage serving over 430 dancers. The Art Studio conducted over 90 days of instruction at our satellite campus at 111 Elk Avenue with over 800 visits to the studio. As each day passes, we are adding more classes, more workshops, more opportunities for the visual arts, more invigorating performances in the arts.

Through all of this it is our vision, our mission and our values that guide our every move.

TRUE PROSPERITY The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us — fostering creativity, goodness, and beauty.

They help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. When times are tough, the arts are salve for the ache.

IMPROVED ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores, lower drop-out rates, and even better attitudes about community service — benefits reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status. Students with four years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with one-half year or less.

ARTS ARE AN INDUSTRY Arts organizations are responsible businesses, employers, and consumers. Nonprofit arts organizations generate $166 billion in economic activity annually, supporting 5.7 million jobs and generating nearly $30 billion in government revenue. Investment in the arts supports jobs, generates tax revenues, and advances our creativitybased economy.

ARTS ARE GOOD FOR LOCAL MERCHANTS The typical arts attendee spends $27.79 per person, per event, not including the cost of admission on items such as meals, parking, and babysitters. Non-local arts audiences (who live outside the county) spend nearly twice as much as local arts attendees ($40.19 vs. $19.53) — valuable revenue for local businesses and the community.

ARTS ARE THE CORNERSTONE OF TOURISM Arts travelers are ideal tourists — they stay longer and spend more. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that the percentage of international travelers including museum visits on their trip has grown annually since 2003 (17 to 24 percent), while the share attending concerts and theater performances increased five of the past seven years (13 to 17 percent since 2003).

ARTS ARE AN EXPORT INDUSTRY U.S. exports of arts goods (e.g., movies, paintings, jewelry) grew to $64 billion in 2010. With U.S. imports at just $23 billion, the arts achieved a $41 billion trade surplus in 2010.

BUILDING THE 21ST CENTURY WORKFORCE Reports by the Conference Board show creativity is among the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders — with 72 percent saying creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree. Their Ready to Innovate report concludes, “…the arts — music, creative writing, drawing, dance — provide skills sought by employers of the 3rd millennium.”

HEALTHCARE Nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients, families, and even staff. 78 percent deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients — shorter hospital stays, better pain management, and less medication.

STRONGER COMMUNITIES University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher child welfare, and lower poverty rates. A vibrant arts community ensures that young people are not left to be raised solely in a pop culture and tabloid marketplace.

CREATIVE INDUSTRIES The Creative Industries are arts businesses that range from non-profit museums, symphonies, and theaters to for-profit film, architecture, and advertising companies. An analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 904,581 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts that employ 3.3 million people — representing 4.25 percent of all businesses and 2.15 percent of all employees, respectively.

10 LESSONS THE ARTS TEACH THE ARTS TEACH CHILDREN TO MAKE GOOD JUDGMENTS about qualitative relationships. Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail.

THE ARTS HELP CHILDREN LEARN TO SAY what cannot be said.

When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them feel, they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.

THE ARTS TEACH CHILDREN THAT PROBLEMS can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.

THE ARTS ENABLE US TO HAVE EXPERIENCE we can have from no other source and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling. The arts’ position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

THE ARTS CELEBRATE MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.

THE ARTS MAKE VIVID THE FACT THAT NEITHER WORDS in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know. The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.

THE ARTS TEACH STUDENTS THAT SMALL DIFFERENCES can have large effects. The arts traffic in subtleties.
