PROFESSOR JUDITH SQUIRES, DEPUTY VICECHANCELLOR AND PROVOST, UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL

How can we reimagine society in an era of climate change, pandemic, hunger, poverty, questions of racial, ethnic and gender justice and other pressing global societal challenges? Significant threats and dangers lie ahead of us, but so do opportunities, as new ways of being, thinking and doing emerge. This new, fully Open Access journal aims to facilitate thinking about these positive new trajectories and to become the journal of choice to address the complexities of global social challenges across disciplines and fields.

It is the first such journal to be based in the social sciences while also engaging with research from humanities, arts and STEM. Including marginalised, minority and indigenous world views, the journal will be an important home for research that contributes to the creation of alternative futures that acknowledge past injustices and are socially and environmentally just and sustaining.

Raising the Nation

How To Build A Better Future For Our Children (And Everyone Else)

Children today grow up in an increasingly volatile, complex and uncertain world. Theirs is a generation disempowered from steering their lives while society’s systems are failing to provide the support they need. Yet, a country only prospers when its children - from all walks of life – thrive, meaning that the United Kingdom now faces some consequential choices.

Raising the Nation builds a compelling case showing why we must nurture smart, strong and kind children to one day inherit the stewardship of society. Setting out big public policy ideas, enhanced by contributions from academic and campaigning experts, as well as those with lived experience, this book is a manifesto to deliver our brightest possible future. Reframing political success, it shows why we must prioritise child-centred policies to ensure the future strength of our communities, environment and economy.

What Are Animal Rights For?

Steve Cooke, University of Leicester

How should we treat animals? The long-held belief that other animals exist solely for human use has undergone radical challenge in the past half century. How much further do we need to go to minimize, and even eliminate, animal suffering?

The field of animal rights raises big questions about how humans treat the other animals with which we share the planet. These questions are becoming more pressing as livestock farming exerts an ever-greater toll on the planet and the animals themselves, and we learn more about their capacity to think and experience pain. This book shows why animals ought to have greater rights and what the world might look like if they did.

What Are Prisons For?

Hindpal Singh Bhui, University of Oxford

What does a good prison look like? Over 11 million people are currently locked up in prisons across the world, but does that mean that prison actually works? The answer usually depends on what people believe and feel about crime, punishment and what happens inside prisons.

The deep social and personal impact of prisons demands that we try to search for a better understanding of the evidence and ideas that have made prisons so ubiquitous. Hindpal Singh Bhui, with 20 years’ experience of visiting and working in prisons worldwide, argues that we need to look at who is sent there and why, to disentangle reality from ideology and myth. Introducing the competing histories of prisons and allowing the voices of prisoners, prison staff and victims to be heard, he asks whether there is a better way to achieve what society wants from its prisons.

Unchecked Power?

How Recent Constitutional Reforms are Threatening UK Democracy

Is the government really acting for the people? Or does this rhetoric simply justify an executive power-grab? For some, Boris Johnson’s premiership epitomised how far the UK’s democracy has been captured by populism and the Prime Minister seemed more concerned about fulfilling the wishes of the British people than with following the rules or listening to Parliament.

Events like ‘Partygate’ grabbed the headlines. Criticisms of Boris Johnson’s actions eventually led to his resignation and replacement as leader of his party and Prime Minister. Some feel that this shows that the UK’s constitution is healthy, with checks and balances in place to prevent any possible abuse of power.

While these events attracted much media attention, other constitutional changes have been taking place with little public awareness. These have strengthened the government’s powers and weakened political and legal checks over its actions. Deliberation is being replaced by rhetoric and principles of good government no longer seem to restrain the actions of those in power.

Alison Young provides the first consolidated account of these changes, arguing that the UK is currently on a constitutional cliff edge, which endangers democracy and good constitutional government. She argues that more is needed to shore up the UK’s post-Brexit constitution to prevent it collapsing into a system of unchecked power.

Secrets and Silence

Uncovering the Legacy of the Cleveland Child Sexual Abuse Case

“A searing indictment of the way public policy was pursued, and the cost to children’s lives and professionals’ futures, that shows us how to change child protection for the future.”

“With forensic clarity, Beatrix Campbell reveals the staggering extent of failures to protect children from sexual abuse. This book marks a turning point in child protection history.”

“A shocking indictment of state neglect and complicity in child sexual abuse. Essential reading for anyone who cares about truth, accountability and justice.”

The child sexual abuse scandal in the English county of Cleveland in the 1980s was a defining moment, but not the scandal we were led to believe it was.

Acclaimed journalist Beatrix Campbell has uncovered government documents that show how medical evidence of childhood rape identified by pioneering paediatricians was deemed credible but ‘dangerous’ - it was more important to save money than save children.

This book reveals how this secret has framed policy-making and public opinion and the consequences for children, professionals, justice and the state.

A torrent of evidence of childhood suffering followed the deaths of ‘national treasures’ Sir Jimmy Savile and Sir Cyril Smith, the discovery of widespread sexual exploitation and institutional abuse across the world - all in plain sight.

The Cleveland children have remained in the shadows. Now, for the first time, a Cleveland child delves into her records and shares her story.

Tackling Torture Prevention in Practice

How big a problem is torture? Are the right things being done to prevent it?

What does the UN do, and why does it appear at times to be so impotent in the face of torture?

In this vitally important work, Malcolm Evans tells the story of torture prevention under international law, setting out what is really taking place in places of detention around the world. Challenging assumptions about torture’s root causes, he calls for what is needed to enable us to be in a better position to bring about change.

The author draws on over ten years’ experience as the Chair of the United Nations Sub-Committee for Prevention of Torture to give a frank account of the remarkable capacities of this system, what it has achieved in practice, what it has not been able to achieve – and most importantly, why.

Luxury and Corruption Challenging the Anti-Corruption Consensus

Tereza Østbø Kuldova, Oslo Metropolitan University, Jardar Østbø, Institute for Defence Studies, Norwegian Defence University College, Thomas Raymen, Northumbria University

The world has been bombarded in recent years with images of the luxurious lives and wealth of corrupt oligarchs and kleptocrats, amassed at the expense of ordinary people. Such images exploit our feelings of injustice, are taken as indicative of moral decay and inspire a desire to purge our economies of dirty money, objects and people.

But why do anti-corruption efforts routinely fail? What kind of world are they creating? Looking at luxury art, antiquities, superyachts and populist politics, this book explores the connection between luxury and corruption, and offers an alternative to the received wisdom of how we tackle corruption.

White Minds Everyday Performance, Violence and Resistance

Guilaine Kinouani, Race Relations

It is widely understood that race is a social fact with profound implications for life chances, group identity, collective representation and for the social order. ‘Whiteness’, the source of race-based inequality and injustice is perpetuated through power, violence and an array of complex processes which help protect the status quo.

Guilaine Kinouani argues that whiteness is a historically and socially located psychological phenomenon. She examines how the psychological and psychic factors involved in the reproduction of whiteness intersect with macro structures, shedding light on everyday race dynamics, race inequality and racial violence of interest to all who seek to understand the impact of ‘whiteness’ so they can be more effective anti-racists.

Reluctance in World Politics

Why States Fail to Act Decisively

“This timely, original and nuanced book addresses a major paradox in international relations: why do states with the power to act so often fail to do so?”

“A conceptually and theoretically solid book on the much-understudied subject of reluctance in international politics. A must-read for scholars and practitioners alike.”

Why do international actors, including powerful states, often fail to develop clear foreign policies and instead adopt indecisive, ‘muddlingthrough’ approaches?

This book develops a concept and a theory of reluctance in world politics. Applying it to the study of regional crisis management by India, Germany and Brazil, it finds that reluctance emerges when governments fail to devise clear foreign policy preferences and face competing international pressures.

The study of reluctance in world politics sheds new light on some of the most pressing problems of our time, from weak crisis management to cooperation deficits in global governance.

The Human Costs of Europe’s Common Labour Market

“Strikingly original and compelling – it is a gift EU studies cannot afford to refuse.”

PEO HANSEN, AUTHOR OF A MODERN MIGRATION THEORY

“A must-read.”

IBRAHIMA AMADOU DIA, NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (NTNU)

This agenda-setting book shows how freedom of movement has made the integration of Europe’s labour markets a contentious issue, for example in the aftermath of the eurocrisis, where workers had to make great sacrifices to enable the currency area to function.

It argues that the process of market integration in Europe has undermined the power and influence of European workers and generated significant human costs. Starting from the position of labour, this book offers an alternative approach which balances the needs of justice and efficiency.

With appeal across a wide range of readers interested in economic integration, it provides lessons for policy makers in how to integrate Europe’s member states to better protect workers and citizens.

British Comedy and the Everyday Politics of Globalization

“A

What can comedy tell us about the politics of a nation?

In this book, James Brassett builds on his prize-winning research to demonstrate how British comedy can provide intimate and vital understandings of the everyday politics of globalization in Britain.

The book explores British comedy and Britain’s global politics from post-war imperial decline through to its awkward embrace of globalisation, examining a wide variety of comedic mediums, such as the popular television show The Office and the online satire The Daily Mash. Touching on issues such as empire, the class system and capitalism, the author demonstrates how comedy offers valuable insights on how global market life is experienced, mediated, contested and accommodated.

Welfare Conditionality

Women and Welfare Conditionality

Lived Experiences of Benefit Sanctions, Work and Welfare

Sharon Wright, University of Glasgow

Recent welfare reforms, based on austerity narratives and a gender-neutral rationale, have failed to recognise the ways in which women and men experience the different demands and rewards of paid employment and unpaid care.

This book draws on a wealth of qualitative longitudinal evidence to cast light on women’s lived experiences of welfare and work. Giving voice to social security recipients, this book uncovers the hidden gendered bias of conditional welfare reforms to challenge dominant political discourses, policy design and practice norms.

It combines and develops three interdisciplinary perspectives - feminist analysis, lived experience and street-level bureaucracy – to offer a new understanding of British welfare reform policies and practice.

Beyond Nudge

Advancing the State-of-the-Art of Behavioural Public Policy and Administration

In recent years, a wave of reforms known as ‘nudges’, or ‘behavioural public policy agenda’, have emerged. ‘Nudge’ policies are created to lightly influence groups in society to change their behaviour, using behavioural insights to solve complex policy problems.

First published as a special issue of Policy & Politics journal, this book situates these reforms within a broader tradition of methodological individualism.

With contributions from a range of international scholars, it demonstrates that when behavioural policies expand their focus beyond the individual, they have the potential to better understand, investigate and shape social outcomes.

Analysing the TrustTransparency Nexus

Multi-Level Governance in the UK, France and Germany

Ian Stafford, Cardiff University, Alistair Cole, Hong Kong Baptist University and Dominic Heinz, Turkish-German University

“Very topical in its nature, the book fills in the existing void in understanding the concepts of trust and transparency within a multilevel context – very much needed in the era of mistrust.”

ANIA ANKOWSKA, LEEDS BECKETT UNIVERSITY

Is transparency a necessary condition to build and restore citizen and civil society trust in governance and democracy?

This volume addresses the relationship between trust and transparency in the context of multilevel governance. Drawing on fieldwork from the UK, France and Germany, this comparative analysis examines different efforts to build trust between key actors involved in decision making at the sub-national level. It outlines the challenges of delivering this agenda and explores the paradox that trust might require transparency, yet in some instances transparency may undermine trust.

Hidden Voices

Lived Experiences in the Irish Welfare Space

“What is life at the economic margins of the Irish state? Whelan offers important insights into this experience based on interviews with individuals navigating the complex worlds of work and welfare in Ireland.”

Underpinned by the idea of the right to a ‘basic minimum’, welfare states are a major feature of many societies. However, the lived experiences of persons seeking and receiving welfare payments can often be overlooked.

This book seeks to remedy this omission by honouring lived experience as valuable, insightful and necessary. It draws on qualitative interviews with 19 people receiving various working-age welfare payments in Ireland to explore stigma, social reciprocity and the notions of the deserving and undeserving poor, and to analyse welfare conditionality in the Irish context.

Breaking new ground, this book offers original research findings which contest and inform policy both within Ireland and beyond.

Living on the Edge

Innovative Research on Leaving Care and Transitions to Adulthood

“This book is a must for anyone interested in youth transitions from out of home care wanting to know what’s emerging in research as the new, the challenging, the ‘edgy’.”

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY licence. Young people transitioning out of care towards independence, work and adulthood are on the edge of these phases of life. Considering previously neglected groups of care leavers such as unaccompanied migrants, street youth, those leaving residential care, young parents and those with a disability, this book presents cutting-edge research from emerging global scholars.

The collection addresses the precarity experienced by many care leavers, who often lack the social capital and resources to transition into stable education, employment and family life. Including the voices of care leavers throughout, it makes research relevant to practitioners and policy makers aiming to enable, rather than label, vulnerable groups.

Low-Income Female Teacher Values and Agency in India

Implications for Reflective Practice

Ruth Samuel, SOAS and Oxford Centre for Religion and Public Life

Education in India concentrates on exam performance and consequently, the teacher in India often acts as disseminator of textbook material, as well as maintaining class discipline and respect. This book explores low-income female teacher’s speech and syntax as a crucial resource in which agency, freedom and empowerment is enacted within a strong oral tradition in India.

It demonstrates how this socially and economically marginalised group overcome prejudices to develop relational agency and embed their authority. It shows how they establish their values and why their beliefs shape attitudes to aspiration, achievement and freedom of choice. It concludes with recommendations for policy and improvements to reflective practice in teaching.

The New Political Economy of Teacher Education

The Enterprise Narrative and the Shadow State

With a unique and international analysis of teacher education policy, this book adopts a political economy perspective to provide a comparative analysis of three contrasting welfare state models – the US, England and Norway – following the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Arguing that a new political economy of teacher education began to emerge in the decade following the GFC, these worldrenowned authors explore key concepts in education privatisation and examine the increasingly important role of shadow state enterprises in some jurisdictions.

This topical text demonstrates the potential of a political economy approach when analysing education policies regarding pre-service teacher education and continuing professional development.

Detroit after Bankruptcy

Are There Trends Towards an Inclusive City?

“In this masterfully researched volume, Joe T. Darden employs a wide range of data and decades of scholarly knowledge to determine the impact of Detroit’s bankruptcy on the quality of life of its citizens.”

Detroit is the first city of its size to become bankrupt and some policy makers have argued that, since then, it has entered a ‘new beginning’. This book critically examines the evidence for and against this claim.

Joe Darden analyses whether Detroit’s patterns of race and class neighbourhood inequality have persisted or whether investments have led to improvements in academic achievement, homeownership, employment and reductions in poverty and violent crime.

He measures, quantitatively, the benefits and disadvantages of staying in urban Detroit or moving to the suburbs, and provides evidence to answer whether Detroit, after bankruptcy, is becoming an inclusive city.

Disciplining Democracies

Human Insecurity in Japan–Myanmar Relations

Lindsay Black, Leiden University

This book examines Japan’s relationship with Myanmar from the passage of its constitution in May 2008 to the February 2021 coup d’état that finished its transition to a ‘disciplined democracy’.

It explores the nexus between security and political economy in the context of changing regional dynamics characterized by ‘Great Power’ competition and cooperation. Focusing on the impact of Japan’s relations with Myanmar on people in Myanmar and beyond, the author argues that the Japanese government and businesses sidelined ‘universal values’ for profit at the expense of human security.

This text develops a unique Area Studies approach that critiques how Japan’s foreign policy elites perceive Japan’s role in the liberal international order.

Gender and Citizenship in Transitional Justice

Everyday Experiences of Reparation and Reintegration in Colombia

Sanne Weber, University of Birmingham

Through two Colombian case studies, Sanne Weber identifies the ways in which conflict experiences are defined by structures of gender inequality, and how these could be transformed in the post-conflict context.

The author reveals that current, apparently gender-sensitive, transitional justice (TJ) and disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) laws and policies ultimately undermine rather than transform gender equality and, consequently, weaken the chances of achieving holistic and durable peace. To overcome this, Weber offers an innovative approach to TJ and DDR that places gendered citizenship as both the starting point and the continued driving force of post-conflict reconstruction.

New Approaches to the Study of Political Violence

Bringing together a team of international scholars, this volume provides a foundational guide to queer methodologies in the study of political violence and conflict.

Contributors provide illuminating discussions on why queer approaches are important, what they entail and how to adopt a queer approach to political violence and conflict. The chapters explore a variety of methodological approaches, including fieldwork, interviews, cultural analysis and archival research. They also engage with broader academic debates, such as how to work with research partners in an ethical manner.

Including valuable case studies from around the world, the book demonstrates how these methods can be used in practice. It is the first critical, in-depth discussion on queer methods and methodologies for research on political violence and conflict.

Education and Development in Central America and the Latin Caribbean Global Forces and Local Responses

Rooted in an international political economy theoretical framework, this book provides unique insights into the global forces and local responses that are shaping education systems in Central America and the Latin Caribbean (CALC).

The book covers all Spanish-speaking countries of CALC and examines the effects of macroeconomic pressures, geopolitical intervention, neocolonial relationships, global pandemics, the influence of international organizations and transnational gang networks. Chapters analyse the challenges these global forces present to education systems in the region as well as highlighting the local efforts to address, mitigate and even counteract them. In doing so, the book illuminates how education can contribute to either maintaining or challenging inequalities and exclusion in the face of global and national pressures.

Death’s Social and Material Meaning Beyond the Human

Death studies typically focus on the death of humans, overlooking the wider factors involved in social and natural processes around death. This book provides an alternative focus by looking beyond human death to reveal the complex interconnections among human and more than human creatures, entities and environments.

Bringing together a range of international scholars, it sheds light on topics which have previously remained at the margins of contemporary death studies and death care cultures.

Permanent Racism

Race, Class and the Myth of PostRacial Britain

Racism has no place in our society, we are told. In fact, its role is crucial but today public debate on race in Britain is constrained by a facile post-racialism. Its features are colour-blind narratives, an ‘anti-antiracist’ discourse and erasure of Black working class identities.

This book examines and challenges the marginalisation of critical race analysis in debates on social justice. It reconceptualises Critical Race Theory from a British standpoint, foregrounding the concept of ‘permanent racism’ and its importance in understanding race as a fully social relationship.

Disrupting the Academy with Lived Experience-Led Knowledge

This book firmly positions lived experienceled expertise as a unique and compelling form of knowledge in decolonising and disrupting research, teaching and advocacy.

Together, the authors’ perspectives centre lived experiences in the production of knowledge, challenge outsider-imposed views and create new research and writing norms. They demonstrate that when lived experience experts lead the way, their knowledge of how to address social injustices can enrich, transform and decolonise research, teaching and advocacy.

The Gentrification of Queer Activism

Diversity Politics and the Promise of Inclusion in London

Olimpia Burchiellaro, University of Westminster

“Burchiellaro makes a sobering and thorough argument that oppressed people’s hopeful visions must surpass their own immediate experiences and conditions, no matter how dire.”

Tracing the extensive LGBTQ+ venue closures in the 2010s, this book explores the queer politics of LGBTQ+ inclusion in London.

Drawing on ethnographic research conducted with activists, professionals and LGBTQ+ friendly businesses, the author reveals how gender and sexuality come to be reconfigured in the production and consumption of LGBTQ+ inclusion and its promises.

Giving voice to queer perspectives on inclusion, this is an important contribution to our understanding of urban policy, nightlife, neoliberalism and LGBTQ+ politics.

Understanding Work and Employment Relations

The Politics of Migrant Labour

Organising Everyday Work and Social Reproduction

Gabriella Alberti, University of Leeds and Devi Sacchetto, University of Padova

The turnover of labour and its significance for workers and employers has usually been considered at the organisational level as individual exit behaviour, and seldom in relation to the cross-border mobility practices of migrant workers within and without the workplace.

Drawing from labour process theory, the autonomy of migration, social reproduction and industrial relations, this book explores the relationship between labour mobility and international migration under a global and historical perspective.

Uncovering both the individual and collective actions by migrants inside and outside worker organizations, the authors develop a new understanding of migrants’ everyday mobilities as creative and life-sustaining strategies of social reproduction and labour conflict.

Menopause Transitions and the Workplace

Theorising Transitions, Responsibilities and Interventions

Vanessa Beck, University of Bristol and Jo Brewis, The Open University Business School

The symptoms of menopause transitions have profound implications for work and are, in turn, affected by work. Despite this, the topic is rarely discussed in management and organisation studies.

Providing an overview of existing knowledge in the field of menopause in the workplace, this collection re-theorises the management of human resources as it relates to the connections between gender, age and the body in the workplace environment with an intersectional analysis.

Offering theoretical frameworks from experts as well as possible practical approaches that can be implemented in workplaces to support women transitioning through menopause, this is a goto reference for academics and policy makers working in the field.

Observing Dark Innovation After Neoliberal Tools and Techniques

Why does scholarship on innovation tend to fixate on particular classes of technology while neglecting others? Climate Litigation and Justice in Africa

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence.

In recent years, climate litigation has become an important subject of global scholarly and policy interest. However, developments within the Global South, particularly in Africa, have been largely neglected.

This volume brings together an international team of contributors to provide a much-needed examination of climate litigation in Africa. The book outlines how climate litigation in Africa is distinct as well as pinpointing where it connects with the global conversation. Chapters engage with crucial themes such as human rights approaches to climate governance, postcolonial theory and the role of gender in climate litigation.

Spanning a range of approaches and jurisdictions, the book challenges universal concepts around climate and the role of activism (including litigation) in seeking to advance climate governance.

Digital Transparency, Openness and Accountability in Criminal Courts

Setting out recent, major developments in the use of digital technology in court processes, this book investigates the impact of such developments on public accountability and transparency in the criminal justice process. Drawing on empirical studies conducted in courtrooms and a review of media court reporting and social media alongside their own experiences, the authors explore key issues such as equality of access, remote and virtual courts, justice system data management, the role of the public and the role of the media.

Through its analysis, the book considers way in which access to justice, rehabilitation of offenders and public accountability could all be enhanced and proposes a new, evolving model of accountability and open justice.

Sexual History Evidence and the Rape Trial

A Multidisciplinary Critique

Despite reforms to the criminal justice system’s investigations into crimes of sexual violence, there has been little discernible impact for rape victims.

This accessible book interrogates the use of a victim’s sexual history as evidence in rape trials. Adopting a critical multidisciplinary perspective underpinned by feminist theory, the authors show how this issue is symptomatic of the wider problem of securing justice for victims of sexual violence.

Politics and Administrative Justice

Postliberalism, Street-Level Bureaucracy and the Reawakening of Democratic Citizenship

This book argues there is urgent need for a radical reassessment of the way the law mediates between citizens and the state.

Drawing on public inquiries into high-profile cases, such as Hillsborough and Grenfell, fictional/cinematic treatments such as I Daniel Blake, and the disability rights movement, this book examines how the regulation of streetlevel bureaucracy can play an integral part in reimagining postliberal politics and the role of the law.

Creative Research Methods in Practice

Photovoice, Reimagined

Over the past decades, ‘photovoice’ has emerged as a participatory and creative research method in which participants capture and discuss their reality through photographs. This indispensable ‘how-to’ book with exercises and visual aids takes novice and veteran researchers through the practicalities and ethics of applying this approach. Written by experienced teacher Nicole Brown, the book:

• outlines the conceptual foundations and historical development of the approach;

• redefines photovoice as a research method and as a framework;

• explores how photovoice can be used in all stages of research from data collection to dissemination;

• provides guidance and food for thought to get researchers started on their project.

Each chapter ends with exercises that focus readers’ learning and understanding by practically engaging them in the work presented throughout. The examples and visual aids will help them recognise all the details presented and represented in a photograph. For researchers who would like to try their hand at photovoice as a method or as a framework to foster a more participatory approach, this is the ultimate guide to kickstart their project.

The collection provides an introduction to interlinkages, synergies and trade-offs between the ‘green’ and other goals, such as gender equality and economic growth.
